âCould you teach me?â you ask quietly, and Morax lets out a surprised hum. He seems to have a chivalrous nature you hadnât earlier noticedâhe walks you to your room. You returned form the harbour with nothing to show for the depletion in his own personal fundâapparently items made for the king are delivered directly to him.
âCertainly.â he says quickly. âThough I am not sure why you would ask for me.â
You sigh quietly. You had spent some time thinking, and your parents had never made a second attempt to contact you. It seemed like the situation was dire, and since going back is an option they will never suggest or accept, you want to be able to act alone and get the information you need about whatâs going on. It may take years to become conversational, but a start is a start. And even further than that, any further separation from him now might lead to a regression in the peaceful truce you seem to have created.
âYou should send a response to your parents. I will see to it that it is delivered and replied to immediately.â
You glance up at Morax, wondering how he knew what you were thinking. But he wonât meet your eyes, sensing your question. âThe expression on your face is one I know I've made a hundred times. Do not act in a way that will breed regret. It is an ugly thing.â
âI will think about it.â
âGood. we can start your language lessons tomorrow, if you wish.â
âThank you.â
âNo problem,â he says, as you reach your room. âShuĂŹ gĂš hÇo jiĂ o.â you look at him in confusion, and the small smile on his face quirks a little. âAn advance on your first lesson. It means âsleep well.â
You smile as you open the door to your room. âShui ge hao jue.â you say back. Your tones are wrong, but Morax notes that even a stranger on the streets would have been able to understand what you're saying. He smiles at your closed door, and turns to retire to his room for the night.
~~~
âNo abyssal movement?â Morax asks Xiao. Through Xiaoâs reconnaissance and the little he noticed while in your kingdom, he has concluded that the crop death and freak weather conditions that lead to the decline of your kingdoms prosperity is abyss related. But he just canât figure out why.
Xiao shakes his head. âNot from their entities. I am unable to locate the source of the issue.â
âThe spread of the population is further out from the palace?â
âYes, the crops on the outskirts seem to do better there, but the weather conditions arenât exactly ideal. If the people can avoid famine, they will struggle with maintaining a safe place to live.â Xiao reports. His words confirm his suspicions entirely. You werenât sent away because your kingdom wanted just the trade support from Liyue, but because the threat was from inside the palace. You were sent away for your own protection. But that begs the question: if your parents know the issue, why arenât they doing anything about it?
âWork on getting closer to the palace. The quicker we understand what is happening, the sooner I can explain it to her.â Morax says, letting out a resolute sigh. âIn the meantime, if you could aid in informing the traders that any excess produce can be sold to us for 3 times the standard price, that would be appreciated. I fear her kingdom is going to need more supplies than they think.â
~~~
Morax had agreed to teach you, just as youâd hoped, but you couldnât sit around all day, waiting for him to find you. You were going to catch a headstart. Youâd written a reply to you parents, asking them why they decided to send you away instead of telling you the truth, or how the abyss order came to the palace and your kingdom in the first place. You didnât expect an honest reply, but it was worth a try.
The library is a grand and imposing roomâfloor to ceiling shelves full of books, with a dark wooden decor. Youâre greeted by a slight middle aged woman as soon as you enter. Her dark hair and clothing matches the libraryâs interior, and her glasses shimmer with the warm glint of candlelight.
âAh. Deus Auri told me I might be expecting you. I am Zhi. It is lovely to meet you.â She inclines her head towards you, and you return the gesture, bowing fully. She chuckles lightly.
âThe pleasure is mine.â you pause. Deus Auri? Yet another name? âIf you don't mind me asking, why does the king have so many names?â
Zhi smiles. âThat is something he should tell you himself.â she smooths her slick black ponytail and smiles. âHere.â she hands you something that looks like a childâs book. âThe mechanism on the back will play the audio. Try to recognise the characters from the sound.â
You gape at her. To be handed a childâs book in earnest was not on your list today, but you request a sheet of paper and something to write with, and you do as she asks. You tear through the first, having picked up some recurring characters and their sounds, as well as noting down some guesses. While youâre deep in focus, Zhi brings you more books, and you solidify your guesses. It's as youâre buried in a growing pile of books, and Zhi is in the process of adding more that Morax comes to find you.
âI see you have started without me.â he smiles.
âI have no other way to spend my time. I prefer to engage in fruitful endeavours wherever possible.â You donât look up from your paper and charcoal.
âWhat have you discovered thus far?â
You clear your throat and look up at him. Once again, you find yourself staring at him in what must be his casual wear, his impossibly long hair tied back, but not in the usual intricate braids. He seems to glow in the warm lighting of the library.
ââShĂ©nmeâ seems to mean âwhatâ.â you say quietly, glancing at the scribbles on your paper.
âCorrect. This method of learning is frustrating, no?â he says, pulling up the chair next to you. Youâre quick to move your paper out of the way, more out of embarrassment than anything else. He's so close, too close even. If you moved slightly, your arms would be touching. He seems to be unbothered by the proximity, sneaking a glance at the paper you so unsubtly stashed away.
âPerhaps a little.â you reply. âThere is a more pressing matter at hand. Why do you have so many names?â
Morax laughs at that, a deep, velvety sound you are certain you have never heard. But now you have, you fear you might spend every day trying to coax it out of him whenever possible.Â
âI was of the impression we had closed this discussion.â
âWe have not.â you scowl. âDeus Auri, Zhongli, Morax, Rex Lapis.. Your arguments do not work on me. How does one man find himself with this manyâŠâ Morax knew that at one point, your stubbornness would be directed at him more intentionally than you refusing to look or speak to him. He did not expect it to be like this, but he finds that he does not begrudge it. To see fire in your eyes again, not to preserve yourself but out of real curiosity, to see you comfortable enough to question him, to spend time in the library by yourself⊠The wilting flower that was delivered to his doorstep has somehow found a way to bloom, and he is grateful.Â
âWhy are you looking at me like that?â you ask, blinking at him.
âA man who has lived thousands of years must have the appropriate amount of names.â
âYou said youâre only 3 years my senior.â
âIn this particular lifetime, yes.â Morax smiles. He was not expecting to explain this to you today.
âYou donât mean to implyââ
âReincarnation. Yes. before being the humble ruler of Liyue, I was their godâMorax. And then I was their sovereignâRex lapis, and before all of that, when Liyue itself wasnât a nation, and the first inklings of culture began to form, to the first ones, I was Deus Auri.â
You stare at him slack mouthed.
âSo you mean to tell me that you saw the creation of Liyue?â
Morax sits back in his seat, his slightly relaxed posture so foreign to you that you resist the urge to gawk at him even more. âHow else would you expect Liyue to be so connected to its roots?â
âIs reincarnation a gift only afforded to the gods, or are we mere mortals afforded the same fate?â you ask drily, and Morax chuckles again.
âReincarnation cycles are typically shorter for those favoured by Celestia. Not only do we find ourselves living longer, but we also find ourselves reincarnated as few as years after our deaths. For mortals, like your parents or Alanna, for example, they might find it takes decades, or even centuries. By then, so much time has passed that it is unlikely they will be able to be identified by the family of those they loved. It is easier for those like us to identify mortals we have known and loved in the pastâknowing life is ephemeral makes it easier for us to pay attention to the smaller things.â
You notice that Morax pointedly does not include you in his description of âmortalsâ but you let it slideâyou are edging closer to the information you seek, and itâs best not to get caught on tangents.
âReincarnation stays within families, I assume?â you ask. Zhongli nods. âSo if you were to find yourself reincarnated into a member of your extended family, how would you find yourself back on your throne?â
He clears his throat. âAn insightful question. It can be a difficult process. One that can tear families apart.â Morax sits up, adjusting his billowing sleeves in an action you can only assume is his version of fidgeting.Â
âYou said earlier that you were fine with whatever I wanted to call you, but I have to insist. What do you want me to call you? I wonât take no for an answer.â
Morax meets your determined stare and sighs a little. âLet us make an arrangement. If you can make it through this lesson I will teach you to read the characters for my name.âÂ
You grin. Youâve made headway with him.
Morax, you learn, may be somewhat lenient with you in day to day life, however, when it comes to lessons, he is a force to be reckoned with. He is not loud or abusive, but he is firm, and if you believed you were stubborn, he has proved you otherwise.
âThey sound the same to me.â you complain after Morax attempts to explain tones to you once again.
âYou will learn to differentiate them, but you have to train your ears from the start.â he fires off another set of words that sound the same, and you shut off, refusing to listen any further.Â
âI canât bear any more today. I forfeit my prize. I give up.â
Morax sighs, taking the charcoal from your hands and neatly writing out two characters. He writes the phonetic pronunciation underneath each character, and turns it towards you.
âIf you can pronounce this correctly, we can resume practising tomorrow. If not, Zhi and Xiao will teach you.â
You scowl at him, and the smile he sends back to you is placid, but if youâd paid closer attention, you might have noticed a hint of concern in his eyes. Has he pushed you too far? Is this a fair test? Tones are difficult for all learners, and had he not aided the development of this language himself, he might not have been able to grasp them. Your brow furrows as you try to match the tones to the sounds, and he watches you go back and forth between what youâre reading, and the sound you want to make.
âZhĆnglĂŹ.â You say quietly, and his smile deepens. âAm I right?â
âPerfect.â he replies quickly. You try your best to hide your pleased smile, but itâs impossible. Zhongli smiles, but for a different reason. You had gotten his name right, but heâd written the phonetics incorrectly. Either you remembered from the very first meeting youâd had all those days ago, or you knew his name from elsewhere. And considering that all those who used to call him Zhongli died before he was seated on the throne, heâs inclined to believe you know his name from somewhere else.
âSo Iâll see you back here tommorrow?â
âOf course.â Zhongli smiles. âI wouldn't dream of ever abandoning my best student.â
~~~
âZhĆnglĂŹ.â You whisper to yourself, in the privacy of your own room, staring at the paper. His handwriting is immaculateâso calculated that you could have believed it was printed. But it doesnât match the sound of his name. He says, you're right, and you flip through your memories to try and remember the sound of his name when he introduced himself all that time ago, but you just can't grasp it.Â
You have nothing else to do, so you rewrite your notes from the day and stare at the reply to your parent's letyer. And stare some more. In fact, you stare at it so much so that you are sure the desperate pleas for more information are burned onto your retinas.
Alanna is quiet, busy reorganising your wardrobe and jewellery. Small tasks like this keep her occupiedâuntil she picks up a teal blue necklace, and her thoughts start spiralling again. She scowls. Her focus is on you and making sure youâre happy, and she canât do that if her mind is elsewhere.
âIâm bored.â she smiles. âFancy getting dressed up for dinner?â
âWhy would I do that?â
âFor your dear assistant who cannot layer traditional wear and needs practice.â she smiles. âYou know. Just in case.â
You sigh. You have never once been able to resist her smile, and the thought that she should have been the princess passes your mind again. âOf course. I shall be your doll for the day.â
Your meeting with Alannaâs comb is delayed as a knock on the door rings out. Perhaps it's delusion, but youâve begun to recognise Zhongliâs knocks. Firm and resonant, you seem to hear them long after his fist has left the door.
âThe king seems to believe that I have nothing to do with my time.â you tease as you open your door. He chuckles lightly as you register the piles of silk in his hands.
âThe pieces you requested are ready. It seems the modiste likes you more than he likes meâlast time I requested his aid for a festival he cut it rather fine with the delivery.â This is partially a lie. Zhongli requested that your pieces be finished faster.
âYou should think of a name for this delivery service of yours.â You take the fabric from his hands and turn to place it on your bed. He makes no moves to follow you, standing at the threshold as if there is an invisible barrier. Alanna, once again, is nowhere to be found.
âPerhaps I should.â He smiles ever so slightly. Maybe it is more accurate to call it a twitch of the lips. âWill you be joining me for dinner?â
âAlanna believes I shall. She is insisting on using me as her mannequin for the evening, wherever she is. If I arrive with half finished makeup as evidence of my impatience you are not to laugh at me.â
âI would never dream of such a thing.â And the king of Liyue, leans ever so slightly against your doorframe as he crosses his arms.
Hi I hope your having a good day by the time you read this! I was hoping I could request Minthara, Karlach, Gale, and Zevlor (If you write for him) reacting to a Tav that looks visibly under the weather but ignores it to continue to do things rather than resting?
Heh Iâve got a cold thatâs kicking my ass rn but even tho itâs the week before thanksgiving break my college classes are piling me with stuff to do ya know?
I'm currently dealing with similar things, anon. Life demands us to function even at our worst sometimes. The migranes can be ruthless. Please make sure to rest and take care of yourself. You're more important than your assignments and classes.
Dealing with a stressed Tav who refuses to rest.
[Fluff, comfort, nb!reader]
[Minthara, Karlach, Gale, Zevlor]
Minthara
As cruel and cold as she tends to be, there is certainly some tenderness deep inside her heart that's saved solely for you.
If it was someone else, she wouldn't have cared. If anything she expects her followers to work themselves to the death if it benfited her, she has no tolerance for the weak.
And yet, every principle she has ever held goes straight out the window when it comes to you. The sight of your visibly tired face and exhausted body makes her furrow her eyebrows in worry, forms a tightness in her chest.
She respects you immensely, and she knows for a fact you're not weak. If anything you're stronger than anyone she has ever met before.
Minthara wants to show that she can be strong for you too, prove herself as the capable and reliable partner you entrusted your heart with. Take the burdens off your shoulders and carry it on her own. No price is too great when it comes to ensuring your well being, whether it be a life or gold.
But even her own abilities only extend so far, she knows there are things that you simply can't let her handle. She feels as if she failed you when the only thing she can do is stand there uselessly whilst you struggle through your hardships.
Kind words of encouragement don't come easily for her. There's no softness left on her tongue, and tenderness is a foreign language long forgotten. Yet she tries, she still tries through failed awkward attempts and borderline counterproductive advice. She still tries to offer some sort of relief for you, to understand you better, to just be with you.
Karlach
It pains her in a way, seeing you brush off your own health so easily and discard your wellbeing. You don't realise how much she envies you, envies having the health to spare to neglect.
The engine burns against her chest, sending her on a coughing fit more times than she could count, her time is nearing its end.
If she were you, she'd treasure it. Her life, her body, and her own pulsing heart.
Karlach still buries her feelings and comforts you, putting your needs above hers. Attempting to get you to smile again, tricking you into having at least a nap when you're especially exhausted.
You're a soldier, she reminds you, you're brave, strong, and capable. And she will always have your back no matter what, so don't go fighting the world on your own when it's better to take a step back and recover first.
Gale
She'd drown you with kisses, brighten your day up with hugs, and offer the most loving and tender touches. Each word coming from her mouth is filled with sincerity, yet it barely scrapes the surface of how deep her love is for you.
He's been there more than once. Hell, he still neglects his own health for his studies, even to this day. He can relate to you a lot.
It's the feeling of being left behind, everyone else seems to have their ducks in a row while you're struggling just to stay afloat ontop of the water. How tempting it is just to give in and sink, the threat of the abyss below whispering into your ears.
Yet you stay swimming, the both of you need to. Have to.
No matter how muddy and ruthless the current gets, no matter how aggressive the waves become. He'll hold your hand amidst the storm and anchor you to him.
Each one resurfacing the other whenever they start to drown, pulling each other up.
It's not the most healthy, he is self-aware enough to admit it. But he can't condem you for what he himself is guilty of, he can't tell you to take a rest when the orb bleeds his sins of greed through his chest.
Zevlor
He brings you food, peeled oranges and cut apples, sweet tea and freshly baked cookies. Shares his lunch and dinner with you, shares his own warmth too under the blanket.
He has experienced many things throughout his long life, he has lead an army in hell and did whatever he had to do for the sake of his people.
He has sacrificed many years, decades even of his own life for them. He would've given it all for them if he could, to ensure their freedom, to ensure the kids got to grow up safe and sound.
In the same way, he is ready to sacrifice his well-being to preserve yours. Ready to bear your responsibilities so you can go rest and sleep soundly.
So please, don't refuse an old person like him when he invites you over for some tea and to take a breath. He's absolutely certain that you can relay on him for whatever tasks you have, even stay at his own home if you require assistance.
A big part of why he managed to survive all those years of war, is because he knew when to ask for help, when to cast aside his pride and let even strangers lend a hand for the sake of his people.
He doesn't order you outright. He's not your general, and he doesn't have authority over you. Yet his voice is firm when he insists on you accepting help, allowing yourself this small mercy.
A letter from Simon âGhostâ Riley
Summary: Ghost writes you a letter after Price unexpectedly sends you into witness protection, breaking your heart. With a looming threat of an attack from a terrorist organization on the horizon, Ghost urges you to mend fences with Price or at least play nice until the enemy is thwarted. Should you hear him out?
Iâm not sure how to start this. All I can hope for is that you wonât throw this letter into the ocean until youâve finished reading it. Iâve heard Laswell sent you somewhere on the beach. Thatâs nice I guess. Iâm not a big fan of the ocean, but I know most people are. Maybe you are. You and I never talked about anything like that, but maybe you did with Johnny? Heâs a big fan of the water. Heâs always yammering on about wanting to take a vacation somewhere tropical. He says tropical resorts just have âbetter water sports.â Whatever that means. Maybe Laswell can send him your way when he starts feeling better. I know heâd like to spend the time with you. Heâs a fan of yours. Kyle too. Theyâve told me a lot about you over these last few days.
And I want to apologize for that. Not for listening to them, but for not listening to you. Iâm sorry I didnât get to know you on my own. You have to understand John is my brother. I donât mean in some âbrother in armsâ sort of bullshit way. I mean I consider him my family, my kin, my blood. Heâs the closest thing I have to the real thing these days, so Iâm protective of him, but Iâve done it in a way that has been unkind toward you.
I was suspicious of you when we first met. I thought that your entrance into Johnâs life was going to bring him harm. Whether you were going to do so maliciously or in a less nefarious way I wasnât quite sure. But I was wrong and Iâd like to apologize to you.
You have changed John. He's more at ease now than I've seen him in years. He laughs more. So much more, and it's a sound that I donât think Iâll ever be able to get out of my head. It's not a funny laugh, but one filled with genuine joy. It's stupid and infectious and it even has started to rub off on Johnny and Kyle. They both look less tense these days.
But you havenât just made John a different man outside of the field, somehow youâve changed him on it too. He fights differently. I donât know how to explain it other than to say heâs more focused now. More determined. Itâs like heâs fighting not just for the mission objective, but for something beyond it. Something personal. Maybe thatâs just what it looks like when someone fights beyond duty or honor. Iâm not sure. But youâve made him a better soldier and leader for it. So thank you because I donât think I would be here without your effect on him. What happened at the hangar is the closest weâve come to death in a long time and I know thatâs probably shaken John more than heâs let on.
If you are still reading this, I have a favor to ask of you. I know I donât have any right to. My initial skepticism and rudeness toward you probably caused you a lot of pain, and for that, I am truly sorry. But John needs your help. So please come back to the States and help him end these terrorists for good.
I donât know whatâs been said between you, but Iâm sure youâre in the right. Donât tell him I said this but John tends to be a stubborn ass. So please forgive him. Or at least, help him through this and I promise Iâll keep him from you for as long as you wish.
Iâll be in your debt.
Sincerely,
Simon âGhostâ Riley
P.S. You two werenât as sly as you thought. It wasnât hard to see something more was going on between you when you wreaked like an ashtray all the time and Iâve never seen you smoke.
you know fuck people trying to be the purity police in fandoms recently, holding this moral high ground like it has its place there.
This is mostly about the way Iâve seen people treat ff authors and works. It baffles me to see fanfics being « cancelled » on twitter or TikTok or even there, seeing author being bullied and harassed because their work isnât « woke enough » « problematic » or doesnt follow your particular hcs.
Fun fact ao3 has a tagging system. Everything that is important is tagged and you are warned. If you see « dead dove do no eat » donât read it, but if you go around social media trying to cancel a piece of fiction which is properly fucking tagged because you just do not read the warning thatâs on you mf.
Most importantly I donât understand when this fucking turned around, because at the end of day, fanfiction writer are doing this for kicks, for shits and giggles if I may. Itâs free work, they are not paid to write, whatever they do or say is not rewarded with money. So no you canât hold them to your moral fucking high ground, because it has no place there.
It has no influence, you are not forced to read it, if you donât like it leave it. But cancelling it, trying to interact with authors but at the end of day turning that against them, distorting everything they say, you sure as hell are a bunch of good people eh.
Ff authors are not influencers, they donât make money out of their content, they donât influence shit, they donât owe you purity in their work, wokeness in their work. They write most of the time alone or sometimes with beta readers, for fun, they are at the end of the day amateurs and since they donât make money out of this shit and it is not that fucking serious they donât owe you anything, they donât owe you being good, they donât owe you posting a lot, they donât owe you content, they donât owe you fucking explanations and excuses.
They tag their stuff, some put warning at the beginning of each chapter or one shot.
The rest is on you.
Ill say once more because it truly drives me insane, you canât hold a moral high ground on something that is free, not rewarded with any price or money, by people you do not know, that write for fun or other reason and that is properly tagged.
You have a problem with it, itâs yours, do not make it everyoneâs problem and bully authors or people.
Good on you for fucking up people safe place or interest.
And stop treating authors like celebrities, if you like their stuff, read it, enjoy it, comment on it, but donât go around idolising people and just leave them be.
People try so hard to be moral but have no problem bullying, harassing and sending death threat for somethings that isnât that fucking serious at the end of the day.
People can read or write whatever the fuck they want and if you donât want to read it then donât.
#this is about the marauders fandom atm#people drive me insane#free labor and you ask for stuff#let fan fictions writers alone#if ao3 has a tagging system why donât you use it#I have been in a lot of fandoms in my life but god this one is insane#fuck your moral high ground
But you donât steal from the King and live to tell the tale. When the Ice Phoenix discovers her theft and demands payment, the cost is too steep. Mourning and enraged, she challenges him, only to lose. To spare her clan from the Kingâs wrath, her father offers her as a bride, and for a reason she cannot fathom, the King agrees. Revenge is a delicate game SunnĂ«va is determined to play, even if killing the God of Death is no easy feat. But as secrets unfold around the alluring King, and dark threats emerge from the shadows, SunnĂ«va struggles to hold on to her hatredâand her heart. Inspired by Beauty and the Beast, Kingâs Bride is the first book in Beck Michaelsâ companion prequel series, the Chronicles of Urnâdark fables founded in forbidden love and strong-willed women who bring kings to their knees.
Review:
A Bride sent to kill the God of Death in this gorgeous Beaty and the Beast inspired story. The Everfrost is a land ruled by the King in his castle of Ice, he is known as the Ice Phoenix or the God of Death. The clans that live in the land know only one rule to survive: paying the King his due and never taking what belongs to him. When SunnĂ«vaâs brother is injured and the only way to cure him is stealing a rose from the Kingâs castle, she is willing to do anything.... but that rose has a cost and the next thing she knows the King has come to collect... specifically collect in the form of SunnĂ«va as his bride. Her father commands that she kill the king least her sister pay the price of his abuse if she does not, yet the more SunnĂ«va discovers of her new husband the more she begins to question where her alliances truly lie and if the monster she thought she knew was actually the villain. With betrayals at every corner and Gods who want revenge and to start wars. can SunnĂ«va figure out who she can trust before itâs too late. The God of Death has his own secrets for wanting SunnĂ«va as his bride. yet with honeyed words, care, and love she has never known, SunnĂ«va finds herself falling for the one person she was suppose to hate... but when his secrets are revealed, will she be able to love the monster inside? This was such a fantastic story that only got better and better with each chapter. Seriously, I was hooked by the end and the romance between SunnĂ«va and Jökull was AMAZING. The dude just LOVES HER SO MUCH, He was a fantastic love interests and the SPICE, I am just fanning myself from how good it was. This is the first book in a series (they can be read as standalones) but I already know I will be reading the rest of these books cuz THIS ONE WAS AMAZING!!! You get to see SunnĂ«va grow so much throughout the books and you get to see her journey of healing and opening herself to love, and that was just so so beautiful to read. She goes through so much and sheâs a warrior for sure. Gosh, I really canât even begin to put into words how good this book was, definitely pick it up if you love fantasy romances!!!
*Thank you Beck Michaels for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*
You blink twice at Jaemin, who is hovering protectively over your form. As your best friend, Jaeminâs always been cautious of you because of his alpha instincts. This oddly includes finding him in your apartment on random days, cooking you dinner because you âcanât make it yourself,â walking you around campus and glaring at anyone who glances your way, and finally, following you to places he should never be at anyways. Tonight falls under the last category, where you were itching to have a nice time with some of your group partners in your Economics class. You all collectively agreed that grabbing drinks at the nearby bar on campus was a good idea. Everything was going perfectly until Jaemin came storming into the bar, almost pushing one of your friends from his spot next to you.
You awkwardly clear your throat, laughing breathily as you stand, trying to move Jaemin away from the table. You can feel the heavy stares of your classmates on your back, and you try your best to ignore it. Once youâre out of earshot, you mumble lowly to him.
âUh, Jaem, why are you here?â
He frowns at you. The expression on his face is clearly one of disappointment. âItâs a full moon. You shouldnât be out here, especially if there are other alphas lurking around.â
You tend to frequently forget that Jaemin gets extremely clingy when the full moon rises, and he often perceives most of the population as a threat to your life. In fact, youâre both very good friends with Jeno, another fellow alpha on campus. Jenoâs shown time after time that he has absolutely no interest in you, but when the full moon appears, Jaeminâs convinced that Jeno wants to kidnap you and keep you locked in his dorm forever.
You sigh. âJaemin, Iâm fine. Iâm just hanging out with my friends. There are no alphas around, I promise.â
His frown grows deeper. âI passed two of them on the way here. They could have easily hurt you.â
âHow about you have a drink with us?â You offer, knowing his worries arenât subsiding anytime soon. âYou can relax and make sure Iâm safe.â
The tension in his shoulders loosen at your suggestion, and he hesitantly agrees. You order a beer for him and he reluctantly follows you back to the table. Your friends are eyeing him warily.
âEveryone, this is Jaemin,â you introduce awkwardly. âIs it okay if he joins us?â
Jeongyeon is the first to speak, despite everyoneâs reluctance. âSure, the more the merrier!â
You toss her a grateful smile and Jaemin slides in next to you, unaware of the looks heâs receiving. Luckily, Seulgi launches into a discussion about her day before anyone else can comment. It isnât long before Chanwoo leans over to whisper in your ear, causing Jaemin to stiffen beside you.
âIs your friend okay? He looks like he hates all of us.â
You brush off Chanwooâs question. âHeâs fine, just tense. Rough time in the semester, you know?â
Chanwoo nods but doesnât seem convinced by your answer. No one else approaches you about Jaemin for the rest of the time, and the boy next to you chooses to remain silent. You bid goodbye to the group at the end of the night with Jaemin giving subtle nods to each of them. He still hovers protectively over you on the walk back to the campus dorms.
âYou really didnât have to come out tonight,â you mumble to your best friend as he walks alongside you. âI was fine on my own.â
âYouâre not fine on nights like these,â he responds, and you can hear the frustration in his tone. âYou donât know whatâs out there.â
You huff and stop in your tracks, turning around to face him. You cross your arms over your chest.
âNo one is going to hurt me! No one has ever tried to hurt me on a full moon, itâs just your imagination! Itâs annoying how much you follow me around, Jaemin, seriously.â
Heâs visibly hurt by your outburst and you instantly feel regret. You can almost feel him shutting you away, and it pulls at your chest. He motions to your dorm, which is only a few feet away from where youâre standing.
âGood night. I hope you sleep well.â
âJaemin-â
You watch as your best friend scurries down the sidewalk, not sparing a single glance back at you.
â
You startle Jeno the next day, pounding on his door and ignoring the glares youâre receiving in his hallway. The boy sleepily opens the door up for you, hair sticking out in multiple directions. He mumbles something under his breath and you ignore him, pushing through and entering his room.
âWell, come on in,â he hisses sarcastically.
You have no time to humor him. âAre alphas usually super clingy and annoying?â
He pauses at the question, closing the door slowly. You raise an eyebrow at his hesitation.
âUm, is this about Jaemin?â
âMaybe,â you drawl, watching Jeno carefully. He definitely knows something heâs not telling you about. âAnd what if it was?â
âThen I would say you need to talk to Jaemin.â
You roll your eyes. âJeno!â
âWhat?â He retorts, avoiding your eyes as much as possible. âItâs not my place to say.â
âI donât care if itâs your place or not,â you say, frustrated by your lack of alpha knowledge. Youâve tried to learn more since Jaemin presented himself, but it was difficult since many alpha secrets were kept between alphas only. âI need to know whatâs going on with him. Heâs been following me around every full moon like heâs expecting me to get mugged or something!â
Jeno exhales loudly. âHe hasnât talked to you? About anything?â
You huff. âJeno, if I needed answers, I wouldnât be standing here with you.â
The more you talk, the more Jeno grows uncomfortable. It almost seems like it pains him to say anything about Jaemin without him present, and itâs getting on your nerves. Jaemin usually never keeps secrets from you and it must be pretty big if Jeno is barely holding himself together.
Jeno finally speaks after you watch him run circles in his head. âWhat do you know about mates? Alpha mates?â
You frown, tilting your head to the side. âMates? I didnât even know alphas had mates.â
âTheyâre chosen specifically by an alpha. Someone the alpha has a connection to, someone they would like to spend the rest of their life with.â
Heâs still not making any sense to you. Does Jaemin have a mate? Is it someone you know?
Jeno can see the gears spinning and he scoffs. He whispers something under his breath that you canât hear.
âYou need to talk to Jaemin about this. I really canât say any more.â
You spare Jeno the interrogation and leave his room, thoughts swirling in your head. Heâs given you everything and nothing at once, and you donât even know if Jaemin will offer anything better. You trek over to his dorm anyways, on a mission.
His eyes soften when he sees you behind the door. It tugs at your heartstrings and he motions for you to come inside. The awkward tension drowns the room and you sway on your feet.
âIâm sorry,â he says first. âI know I made you uncomfortable by being with your friends last night, and I shouldâve stayed away. I just get very worried around the full moon because-â
âWhat are alpha mates?â
Jaemin chokes, not expecting your question. You watch as he gathers himself again, and this time, he canât bear to look at you.
âWhere did you hear that from?â
âJeno.â
Jaemin curses lowly. You frown, your gaze never faltering. You can practically see him trying to come up with some type of excuse.
âJaemin, I want the truth.â
He sighs. âCan you sit down? Please?â
You reluctantly follow his request, taking a seat on his bed. He paces around the room, looking more nervous than youâve ever seen him before. You begin to grow antsy while watching him.
âIf you donât want to tell me, thatâs fine.â
His head snaps up to look at you, heart breaking at the dejected look on your face. He shakes his head and takes a seat next to you.
âI do, I want to tell you everything. I just want you to have a choice first,â he states, staring at you as if you hold all the answers.
You frown and shake your head. âWhat choice? Youâre not making any sense.â
âI, uh, I unknowingly bonded myself to you. You became my mate, and I realized it too late. We spent too much time together and I should have taken a step back before it got too serious. I was just- Iâm never in the correct headspace when Iâm around you, and it causes me to impulsively make decisions. I canât break the bond unless I wish to die a slow death, but if you want me to, I can try.â
Youâre spiraling. Your brain is short circuiting, and youâre unsure of what to say in response. Your best friend has just confessed that he bonded himself to you for life, which probably runs deeper than marriage. If you reject him, heâll die a painful death.
Wonderful.
Jaemin starts freaking out, standing back up and resuming his pacing. âFuck, I shouldnât have said anything. I should have left weeks ago, I shouldnât even be bothering you with this. Listen, we can forget this ever happened. Iâll just- Iâll figure something out. Surely, I can break the bond-â
âJaemin,â you say timidly. He stops in his tracks at the sound of your voice. âI think Iâm okay with being your mate. I mean, Iâd rather have it be you than anyone else. Not like youâre my second choice or anything! I just-â
He kneels down, his hands resting on the expanse of your thighs, causing you to jolt at the contact. His hands feel oddly warm, and itâs sending a plethora of dirty thoughts to your head.
âI donât want you to do this because you feel bad,â he speaks softly. âIf you donât want this, we donât have to do it. Itâs my fault, and Iâll pay the price.â
You protest. âNo, Iâm doing this because I want to-â
âItâs a big decision-â
âI know that, and I-â
âI hardly think youâve thought through this carefully-â
âDonât tell me what I havenât done-â
âIâll just move away. Itâll be easier for the both of us that way.â
âJaemin,â you hiss, placing your hands on his shoulders to stop him. âCan you quit being so difficult? Iâm telling you I want to be with you and your rejection is making me feel upset.â
His expression falls. âI didnât mean to make you upset. I donât want to cage you in, thatâs all.â
âYou arenât caging me in,â you promise him. âCan you tell me what being a mate entails?â
He flushes deep red, and you grow anxious once again. He removes his hands from your thighs and you silently wish he kept them there. He stands again, avoiding your questioning gaze.
âUm, well, technically- I mean, itâs just-â
âJaemin,â you say sternly. âStop dancing around the subject.â
He clears his throat. âTechnically, weâre not fully mated yet. In order to complete the bonding process, we need to- um, well, we need to-â
âJaemin!â
âWe need to fuck!â
That definitely floors you. You blink at him, not believing what he said. You havenât slept with anyone in months. Youâre not going to lie â youâve thought about Jaemin in that way a handful of times, mostly when itâs late at night and youâre left with an imaginative mind. You didnât realize it could ever become a reality.
He starts rambling again. âOf course, I donât want to make you do anything youâre uncomfortable with. I canât imagine me putting my dick anywhere near you is appealing at the moment, so we can probably just forget it and-â
You say his name again to bring him out of his thoughts. âCan we try?â
He sputters, more than the last time. âW-What?â
âI mean, it canât hurt, right? I trust you.â
âU-Uh, um, uh, I-â He short circuits in front of you, struggling to find coherent words.
You donât give him time to second guess again, immediately falling to your knees and reaching for the band of his sweatpants.
âWoah, woah, wait, let me just-â
Your mouth waters when you pull his cock out from his briefs, the tip already red and leaking. You donât know if itâs because heâs an alpha, but his cock is absurdly large and thick. You can barely wrap your hand around the base and the thought of taking him into your mouth is daunting, but you would regret it if you didnât try. You take an experimental lick, watching the way Jaemin struggles above you.
âSlow down, we donât have to do this now-â
You ignore him again, enveloping the tip in your mouth as he releases a long groan. Your eyes flutter shut, pushing him deeper and deeper into your throat. You run your tongue along the base of his cock, licking and swallowing him. Heâs barely holding on to the last string of his control, and you can tell by the way his hands are clenched at his sides.
You decide to push him further, casually deepthroating him and locking your gaze with his. The sound of you choking on him snaps him awake, and it isnât long before heâs gripping your hair and throwing you on his bed. You squeal at the force of his movements. He pushes you on your stomach, fingers gripping the flesh of your ass.
He hisses in your ear. âYouâre going to be a good girl for your alpha, arenât you?â
âIâll be good, alpha,â you keen. âIâm good for you.â
âYeah?â He grunts, watching as you arch your back. âYouâve been waiting a long time for me, havenât you?â
âSo long,â you practically sob. âJust want my alpha to make me feel good.â
You hear the rip of your skirt and he tears the fabric of your top, tossing both items across the room. Heâs feral at this point and you have no intention of stopping him. It feels electrifying to have him this close to you, touching you in all the places you never thought before.
Even though heâs your best friend, it feels as if heâs been doing this with you for years. He doesnât feel like a stranger as he grabs your waist, finger running up and down your clothed slit.
âAw, pretty girl, look at how wet you are for me,â he muses, pulling your underwear down to fully see you. âSo beautiful. Is this all for me?â
âYes,â you whimper. âAll for you, just for you.â
You see stars when he sinks his finger into you, moaning at his touch. You hear him murmur behind you.
âSo so perfect, so pretty and wet. Youâre so good for your alpha.â
You flourish under Jaeminâs praises, his eyes observing as you submit further to him. You wish you read more on the subject of alphas and their mates. The way Jaeminâs touching you is sending your mind into overdrive, and youâre not even sure what to do when you hear the slick of your cunt as he slides another finger into you. Heâs cooing at you, chanting how youâre such a âgood girlâ for him.
You shut your eyes as he builds a steady pace with his fingers, brushing against your sweet spot. You moan loudly, not registering the volume of your voice. He doesnât seem to mind you being loud either.
âSuch pretty noises,â he hums, digging his other hand into your side and picking up the pace inside of you. You cry and squirm away from him, but he holds you in place. âI imagined for so long what you would sound like. Full moons were the worst. I couldnât bear the thought of someone else being able to see you like this, touch you like this. You drove me insane.â
âJ-Jaemin,â you whimper, getting closer and closer to snapping.
He hums again in response. âAlmost there, sweet girl? Youâre so pliant for me, so easy to fuck. But itâs all for me and only me, isnât that right?â
âYes, yes, only for you, alpha,â you whisper, fingers gripping the sheets as you near the edge.
âPretty little pussy you have, I canât wait to knot you. Youâre going to take my knot so well, arenât you? I chose you to take it, and to stuff your cunt full of my cum. I wonder how I could fit my cock into you, you seem too small to take it, pretty girl.â
âI-I can t-take it,â you struggle to get the words out, your brain turning a bit fuzzy. Once he brushes your sweet spot again, your body explodes and you sob loudly at the intensity of your orgasm. Jaemin praises you throughout it, eyes locked on your cunt gushing into his palm.
âSo pretty, such a pretty girl. You came so much for me.â
As you float down from your high, you can hear the sound of Jaemin greedily licking his fingers. You nearly scream when you feel his tongue prod at your pussy.
âNo, n-no, Jaem, please-â you begin to beg, squeamish from the overstimulation, but itâs useless. He loves the taste of your cunt already, digging in like itâs his last meal.
Your body begins to ache and you slowly sink down on the bed, tired of arching your back. Jaemin doesnât seem to mind, following you down as he slurps up your cunt. Youâre mumbling incoherent noises as he sucks on your folds, and you can feel his smile when he plays with your clit.
âAlpha,â you whisper breathlessly. âAlpha, I canât.â
He clicks his tongue. âI know you can. I chose you because you can. Take what I give you, pretty girl. I know you can be good for me.â
You lay there, boneless, as he dips his tongue into your entrance. You barely scream when your second orgasm rolls over you, the sound catching in your throat. He licks up the evidence and you try to wave your hand back to stop him. He gets the message, pulling back and wiping his chin with the back of his hand.
âYou taste so sweet, pretty girl. Iâve never tasted a cunt that good before. All for me, right?â
âYes,â you answer. âAll for you, alpha.â
You hear him shifting behind you, and you see him toss his clothes over his shoulder. He picks you up and adjusts you until youâre seated on his lap, hovering just above his cock. He takes note of your sleepy gaze and smiles, kissing down your neck.
âTired, sweet girl? Donât want to take my cock anymore?â
You blearily blink. âNo, no, I want to take your cock, alpha. Please give it to me.â
He chuckles at your compliance, eyes zeroing in on your glistening pussy. âYouâve been so good for me. Want your reward now?â
âYes, yes, alpha.â
He suddenly turns serious, brushing your hair away and cupping your cheeks.
âThis means forever. I want you to understand that.â
Itâs a little frightening â the thought of being bound to someone forever. However, youâre willing to do anything for Jaemin, and you know he loves you. Youâre blissfully happy at the thought of forever.
You nod, smiling. âWant to be with you, Jaem.â
He grins and presses a kiss to your lips. âGood girl.â
Your smile quickly turns into a gasp as he pushes you down on his cock. You scramble in his hold, fingers digging into his shoulders.
He shushes you softly. âItâs okay, pretty girl. I got you, trust me.â
Head thrown back and lips parted, you feel utterly fucked as Jaemin impales you. You werenât even aware your cunt could stretch this far for him, taking him in. The stretch doesnât hurt like you think it will, it feels surprisingly satisfying. You feel whole like this, finally connecting him to you.
Once he bottoms out, he gives you time to adjust. You donât even realize youâre crying until he wipes stray tears from your cheek.
âYouâre doing so well for me, sweet girl. Took my cock so well. I know youâll take my knot like a champ too.â
You feel drunk on him despite the fact that his cock could split you in half. You take a few more seconds to yourself before you nod, giving him the okay to move.
He starts out gently, even though you can see him clenching his teeth trying to control himself. You decide to push him.
You lean in and whisper in his ear. âFuck me good, alpha. Show me Iâm yours, and yours only.â
He throws you back down onto the bed, growling at your submission. You cry when he drills into you, showing no mercy any longer. His cock is tearing you apart and you welcome it with open arms. His fingers dig roughly into your scalp, his other hand groping your breast.
âYou like it when your alpha fucks you like this? You like it when I have control of you?â He practically growls at you, hips snapping into your thighs roughly. Your mouth hangs open, and if you were lucid, you would be embarrassed by the drool pooling at the side of your lips. He continues muttering obscenities at you, fueled by the feeling of your warm pussy wrapped around his cock. âGonna fuck you until you canât think of anyone else. Every time you touch yourself, youâre going to think about me. Only me. Iâm going to make sure everyone knows youâre mine, make sure youâre pretty and pregnant for me.â
His fingers move from your breast into your mouth, and you subconsciously suck on the digits.
He snickers. âLook at you. Such a pretty fuck toy for me, taking my cock so well. You were made to be fucked, sweet girl. Made to take my cock and my cock only.â
Youâre definitely out of coherent thoughts at this point. Jaemin flips you again, arching your back and you whimper at the ache. He drives into you harder and faster from behind, his balls slapping against your cunt in the most unholy way.
âAlpha, alpha, alpha,â you groan. âMy alpha. So good, my alpha, so good. So big.â
âNeed you to cum, sweet girl. Want to feel it. Give it to me, pretty girl.â
âAlpha, alpha,â you whimper, the coil in your stomach building and building. You soar when it snaps, and you swear you see white clouding your vision. You cry and cry, tears freely falling down your face as you clench around Jaemin.
You think you pass out for a few seconds. When you regain your strength, heâs flipped you on your side, gripping your ankle as he throws your foot over his shoulder. You let him do whatever he wants at this point, enjoying the way he presses against your clit every time he pushes in.
You can only hear parts of what heâs saying, a ringing sound still echoing in your ears.
âSo good- such a pretty cunt- want to fuck you forever- going to show you off- beautiful- fucking pretty pussy- such a good girl for me.â
âJ-Jaem,â you say, but you know he canât hear you anymore. You think you have another orgasm, but the pleasure is mixing together too fast. You blackout again, waking up moments later to find Jaemin still fucking you senseless.
Youâre on your back again with Jaemin hovering over you, pressing kisses down your neck. Heâs muttering praises still, hands digging into your sides.
âWant to feel you forever. So good for me, pretty girl. You ready to take my knot?â
You lazily comb your fingers through his hair, feeling exhausted. âPlease, alpha, give it to me.â
âYeah?â He groans, pressing harder into you. âWant me?â
âI want you, I want you,â you echo, the familiar sensation pulsing through your veins.
Heâs drilling faster now, pumping furiously into you as he chases his high. You think youâre screaming, but you canât be entirely sure. You feel bad for whoever lives on Jaeminâs floor.
When he cums, you swear heâs been holding it in for years. His cum splashes against your walls as he empties himself inside of you. You squeeze around him again, finishing another orgasm.
Itâs a few minutes later when you think itâs finally over. You start to relax, but the feeling is short lived. You sob when the base of Jaeminâs cock begins to swell, growing bigger and bigger.
âN-No, no, no, no-â
He shushes you. âItâs okay, pretty girl. You take my knot so well, I have so much cum for you.â
You swear youâve lost your mind when Jaemin does, in fact, give you even more of his cum. It starts to leak out of your cunt because of the sheer amount, and he urges you through it with soft kisses. When heâs finally done, you feel like youâve been fucked into the next century.
The only thing you can manage to say is, âYou canât fuck me again for three months, at least.â
He laughs at you and you try to throw him a serious look. He kisses your cheek.
âOh, silly girl. What did I tell you before? I chose you because youâre made for me. You honestly donât think Iâm going to stop fucking you now, do you?â
Your eyes widen at his confession, and you shriek when he thrusts into you, his cock still hard.
âSuch a pretty girl.â
Bagginshield fic list
Yeah, I decided to make one too because there are enough to cause me headaches and I'd like to have them somewhere organized. Please look at the tags before reading them!
Fix-it fics
Desperate magic by BeautifulFiction: Bilbo is left to tend Thorin as he hovers on the brink of death after the Battle of the Five Armies. Is love enough to save Erebor's king, or is this the last farewell?
Lay your troubles down by Avelera: An extended version of "the acorn scene." Bilbo sees his chance to snap Thorin out of his madness, and takes it.
The Riven Crown by BeautifulFiction: The aftermath of war is no laughing matter. Those who died must be honoured, those who are wounded must be healed, and those who remain need food and clothing, peace and sanctuary. With Thorin's life hanging in the balance, it is up to Bilbo and the rest of the Company to rule the rag-tag remnants of Erebor in his place. Then there is the matter of the gold... Can Bilbo save both king and kingdom, or is Erebor destined to fall deeper into ruin?
The Color of Possibility by lindoreda: When Bilbo puts himself between Thorin and Azog's blade, his mithril shirt protecting them both, it isn't long before some dwarves whisper that 'Oakenshield' might not be the best epithet for their king anymore. But for Bilbo, barred from Thorin's sight since the battle, this new epithet only adds to the sting. Spending his days caring for the recovering princes, Bilbo wonders how much more of this he can take, not suspecting his place at the center of a silent divide in the company.
Homesick by Margo_Kim: Five years after they've reclaimed Erebor, Thorin is sick of home, Bilbo is just sick, and neither is handling the situation ideally.
The Road Delivered Us Home by keelywolfe: In the years since Bilbo left Erebor, he has lost his respectability, gained a nephew, and gotten on with life at Bag End. He'd left aside adventure for the comforts and peace of his little Hobbit hole, and for the love of a child who needed him. Though perhaps, adventures can yet find him.
Notices in the Paper by YamBits: Bilbo returns to the Shire after his adventure, newly married, and newly homeless, after his two year absence allowed the Sackville-Bagginses to obtain Bag End. Bilbo and Thorin go to the Tooks for help, and find newly orphaned Frodo Baggins, also looking for a home.
A Royal Guardianship by ladyoakenshields: When Bilbo and Thorin return to the Shire for a sabbatical during Yuletide, they find a reason to retire the throne in Erebor sooner than expected.
The Shire's gems by awkwarng3: Thorin, Bilbo, and Frodo move to the Shire after raising Frodo in Erebor, and Frodo makes a friend.
Time travel fix-it fics
An expected journey by MarieJacquelyn: For years Bilbo has written about his adventures and told stories about his dealings with dwarves and dragons. To most it seemed like fanciful nonsense but to Bilbo it was all very real. A weight followed him home from his travels, one called regret. Now in his final moments Bilbo has a choice to make â go quietly into deathâs embrace or go back again and face all the fear and pain for the chance to make things right? Of course, change is a fickle thing and not everything can be done again as Bilbo is about to find out. In the end, it may not only be salvation that heâs fighting for.
Bilbo Baggins, warrior of the Valar by Pallalalo: Bilbo raised his eyebrows. âAnd youâve come to the Shire to look for this someone? My, Gandalf, I wonder if you know Hobbits at all. They would tell you that adventures are nasty, disturbing, uncomfortable things. That they would make you late for dinner.â Bilbo recalled his own words perfectly. It had been something he and Gandalf had looked back on with bittersweet laughter. This Gandalf however noticed his exact words. âWould they now? And what about you, mhm? What would you tell me about adventures?â #The Valar send Bilbo back in time, to the day where Gandalf asks him to join in an adventure. After living a lifetime of regret and suffering, he vows to change things for the better. For Thorin. For Frodo. But will he succeed?
I'll die to care for you by thehufflepuffhobbit: His gaze landed on Mahal's eyes once more. "You did your best, Thorin." It was tempting to look away; he wanted to deny that with everything he had. It certainly didn't feel as though falling into Gold Sickness and then dying was doing his best. Mahal smirked, as though he knew Thorin's desire to contradict him, and pinched his cheek before walking over to a table. "Aye, I didn't think you would believe me. I'm not lying, it certainly could have gone better. More according to my plan, but I know you really did try." "Your plan?" He didn't know if he should ask, really. Knowing that his Maker had set a course for him, he didn't want to think about the ways he had done everything wrong. There were too many examples of mistakes in his long life, too many opportunities that he had missed that had probably been planned for him from the beginning. Or:Mahal feels like Thorin fucked up his legacy and gives him a do over.
Darker times ahead by Reach4theSky: Bilbo is sailing to the Undying Lands but wary of letting go of the guilt that has been with him for many decade. His most sincerest wish is to go back and change what was done. Before reaching the lands of peace and healing, he dies aboard the ship and finds that his wish is being granted, not because he is the one to wish it but because this is the dwarves last chance to escape a fate of eternal waiting. He finds that not only is he going to be sent back to his younger body, but so is the entire Company of Thorin Oakenshield. Time is a fickle thing and not all the members have their memories returned to them at the same time. The journey on becomes interesting as the dwarves slowly remember and fight for themselves and their kin, yet new hurdles are thrown at them when they realize that more people remember than expected...
Of an arcane binding by Salvia_G: An inexplicable magic ties Bilbo Baggins, hobbit of the Shire, to Thorin, dwarven prince of Erebor.
Legends by DomesticGoddess: The fellowship has set out on its noble quest to destroy the ring and put an end to the threat that is Sauron! Just set out really, barely left the gates of Imladris, but things are going smoothly enough so far. That is until the two most unlikely party crashers fall upon their little fellowship. Uncle Bilbo and the Legendary Thorin Oakenshield?! Frodo just wants to know what's going on but the two of them won't stop hollering at each other long enough for anyone to get a word in edgewise. Suddenly, their little group is joined by Frodo's two biggest heroes and he discovers there was a lot more to Uncle Bilbo's stories than he realized.
Beside myself by bliboboggins: "What are you doing? Just who do you think you are?" Startled, Bilbo turned around slowly. And there, in a familiar patchwork dressing gown, brandishing a fire poker wildly about, was... Bilbo.
Erebor never fell au fics
The hearth doesn't make the home by Moonrose91: For things Bilbo could not change, he was condemned to a life of isolation, with the belief that none could love him. And then a Dwarf came to Hobbiton.
Clarity of vision by Mithen: In a Middle-Earth where Erebor never fell, a shadow remains in the heart of the Lonely Mountain. Bilbo Baggins finds himself drawn reluctantly into a quest that will lead him across the continent--from Bree to Lake Evendim to the icy North and beyond--with a party of five dwarves searching for an artifact that will cure the ailing King ThrĂłr.
Ghivashel by mdseiran: The last thing Bilbo expects when he stays up late one night is company. The strange dwarf and his companion crash into his life and prove unexpected saviours. But the dwarf seems to think he will be joining them on their travels, and Bilbo has no such intentions.
The Song of My Heart by DomesticGoddess: After a failed attempt of trying to carve out a new home in the Blue Mountains for his people, Thorin finds himself beseeching the Hobbit Thain and his council for a place for his people in their bountiful land. An agreement is struck and plans in the works for integrating his people into their land. The only condition being an arranged marriage between himself and one of their family heads. A small price to pay to see his people safe and well fed. Unfortunately, heâs to marry the most disagreeable hobbit in all the Shire who also seems to hold a personal grudge against him. If only he could figure out why his new betrothed hates him so much.
Oak and Mistletoe by HildyJ: After a life dominated by a strange form of sickness, Thorin is sent to the Shire to seek a cure only Bilbo Baggins can offer.
KarkĂ»n shukula - A Cinderella AU by harrypanther: When the Prince of the Shire visits the Kingdom of Erebor, there is great excitement. There are hopes he will choose to marry one of the Royal Family, cementing an alliance that would secure food supplies for the dwarven Kingdom and gain new allies. All eligible dwarves are expected to attend a series of Balls. Unknown to the guests, there is a third royal child, manoeuvred out by his ambitious stepmother, for whom this may be his last chance of restoring his fortunes and escaping his fateâŠ
Alone this Yuletide by Emsiecat: 'Alone this Yuletide? Irritated with prying and nosey family members? I am an out of work blacksmith currently trying to make my way by any means necessary that does not involve my resorting to thievery (prisons are most uncomfortable, I've unfortunate first hand experience). However, if you would like me to be your strictly platonic companion for any social function, but have me pretend that we are in a serious courtship, so as to torment your family and ward off unwanted suitors then I am more than obliging...' After becoming increasingly irritated by overtures of romance from various Shire residents following the death of his mother four years ago, Bilbo is more than ready to resort to desperate measures. That is, up to and including pretending to be in a serious relationship with a certain surly blacksmith currently inhabiting the Bindbale Woods. It's a good idea after all; all they have to do is pretend to be in love over the Yuletide period and Bilbo's family and suitors will surely leave him alone after that. It's perfect! And nothing can possibly go wrong, right? Certainly nothing as preposterous as falling for one another for real...
Nothing gold can stay by perkynurples: Bilbo Baggins led a rather peaceful life, thank you very much, until an old acquaintance decided to turn it upside down, and he found himself agreeing to take a job thatâs⊠letâs say not exactly up his alley, and might eventually cost him a little more than his treasured cozy lifestyle. Who would have thought tutoring a slightly menacing monarchâs more than slightly overbearing nephew could prove to be such an adventure?
Love-In-Idleness by perkynurples: Taking Bilbo Baggins, a successful movie actor who is only just getting used to the perks and intricacies of becoming A Face People Want To See, and putting him together with Thorin Oakenshield, with his very traditional (read: slightly backwards) ideas about what constitutes Real Art and Real Talent, might very well be viewed as just some clotheadâs idea of a joke. But there are jokes, and then there are carefully calculated risks the size of controversial reproductions of classic Shakespearean plays - for Bilbo, it is the chance of a lifetime to prove himself to all those who have ever deemed him too one-dimensional to even attempt stage, while Thorin has the opportunity to get out of the rut thatâs been hindering his career for so long now, and shine in a role worthy of his talent once again. That is if the two learn how to share the same space for more than ten minutes without wanting to tear each otherâs hair out. The course of true love never did run smooth, after allâŠ
Candid by northerntrash: Thorin wasn't entirely sure why there was a six-foot candid photograph of him hanging in this exhibition, but he was going to wring the neck of whoever had put it there. In which Bilbo is a photographer, Thorin an accidental model, and Gandalf just likes to make trouble for everyone.
How the west was won and where it got us by stickman: Bilbo is a harried 1st year British literature Ph.D. (early 20th century fiction) who happens to have an interest in spatial narrative structures, a lack of time-management skills, and a tiny apartment with a lot of books and very little furniture. Heâs stressed, always, and doesn't quite know where he belongs. He tells himself that really, this is, in fact, what he wants to be doing. But sometimes, as much as he loves books, he gets an urge to do something with his hands. Thorin is a disgruntled M.Arch. 1 in his last year who canât be arsed to shave and frightens his students, and, frankly, his profs, but his work is top-notch so no one can really say much. They can, however, bully him into running a hands-on design workshop on Saturday mornings, which is complete crap, because heâs used to drinking his Friday nights into oblivion so showing up at Milstein at 7:45 the next morning and trying to teach in a room of wall-to-wall windows as the sun rises is not at the top of his list. Besides, no one ever shows up. Except one morning, someone does. [graduate school AU]
Butterfly effect by eyra: Yoga wasnât for him. Yoga was for interesting people. Luminous people; people who took gap years and spoke a foreign language. People who ate lentils and burned incense and had fantastic, colourful friends with fantastic, colourful lives full of travel and silent retreats and those baggy trousers with elephants on them. Yoga was decidedly not for people like Bilbo, who wore cardigans and ate beans on toast and whose linguistic capabilities stretched only as far as a rusty Spanish A-Level. Just your regular story of boy meets yoga instructor.
Remover of the obstacles by MistakenMagic: "Dis often chided her older brother for being a misanthropist. She did it so often it had become a term of endearment. It was true that Thorin struggled with people; he struggled to form and maintain relationships. Dr. Grey had diagnosed him with this and Thorin hadnât the heart to tell him this wasnât a symptom of his PTSD, it was a symptom of his personality. He exercised a sense of apathy with almost everyone he met⊠But Bilbo was different. Thorin actually found himself wanting to know more about him."
Color outside the lines by andquitefrankly: Kindergarten has just gotten significantly better. Just ask Thorin, who's got the biggest crush on the new kid in class, Bilbo Baggins. With the help of his friends, Thorin knows that he can take back the swings from the 1st graders, show up the K-1 class in the school pageant, and win the heart of one curly haired boy. Yup. Kindergarten is going to be a year to remember.
Bran' New Suit by pibroch (littleblackdog): Andrew's description had been sufficient to recognize himâ a riot of honey brown curls, short in stature, a well-favoured face with expressive featuresâ but it hadn't quite been enough to prepare Tom for the sharp, almost painful tug in his gut at the sight of the man. They had never met before, to the best of Tom's recollection, but there was something eerily and inexplicably familiar about him all the same.
Different species au fics
I've grown a hedge around my heart by pibroch (littleblackdog): "Thorin was the essence of so many Buckland oddities, distilled into one misfortunate young hobbit, much to his infinite embarrassment. Built like a stork, his father had said once, in an example of Thrain Brandybuckâs usual tactless humour. All beak and legs." Thorin Brandybuck, just recently come of age, still lives in his familyâs smial in Buckland, with his parents and two younger siblings. Thorin is an odd duck amongst his relations and neighbours-- unsociable, grumpy, shy, and awkward. And beyond that, he looks rather strange even for a Bucklander, strongly favouring the thick, dark haired build of his Stoorish blood. It defies all sense and reason why Bilbo Baggins, an exemplar of all the respectable traits Thorin lacked, would ever desire a friendship with him. Bilbo, as Thorin discovers, is not always as sensible as he appears.
In which the dwarves are satyrs for reasons by HiddenKitty What the title says basically.
Bride of the demon king by DomesticGoddess: Thorin is King of the demons, a beast-like race feared by humans. Ever since the demons and humans formed a truce years ago, the humans have sent a young human every year as a tribute to the King of demons. Thorin is tired of having to deal with the tribute that has long since lost its meaning. The only tribute he'd be interested in is the boy he met fifteen years ago on the border of the demon and human realms. Despite his fantasies, Thorin knows the chances of ever seeing the boy again are slim to none, until they're not.
Lost He Wandered Under Leaves by serenbach: Thorin son of Thrain is a struggling blacksmith descended from a fallen line of kings. In an attempt to provide for his family over the winter, he reluctantly accepts an impossible sounding task - to hunt down an enchanted deer that lives in the Old Forest that borders the Shire, and make armour and weapons from its hide and antlers. He never expected to succeed. And he certainly never expected what he found to change his life so completely.
A Dryad's Tale by Bilbo Baggins by Moongazer12: Bilbo is a dryad (think little sibling to ents). Long ago a curse was placed upon him from destroying one of the rings of power. Whenever he touches someone with his bare skin he will make them insane. But despite this, he and Gandalf have gone on many adventures to help protect Middle Earth (What was the point to destroying the ring if something else destroyed it instead?) Gandalf has called on him once again to help on a quest, Bilbo just hopes that they read his amendments to the contract.
The quest but with a twist au fics
King, come at the red morning by Tawabids: Bilbo has heard fairytales of the lost prince of the dwarves, Thorin son of Thrain, who disappeared the day Smaug attacked the Lonely Mountain. But he does not believe in fairytales until he comes across the dwarf sleeping in the depths of Erebor, and kisses him back to life. Now Thorin - a hundred and fifty years out of his time - has to confront a world in which his city is empty, his people scattered, his baby brother Frerin is king, two nephews he's never met are missing in action, and a war is brewing right on his doorstep. And as if that wasn't complicated enough he's trapped in the body of an old man and falling stupidly in love with a gossipy, grudging little hobbit.
When the sun rises by Harry1981: Bilbo Baggins of Bag End was not a very respectable Hobbit. No respectable Hobbit had a sword and crossbow hanging in their home, nor did they have Dwarves as family. But Bilbo Baggins did, and all of Shire knew of his husband, blacksmith Thorin Oakenshield. When Bilbo comes home to find his Husband earlier than expected, he learns of a quest to reclaim Erebor. It is a death mission. Bilbo knows that Dwarves are stubborn creatures, and none more than Thorin himself. But nobody said that Bilbo himself was any less stubborn. So he will follow his dearest husband across all of Middle Earth, through plains and mountains and forests, all while hiding the true nature of their relationship (Dwarven politics never helped anyone), brushing off some old wounds (and getting new ones) and finding out new things about the dwarf Bilbo calls husband (and his extended family). Nobody ever said love was easy, after all.
Small, but fierce by DomesticGoddess: As a result of a magical mishap during the trip to the lonely mountain, Bilbo is reverted to a wee little hobbitling. Only in body, of course. His adult mind is still very aware of the indignity of it all (seriously! He doesn't need to be coddled, carried, and fed like a child). It turns out, dwarves love children and there is nothing cuter than Hobbit children. Bilbo soon realizes that he can get away with just about anything in his babyish form and starts taking full advantage of it. Even the grumpy brooding king can't deny the angelic little creature anything he desires (and Bilbo's going to milk that for all it's worth).
Your song like a home in my heart by Nennvial: In Middle Earth, all creatures have a soulmate. Not all have some, but if they do, it is a bond nothing can break, not even death. The more famous story of such a bound was the story of Bren and Luthien, who even defied detath. The way someone can find out that the other is oneâs soulmate is through song: when they meet and hear the voice of the other, a song sings in their heart, which feels like home and makes them complete. They may refuse it if they wish to do so, but they hence risk a life of bitter looniness. Thorin Oakenshield and Bilbo Baggins are soulmates, but they must admit it to themselves throughout their journey to Erebor.
To Dungeons Deep (And Caverns Old) by KingUndertheMountain: Bilbo Baggins was not your average hobbit. Of course, he had the wonderfully groomed and well-taken-care-of hairy feet like every other one of his race, yes, but he was not like other hobbits. He was cursed. Or, as the witch who gave him the enchantment put it, was âgiftedâ. She had given him the âgiftâ of obedience â whenever there was a direct command given to him, for example âcook a large mealâ or âtake a walkâ, he could not disobey. Not without a lot of pain and eventual submission.
The world is sleeping (my world is you) by katheneverwrites (mandolinearts): I asked Persephone, âHow could you grow to love him? He took you from flowers to a kingdom where not a single living thing can grow.â Persephone smiled, âMy darling, every flower on your earth withers. What Hades gave me was a crown made for the immortal flowers in my bones.â - Nikita Gill ---âWhat do you mean, my friend?â There is a line of thought that surfaces in Gandalfâs mind, but he drowns it before it can take root. Surely not. But Bilboâs chuckle sets him on edge. The small, gentle god of harvest, nature, and flowers sits up straighter, and in his crown of flowers there is a wire of strong metal, his cloak is suddenly not colorful anymore but the deepest black and he is terrifying, horrific, powerful - âI married Thorin Oakenshield, King Under the World.â
Of seasons by northerntrash: As far as he could tell, he had been kidnapped, which in itself made this week more than a little unusual. In which Bilbo steals away the Lord of Death, and Thorin can't quite bring himself to stay angry about it.
Warm up by paranoid_fridge: On one of their walks, Bilbo tumbles into a stream. They make it back to Bag End and Bilbo demands Thorin warm him up.
Royal Blue And Crimson Red by Mistofstars: Here's what happened before and after Bilbo accidentally eavesdrops on Gandalf and Elrond at night in Rivendell, as they discuss Thorin's quest and his family's history. Oh, and Thorin and Bilbo share a room, of course ;)
I was young when I left home by Margo_Kim: There was a pity clapper somewhere in the third row. Thorin finished his fourth song to polite applause from the people who noticed that the song was finished, but within the smattering of claps was someone beating his hands together like he was trying to rhythmically kill a fly. There was usually one of those, the kind who notices that no one else is paying attention and so is determined to compensate for that regardless of how they feel about the actual music. Thorin ignored him. It was easy to do soâhe'd always hated looking at the audience when the singing was done.
A matter of buttons by StupidFatPenguin: âYour shirt,â says Thorin, quite out of the blue, and Bilbo looks down his front to see if there is a spot of tea or jam or anything equally embarrassing spilled on it. He is relieved to find nothing of the sort and looks up at the dwarf with an eyebrow raised in question. Thorin sits mute, his still-smoking pipe forgotten in his hand. He looks on for long moments still, seems almost lost to a thought before he shifts and lifts his gaze to meet Bilboâs inquiring face. âIt is familiar to me. Did you not wear this on the eve we met?â In which Bilbo and Thorin re-enact the evening they met.
The ladder by Milliethekitty27: Inspired from a post made by wheeloffortune-design on tumblr. Tired of his lonely kitchen in Yavanna's Garden, Bilbo Baggins wonders if the dwarven love of being underground is true in death. If so, maybe his dwarves are living (ha ha) under the very land Bilbo is weeding. With that thought, Bilbo goes and asks Hamfast for a shovel.
Love hobbit by HybridOwl: Bilbo Baggins considers himself a bit of a cock up, all things considered. He never made it out of his small highway adjacent town, can't seem to stop chain-smoking, and overall has more to talk about with the plants in his shop than 90% of all the rest of Middle Earth. So when he's reading the morning paper and a love note that can't be for anyone but him pops up, he's pretty sure - almost positive, really - that he's being made fun of. "TO the chain-smoking little stud who collects two metros from Gamgee's Goods every morning, will you be my love hobbit? - Bearded Biker." (heavily inspired by tumblr posts)
The Second Time by authoressjean; Sebastian Moran can't pull the trigger on John Watson to save his own hide, and what the hell is it with the doctor, anyway? Then Gandalf shows up, meddlesome wizard, and reminds him none too gently of his past life: as Thorin Oakenshield, leader of a company that had once included a small hobbit named Bilbo Baggins. One that looked decidedly like John Watson. And this would be the perfect chance to make things right with Bilbo the way he really hadn't been able to before he died, and that's when Gandalf tells him John doesn't remember being Bilbo, and to leave him alone. Right. Like that's going to happen.
And sow a star divided in us by MistakenMagic: Short summary: Gays in space! Longer summary: After his first successful solo mission, Jedi Knight Bilbo Baggins, trained by High Council member and full-time nuisance, Master Gandalf, returns to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. During an excursion to the sparring arena, he meets a group of Dwarven Jedi from Ered Luin, a mountainous planet located in the Outer Rim. Young padawans, Fili and Kili, are full of curiosity at this strange, barefoot Jedi, but Master Thorin, who appears to have the personality of a rancor and mental shields like blast doors, is less than impressed.
Comics you should definitely check
Every work by rutobuka, seriously they're criminally cute and they're not still favored by everyone without reason.
Retelling the Hobbit by Mellow_Comics: Bilbo has never been good at telling the "true" story of what happened on his journey to the Lonely Mountain. Now he's trying to turn the tale of his quest into a lighthearted children's book-- a bedtime story for his young nephew Frodo. But what really happened on his journey? And how did it actually affect him? This is a comic adaptation/retelling of the Hobbit! It's framed as a bedtime story that Bilbo is telling a younger Frodo.
For now these are some of my personal favourites! However, I'm sure my list will grow since my reading list has some gems still waiting for me to read, so be certain that there will be a part 2 of this list!
Saph I hope you feel better! I really liked the VM Snow White you just posted, but could you also please do the same prompt but with M9 boys including Molly? If youâre not feeling up to it thatâs fine too!
Thank you! The meds are beginning to do their job luckily. I'm glad you liked the last one. I blinked, my hand slipped and now it's here. Prepare for some angst. Hope you enjoy! đ
(Caleb)
Caleb had always known his past would come to haunt him. He was prepared for it. Prepared to take the hit, take responsibility for everything and heâd face his past be that with or without the people he loves. Part of him, once he got used to having these fools around, having you around, wanted it to be on his own, to protect them and protect you. To not have any more lives lost in the grand scheme. The people he loves becoming collateral would be unacceptable. But you had become collateral in the grand scheme of things.
When it became clear to his enemies he was a bit more attached to you than the others, they took this weakness and exploited it. They pushed his buttons before, using you as a tool, verbal bait even, but he never fell for it. His reluctancy to act on his feelings, to keep them to himself instead, were the very thing he hoped would keep those loose ends from latching onto you. His love is a curse, the objects of his desire always to be torn away from him no matter how hard he tries to prevent it. Heâs lost you to that same curse. Not lost. Almost lost.
Youâve been cursed, your conscious mind separated from your unconscious body. Simple healing spells wouldnât do the trick here. This curse holds no roots in the divine. Heâs spent days researching and that much he could confirm. This curse would take an arcane approach. Something he prides himself in to be his specialty. Lucky you. Lucky him. He had the others bring all books, ancient scrolls and other sources of knowledge brought to him, along with a wide variety of components once heâd made a significant dent in the research matter, assuring him this would have the greatest chances of success.
Itâs not the soft canopy bed with the plush pillows from the fairytales youâre placed on. Instead you lay on a wooden table, inscribed with all sorts of arcane sigils. Nor do you look like some angelic peaceful being. Your brow is furrowed in discomfort, your hands balled into fists at your sides. Caleb moves a brush against areas of exposed skin, painting symbols to match with precision and care, afraid to even make a single mistake, triple checking every mark. He speaks the incantations while incorporating the components varying from precious gems crushed and whole, herbs and incense. And then he waits. He doesnât expect the effects to be immediate, often with these magics it is not and he knows that but that doesnât get rid of the impatience and fear.
âHow I long to hear your voice again. I know this will work but that doesnât ease away the sliver of doubt. What if⊠What if⊠Thatâs what I keep asking myself. I know itâs stupid.â Caleb wipes an hand over his brow as he pulls up a chair and sits at your side, elbows leaning on the table careful to avoid any sigils just in case.
âIt also faced me with the harsh reality that I held off telling you how I feel. It looks so stupid now in hindsight because what good did it do anyone. In the end you still ended up paying for my mistakes. I was stupid to push you away, try to convince you your own feelings were unreciprocated. I know I didnât have you fooled in the slightest but to know I could have loved you, it makes me feel like I am to blame for wasting that opportunity and possibly shortening our time together. The thought of losing you before having given you my love will forever be my greatest regret.â
Caleb watches the muscle of your hand unclench and relax. He hears a deep intake of breath and staring at your face heâs met with your smile, one filled with love as he helps you sit up. All is good once more.
(Fjord)
Fjordâs drenched to the bone, out of breath, anger running through him like heâs never experienced. Still heâs unsure if his anger is directed at the one responsible for your eternal slumber or at himself for making a ballsy move that didnât pay off in the slightest and in fact backfired in a worse way he could have ever imagined. He played a game of chicken with Ukâotoa and lost. Heâd have been fine by letting someone else pay the price for him. Why should he care about some stranger becoming victim to the leviathan? The one who paid the price, became the victim to his actions didnât end up being a stranger. It had to be you of all people hadnât it?
Ukâotoa must have been watching his dreams, even his waking actions if that were possible and have seen his infatuation with you. When the leviathan threatened Fjord in another briny dream of his mentioning your name he had called bullshit. The snake had never been able to reach out to anyone it didnât already have some kind of grasp on. Little did he know Ukâotoa had just that. Just enough of a sliver through him, and the Cloven Crystal to get to you.
So there Fjord sits at your bedside. Youâre just as drenched as he is, hair dripping, skin glowing in the candle light of the room reflected off the water particles. Your lips are tinted blue, a redness around your eyes, your skin is cold. The sleep youâre in is a state of perpetual drowning and Fjord knows what it feels like, to drown. He can only hope youâre spared that pain. He doesnât think heâll be able to forgive himself if you are tortured like so because of his actions. Clasping your hand between both of his he runs his fingers over your knuckles. He bows his head. It still feels so wrong to not have you respond to his touch. So wrong.
âI want you to know that I am to blame for your fate. Iâm about to do a very stupid thing to make it right. I know youâd tell me not to but I canât sit by and watch you suffer like this. Iâve tried everything. Iâve begged and bargained. Iâve shouted at the skies but I got no reply. Everything comes up empty and I see no other choice than to do this. It might sound stupid but I came to ask for your forgiveness.â Fjord pauses. Usually he would have gotten a reply. He would sell his soul for just having you tell him everything will be alright. Itâs a good thing heâs about to sell it for so much more than that. Itâs worth it. Itâs worth having you alive and well.
âI wonât ask for forgiveness for what Iâm about to do because I will never regret it. I ask only you may one day forgive me for what I might become. I need you to know I love you and did, will do all of this out of love. Thatâs why I hope youâll never see me again after I give myself to Ukâotoa. I canât bare to watch that affection in your eyes being replaced by hatred, but most of all disappointment. I hoped to be worthy of your love and I will always regret never having truly experienced it.â Fjordâs voice cracks slightly. He studies your face, as if to ingrain every detail into his memory, as if he thinks he might never see it again.
âIâm afraid. Iâm so deadly afraid.â Fjord whimpers pressing a kiss to the back of your hand before he lets go. He checks his supplies, taking out the Cloven Crystal, glaring at the orb intensely cursing the thing to oblivion. Coughs pull him out of his staring match with the crystal. Your body moves, leaning over the edge of the bed vomiting up brine. Fjord drops the orb and his belongings running over to you and helping you gather your bearings until youâre no longer chocking on sea water.
âYou better not do what I think youâre planning with that orb or so help me Storm Lord, I will drown you myself.â Fjord canât do anything but laugh despite the very real threat on his life as you pull him into your embrace.
(Caduceus)
Caduceus isnât bothered by death. Death is part of life as much as living is. Itâs inevitable. Every soul will move on, leaving its vessel for the earth, the fire or the wild things to bring forth something new. What does very much bother him are perversions of death, those who try to cheat death, upset the natural balance, maim and manipulate that what is and should be. He hates it with a passion and seeks to rectify it, return the world to that balance when faced with it. Thatâs where you come in. You much like him have a respect and understanding of life and death similar to his own. Very few people understand that. Very few people do not fear the end when they see it coming. Youâre one of those very few people.
You understand Caduceus on a different level, in his sentiment and mannerisms while others may think him strange. Not that he cares if people do, youâve been his filter in the big shiny new world past the borders of his grove. Youâve been his safety net, his grounding force, his safe haven when the world seems against him and he thinks his senses might be wrong. The Wild Mother must have gently blown her winds to bring you together.
Thatâs why it seems so wrong youâre affected by this darkness having taken hold over your body, leaving you in a state of not entirely alive nor dead. Resurrection has been futile as much as draining your life and allowing you to move to the care of the Wild Mother herself. Youâre trapped and thatâs why Caduceus fears what would happen should you die. Heâs seen what this perversion of life and death has done to his home, the forests surrounding it and the creatures living in it. Heâll do everything in his power to prevent that from happening to you.
Caduceus has put your body through the typical burial rites and rituals, preserving what he can by using wards and the divine blessings granted to him by his goddess, sending her prayers of your recovery but you appear to be even beyond her reach now. He moves a damp cloth across your arms and face, brushing aside your hair, humming to himself until heâs done, moving on to clean the room around you, getting rid of the dust, placing things back where they belong and replacing the decayed flowers with fresh ones. Caduceus gathers his tea, preparing a cup for himself as he watches you.
âCan you show me how theyâre doing?â The wind grows cold. He knew that would be the answer but still he could hope maybe that answer could change.
âAre they in pain?â The wind grows warm but then cold again. You were, but not anymore. It seems that the new wards heâs put up are doing their job. Thatâs good.
âIs there a cure?â The gentle breeze disappears. She doesnât know then. This goes even beyond the goddess herself but it doesnât mean itâs impossible. Caduceus will keep hope, though it is dwindling fast, for your sake heâll have hope. Heâs always spoken to the dead before and while youâre not really dead, thereâs a strange comfort to something that feels so final.
âHey. Iâd ask you how youâre doing but thatâs not gonna work now, is it? Donât worry. Youâre going to be fine. I know you are. Youâve managed to keep me alive with the others for much longer than Iâve been taking care of you like this. I think weâre going to be fine. I know youâre here but I still miss you. Calliope makes for terrible company watching things unfurl between the others. Sheâs too much of a hopeless romantic. You forgot to tell me the recipe to that special brew of yours. Iâve been trying to recreate it but I havenât been able to. I think what Iâm trying to say is, I could really do with having my best friend back. Thatâd be nice.â
Caduceus sips his tea, face devoid of his usual dopy smile. A sudden breeze hits through the window, blowing it open. A few lighter weight and loose items go flying but the thud of a heavier one is clear to hear. Caduceus closes the window and feels something solid hit his boot. Itâs a crystal from the ones surrounding the grove. He picks it up, feeling the warmth run through it. The breeze directs towards you and he feels himself walking over to your body. The crystal calls to you and when it touches you your body runs with energy, pulsing, like youâve been forcibly pulled back to this world. You look around eyes wide breathing heavy.
âHey.â Caduceus smiles. âI made tea.â
(Mollymauk)
Maybe pretending you and him were some high born assholes was a questionable decision. Taking on an invite directed at the said people you were impersonating even more so, and stealing, sorry, borrowing without asking, some things from their summer cottage to swim in luxuries, an out right terrible idea when these people happen to be very well connected.
So when these fancy folk came back to the cottage earlier than expected, the two of you had grabbed what you could before making your grand escape, chased by their private guards until you lost them. A safe distance away you set up camp. Time to inspect your findings before returning to the carnival. Your eye for valuables had always been much more keen than Mollyâs and your appraisals usually spot on. It was only natural he would let you do your thing but heâd still help you.
Particularly proud of getting some ornate jewellery box Molly had pried it open and revealed the jackpot. But of course you couldnât just sell recognisable jewellery as is and you couldnât keep such a thing on you very long. So of course you went to work, prying the stones from their settings. A particular necklace was giving you trouble, not even your tools being able to pry it out, you even broke one so you left that one for last.
The two of you had argued, eventually setting on just smashing the stone with the pommel of Mollyâs scimitar, the broken gem still providing plenty of pay and not being as recognisable in peaces. So you held the necklace across a stone while he smashed it. When it did a spark hit, next thing he knew you were on the ground, your hands burned where you held the precious metal. At first he thought you were simply knocked out but when you didn't wake up he grew worried. Splashing water in your face, shaking you, lifting your legs, nothing got you to wake up so instead he carried you and the jewellery back to the carnival. Two days and still you didnât wake up. It became clear this bloody gem was cursed when dark veins started crawling up your skin as the days passed.
Since this was technically on him, Molly took care of you. He makes quite a doting nurse when he wants to be but never without an inappropriate comment or two. It was quite strange to not hear you laugh at or scold him for these comments. Nevertheless heâd fluff up the pillow beneath your head, provide you an extra blanket when the night was cold, tell you stories, or simply the events of the day, the people who came to the carnival, some things he lifted from peopleâs pockets and so on. Molly has to say heâs ashamed to admit heâd got frustrated with your unresponsiveness or rather the fact you still hadnât woken up and there was nothing the others could do for you. A healer would still be a week or so out.
âYou know, while Iâve really begun getting used to these little one-sided conversations and your lack of judgement at some of my more terrible decisions I really prefer sharing them with you in the moment. Iâve gotten caught by the guards twice now and without you, Gustav is getting a bit sick of bailing me out. I miss our little flirtations. I miss your sometimes wrong opinions, though youâd say theyâre proven facts. I miss your company. I think our time apart has given me time to reflect how much you truly mean to me and how much I need you in my life.â Molly leans on his elbow as he studies your face unmoving. You look so peaceful and asleep but heâd much rather get lost in your eyes when youâre awake.
âI laughed at you when you told me the most valuable thing in the world anyone could ever give another is their heart but I think I know what that means now. Iâll offer you mine if you will have it. So please, come back and make sure my head doesnât get up too high into the clouds or I might just float away.â Molly leans back looking at the ceiling of the tent with a sigh. Heâs pulled out of his mind by a snicker.
âA dramatic confession of love to the unconscious target of your affections? And you call me cliche.â Molly looks at your face, eyes still closed but smug grin clear on your face. He pokes your side making you jump.
âYou are insufferable.â
Ethan Winters (Resident Evil Biohazard) x Reader (Gender Neutral)
Warnings: Spoilers for Resident Evil 8:Village, Swearing, Mentions of injury
Genre: Angsty Fluff, Comfort
Summary: Following the final battle in the Dimitrescu Castle, Ethan is surprised to stumble upon a person who witnessed the whole debacle, offering him a safe place to patch up his wounds and rest for a little while.
Requested by Anon. Hi dear! Thank you so much for your request! So sorry youâve had to wait so long but here it finally is! Hope you come across it and enjoy reading it! Love, Vy â€
âThat was...something else.â Ethan Winters mutters to himself as he limps his way out of the Dimitrescu Castle which is now vacant in terms of residence - his doing. He killed Alcina Dimitrescu and her daughters, all arguably in self defense and with little guilt to follow. However, plenty of traumaâs definitely attached to him following the horrific events he had to go through and the things he had to see between the walls of those luxurious rooms hiding dark secrets of the vampires who took pleasure in torturing people, and wreaking havoc over the villagers who feared them.
âAt least they wonât hurt anyone any longer.â He tells himself, giving the monster of a structure one final look before he continues back towards the center of the village where heâs gonna rethink what heâs got to do next, gather his bearings, take a breath and keep going. He has no other option but to keep going, he wonât allow himself to quit no matter what danger he faces. In his mind, heâs convinced himself that heâs already seen the worst, itâs easier on him that way, it suppresses the fear heâd feel otherwise. The last thing he wants is to think whatâs in store for him ahead, heâd rather focus on whatâs up to him to do next.
âAnd we canât thank you enough.â
The sudden presence of an unfamiliar voice startles him, causing him to whip out his gun and point it in the direction it came from. However, he quickly finds his deadly tight grip loosening ever so slightly because he realizes heâs pointing the barrel at a very human-looking and seemingly harmless person.
âWho are you? Whoâs âweâ?â Ethan still refuses to let his guard down though, just cause it may not be a life or death situation, doesnât mean this person wonât bring him trouble and Lord knows thatâs the last thing he needs right now.
On instinct, the person takes a step back, âI speak on the behalf of all the remaining villagers. I mean, it was only a matter of time before we too became victims in the Dimitrescu Castle basement. I was next, actually, but the commotion you created allowed for me to escape. I owe you my life, foreigner.â The speak hurriedly and in a hushed tone, as if the fear of their torturers overhearing them still lives within them despite the monsters being deceased.
âGlad I could help you.â He nods curtly, remaining at the distance of seven feet between them, âMy nameâs Ethan Winters by the way.â
They give him the tiniest of smiles, âY/N L/N, pleased to meet you.â Their gaze gives him a quick onceover, assessing the damage the horrors of the castle have inflicted on him. Their eyes widen in shock at the many bleeding wounds all over his body but what appears to rattle them most is the severe injury thatâs causing his limp as well as the missing finger - a poorly wrapped would that has surprisingly not started getting infected yet. âLook, I know you donât trust me, but I donât trust you to take care of yourself either. I live in that windmill over there in the outskirts, come with me, Iâll help you with...well, with all that. You seem rather hopeless at medical care.â
While he could refuse their offer, he wouldnât be able to deny the fact that theyâre right - he knows the basics of first aid, but his injuries are far too gone for simple first aid, especially when taken into account that he doesnât even have any supplies. How heâs not died from blood loss is a surprise to him as much as it is to them.
âWhatâs my guarantee you wonât turn on me?â He finally asks after a decent amount of time contemplating it.
They shrug, âYou have none. But, you have the guarantee that if I turn on you, youâll be the one coming out of that altercation alive.â Their gaze sizes up the guns heâs got on him, emphasizing their point.
Suddenly, Ethan feels sorta ridiculous - after all, guns or no guns, he could probably take on them easily with just his knife. Regardless, no one can blame him for being cautious. âFine.â He mutters, âBut please donât turn on me, Iâve already had one hell of a day.â
Y/N nods, motioning for him to follow them, âI promise I wonât.â
                                * * *
âWow, what a back-stabber! Some friends you have, Winters.â Y/N comments as they set down a cup of tea on the small wooden table in front of the freshly patched up Ethan.
Turns out, he made the right move by trusting them - they used to be the villageâs main nurse until it all went to hell and they went to hide in the shadows of their windmill where they, as evidenced, still are today. That being said, not only did they have all the necessary equipment to fix him up, but they also had the skills and knowledge needed to use that equipment.
âThere are those friends who borrow money from you and never pay you back and there are those who shoot your wife randomly while you two are trying to have dinner. Two types of friends out there really.â He sighs, his tired, a thousand yard stare following the path of the steam levitating from the cup thatâs been placed in front of him. âI have no time to dwell on that right now though. My daughter is in grave danger and I have no idea where I should even start looking for her.â
Y/N sits down on a chair opposite his, âWell, youâve already defeated one of the village Lords looking for Rose, process of elimination should reveal where she is - wherever she is, it has to be one of the Lordsâ residence. Mother Miranda trusted Lady Dimitrescu most so itâs a wonder why she wasnât there, but then again, Heisenbergâs factory is damn near impenetrable, one cannot enter unless he wants them to so she could have entrusted her precious cargo to him.â
âHow do I get to that fucker?â Ethan tightens his hand into a fist, squeezing so tightly his knuckles turn white. Thereâs so much within him, so much thatâs happened to him, so much in such a short amount of time and heâs had no time to deal with any of it. Heâs a volcano waiting to erupt, but he has to do so at the right time - in front of the right danger to show heâs not hopeless or weak as his opponent may think. âWhere do I find him?â
âHeâs in the outskirts too just on the other side of the village.â They sigh, regretting every word they are saying since they know they are just feeding him information on how to get himself in the worst kind of danger heâs probably ever been in. âThat key you have, itâs not complete to access his quarters yet. By the looks of it...â they observe the key Ethan has placed on the table, âYou can only get to Lord Donna Benevientoâs estate, and I wouldnât suggest heading there before you heal at least a bit more. Her and her dolls are a real nightmare. Of course, I havenât experienced it for myself, but the stories are enough to get an idea.â
âSo youâre telling me I have to waste my time with the little fish before I can finally get to Rose? You know how long thatâll take? You know how long sheâll have to be at the mercy of a fucking lunatic until I can finally save her?!â Ethan snaps, banging his fist against the table, bad idea considering his handâs been just patched up. The impact sends a jolt of pain up his arm that makes him hiss.
âI get it, I understand, Ethan. But you are a lot less likely to get to your daughter if youâre dead, you know.â Y/N cautiously explains, their eyes narrowing a bit as they wait for the pearl white bandages to soak crimson, sighing in relief when they donât. âSpeaking of how likely you may or may not be to get to her on time, Iâd also have to mention your odds would be significantly higher if you were to receive help from someone else. Youâd need someone to have your back throughout all the shit youâre about to go through, especially Heisenbergâs factory where two eyes are not enough to track each and every threat that might pounce at you.â
Calmer now, Ethan gives them a puzzled look, âWhat are you suggesting?â
âIâm suggesting - well, Iâm offering you my partnership.â They explain, watching his expression change to one of knowing and understanding. âOf course, youâd have to give up one of those guns and hand it down to me, but I think thatâs a small price to pay in exchange for an extra pair of eyes and limbs to guard and help you.â
Ethanâs first instinct is to decline. He canât afford to see another person dying around him or because of him, he wouldnât be able to stand it. But then again, just like he had no guarantee they wouldnât turn on him, he has none that theyâll die. Of course, heâll do everything in his power to keep them and himself alive and they donât seem like they are in it to half-ass it either. Quite the contrary, they seem perfectly determined and ready to face the same shit heâs about to.
âWhat do you get in return?â He asks, his gaze suspiciously measuring each line on their face to gauge their true intentions. Heâs a complete stranger to them, theyâd have no reason to be this selfless for him, itâs obvious they are aiming at something bigger.
Y/N scoffs, leaning back in their chair with a small bitter smile on their face, their gaze resting on the tabletop and avoiding his, âYou really wanna know? I want my revenge - revenge for what they did to this village, to me, to so many people I cared about and to those I didnât even know. But...â they trail off, pausing to sigh out a heavy sigh before continuing, âBut I also wanna redeem myself. I knew I shouldâve done all in my power to stop them when their havoc was still on the rise, I knew I shouldâve done more, but I didnât. And now Iâll die trying.â
âYou wonât die.â He says sharply, barely a second after the last word left their lips, âI wonât allow it.â He adds, taking a bit of the edge off his voice.
Their eyes come up to meet his, searching for what he means, âDoes that mean...â
âIt sure does, partner.â Within the blink of an eye, his pistol is on the table, fully loaded and free for their taking, âYou just give a green light and weâre off.â
Y/N lets out a sound between a laugh and a gasp as their hands quickly wrap around the gun, looking at it in disbelief before whispering a quick âthank youâ. Ethan allows them to marvel at it for a bit longer but they donât wait another second. âGet your ass up, Winters. We have monsters to kill.â
He neednât be told twice
Chapter 17
Immortal Dilemmas
Death does not discriminate. Whether they are old or young, rich or poor, man or woman, evil or good death would come to claim when Fate had deemed their life had been long enough. There are those who try to avoid Death and believe they fooled death by gaining semblance of immortality. Death does not take likely to such foolery. There was a reason for why Mother Nature made even them have weaknesses, they do not wish to enact their siblingâs wrath. The only ones that Death deemed to have the privilege of avoiding them is of course their mistress and her family. Even then there will be a day that Death will claim them as well but unlike other mortals their mistress embraces death much like her mate, they accept death. But then there are others who believe that they do not deserve death and wish to avoid them at all cost, such arrogance does not go unpunished.
Death quite enjoys showing the overconfident and arrogant mortals that all they did was buy time but that was all. In the end the first âImmortalsâ where taught that their time came at a very steep price just as the Peverell Brothers did. When a Wiccan dared to repeat the past transgressions made by another fool, Death ensured that her road into the afterlife would be excruciating. Especially since hearing that one day the children she had maltreated would one day mean a great deal to their master. The realm that death send her to would ensure as such but as of late they feel something was amiss. Someone was trying to undo their work! They could see Magic could sense it as well but before they could intervene Fate had arrived. They usually just reside in their own realms, they were both in Deathâs realm appearing as James Potter and Sirius Black. Fate came to them as a figure with a hooded cloak.
âYouâll do well to leave them to their own devices,siblings.â, Fate said with their usual superior tone. Like death most forces donât get in their way but instead of fear it was more to save a figurative headache. Fate can be a bitch if they didnât get what they want in they wanted it. Magic and Death, however, couldnât have cared less at that moment.
âIâll be damned if I let some delusional mortal become a vexing to MY MISTRESS!â, Death said with a thunderous tone. Glaring at their sibling so intensely that it made them flinch but hold their ground. Fate was about to speak but was interrupted by Magic.
âNor will I allow such a heinous use of me to become another dilemma for MY CHOSEN!â, Magic out of all their siblings Death and Magic had to be the oneâs most hated by Fate. No matter their carefully crafted plans if Death and Magic decided on going off course there wasnât much that Fate could do in retaliation. In came the tantrum.
âI HAVE LET BOTH OF YOU DICTATE ENOUGH OF HER JOURNEY! IF SHE IS TRULY WORTHY OF YOUR ATTENTION AND TITLES THEN SHE WILL OVERCOME IT! If not then that child was not wor-â, Fate did not get to finish their sentence as both of their siblings decided to send a wave of power to knock them away.
âDO NOT SPEAK ANOTHER ILL WORD OF HER! That child, as you put it, has overcome obstacles and pain that you as a mortal could never dare to approach or hope to bear!â, Magic said trying to reel back their anger from such slander of their chosen.
âIt must happen Magic. If not dealt with now that Wiccan would just be more of a threat to your dear chosen. Besides she is not the only impudent mortal that will come.â, Fate said after picking themselves up and dusting themselves off. Magic made a move to knock the down again but was held back by Death and they looked at their sibling curiously.
âWait MagicâŠthink. Though as I loathe to admit it Fate has a point. Our Hailey has survived and conquered what no other could begin to imagine. We mustâŠnot intervene.â, it pained Death but Fate needed to run their course. The only way to help Hailey is that she could still use the gifts and powers bestowed upon her. Magic was baffled.
âBUT-!!â, Magic was of course protective of their Chosen. Their vessel was a her father and a fatherâs duty was to protect their family.
âEnough! This must happen or consequences will be troublesome.â, Fate said bitingly tired of having to argue about not getting their way. Both Magic and Death were annoyed by their outburst. Death nodded to Fate begrudgingly. They had to nudge Magic to do the same.
âFINE!â, they said. Not happy with having to put Hailey in any risk.
~Back in Mystic Falls~
Hailey was glad that Klaus had made good progress with his brothers. Elijah was a gentleman, Finn was quite curious over everything, and Kol seemed very interested in her kind and magic in general. She feel it best to not yet inform him about her âchosenâ status. Theyâve only been awake for barely a couple of hours. She and the family had just welcomed the pack in and got them settled. Sheâll have to speak to Klaus later when he believes it would be appropriate for the pack to go back to base. But until then she quite enjoyed the feeling of a full house.
She and Stefan had recently decided to not attend school. Hermione and Ron would have liked for them to but they understood. Hailey and Stefan have forever to go back to school but they cannot go back to enjoy the boys growing. Just that morning sealed their decision, the boys had reacted to peek-a-boo with their first laughs. It started with Stefan doing tummy time and Hailey recording them. Soon Caelan had started giggling and that triggered Cedar. Stefan had looked up with happy astonishment on his face and saw his wife had happy tears. They both had seen yet another stage of their boys growing and they donât want to miss anything.
On the first day classes had started Hailey had gone to see Hermione and Ron off. Of course Stefan and the boys tagged along, he had been teaching the wizards to drive along with teaching his new older brothers how to as well. Hailey was a fast learner but had a tendency to be a speed junky, same with Kol. Ron, Remus, and Finn took a bit longer to learn what everything in the car could do but soon got the hang of it. Thankfully he had Hermione to rely on to teach sometimes as well as she was previously taught. It was when they went to a car dealership that Stefan had got a brief glimpse how wealthy Hailey was.
She had barely blinked when she decided to buy three new cars for the family. Stefan had persisted in paying for half of the cost and she had said, âStefan, donât worry about it! I could buy every car in the lot and it would barely leave a dent in my inheritanceâ. She had proceeded to buy the red BMW that Ron was eyeing, she gotten herself a blue ford mustang, and for Remus a black Mercedes. He could tell from the way Remus eye was twitching that they had been over it before but werenât allowed to say anything. They rode into the school parking lot, garnering a lot of attention staff and student alike. Caroline and Tyler were there to be sure that the magicals were comfortable at the muggle school. While exchanging goodbyes a cough was heard, a very aggravating voice followed behind it.
Elena has had a very crappy last few months. First Stefan had gotten trapped by that freak of nature and said freak of nature continued to cause chaos around town. Elena was still fairly popular but not as much as the Potterâs. They came from old money, they were mysterious, and had gotten into the good books of the now second most rich family in Mystic Falls. Elena felt her temper flare up any time she heard the older people of the town talk about Potter in a sympathetic voice or hear girls envying Potterâs clothes and luck in spouse. She just about had a tantrum when she heard some males leer and lewdly talk about Hailey Freaking Potter and ignore her presence completely. Seeing the mushy scene she had to do something.
âYou guys shouldnât be making such a big scene. Hurry up or else weâll be late! Stefan, whatâs your first period?â, Elenaâs plan was to break up the domestic scene and isolate her friends and Stefan from the Potterâs. Sheâs so frustrated with them being friends with them that all she wanted to do was shake them until some sense got into their heads. She batted her eyes at Stefan and made a sight pout, it used to make Stefan wild. She was unpleasantly surprised at his response.
âIâm not in school anymore, weâre just here to see Ron and Hermione off. Me and Hailey decided to stay home with the boys-â, he didnât get to finish as Elena unleashed an honest to god tantrum.
âStefan that is so irresponsible of you! You canât just drop out! How the hell are you gonna support your âfamilyâ-â, she didnât get to finish as Stefan interrupted her. How the hell was she supposed to keep him away from Potter is heâs at home with her all day, every day!
âIncase you forgot Elena! My family is pretty wealthy and so it Haileyâs. We can get a proper education later but right now we donât want to miss out on the boys.â, Stefan was starting to get fed up with Elenaâs entitled attitude towards how he should spend his time. If he wanted to raise his kids with his wife instead of going to school that was his business.
âBut-, then how are we supposed to hang out and talk if youâre going to be at home!?â, Elenaâs sputtering and ranting was gaining a lot of attention, onlookers had never seen this side of the Gilbert Good Girl. Some were a bit weirded out that she was clinging to a guy that already had kids and was happily married.
âElena!! We arenât together anymore remember, weâre not even friends! Any chance of being friends ended when you insulted Hailey and behaved like a straight up stalker!â, Stefan snapped. Now everyone was looking at Elena horrified. What in the world was going on through that girlâs head?
âIâm sorry that you decided that some girl-â, how could Stefan let some new girl come between them! Sure she had feelings for Damon but she knew deep down that they were supposed to be together! She didnât get to tell him as such because it seems that Elenaâs voice has become a new torture tactic for Stefan. Hailey had to hold his hand to calm him down, the sight made Elena more mad if it was possible. And the onlookers were able to tell.
âIâm going to stop you right there because Hailey is not just some girl! Sheâs my wife! The mother of my children! So yes she means more to me than your delusional relationship that you made in your head! Just let it go Elena and move on. Guys weâll see you when you get home. Tyler, Caroline take care of them, okay?â, after getting a nod and sympathetic smile from them, Hailey and Stefan made their way back to their car to drive home. Elena made a move to follow them but was blocked by four angry supernatural teenagers. At seeing Caroline and Tylerâs glares she decided to start ranting again.
âI canât believe you two! You betrayed us and went to the enemy!? Are you guys insane?!â
âGet real Elena, we became their friends thereâs nothing wrong with that. We stopped being friends with you because you have become seriously sick in the head!â, Tyler said uncaringly. His words are typical as Tyler was known to be a harsh asshole but him defending the new family was quite the spectacle. Tyler had since sworn his loyalty to his Alpha and his family which included Hailey. Heâll be damned before he lets Elena spout off stupid crap. At Tylerâs words, Elena looked to Caroline for assistance but all Caroline did was turn her nose up and away from her.
âMiss Gilbert, youâll be wise to leave us alone. From what weâve heard about you, we really donât want to be put in your vicinity.â, Hermione said in cold voice. Elena could practically feel the outsiders magic trying to suffocate her.
âJust leave us alone, alright? And if we hear you trying to badmouth or hurt our sister youâll be sorry.â, Ron didnât want to hurt a muggle girl, but from what heâs heard from his brother-in-law,heâs willing to hurt anyone who tries to hurt Hailey. A lion never leaves a member of the pride to fend for themselves. Elena was doing a good impression of a fish. They all moved past her with Hermione shoulder checking her.
As soon as they were inside they could feel everyoneâs stares and hear the whispers. They paid them no mind and just headed to class. Ron had Tyler in all his classes so nobody dared to get close and ask questions. Less they wish to get decked by Tyler, who was known for having a short fuse. Hermione had Caroline, who let out a tongue lashing about respecting privacy to get people away. Elena was glaring at the quartet throughout the day. If she had been focusing she would have noticed that her friends and even her brother were all trying to avoid her.
Bonnie has been successfully avoiding Elena. She doesnât trust the Originals but she was not going to risk her life saving Damon of all people. She can relate to what Coraline has said and couldnât believe Elena. She seen the Potters around town, people had been calling the family that due to it seeming that they just follow everything Hailey Potter did and said. It was surreal to see, like the President with their secret service or something. The school was spreading rumors about Elena being Stefanâs stalker and some kids were even starting to worry that she might try to hurt the Potter Matriarch. After a long hectic first day she was happy to get home and just sleep. However when she woke up she found herself in a strange cave
In front of her was a coffin. What in the- how did she get there? She then, as if in a trance, made her way to it and opened the coffin. Inside it was a beautiful woman. Blonde hair, fair skin, and very traditional clothing. The resemblance to the Original sister popped into her mind. She then felt herself sit down on the ground, she vaguely noticed a circle around her being drawn by an unseeable force. But the trance on her was too strong. Whispers of an ancient language brushed by her ears. A bowl in front of her had lit ablaze and was only put out once she drew blood. When the fire went out, she took a large gasp. As if waking from a nightmare or the startling realization one could move after feeling the affects of sleep paralysis.
Bonnie looked up and her eyes met with a bright blue.
As an unwanted mother resurfaced, familiar faces have arrived via portkey.
Slumbering Hearts (Alcina Dimitrescu/Reader, Soulmate AU) Pt. 1
Fandom: Resident Evil: Village Rating: T for language/brief nudity Warnings: None Summary: In a wicked twist of fate, you find out your soulmate is none other than your employer, Lady Dimitrescu. To your misery, she (at first) seems equally displeased, her heart already belonging to another. But in time, the two of you find yourselves wondering... could the universe be right, after all? Soulmate AU in which every person has a unique "soul mark", which they share with their soulmate. Notes: Reader is gender neutral, but at some points will be described as leaning towards being feminine (due to personal interpretation of Alcina's character). Additionally, Lady D will eventually be referred to by her first name, so don't worry if you feel weird about her being called by her full title all the time, it's just for this chap, when the reader isn't familiar with her. Lastly, this contains a bit of one sided Alcina/Miranda, which serves as a plot point, but is (clearly) not the primary ship.
1: In The Shadow Of Giants
Three months, two weeks, and one day. Thatâs how long youâve been at this accursed castle, serving cruel mistresses, having been plucked from your peaceful life in the village. Anger stains your every thought, slowly festering inside your chest. There is no cure, at least not without a fatal price, but there are mild remedies. âTis not long before the other servants learn to give you the more physically demanding chores. Nothing numbs your mind quite the same way that chopping firewood does, though you often settle for hard scrubbing age-old tile. Every day ends with your muscles crying from the effort of it all. Every day⊠except today. Another servant, from the night shift, has been wounded severely, and her job was deemed too important to be foregone.
And, as such, she has been replaced. By you. For once, you turn in early, long before your clothes can become stained with sweat. Yet you arenât happy, not when you know that this change will ruin your sleep for weeks to come. Even worse, itâll be impossible to avoid your âemployersâ, whereas working the day shift meant almost never seeing them. So far, you have only seen them on four or five occasions. Hell, youâve only met two of them, being Cassandra and Bela. Based on what others told you, the other two werenât much (if at all) better. As you try your best to get some rest, only a single âpositiveâ thought runs through your head: Well, worst comes to worst, Iâll get killed, then I wonât have to worry about anything anymore.
---------------------------
âRemember: No talking unless youâre asked a question. The Mistress has had a rough morning, and this is her best chance at relaxing,â Juniper explains, for what seems like the eighth time since the two of you met. Thereâs a nervous energy around her, which does little to ease your own anxieties. If you heard correctly, sheâs only been at the castle for a couple weeks, having previously worked for Mother Miranda. Youâre not sure what would have caused the transfer, considering most who were âfiredâ ended up dead. Something told you that it had to do with antsy nature. âOh, and donât leave unless dismissed, even once your part is done. We all need to be ready, in case Mistress- I mean, Lady Dimitrescu needs something. Sorry, Iâm still getting used to how things work here.â
âAs long as you donât slip up in front of her and get us both killed, I donât really care,â you replied, giving Juniper a level stare. Clearly unsure how to respond, she pauses for a moment, mouth opening then closing without a sound. Once sheâs seemingly composed herself, you give a short nod and push open the door to the bathroom. Two other servants are already inside, and they flinch at your arrival, briefly mistaking you for their boss. âI can hardly believe they made me change shifts for this,â you add, under your breath, rolling your eyes. What was so important about making sure a few candles stayed lit? During bathtime? Maybe it was something you had to be a giant, vampiric noblewoman to understand. Regardless of your annoyance, you quickly get to work, striking the first of a couple matches. Itâs a rather dull task. To think you would have preferred heavy labor to this.
Before long, the last flame springs to life, and Juniper dims the lights, allowing the candles to become the focus. At least one is scented, though you cannot place the specific kind. Less than a minute after the last one is lit, the door once again swings open, revealing your most elusive employer. Sheâs⊠more than you anticipated. In every conceivable way, truthfully. Taller, more graceful (even as she has to duck through the entrance), and, as much as you hate to think so, far, far more beautiful. If not for the warm lighting of the room, you would have worried about someone seeing your blush. Certainly I am not the first to react this way, you think, as you bow alongside the others.
âYes, yes, get on with it,â Lady Dimitrescu says, with a sharp frown. Then she moves closer to the tub, which you imagine could fit half a dozen ânormalâ people, and holds out her arms to her side. For a moment youâre confused, but you instinctively mimic the motions of the other maidens. Together the four of you reach for her robe, gently taking hold of it while she steps into the bath, before hanging it onto a nearby hook. A second later your entire world is turned upside down. Youâre freezing in place, eyes wide, as the bare back of Lady Dimitrescu reveals itself to you. Yet this is not an instance of poorly veiled lust. No, it is equal parts horror and repulsion, for you find yourself staring at a distinctive soul marking.
One that matches your own.
Beside you, Juniper watches you with concern, silently urging you to stay silent. Neither of the other two servants seem to react, other than by taking a small step backwards. Unable to speak, let alone form coherent thoughts, all you can do is point a trembling finger towards the soul mark. Itâs right in between Lady Dimitrescuâs shoulder blades. Once upon a time, you had marveled at the design, smiling every time you saw it in the mirror. Now, it might as well be the ugliest thing youâve ever seen. Based on her expression, Juniper seems to agree, although for different reasons. As your hand drops back to your side, you try to compose yourself enough to focus on the task before you. Instead, someone breaks the quiet, boldly, daring to think that they would be rewarded for it.
âMy Lady,â a servant says, stepping forward, shooting you a waywards glance. Instantly she has your employerâs attention, though that comes with the metallic sssssslk of her claws extending. Thereâs an unspoken threat that demands respect. None comes, however, just the frenzied words of a panicked maiden. âI know who your soulmate is, my Lady. I thought that perhaps youâd-â
âA name. Give me⊠a name,â Lady Dimitrescu interjects, claws still out and impatiently tapping on the tile floor. Tense, you start to step forward, wanting desperately to silence the treacherous maiden. But her tongue is faster than your fist, and soon enough your name is echoing through the room. âOh? The one right behind me, hmm? Dreadfully convenient, really. Step forward, dear, and let me see the proof. Assuming it exists.â All eyes other than hers are on you, now. With a deep breath, you begrudgingly step in front of Lady Dimitrescu, trying not to even briefly glance at her chest (or worse, lower). One of her hands shifts, a long claw tilting your chin up. âWell?â
âForgive the placement,â you mutter, awkwardly grabbing your shirt collar, tugging it down to reveal your soul mark, planted neatly on the center of your chest. If Lady Dimitrescuâs gaze wanders, it does so too quickly to be noticed, though she does make a low humming noise at the sight. Feeling much like a piece of meat on display at the butcherâs, you scowl deeply. Soon enough, but not as soon as youâd like, the claw under your chin retracts, and you once more cover up your soul mark. You canât bring yourself to look your soulmate in the eyes.
âHmm. Not what I expected. Not at all,â she muses, more to herself than to you, softly. Behind her, Juniper is sending you a sympathetic expression. All you can do, as Lady Dimitrescu judges you, is glare at the origin of this revelation. What did she think to gain by speaking up? Hadnât she heard the same rumors that you had? Didnât she know that your employer already loved another, even if that affection was unrequited? There was, simply put, no chance that you were the preferable option. Not when there was no race against neither time nor death. At best, you could be a distraction. Something to keep her mind off of the person sheâd rather be with. âGo clean up, get some sustenance if you must, then go to my quarters. We will discuss this further there- after I am done here.â
With that said, she waves you off, letting you relax for the first time in several minutes. After giving a short bow, you immediately move to leave. On your way, you intentionally bump shoulders with the maiden who spoke up, sending her a glare, then give Juniper a nod of acknowledgement. Nervous wreck or not, she was the only person you âknewâ on the night shift. Not that such a thing would even matter soon. To think that weâve been soulmates this whole time, you think, living in the same castle for months, never seeing each other. I wish things could have stayed that way. At least youâd have some time to process your developing situation. Though you doubted youâd have enough time.
---------------------------
In an unusual change of pace, Alcina dismisses the rest of her servants, long before her bath is done. They exchange glances before scattering to the winds. A heavy sigh leaves her lips, and she sinks lower into the tub. Of course I have a soulmate, she thinks, bitterly. I knew this. Knew that it wasnât her, and yet still, I find myself surprised. Disappointed, even. How had an already rough evening gotten even worse? More than that, what was she supposed to do about it? There was a part of her that wanted to kill her soulmate. She figured that, with them out of the way, the universe might finally understand who she was meant to be with. After all, it wasnât uncommon for âwidowsâ to be given a new match, and those were generally other âwidowsâ. Considering that Alcina knew for a fact that Mother Mirandaâs soulmate had long since died, she did not think that her hopes were beyond possibility.
But there was another part of her, quieter, that dared to be more realistic. If the universe said that this human, this tiny thing, was her soulmate⊠would it not make sense to at least try? What harm could it do, when her current love had been unrequited for so long? Was this not the end to several decades of loneliness? Damn it, she thinks, gripping the edge of the bathtub until her knuckles turned white. There was no denying it, now that a single drop of rational thought had corrupted her mind. Fuck it all, I hardly have a choice. Or anything to lose, for that matter. With her decision made, she rises to her feet, emotionally ready to face the unknown.
---------------------------
âAh, so you do follow directions, after all. I half expected to learn that you had attempted to flee, or perhaps had a gruesome run in with one of my daughters,â Lady Dimitrescu chimes, as she ducks into her room. Inside, standing at attention, you await. All of your earlier nervousness returns, though this time it is tinged with your natural rage. Of all the monsters in the world, this was the one you were expected to love. It mattered not how tall she was, or how sharp her nails could be, or how fierce her loyalty to Mother Miranda. To you, it mattered that you had no choice in being here, that only a handful of servants had come to the castle willingly. It mattered that a single mistake could mean a cruel death. So you did not greet your soulmate with a smile, or excitement, rather with a forced bow and blank expression. Better to be dead than to fake true love. âCome now, do at least pretend that you are excited, for my sake. I have been waiting a century for this, after all.â
âPerhaps the universe found it difficult to find someone who could love you,â you say, the words tumbling out of your mouth, instant regret boiling up inside of you. What you expect is a swift death. What you get? A deep sigh, a scowl, a look of frustration. Still fearing your possible demise, you are quick to keep speaking. âOr maybe the universe heard me talk once, and struggled to find someone to tolerate me. Countless possibilities, a galaxy full of mysteries⊠and here we are. Forgive me for being crass, my Lady. I would blame it on my schedule change, but something tells me you would see right through that lie, yes?â Not like that was much better, you think, wondering how the hell you were going to survive this.
âYouâre quite the character, arenât you?... Do try not to make me regret this, Iâd rather not kill my soulmate. Now, sit down, itâs about time for a proper introduction,â Lady Dimitrescu commands. Then sheâs sitting on the edge of her bed, gently patting the spot next to her. Joining her is just about the last thing you want to do right now⊠but you obey nonetheless. Still, you angle yourself away from her ever so slightly, hoping the subtle body language would help you distance yourself from her. Thereâs something in her expression that tells you she knows exactly what youâre trying to do. âI am Lady Dimitrescu, though you already know that. You may call me Alcina⊠for now. Behave, or that is one of many privileges I will not hesitate to take from you. Understood?â
It takes all of your willpower to avoid rolling your eyes, but you manage, instead giving a short nod. Thisâll be interesting, for sure.
I am in need of an adventure that would fit well in a gothic horror campaign. Perhaps to do with one of my NPCs who is a changeling that is in search of her brother (not knowing they are the same being)...
Hunt: The Wraiths of St. Nuallan CathedralÂ
â Whatever you do, Donât look upâÂ
Adventure Hooks:
Travelers tell of a town submerged in fog, where shadowy apparitions circle in the gloom like ravens at a gallows. They speak of a bell tolling in an otherwise deathly quiet settlement, and people too afraid to leave their homes to even fetch wood for their hearths.Â
Rumors of a recently uncovered crypt at a famous monastery send rumors of sainted burials and their associated relics flying through the circles of collectors, custodians, and criminals. Thereâs a brisk business to be made in the secondhand blessings carried by the bones of god-beloved individuals, and everyone wants a piece of the real deal. Relic-hunting gangs plan forays into the ghost bedeviled town, where as elders of the faith work to take back the settlement while securing the dig site and the treasure within.Â
Following the trail of an important NPC, the party finds their investigation turning into a confused tangle of confused reports, forgetful witnesses, and hastily scrawled documents that seem to contradict themselves at random. Something is afoot here, and to discover it theyâll have to face down the wraiths in order to discover the elusive truth.Â
Setup: Living some three centuries hence, Saint Nuallan was said to be a great diplomat, one who earned his status as the regionâs archbishop and later canonization due to his ability to negotiate between the faithful and the paganistic hillfolk . This reputation is false however, and like a crooked cornerstone has warped the very foundations of his legacy over time.Â
Nuallan was indeed a negotiator, but one who played both sides against the other for his own gain. Starting first as a lay brother and translator between the faithful and the pagans, he attached himself to bands of warriors looking to raid the faithful, acting as their gobetween to haggle on a price required to forestall violence.  âGive me what I want or my pagan friends will sack your villageâ was the poison that lurked beneath Nuallanâs honeyed words, and he rode that threat all the way to the diocese, accruing wealth and warriors for his unofficial warband with each raiding season.Â
When a local noble called his bluff and called for Nuallanâs removal from office, the grifting bishop had his barbaric followers massacre that nobleâs holdings, then blamed the whole thing on a trio of his own missions, disavowing any involvement in the matter while simultaneously pushing for a showy public execution for these âbloodthirsty marauders.âÂ
These three haunted Nuallan long after their death, scornful of his deception and desperate to see him brought to justice, he eventually had them sealed away beneath the foundations of his temple, Unable to pass on or seek their vengeance for three hundred years, these spirits degraded, eventually becoming wraiths composed of nothing but malice and resentment, twisted by the suffering and dishonor theyâd suffered in life to the point where they forgot who they originally were.Â
Released during maintenance to the cathedralâs foundations, these wraiths now look everywhere for the Deceitful bishop, taring apart the minds of anyone they happen across looking for the information.Â
Further Adventures:Â
To still the spirits and quiet their rage, the party must recover the Saintâs bones from the Cathedralâs crypts, bypassing traps, lingering haunts, and relic-hunting thieves in their search. Simply destroying the bones is not enough, they must be carried out of the tombs, set up on the cathedral steps and put on trial just as the raiders were in life, Nuallanâs crimes exposed for all to hear. Only after that will the ghosts truly rest.Â
to the asker: the trail of your changeling leads to this particular town, where there is evidence that they stayed before on one of their journeys, possibly looking for ( insert relationship to the metaplot here).  While in town, they were ambushed by one of the spirits ( possibly on the day they were first released) who pried apart apart their memories, creating a disconuity in their mind between their previous self ( the brother) and the current self.  While they remember the basics of their past, there is a chunk of memories that have become untethered from their subjective recollection, forcing their brain to invent a second party to have been the origin of these events without firsthand experience. Like a broken bone thatâs set improperly, this fracture in the changelingâs internal narrative has healed in an unhealthy way, creating the existence of the âbrotherâ character and forcing them to backfill his existence into the rest of their recollection.Â
PT. 1 - PT. 2 - PT. 3 - PT. 4
MAIN MASTERLIST
Few days passed with the girl lying on her bed recovering from the wound that the fight gave her.
When she opened her eyes after have fainted in Kaz's arms, fear had been the first to come to visit her. Fear of being already tied at some bed on a ship, sold at the Shu that would have been more than happy to make experiment on her. She was scared that the temptation must have been too much for Kaz Brekker to have such a value grisha in his hands, but then she noticed she was in her room at the Slat and a rush of tiredness hit her making her sleep again.
The other times she opened her eyes someone among Jesper, Inej and Wylan was always at her side, changing the bandage and bringing her food.
Inej told her that her father, Jan Van Eck, was now aware that she was part of the Dregs, and she was under Kaz Brekker's protection. Everyone was aware she was a grisha, but neither Jesper and Inej seemed to mind her lie, maybe because they had secrets too, she though.
A morning a letter came for Kaz, a letter from her father.
Mister Brekker
we never had the occasion to meet, and you'll agree with me when I say that I wish to keep things like this. Voice is spread that you have my beloved daughter with you. I hope you understand that she is a danger for this city. I've sent her away many years ago with the only interest of protecting Kerch from her, but I see that I could have done things in a better way.
It is as a father that I ask you to bring her to me so that I can repair my mistakes. She is a danger for all of us if not under control, Mister Brekker, and I am sure you saw it yourself last night. She has to face a trial for her crimes and be sent where she can't be a danger for anyone anymore. If she doesn't come back in seven days, I should consider you and your Dregs as her accomplices, planning to attack Ketterdam and all Kerch using her power.
Surely a smart men as yourself doesn't want those kind of problems.
Hope to see my city safe again,
Jan Van Eck.
Inej had brough the letter at her in the afternoon, and in the evening the grisha girl was already planning her escaping from Ketterdam for the third time in her life.
She didn't want to leave Wylan, hell she had promised him they wouldn't split up ever again, but if her plan worked then he would have been able to follow her after few months. If the Van Eck siblings moved together they would have caught too much attention, and they had to do everything in secrets.
Wylan tried to convince her to stay. He was sure that Kaz would have helped her, Wylan was sure that Kaz Brekker would have sealed all Ketterdam to keep her save, and even if as her brother he didn't like her closeness with the Bastard of the Barrel, he couldn't deny that it was useful.
"I'm putting all of you in danger just staying here. If I go away father will have nothing to threat you with." she said putting her clothes in her bags. Seven days, she couldn't give her father the time to close all the harbours in Kerch. If she wanted to go she had to do it as soon as possible.
"Talk to Kaz! Let see what he says, please." begged Wylan grabbing her hands in his to stop her.
She looked in his beautiful blue eyes and saw hope. "You really think Kaz has the power to keep me here?"
Her brother smirked. "I think Kaz would tear apart this city to keep you save. Talk to him, keep your options open."
Dirtyhands would never fight a battle where he couldn't win money, but Y/n was willing to try. That night after dinner she decided she would speak with Kaz and see if he was willing to keep her.
"Let see what the great Kaz Brekker think about it." she sighed putting her arm around Wylan's shoulder and walking downstair where their dinner waited them.
Kaz Brekker sat in his office, in his gloved hands the red handkerchief and Jan Van Eck's letter. Before that morning the death of Van Eck had been one of the many he wanted to deal with for what he had done to his Fire Girl, but now his death had taken a shape, colours and many details that Kaz's was adding one by one.
Brick by brick, Kaz would take all his enemies down, and Y/n was more than welcome to take her revenger with him.
He went downstair at the second floor walking toward Y/n's room. He wanted to check how she was, and speak with her about how she wanted to deal with her father. He didn't know if she wanted his actual death, but he was just fine with torture.
When he reached the door and looked inside his blood froze. All her things were packed in three bags, all her clothes were gone from her wardrobe and none of her objects were around the room. Neither the little portrait of she and baby Wylan that she kept on her bedside table before falling asleep.
She is leaving you.
These words felt like a stab in his chest, like someone had taken the oxigen from his lungs. Would she, leave him? Yes. Y/n would find a better life everywhere out Kerch, it was reasonable that she was already packing. When she wanted to leave? Where she wanted to go?
He knew nothing about it and Kaz Brekker always knew everything. Especially of what happened in his Slat. But this time the girl was leaving him, again, and she hadn't had talked with him about it. She hadn't advised him. Did you really think she was going to live this life just for you? For a man who can't even hold her hands without hyperventilate? A man who can't give her the love she deserve?
The fear he saw in her eyes when she saved his life with her power wasn't because she was feared of his rejection; she feared that he would have send her out of the Dregs, without protection and away from her brother.
He stormed back in his office, anger filled his boody and what else? Disappointment? Sadness? He was angry with himself because he had been a fool again. He had let someone playing with him again, that's what Y/n had been doing. She had been toying with him. She had made sure to have a safe place where live, a job and her brother beside her. Every little nice things she did for him was just to keep him close, to keep Dirtyhands at bay.
Like a fury he threw everything that was on his desk on the floor with his arms. Documents, the handkerchief, the letters, were all on the floor but he couldn't care less. She wanted to leave? Fine. Dirtyhands didn't care.
A known shiver crossed his spine before he heard a knock at his door.
"What?" he didn't look up when the girl entered, too focus on something in the drawers of his desk.
"Wow, and I though to be the one who had a bad day." she joked looking the mess at his feet.
He didn't smile, or smirked. He kept his eyes on something she coudn't see. "What bussiness?"
What bussiness. Those words were the greeting in Ketterdam when two bussiness men met, but the grisha girl though that she and Kaz had passed that step. He must had really a bad day, and it could have been because of the letter...she though sadly.
Who knew what other problems her father had caused around Ketterdam to earn the attention of Kaz, to push him to hand her in his hands.
"My father...I don't want any of you to be in danger because of me." she said carefully walking closer to his desk. A glimp of red captured her eyes but the pain at her waist made her close her eyes for a second.
"I'd say it's too late for it, isn't it?" he asked coldly. She took a step behind, taken back by his coldness toward her. "You seemed to enoy keeping secrets, didn't you? Do you know how easier it would have been knowing about your being grisha months ago?"
That wasn't the boy who had brough her in his arms out from the gala. He wasn't the boy who fought beside her, spied beside her and saved her a couple of time.
"I am sorry, I truly am Kaz. But I know what is the price of being a grisha here...it wouldn't have been easy for me walking with a target on my back. I have done it my whole life."
He refused to look her in the eyes, and it was driving her crazy. Was he really that mad at her that he couldn't bare even the sight of her?
"You decided for yourself, a thing you tend to do often I see." she was sure he had never spoken to her like that, neither in his bad days, and Kaz Brekker had a lot of bad days. "You swore loyalty to the Dregs, to the Crows. If you can't trust us then you shouldn't stay here."
He had said the crucial words, and there was no going back. She wanted to leave, then he would make sure to let her believe that he didn't care. That he didn't care about not finding his hot coffee on his desk again, or that from that day on he wouldn't feel the shivers in his spine anymore. He pretended to not care about not seeing her anymore. She had left him once, he could survive it a second time.
"That's it? That's what you want?" she felt her voice dying in her throat. Was her mistake that big? You knew that once Kaz knew what you were he would have pushed you away like everyone else. 'No one will understand you as the other of your kind', Baghra once told her, but when she met Kaz she believed that her old teacher was wrong. Kaz Brekker had been her safe harbour when no one else would care about her, was she so easily replaceable for him?
"You would have leave anyway at some point, you said it yourself the first time we met at the Club. Today, tomorrow, in five years...I don't see the difference." he shrugged like he didn't care.
He doesn't, her mind reminded her.
"Alright then...I don't want to be of any trouble to you anymore..." she whispered with her hands behind her back. She hated how little she felt, but he was sendind her away. Kaz Brekker, the boy she'd die for. The boy who had let her felt hope again after years, the boy who made her laugh even when he surely didn't mean it. The boy in who she was willing to put the most important years of her long life, that boy was sending her away without looking back.
"Then go." he said fixing his eyes in hers. She could feel the sharpness of his eyes cutting her chest.
"Fine, then I'll just-" she stopped talking when her eyes landed on the red thing she had seen before. A red handkerchief. Her feet moved on their own will. Before she could register what was happening she had the red handkerchief in her hands, her eyes fixed on the three letters on it. W. V. E.
"Y/n don't-" Kaz stood up trying to stop her but it was too late.
"Why do you have my brother's hand-" she was confused, but then her eyes raised to the boy in front of her. His brown eyes, his dark hair and pale skin, and in a second her mind brough her a memory.
The little boy smiled standing before her. He was at the same height of her belly, but his eyes seemed older.
"I have still things to do, and people I need to find. " the last words said with rage.
"Take care of yourself, boy. Don't let the bad days winning your good ones, there is always light at the end of a tunnel; you only have to walk a little more."
And then another.
"What is you name little boy?"
"K-..." he stopped for a long moment thinking about it. He looked the girl beside him and even if he wanted to trust her he just couldn't after what happened. "Jordie..."
"J-Jordie?" she asked, her voice trembling. "I-...You are not him, aren't you?" he stayed silent, looking her like a statue. "You would have told me if you were him...Kaz you are not the little boy I met eight years ago, right?!"
Her voice raised squeezing the handkerchief in her right fit.
She saw him gulped before answering slowly. "Yes, I am."
She took two huge steps back breathing eavily. He had known me all along. "Why you've never said anything? That day when you approached me, you knew who I was and you offered me a...job..."
"Can you keep a secret?" she asked touching his shoulder with her own. The boy, whose name wasn't obviously Jordie, nodded looking her curiously. She smirked bringin her left hand on her right one and rotating them slowly. A flame came out from her right palm, little but still powerful; red and orange like the handkerchief she had given him before.
The boy's eyes shone marveled looking the flame on her palm. "You are a grisha!"
The truth hit her hard. She raised her eyes in his letting him see the betrayal. "You had always knew what I was. That's why you gave me the job...you didn't care that I was new, you didn't care that I was the girl you met when you was a child. You wanted an Inferni to work for you!"
Every words, every attention, every talk they shared were all lies. Nothing of what he said was true, Kaz Brekker didn't need a reason, he didn't need a reason to give a job to a girl new in town, but it was clear that Kaz Brekker always had a reason. She had been only too foolish to not understand everything before.
She thought she was good to keep a secret, but something like her power couldn't pass unnoticed to Kaz Brekker. She had been a fool to believe he didn't know about her power. It was the only reason he kept her in the Dregs since the beginning.
"An inferni would have been very useful, but you have proved to know how to do your job perfectly without your power. Now, if you want to go you are free to do so. Nothing bind you here." he said, his voice cold as death.
You bound me here, she wanted to shout. But it had been Kaz's plan all along. Making her believe she was different, making her believe he saw her.
"Nothing." she repeated before walking away from his office, leaving the boy alone with the loudly silent that filled the room, staring at the handkerchief that she let fall on the ground, the only thing that had always bound them.
***
The next morning Kaz woke up and knew immediately that something was wrong. He took his cane and walked downstairs to the kitchen where he heard people talking out loud.
"I swear Jesper, when I see him I-" Wylan stop talking in the exact moment Kaz stepped in the room. The red haired boy fixed his eyes on him and before he could understand what was happening Wylan was yelling at him with all the rage he felt. "How dare you coming here like nothing happened!?"
Jesper had to put his arms around Wylan's torso to keep him from throwing himself on Kaz. "Last time I checked this was my Slat."
"And you find amusing sending people away, don't you?" Wylan spoke spitting venom from his mouth. "She needed help and you turned your back at her!"
Now Kaz needed few minutes to make his brain, still sleepy, working to connect the dots. It was clear that Wylan was talking about his sister, who seemed to have played the victim with her own brother.
"If you want to know, merchling, she decided her will herself. She came to me to let me know she was leaving." Kaz shrugged walking toward coffee machine. He didn't have the strengh to face an angry boy if he wasn't properly awake.
"As hell she did. She came to ask you what to do and you sent her away." Kaz let his words running in his head for a while, studying them one by one.
He didn't..."When she came in my office she had already decided." he refused to tell them he had seen her bags ready in her room, he refused to let someone know he cared.
"No Kaz, she didn't." This time Inej spoke, he hadn't even noticed she was there. "She wanted to leave to protect you from her father, but Wylan convinced her to slow down and come to you to ask what to do."
No, no, it was not possible. "When she came in your office she hadn't decided yet. You gave her the answer, Kaz." Jesper spoke keeping his hands on Wylan's shoulders, who now was sat on a chair with his face in his hands.
I would have noticed if she was asking me what to do. She had her bags ready...she came to me to tell me...his thoughs were running wild inside his head.
"That's it? That's what you want?"
Kaz tried to put his thoughs together. He tried to find a logic of what had happened the night before.
"You had always knew what I was. That's why you gave me the job...you didn't care that I was new, you didn't care that I was the girl you met when you was a child. You wanted an Inferni to work for you!"
No, no, no. Everything was so wrong again. He though she was going to leave him and he had let her believe that he had used her all this time. He though she was leaving him...that was the only thing he had needed to loose his mind.
"You didn't know..." whispered Inej surprised.
Kaz couldn't trust his voice enough to not break in front of everyone so he just shoke his head slowly looking the Suli girl in the eyes.
"What have you done..."murmured Jesper rubbing his eyes with his hand. "Alright, if you hurry you should arrive before the schooner leaves."
"Fifth harbour?" Kaz asked with raspy voice.
"Yes! Go!" said the Zemeni boy excited. "I love a dramatic romance."
He didn't let him repeated twice, ready to run if he had to he walked toward the door when Wylan's voice stopped him.
"Brekker, bring her back." Please, was the word the boy let unspoken.
He nodded before running toward the harbour. He took just his cloat at the door, leaving his hat behind. He couldn't let her leave again. He had to arrive in time, and if he didn't he would have swim until he'd found himself on the schooner and ask sorry to her for his infinity dullness.
"Alright then...I don't want to be of any trouble to you anymore..."
She wasn't a trouble, he wanted to shout in the air. She had never been a trouble, he was the wrong one. He was the twisted, crooked, problematic who couldn't stop himself from hurt her everytime.
"My father...I don't want any of you to be in danger because of me."
Even when she was the one in danger, she would think about him first. He didn't see it last night, too focused on accusing her of betrayal. Betrayal of what? She hadn't broken any vows she made. She wasn't bind to him, she own him nothing and surely Ketterdam did nothing to earn her protection.
Since the first day she had stayed on her own will, she had stayed beside him even when he pushed everyone away. That's what got under his skin, her perseverence. She kept fighting for him, she kept seeing good in him and the only thing he had been capable of was making her feel used and unwanted.
He saw the harbour and he barely noticed that he hadn't used his cane. It would have just slowed me, he thought already searching his girl with the eyes.
He owed her an explanation, he owed her a lot of apologies, and then she would decide if she wanted to stay. Kaz swore to everyone who was listening that if Y/n chose to stay in Ketterdam with him, he would have made sure to be worth her choice. He would fight everyday to go trought his boundaries for her, with her. He would be the man she deserved.
"The schooner for Os Kervo." Kaz asked urgently to a man. He knew Y/n, she would find a safe home in Ravka at the Little Palace where the grisha were safe and strong.
"The first one left this morning at four bells, the next it's at the berth twenty-four, leaves in half bell." the man answered.
Kaz didn't think twice and ran toward the schooner with his heart in his throat. Please, saints if you exist make sure she hadn't already left.
He felt pathetic. Never in his life he had ever prayed, but he though that if it gave him a chance to see her again that it was worth a try.
He arrived at the schooner, but looking around he didn't see her. She must be already on board, he though and without difficulty he went on the ship.
There wasn't many people, but from what Kaz knew the grisha girl could have been already in her room and there was no way to find her before that schooner left.
He felt a shiver in his spine, telling him that she was close, but he didn't know where to look. Right, left, he looked everywhere. People around him looked him worried.
She can't be gone, he kept reapeting in his head like a mantra.
"Came here to bring me back to my father?" a voice said from above him. "How much did he offer to you? Must be a lot to affront a grisha alone."
His heart missed a beat and when he looked over his head he though he might start to believe in saints.
She was there, perched on one of the boom. Her hood was up hiding her face like she always did when she was out of their zone. She was a wanted grisha now, and he felt a grip on his heart at the though that she was used to that life of a runner.
You are not alone anymore, Fire Girl, he though vividly.
"I thought you had decided to leave..." he said. It didn't sound like an apologize at all...Damn Saints, there were a bilions things he wanted to say her, and yet his throat felt dry when he could talk.
"I did." her voice was sharped as a blade and cold as ice.
He gulped, I deserve this. "I know..." He had a flashback of their first conversation at the Crows Club, and cold shivers ran in his blood. I will not make the same mistake twice. "I should have told you who I was since the beginning."
"Maybe if I knew I didn't have to hide my power you could have had your personal inferni sooner." it was his fault. He had let her believe that he wanted her just for her power, but it wasn't true. Kaz Brekker kept her with the Dregs because he couldn't bare the though of her being hurt or threated.
"Could you get off from that boom? Please..." the last word burned in Kaz's throat like fire. It wasn't easy for him to say out loud his feelings, but he knew it would have been the only thing to make her stay. He owed her the truth.
She scoffed and jumped, landing in front of him with the lightness of a feather. Crossing her arms over her chest she studyed him from under her hood, waiting for him to speak first.
You want me sto stay, you have to say it, her posture told him.
"I saw your bags in your room, I though you wanted to leave me, the Dregs. I would understand if it what you wish, but you have to know that I was angry. Angry because I though you didn't trust me. You had just packed all your things without talking to me first, I though...I though you..." said those words Kaz brekker, a voice said in his mind. "I though you used me as a protection, nothing else. And when you showed up in my office I though you were going to say me you were leaving. No question, no mouners."
She stayed silent for a bit, surely surprised by his words. He couldn't see her whole face from his height, and he needed to use all his self control to not take it and push it down.
"The only reason I decided to leave was because my father knew about you. I knew he would have used you against me if I stayed, and I couldn't put you in danger just because I wanted to be selfish." her voice had softened a bit, but it was still sharp as she was ready for any attack from him. "Wylan convinced me that you would have helped me, that you would have been willing to fight for me. But when I come to you, I find Dirtyhands planning my departure. And what I find out? That you kept me under your roof just because you knew I was a grisha."
"It's not true." he stopped her firmly. "I knew you were a grisha, but never in my head I though about using you for your power."
"Then what other reason to keep the truth about our first meeting from me?"
Now it's the moment. Don't let your shame eat you alive, put yourself together and take your Fire Girl back.
"Because I was ashamed of the man I became. Because if you knew who I was you would have seen that the little boy you met eight years ago doesn't exist anymore. You would have seen that I failed you..." saying finally those words after a year left him lighter.
She gasped softly. It's not true, I can still see that little boy right in front me... "No, I failed you. You were a child Kaz, you had no faults. I should've stayed with you."
She could see the surprise on Kaz's face when she spoke those words. She had time to think that morning, at the little boy she left alone in the streets of Ketterdam. The boy who had kept her secrets all those years and never blackmailed her.
"I don't think something would have changed. I chose my path." he said with his raspy voice. How many nights he had dreamt about that moment? When he would finally speak with her, when the little boy and the Fire Girl would meet again.
"Becasue no one was there for you. Beccause you were alone. But if someone would have taken care of you, if someone would have showed you another way, maybe everything would have been different." maybe you would have been different.
She wasn't disappointed in what Kaz had became, she knew that everything he did it was to survive at the Barrel. She was proud that he had found the strengh to fight and live; Y/n would change nothing of the man she had in front of her.
The captain of the schooner announced that they were ready to leave and Y/n took a deep breath. "You should go..."
"Come with me." his mind, his rational part stopped working. There were nothing to brake his tongue. "Eight years ago you asked me if I wanted you to stay with me, and I said no. Today I'm asking you to stay in Ketterdam, with me, with the Crows. We cant-...I can't loose you. Not again."
Her heart started to beat faster like a roller coaster. Was Kaz Brekker the one who was talking in front of her? The Bastard of the Barrel was asking her to stay with him. You are going to put him in danger, a voice in her mind reminded her.
She looked Ketterdam behind him, as she could see her father's house.
Kaz saw the shift in her face's direction, and immediately understood what was thinking that mind of her. He rose a gloved hand in front of him taking her by surprise.
"If you wish to go to Ravka I will not stop you, but if you give me a chance I'll try everyday to be the man worth to stay by your side. And I promise you..." he took a step forward making her gasp. "I promise you we will take down everyone who threat us and we'll make them know the real meaning of the word suffer."
That's the Dirtyhands I fell for, she though smiling brightly. She took his hand firmly feeling his fingers closing around hers. "Just one condition." He raised an eyebrow to say 'continue please'. "Jan Van Eck is mine, and he's not going to die until I say so."
She knew that Kaz wasn't the only one who had changed in those years, and there were no reasons to hide it. The grisha girl who lived in the shadows and the little boy who was scared would never meet again, both had died when the world had turned its back to them. Both had raised like phoenix and became stronger.
"The deal is the deal, Fire Girl." he smirked walking with her toward the berth. The schooner was already leaving and there was a little void between the berth and the schooner, so Kaz squeezed her hand and they both jumped. When their feet touched the berth he didn't notice he was laughing with her. Her hood was over her forehead and he couldn't hold it anymore, he stood in front of her with the steady hands of a magician and gently lowered it, feeling the hurge to see her smile again. "No secrets anymore."
"No secrets anymore." she replied keeping her eyes in his.
It was their promise to start from the beginning. Their past was a beautiful story to remember, but they would fight for their future side by side, and little did she know that for all the time she hadn't spoken with Kaz Brekker, Bastard of the Barrel. But the boy in front of her, with the light of hope in his dark eyes was the normal, simple Kaz Rietveld.
A/N:OH MY GOODNESS WE ARE HERE! This is the end of the story of our lovely, brave Fire Girl and our little, cute Kaz. I think I can cry... This is the chapter that most I love of the series and I think you can see why! Writing it was so emotional and still so easy, I knew from the first moment how I wanted their story to end and how I wanted to write it. I have many ideas for a future book with those two idiots, but in the mean time...would you like a bonus chapter where we are gonna see how they're managing they're "relationship"? Maybe where he tells her his real name...đ but now tell me, what was the part that you most liked? Would have you made the same decisions as them? MY CHAT AND REQUESTS ARE OPEN SOO I'm gonna wait you there ;)
p.s. : who recognize the scene from an old tv series for young I took ispiration for the fight and the departure? đ
Masterlist | Series Masterlist
You were sitting at a stool in the compoundâs kitchen when a familiar face walked in. Bucky had eventually explained to you that this was a sort of âheadquartersâ for the team. You felt a bit foolish having realized you never kept up much with these mighty heroes but you were eager to learn now. So far, you hadnât encountered anyone you didnât personally know on this famed team. Even now your eyes landed on the welcoming yet worried face of Steve.
âMorning,â you said, waving your fork before stabbing some of your scrambled eggs. Bucky had insisted on cooking for you despite your assurance you were fine but his cooking skills were....subpar. Still, nothing was inedible and you needed your strength back.
Steve reciprocated the greeting, saying your name with much excitement. âHow are you feeling?â He added while making his way to the coffee pot. You chewed your eggs borderline viciously as you debated on an answer.Â
âIâm okay.â You gave a shrug, staring down at your plate. Part of you wanted to let more out but you ignored it.
Steve came back around to the counter, standing on the other side across from you. He held his coffee cup firmly, nervously almost. You could feel him watching you. That excitement he had said your name with felt like it was evaporating from the room slowly.
âThatâs⊠good,â Steve said. âIf you need someone to talk to we have plenty of resources and - and I wanted to say Iâm sorry.â
You peaked a glance at him, confused. You placed your fork on the counter. âSorry? Why are you sorry?â
âI worry I led them right to you,â he explained, âlike you two were separated for a reason.â
You frowned. You hadnât thought about this - heck, you hadnât thought about blaming anyone other than the disgusted men with such joyous evil looks in their eyes.
âSteve, I donât think there was any way anyone couldâve prevented this.â You pushed your plate of food away. âThey had their sights set. They had a plan, an optimism. It may have just been the soulmate experience in this case,â you sighed. Steve mumbled your name, shaking his head, but you continued, âAnd thatâs fine. Love doesnât come easy, right?â
âBeing kidnapped is not part of being in love.â
âYeah, well, you donât have an ex-assassin for a soulmate.â
Steveâs jaw went slack. You were staring him down now, practically begging him to say one more thing.Â
âItâs going to be okay,â Steve finally settled on. Ever the cool, calm, and collected star-spangled man. âYou will recover and itâll never happen again, we can promise you that.â His voice was serious as if every word ended with a period. You felt tears starting to well in your eyes. You wanted to say something, maybe ask for a hug or just⊠you didnât know what, so you just sat there, slumped in your chair like a defeated puppy.
âEverything okay here?â A sudden voice made you jump. You and Steve turned towards the kitchen doorway where Bucky was standing, arms crossed, worry etched all over his face. It seemed to become his permanent expression now. Even when it was just you two, he always appeared on edge.
You nodded, turning back to collect your plate and take it to the sink. âWe were just chatting.â You didnât see the look you just knew Steve and Bucky were sharing.
When you turned back around to face the pair, Bucky had crossed the room, almost close enough to now be hovering over you. You flinched when he went to put a comforting hand on your shoulder. You didnât know why as you clearly didnât think he was a threat but hadnât you seen how threatening he could be? You lowered your head, fighting off the thoughts. He wasnât like that to you and he had proven it time and time again. Why was it suddenly different?
Before either of the men could comment on your sudden hesitation, you said, âIâm going to go take a shower.â They just nodded, letting you exit.
***
When you got out of the shower and back into the room the team had lent you and Bucky for the time being, Bucky was waiting patiently on the bed. You lingered around the space, picking out some pajamas to wear, acting as normal as you could. You took in the space, still amazed by it. It was fairly large with top-notch amenities, including a luscious bed, spacious dresser, and television from technology you werenât sure existed for the general public. It even had access to your own grand bathroom, saving you some war flashbacks of the communal restrooms at college.Â
You dipped back into the bathroom and got changed. While your intimacy with Bucky hadnât been on the shy side, you werenât in that kind of mood right now. Rightfully so, you would say.
Emerging once more, you noticed Bucky had made a sort of resting area for you on the bed. Your side was surrounded by blankets upon blankets and soft pillows. He even had a movie queued up for you two to watch. He laid waiting, his eyes practically begging you to come to him. After giving your hair a final wring, you gave in and crawled into the soft bed, letting all of you just melt into it.
âHow are y-,â
âBucky,â you sighed, turning towards him. He was laying on his side, staring down at your curled-up form. âPlease donât ask how I am.â
He nodded. âI get it, doll. Iâm just worried about you. You seemed alright yesterday but todayâŠâ Yeah. Youâd taken a dive. Your whole mood had shifted. Heck, your views on the world had shifted. As dramatic as it seemed, you were having a hard time snapping back. You werenât even gone for over two days and yet the smallest thing...
âI think itâs just all settling in,â you admitted, your voice barely above a whisper. âMaybe it was just shock yesterday or something but realizing what all happened⊠Gosh, this probably seems so foolish to you.â
Bucky began shaking his head profusely. As gently as he could, he took your hand in his. You welcomed the action as you shifted under the makeshift mountain of blankets. âDonât do that, honey. Donât try to dismiss it or think what youâre feeling is foolish. You went through something so terrifying. Youâre allowed to react to it.â He took a deep breath. âWhen we talked yesterday, I think I thought maybe they hadnât gotten to you. That nothing had happened that would leave you torn up but you saw⊠a lot.â
You knew he wasnât talking about just being exposed to Hydra and their twisted selves. âI did,â you hesitantly agreed. âAnd I fear itâs going to take a lot to recover.â Your words felt like you were delivering punch after punch to Bucky but where were you going to get if you werenât honest?
âAnything you need, sweetheart,â he mumbled, his thumb drawing soft patterns on the back of your hand, sending shivers through you. âIâll do anything to make it better.â
You nodded, averting your gaze to where your hands were connected. Your hand was so tense but you hadnât even realized you were squeezing his. You relaxed it slightly and Buckyâs motions stopped.
âBucky,â you mumbled, âcan I ask you something?â
He hummed in response.
âWhat do I offer you?â
You could feel Buckyâs eyes staring you down. No doubt a concerned frown was playing on his lips. âWhat are you getting at here, honey?â
You shifted uncomfortably. âWhen I was⊠you know⊠the - the older man said that he didnât understand why we would be paired together. They were determined to figure out what I offer you. What makes me so special.â A beat. âI really donât know the answer.â
Bucky sighed, shaking his head. You glanced up at him again, his eyes now holding a different kind of anger. You felt bad for doubting yourself but the insecurity from the words of some random guy settled into your brain.Â
After a thoughtful moment, Bucky spoke, âI donât think youâll ever fully understand what you give, not just to me, honey, but the world. Youâre so fearless. Youâre incredibly understanding. Not to mention how compassionate and bright you areâŠâ His voice cracked slightly, breaking your heart a little. âYou force me to remember that Iâm not alone and I donât have to be. And I just really hope I do the same for you.â
You could feel your own tears forming as you shifted just a bit closer to your soulmate. You werenât quite touching but you could still feel his presence. It was as comfortable as you could get right now and Bucky seemed to respect that.Â
âI hope Iâll be okay,â you confessed. âEventually.âÂ
It quite amazed you how fast stuff could change within yourself. You woke up from being rescued with the more extravagant hopes and overwhelming relief of just making it out alive. But then you remembered the price of you making it out alive. What you had to witness to get there. And then the thoughts of actually being back in that position rushed over you. Needless to say, it was weird. Simply weird. Unlike anything you had encountered before.Â
Bucky soon nodded, encouragingly. You hated putting anything else on him but he had become part of the memories now. It was one thing to see him in dreams and another to watch it just feet away from you.Â
With a choking sob, he said, âMe too, doll.â
"You dont have to do this. There is another way. Just give me a chance to try."
"Kill me? You can't."
"How you still sane?"
"I am sorry, but I cannot lose you."
"She save me. I own her as much. The first time someone did something to me without gaining nothing in turn."
"Love had nothing to do with that."
"Kill me if that is what you desire."
"There is enough blood spilled today."
"Are you going to try to kill me, old friend? Again?"
"He will fail."
"I already knew."
"I should have died in his place."
"Its my fault she died. I got us in this situation in first place."
"They killed my beloved. And, for that, your kingdom will burn."
"I lied."
"He went to far."
"He was never the same after the captivity."
"Then bring me his heart."
"See, little one? I am not your enemy."
"You ignored the cries of grief and refuse to help those who needed it the most."
"This place...has Rules that cannot be broken."
"That foolish and odd thing you call love."
"Many still call you an Usurper, you know."
"Control your subordinade, or I will put a muzzle on that dog."
"Remember me now, old friend? We were never strangers. Your memory is the price for my foolishness."
"I am aware of my actions and ready to suffer its consequences."
âI used to have wings. A long time ago I called all the birds kin.â
"You choose your own path."
"Your serve a cruel king, my friend. A pity you are such an loyal dog."
"We cannot be friends, my family are an butch of power hungry dogs, considering your ranking, they will use even me against you."
"Take me instead."
"And they once called me mad."
"Do not involve her into this."
"You don't trust me?"
"He's going mad."
"I did this?"
"I will have to kill you at some point, you know."
"Love is what killed my sister."
"She did this to protect her child. I can hardly blame her."
"You are just an replacement. They will do to you the same what they did to me."
"You were send to kill me the first time we meet and now here you are, my beloved, rulling at my side."
"He called me cruel so many times, told everyone that I would turn on them and bring destruction in my wake. After it all I don't understand why he was so surprised when I started to belive on it too."
"I remember that night, with only the moon as witness, I nearly died at the hands of the man I once called an brother."
"I betrayed you because I want to help."
"Your mother is an traitor. You should be grateful you are even alive."
"I am not going to fight you, you saved my life do many times, my dear friend, its only fair for you to take it."
"Its was all a joke for you? Our friendship? Do you even thought it would end different? You were using me all this time!"
"I never killed her. Its was you all this time!"
"I wont let more of my people die on your mad quest!"
"I am your prisioner then?"
"It isn't such an lovely irony? To fall in love with the spawn of my greatest enemy?"
"Your mother defeated me once and toke something that belonged to me. Its only fair for me to do the same."
"I will go with you. Let them go and we will be together forever."
"An coward. Thats what I am, I was tired of my siblings fighting against each other, I didn't wanted...I couldn't take a side. So I ran and hide."
"If the King found out who you were, he would kill you."
"I thought you were dead this whole time. They hid you from me. You don't even know who I am, don't you?"
"Her own people did this to her!"
"You existence is a threat to us. She tried to hide you, to protect you from us, that foolish girl. You are an abomination and, for that, you will die."
"I was created for this, an artificial immortal being with the purpose of keeping you in check, my personality and abilities all to match yours. You were too powerful, too volatile and after your lover's death and the Kingdom's massacre...the others believed that giving the Shadow god an true friend would be the best."
âI never want this. I did not have a choice! My family were planning this from the beginning, to betray the only friend I ever had.â
âHe killed my peopleâs rightful ruler and call himself our lord. I was raised to serve the noble family since birth and now I am forced to serve another liege as my lady spend her days locked as an hostage somewhere. I should hate him, but somehow I canât.â
âYou keep your word. For that, you will live.â
âThe moment that odd fellow showed up in the realm, I knew they were trouble. I warned His Grace, but he did not listen.â
âYour people betrayed you and left you behind, they didnât even botter trying to rescue you. Yet, you insist in remaining loyal to them.â
âThey expect me to kill the person I love the most. Tyrant or not, heâs my friend.â
âWe may be cousins, but we are very different. She seeks revenge for our dynasty and the return of what she thinks is rightful hers, I just want it all to stop.â
âYou have been here before. You just donât remember.â
âRemember the first time we meet? You asked me to kill you.â
âShe disobeyed the Laws. If they were to found out, she would be stricken down.â
âYou used those peopleâs trust and mocks them.â
âI did this for you! For us!â
âGiven time and you still become corrupted like those beasts you slay.â
âHeâs one of them.â
âI was never in control of my life. A mere pawn, a weapon. And yet, steel does not weep.â
âYou are my creation, never truly an real person.â
âDo tell me: which one of us you serve?â
âYou saved me once, a long time ago. You may not remember me, I never forgot you. I am simply repaying the favour.â
âThey are my creation. My responsability.â
âThis isnât what I wanted.â
âThis is my answer. I hope I was clear enough.â
âWe are should have been enemies, you know.â
âI donât mind if you hate me. At least you will be alive to do it.â
âI killed for you! I betrayed my people and family for you! Yet you do this to me!â
âYou tried to kill. Yet, I canât bring myself to blame you.â
âYou hurt me first.â
âI just wanted to be free. Why is everyone so against it? Leave me in peace!â
âHe attacked me, therefore I decide if I press charges or not. He wonât be punished.â
âAfter everything you didâŠyou want me to forgive you? To help you? To forget and pretend nothing happened? Are you mad?â
âFriends donât come with shackles. I am sorry. You are not worth my ruination.â
âWe are a dying family, those things are in better hands with you. They are useless for someone not of blood.â
âMy subordinade disobeyed a direct order. I wished for peace between us, but he let his vengeful thoughts overcome common sense.â
âHis lordshipâs a fool. His refusal of helping them after everything they did to us will not be without reprisal. So I had to take action.â
âDonât try to pretend you care. Youâre just doing this because you are afraid of going back to your little cage. To pay for your crimes. Isnât it?â
âYou canât have both.â
âI loved him and I still do.â
âYou canât make him fight the duel! Heâs not ready! They are going to die!â
âYou said sheâd be safe!â
âIâd not kill that thing while wearing my brotherâs face.â
âYou know him?â âHis predecessor.â
âI wonât allow this to happen. Not again.â
âYouâŠare like me.â
"You are one of us. No matter how much you try to deny it."
âYou couldnât kill me when I was a child, not like you did to my family, instead you toke me in. I wonder with you can kill me now.â
âOf course I killed him. We are at war. What do you wanted me to do?â
âIts not longer safe here. We need to leave. Now.â
âYou erased my mind everytime I strayed away from the path you wanted. So many times and yet you never got rid of my rebellious spirit.â
âYou arenât worth her forgiveness. But I shall her grant request.â
âI was trying to heal you! To make you better.â
âSheâs no longer yours to torment.â
âStop! Let me explain!â âYour monster! Let me go!â
âYou disobeyed my ordersâŠI am proud of you.â
âYou vouch for this man? After everything he did to you? Who can we trust heâs truly no longer with them?â
âShe isnât mad! Never was! My mother was just trying to protect me! From you!â
She closed her eyes. âIts only fair.â
âWhy do you hate her more than you love me?â
âYou are not a monster. Trust me, I know plently of them. You are just a boy. You shouldnât have to pay for something that is out of your control.â
âI didnât wanted you to see me like this.â
âWe never loved each other in first place.â
âI did what I had to do. Your training is over. You are free to go.â
âI choose to stay.â
âI am merely searching for people like me.â His voice echoed on the now nearly empty room as turns to his prisioner. âLike us.â
âYour people must stay away from mine. You know why. You remember what happened last time someone disobeyed those rules.â
âN-no. I canâtâŠI canât do this! I am not doing this! I have never disobeyed your orders! Yet when you tell me to kill a innocent. I..I wonât.â
âMy life is yours to do what you desiree.â
âMother always loved you more than me, her own child.â
âThat why you hated me so much? Because I am a proof of unfaithfulness?
"I took this burden and all its darkness so it doesnât befall for you, my dear child. I never stop loving you.â
âThe time works far different here. You were sleeping this whole time. For you, we saw each other yesterday. I came to this world first and time passed since when. I changed, my friend.â
"Kill you? Why would I do that? Your father may have been my greastest enemy for, but your mother was still my daughter."
"Yet you abandoned them. A mother disgusted enough by her own children to leave forever."
"If you hate humans so much, why did you fucked one in first place?"
"We were raised together. Regardless of what he became now, of what happened for him to do this, he always will be my brother."
"You abandoned her because she did not gave you the powerful heir you desired. Just...me."
"Did my brother dragged you into this? My own child...is my greastest enemy?"
"I am not letting a family member follow this path, not again."
"All of this was done in my name."
"Her blood? He's your blood too!"
"Kill you, boy? You misunderstood my goals, I was searching my sucessor."
"Its was no coincidence, [name] planned everything since the beginning, to seduce and ruin the life of her mother's ex-lover and murderer."
"You will be the last."
"You know you are wrong. Yet you dare demand such cruel punishment? Over an insult?"
"Such a irony, the child our dear father abandoned so many years ago now have his attention. Don't you recognize me, brother? Do you know me even? Out dad didn't even told you about it, hn?"
"Just because he saved you, that does not make him a good person."
"I drove you away not because I hated you, I did it because I wanted you to run."
"Did you ever loved me truly? Or it was all a lie? Just for a bet?"
