Memorial Day is close upon us, bringing waves of tourists from all over the world to the Jersey Shore. The season interjects such a range of obstacles, conflicts, and indignities into beachgoing that many of us residents never go near the ocean all summer long. To stew in bumper-to-bumper traffic, battle for a parking space miles from sight of the water, lug heavy beach gear for blocks to the crowded beach entrance, fork over five bucks to a sullen teenager in exchange for a one-day-only beach badge, then roast in the sun while drunk'n'disorderly twentysomethings from "up north" play out their Beachtowel Named Desire dramas at maximum speed and volume as far as the eye can see.... thanks, but I'll just wait until after Labor Day.

What if we could have the beach in a bottle instead? Silly question-- we'd rather have the real thing, preferably all to ourselves, with no other soul in sight except the seagulls. But if a virtual beach is better than no beach at all, James Heeley's Sel Marin makes a convenient substitute for land-locked shoredwellers.

The hologram is a little wobbly and thin in places, but all the requisite elements of a beach experience are here. Lemon and bergamot provide your daily RDA of sunlight, while salt and vetiver contribute a natural ozonic shimmer that veers close enough to sea air to evoke a pleasurable startle response. For interest and surprise, a touch of birch essence wedded to a low-key cedar drydown proves reminiscent of a clean wooden boardwalk (sorry, Seaside Heights).

But what really makes Sel Marin special is the algae. That's right: the slimy green stuff. More than sand, salt, or (god help us) low tide, algae lends the touch of biological reality that defines the littoral bouquet. Heeley's inclusion of algae extract in this composition is at once novel, logical, and appealing, transforming what could have been a run-of-the-mill seashore cliche into a feat of parfum vérité.

This natural approach is a departure from the usual "fresh marine" genre, which largely depends on calone for its oceanic effects. Calone is a fearsomely powerful synthetic which broadcasts a cool, silvery aquatic accord for light years around. It's utterly linear, deathlessly persistent, and pitched at a frequency capable of making dogs howl. I generally go out of my way to avoid it, both in the bottle and on other people-- so when I heard that Sel Marin achieved organic salinity with no calone, I jumped for joy.

Unfortunately, I was not airborne for long... and neither was Sel Marin. What it gained in authenticity by eschewing a chemical boost, it lost in radiance-- dying down to a dim mumble after only ten minutes.

Here, I find, is where Sel Marin most faithfully parallels reality. I know firsthand how it is to live "at the shore" yet never see the beach, to fill my lungs every day with salubrious salt air but never be able to get close to its source. Sel Marin is a true-to-life breath of wind from a salty emerald sea-- experienced as a sadly diminished allusion from far, far inland. Whatever beach Heeley modeled it on must be paradise-- I simply can't see it from where I live.

I understand what Sel Marin is reaching for, and what it comes just short of achieving. Initially I felt that it might trump L'Eau Serge Lutens in the "fresh" department, but actually, it's the other way around. Calone may make me wince, but I almost found myself wishing for a drop -- just a drop -- to fill in the missing puzzle piece.

The good news is that Sel Marin's seaweed-and-salt accord has a curious 'Iceland spar' effect on other perfumes, whereby it refracts and magnifies scents layered underneath to double their impact. I tried it with a touch of Etro's Vicolo Fiori, and boy, did those flowers pop! A pairing with the aforementioned L'Eau Serge Lutens also produced some interesting ripples. I'm planning on layering it with just the barest trace of Hugo Boss Pure to see if its sweet music is enough to tame that savage beast.

And if it fails? At the very least, I'll still end up with a fragrance that sends the tourists packing... and clears the beach just for me.

Provençal Pork Chops

Whether your grill them on the barbie or on a griddle pan, these fragrant and juicy Provençal Pork Chops bring a taste of Summer holiday to your lunch! Happy Sunday!

Ingredients (serves 3):

1/4 teaspoon fleur de sel or sea salt flakes

1/4 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper

1 heaped teaspoon Herbes de Provence 

1/2 teaspoon paprika

1/4 teaspoon ground chilli

3 tablespoons olive oil

3 pork chops

In a large, shallow dish, combine fleur de sel, black pepper, Herbes de Provence, paprika and ground chilli. Drizzle in olive oil and give a good stir until well-combined.

Add pork chops to the dish, rubbing them thoroughly in the oil and spices.

Place in the refrigerator to marinate, at least a couple of hours to overnight.

Grill marinated pork chops, on a hot griddle pan or on the barbecue, until well-browned and cooked through.

Serve Provençal Pork Chops hot, with Aïoli and Poêlée Provençale.

Hi little robins, this is pt.2 of "What do ikevil suitors smell like?". I've included the three new babies villains, the Vogel boys. Eventhough we don't know much about them, I couldn't resist including them here, because I already love those sillies. Soooo, enjoy, my dears!!! Btw, just like in pt.1, I tried to put the same amount of perfumes on each boy, except for Elbie, our greedy boy.

A melancholic, porcelain-doll-looking nobleman. Our Ethereal Prince. My Greedy Boy. As beautiful as a work of art. He has a little maniacal obsession with collecting the most beautiful things in the world, just for himself, that's why he has so many perfumes, he can't decide which one he likes the most, so he keeps buying new fragrances. "I want. I want. I want… If only I could find it, then surely..." Love, let me hold your hand while telling you this: you are the mot beautiful thing in the world. His ocean-blue eyes and long, fluttering lashes hold such a sorrowful gaze. If it weren't because of his curse, he could perfectly be part of ikemen prince, you can't change my mind. I love Elbie, and I can't wait to play his route over and over again. He reminds me of a rain-soaked garden with a gazebo full of roses in the middle. He reminds me of a nostalgic walk along a solitary beach at dusk. He reminds me of a magical forest bathed in silver moonlight. He definitely smells clean, soft, and ethereal, with perhaps some citrusy notes blended with salty-marine hints that reflect his love for beach walks.

Lemme shut ya up.” OMG he even speaks like Silvio. Pretty sure he's kinky af, he may be into chains or something similar. "He's earned himself many enemies" Nah, really? I would've never guessed, not with that golden retriever personality of his. "He always fulfills his promises and expects the same of others, holding a special one close to his festering heart." You see? He has a heart, allegedly. Anyways, we're here to talk about scents, aren't we? I feel like he smells like tobacco and liqueur, I'm 100% sure. And, I don't know why, I can sense some kind of smell that reminds me of sylvester bushes and a really old library, full of dust. Of course, we can't forget that he has money *cough, cough, Silvio, cough*, so he also needs a really expensive scent. He probably doesn't have a favourite perfume, because he slays at layering them and creating new scents that combine with his radiant and bubbly personality.

The little sunshine oddball filled with happiness and joy. Have you seen those cute little curls in his hair? *OMG he's so fluffy I'm gonna dieeee.* He wants to reveal the happiest moments of other people’s lives (and then kill them). He really has a peculiar obsession (another impulsive maniacal wow, such a surprise hahan't.) for the "happiest moment" in others' lives and his own definition of "love" he's striving to prove (Alexa, play "Safer" by Tyla). “Tell me, how happy are you right now…?” If I tell you I'm depressed will you let me live?. Crown's youngest member and Jude's assistant (I don't even know what to think anymore, poor Ellis or poor Jude?). Anyways, as the mentally ill person that I am, I'll patiently wait for his route release. Back to the scents, he loves crispy baguettes and raspberry jam. I feel like he smells like a twisted picnic in a forest at dusk, with pink roses, fresh bread and berries. Clean, but with earthy and woody hints. Since he is such a people pleaser, he doesn't have a favourite perfume, he's just going to wear whatever you like the most, even if it's nothing, even if it's gasoline.

The so called Untrustworthy Cruel Angel, or what I prefer, Chevalier and Gilbert's love child. He truly looks as beautiful and ethereal as an angel, but so did Lucifer, and he ended up ruling Hell, so... we'll have to wait to see him in action... According to Victor in his Vicpedia "Is he an angel or a devil? You’ll have to find out for yourself." “Hello cursed people and everyone else. Won’t you join me in building a wonderful world?” Vlad, is that you? The angelic head of the German empire’s direct organisation, “Vogel”. Referencing Victor on his Vicpedia, "Though he looks like an angel, there’s a strong scent of evil coming from him." So, translated to scents, what does that exactly smells like? Based on what we know, which is not much, if not nothing, I will say that his scent matches his appearance, so maybe a really light, soft, airy and beautiful opening, with white flowers and white musk, very angelic-like, with a "punch" of something much more obscure beneath the surface, maybe some spices, sweet liqueurs and dark woods. All that in a winter-like scenery, very cold, like a breath on top of a glacier.

Just like Jude is the villanous version of Silvio from ikeprince, I feel like Nica is Nokto's doppelganger in ikevillains. A frivolous and cunning person who plays with love. He gives me foxy vibes, but in a darker and colder way. He's referred to as "Vogel’s brain" and seems to have a knack for manipulation and has an eye for money and power. “Guten Tag, cute robin. I want you to be my toy", yep, we have yet another fox. He's a bookworm, but, apparently, is just so he can gain more and more knowledge so he can play with you all. In the official information given directly by Cybird, it says that Nica resents shows of affection, but he still plays with you like a toy. Doesn't that sounds like he's desperate for someone loving him? "He resents love because he has never been given some." Again, this are just assumptions based on what we know and the vibes that I get from him. In conclusion, beneath that foxy-like appearance, I feel like he may have a huge heart of gold that he is too afraid to share. If I had to translate that vibe into a scent, it would probably be something seductive but fresh and sweet at the same time, something more "wild" like a fox playing in a field, but with a cooler vibe, maybe between winter and spring.

The love of my life pt. I already lost the count. The cute Vogel's guard dog. Dariu's puppet and Licht's doppelganger.  "This younger twin suffers from blushing easily" Victor please stop, I can't take it anymore. “If you don’t want your life to be taken, don’t get in the way of us, Vogel.” Okay cute puppy, whatever you say. From what we know, Ring seems cold when you first approach him, but he will be on his knees at the minimum show of affection towards him. So, if you play with his heart, you'll not only have Nica going for you, I'll be there too. Based on the information that Cybird has given us, he seems to be shy and cold, since one of his hobbies is "being in the corner of a room", still, it's not like he is an antisocial, we can guess that because the thing that he resents the most is "eating alone". The other hobby that he has is "taking a nap while looking at the sky" this tells me that he prefers quiet places where he can feel at peace, and somehow it also gives me the vibes of a dreamer, since "looking at the sky" is kind of poetic and it can symbolise freedom, if you know what I mean. In his skills he mixes two aspects that seem quite radical, combat skills and martial arts, along with a really good relationship with animals and an understanding of plants and flowers. When I say radical, in this case, I mean it's that one thing is "agressive" and "tough" while the other is so much more "soft" and "light energy". That aspect of dichotomy or duality is the most important characteristic of Ring, and it needs to be reflected on his scent.

And here it ends the "What do ___ suitors smell like?" Ikemen Villains edition. I hope you have enjoyed reading this as mucha as I have enjoyed writing it. You've probably noticed that the ikevil version of these series is pretty much less humorous than the ikeprince version. I think it is mainly because, eventhough both games characters are so well written and have a lot of traumas and issues, I still think that Ikemen Villains is the darkest one, and so, the one with less humorous content. And also, I tried to understand each character, that's why the character's descriptions are so long, sorry for that hehe. Anyways, thanks for your attention and love!!! Btw, I will probably continue doing this with ikevamp and maybe, maybe, ikesen, but it will take some time, there are a lot of characters in those game series.

marin had always been told he lingered far too close to the shore, but he'd also always hated being limited. they always lived by what humans did, what they saw -- never by their own rules. so, he daringly went to the shore every night to lounge on the rough rocks and stare at the stars and distant lights of human civilisation. no one had ever seen him -- and he'd never seen anyone else. well, until he felt something sharp plunge into his flesh. he tried to fight back, but his body grew heavy and tired so quickly that it was helpless. when he came to, he woke with a start -- splashing the water as he tried to assess just where in the world he was and what happened. when his eyes landed on human, he felt both fear and anger. he clenched his jaw, questioning whether he should even give the other an answer. "take me back," he said, voice stern despite the nerves making him feel sick. he'd heard horror stories of what humans did to the merfolk -- not that he believed them before now.

BVLGARI AQVA MARINE… hear me out.. it’s for men 😭 BUT GIRL look what it has… I LIKE THIS ONE CAUSE WHEN I SMELLED IT ONCE IT HAD A NICE SALTY SEAWEED VIBE LIKE SMELL and our girl is called seaweed brain 🥹 and look at the bottle … it kinda matches her eyes

Heeley's Sel Marin (unisex) Okay so this one is nice it def got a salt water smell almost like you walking on the beach when it’s sunny and you kinda smell the saltiness the ocean has to offer when walking near the ocean and it does have a seaweed funk to it not as much but it’s there.

Tom Ford Oud Minerale (unisex fragrance) Okay so here is this one… I go shopping for perfume/ cologne a lot so I have smelled this one recently, so I add the description if you wanna read it, if I remember this one does capture the fragrance of the ocean but it does have a bit of “fresh water” but it’s a bit brackish (so it’s between fresh and seawater) so it’s does capture the sea heavily almost like when you go walking during the night and the breeze is blowing in the air and you can smell the ocean a bit more than the day ( that how I see it)

Armani Privé - Bleu Lazuli Okay so this is not like beach or ocean but it does have nice smell (the description explains it nicely ) I know of this one cause I used to buy it 😭😭 the design is so pretty and it match daddyseidon aesthetic too 😭 # bias

Jo Malone Wood Sage and Sea Salt (Unisex) So this one is nicceee I put this cause it says salty in the description but tbh it leans toward freshie and it captures the smell of the ocean quiet nicely but it’s a little woodsy tho and it made me think of her daddy cause of this chapter where Anubis said she got her dad scent all over her (isn’t the mf scenting her or something???). So it made think how they may smell alike but people can smell her dad’s scent so that’s where the woodsy comes in to tell their scents apart.

Sea of Gray

I honesty came across this one when doing my research and the description seems on point for you tbh I haven’t smelled it but what it says sounds like it may be but if has that ocean like feel I am not sure … also the first website I clicked said it cost $22 which is cheap if Percy ever wants to buy it compare to the rest of them 😭 this I couldn’t add the description but you can search them up

Anyway you can see that even tho they have a salty/ fresh water based to some they always have an extra thing added like spice or vanilla so don’t think toooo much on it. Cause even these things aren’t 100% close to smelling like the actual sea. But hopefully the description of them can help you!!

C’est tout simplement inconcevable que nos âmes se soit unit pour finalement se détacher froidement. Comme l’eau de mer et le sable, nous ne faisions qu’un, et j’ai la vague à l’âme, un océan d’émotion, même si cela fait longtemps que tu as quitté le rivage, on ne sépare pas le sel et le sable, ils constituent l’équilibre marin, et nous deux c’était réel, ça n’était pas rien.

Salade de burrata printanière au melon et prosciutto

Ingrédients

1/2 livre de burrata fraîche

1/2 lb de cantaloup, coupé en croissants

1/4 livre de prosciutto

2 tomates anciennes, tranchées finement en rondelles

quelques figues fraîches coupées en deux ou des tranches de pêche

une poignée de basilic frais, grossièrement déchiré

Huile d'olive vierge extra 

vinaigre balsamique

Pour assembler la salade, placez les rondelles de burrata sur le plateau, soit une seule au centre, soit autour du plateau selon le nombre de rondelles dont vous disposez.

À l’aide de vos mains, enveloppez chaque quartier du melon au centre avec une bande de prosciutto.

Alternez en superposant les tranches de tomates et les tranches de cantaloup autour de la burrata.

Rentrez les tranches de figues ou de pêches dans les espaces restants.

Saupoudrer le dessus de basilic frais.

Ajoutez un bon verre d’huile d’olive extra vierge et un peu de vinaigre balsamique.

Personal ideas for simple devotional acts to Njörðr

Let us all praise the Lord of Ships, the Vanir King. He is the bestower of wealth and the guardian of seas, and his gifts are many! If you’re looking to start working with Njörðr, or worshipping him, these ideas make for quick and simple gestures that showcase your interest. They’re also perfect for a pagan who already maintains a close relationship with the sea, water spirits, or a sea deity. After all, spiritual practice gets hard to sustain when you’re working on a tight schedule! Which is why I hope these little personal ideas can inspire even those of you who already actively worship/work with Njörðr. 

First things first: pondering on what Njörðr stands for, what you think he can bring your life and what you think he would appreciate in return. 

Going for walks on windy days. Njörðr is said to raise winds that are favorable to sailboats! 

Cooking and eating sea products, especially if you can find them fresh! I usually keep an eye out for fishermen’s markets. It’s a good idea to buy locally if the opportunity presents itself. The most important thing is to make sure you’re buying from sustainable fish farming companies, especially if you’re at a restaurant or buying from a grocery store.

Putting the sound of waves as background music before sleep. You can visualize the sea, or the ocean, and use this image to connect with Njörðr either by simply meditating on him and his gifts, or even by praying to him.

If possible, spending time near bodies of water: water is a network which connects the land to the ocean. In the end, all rivers, no matter how small, are bound to the ocean. 

Watching documentaries on the sea, or on marine life! The simple gesture of learning about his domain, developing your understanding of it, can make you feel that much closer to the Father of Light-Bringers. 

Whenever you’re at a local beach, collecting seashells or rocks which catch your eye! They’re a way to bring a piece of the sea home with you! 

Since I cook a lot, there’s this little habit I’ve come to develop, of adding a pinch of sea salt (or fleur de sel) to every recipe. Of course, I won’t do this if I’m cooking a simple sandwich for myself: I’m talking about large pots of soup, meat pies, stews, etc. It’s a way of reminding myself that the Vanir bring about the fertility which allows us sustain ourselves. 

Learning sea shanties!!! Did you smile? That’s because sea shanties are fun, and what better way to honor a God than by having fun in their name! One of my favorite songs ever is a folk ballad about an old woman who begs her husband to leave the city and go back to the island where they used to live, where she could watch the seagulls and where he would fish their dinner. Songs such as these can make for beautiful and deeply personal offerings. Once you’ve learned a fisherman’s song, you’ll find yourself humming it in your day-to-day, and thinking of Njörðr as you’re doing so.

Making offerings of coin to him. I’ve heard that he was particularly fond of the coin-shaped chocolates that are wrapped in gold foil! Generally, anything that is made of gold or silver makes for a beautiful offering to him. You can, of course, keep such objects after offering them! The act of sharing them with Njörðr is symbolic, as are many offerings, and you are as entitled to keeping these valuables as you are to drinking offering alcohol after the ritual is done. Placing your silver/gold object on a windowsill or an altar for a day, a week or a month is enough to act as an offering.  

When it comes to the Vanir, you usually can’t go wrong with buying local products! What does your area specialize in, in terms of food? Now that summer’s at our door, we’ve reached the perfect time to look into local farmer’s markets. If, like me, you’re in the habit of offering alcohol to some or most of your deities, local draft beer is a great idea for Njörðr. In my area, grocery shops sometimes sell this one beer that’s made using salt water! It’s my go-to for Njörðr, understandably.

Acting generously, taking opportunities to share with others! It’s a way of honoring and embodying the Vanir King’s own benevolence.

As a follow-up, working on your ability to be compassionate: putting yourself in somebody else’s shoes, forgiving a wrong that has been done to you, finding compromise during a conflict with loved ones... If you are put in a position of leadership, lead others with care and attentiveness. Njörðr’s mythological son Freyr is heavily associated with peace. By protecting peace, you are honoring them both. 

Keeping a symbol of his on you as an amulet: representations of fish, anchors, lighthouses, ships, or anything else that symbolizes the sea all make for beautiful reminders of Njörðr’s presence. Especially if they are silver or gold-colored! In fact, a simple silver or gold coin, or even just a coin with special meaning in your heart, is the perfect amulet to keep in your wallet/purse in his honor. 

Learning to tie knots, or any other simple skill that is useful on a boat is fun and a great way to feel connected with the sea. This goes without saying but if you’ve got the chance to go for a boat ride, take it in his honor!

Asking him to grant you a safe journey before traveling long distances.

Chaudrée Crémeuse aux Fruits de Mer

Une chaudrée onctueuse et savoureuse, idéale pour un repas réconfortant aux saveurs marines !

Ingrédients :

500 g de fruits de mer mélangés (crevettes, pétoncles, moules...)

1 oignon

2 pommes de terre

500 ml de bouillon de poisson

200 ml de crème fraîche

2 cuillères à soupe de farine

2 cuillères à soupe de beurre

Sel, poivre

Persil haché

Instructions :

Préparation de l'oignon :

Émincez l'oignon et faites-le revenir dans une casserole avec le beurre jusqu'à ce qu'il soit translucide.

Cuisson des fruits de mer :

Ajoutez les fruits de mer dans la casserole et faites-les revenir quelques minutes, jusqu'à ce qu'ils commencent à cuire.

Ajout de la farine :

Saupoudrez de farine et mélangez bien pour enrober les fruits de mer.

Ajout du bouillon et des pommes de terre :

Versez le bouillon de poisson et ajoutez les pommes de terre coupées en dés. Laissez mijoter à feu doux environ 20 minutes, jusqu'à ce que les pommes de terre soient tendres.

Ajout de la crème et des assaisonnements :

Incorporez la crème fraîche, le sel, le poivre et le persil haché. Mélangez bien.

Épaississement :

Laissez mijoter encore quelques minutes pour que la chaudrée épaississe légèrement.

Service :

Servez chaud avec du pain grillé pour accompagner.

Temps de préparation : 20 minutes

Temps total : 50 minutes
