anyway i used to think id publish a poetry book but i dont know if i’ll ever get there lol. i have so many and only a handful are really any good but a lot of them are so angry and bitter it’d be kind of damning to put them out there. i like this one though
anger was my first friend; she slept beside me, she braided my hair, she bandaged my bruises.
she told me i was special. her favourite word was “deserving.”
i tried to bury her, but she came back; with cold fingers around my neck, no hair left to hide it, her distorted ghost taught me that “special” can be bad, too.
she sleeps beside me, she holds me down in the bath, she paints red over my wrists. she tells me “deserving” can be bad, too.

Every few sentences I'll look at my work and be like 'man....I have got to stop taking this so seriously' and then I'll continue to take it too seriously (This is affecting my work output greatly)

Soul Mate AU
Soulmarks: tattoo like in appearance, soul marks form on all involved parties when the youngest member reaches their age of majority. Touching someone's soulmark without their consent is considered incredibly taboo and violating. Touching someone’s soulmark when baring the matching mark is supposed to be incredibly pleasurable for all parties involved, more so if it is the two marks that are touching.
ref link, tho I'm gonna put the same soulmark descriptions under each character anyway
Contents: DoL relationships; Avery's anger issues; public stuff; doctor/patiant, mildly; talk of cutting (Kylar's section); teacher/student, mildly; farm fuckery (aka, Remy's whole fucking section); cat Bailey AU; FUCT Robin AU; Yandere Avery AU; Eldritch PC AU
Words: 2608
Alex
(93)
Geometric shapes. Bold, dark lines. Elbow to shoulder on their right arm.
Loves touching your soulmark. Loves you touching their soulmark. Loves all of it.
Higher dominance Alex is likely to brush their hand down your soul mark whenever they have the chance. Even if it might be considered “rude” to do so in front of others.
Lower dominance waits for more private moments. A teasing stroke over your mark while shielded from prying eyes, shivering if you return the favor and ghost a hand over their mark.
Loves cuddling in the morning, pressed against each other, absentmindedly tracing the lines of your matching marks.
Avery
(153)
Thin, delicate, lace like lines across their collar bones. Ends in thick, jagged lines going down their sternum
God, there’s so much pressure on you to act absolutely perfect if you actually want Avery to let you walk around with a matching mark.
That said, they like touching your mark.
At low anger, they’re tender, tips of their fingers gliding over the marks.
They may even let you touch their marks, though not often. It’s very rare for Avery to allow it. Something about you touching their marks makes them feel out of sorts, out of control. So, it’s only when they’re drained from work that they indulge in the lazy pleasure of allowing you to take care of them in this way. A hand tucked between their legs and your tongue tracing their marks.
High rage Avery presses down on your marks hard enough to make your vision blur, pain mixed into the act that would normally bring pleasure. But, you won’t make them do that too often, will you?
Bailey
(215)
Thin lines that crisscrosses their lower stomach in an intricate pattern and circles around their upper thighs.
It’s a stupid situation, trying to wrangle one of their brats in their own fucking office, it that’s Bailey’s life: stupid situation after stupid fucking situation.
Except when you headbutt their stomach, shirt having ridden up from the physical activity, and your skin brushes over the marks that had only recently bloomed across their skin, it somehow gets worse.
What do you mean that the pain they brace themself for never comes? Or, it does, but mostly covered in strange euphoria.
But, Bailey knows what that means, new anger sparking within them and fueling their ability to pin you down, to tear at your clothes, to expose your mark.
Your mark that matches Bailey’s.
And they press down on it, thumbs digging into the soft of your thighs as you squirm under them. They hope you feel more pain than pleasure.
They have to keep you, they think. Who knows how you could be used against them if others find out?
And what are you to them, anyway? Important, one way or another, apparently.
So, fuck you.
Varey rarely touches your marks after that and forbids you from touching their’s.
Yet, sometimes, you’ll wake up with Bailey’s hands pressed against the mark, palm flat and fingers splayed, dark eyes fixed on that point of contact.
Briar
(108)
One thick line running over the knuckles on their right hand.
Oh, new lil star walking into Briar’s lovely establishment with marks that match the one that just recently bloomed across their knuckles. How interesting.
Enjoys taking your hand in theirs, ringed thumb rolling over the mark on your knuckles, watching you shiver at such a simple action.
Especially likes touching your marks in public and letting others see how it affects you.
That said, not keen on you doing the same to them. When especially tense, they don't mind the pad of your thumb following the line across the ridges of their knuckles while in their office. Lets their head tilt back, eyes shutting as their muscles relax.
Black Wolf
(83)
Jagged marks under their left eye
It's actually quite easy to overlook their mark, looking almost like a scar.
Brushing your thumb over the mark has Black Wolf relaxing, regardless of if they’re the alpha or not.
When they’re the alpha, they’ll climb on top of you, rutting against your thigh as you trace the mark.
When you’re the alpha, they roll over, wanting you to straddle them as your fingers linger.
As for them, they like licking your mark, regardless of how close to your eye it is.
Darryl
(88)
A thick ring around their left pinky
So nervous when they realize they share a mark with you.
Covers up their own mark and it takes them a while to build up the courage to tell you that you have matching marks.
Very gentle the first time they touch your mark, asking if it’s okay in a voice barely above a whisper, fine tremor running through their hands.
Nervous when you first touch their mark, but doesn’t regret it a bit.
Likes hooking your pinkies together, a cross between holding hands and a pinky promise.
Doren
(103)
Looks like the letters of a dead language encircling their right wrist.
Will not let you touch it in public, and that goes double when at school.
Also won’t touch your mark in public.
Well, they might if it’s to calm you down if you’re having a particularly rough day, though behind the privacy of a closed door or secluded corner.
Very gentle when they touch your mark, brushing over your wrist like it’s something fragile, breakable.
Only really allows you to touch their mark when at their apartment, though if you’re holding hands then it’s easy to pretend that it’s an accident if you press your marks together and make Doren stumble a little.
Eden
(139)
Thick, almost painful looking lines over their left breast and going up their neck. Stops under their jaw.
Don’t touch their marks.
Don’t do it.
Even though you bare their match, their mirror, do not touch Eden’s marks.
At least, not until they trust you.
Even then, you’re risking your ass to touch Eden’s marks.
They like it, though it feels incredibly vulnerable, thus, don’t do it.
You can get away with it during sex, usually. Unless they’re punishing you. Then you’re gonna get slapped.
Also more likely to get away with touching their marks when they’re falling asleep, little shiver of pleasure running through them as they drift off.
All this said, they’re touching your marks whenever the fuck they want.
Especially loves grabbing you by the chin and rubbing their thumb along the marks under your jaw. Double so if you’ve been acting like a brat. A good reminder that you’re theirs, no matter what.
Great Hawk
(59)
Small intersecting circles under their right eye.
Please touch their marks.
So proud of their marks now that they’ve come in and they adore you paying any attention to them.
Chirps every time you touch them, all puffed up.
Often nuzzles your marks. Loves brushing against them with their feathers.
Favorite time to have their marks touched or to touch your marks is when flying together.
Gwylan
(75)
Very complex markings running down the length of their spine.
It’s rare for their marks to be visible and is at a loss for words when they find out you wear their match.
Doesn’t really like them touched, to be honest. It’s weirdly intense, with it being along their spine and all.
Only really likes it if you run a feather light finger down their spine. Not too much pressure, just enough for them to feel it.
Also not big on touching your marks, either.
Harper
(102)
Thin, barely noticeable spirals on their tongue.
God they're so fucking ecstatic to touch your mark at all fucking times.
Every time you see Harper, they wanna check your tongue, rubbing their thumb over the marks.
You're really lucky they haven't yet found a way to do away with the gloves yet when in the hospital.
If you're ever in the asylum, they're not wearing gloves.
Would adore you touching their marks if they weren't on their tongue. Makes it kinda hard to remain “professional.”
That said, when they get to kiss you or coach you into kissing them, they nearly cream their pants from your soul marks touching.
Kylar
(80)
Soft, faded looking lines that weave up their right arm like tendrils. Starts at their wrist, ends at their elbow.
Touch!
Kylar's!
Marks!
Please!
Touching each others marks calms them down so fast.
Aggravates their jealousy like nothing else if you refuse to let them touch your marks.
Always gets a soft look in their eyes when touching marks.
Babbles about it when hysterical, rubbing your marks almost painfully hard. Why are you acting like this when there's proof right here that you are meant for them?
Maybe they should make sure your marks are deeper, more prominent, with their knife…
Leighton
(109)
Bands around their right knee
They’ll know you’re soulmates long before you do.
And they’re not telling you, either.
Likes the spark of fear in your eyes when their hand first cups your knees, the confusion when pleasure runs up your spine when their thumb brushes the mark.
Lets you stew, thinking something wrong  with you, like you’re a pervert for feeling pressure when Leighton, someone who isn’t your soulmate, touches your mark.
Would probably let you go on like that for a while, only revealing it as a power play.
Doesn’t want you just randomly grabbing at their mark, but likes when you place your hand on their mark when giving them head.
Mason
(77)
Looks like gills on either side of their neck.
Don’t touch their marks.
Don’t touch them at school.
Don’t look at them.
Don’t acknowledge they’re your soulmate.
Their authority as a teacher is already undermined by their age and now this? One of their students is their soulmate?
Please say this is a bad joke.
But, at the pond, when they’ve gotten to know you, maybe.
Lets their eyes close as your fingers brush over them.
Hesitant on touching your marks but will if you insist.
Remy
(161)
Small, dark spots behind their left ear. Some might say it's a cow print pattern.
Fuck you.
They’ll never notice it if you drop into the riding school. Nor if you’re just Alex’s silly little partner.
No, the only way Remy finds you’re soulmate is during new cattle intake.
And they’re pissed.
They’re always wearing their gloves, so at least you don’t react when they find it.
They’ll keep you in the dark about your matching marks.
And then they keep you isolated until they figure out what the fuck to do with you.
Obedient cattle will find out eventually when they tug their gloves off, cupping your face and letting their thumb brush over your marks while you eat an apple out of their other hand.
Disobedient cattle find out when Remy has finally had it with you, ripping off their gloves and pressing their thumb against your marks so hard that it's more pain than pleasure, making your knees buckle and your will to fight flicker.
Regardless, they won’t let you touch their marks.
Robin
(85)
Thin, soft, intricate swirls in the middle of their chest.
IT’S THEIR FAVORITE THING.
It’s so comforting, their best friend sharing their soulmark.
Huge boost of confidence anytime one of you touches the others marks.
Very flustered the first time due to the placement but gets more comfortable with it as time goes on.
Not big on touching soulmarks in public but only because of the placement.
Low confidence Robin might be persuaded to touch soulmarks in semi public areas.
High confidence Robin might try to persuade you to touch soulmarks in semi public areas.
Sydney
(98)
Two thin lines starting at their shoulder blades and ending at their hips.
Even though soulmarks are considered a divine symbol of love between partners, Sydney is hesitant to touch yours or let you touch theirs.
The higher their purity, the more likely they are to wait until you two are bound by the temple before touching soulmarks.
The more corrupt they become, the more likely it is that you can coax Sydney into taking off their shirt and letting you trace the marks on their back.
At their most corrupt, Sydney will slip their hand up the back of your shirt in somewhat public places to stroke over your marks.
Whitney
(126)
Fluid, swirling lines on the inside of their right thigh.
I hope you like wearing skirts ‘cause Whitney wants you in one at all times so they can hike it up and grab at your marks.
And they will do that wherever they feel like.
At low dominance, they’ll stop if you tell them to at least?
Also, if you don’t wear a skirt, they’ll try to get their hands down your pants whenever they feel like messing with you and your marks.
And hey, Whitney is your soulmate. Shouldn’t you want to do shit that’ll make ‘em happy?
That’s what they’ll say, anyway.
As for touching their marks, they’ll only let you when alone.
Even at low dominance, they’ll try to smack your hands away if you try to touch their marks when out public.
Wren
(89)
Small swirls on their left ankle. Easily mistaken for an actual tattoo instead of a soul mark.
Likely to kick off their shoes and press their foot against your mark under the table while playing blackjack as a way to distract you.
Gets flustered if you do it back to them, but tries to hide it behind wide smiles and low laughs.
Does sometimes daydream about having you laying under them, holding your foot, thumb brushing over your marks before dragging your leg over their shoulder and ducking down to give you head.
But, as your relationship is, it’s limited to playing footsie during card games.
BONUS
Cat Bailey
(83)
A bit better about touching marks but still isn't big on it.
Purrs every time you brush against their marks but don't ever mention that you noticed.
It's really when they go into heat/rut that things change. They're more likely to grab at your marks, to press you against their's.
Don't ever mention how sometimes you'll wake up to find Bailey resting with their cheek against the marks on your stomach, eyes closed, purr rumbling in their chest and tail flicking lazily.
Fuct Robin
(68)
Less into soul mark touching, really.
Sure, they still like it, but it makes them feel out of sorts, like they’re still the fresh 18 year old in a cramped orphanage room fumbling around with their partner they were when you first got your matching marks.
Though, they’re much more touchy with your marks. Likes sleeping with a hand pressed to the marks on your chest. Stops nightmares.
Yandere Avery
(89)
Hope you don't get cold easily because Avery isn't allowing you to wear anything that covers your marks when you're home.
Out and about, they make you cover up more, but any passerby can tell your marks match. What, you didn't think you were leaving the house without them, did you?
Touchs your marks all the time: right when they wake up, when they first get home after work, before falling asleep. All. The. Time.
Also more likely to touch your marks out in public, but only very rarely.
Eldritch PC
(71)
The soul marks have added tentacle motifs now, lol.
More intense for when your partner touches you.
Doesn’t mind the intensity:
Alex
Darryl
Doren
Eden
Great Hawk
Leighton
Robin
Pure Sydney
Cat Bailey
Yandere Avery
Less likely to touch because of the intensity:
Avery
Bailey
Briar
Black Wolf
Gwylan
Mason
Remy
Whitney
Fuct Robin
Likes the intensity:
Harper
Kylar
Corrupt Sydney
Whitney
Wren
Black Wolf
Great Hawk

"But this characterization confuses IA’s practices with traditional library lending of print books. IA does not perform the traditional functions of a library; it prepares derivatives of Publishers’ Works and delivers those derivatives to its users in full. That Section 108 allows libraries to make a small number of copies for preservation and replacement purposes does not mean that IA can prepare and distribute derivative works en masse and assert that it is simply performing the traditional functions of a library." Statistics of Apollo's Lovers
I was wondering just how unfortunate of a love-life our boy Apollo had, so - as one does - I did the research, math, and writing of said love-life.
such is the life of an adhd teen :)
In total, there are 62 people on this list. I have them separated into eight groups; Immortal, Immortal & Rejected, Lived, Died, Rejected & Died, Rejected & Cursed, Rejected & Lived, and who were Rejected by Apollo
Disclaimer: I am not a historian nor an expert in Greek Mythology, I am just a very invested nerd in Mythology, and in Apollo's mythology in general, and got curious about what his rap sheet actually looks like.
Sidenote: There will be some "lovers" not on this list. Reasons being;
No actual literary sources behind them
Said literary sources are dubious at best
Not enough information is given about the nature of their relationship to make an accurate take
So if somebody isn't on this list, it's because of one of those three reasons. Although there is still a chance I missed somebody! :)
Also, no RRverse lovers include in this list. Sorry my fellow ToA fans.
*I am currently investigating the legitimacy of 2 more potential lovers. As soon as I have reliable sources, I will get them on here ASAP. Their inclusion, however, will not change the overall conclusion. 👍
(Edited 01/15/25 - ALL SECTIONS SOURCED)
Let's begin! :D
Immortal Lovers
Calliope: muse of epic poetry. Mother of Hymenaios and Ialemus (Pindar's 3rd Threnos) by Apollo.
Clio: muse of history
Erato: muse of love poetry
Euterpe: muse of music
Polyhymnia: muse of hymns/sacred poetry
Melpomene: muse of tragedy
Thalia: muse of comedy. Mother of the Corybantes (The Bibliotheca by Pseudo-Apollodorus) by Apollo.
Terpsichore: muse of dance
Urania: muse of astronomy
Boreas: the North Wind. The Boreads called Apollo "beloved of our sire" in Apollonius of Rhodes's Argonautica.
Rhetia: alternate mother of the Corybantes by Apollo. (Strabo's Geography 10.3.21)
11 lovers total here.
10 Female, 1 Male
Immortal & Rejected
Hestia: goddess of the Hearth (Hymn to Aphrodite)
1 Interest. Female.
Lovers Who Lived:
Branchus: mortal shepherd, gifted prophecy (Conon's Narrations 33 & Callimachus's Iambus)
Rhoeo: mortal princess, eventually married an apprentice of Apollo (Diodorus Siculus's Bibliotheca historica 5.62 and Tzetzes on Lycophron 570)
Ourea: demigod daughter of Poseidon, dated Apollo during his punishment with Laomedon; had a son named Ileus, after the city of Troy (Hesiod's Catalogues of Women Fragment 83)
Evadne: nymph daughter of Poseidon, Apollo sent Eileithyia & (in some texts) the Fates to aid in their son's birth (Pindar's Olympian Ode 6)
Thero: great-granddaughter of Heracles, described as "beautiful as moonbeams" (Pausanias's Description of Greece 9)
Cyrene: mortal princess-turned-nymph queen, kick-ass lion wrangler, and mother of two of Apollo's sons - Aristaeus (a god) and Idmon (powerful seer) (Pindar's Pythian Ode 9.6 ff. and Nonnus's Dionysiaca and Callimachus's Hymn to Apollo 85)
Admetus: mortal king, took great care of Apollo during his second punishment, Apollo wingmanned him for Alcestis's hand - basically Apollo doted on him <3 (Callimachus's Hymn II to Apollo and Apollodorus's Bibliotheca 1.9.15 and Hyginus's Fabulae 50–51, and also written about by Ovid and Servius)
Hecuba: queen of Troy, together they had Troilus.
It was foretold that if Troilus lived to adulthood, Troy wouldn't fall - unfortunately, Achilles murdered Troilus in Apollo's temple. When the Achaeans burned Troy down, Apollo rescued Hecuba and brought her to safety in Lycia. (Stesichorus's Fr.108)
Hyrie/Thyrie: mortal. mothered a son by Apollo. Their son, Cycnus, attempted to kill himself after some shenanigans and his mother attempted the same. Apollo turned them into swans to save their lives. (Antoninus Liberalis's Metamorphoses 12 and Ovid's Metamorphoses 7.350)
Dryope: mortal. had a son named Amphissus with Apollo, who was a snake at the time. Later turned into a lotus flower, but it had nothing to do with Apollo so she's still on this list. (noncon; written by Ovid in Metamorphoses 8 CE/AD and later by Antoninus Liberalis in his own Metamorphoses sometime between 100-300 CE/AD)
Creusa: mortal queen. had a son named Ion with Apollo (Euripides's Ion). Please check out @my-name-is-apollo's post for more details because they make some good points about what's considered "rape" in Ancient Greece. I expand on this further at the end of the post.
Melia: Oceanid nymph. Had a son w/h Apollo named Tenerus. (Pausanias's Descriptions of Greece 9.10.5–6)
Melia was said to be kidnapped, and her brother found her with Apollo. He set fire to Apollo's temple in an effort to get her back, but was killed. Melia and Apollo had two kids - but here's the interesting part. Melia was highly worshiped in Thebes, where her brother found her. She was an incredibly important figure in Thebes, especially when connected with Apollo. She and Apollo were essentially the parents of Thebes.
As I read over their story, it sounded like (to me, at least. it's okay if you think otherwise!) that Melia just absconded/eloped with Apollo.
Was kidnapping an equivalent to assault back then? Perhaps. But it's still debated on whenever or not that's true. However, one thing I've noticed reading up on these myths is that when Apollo does do something unsavory, the text says so.
It never says anything about Apollo doing anything to Melia. Her father and brother believe she was kidnapped, but, like mentioned previously, it seems far much more likely that she just ran off with her boyfriend or something.
But that's just my interpretation.
Moving on! :)
Iapis: a favorite lover. Apollo wanted to teach him prophecy, the lyre, ect. but Iapis just wanted to heal :) so Apollo taught him healing :) (Smith 1873, s.v. Iapis)
Aethusa: daughter of Poseidon & the Pleiad Alcyone. Mother of Linus and Eleuther. She is the great-great grandmother of Orpheus. (Apollodorus's Bibliotheca 3.10.1 and Pausanias's Descriptions of Greece 9.20.2 and Suida, s.v. Homer's Of the Origin of Homer and Hesiod and their Contest, Fragment 1.314)
Acacallis: daughter of King Minos. there's a lot of variation on whether or not she had kids with Hermes or Apollo. Some say she had a kid with each. (Stephanus of Byzantium, s.v. Kydōnia (Κυδωνία and Scholia on Apollonius Rhodius, 4.1492)
Chrysothemis: nymph queen who won the oldest contest of the Pythian Games - the singing of a hymn to Apollo. She had three daughters, and one of them is said to be Apollo's. (Pausanias's Descriptions of Greece 10.7.2 and Hyginus's De Astronomica 2.25)
Corycia: naiad. had a son with Apollo. the Corycian Cave north of Delphi is named after her (Hyginus's Fabulae 161)
Leuconoe (also Choine or Philonis): daughter of Eosphorus, god of the planet Venus, and mother of the bard Philammon. (Hyginus's Fabulae 161) She was killed by Diana for her hubris.
Melaena (also Thyia or Kelaino): mother of Delphos, member of prophetic Thriae of Delphi. Priestess of Dionysus. (Herodotus's Histories 7.178.1)
Othreis: mothered Phager by Apollo, and later Meliteus by Zeus. (Antoninus Liberalis's Metamorphoses 13)
Stilbe: mother of Lapithus and Aineus by Apollo. (Diodorus Siculus's Library of History 4.69.1 and Scholia on Apollonius Rhodius, 1.40 and Scholia on Apollonius Rhodius, 1.948)
Syllis (possible same as Hyllis, granddaughter of Heracles): mothered Zeuxippus by Apollo. (Pausanias's Descriptions of Greece 2.6.7)
Amphissa: Apollo seduced her in the form of a shepherd. They had a son named Agreus. (Ovid's Metamorphoses 6.103 and Hyginus's Fabulae 161)
(hey, has anybody else noticed that 'Apollo disguising himself' seems to only be a thing in Roman literature?)
Areia (or Deione): had a son named Miletus. Hid him in some smilax. Her father found him and named him. (Apollodorus's Bibliotheca 3.1.2)
Arsinoe: she and Apollo had a daughter named Eriopis. (Hesiod's Ehoiai 63 and Scholia ad Pindar's Pythian Ode 3.14)
Queen of Orkhomenos (no name is given): Mother of Trophonius (Pausanias's Descriptions of Greece 9.37.5)
(my fellow ToA fans will recognize that name haha).
Hypermnestra: Either Apollo or her husband fathered her son Amphiaraus. (Hyginus's Fabulae 70)
(sidenote: @literallyjusttoa suggested that Apollo was dating both Hypermnestra and Oikles, and I, personally, like that headcannon)
Manto: Daughter of Tiresias. Apollo made her a priestess of Delphi. They had a son named Mopsus. When Apollo sent her to found an oracle elsewhere, he told her to marry the first man she saw outside of Delphi. That man turned out to be Rhacius, who brought her to Claros, where she founded the oracle of Apollo Clarios. (Apollodorus's Bibliotheca E6. 3)
Later, another man named Lampus attempted to assault her, but was killed by Apollo. She is also said to be a priestess who warned Niobe not to insult Leto, and to ask for forgiveness. Niobe did not. (Statius's Thebaid 7 and Ovid's Metamorphoses 6)
(Dante's Inferno places her in the eighth circle of hell, and let me just say- what the FUCK Dante! What did Manto ever do to you, huh??!! Don't do my girl dirty!!)
Parthenope: granddaughter of a river god. Mothered Lycomedes by Apollo (Pausanius's Descriptions of Greece 4.1)
Phthia: prophetess. called "beloved of Apollo". Mother three kings by him; Dorus, Laodocus, & Polypoetes (Apollodorus's Bibliotheca 1.7.6)
Procleia: Mother of Tenes, son of Apollo, who was killed by Achilles before the Trojan War. Daughter of King Laomedon, king of Troy. (Apollodorus's Epitome 3. 26)
Helenus: prince of Troy. Received from Apollo an ivory bow which he used to wound Achilles in the hand. (Photius's 'Bibliotheca excerpts')
Hippolytus of Sicyon: called "beloved of Apollo" in Plutarch's Life of Numa. I don't think this guy is the same as Hippolytus, son of Zeuxippus (son of Apollo), king of Sicyon Pausanias talks about in his Description of Greece. That would be a little weird taking the whole family tree into account - though it's never stopped other gods before. *shrug*
Psamathe: nereid, said to be the personification of the sand of the sea-shore. (Conon's Narrationes 19)
She and Apollo were lovers, but never had any kids. When another man assaulted her, she had a son and abandoned him.
(He was found by some shepherds dw - wait, he was then torn apart by dogs. Nevermind.)
Back to her, her father ordered for her to be executed and Apollo avenged her death by sending a plague onto Argos and refused to stop it until Psamathe and Phocus/Linus (her son) were properly given honors.
(I really like how even though Linus isn't Apollo's kid, and that Psamathe wanted nothing to do with the kid, Apollo still considered him worth avenging too <3 )
Okay, in a previous incarnation of this post, I said there was a version where she is raped by Apollo...however, I can't find any sources to back it up😅 Even her wiki page doesn't mention rape, and Theoi's excerpt of Paunasias's Descriptions of Greece about her doesn't either.
So where did I hear about this supposed version? (Don't shoot)
Youtube. A youtube video about Apollo. Yeah...
Lesson, kids! Don't trust youtube videos on mythology! Yes, even if they dedicated lots of time to it! They can still get things wrong! In fact, don't even take my word for it! Do your own research <3
Hymenaeus: No, not his kid. This is a different Hymenaeus haha! This Hymenaeus is the son of Magnes, and comes from Megalai Ehoiai fr. 16, commonly attributed to Hesiod, and Antonius Liberalis's Metamorphosis. Legend states that while Apollo was preoccupied with Hymenaeus, baby Hermes stole his cows ;)
Euboia: Daughter of Macareus. Bore a son named Agreus. (Hyginus's Fabulae 161)
Alright. 36 lovers here.
6 Male. 30 Female.
35 are 100% consensual. Creusa is questionable, depending on who's translating/which tradition you go with.
Lovers Who Died:
Hyacinthus*: mortal prince. we all know this one, right? Right? one and only true love turned into flower (okay that's my bias speaking but AM I WRONG?) (Plutarch's Life of Numa, 4.5; Philostratus the younger's Imagines; Pseudo-Apollodorus's Bibliotheca 1.3.3; Ovid's Metamorphoses 10.162–219; Bion's Poems 11; and various pieces of art)
Cyparissus: mortal. his DEER DIED and he asked Apollo to let him MOURN FOREVER so he was turned into a cypress tree (Ovid's Metamorphoses X 106ff)
Coronis: mortal princess. cheated on Apollo w/h Ischys, who in Fabulae was killed by Zeus. mother of Asclepius. killed by Artemis. (Pindar's Pythian Odes 3.5; Pausanias's Descriptions of Greece 2.26.6; Hyginus's Fabulae 202; Ovid's Metamorphoses 2.536 and 2.596; Hyginus's De Astronomica 2.40; Isyllus's Hymn to Asclepius 128.37 ff.)
There is another version of Asclepius's birth given by Pausanias in Descriptions of Greece 2.26.1-7, where Coronis exposes him on a mountain and Apollo takes him in.
Adonis: yes, THAT Adonis. he's in this category because. well. he died. rip (Ptolemy Hephaestion's New History Book 5)
Phorbas: Okay so Apollo's lover Phorbas and another Phorbas sometimes get mashed together so this is what I was able to gather.
Plutarch's Life of Numa 4.5 and Hyginus's De Astronomia 2.14.5 cites Phorbas as Apollo's lover. The other Phorbas is said to be a rival to Apollo in the Homeric Hymn to Apollo. Personally, I separate the two because it makes more sense with Phorbas the lover's overall story.
Here it is: The island of Rhodes fell victim to a plague of dragons or serpents, and the oracle said to summon Phorbas for help. He defeated the infestation, and after he died, Apollo asked Zeus to place him in the stars, and so Phorbas became the constellation Serpentarius, also known more widely as Ophiuchus (a man holding a serpent).
FORGET ORION AND HIS ONE-OFF MENTION OF BEING DIANA'S LOVER HERE IS A CONSTELLATION TRAGIC LOVE STORY!!!!!
(*Hyacinthus was resurrected, as celebrated in the Hyacinthia festival in Sparta. Nonnus's Dionysiaca 19.102 and Pausanias's Descriptions of Greece 3.19.4 supports this belief as well.)
5 lovers.
4 Male. 1 Female. All consensual.
Sidenote: QUIT BURYING THE GAYS GREECE!!!!
Love-Interests Who Rejected & Died:
Daphne: do i nEED to say anything? Nymph. turned into tree to escape.
Daphne and Apollo actually go back a bit. Their story was used to explain why the laurel was so sacred to Apollo. It's in Delphi, Branchus planted laurel trees around the temple he built to Apollo, the laurel was even sacred to Apollo's historical forebearer Apulu, an Etruscan god! (I have sources to back this up :3 along with an Essay.)
Apollo & Daphne first originate from Phylarchus, but we do not have any of his work :( It's been lost to history...a moment of silence RIP. He was a contemporary in the 3rd century BC/BCE (first day of 300 BC/BCE and last day of 201 BC/BCE).
He was, however, cited as a source in Parthenius's Erotica Pathemata, written sometime in the 1 century AD/CE (sometime between 66 BC/BCE and the author's death in 14 AD/CE).
Then they show up again in Pausanias's Descriptions of Greece, written between 150 AD/CE and 170 AD/CE.
Hyginus wrote his Fabulae sometime before Ovid's because it's widely criticized to be his earliest work and Ovid wrote his Metamorphoses in 8 AD/CE.
The first two versions are roughly the same, and Ovid's shares similarities with the first in only the ending. Hyginus is basically like Ovid's but without Eros.
So in publication order, it's; Erotica Pathemata, Fabulae, Metamorphoses, then Descrip. of Greece.
In Erotica Pathemata, Daphne is the daughter of Amyclas and is being courted by Leucippus. She is not interested in any sort of romance. Leucippus disguises himself as a girl to get close to her, but his ruse is revealed when Apollo nudges Daphne and her attendants into taking a bath in the river. Leucippus is consequently killed.
Apollo then becomes interested and Daphne runs away, imploring Zeus that "she might be translated away from mortal sight", and is transformed into the laurel tree.
In Fabulae, Daphne's story is a bit more familiar. She's the daughter of Peneus, the river god, and Gaea is the one who transforms her into a laurel tree.
In Metamorphoses, Eros is added to the story and is the reason why Apollo is so enamored and Daphne is so repulsed.
(I would just like to say that in this version, it was 100% nonconsensual for both of them! And I don't mean with rape- Apollo never touches Daphne in any of these version. What I mean here is that Eros maliciously makes Apollo chase down a woman and makes sure Daphne would be repulsed by him. That is noncon behavior there on both sides.)
In Descriptions of Greece 10.7.8, Daphne is the daughter of Ladon and her and Apollo are only connected by way of why the laurel crown is the victory prize of the Pythian Games. However, in Descriptions of Greece 8.20.2-8.20.4, Daphne and Leucippus make an appearance here too, but Apollo is not the reason why they stop to take a swim and his ruse is revealed, resulting in his death.
Castalia: Nymph. turned into spring to escape.
First things first, Castalia was used to explain the existence of the Castalian Spring in Delphi. However, in the Homeric Hymn to Apollo, the spring is already there when Apollo was born. So there's that to consider first.
Anyway, to escape Apollo's advances, Castalia transforms herself into a spring. (Lactantius Placidus's On Statius's Thebaid 1.698. This was written between Lactantius's lifespan of c. 350 – c. 400 AD/CE, placing it firmly in Roman times.)
2 Interests.
2 Female.
Love-Interests Who Rejected & Cursed
Cassandra: mortal princess. Received the gift of prophecy from Apollo. Due to a broken oath, she was then cursed. (Aeschylus's Agamemnon)
It is only in Roman-era tellings where Cassandra is cursed for not sleeping with Apollo, and there was no oath made (Hyginus & Pseudo-Apollodorus). In Agamemnon, it was done so because of the broken oath- not the refusing to sleep with Apollo thing.
The version where she gains prophetic abilities by way of a snake licking her ears is not part of Greco-Roman literature, but rather by an American poet.
Nevertheless, even after the curse Cassandra still loved Apollo, and called him "god most dear to me" in Eurpides's play The Trojan Women.
1 Interests.
1 Female.
Love-Interests Who Rejected & Lived
Sinope: mortal. there are two different version of her myth.
In Diodorus Siculus's Library of History 4.72.2 and Corinna's Frag. 654, Apollo "seizes" her and they have a son named Syrus.
In Apollonius's Argonautica  2.946-951 and Valerius Flaccus's Argonautica 5.109, it is Zeus who abducts her, but she gets him to promise her anything and requests to remain a virgin. He obliges. Later, Apollo and the river Halys both try to charm her, but fall for the same trick.
Library of History was written between 60-30 BC/BCE, Apollonius's Argonautica between 300 BC/BCE and 201 BC/BCE, and Valerius Flaccus's Argonautica between 70-96 AD/CE, making Apollonius's version the oldest and Valerius Flaccus's the youngest.
Marpessa: mortal princess, granddaughter of Ares. Idas, son of Poseidon, kidnapped her and Apollo caught up to them. Zeus had Marpessa chose between them, and she chose Idas, reasoning that she would eventually grow old and Apollo would tire of her. (Homer's The Iliad, 9.557 and Apollodorus's Bibliotheca 1.7.8–9)
Bolina: mortal. Apollo approached her and she flung herself off a cliff. He turned her into a nymph to save her life. (Pausanias's Description of Greece 7.23.4)
Ocroe/Okyrrhoe: nymph and daughter of a river god. asked a boatman to take her home after Apollo approached her. Apollo ended up turning the boat to stone and the seafarer into a fish. (Athenaeus's The Deipnosophists 7.283 E [citing The Founding of Naucratis by Apollonius Rhodius]. The Deipnosophists was written in the early 3rd century AD, between 201 AD and 300 AD)
Sibyl of Cumae: mortal seer. promised to date Apollo if she was given longevity as long as the amount of sand in her hand. he did, but she refused him. (Ovid's Metamorphoses 14)
5 Interests. All female.
Okyrrhoe's story is the only one with any iffy stuff, although, when something iffy does occur, the text usually says so outright.
Rejected by Apollo:
Clytie*: Oceanid nymph. turned into a heliotrope to gaze at the sun forever after the rejection.
1 Advance. Female.
(*Clytie's story was originally about her affection for Helios. [Ovid's Metamorphoses 4.192–270; Ovid used Greek sources about the etymology of the names involved, meaning Clytie and Helios go back to Greek times] As Apollo got superimposed over Helios's myths, people have assumed it is he who is the sun god in her myth and not Helios.)
In Conclusion...
62 people total, and 35 of them have Roman-Era roots with (as far as I know!! Don't take my word as gospel truth!!) no relation to Greece except by way of shared mythology.
Here's the list:
Rhoeo
Thero
Hyrie/Thyrie
Dryope
Melia
Aethusa
Acacallis
Chrysothemis
Corycia
Choine
Thyia
Othreis
Stilbe
Syllis
Amphissa
Areia
Queen of Orkhomenos
Hypermnestra
Manto
Parthenope
Phthia
Procleia
Helenus
Hippolytus of Sicyon
Psamathe
Cyparissus
Adonis
Phorbas
Castalia
Sinope
Bolina
Ocroe/Okyrrhoe
Sibyl of Cumae
Rhetia
Euboia
Meaning, 56%- and really, it's more like 57%, because Clytie is not Apollo's lover at all- of the lovers listed on this post are not entirely Greek in origin (AS FAR AS I KNOW-)! That does not mean ofc that you have to ignore them. I, for one, really like the story of Rhoeo, and Manto, and Psamethe- I find their myths sweet (Rhoeo & Manto) and bittersweet (Psamethe).
Let's get to the calculations now, yeah?
62 people total (Includes Clytie)
50 Women (81%). 12 Men (19%).
18% were Immortal (Including Lovers & Rejected)
68% Lived (Including Lovers & Cursed & Rejected)
14% Died (Including Lovers & Rejected)
1% were Cursed
2% were Rejected by him
61 people total (Not Including Clytie)
49 Women (80%). 12 Men (20%).
18% were Immortal
69% Lived (Lovers & Cursed & Rejected)
12% Died (Lovers & Rejected)
in that 12%, one was apotheosized - Hyacinthus.
Meaning 10% died permanently, while 2% were resurrected.
2% were Cursed
0% were Rejected by him
Additionally, I left off three male lovers and two female lovers - Atymnius, Leucates, Cinyras, Hecate, & Acantha.
Atymnius has no references to being Apollo's lover, only to Zeus's son Sarpedon. (Wikipedia why do you even have him listed? You need sources smh)
Leucates is another male "lover" left off the rack - apparently he jumped off a cliff to avoid Apollo, but I couldn't find any mythological text to account for it- and no, OSP's wiki page is not a reliable source. There is a cliff named similarly to him where Aphrodite went (by Apollo's advice) to rid herself of her longing for Adonis after his death. Also Zeus uses it to rid himself of his love for Hera before he...well, commits adultery again. 🤷
Cinyras was a priest of Aphrodite on the island of Cyprus. He was also the island's king. Pindar calls him "beloved of Apollo" in his Pythian Ode. However, looking further into Cinyras's life throws a bit of a wrench into it. He's also cited to be a challenger to Apollo's skill, and either Apollo or Mars (Ares) kills him for his hubris.
(honestly, I kinda like the idea that Mars went into Big Brother Mode)
I did consider leaving him on the list, since technically you could argue it was a romance-gone-bad, but among every other source Cinyras is mentioned in, Pindar's the only one who puts a romantic label on him and Apollo.
Plus, he’s been described as a son of Apollo too, and I personally like that more lol
Hecate, the goddess of magic and crossroads, is said to be the mother of Scylla (like, the sea-monster) by Apollo, but Scylla's parentage is one of those "no specific parents" ones, so I left her off the list.
Acantha has absolutely no classical references. There's a plant like her name, but she's made-up, so she doesn't count. *stink-eyes the guy who invented her and claimed his “sources” were reliable when they really aren’t*
(Of course, I could be wrong about any of these. Again, I'm not an expert.)
With all this in mind, this means Apollo's love life actually isn't as tragic as media portrays it, and he isn't as bad as Zeus or Poseidon in the nonconsensual area.
Does he still have those kinds of myths? Yes, with Dryope and Creusa; though, we can discount Creusa because;
1) Depends on who's translating it; and
2) Ion is given different parentage in the Bibliotheca, which yes, came much after Ion, however Xuthus was traditionally considered to be Ion's father rather than Apollo. This means there was probably a different oral tradition on Ion's parentage that just wasn't written down as early as Euripides's was- in fact, it may even just be an invention of Euripides's.
(and honestly Apollo's characterization in Ion just doesn't quite match up with the rest of his appearances in the wider myths (in my opinion, at least))
So that leaves us with just Dryope, who comes from Ovid, a Roman poet, and Antoninus Liberalis, a late Greek one.
Now I'm not saying we should throw her out because of Ovid's whole "wrote the gods even more terribly to criticize Augustus" thing, but it is something to keep in mind. Political mechanics have been used to change myths before, and this is certainly one example of it.
Additionally, I have seen many people discard Dionysus's rapes in the Dionysiaca because of how late it was written, so this one can be given similar treatment if one choses too because of just how late Ovid and Antoninus Liberalis's work was.
You can, in fact, pick and chose if you wish, especially if it'll increase your enjoyment of literature. That's certainly what I do :)
So overall, I'd say Apollo has a rather clean relationship past. He's doing pretty damn good.
Also, I think we should all take note that even if Apollo had noncon myths, that doesn't reflect on the actual god. The Ancient Greeks did not see the myths as "canon" to their gods- in fact, some were not happy with the myths showing the gods in such a light.
That's something else to keep in mind. The gods of the myths are not the gods of Greece, and are more like parables or fables for the Ancient Greeks I'd say. Lessons on morality and such, and of course, warnings against hubris and the like.
This was quite the journey, and I really hope you all enjoyed reading and learning with me! This really makes me wonder- if Apollo's love life is this good, I wonder how misinformed we are on everyone else's? I have no plans on doing Zeus or Poseidon or anyone else (not for a LONG time lol, this took a lot of effort and research!), but if anyone has any idea, or gets inspired to do something like this for any other god, please tag me!! I'd love to see it! :D
And since this was on a previous reblog, here be a meme from a while ago:

The text over her says "Me giving a detailed diatribe about Apollo's love life and how modern media has done him and his lovers dirty". On the right is the girl's mother, wrapped up to her chin in a blanket, with a look on her face that screams "absolutely done with this shit". The Mother is labeled "My family". /End ID]

Kreel torrn, or "leapers," ambush two well-armed humans as their triphant clears a path through a Gamma World jungle (Roger Raupp art, I believe, for "Mutant Manual II," Dragon magazine 108, April 1986). After TSR bought out SPI, Ares magazine was soon discontinued but its name was used for a section in the back of Dragon with sci-fi and superhero RPG content.

Max's comments
Pairing: Max Verstappen x PewDiePie!sibling Summary: What if Felix had a genius brother who works as a RedBull's engineer and is also secretly dating Max part 10 of A Calm to my Storm Masterlist
As the buzz around Sam Kjellberg continued to rise online, Max Verstappen found himself at the centre of it all. His friends and fans had caught wind of the internet’s obsession with Sam, and Max couldn’t resist the urge to play along.
Video #1: Max at a Press Conference
During a press conference following a recent race, a journalist took the opportunity to bring up the fanfare surrounding Sam.
Journalist: "Max, fans have been commenting on your engineer Sam Kjellberg, saying he’s their new crush. How do you feel about that?"
Max chuckled, leaning back in his chair, a smirk spreading across his face. "Well, I can't blame them. Sam’s a smart guy. He’s got a great mind for engineering and… yeah, I guess he’s pretty fit too." The room filled with laughter, and he raised an eyebrow, leaning into the joke. “I mean, those arms do get a lot of attention, don’t they?”
The journalists chuckled, and Max leaned closer to the microphone, his eyes twinkling with mischief. “But seriously, Sam is one of my best friends. We spend a lot of time together discussing race strategies and, you know, fixing my mistakes.” He winked, eliciting more laughter from the room.
---
Video #2: Max's Twitter
Later that week, Max took to his social media, posting a photo of himself in the garage, casually posing with his team. He added a cheeky caption: “Can’t do it without my team… especially not without Sam's biceps helping me out. 💪😉”
The comments section exploded.
Fan 103: “Max is so supportive of Sam’s newfound fame! 😂”
Fan 104: “Is this confirmation that Sam is hot? Because I need more evidence!”
Max grinned, reading through the comments. He added another tweet, this time of him working on the car, saying, “The real MVPs are the engineers—especially the hot ones.” He punctuated it with a wink emoji.
---
Video #3: Max on a Talk Show
On a popular talk show, the host couldn’t resist bringing up the topic as well.
Host: "So, Max, what’s it like having the internet thirsting over your engineer?"
Max laughed, shaking his head. “It’s honestly hilarious. I mean, Sam is just doing his job, but I can’t say I’m surprised people are noticing him. He’s got that ‘I could fix your car and still look good’ vibe going on.”
The audience erupted in laughter, and the host continued, “And what about the rumours of Sam being related to PewDiePie? Is that true?”
Max laughed again, leaning forward. “Oh yeah, Sam is Felix's brother. Great guy. But I’ve heard more stories about him than I dare to repeat!” The audience roared, and Max added with a mischievous grin, “Honestly, I think Felix should be the one watching out. He’d have so much to worry about if I started telling what Sam has told me of when they were kids!”
---
Reddit Reactions
The Reddit threads lit up again as fans dissected Max’s comments, eagerly sharing clips and highlighting his playful demeanour.
---
User 105: “Max is literally the best best friend ever. The way he talks about Sam is too funny! 😂”
User 106: “Did he just call Felix out? I’m cackling. Max really said Sam is the hot one!”
User 107: “I love how nonchalantly he drops that Sam is attractive and that he’s his engineer. Like, can he be any more supportive?”
User 108: “I’m convinced they’re dating, and nobody knows. The vibes are too strong!”
---
Max and Sam’s Private Conversation
Meanwhile, Max and Sam enjoyed their moments together, sometimes discussing the latest clips of Max’s press appearances. One evening, after a race, they lounged on the couch in Max’s apartment, both wrapped in a cosy blanket, laughter filling the air.
Sam: “Did you really say that about my biceps? I mean, come on, man. The internet is going to take that and run with it.”
Max chuckled, pulling Sam closer. “What can I say? I’m just saying what everyone else is thinking. You’ve got the arms of a greek god, and it’s just a bonus that you’re brilliant at your job.”
Sam rolled his eyes playfully, trying to hide the smile creeping onto his face. “And nobody knows we’re dating? Still? You’re just out here fueling the fire.”
Max grinned, leaning in to kiss Sam softly. “Let them think whatever they want. It’s fun to watch. And hey, it’s not like anyone suspects that the engineer and the driver are more than just friends, right?”
As they cuddled under the blanket, the warmth between them felt electric. Little did the world know that behind the scenes, their relationship was blossoming into something beautiful, far beyond the banter of the internet.
---
Max continued to tease Sam through interviews and social media, knowing that even though the rumours kept flying, they could still enjoy their hidden relationship without the prying eyes of the public. Fans were left in a frenzy, eager for more, completely oblivious to the truth behind the scenes.

Fish of the Day
Happy Thursday, everyone! Today's fish of the day is the Australian lungfish!
Tumblr media
The Australian lungfish, or barramunda, known by scientific name Neoceratodus forsteri is one of the 6 surviving lungfishes of the modern world. The other 5 lungfishes are scattered to other sections of the world, one in South America, and the other 4 all living in Africa. As the name implies, this lungfish is endemic to Australia living in South Eastern Queensland, or for those who don't know the general areas of Australia, the upper right corner of the country. Living exclusively in slow moving streams, still waters, and various waterside banks living entirely in freshwater systems. This fish is primarily nocturnal, and almost entirely carnivorous. Its diet consists of: frogs, larvae, bugs, plant material, earthworms, fishes, small invertebrates, and anything else it can catch.  They are primarily bottom dwellers, and prey is caught directly in the mouth and then crushed multiple times, being positioned correctly by a bone called a hydroid apparatus. Australian lungfish have the most primitive of surviving lungfish feeding behaviors.
Tumblr media
Australian lungfish are best known for their ability to survive dry seasons. However, unlike African lungfish, which can survive fully in droughts by submerging themselves into  This is done by submerging the body in the mud, and rising to the surface to swallow oxygen into a single dorsal lung. This lung is only supplementary, and the fish prefer to breathe through their 5 gills. Of the six lungfish, the Australian lungfish is the only one to not have two lungs, but rather a fold down the center of the single lung acting as a wall, which blood capillaries run through, allowing gas exchange. Unlike it's African counterparts, the Australian lungfish can not survive total water depletion, (other lungfish survive this by creating a layer of mucus around itself and living there for several years until water returns). Australian lungfish can survive several days out of the water, but can not do so unless it is in a moist environment, usually mud.
Tumblr media
Fossil records of lungfish tell us that some of their first fossils can be found from 410 Million years ago, being the closest living relative to the tetrapod. The last shared ancestor between the lungfish and tetrapod was 420 Million year ago. Originally, these animals started as marine creatures, but sometime in the carboniferous the species became freshwater exclusive, around the same time that the last common ancestor to all remaining lungfish lived.  Australian lungfish in particular appear to have split off about 380 million years ago, and have remained virtually unchanged from their ancestors for over 100 million years, giving them the title of living fossils!
Tumblr media
Not only have they remained incredibly similar over the years, they have a long lifespan for individuals as well. A captive Australian lungfish named granddad was shown to live to 108 years (+- 6), with the expected lifespan of wild lungfish surviving at least 20-25 years after they reach sexual maturity. In Australian lungfish, similar to other lungfish species in the world, sexual maturity is reached in males after 17 years, and 22 years in females. Australian lungfish have elaborate courting rituals consisting of three distinct phases. The first phase is searching, where the lungfish will breathe loudly, making mating calls with its single lung. The second is called "follow the leader" where males will attempt to entice a female by nudging and rubbing snouts with her, often at the same time as competitors. The last stage is where two lungfish will descend to lay and fertilize eggs, females producing 2 eggs per spawning season. After breeding, the eggs are left to sink in the vegetation, as Australian lungfish do not nest or care for their young. This is unlike all other lungfish species.

Have a wonderful Thursday, everyone!

It's December 4, 2024.
Today, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in United States v. Skrmetti, a challenge to Tennessee's ban on gender-affirming care. The specific question presented is whether Tennessee's ban violates the Equal Protection Clause.
The challenge is to Tenn. Code Ann. § 68-33-103(a)(1). That is, it's a challenge to a bit of Tennessee's Annotated Code. Title 68, Chapter 33, "Prohibited Medical Procedures for Minors."
I don't have anything to say about Tennessee's ban on gender-affirming care. Nor do I have anything to say about how the Court will treat the case. Not yet, anyways.
But I have something to say about the Code.
I.
Tennessee's laws are compiled by its code commission.
Under state law, the commission is a five-member body, consisting of the state's chief justice, attorney general, and counsel for the legislature, along with another two members appointed by the chief justice. Tenn. Code Ann. § 1-1-101(a).
The code commission supervises the official publication of the state's statutes, codes and session laws. § 1-1-105(a). The commission is empowered to commission to contract with publishers to that end, § 1-1-106(a), and obliged to inspect and certify their work. § 1-1-110(a).
When its work finished, the commission puts its certificate of approval in each volume and pocket supplement. § 1-1-110(c). But their first certificate, the one they leave with the secretary of state, § 1-1-110(b), is what gives the code the force of law. § 1-1-111(a).
Beyond that, the commission's work is ministerial. It cuts and pastes. "[T]he commission shall not alter the sense, meaning or effect of any act of the general assembly, but shall copy the exact language of the text of the statutes, codes and session laws." § 1-1-108.
The commission may "rearrange, regroup and renumber" the laws; change their "section headings"; "correct manifest misspelling[s] and typographical errors"; and "omit enacting clauses, repealing clauses, severability clauses, conditional clauses, preambles, [and] captions", § 1-1-108—and not much more.
II.
Tennessee leaves the work to Lexis, a private publisher.
Lexis's product, the Tennessee Code Annotated, is not eligible for copyright. Public.Resource.Org v. Matthew Bender & Co., No. M2022-01260-COA-R3-CV, slip op. (Tenn. Ct. App. Nov. 9, 2023). But it is not subject to compulsory disclosure, either.
Under current law, according to the state's intermediate appellate court, the Tennessee Code Annotated in the hands of Lexis is in the hands of a private contractor, not the State.
If Lexis had been the functional equivalent of a government entity, contracted to "perform a governmental or public function," it would be subject to the State's public records law. *8. But it's not.
That's what the state's intermediate appellate court says, at least. But its reasoning is less than persuasive.
III.
Lexis is merely a contractor. The commission specifies the work, and Lexis does the work. The commission may be exacting, but it isn't controlling. *9.
That's the court's argument, at least. But that strikes me as a less than complete account of the commission's duties under State law, which must inform any characterization of its contracts.
Under State law, the commission is "authorized and directed to" control each dimension of the compilation, Tenn. Code Ann. § 1-1-105(a), and must
supervise the execution of plans for the compilation, arrangement, classification, annotation, editing, indexing, printing, binding, publication, sale, distribution and the performance of all other acts necessary for the publication of an official compilation of the statutes, codes and session laws of the state of Tennessee
The commission's contractual powers, set out in the subsequent section, § 1-1-106, are an incident to its primary authority and duty to "formulate and supervise" the compilation. § 1-1-105(a).
The commission's primary authority and duty to prepare the compilation is plain on the face of the law. Under State law, the compilation is the commission's work, down to the copying and pasting, § 1-1-108(a):
In preparing the manuscript of the revised compilation (including pocket supplements and replacement volumes) for publication and distribution, the commission shall not alter the sense, meaning or effect of any act of the general assembly, but shall copy the exact language of the text . . .
This is more than the relationship suggested by the court. It's more than control over the product. It's control over production, the work of "preparing the manuscript."
To the extent that Lexis is doing the work, "preparing the manuscript," and "copy[ing] the exact language of the text," it is performing the commission's functions.
The court says "Lexis is not a stand-in for government." But that's exactly what it is. The commission is a government body. And Lexis is doing the commission's work.
That seems like a governmental function to me.

Version differences between uncensored/censored ENNEAD manhwa
This leads to some confusion among many folks, so I figure a breakdown might be useful to more people. In simple terms, there are two versions of ENNEAD, the boys love manhwa: the uncensored version (19+/18+/Mature, depending on the publisher), and a censored version (15+/16+/Older Teen, depending on the publisher). This is true for a lot of BL comics, to a degree, but ENNEAD has more differences than usual.
This is also primarily to combat the narrative of people trying to sell the censored version of the series as some wholly different beast than the uncensored version. Changes between the versions cover <9% of the whole story. The censored version is, to some degree, slightly softer than the uncensored version (mostly in the sense that there's visually less of it on the page). But it is still dark fantasy, covers the same topics, and deals with the same narratives. Showing less of a scene does not equal not having the scene happen at all.
This will be spoilery for things up through Season 2, Episode 108.
ENNEAD is unique in some ways in that Mojito works around the usual censoring so she doesn't have to have as much cropping and panel cutting or use lightsabers or those weird censor lines that other releases put over dicks. She makes use of specific posing, gestures, and clothing to indicate sensuality without showing bits constantly. The idea is, if she has to remake the scene for the censored version, she has to do as little work as possible while avoiding having the work be butchered to meet the censor requirements when it's redone for the censored version, and so the censored version can be as close to the uncensored version as possible. There's still some cropping, but it's not as bad as it might be. Mostly, changes are just having characters be fully clothed or do different things together.
ENNEAD does not use lightsabers or censor bars (with the caveat that, for some reason, the English translation on Tappytoon used lightsabers solely for the uncensored release of S2E108; lightsabers are not present on the original Korean version). Mojito either redraws or replaces the panels, crops, adds clothing, and/or rewrites for the censored release.
ENNEAD is a serial webcomic, and is broken up into episodes (as of writing, 186 episodes in the uncensored version, as that's one episode longer). This is a list of episodes with version differences:
Season 1: Episodes 28-32, 42-44, 74-75 (75 doesn't exist in the censored release)
Season 2: Episodes 19, 45-47, 71, 107, 108
Not all episodes are completely different throughout the episode. Some only have a few tweaks. Season 1, Episode 28, for example, just removes some bloodstains. It doesn't otherwise change any of the panels. And even episodes with complete panel redraws aren't redrawn throughout the whole episode for the most part. That's 16/186 episodes, making up <9% of the whole story that are changed. The percentage is even smaller than that because most episodes with changes only change a few panels. The most extensive changes are in S1E30-32, 42-43, 74-75, and S2E45-47, 71, 107, and 108.
A more detailed breakdown of the changes made for the censored release in the digital and physical English releases:
S1E28/Volume 3, Chapter 7: Bloodstains removed [This was not kept for the English physical release for some reason; the bloodstains are in both releases, which is possibly an error, or just different country requirements]
S1E29-31/Volume 3, Chapter 8: Panel redraws and rewrites to soften the nsfw
S1E32/Volume 3, Chapter 8: Panel redraws and rewrites to soften the nsfw, added Seth POV focusing on his psyche
S1E42/Volume 4, Chapter 11: Panel redraws and rewrites to soften the nsfw
S1E43/Volume 4, Chapter 11: Extended Isis POV section with new panels and writing, shrunken Osiseth section. This is possibly the most extensively changed episode, as the uncensored version is mostly Osiseth, while the censored version is mostly Isis' POV.
S1E44/Volume 4, Chapter 11: Redrawn panels, mostly to remove more of the Osiseth, rewriting
S1E74/Volume 6 (presumed): There is an end AU story for each version of the season. The uncensored version contains an early draft of the manhwa where the new King Horus takes Seth as his prisoner. It is two episodes long. The censored version contains a story where Seth's punishment for losing the trial is to become tiny and held as Horus' captive. It's one episode long.
No version of season 2 has gone to print in any language as of yet. However, current physical volumes average 13 episodes a volume.
S2E19: Panel redraws and rewrites to soften the nsfw
S2E45: Panel redraws and rewrites to soften the nsfw
S2E46: Panel redraws and rewrites, including more information on Seth's attempted rescue of the boy
S2E47: Panel redraws and rewrites to soften the nsfw
S2E71: Panel redraws and rewrites to soften the nsfw
S2E107-8: Panel redraws and rewrites to soften the nsfw
The sex scenes are all still in there, they're just shorter (and generally they're sort of alternate sex scenes). The non-con is also still there. It's just not as heavily emphasized.
For folks looking to buy the physical English release and wondering which version to get as Seven Seas offers both, volumes 1, 2, and 5 should have no differences. Volumes 3, 4, and possibly 6 should have differences. 3 and 4 definitely do, but we don't know what's in volume 6, yet. The listing on storefronts shows the paperback and hardcovers have different page counts, which might be different to include the AUs.
If you'd like to know where to read it, you can read both the uncensored and censored versions in English on Tappytoon on both the browser and app versions of the site. More information on the manhwa here.
