— Muchas gracias, Seiya... —le respondió, posando su mano sobre la de él. Sus miradas se conectaron durante unos segundos antes de que él se acercara lentamente a ella.

Por más que me gustaría ir e interrumpir ese pequeño momento, exclamando que lo que acabo de presenciar es el más grave delito que un Caballero puede cometer, simplemente no me es posible. De hecho, creo que ni siquiera yo me veo haciéndolo.

"¿Por qué?" Se han de preguntar. La respuesta es muy sencilla: Para mí que tuve la oportunidad de convivir con ellos desde pequeño... sin yo estar realmente bajo las órdenes de Athena, como lo estuvo mi Maestro, esto es lo más natural del mundo, por más loco que pueda sonar.

¿Es mi obligación recordarles en dónde están y quiénes son? Tal vez es probable que, como Caballero Dorado de Athena que vela por una de las 12 casas, y como discípulo de mi Maestro, ver que las condiciones que nuestra misma Diosa impuso se cumplan sea una de mis tantas tareas como su Santo.

Pero como vuelvo a repetir, ellos no sólo son mi compañero de armas y mi Diosa... son mis amigos de toda la vida, gente que yo aprecio y deseo ver felíz. Y, si dentro de mis posibilidades está, los ayudaré a que de vez en cuando puedan tener momentos como estos, en donde demuestran su doloroso y prohibido amor mediante un sencillo y casto beso que daño no le hace a nadie.

Heyyy! I'm totally new to Tumblr :'( I love to write fanfictions and I decided that the first I' ll write here would be a Athena (from Saint seiya) x non-binary reader =) I will start the story at the beginning of the anime because it's where Athena is the most (in my opinion) implicated.Hope you enjoy!

(In the past : Meeting)

Y/n never was the fighting type of child,their family left them to an orphanage because they couldn't take care of him.They never trusted anyone so when men came to take them to some place they didn't know of,they were scared,anxious but didn't show it.When they arrived at a mansion they was suprised.They learned that they was supposed to train to become a knight of Athena,in others terms,get their sign armor and to bring back to them.Tatsumi the butler of the mansion was violent but he never touch or say anything to Y/n.Saori Kido was the adopted granddaughter of the owner of the mansion,she was a beautiful girl even if she was spoiled rotten.She was the first kid they met and they both grew fond of each other quickly.Because of that,Tatsumi never dared to hurt Y/n.

(Time skip : Training)

(I choose France because it's my country even if another kid in the anime went there)

Tatsumi was calling each kid to come and pick in the box with a country name wich was going to be where they would officially train to be a knight of Athena.Tatsumi call seiya,a brown haired boy with a rather tan skin,in other words,a trouble maker but for some reason Saori seemed to appreciate him even tho she don't talk to him.He got Greece.Then Y/n was called,they went to the box and slide their hand in the box,taking the first paper they touched.Taking out their hand and opening the folded paper,they read out loud "France".They go back into the little group of kids whose still waiting their turn.Saori quickly grab their arm and drag them to her private garden not letting the butler say anything.Once arrived,Saori hugged Y/n with all the strength in her arms(not a lot to be honest).They hugged back and gently pet her back as she started crying into their shoulder.They expected this reaction.They spent the rest of the day together til' it was time to go for Y/n.

(time skip : The return)

After years of training,it was time for Y/n to return to Japan.They didn't really changed throughout the years aside from their being more sculpted.They got the armor of (sign name) without difficulty.Once arrived in japan they walked all the way to the mansion in silence admiring the landscapes that they almost forgot after being away for so long.Y/n didn't expect that as soon as arrived at the mansion they would have to stop a fight.When they was in front of the building they immediately saw the doors wide open with Seiya's back(easy to recognize cause of the hair) and Jabu a blond haired kid(as Y/n always saw them as kid because of their behavior).Y/n started to run faster there because they heard them arguing,once close to them they sent both of them on the ground with one quick attack.The (color of hair)ette heard a gasp and turned around but before being able to say anything,two arms wrapped around their waist and was pulled into a tight hug."Welcome back" was the first words Saori said but it was enough to make them feel at home.When Y/n was away they knew that their place was next to Saori,next the girl they trusted the most.

Hello! I was roaming though your Tumblr account and I noticed Saint Seiya, I LOVE Saint Seiya and I was wondering that may I request a Seiya x childhood friend headcanons or Athena x childhood headcanons? Please?

AHHH I just saw this!! I love Saint Seiya, specifically the og knights of the Zodiac. I'll try my best. I hope you like this, it’s my first time doing a request!

Saint Seiya × childhood friend

Seiya would miss you a ton while training in Greece. As soon as he got back from Greece he'd visit you, even before trying to drop off the armor. At first he would be too focused on finding his sister to even notice his feelings for you, much less your feelings for him, but one day it'd click for him. Or more specifically he would find himself bragging talking about you with the rest of the team. Then one of them (probably Hyoga) would snap at him and tell Seiya to just shut up and ask you out or he would. Then Seiya would probably get defensive and ask you out.

You'd have to be really patient with him. Seiya would drag you around every once in a while forgetting that not everyone spent their childhood training.

He would absolutely show you off to his team. He'd brag about how perfect you were. He'd invite you to any training session.

Seiya would most definitely show off in front of you. He'd invite you to his matches and brag about how capable he was. Yes, he's half dead after the match with Shiryu but as soon as he sees you, he gives the biggest smile.

After Ikki's first attack he would be extremely scared for you. He'd probably want you to move in with him or near him. At least temporarily, he'd want to keep watch over you.

Remember when I said, you'd need patience with Seiya. Yeah you would probably be a saint yourself to put up with him. This man's a mess but we love him. He wouldn't be at home too often yet he'd always manage to leave a pile of dirty clothes.

Despite his inability to keep his place clean, he is a wonderful cook. Whenever he would be at home he'd cook meals for you. He's an early riser, it's a habit he got in Greece. If he woke up before you he'd bring you breakfast in bed.

Seiya has nightmares. They don't happen often but when they do, he let out a scream that could wake even the neighbors. Moments like that you would have to wake him. He never wants to talk about the nightmare. He barely wants to talk at all. You'd probably rake your fingers through his hair. You would tell him stories of your past together. Eventually Seiya would start to talk, he'd tell you more stories of his sister. He'd confide in you about how sometimes he was afraid he wouldn't remember her eventually.

Once he did reunite with his sister, he’d be ready to reintroduce you two. Seiya would be over the moon, the two people he loves the most get along and are with him.

He alternates between big and little spoon (he prefers little spoon but he’d ever say it). When he’s big spoon, he feels like he has the world in his arms. While he loves being little spoon, it causes him trouble to let his guard down, he’s used to being on high alert. After he does manage to calm down, he’s a cuddly cat, he’d practically burrow into your chest. The two of you would stay together in that position for hours. He likes it when you run your fingers through his hair and rub his back. He’d be half asleep and notice that you stopped and whine until you continue again. :3

You were Saori's first real friend. Yeah, the knights were there but they didn't really get along with her at first, you've always been the closest. As such you're extremely special to her.

If you ever need help whether it's with money troubles or just personal things, she's there for you. Need help finding a job? A partner company of hers mysteriously received your resume and you hear from them. Need help with a subject in school? She will personally tutor you.

She's smart. So smart. But also so so stupid. She would have no idea that she likes you. She'd know that you were special to her but she wouldn't be able to explain why. You'd have to be the first to confess and at first she'd be like "of course I like you." "No Saori, I like you." "Ohh"

Once you two do start dating she would be a bit stiff. She'd worry about doing things properly. Does she need to court you? Do you need to court her? Is everything going to change? No Saori, everything is not going to change, you’ve always been friends and that won’t change, there’s just more romance.

 After she calms down, she’d totally spoil you. Roses whenever you meet, books when you need them, little trinkets and bracelets. If she travels she’d always bring souvenirs. 

If you took her to meet your parents she’d be the ideal partner. She’d take you to the planetarium and talk about her grandfather, the only paternal figure she knew. It would be one of the few times you’d see her cry.

How did you find out about Saint Seiya? 

My friends were talking about it one day and I got interested, so one of them let me borrow his manga volumes. I I got really invested as a teen when I watched the Hades Saga.

Who´s your favorite character and why? 

Seiya. I liked his growth in the manga, and the other works in the series really add a lot to his character. No to mention, that after so many years roleplaying him he has really grown on me.  I specially like his LoS version!

Who´s your absolute hate-character and why? 

Don’t really have one.

Shippings you like and why you ship them? 

I used to like Seiya x Saori only platonically, but with Omega and LoS I started to really like them as a couple. To name a few others I really like, Sorento x Julian x Thetis; Shiryu x Seiya; Milo x Camus; Mu x Aldebaran and Pandora x Rhadamanthys (Mostly for the Lost Canvas).

Your favorite season / sequel:

Hades. I love the overall aesthetics, the vibe and the overall progression. It’s also the most well adapted arc, from a story perspective, even if the animation is not very good (to say the least). Sanctuary had the most emotional/exciting battles, though.

Legend of Sanctuary is one of my favorite Saint Seiya stories and it’s a little sad to think that there will never be a second movie. It had so much potential!

- Shun x Hyoga (what happens in the Libra Temple stays in the Libra Temple) - Hyoga x Isaak (but only because I have this weird headcanon of Hyoga having a crush on him because he reminds him of Shun)

Seiya x Saori: School AU

Seiya was a student at Graude Martial Arts School. As an orphan, his dream was to be reunited with his sister Seika again. During a field trip to Athens, he discovered an abandoned urn. After rubbing it, a girl of his age appeared before him. She introduced herself as Goddess Athena, telling him that it was Hades who trapped her in the urn and how he had freed her. Seiya thought that he is dreaming. He bid the goddess goodbye and rejoined his friends.

After returning to Japan, he surprisingly discovered that the Goddess had followed him when he found the urn in his dorm room. Goddess Athena explained to him that she wants to repay him for liberating her after being trapped in the urn for hundred of years. Immediately, Seiya told her that his #1 wish is to see his sister again. Goddess Athena laughed that she isn’t a “genie”; but she agreed to help Seiya graduating as #1 student of the class. 

With her power, Goddess Athena healed his wounds; repaired (and enhanced) his uniforms; altered the weather to his advantage; changed the days of the week to give him longer breaks. Not agreeing with all Athena’s method, Seiya argued with her from time to time. Soon, everyone began to raise an eyebrow about Seiya. They found his miraculous recovery from his injuries sustained from training and fighting match strange; some even heard him “talking” to someone in his room - yet he supposed to be living alone.

To find out what’s going on, his mentor Marin and the school master Mitusmasa Kido had another student Shun moved into his dorm room. Shun noticed that Seiya is very attentive to an urn. Seiya explained that it was passed down from his family by generations. One day, when Seiya wasn’t there, Shun was playing with the urn and accidentally released Athena by rubbing it. After seeing Athena, Shun passed out. 

Knowing Seiya’s secret, Shun agreed not to reveal it to anyone out of his good heart. At the same time, he made Athena agreed not to her power to assist Seiya in fighting matches. Though Athena agreed, she continued to use her power to make Seiya’s life better and easier; in turn Seiya and Shun had to come up with explanations on how some miraculous things happened. 

In a match where Seiya was fighting against Shiyru, both were down and near death. Shun ran to release Athena and told her what happened. Athena replied that she can’t do anything because she had given him her word. Shun begged her saying that it is an emergency. Athena explained that if she were to break her words, then she’d lose her powers. In despair, Shun ran back to the arena and found doctors declaring Seiya and Shiryu dead. Yet within seconds, Seiya was back alive again. Shun saw Athena not far away, waving him goodbye before disappearing. 

After the match, Shun told Seiya what happened. Seiya rushed back to his dorm room and found the urn gone. Saddened by Athena’s departure, Seiya realized that he had developed feelings for her. He made a wish under the constellation of Pegasus to be reunited with her again.

The next morning, everyone was talking about a new student joining the school. When headmaster Mitusmasa Kido introduced his granddaughter Saori Kido, Seiya found her looking exactly like Goddess Athena. Mitsumasa Kido explained that Saori had been trained in ballet school in Greece. He asked if Seiya can show Saori around. Seiya smiled and agreed.

LABYRINTH FANFICS

A Forfeit of Dreams, by KL Morgan

There are many books and scripts that are nowhere near as good as this Labyrinth fan-sequel. It is remarkably the only example that doesn’t contain absolutely none of the most common fanfic’s mistakes: The dialogues are believable, the characters aren’t OOC, there is fantasy, excitement, heartbreak and most of all, romance. Once you start reading it, you can’t do anything else until you finish.

Erlkönig, by Subtilior

The writing is just as outstanding as in a Forfeit of Dreams, but it gains the second place because it doesn’t try to stay attached to the original material, meaning it’s version of Jareth is much more scary and evil then the original one. If on one hand it wouldn’t work for a sequence because of this, on the other it allows a much more adult alternative universe. The thriller will make your skin crawl, the smut will probably ruin your sexual life, and, like in a Forfeit of Dreams, you won’t be able to stop it until you’ve finish it.

STAR WARS FANFIC

The Sith & the Senator, by Writtin In Stone

An Anidala AU which doesn’t require previously shipping Anidala from the Star wars Prequels to read it. It completely rewrites Anakin and Padme’s characters and their romance to a better version. Here they are bad-asses leaders fighting on opposites sides from the beginning, but Padmé doesn’t know that, which gives time for Anakin to feel her out and accidentally find in her what she finds in him: a soul-mate. The only problem is that what you would expect from this is her eventual discovery of Anakin’s nature and their breakdown as enemies who still love each other in the war which has been fermented from the start by the Sith Lord. But, after Padme’s conversation with her mother in chapter 22, the author makes it clear this won’t diverge from the common story of the regular couple trying to solve their problems in a everyday way and that the potential for star-crossed lovers in a war context is gonna be wasted. So just stop reading it before it gets bad and just do as I do: Picture as their battleships are in front of each other and they are looking through the glass towards the space outside, as if they could see one another. And Anakin is trying to telepathically reach her, trying to convince her to give up, to not force his hand, but she is just as determined as he is. Every time I think about how this story could have been, this song comes to my mind: We’ve come to far / to give up / who we are. Then I picture a private confrontation and they can’t hold back anymore and allow themselves to love each other for the last time, knowing fully aware that, by the morning, they will be foes again, trying to at least keep that moment. So inevitable, so all-consuming, aff.

The most unique thing about this one is the palpable unresolved sexual tension.

GORMENGHAST FANFICS

All the ones written by Thyme In Her Eyes. Try to picture being the only crew-member of a ship as far as you known. Try to imagine you have become so committed to the love story it literally has ruined days of your life and there is no fanart, no playlist, and no one related to it with who you can speak about it. Then you find a few fanfics and you already know that you will cry of joy even if they are a C, because it’s already a miracle they exist. Then you read them and you realize this is the best author you ever read per amount of quality fanfics produced and you know there is a God favoring those most in need.

These by Hobbity and Edmondia Dantes Redux are pretty nice as well.

RED EYE FANFIC

Crossing the Line, by A Pisces Alone

Read only until chapter 9. After that, it stops being a prequel and gives Stockholm Syndrome to Lisa, which is never my thing unless the girl drops out of it very quickly. But, yeah, is a prequel to the movie from Jackson’s POV as he stalks and unconsciously falls in love for his prey. What I like most is the subtlety with which his feelings develop. Nothing is rubbed in the reader’s face, neither it needs to be.

A petyr x catelyn multichapter in my native language, starting at their childhood and reaching the present events. You’re going to discover how easily the author develops spontaneous dialogues and memorable lines. Seriously, if you feed of Petyr’s anguish, you need to read this. Here is the complete drawing of my fan kids Iris and Melanie, whit some pics of the process of making it.

The one with Gemini cloth is Iris the oldest sister for a few minutes, she brave and sometimes reckless too, just like her father she don’t let anyone tell her what she can or not do, in short she is very ready to punch fate in the face.

The one with Athena cloth is Melanie, she is the most calm and collected sister, just like her mother she would be the first person to go face a enemy and offer her life to stop meaningless fights, just like her father she would take te opportunity when her enemy is off guard to stab him in the chest.

Also an update about them is that the official volo for the fan kids now is the oce version of the saints color.

So, I am having a relatively stressful episode at work, I have enough alcohol in my blood to make me feel chatty, and there isn’t nearly as much Saint Seiya talk on my dash as I’d need so here it goes :

Let’s talk about ... well, Seiya

It’s dificult for me to comprehend exactly how many fans of Pegasus Seiya there are around. Often it seems like he is the most hated and the most loved character in the fandom simultaneously. No, seriously, I don’t think even characters that were designed to be hated like Tatsumi or Kasa got as much (and for the latter even Shun said the dude was going way too far)

For my part I plead guilty to the first one; my sympathy for the Pegasus knight only lasted a dozen of episodes. I often joked to my sister how the reason I never watched the anime a second time (despite a habbit of feeding on re-runs of favourite shows instead of new ones) was entirely because I couldn’t stand the idea of watching so many frames of Seiya again.

Nevertheless, I always made it a point never to completely exclude completely him for any headcanoning or writing I made around the universe, especially if it touched Athena and the 5 main bronzes - few are the sound reasons to exclude him from the universe that was nammed after him.

I never say much or write much about him because, despite my irritation with the character, I never wanted to reduce him to being The Clown, or make him the bottom of all sorts of jokes.I may be wierd but even if he is a fictional character I wasn’t going to treat him unfairly ... In general we could say I could never picture him in a way that would make him more appealing to my eyes, as a writer or a fan.

So here in this saturday midnight let me first speak ill of Seiya, and then speak way less ill of him (and if you survive to the end you will find out it really is related to my work, that’s what got me thinking)

The many facettes of Pegasus Seiya and how they made me grow as a writer

(Since this is getting long I figured it needed a title)

If I want to speak ill of Seiya first it is because I am a big fan of riddles. In general I just like to understand the logical connections between everything (you have no idea how satisfied I was the day I found out the anime colours of the gold saints’ hair were chosen to contrast with the overwhelming yellows of their armours. Really it’s just like watching those videos were everything fits perfectly into everything). And I think I did figure out why the “Seiya hate”.

Furthermore, with the exemple of Seiya I started understanding many advice given to beginers about character-building and protagonists. I also hope this first part will illustrate how I always tried to “see the good” in Seiya.

I always thought he was a admirable character - in theory. I believe this is a shared feeling, nobody would dare say Seiya is a poor character absolutely useless to the dynamics of the series.  

(Ok I’m idealising a little. but the least one could say is that the content he generates is usually quite neutral)

Everything he does is heoric : he never gives up, he leads, he defeats enemies 300x bigger than himself, he helps those in need ... Seiya is really good, almost perfect in everyway except for his mischievious side, and worthy of all the praise he gets within the universe - in theory.

But oh god how annoying he was in practice

I wonder how many people reading this have never rolled their eyes during one of those typical “Seiya comes to save the day” moments.

So why ? Why is he annoying so many people ? Or, at least, why is he not inspiring as much as other characters of this series do ? I think I found the solution to that riddle (and I know it to be true for at least me and my sibilings)

Personally, I can easily name the moments Seiya irritated me the most. Disrigarding this one scene in a filler where Seiya makes a sexsit comment, it was in the scenes where he appeared at the last moment to save the day and everybody was cheerfully calling him name. Or how he was always the only one to be able to defeat the “big bosses”. All these scenes irritated me in how they were written to make him look as the big hero and protagonist of the show.

Which, you know. He actually is.

The story relates his steps - check

Does heroic stuff : self-sacrifice, never gives up even if the situations look desperate - check

Is indispensable to the plot : he defeats the big bosses, so yes - check

So why ?

Tying to put more words on this, the following sentence formed into my mind : “It is faked protagonism”.

With hindsight I am affraid Seiya’s character suffered a lot from the fillers of the anime in the same way Saori’s roles in fillers left the wrong impression of “damselle in distress” and Shun as “the crybaby always needing his brother to save him”. The fillers repeated ad nauseum the same formula : “enemy attacks - the bronzes go to fight them - Seiya gets hit on the head a lot - Let’s make him hit on the head three times more to show it has nothing to do with the last enemy they fought - He still miraculously avoids head trauma and defeats everyone and is the only one getting carried in triumph”. As a result, his heroic trait was completely banalizing and we were left us thinking “Does he ever do anything new ?”

Talking to my sibilings and seeing the trends on Tumblr the past years, I believe this feeling has been refrazed a lot as “We want to see x characters instead of Seiya”.

This is the point in this analysis where the wannabe writer in me starts putting her two cents. How come even minor characters seem to be more appealing than Seiya ?

I always did get what kind of traits Kuru wanted to give him. In theory. But in practice, they never seem to manage getting past the screen. Leaving out the glamour the Gold Saints’ name offer, if we compare Seiya to the other Bronzes, even taking only manga canon events one could say he suddenly appears quite pale as a character.

For instance, in the course of the series, Shyiru begins undergoing major character developpment from day one; he who had great pride looses his battle against Seiya.

In the later arcs, he sacrifices his eyesight to save his friends in this beautiful scene, which ensues in another character developpment moment where he learns to fight blind, goes to the big 12 temples battle blind. He is the first to kill a Gold Saint -actually he is the only one to have killed 2 gold saints in this battle- and we are very often reminded he is sacrificing a happy life with Shunrei everytime he goes on mission to save the world.

In a similar way, it is easy to be reminded how Ikki is battling his past everyday, how Hyoga is struggling to build a future everyday, and we could all appreciate Shun’s amazing strength in for instance the battle against Pisces or the beautiful scene of his sacrifice in Hades

Next to this, Seiya just seems to be “beaten around”, an idiot who tags along without bringing much into the group aprat from yelling “Saorii-saaaaaan” untill the osts dry up causing him to rise up and defeat the big boss on the cue of pegasus fantasy. And yet, he still receives all the glory in the narative and is at the center of attention.

The general impression me and my sibilings got was “He is the protagonist just because the series is named after him.” The naration and the fillers seem to have built a house of cards around his punch, which is definitively what irritated me and my sibilings and I am theoretising most of the fandom as well.

Now in his defence, his comedic trait and good contact with people does not have much room in end-of-the-world battles against gods that only address to humans talking down to them, and as mentioned the fillers did not do him any favours. The plot of his lost sister is quite forgotten after the first arc, and unlike other characters it does not seems like he picks up any other defining traits during the course of the series. (Personally, the ultimate strie that just made me loose all patience is the shipping with Saori that Toei has going on)

Which is where I realised : this is probably what everybody means when talking of “insuficient of character developpment”

We often see the words “character develeppment” in critiques or writing tips. Everybody stresses how important for your story it is. But it is only recently, paired with the exemple of Seiya that I have truly realised what this means.

I read somewhere that “If your protagonist becomes perfect, if he is not longer evolving, then he stops being a protagonist”. I think with Seiya I could sense the results of keeping a protagonist that is not longer evolving in the story.

One could also argue he is not sacrificing as much as the others. Like sure, he is ready to sacrifice his life every time, but it also never seems that his life is in any real danger - he only ever ends up in the hospital after the big guy is defeated. He never seems to suffer any consquences of his injuries during the battles - has the narative ever implied he could not throw his punches as well as usual because of his injuries ? He mostly attacks, falls down, can’t move for a few minutes and then gets up again. It is more a narrative of “If you don’t succeed, try harder and harder untill you do”.

Which helped me put in practice another writing advice : do not let your main characters excape the consequences of their actions.

It does not mean everything has to be realistic (of course they can loose way more blood that humanly possible and still survive because it visually increases the dramatic effect). I come to realise it means that if you give too much free passes, the stakes will not feel as high, and your plots will bear much less tension than they potentially could.

Going back to Seiya as much as his actions are heroic in theory, they do not feel heroic to most people watching it probably because his "never giving up and keep punching” attitude does not have consequences. They have as much effect as him getting out the trash : it sure is unpleasant, it smells baad, the trash starts leaking, it’s disgusting, you hears noises inside the trash disposal and nobody wants to know what would thrive in this smelly and juicy environement, but in the end it will be over in a second. You just throw away the bag, maybe you got a bit of trash juice on your shoes but it will easily be washed away by water.

Taking the same problem from a different angle offers the opportunity to look into giving traits to your character :

We can all agree that “never give up and keep punching” was intended to be Seiya’s main trait of character. It seems, however, it did not result to be as memorable or as inspiring as planned. Which reminded me of this other piece of advice :

“If you give your character a trait you consider his most defining characteristic, but never challenge it at any point, this trait is going to have as much effect as a mole on their cheek” - it is now loud and clear to me.

With the exemple of Seiya, I would add variety in the challenges is important, because repetition decreses tension, and less tention also means less investment in one’s story (or the story involving one particular character).

And if repeated to much, it becomes annoyance towards one’s character.

Calling myself out - Time to work on liking Seiya

Now this has gotten so much longer and personal than I ever expected, but after speaking so bad of Seiya I really do not want to leave out the part where I speak good of him. Especially when it involves my favourite kind of riddles with Saint Seiya characters : fill the gaps.

As mentioned before, it was always quite clear what traits Kurumada wanted to give the Pegasus Saint. Let’s start with the most obvious ones:

Mischievious side, implying as well that :

Has a sense of humour

Quite good with people or at least with kids

Rebel/independent side (flashback of Saori ridding Jabu, the begining of the anime)

Never gives up

Is a good leader / is capable of bringing people toghether / of rallying people to his cause

The last ones on the list are quite easy to forget about him, because of the “lack of challenge” discussed earlier (nobody would have ever forgotten about his leader skills if let’s say he had prevented Hyoga from turing over completely to Poseidon to stay with Isaak). In that spirit, I recently came across an idea that would make those two traits more “challenging” and give a more human dimention to his character.

Now the fact he was since always a bit of a rebel has an influence on his leader capacities, as being an independent mind he stands out and will not depend much external factors to go in a direction. But this alone does not make such an unchallenged leader as Seiya.

Now this is where my current employment helped this reflexion :  I work customer service, more precisely a position involving processing and solving issues.

The very first advice I was given during training was “Always sound confident. Even if you understand jack about what the customer is talking about, just sound confident. Make believe that you know your shit even if you are just about to google a crash course on the subject. Because if they even think for a second that you don’t know they will eat you“.

And let me tell you how accurate this advice is. I became the favourite of this Italian lady who always had problems with her printer because I read to her in a very confident voice an article I was reading on the spot after punching out her question in google.

It is not easy, and it really pumps your adrenaline, but it is true : if you sound confident people are going to follow your lead and believe in what you say. Even if you yourself have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

Now today, I was thinking how this could be the secret behind “The Miracle of Seiya”; maybe this is why Seiya is very good at being a leader, and even more, why he is very good at being a leader in the apocalypse fighter army of Athena.

He reassures everybody and gives them hope by making them believe he has 100% confidence in a given situation and that everything is under control, much like I became a printer and Wifi expert in the eyes of that Italian lady even though I actually dread those motherfuckers.

That would totally explain this bit at the Cancer temple too, this scene we all make a little fun of, where is is all “Don’t say that Shiryu ! We must think that we have still 9 hours to save Saori !” and moments later he seems to be ignoring his own advice saying “that’s not a lot” (Could be also something lost in translation tho)

And with this sort of influence on other people, he finally becomes a crucial character to the story, as he becomes the glue to the team without which it is possible the other bronzes would not have been as solid of a team, maybe even disbanding as the challenges they faced seemed often hopeless.

And with that I think I am ready to write something involving Seiya someday ...
