Been thinking about Spandam again a lot lately for some reason. I was majorly into him back when the Enies Lobby arc was coming out a looooong time ago (please understand this makes me feel very old!) like I printed off pics to keep in my school folders, had a very elaborate selfship (well over a decade before I even heard that term) and all that jazz. Held off on posting this for over a week because it feels a little weird sharing this since they're super old concepts.

Anyways! All that to preface that these headcanons are a tiny bit new, but most are very old concepts from my selfship getting dusted off. Some are a bit toxic, but I mean, it's Spandam, of course they are.

Spandam Headcanons

-General Relationship/History-

He met you through his father’s connections when the two of you were children. Your parents and his arranged a marriage and you and Spandam are expected to accept it.

You spend a month with him every year while your respective parents have a vacation together at a resort.

Spandam whines and bosses you around and you’re expected to put up with it because he’s a year older and his father is a higher rank than yours and this trend continues through the rest of your relationship.

Despite this, you do somewhat enjoy his company, as his weaknesses mean you get to step up and play hero to him often, even if he isn’t the most grateful. And around your teens you realize you do find him cute, even if you would never admit it.

The yearly meetings end when you’re in your late teens and instead you’re stuck having to help plan a reluctant wedding that neither of you are sure you want.

The wedding is long and boring, but you and Spandam surprise each other by having a good time complaining about everything together.

As the years go by and he rises in rank (cough nepobaby cough) you’re by his side, and you get to see a side of him others rarely see. After about a year together, he’d shocked to realize he actually DOES love you, in his own way.

He can be sweet! He likes to spoil you by buying you gifts, and he makes sure you know how expensive/rare they are.

Please join him in being a smug asshole to others and he will be over the moon. Assert your authority belittle, demean, he likes having someone to back him up when he's talking shit.

Honestly can be a pretty shit husband, not gonna lie. You’d need to learn basic combat skills (ideally you’d be trained to an almost Cipher Pol 9 level but he can’t always get what he wants) because in addition to being married to him he’d be expecting you to defend him sometimes.

Do not expect him to put himself in harms way for you though, and he would push you to the ground if it would buy him more time to save himself in a crisis.

No matter how many “spill proof” cups you buy him, he constantly proves them wrong. At least he’s easy to buy gifts for.

It bugs him IMMENSELY that CP9 vastly prefers interacting with you and they actually have a little respect for you.

He does brag about you a lot to his underlings, but its usually in a "my wife is better than you" way, putting others down.

You get to see him without his mask more than anyone else, and he often uses it to elicit sympathy and praise from you. When he’s in a bad mood he’ll sometimes say his face is your fault for not protecting him.

Spandam goes between phases of “no PDA in front of anyone” and “clingy and handsy”, depending on his mood.

The relationship can be rather ‘slap, slap, kiss’ at times, but he doesn’t really hold it against you if you give as good as you get. Sure, he’ll whine and complain that you’re unreasonable, but he’s known you long enough to not take it personally.

So basically: he won’t hesitate to slap you if he’s in a bad mood, so slap him the fuck back! Just be careful, he’s a lot weaker than you. But he’s pretty durable.

Regardless of any fights, he has trouble sleeping at night if he’s not curled up with you so any issues are cleared up before bedtime. He’s much more manageable when it’s just the two of you.

-Family Relationship-

He'd be perfectly happy and fine with never having to see your family again if you don't.

His family though? You’re stuck visiting Spandine any time Spandam wants to.

You’re both expected to continue the family line asap.

Spandam wouldn’t be any extra help during pregnancy, the most he’d do is hire you some assistants or have Funkfreed out more often for you to lean on or to bring you things.

50/50 on if he would miss the birth. It depends on if there’s a work opportunity or not. If he has a chance to rise in rank, he’ll take it.

Same goes for birthdays, anniversaries, and any other holidays. Anything to boost his own standing always comes first.

I’m sorry but there’s a good chance the child would inherit the darker face markings too, or at least the eye ones.

An even worse father than he is a husband, leaves the childcare to you or a nanny. Will not change diapers, clean up throw up, etc.

Still has a fondness for his kid because it’s his, especially if the kid reminds him of himself.

The type to try and buy his kids love and respect.

Unless you took massive steps to curb it, the kid would likely grow up to be a spoiled brat who looks up to Spandam and never realizes how lonely they really feel in his company.

-Misc-

The type to toss and turn in his sleep. Not because he’s tormented or anything but because he can never find the perfect angle to sleep in.

Spandam would only admit it when you’re alone with him, but he likes to lay his head in your lap and have his hair stroked, very calming for such a stressed out guy.

Goes between extremely secure in the relationship to worrying he might lose you to one of his subordinates if you talk to them too long. Then he’s clingy for the rest of the day.

His favorite date spot is anywhere that has a good and highly expensive steak. The price is important because he likes reiterating to you that he can afford very nice things/bragging.

Even if you’re taller, he’d likely call you things like “my little Y/N”, because it makes him feel big and powerful.

During anniversaries when he IS there, he breaks out the good whiskey and likes to has a drink with you.

He acts like he likes black coffee but when he can, he has a SUPER complicated drink order at coffee shops and gets very annoyed when it’s wrong.

You have to put up with him going “don’t you know who I am?!” in public with the dignity and grace that he severely lacks.

If push comes to shove, he wouldn’t hesitate to put your life at risk for his own but he would be very moody and shockingly (to himself) upset with himself for a long time, feeling guilty is something he’s not used to at all.

That being said, it would almost certainly not come to that and you still rank higher in his heart than anyone else.

He’s at your mercy when healing from the Enies Lobby incident and badly injured, but he deserves to be smacked hard for almost leaving you behind during the Buster Call.

Is a lot less smug and a lot more humble towards you after his extensive recovery and being moved to an underling position in CP0.

He becomes a LOT more clingy too, and would prefer you be at his side at all times.

Hello all! I've consolidated the responses so far to my call for 'core selfship / ficto experiences' in relation to my 'having a f/o' solo journaling ttrpg project-- I want to let you all see what's been offered so far and also explain a bit more about what a solo journaling ttrpg is! (:

That explanation and the ideas offered below the cut, because otherwise this is a long post. For anyone this post breaks on, please forgive me.

To start, what's a ttrpg? It's short of table top role-playing game, sometimes called a physical game. If you've ever heard of Dungeons and Dragons (D&D), you know what a table top game is!

For those who haven't, table top games are basically like if you took playing pretend and gave it some rules-- or didn't. The world of TTRPG games is vast and encompasses a wide range of games from super crunchy structured rules with Lots of dice and math to games that are less than one page and super loose and free-form-- some don't even use dice!

The difference here is that most people think you need a group to play tabletop games. And if that's the experience you want, that's true. However, clever gamers have made rules and ways to play games by themselves! Some people emulate the person who runs the game using a generator, while others do games more guided by prompts. This latter one is what I'm doing-- it's called a journaling game.

Journaling games have a basic core of the idea that you / your character journals their experiences as they play (or after, if you don't want to interrupt your flow). Usually the main mechanic is generating prompts off a list using dice or card pulls, but some of these games also include mechanics like ticking boxes off, gathering resources, and making choices.

I'm still trying to figure out what mechanics I want in my game. Obviously there will prompts, but everything else I'm workshopping-- right now I've been gathering data, in the form of looking at other solo games for how they handle their gameplay. Sadly none of the things I've looked at quite fit what I want, but they're useful enough that I've began a design document.

In terms of themes - I want to touch on longing, distance, intimacy (not essentially romantic), and self love/etc. I'm also toying with the concept of a eventual expansion that allows you to play as your F/O, but I need a base game first, so that's just an idea right now.

Anyway, here's what folks have suggested as ideas so far --

- longing yearning etc

- knowing there will never be physicality / hearing their voice / etc

- loving someone you cannot touch/etc

- the self love aspect

- imagines, headcanons, etc

- interacting with f/os source

- community or lack of

- dealing with feeling shame/etc or being picked on/etc for selfshipping

- dealing with jealously/difficulty 'sharing'

- aking things related to your f/o (example: wedding albums)

- easy source eod joy and comfort

- knowing songs and art f/o would like

- finding things that are stressful LESS so because talking about it with f/o would help

- the cute guilty pride of 'I like this character' 'me too I actually self ship with them'

- having a friend who understands when no one else is around (even if they are from media)

- daydreaming

- trying to get yourself to dream about them

- always knowing exactly what to commission someone for

- spending money on f/o related things (merch, other items that remind you of them, comms)

- selfship when the relationship is something you'd never want irl

- using selfship to figure out what you want (in a relationship for example)

- social aspect (assumptions people make, the selfship community)

- dreams about your f/o

- f/os helping against self negativity

- feeling like they're present in your life (and or imagning them with you)

- feeling insecure (bc you can't get confirmation f/o returns/would return feelings)

- freedom of headcanon and making S/Is

Apologies to all the cute little selfshippers who followed me on twitter because they saw the selfship bio thing I made for my Pokemon fanfic where I'm married to Looker, because sometimes at 1am I go on tangents about how I just spent an hour reading about horrific war crimes and I'm fascinated by horrible natural disasters and things and my love of macabre weird shit like animal skulls because it seems so out of character for me, the person who is still too afraid of Big Boo's Haunt to even listen to the music.

I really surprise people when I tell them I love Silent Hill and shit even tho I'm too afraid to play the games myself, I watched my sister play the first 4. I don't like horror MOVIES because I'm generally turned off by live action anything as a whole (I literally didn't watch a single live action TV show until they started making Star Wars ones).

I actually grew up with a pretty healthy relationship with death because I had pets my whole life and my mom explained the concept of lifespans and death to me at age like, 4. It's obviously still a fucking bummer and often traumatic but. You know. I don't even have a ton of trouble talking about Zero now, and it's only been 8 months and it was the worst thing to ever happen to me. Life persists! The time will pass regardless! Those who have left us remain with us always in different ways!

And trust me I will provide on Ashuta lore >:3 Here is The Food For Today. I didn't include art this time bc I have been eepy. I have ideas for long after this, but this is the general gist. I plan to eventually draw a lot (if not all) of this out. Here's her concept for her first appearance and mission (Chapters 14 to 20, or up to episode 7 in the anime):

So, after being found by Makima:

She is added to the team briefly after Denji and Power. I'm currently undecided at which point she should enter the story; I'm thinking about prior to Chapter 14.

Makima helps her find a place (up until this point, she's been homeless since becoming a vampire) near Aki's apartment, encouraging her to make friends. She suggests Denji could use a friend since he's similar to her (not fully human, rough background).

Ashuta believes that since she'll be on a team of devils and humans, she would be more likely to make friends since they should be more accepting, right? She shows up to the Hayakawa apartment with some food, trying to introduce herself as a new member of the team (and not disclosing herself as a vampire yet- Power can tell, but doesn't care enough to point it out).

Denji thinks at first she's friendly, but a bit too polite and wonders how someone like her got chosen by Makima. Power doesn't initially feel strongly about her either way, though she's delighted to meet Meowy.

Aki thinks she's polite (and finally someone easy for him to get along with on his squad), but questions why she became a devil hunter after a couple hours of them hanging out. She briefly explains that she's a vampire, and that her life was ruined by the Vampire Devil. Aki's tone quickly changes knowing she's not human, and the night is sort of abruptly ended.

CHAPTER 14:

She's integrated into the group with Chapter 14's mission in the hotel being her first (could be retconned later.)

She's a bit hurt with the talk of Aki and Arai not trusting "non-humans" and saying they don't have human rights, so she's quick to become very quiet since she assumed Makima's team of devils and humans meant she was more likely to be accepted.

Himeno can quickly tell that she looks upset and comes over to strike up a conversation, and the two make small talk throughout the mission. She tells her to not mind Aki, that he's just had bad experiences with devils. Ashuta protests that she's not a devil, but a devil makes an appearance before Himeno can respond.

Himeno discusses with Aki later in the mission that she's surprised Ashuta is so conscientious for a vampire- Aki shrugs and believes it's her being deceptive. Himeno goes to suggest he give Ashuta a chance.

CHAPTER 15:

Ashuta does bond a bit with Denji over the mission, both of them asking each other questions about their respective species ("So are you allergic to garlic?" and "Does it hurt when your chainsaws come out?")

CHAPTER 16:

In hopes of winning Aki's approval, Ashuta offers to help Aki hunt for the devil. She explains that since vampires don't really need to sleep much, she could help him all he wants.

Aki, unimpressed, asks why she's so hellbent on trying to please him when he doesn't care about wether she lives or dies as a non-human.

CHAPTER 18:

In the hysteria of facing the eternity devil, Ashuta finally snaps at Kobeni after trying to keep everyone calm the entire mission, telling her she's going to be a shit devil hunter if she freaks out at the slightest inconvenience. Kobeni yells back that it was easy for her to say, that she'd been calm and collected the entire mission because she can't die. Ashuta yells at her that pussying out and turning on her teammates made it more likely for all of them to die, and to shut the fuck up and help if she was going to stay a devil hunter. It certainly doesn't make Kobeni like her, but it shuts her up.

CHAPTER 20:

Ashuta joins the newbie welcome party. Denji questions how she can eat if she's a vampire, and she shrugs and explains that it's the same way devils eat- the only difference is human food isn't of nutritional substance to her and she doesn't retain any energy from it, she eats it for nostalgia purposes and the taste.

Ashuta lightens up when Makima joins the party, glad to see someone familiar- she considers Makima a friend, being the first person who was nice to her.

During the party, Makima asks Aki how Ashuta's first mission was, and wether she had done satisfactory. Aki admits that she did well, and Ashuta can't help but be a little happy at his approval.

As the night progresses, she gets drunk enough where she feels less afraid to approach Aki again. The two actually end up talking some. While drunk, Aki apologizes for the way that he had regarded her earlier in the night, and that she handled her first mission well, remaining composed in such a stressful situation .

Ashuta shrugs, and says it's fine- when she was turned into a vampire, she'd been shunned by everyone she once knew. She explains she still considers herself the same person she was before, but she fears rejection from humans more than she fears injuries from devils. He suggests she come stop by their apartment again sometime (more out of drunken guilt than actual like for her, but it's a start to them becoming friends).

-castle cr.ashers. it is hit hack-and-slash game castle cr.ashers. i take the place of red knight and meg takes the place of the blue princess. we’re together before the plot starts and they avoid getting kidnapped so we go through everything together <3. eventually we meet doug who has the role of the conehead groom, we defeat him and he begrudgingly joins us, we have an enemies-to-lovers journey, the end <3. i’m very fond of this silly au because doug is very cute when you put her in a situation like this :) also cosmeg adventures!!!!!! <333

SIGH this is gonna be the longest section. since they’re on opposing sides in their og ff.vii universe there are a lot of complexities that come with it, and the aus are mostly playing around with that by getting rid of that element completely……..

-turk!chrome au. this one’s kind of simple it just means they work together instead of against each other, and also the number of possible scenarios goes up a lot because of the close proximity. ciss.nei is also present in this au and her n chrome are both turk partners and qpps!!!!!

-octo.path 2. INITIALLY in this au chrome n reno were both thieves (chrome being dancer class who was also story-wise a thief, reno being actual thief class) who because of Unlikely Situations ended up being traveling partners, but THEN i realized HEY. WHY DIDNT I MAKE RENO A BLACKSNAKE. so he’s a blacksnake now. i don’t know why i didn’t think of that he’z literally a new delsta guy. and there are jester npcs in new delsta!!! so chrome can fit in pretty well without having to change much about him. i really like the vibe of this one but parts of it give me emotionz . you get it. moving on,

-i did think of a b.aldur’s gate 3 au. i guess it’s similar to the scrapped octo.path one.. they’re both rogues (chrome arcane trickster, reno assassin), meet after the tadpole debacle and decide trying to cure it together is the best option. (it might be in-character for reno to be like Eh. if i die i die *walks off alone* but i’m not lettinf him do that they’re doing this together somehow. maybe when they do the tadpole mind-connect thing he sees something interesting from chrome’s past and is like hmmm. i dunno.) this one is mostly for funny dnd moments (they’re my comedy ship after all.) such as chrome being like “uh no i don’t trust you to disarm that i’ll do it.” n reno being like “you sure?” and then chrome crit-failing and them standing there in silence with the blinded status effect. (“…see, i knew that was gonna h-” “don’t say anything.”)

-HFNDJ I JUST REMEMBERED I MADE THEM A GHOST TR.ICK AU. I DONT REMEMBER THE DEAL WITH IT HOLD ON. it was like . chrome died and became a ghost like s.issel……. and found reno dead too, used his ghost tricks to save him and ended up helping him with his shady real life work stuff …… ? it conflicts with regular chrome’s morals but if you mess with it the concept is really fun. ghost partner in crime. mind communication shenanigans. i wanted to draw fake screenshots for them in the art style hfndj i should do that sometime.

-oh i do have a rune f.actory au for them i guess. just in concept though <3. i can’t think of??? many canon rf charas that act similar to reno?? but he would have leon-esque dialogue humor-wise (AGH). and if chrome is the protag, giving him supposed “disliked items” does nothing because he just thinks it’s funny. game mechanic where you CANNOT lower this guy’s affection . i don’t think he would be affiliated with the sechs empire but he would have something mysterious like that going on… and he wouldn’t say much about himself so maybe his heart points would be capped lower ‘til a certain point like doug’s are??? and he wouldn’t tell you what gifts he likes either. there’d be a dialogue branch like “so what do you like, then. :/” “where’s the fun in that? try figuring it out.” and then his reactions to gifts onward would change based on that. (“really? thought you knew me better than that.”) (“hey, you’re gettin’ warmer!”) (“you’re puttin’ a lot of effort into this game. almost like you *care* about givin’ me shit.” “UH, *NO—*”)

(I-uh-I saw the Reverse Self-Ship post you made via a mutual and I noticed you were cool and also an adult One Piece fan so-uh-I'mma leave my lil infodump if you don't mind. Also if you have any pronouns you prefer let me know so I can use the proper ones!)

So as of last week I'm now holding hands with the entire Monster Trio from One Piece. Zoro was an immediate infatuation (and the reason I started watching it aside from just finally having time to invest), meanwhile Sanji and especially Luffy I thought were platonic but I was proven wrong pretty quick.

Uh-I headcanon Sanji as a closeted bisexual and in my little self-insert AU I end up being his kind of "bi-awakening" I guess or at least the first thing that makes him ask the important questions. Uh-I have one self-insert that has a good amount of plotting but I've been primarily using an isekai trope for self-inserting. And since it's already an AU for the isekai and the self-inserting itself-and because I'm really attached to the concept of magic(*cough*andimstillnotoverowlhouseending*cough*)-I made my self insert a descendant of the nearly extinct species of magic users aka witches. So I'd have to figure all that out along with the universe itself and Bi panic.

I think the isekai concept came along as I got a lot more attached to the Straw Hats in general since I'm always a sucker for friendship and found family tropes. And when I got into One Piece life had been taking a bad turn so this is kind of an escape for me.

Back to the self-ship though-I'm still not sure how the relationship would start-but I'd end up being just this 5'4 pink-haired autistic male who ended up being the boyfriend to 3 big strong (but also lovable) pirates. And since I'm shorter and they're also a lot stronger than me, they pick me up a lot out of nowhere just because I was there. I'd take cooking lessons from Sanji, I'd nap with Zoro, and I'd teach Luffy some drawing. But I can't have one without the others now, I love them too much now.

I have little nicknames I'd have them call me, some even pre-relationship. Sanji would call me "Cotton-Candy Head" because of the pink hair (but with a lot more affection than when he started calling Zoro Moss-Head) and then "Little Prince". Zoro would call me "Pinky" for the hair and then after I broke out of my shell a bit he'd call me "Puppy" because once I get comfortable around people I got big ol' golden-retriever energy. Luffy would probably call me "Nugget" and "Squishy" (I have a round face and also I can see Luffy looking at me and having a moment kinda like that one of Dory from Finding Nemo where she goes "I Shall Call Him Squishy And He Shall Be Mine. And He Shall Be My Squishy")

And then I have nicknames for them:

Zoro- Matcha Boy/Man, Teddy Bear (I feel like considering the naps and stuff, he would give good snuggles. I mean-the plush I have of him is nice to snuggle with.)

I feel like Atsushi is definitely more spontaneous in AtsuDany relationship, he is the one to kind of abruptly ask without thinking about it. Such as suggesting to go for a walk in the middle of the night or maybe go to the pier to watch the sunset. He kind of asks simply, especially when I am the most stressed and feeling bad anxiety 🥲 I have taken notice how often it happens when a simple moment to break away from the area causing me stress, especially with a friend or loved one, definitely helps a lot. Atsushi is definitely more spontaneous in the relationship, especially when it comes to de-stressing Dany. I think it also works vice versa, Danielle often encouraging him to take a run with her at night or star gazing, maybe even going to a cat cafe! Cats always are a sweet furry friend, especially with a tiger mans! 🥰

In DanyJay relationship, I think Danielle is more spontaneous, especially in Digimon Au. Considering Darkwolfmon’s presence, Dany is more free and willing to take a chance that I otherwise would hesitate in. While Jason can spontaneous in his own way, he isn’t one to outwardly suggest something, unless Dany is severely taking a heavy toll mentally. He isn’t really one to complain and just kind of goes along with what other suggests are fun. Such as when Dany suggests to take a fly with her on Cyberwolfmon, Jason is nervous but all for it and honestly becomes a sweet romantic thing~ I have claimed this moment as the first, official moment he and Dany get together and also first kiss ☺️💖

What Dany would have for Atsushi in the beginning of their friendship would probably be “Atsushi-kun🐯” then “Atsu-Kun 🐯💕” when she is growing feelings before finalizing with “Mi Tigre 💖🐯”. Her assigned photo of him would probably be a cute picture of his tiger self in the start. In relationship, she changed it to one she snuck a picture of him when out on a date. It’s one of him handsomely looking at the sunset, before he began to snicker laughing. 🥰

With Jason, at the beginning of friendship was “Jason 🐺⚡️” then “Jay 🐺⚡️”. It took the two of them in Digimon Au forever to really get together, but once Dany had true and real feelings for him and they got together, she changed it to “My dearest Jay 💕”. His picture at the start was one she took of him with Raiwolfmon, and current one, relationship wise, is a picture of him gazing at the camera lovingly and softly. Looking beyond it to Dany UwU 💖.

Atsushi would put me under “Dany-chan ✨” in the beginning of friendship, slowly changing it to “Dany 💖✨” when his feelings for her grow. In relationship, he changes it to “Darling 💜✨”. His first picture of Dany is one he cropped from a whole picture taken of her during her small welcome party. In relationship, is one he took of her while she slept, cuddling a tiger plush she gifted him for his birthday.🥺💖

Jason would definitely have Dany as “Danielle 🐺💕”, adding the hearts for his first affections for her. Having a crush on her since they meet, which did dwindle a little when her attention was towards someone else, changing to “Dany 🐺✨”. Once in a relationship, he changed her contact to “My Always 🐺💖”. His picture of her is one of her and Darkwolfmon at the start, and changes to one of her during their wedding party in the Digital World. Hmm 🤔 an inside joke Eh? Am not good at what is funny to some but I think that is the point of an inside joke ^^’ it makes the party in question laugh and giggle in fondness or joke.

AtsuDany: I think an inside joke between them is the whole concept of wolves and tigers not really getting along together. Considering their abilities, many think they wouldn’t be a good pair or couldn’t be close friends. To which everyone is wrong in honestly 😤 it makes the both of them giggle with laughter at the assumption people have when they really are fond of each other; they have much in common and have a peacefulness with their abilities. If anything his tiger and her wolf are playful together and find each other appealing, in friendship and as mates later. 💕

I think it’s most definitely funny when someone who doesn’t know of their abilities says it, they kind of just start snorting with laughter and looking like silly idiots when the person looks at them confused.

DanyJay: An inside joke between them is essentially explaining how they met to anyone who wants to know~ Dany came in saving his life when a Digimon manifested and attacked him and his friends in an outing. She came swooping in on Cyberwolfmon, kind of slipping off as she wasn’t anticipating his weight and height (tiny stubborn lass is ambitious). They were caught just fine soon after by Cyberwolfmon! But essentially that whole ordeal was kind of hilarious considering how smol Dany is and how tol Jason is. While it was also terrifying if her Digimon didn’t come swooping in, it is still something they laugh about and is a sweet moment looking back on how they meet and gradually sparked a flame between them that lead to their forever. 💖 Some people are like “aww” others are like “👀 yall wild”
