Selfshipping / yume culture originates from japanese dream novels* starting in the early 00s.

You know what was banned on ff.n in the 00s? Reader insert fic. You know what was heavily derided and mocked by fandom at large until the 2010s? Reader insert fic and OC x canon. The infamous My Immortal is literally mocking these genres.

Being proship is, at its core, being anti-censorship. To write, post, and enjoy censored media-- i.e. reader insert fic-- is to be anti-censorship. Ao3 was founded by anti-censorship individuals in direct response to fic genres like reader insert being banned on other websites. Ao3 is, inherently, proship.

So, while the exact origins of yumejin culture might be obscured*, the people who carried on being yumejn and writing your fics and imagines were doing so under the proship ethos of doing whatever the hell you want in fiction despite whatever the asshole next to you is saying.

Also? Anti-shippers literally invented their own self insert tag called "selflovingly" and "safeshipping." Use one of those if you can't accept the inherently anti-censorship nature of selfshipping. :)

*if anyone has more info on the earliest dream novels I'd love to see it so I could analyze the common themes, but unfortunately what I'm finding is largely in Japanese and a lot have been lost to the nature of old web deactivation + a lot of games being hosted on old cellphones that are no long usable.

What I can say, from other interactions with Japanese artists in the current time, is that anti-shipping as a whole is an extremely western phenomenon. The concept seems to not exist in Japanese fandom and I've seen more than a few Japanese artists get very confused and frustrated that their ship art will suddenly get rude and vitriolic reactions on western sites (namely twt lol) if it depicts dark topics or unhealthy relationships.
