But my mother somehow knew. Knew it was I who was holding up that mirror. She despised me for it. She called a doctor. An "expert". She wanted him to lock me away. To "fix" me.

watching space station videos for fic research and this astronaut is explaining how they sleep and that they dont really lie down because it always feels like shes still standing up anyway. she says "i dont have any sensation in my head that tells me im upside down so it doesnt matter"
i think thats what time sense is like. this thing in your brain that makes you able to orient yourself like in relation to, like, gravity? humans float in time like astronauts float in the space station. theyve got nothing in their brain telling them whats up and down.
and i dont know physics but like gravity distorts time along with space right? thats what they told me in world enough and time right? magic space hole, dont call the lift, cybermen problem
anyway i think thats what it's like. just like feeling gravitys effects on time? and then when it disappears or gets broken, which i hc happens with the master a bit after the timelords take away the drums and then relatively soon after that they regenerate very close to a black hole TWICE. TWICE AT ONCE. i think those things together mustve really fucked with their time sense i dont think the master can orient themself very well anymore, cant tell whats up and down anymore, just always floating

why does William continue insisting that Eliza should just settle down and forget the detective business and STOP undermining him and going against his order and DEFINITELY STOP jumping in the middle of his cases (particularly ones where she's used some unscrupulous means to get in the middle of them), when almost every time she does something incredibly cool (sometimes actually saving his life at the same time), and the camera immediately flashes to his face wherein can be seen a mixture of general annoyance + a very distinct oh snap that's really hot

I think its time to stop telling people to start watching Doctor Who from Christopher Eccleston and instead treat it more like Classic Who (but not exactly the same). Give people some recommendations of episodes that are well liked, and tell new-commers that if they like a particular doctor or era, to watch from the start of that and go back and watch older stuff later. There are 13 series of this show, that's a little intimidating to get into. For people who want to get into an long series, who don't find it intimidating, sure, they should go back and start from series 1. Same goes for if your watching it with another person, like the advice isn't universal.
I just think "don't skip 9" isn't helpful anymore, series 1, as much as I love it, has aged, and the front half of the series is certainly the weaker half, so I wouldn't blame anyone who was turned off by it. And absolutely, if people get into a later era they should go back and watch it, but saying it's the one and only place to start is going to put a lot of people off.
I've loved doctor who for as long as I can remember, and have been watching it as it comes out since series 6 when I was 8 or 9 (I tried the series before but found the next time trailers to scary), but I stopped rewatching from the beginning years ago, I'm much more likely to watch a random episode I haven't seen for a while, or a particular series or Doctor I like. I don't know how universal that is, if most fans still watch the whole thing on rewatches, but if not, why recommend to a first time viewer that they watch in a way die hard fans don't anymore.
We already do this with Classic, every piece of advice you see says to bounce around, and obviously for very different reasons, until recently you couldn't find it all in one place. I don't see why we should do any differently with the new series, sure, there's not nearly as much of it, but the reason to tell people to skip around with classic is because different eras are different enough that not liking one isn't a guarantee you won't like another (for example I'm not a big fan of the fourth doctors era post key to time, but I love three's run (despite three being probably my least favourite doctor)). We ARE at that point with nu-who, we have three very different eras of the show (arguably four as the Moffatt era does change over time) and we aren't taking advantage of that when recommending the show.
Personally, if I were introducing Doctor Who to someone today, I'd stick on my favourite story for each Doctor (9-13), ask them which one they enjoyed the most, and watch from their first episode. (The one exception to this might be Tennant, as there's only one series before Christmas Invasion, and his run relies on the previous Doctors a lot more than most)

So, if anyone has any recommendations for dramas with similar vibes as beyond evil and the devil judge I'd be more than grateful to hear them
(so essentially, I'd like something without (too much) romance, ideally queer coded, suspenseful/thriller vibes, good chemistry between main characters..)

Hey so I'm going around looking for a post. It had some sources on how women perform better/participate more if there are paired pronouns ("he or she", "his or hers" etc) in something rather than gender neutral ones like "they". I'd be really happy to find it so lmk if it sounds familiar?
hmm, off the top of my head it's not coming to me... it sounds related to some of the studies about "gender priming" that i remember were in invisible women, like maybe it was part of a larger discussion on here, if that jogs anyone else's memory

After having a night to think of it, and reading some reviews, my opinion of Doctor Strange 2 mellowed somewhat. I still think it’s very enjoyable, especially its visuals and (some) of the acting (Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen do a great job, some of the cameos are also good, but Rachel McAdams is phoning it in hard, or she’s just not that good)
But its script is a mess and a half. It’s a swiss cheese of plot holes, and the pacing is out of wack, being way too fast to begin with, and padded out after that with lots of random bullshit.
I’d still recommend it for the visual and emotional experience alone (much like the first movie) but the writing is far from satisfactory (I think the writer of Loki being behind this movie is probably why, since that show is a mess and a half too).
#wanda's character writing I think is very well done except for one big issue#which they tried waving away with a stupid throwaway line#strange's character development is very 'stating instead of expressing' where either he or more often other characters tell him what his arc#america chavez's arc is all but non-existent#and what is there is a pretty bullshit 'you were capable all along trust in yourself'#which I think goes against the mentality of the mcu starting with iron man#they also seem to be walking it back in the very next scene which I prefer but is weird#a lot of the changes are walked back in the very next scene#like a major development for strange in the final scene of the movie proper#being dismissed in the post-credits scene with him being basically unaffected#also I feel bad for anybody trying to watch this movie right after doctor strange 1#because without infinity war and wandavision it makes no fucking sense#speaking of wandavision I feel like this movie had to make up for stephen's last minute omission from that show#I feel like strange was supposed to have imprisoned wanda in the end of that show#and freed her because he needed her help in this one#but because that didn't happen we instead have wanda kinda hanging out and strange having done nothing about her#and even dismissing what she had done and saying it's okay#which is very out of character for him#and her for that matter#also also unrelated but doctor strange's cameo in ragnarok was pointless and a plot hole#he was basically padding between thor and loki looking for their dad and finding him#and then when hela was getting ready to invade the 9 realms (of which earth which stephen protects is one)#he did nothing#even though he said he was watching the asgardians closely#i'm not saying he needed to be a major character in that movie (though it would've been rad) but they shouldn't have included the cameo if t#if they weren't going to do anything with him after that point#also also also the setup of mordo from the first movie is sort of fake-paid-off in this one#like it's implied to have happened off-screen#and the version of mordo we see in the movie is an alternate universe one#like this is such bullocks

look i just think it would probably be really fun to marathon all of (9+) doctor who with someone who had never seen the show before and had virtually no context or spoilers for it whatsoever. on the other hand if I made my roommate watch it with me and they said it wasn't for them I'd probably have to kill myself

I liked that post about people neglecting the Doctor Who part of Superwholock when it comes to gay representation, but then tumblr kept showing me a tonne of additions of people going on about fucking Moffat era gay relationships and like.......look I hate to break it to you but Moffat fucking sucks. This is opinion obviously and I’m not very good at articulating why I don’t like his work, and I’m hardly the first person to point out that he sucks, but everything* from DW from the (mind numbingly long) era when he was showrunner makes me full body cringe. I react exactly the same way to Sherlock, and also my brain turns off during both, I just can’t follow the intricately bullshit plotting he tries to do, and why would I bother because he never resolves his plotlines.
This is all to say that yes there were canonical gay relationships in the show during the Moffat era but that doesn’t make them good or well written, you know? You don’t have to argue that people are ignoring them because they aren’t m/m or whatever, it’s highly likely to be they are just poorly written characters and poorly written relationships. Moffat is somehow even worse at writing relationships that feel real and genuine than JK Rowling and that is saying something.
For example, I thought Bill Potts had real potential as a great companion and from what I saw the performance was great, but oh my god the horrendous dialogue they had her say, in just the one episode I watched. One of the first things she says in the show is telling an anecdote about how she fancied one of her customers when she was working at the canteen, so would keep giving her extra chips, and then one day this woman comes in and she’s (gasp) gained weight and Bill doesn’t find her hot any more. And Bill says something along the lines of ‘I’d done this, I’d fatted her’. Like, wow. FUCK YOU Moffat. Was that meant to be a cute relatable anecdote? Can you write anything without making it weird?
RTD era Who was genuinely foundational to me as a young teenager for queer representation and I’m hardly the only one who has said this. But I really doubt if Moffat era Who was what I grew up with, I would have said the same for it. I’m not sure anyone would.
*except Vincent and the Doctor because I’m not made of stone. Moffat didn’t write it and I guess the script was good enough that him being the showrunner didn’t ruin it.

Also side note about Eve of the Daleks, I love that there wasn't a single London accent in that episode. Like get the fuck outta here with that, no more London/British accents in 2k22

So I totally get everyone’s frustration with Dear Doctor having only one (1) conflict, I do (cause same), but I also personally think it is a pretty valid one and makes sense for Prakan’s character. Like this man basically grew up in the hospital, his parents were both doctors, he has always felt a huge responsibility to not only the job, but to this hospital specifically, and he enjoys this job, but I also think it is safe to assume he enjoyed it a lot more before he started seeing Tuaphee. Not because he doesn’t like Tuaphee, but because it made him feel an even bigger responsibility. Prakan, unlike everyone else at the hospital, Knows what happens after death, hell he can see death coming, walking down the hall or standing above a body in the form of Tuaphee. He’s not actually angry AT Tuaphee for doing his job, but he feels responsible on a way bigger level, about a situation that he cannot even control at all, and doesn’t even fully understand, which makes him even more frustrated. The thing is, that Tuaphee doesn’t control the situation either, but he is the Only soul reaper that Prakan sees (at least while on the job) and he also doesn’t really tell him anything because he can’t (it might put the both of them in danger), but that just makes Prakan feel like Tuaphee knows stuff, has the power to do something, but just won’t tell him, just won’t explain it. And when his mom died now in ep 7, it didn’t matter that they had come to a kind of agreement last episode, because now Prakan feels completely lost, and the only thing Tuaphee can say is “I’m sorry, I can’t tell you” which just solidifies the feeling that Prakan already has, and makes it feel like betrayal from a person he cares for, topped of course with the devastation of losing a parent (can’t say unexpectedly but I kinda think he’s been in denial and that’s made it worse).
anyway lmao

watching hide rn and i like the tidbit where emma calls herself the professor's assistant rather than his companion because it's the 70s, and then the episode goes on to spend a great deal of time on developing an equal partnership between the two reminiscent of the evolution of the doctor/companion relationship in the 21st century. love that series 7b, as the series airing in the anniversary year, is so preoccupied with interrogating itself - the show's past, its well worn tropes, and its future
