I definitely argue for more the former than the latter.
Like, Phoenix is def not always up to date on the newest thing - so maybe there are things he's just LEGITIMATELY unaware of until they're relevant to him.
And isn't that really how shit works for....pretty much everyone?
Also I'd argue that while Edgeworth is saying "every" legal professional, he's probably really talking about the prosecutorial side of things. In the Matt Engarde case, he straight told Phoenix that the De Killer is an INCREDIBLY well-kept secret among the police and prosecutors only. And only a select handful of that.
Phoenix likely knows of cases where De Killer is ultimately the murderer, but those are likely going to frequently be left unsolved and De Killer's name is clearly left out from the media. The police see the calling card, the prosecutors see it and go FUCK, because they already know that the crime scene is going to, essentially, be useless. De Killer is perfect. De Killer doesn't LEAVE real evidence. He's a random man with no connection to the murdered individual and I assure you he does not kill each person the exact same way every time, either. So the media wouldn't catch wind of it being a serial killer, either.
If Adrian Andrews hadn't messed with the crime scene AND hadn't taken the calling card, Miles would have no doubt stepped in IMMEDIATELY, the second that card was entered into evidence. I highly doubt that Franziska would have been made privy to the De Killer's cases. She's a damn good prosecutor, but there's a level of finesse that Miles has that she doesn't have (just yet - she'll get there. You see improvement, even, when she comes back in AA3). Also Japan (where the games take place and the localization team is bouncing off of) is just as if not more sexist than the US - her gender would definitely have an impact on whether she would be deemed trustworthy enough to know.
Which, by the way, is absolutely fucking TERRIBLE because the real reason NOT to tell her is that she's a Von Karma and Manfred was obviously corrupt as FUCK and Edgeworth only just barely has beaten the Demon Prosecutor allegations, thanks to Phoenix coming along and absolutely reshaping his worldview, by Franziska's prosecutorial debut, but I DIGRESS.
The whole legal world probs does know about the one case the Turnabout Terror lost; it's probably a case study used in law school - because there was no way there WASN'T a huge amount of media involvement. Two rival television stars, of competing television shows???? Hell yeah the media would have been in a frenzy out the GATE. And since court records can be requested, there ain't no WAY the court records for the Matt Engarde case didn't leak out to the Ace Attorney world as a whole.
Knowing that the AAI games take place after the original trilogy, Miles is likely operating on the assumption that the Matt Engarde case has been studied by most legal professionals, if not all. Phoenix's knowledge about De Killer came about when anything involving De Killer was disclosed on a need to know basis. He needed to know.
Before that case, he wouldn't have needed to. Because most people did not. After, though?
Yeah, after things would have been changed, across the board, for the AA world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this implies one of two things: either the engarde case was a huge deal in-universe and de killer's profile rose since then, or phoenix wright is the most oblivious motherfucker in the entire legal practice

hi! i'd like to talk about losing. you don't have to read this if you don't want to, but i wanted to write it, and guess what, it's my blog. i just like this team a lot and i'm feeling a little maudlin about my guys and a little sick to fucking death of the shit i'm seeing all over kingdom come from 'fans'. so here we are.
So You Became A Fan Of A Living Legend But The Hockey Team Is Bad: a commentary.
look. this is not the most fun i've ever had watching hockey, and i'm quite sure a lot of people feel the same way. the penguins are bad this season! they were bad last season too, but there's something very special about the extent to which they are shit right now. and those are not fun games to watch.
but here's the thing: who cares.
like, idk. there's so much god damn negativity surrounding this team and its performance right now, and i'm guilty of contributing to it as well, because yeah of course i'd rather watch a team win in decisive fashion most nights. of course i'd rather dream about may and june and the stanley cup. of course i want to watch that happen again for my favorite players. like, duh.
but. it's probably not going to. not if these players get what they want, which is to play together on this team until they're ready to retire.
and you know what? that's fine. if they're fine with it, who on earth am i to not be?
i think we all have the same reaction when we see idiots online saying things like 'sid doesn't deserve this trade him to a contender'. and that's because we are smarter and more refined fans who understand that what sidney crosby DESERVES is to select how and where and when his career ends. is it on a team that sucks? then that means being here is more important to him than getting that fourth cup. staying with geno and kris and the penguins as a whole, never putting on another NHL logo, is more significant to him personally than another victory. and isn't that special? isn't that worth celebrating?
of course we know all of that because we're better at being fans than the uncles online who are writing weird fanfic in their heads. but. guess what that comes with:
losing.
and losing badly, in the case of this season.
i am here to tell you that sitting and bitching about it helps no one. right now, what we have to watch and celebrate is our favorite players still playing at a high level. they're still doing cool stuff on the ice. and they're doing it TOGETHER. this is what they wanted. so your options are either to hate it and sit in negativity about it each and every game, OR readjust your mindset and learn to enjoy what we have while we have it.
we are watching myth-making happen live. we are watching living legends play hockey. this is a privilege and an honor and it's not something most fanbases get EVER. and we have two! can you believe it?
there are things i would have rather seen done differently over the last couple of years. as far back as 2019 there were moves i disagreed with and changes that could have been made that perhaps could have extended their window. and of course the 2022 series against the rangers, that was a very good team that got hit by injuries at the absolute worst possible time, and probably that was their last chance as a core to compete. it's frustrating to watch that stuff happen when you have no control over it.
the pittsburgh penguins were high-end competitors and contenders for seventeen years straight. that's insane and unheard of in this league. they're not anymore. and the price you pay for almost two decades of dominance is...being bad. when you're competing you trade prospects and draft picks for win-now players. sometimes those work out, most of the time they don't. with the amount of winning this team has done, even the trades that didn't work were worth it, because it meant they were trying.
there are no fanbases who are going to feel bad for penguins fans right now. that's also why we're getting so much attention from the national media. people aren't used to this team being as bad as it is, and people like watching downfalls. that's fine. most of those fans have never watched their team win, and most of them never will. so if their joy is coming from sidney crosby's team being bad....well, love and light, you know?
and we shouldn't feel bad for ourselves either. this is what happens. this is how it goes. this is the price for the band staying together.
i dunno, guys. this is a disjointed rant. it's just so effing hard to be kicked in the nuts everywhere you go with unrelenting negativity. it's on twitter it's in the articles and yes, it's here too. but if you can't be a fan of a team when they're bad, then i'm sorry but you're not a fan of the team (or certain players), you're a fan of winning. and NO team wins all the time every year. that's not how sports work.
we are lucky. at least, i feel lucky! don't you? gosh, sidney crosby scored his 600th career goal tonight. evgeni malkin is over 500 goals on his career. can you believe that? it's amazing to watch.
and it's going to be over in less than two years. do we really want to waste it by wishcasting something that's not going to happen instead of enjoying what we DO have?
if the media bums you out, don't listen. don't read the articles. don't go on twitter. dry your tears on the stanley cup banners that sid and geno hung up—there are three to choose from!

If I were to adopt a bird, how much out of cage time would it need? I work from home, so is six hours enough? Is it fine for a bird to hang around an apartment? Could I leave it at home occasionally during the evening (6-10pm), or would it get lonely?
There is no clear cut answer for this one since parrots are so dynamic with what they can and cannot tolerate. Some birds adapt fine to less out of cage time while others need someone home all the time, and some prioritize strict routines over the amount of time. In general I would say 6 hours is typically accepted by most small/ medium parrots. They’re often very active first thing in the morning, nap and roost through the middle of the day, and then become active again when foraging for dinner prior to bed. They run on 10-12 hours of daylight and then sleep the other 12-14 so you can typically get them on a consistent schedule to allow yourself that freedom in the evening without much worry . (Start their day at 6 and they’ll be ready for bed by 6pm)
A bird cannot free roam in an apartment without supervision, even the little guys are notorious for chewing through drywall, electrical cables, or trying to find nesting sites in dark small spaces and getting themselves lost or hurt. It’s best to use a large cage when someone isn’t going to be home to watch them to prevent those issues. Other than that the only concern with apartment living is their volume, it’s quite common for people to have to rehome birds or be kicked out of their apartment because of how loud they are. Parrots scream when they’re excited and happy, definitely make sure you select a species that’s screams aren’t going to cause you to lose your home (or look in to domesticated birds like pigeons that are quieter and just as affectionate!)
On the topic of volume be sure that you evaluate whether or not your work from home job is compatible with a screaming parrot. If you have to answer client calls and things like that it might not be compatible with a screaming parrot
Whether or not they get lonely is again, another very individual question. Some parrots adapt just fine to not having people around, some really struggle without the presence of another bird, others need minor assistance through things like white noise machines.

Side note if you're one of the thousands of people suffering from a hibernate/away mode problem on windows 11 and that was later introduced with a windows 10 update for god knows why
You know, where you close your laptop or it goes into sleep mode and inexplicably won't wake up no matter how much keyboard crashing and button pressing you do, forcing you to hard off and restart all programs/potentially lose files.
The bane of my existence, really.
It's a mixture of five thousand problems forced along by the bios updates. It's an absolute nightmare and despite multiple attempts to command prompt my way out of it, I had to go the slow and shitty way in the end so here's how you do THAT:
Most people fix it is by going into the power options menu and disabling hibernate/away mode in the advanced power menu
This works for a total of five minutes-- roughly the amount of time that it takes windows to push out a new shitty update and ruin everything.
So to make it last a little longer so that you can experience the joy of being able to close your computer until the next bios update rather than getting fucked over every update
Restart and boot up the BIOS, expand power management and enable USB wake support or untick, save, and then return and enable USB wake support before saving once again🙄
exit BIOS, boot normally.
Pull up device manager.
Scroll down until you see a section marked universal serial bus controllers. What you're looking for is probably going to be named USB Root Hub rather than "-insert processor name- us bullshit". Right click on that generically named motherfucker, properties. Near the end of the tabs in the property menu is the power management tab.
Unlock allow computer to turn this device off to save power.
Now if you're lucky and God is willing, it might be fixed
If the world is shit and you have one of the windows laptops that requires this, you might run into a problem where you still need to go into device manager and click your keyboard, open properties, and then select the power management tab-- not everyone is going to have this tab because fucking windows man.
From there in the little power management section of your menu, pick a box that looks roughly like "allow this device to wake computer from sleep"
Hopefully, your computer is now fixed and you can close it without it going into a shitty lower power state and refusing to wake up now.
The general belief seems to be that since windows pushed through updates to prolong battery life but doesn't really give half a shit as to what computers are running windows or how they're built, when the USB hub is sent into low power mode it pretty much turns off your mouse, key board, and all ports because of how they're connected. In most cases, the power button continues to work to some extent in this state, giving you a taunting white or green light and letting you know your work is waiting for you, but won't wake your PC and is only useful to give your computer the one finger salute and hard off it.
Windows has known about this problem since roughly the launch of windows 11 and proceeded to give absolutely no shits, even passing along a similar update to windows 10 laptops. Every now and then when you get an update related to the bios or with something that even vaguely looks like the word power it will re enable this nonsensical hell state and you will have to do this again.
I got a laptop with Windows 11 for an IT course so I can get certified, and doing the first time device set-up for it made me want to commit unspeakable violence
Windows 11 should not exist, no one should use it for any reason, it puts ads in the file explorer and has made it so file searches are also web searches and this cannot be turned off except through registry editing. Whoever is responsible for those decisions should be killed, full stop.
Switch to linux, it's free and it's good.

Chickens likely domesticated themselves the same way wolves did which is basically by hanging around our settlements and eating our refuse.
Living with chickens in this sort of way was likely happening way before the estimated times of 8,000- 10,000 years ago. The relationship was likely already long established it was just during that time some chickens started developing smaller/weaker adrenal glands which caused them to become much easier to raise and handle which eventually lead to the domesticated chicken we know of today (and how that happened so suddenly is a completely different but very interesting topic)
Also due to this you could argue that there isn't any true wild red jungle fowl left untouched and uninfluenced by humans anymore. Not only due to constant cross breeding with domestic chickens but because red jungle fowl are still doing what their ancestors did in their current range, if there is a town or village nearby the bravest junglefowl will still choose to intermingle with the village and eat the refuse, agricultural byproducts, and waste. People will still catch and care for these "wild" birds like their ancestors did. This isn't to say we shouldn't try our best to preserve the wild red jungle fowls wild genetics, their should be populations left to be in their natural environment but it's likely they are not truly same wild birds they once were thousands of years ago and honestly that's OK because thats how its been for thousands of years.

yall are about to piss me off by not having any PASSING basic knowledge of the way the u.s. military manipulates its recruits into joining by typing up one of your uninformed, unresearched, unempathetic, individualistic, unbelievably annoying posts about how 100% of the people in the military ended up there because they just Love America So Damn Much! they're extremely mature and informed at time of recruitment, they can totally leave anytime they want, they totally had tons of other avenues in life they could've taken, there was no rush at all to get income as fast as possible, and everyone in the military also totally is part of the combat divisions and personally enjoys being IN the military very much, big believers of violence. everyone in the military is shooting guns all day, that's how that works. they LOVE BLOODSHED. also I love the "amewicans haha" twang to this type of shit because you're actually TOTALLY stealing our Thing, which is turning systemic issues into Individual Issues. Instead of talking about the powers that be, it's so Personal Choice up in here. It's, "well you shouldn't have done it then. I totally wouldn't because I know better." you don't wanna talk about the military industrial complex as a whole, and you don't want to talk about recruiters, you just want to pin the blame on Specific Individual People one-by-one, as if they're responsible for the system that they're being ground up in. someone was in the military? bad person, no matter what. it's easier to believe that, I guess, than to acknowledge that Normal People (with high school educations) are manipulated and incentivized into joining a system that is Bad. at like age 18. but yeah no that 18 year old should have just been smarter lol haha anyway here are some screenshots for no particular reason
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
side note this reply of someone going "umm just get loans and go into a high paying field it's easy XD" as a direct response to someone trying to explain how most americans joining the military are being funneled in that direction out of a need for money.
Tumblr media
and another person who Decided that americans join the military just CLENCHING their teeth thinking of other people, and not thinking completely selfishly about their own selves and their own income/housing/healthcare.
Tumblr media
#I had a longer post w more bullshit in it but ukw nobody's even gonna read THIS one. so.#dumb ass cunts seriously LMAO just the individualism of it all....#we're all just selectively forgetting that most people join the military straight out of high school / after failing to kickstart#their lives so they don't know shit yet and they are categorically not educated and don't have money#you NEED money and have been groomed by recruiters ALREADY into believing this is#The Best and Only to make a survivable amount of money without a college education-- bc they can't afford college btw#and they don't want to take on student debt either bc everyone already knows what a big fuckeroo that is#recruiters WILL DO ANYTHING TO GET YOU TO JOIN. they will KEEP CALLING YOU. they'll answer your questions#to make it sound like this is going to be a GREAT life decision. you can get all KINDS of jobs (true)#they love to say the thing about how only about 15% of the military will actually see combat in any way#they love to list all the jobs where you will literally just be working at an office or a pharmacy or in tech etc etc etc#the recruiters are offering housing healthcare steady pay and BONUSES if you sign on for longer.#so you let your guard down because you were so scared of the actual fighting. BECAUSE YOU'RE 18 IN THIS SCENARIO BTW.#you cunts will not meet anyone who hates the military as much as people who are NOW DONE working in the military#you don't know enough when they get you and then either you stay placated by the benefits or you scramble away as fast as possible#the number one military haters are people who know what goes on bc they already did it#source: I LIVE NEXT TO A MILITARY BASE LMAO PEOPLE HATE IT HERE!! they are NORMAL PEOPLE#I need you to get it into your head that the people committing atrocities in war were NORMAL when they joined#and that for every person in the military who's actively shedding blood there's 20 who do PAPERWORK#and they both are being put in the same category by you!! and they are BOTH being controlled by the same system!!#sergle.txt#I hate yall I really do.

Hey! Just wanted to make a public post very quickly: that i'm very sorry but I'm likely not going to move forward with any commissions on my end that haven't already been paid for, even if I've reached back to you prior. I'm genuinely very sorry about it but with my current job at hand being lengthy daily as is, the added stress of trying to finish commissions "in a proper amount of time" is too much for me at the moment. I have less than a handful I will finish & people I still want to get back to in the meantime. I just wanted to give a heads up!

Can we talk to Vekeso?
You cannot!
tbh, I was getting very burnt out because of how many active plotthreads and muses I have hanging, and the reason I had for writing this particular three part mystery drabble is that I was committed to not making the people involved in the case permanent characters on my blog! Just to take some of the pressure of myself and have fun for a bit. It was very relieving for me to structure this for myself his way. I may make art of them and Barely can allude to them and they will be part of the story, but I think as a rule of thumb they will probably never appear outside of their relevant barely drabbles or be available for asks.
Just think of it as a classic mystery format! not a lot of reoccuring characters in columbo, sherlock or pierot side the detectives! because the case is new every time and its nice sometimes to have a clean slate. Barely Shyeck, titular detective, however, will be reoccurring and may have many adventures and an overarching arc <3
regardless id like to apologize to the ftc gays on my own behalf for not letting you talk with the vampire cowboy who is a cowboy and a vampire. I know this was cruel /j

Summary: During their stay with the Amazons, Dite asks Jacqueline an (admittedly loaded) question. Or: The day Jacqueline fell very very hard for Dite and had 0 idea for a solid 300 years.
---
"Can I ask you something?"
"Hmm?" Jacqueline blinked once, very slowly, before coming back down to earth. "Oh! Yeah, absolutely. What's up?"
Dite bit her lip, pulling her braid forward and petting it. She frowned, her wings fluttering anxiously. "So like, it's a bit of a weird question. Maybe. Um, I think maybe you may not want to answer it? I think it's crossing a few boundaries but like. These past few months with you have been really, really fun!"
Jacqueline laughed. "I like that your idea of fun involves a whole lot of violence."
"We're learning ancient fighting techniques from the Amazons themselves! It's GREAT knowledge to have and absolutely EYE OPENING and we are rocking these outfits!"
"I like the detail in the chest plates," Jacqueline said, poking hers. There were swirls and ferns all over it, snowflakes twirling about at the edges of the details. "And there's some cool tricks we're learning too!"
"YEAH! It's FUN!" Dite said, hands up in the air, wings mirroring her.
Jacqueline laughed, loudly and from the heart. Her eyes lit up; the wind gently blew her loose hairs back, the thawed tresses lifting in the breeze.
"I've seen this whole different side of you," Dite sighed, looking up fondly and stretching out her legs. The waves crashed on the shore, the surf almost hitting their feet. "It's so…free! And full of joy! I never knew you were this…happy?"
"You said that like it was a question."
"It’s not the word I wanted. It's just…whenever we’ve met at work, when you got back from um. Your…"
"Recovery?"
"Is that what it was?"
Jacqueline looked thoughtful for a moment, shrugging. "You could say that, yeah. That and being like, way too small to go to important meetings like that on my own."
"You’re still small."
Snow hit her leg; she laughed, grabbing what she could before it melted and plopping it right on the sprite's head.
The sprite laughed, grinning up at the goddess beside her. A big, toothy grin that stretched from ear to ear. She lifted her hand, a pile of snow appearing in her palm, and plopped it on top of her head.
"Plop!" she said, still wearing that goofy  grin.
Dite laughed. "Is that even comfortable?"
"Is for me! Cold doesn't bug me at all," she said with a warm smile, the snow already melting down her back.
"You’re so silly. And goofy! I like that a lot! I like that I got to meet this side of you. You’re always so…reserved during summits, and during our legate meetings, you’re not as reserved but you’re still a little. Y'know. Cautious, I guess. But here, as we've been hanging out and learning and vacationing sort of, it's this whole new you I've met! But like, it's not a new you. I think it actually is you and you’re very careful to guard your you. What I'm trying to say is, I think you're the most fun person I have ever met and I cannot express enough how much it means to me that you shared yourself with me!"
Jacqueline blinked, feeling her face getting very hot as she flushed. AGAIN. What was it about this girl that made her get all blushy and uncomfortably warm? She felt like she was gonna burst into flames.
"Oh, I've flustered you again, haven't I? I'm sorry."
"It’s okay! I'm not very…I don’t really…um. I don’t have a lot of friends? Most of them have died because, y'know, humans and stuff," she scratched the back of her neck, frowning thoughtfully. "I think that takes a toll after a while, you know? And it gets easier, but also…it doesn't. And I'm not. I don't. It's. Hmm. I don’t have a bad rep, but I'm kinda stuck under a not so great one and a lot of magibeans tend to uh, assume the worst. But you…you don't! You didn't. There's only been one other person in my life who's done that, and it still kinda throws me off every so often."
"Oh?" Dite asked, trying to ignore the little itty bitty pang of jealousy that suddenly turned up. "Who's that?"
"Bernard? Santa's arch elf?"
"Oh! He's nice! I like him," she said with a fond smile. "You're friends?"
"I think so! I'd say we hang out a lot but like, mostly I go bother him when I'm feeling down or something crazy happens that I'm too afraid to tell my parents about," she said, pulling her legs up and hugging them. "He's always been very sweet and nice with me, and lately he's been snarky and I'm kind of liking it, actually! It's different! More fun."
Dite was relieved to feel it wasn't in a like-like way (pros to being Cupid's Legate and also daughter, she suspected). "Banter's fun."
"It kind of is!"
In the distance, the clatter of swords on shields rang out. The waves kept crashing, seagulls squawking high above them.
"Why are you alone?" she asked, pulling up her own legs.
"What do you mean?"
Dite let out a puff of air, her breath blowing a stray hair off her face. "They didn't tell us what happened. Just that something had happened, and we wouldn't be seeing you for a bit. Then you came back from your recovery, and you were alone. Forgive me if I'm crossing boundaries; I don’t mean to. And maybe I'm way off base with where we're at, and I shouldn't ask at all! But I'm gonna. The question I wanted to ask you was about all…that. What happened?"
Somehow, the sprite managed to make herself even tinier. She hugged her legs tighter, burrowing her nose between her knees. She looked so sad; so hurt.
Dite immediately felt a pang of regret.
"I'm so sorry, I shouldn’t have asked! I didn’t mean to ruin the mood."
"Oh, it's okay," Jacqueline replied. "You didn't bring down the mood." She shifted her head, forehead still on her arms, but eyes looking right into Dite's now. "My brother left."
"Oh," Dite said.
"Yeah. From what I've been told, it was probably a long time coming. Nobody thought it'd be as…explosive as it was, though. He got into a big fight with our Dad, and our Mom had to separate them. Elements went flying. Stuff was freezing. He whipped up this MAHOOSIVE storm," she leaned back, throwing her arms to the sides, palms out. "It tanked all of Crystal Springs for like, a week. Transportation was out all around."
"That must've been scary."
"I imagine it was. You see, um. I was a little bit unconscious. A lot maybe."
"Oh?"
"If you hear about what happened the day he left, everyone will tell you about the big old storm. It was bad! Ice storms are the nastiest. They freeze everything all while causing whiteout conditions. You can't see or go anywhere and the wind makes drifts and it's sucky conditions all around."
"Even for someone like you?"
"Actually they're kinda fun for someone like me. But this one wasn't. They talk about the storm all the time; and there were a couple of casualties. They were all healed, of course," she added quickly, sticking out a hand as if to reassure.
"Of course. The Springs."
Her fingers curled in; she brought her hand right back to her side. "Right. Yes. The Springs. Healed them. Once they were accessible, of course. And most everyone was able to handle their injuries until then."
"Nobody died."
"Somebody almost did."
"Who?"
Jacqueline looked over at Dite, a tinge of fear in her eyes.
"You?!"
She nodded.
"Oh no," Dite said, breathlessly. She put her hand up to her mouth, eyes wide and watery.
"Are you crying?"
"Not yet," she blubbered. "What happened? Are you okay?  You almost died?!"
"Not yet," she repeated with a laugh, pulling her hair forward. She reached up, her fingers gently making their way through the braid and taking it apart. It was already falling; her hair did not like staying back. "I got caught in the crossfire."
"You went after him?"
She nodded. "I was small, you know? I had no idea what was going on but I knew that sometimes he'd do bad things. And it seemed like this was one of those times. It got really loud downstairs and he was late for our snow date so I went to see what was happening and found the downstairs hall an absolute ice rink, and Mom and Dad in the kitchen, hurt. Not moving. Awake! Talking, but stuck. My brother left. I followed him out. Words were said, and he hurt me."
"Not with words."
"No. I mean they hurt too, of course. But no." She sighed, her hand absentmindedly drifting to her midsection. "They've taught us about all sorts of weaponry here. Your bracelet is so full of charms now," she pointed to it, Dite lifting her wrist. The charms clinked together. "But they haven't taught us about one of the most dangerous weapons. Ice. I can shape it into anything," she said, a glowing palm coming up.
In it, a solid cube appeared. "I can make it round. Square. Soft. Hard..." As she spoke, the ice in her palm shifted, matching the shapes she was listing, and then the textures. "Sharp."
In her hand, the ice shifted; it poked outwards, growing sharp. "And if it's sharp enough, and thrown with enough force, well…"
Lifting her arm the way they had been taught with the javelins just last week, she launched the icicle. It hit the ground with a sharp shtick, sticking itself deep into the sand. It twanged, briefly shuddering before stilling and beginning to melt.
"He stabbed you."
"Three times."
"Oh god."
"I know. One minute I was looking up at him, telling him not to go, not to leave me. The next, a glow; then something sharp, and then everything went black. Next thing I knew, I was waking up in the Springs, looking into my mom's eyes. I've never heard her sob the way she did when I woke up. I've also never been squished as hard as I was by her after that."
Dite giggled. Her eyes widened. "Oh! I'm so sorry I should not have laughed--"
"It’s okay. I like your laugh. And it is kind of funny. The squishy bit, not the stabby bit."
"No, that's not funny at all!"
"I've got some sick scars now," she said. "You've seen them, I'm sure."
"I had noticed them, yeah. Gosh, I'm so sorry, Jacqueline. That's…a lot. And you were so small!"
"Apparently I still am," she joked, a thumb idly flicking away the wet under her eyes.
"You may be tiny but you are so, so tall to me. I mean, to go through all that, and do everything you've done to get here to this point? To survive? That's amazing."
"You think?"
"I know."
The lapsed into silence again. Dite's right wing hovered above Jacqueline, the goddess thoughtful.
"Do you miss him?"
Jacqueline stilled.
Dite glanced her way, concerned she had maybe turned herself to ice. But she hadn’t! She had just stopped idly swaying. Tears filled her eyes, trailing down her cheeks.
"So much," she admitted, the rest of the words smothered under a sob that clawed its way up her throat.
Dite's wing fell, encompassing the sprite and pulling her close. She shuffled in the sand, moving closer to Jacqueline and throwing her arms around her, bringing her in tightly. She did what her Mom did whenever Dite felt down; rubbed her back gently. Kept her wings around them. Murmured nice things in her ear like there there, let it all out. That's it. You'll feel better after a good cry, and so on.
The sprite uncurled, burying herself in Dite's chest plate. Droplets of wet began to appear in the sand around them, the poor thing shaking with how hard she was crying.
She didn't know how long they sat there. How long she held her little buddy. A silly little name that Jacqueline had laughed at, but now, Dite was thinking, maybe wasn't really...accurate? Appropriate? Whatever the word, it didn't feel right anymore.
The sun began to set, the glow of dusk reflecting in the sea. At some point as the sun went down, Jacqueline's shudders slowed, until finally she lifted her head off the chest plate. She sniffled, curling up against Dite's side until she could rest her head on her shoulder.
"I'm sorry. That was embarrassing. I didn't think I'd…gah! I'm sorry!"
"Don’t be! I asked. I'm sorry for bringing it up. I should've been a bit more tactful, maybe. I didn’t realize how traumatic…"
"Nobody does. Nobody ever asked. And nobody's really explained things to me, either."
"Is that why the wall?"
She nodded against her arm. "It's easier to interact with other magibeans if I keep myself on my toes. Easier to not get hurt if I shrug it off and carry on."
"Armour."
"Yeah. Speaking of…sorry about yours. It’s covered in Jacqueline gobber. I can buff it out."
Dite laughed. "It’s okay! Really," she said, squishing the sprite's shoulders in a very feathery side hug. "Thank you for telling me. I know you said you have Bernard, but if you ever want a change of pace, you can come to me, if you'd like."
"…would I get hugs like this?"
"Oh my gods absoLUTELY! I love hugs! And you seem like you need them."
Jacqueline snorted, snot going flying. "Oh, that was gross! Ew! Sorry!"
Dite laughed. "Snots happen."
"Thank you for asking," Jacqueline said, adjusting herself to sit more comfortably alongside Dite.
"Thank you for telling."
"Thank you for listening."
"Always."

So what, the trailblazer is the product of the weird ass polycule that is the Stellaron Hunters (minus Elio because he is a cat)?
Or
Destiny is not predetermined?
Because Kafka answered no to the question if destiny is predetermined, even though she has constantly asssured that. Even that was confirmed throughout the quest, ignoring the alternative ending. So I thought that made the trailblazer genetically being a quater her, and then a quarter of the rest of the stellaron hunters true. Yet I see people saying that one was obviously the lie, so that means she was telling the truth when she said destiny is not predetermined.
Just in general though, I thought her first answer was the lie at first until the second question was answered.
(Elio being a cat was a joke)

oops bought myself a present oops
Tumblr media
haha jokes I actually bought myself two presents. the other is also a wildflower guide but specific to my region and GUESS WHAT? neither book is organized by blossom color! hurrah! it’s shocking how hard that is to find. like you’d think even hobbyist wildflower enjoyers would want to know how to identify things when they’re not in bloom or want to see pictures that show other parts of the plant just to help them be sure. I have scoured a bunch of bookstores in my town, stymied by this problem (and not wanting to buy online because I want to flip through the pages and really see what info the book provides), and today was my lucky day. both are old editions so it’s possible that nomenclature and taxonomy things have changed but I think with these plus the native plant flashcards I got last year I will be all set. or... set-ish. there is always room on the shelf for another plant book.
also got the one straw revolution from the library, pretty excited to read that too.
has this blog devolved (evolved?) into an ode to books? not mad.
