New Releases - Week of October 15, 2024
Like last week, there are quite a few new books for us to peruse for release day. What catches your attention?
Under the Heron’s Light by Randi Pink Feiwel & Friends
Inspired by stories about the real-world Great Dismal Swamp, this dual POV Young Adult fantasy by Randi Pink explores alternate history, a family’s supernatural connections to the swamp, and the strength that comes in knowing your roots.
“Four-thousand-six-hundred-forty-two steps in,” Grannylou interrupted. “You remember that now, Baby. Four-thousand-six-hundred-forty-two steps to paradise.”On a damp night in 1722, Babylou Mac and her three siblings witness the murder of their mother at the hands of the preacher’s son—so Babylou kills him in retaliation. With plantation dogs now on their heels, the four siblings breach the treacherous confines of the Great Dismal Swamp. Deeper and deeper into Dismal they delve, amid the biting moccasins and pitch-black waters, eventually creating a refuge within the swamp’s natural—and supernatural—protection.Centuries later, college student Atlas comes home for the annual Bornday cookout and hog a celebration of the fact that she and her three cousins were all born on the same day almost nineteen years ago and share a birthday with their Grannylou. But this Bornday, Grannylou’s usual riddles and folktales about a marvelous paradise deep in the Great Dismal Swamp start to take on a tangible quality. Change coming. When Dismal calls, sucking Grannylou in, it’s up to Atlas and her cousins to uncover the history that the black waters hold. Centuries of family tension, with roots all over Virginia and North Carolina, are about to be dug up. Because Babylou and Grannylou are one and the same, and the power she helped cultivate—steeped in Black resistance, familial love, and the otherworldly mysteries of the Great Dismal Swamp—is bubbling back up. But so is a bitterness that runs deep as the swamp’s waters. And some are ready to take what they feel they’re owed.
Inferno’s Heir by Tiffany Wang Bindery Books
Fearing for her life, an outcast princess joins the rebellion against her own kingdom and family. . . but when playing with fire, someone always gets burned.
Teia Carthan abandoned her morals long ago, and now there’s nothing she won’t do to stay alive. So far she has survived her parents’ deaths, the ire of the Council, and innumerable attempts on her life, orchestrated by Jura, her half brother and soon-to-be king of Erisia. Teia’s rare control over two elements marks her as both an outsider and a formidable opponent—but once Jura is crowned king, there will be no way to survive him. Not for Teia, not for anyone.
When Jura moves to crush the rebellion that seeks to overthrow the monarchy, Teia sees one last opportunity to ensure her own safety. She can infiltrate the rebels, locate their base . . . and betray them to Jura, trading their lives for her own.
Yet when Teia meets the rebels, she gets far more than she bargained for. And when she gains not only their trust but their friendship, she begins to have doubts. Perhaps the rebels are right. Perhaps the Golden Palace should be torn down and the monarchy destroyed.
But then again—what if there is another possibility? What if Teia were on the throne instead?
Rest in Peaches by Alex Brown Page Street YA
Quinn Marcelo wouldn’t necessarily win the award for Most Popular Person at her school, but unbeknownst to her peers, Quinn entertains them at every football, basketball, and baseball game―as Peaches the Parrot, her high school’s God-like mascot.
When someone sabotages the legendary Peaches costume at the Homecoming Game, Quinn’s left unmasked and humiliated. After all, Peaches’ identity was a closely guarded secret and a point of pride for nearly everyone at Olivia Newton-John High. As if that wasn’t enough, Little Peaches, a new, real parrot that the PTA got to enhance the Peaches Experience, is kidnapped right after Quinn’s unmasking.
Determined to uncover the culprit, Quinn publicly unravels the lives of everyone in her path―including Tessa Banks, the most popular girl in school―in a no-holds-barred conspiracy-fueled investigation. But when a killer starts going after the people implicated in Quinn’s mascot disaster, she must race to uncover the truth behind her feathery faux-pas―before the truth kills her, too.
Tangleroot by Kalela Williams Feiwel & Friends
Noni Reid has grown up in the shadow of her mother, Dr. Radiance Castine, renowned scholar of Black literature, who is alarmingly perfect at just about everything.
When Dr. Castine takes a job as the president of the prestigious Stonepost College in rural Virginia, Noni is forced to leave her New England home and, most importantly, a prime internship and her friends. She and her mother move into the “big house” on Tangleroot Plantation.
Tangleroot was built by one of Noni’s ancestors, an enslaved man named Cuffee Fortune―who Dr. Castine believes was also the original founder of Stonepost College, and that the school was originally formed for Black students. Dr. Castine spends much of her time trying to piece together enough undeniable truth in order to change the name of the school in Cuffee’s honor―and to force the university to reckon with its own racist past.
Meanwhile, Noni hates everything about her new home, but finds herself morbidly fascinated by the white, slaveholding family who once lived in it. Slowly, she begins to unpeel the layers of sinister history that envelop her Virginia town, her mother’s workplace, her ancestry―and her life story as she knew it. Through it all, she must navigate the ancient prejudices of the citizens in her small town, and ultimately, she finds herself both affirming her mother’s position and her own―but also discovering a secret that changes everything.
Legend of the White Snake by Sher Lee Quill Tree
A snake spirit transforms into a boy and must hide his true identity after falling for a headstrong prince in this lush, romantic retelling of the traditional Chinese folktale.
When Prince Xian was a boy, a white snake bit his mother and condemned her to a slow, painful death. The only known cure is an elusive spirit pearl—or an antidote created from the rare white snake itself. Desperate and determined, Xian travels to the city of Changle, where an oracle predicted he would find and capture a white snake.
Seven years ago, Zhen, a white snake in the West Lake, consumed a coveted spirit pearl, which gave him special powers—including the ability to change into human form.
In Changle, Xian encounters an enigmatic but beautiful stable boy named Zhen. The two are immediately drawn to each other, but Zhen soon realizes that he is the white snake Xian is hunting. As their feelings grow deeper, will the truth about Zhen’s identity tear them apart?
Halfway There: A Graphic Memoir of Self-Discovery by Christine Mari Inzer Little, Brown Ink
A poignant graphic memoir from rising star Christine Mari, following her college year abroad in Japan, as she struggles to reconcile both sides of her mixed-race identity. Christine has always felt she is just Half American, half Japanese. As a biracial Japanese American who was born in Tokyo but raised in the US, she knows all too well what it’s like to be a part of two different worlds but never feeling as though you belong to either. Now on the brink of adulthood, Christine decides it’s time to return to the place she once called home. So she sets forth on a year abroad in Tokyo, believing that this is where she truly belongs. After years of feeling like an outsider, now she will finally be complete. Except…Tokyo isn’t the answer she thought it would be. Instead of fitting in, Christine finds herself a fish out of water, as being half of two cultures isolates her in ways she’d never imagined. All she can do is try to stay afloat for the rest of the year—still figuring out who she is, what she wants in life, and whether she’ll ever truly be more than halfway there. Author-illustrator Christine Mari explores what it means to lose and find yourself in this moving narrative of belonging and home.
I Was Told There Would Be Romance by Marie Arnold Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Fifteen-year-old Fancy Augustine is a Haitian American girl with simple desires. She’d like to trade in her floppy, oversize boobs for cute, perky ones. She’d love a boyfriend. And she’s desperate for an invite to the biggest event of the school Imani Park’s birthday party. When Fancy learns her BFF, Tilly, has received a coveted invite and has a secret boyfriend, she is (understandably) devastated and wholeheartedly determined to do whatever it takes to get her own happily ever after.
So what if she makes a deal with the devil (Imani) that guarantees her an invite—but only if she can bring a boyfriend? And what’s so bad about letting her crush, Rahim, believe that she can create a voodoo potion for him in exchange for him posing as her boyfriend? And, yeah, maybe she’s destroying her friendship with Tilly and falling hopelessly behind in her schoolwork, but Fancy knows it’ll all be worth it in the end. Plus, it’s not like Fancy’s parents would really make good on their threats of sending her back to Haiti…right?

as far 90s shows, did anyone watch any of these:
teen angel it was like on after sabrina or something during the tgif era of the 90s? i found it lowkey funny, idk if it was like shortlived i assume that, but idk if it was good or cringey? i think it was only on for one or two at the most seasons, i remember he would literally talk to the moon/stars/god but also like have teenager hijinks
smart guy as it is, a smart guy. young kid maybe 10 years old in college, skiped grade school/high school and is now in college with his dumb brother. i think it was on disney channel.
my brother and me a two season show on nickelodeon in the 90s, i don't remember that much about it tbh, just that it existed and i know i watched it but idk if it held my attention. it seemed run of the mill early nickeloeon two brothers, their friends and random things that would happen like in the style of most of the shows of the time.
gulah gulah island a show about a family and a large amphibian friend of their family on a island (where is gulahgulah?) i was able to do a killer impression of the pollywog. i would make a garden bc the mom had one in the summer before kindergarten and i would sing plant a seed in my garden, my garden my garden plant a seed in my garden watch it grow 🎶 i still if i hear it on a nostalgic video sing the theme. i found out the husband and wife are an actual couple irl earlier this year, and simeon (sp?) and shayna i think was their child biologically. the other two kids were hired to be their other kids, the one daughter was on keenan and kel as far as i know. she played keenan's sister who crushed on kel after gulah gulah ended.
pete and pete a show in the 90's quirky as all get out. good music, good vibes, a child with a beautiful mermaid tattoo and more questions than answers tbh. the mom had a plate in her head, thee dad was oblivious, speaking of oblivious the next show:
the secret world of alex mac yet another 90's show, about a girl with a secret, which the theme gives you the run down, alex is not average in the slightest. i loved that show and people often forget all about it.
so let's just say everyone knows sabrina, but do they remember clarissa? if you don't know, clarissa explains it all. i think there were a few things she didn't know about, or left out. clarissa was the effortlessly cool girl, but she was also painfully average and her brother reminded her of that, much to her chargrin. from her cool ass bedroom, her boy bestie sam who'd climb in the window via ladder, and she nonchalantly greeted him with a friendly, "hi sam!", her weird ginger brother who was like a 'genius' but a jerk at the same time, her descriptions and slideshows about things she'd explain in detail at length, her dated little computer, her pet in the sandbox and a lot more things i forgot or are self-explanatory. na na nanna, nananananaana, hey cool!
doug if he's not bangin' on a trashcan, blasting killer tofu, arguing with his parents, clashing with his thespian sister, in the company of a blue dog named after dinner parents cook and kids love to hate, beefing with a rival in a leather jacket with a cat sidekick, or with mayor's stuck up daughter, surrounded by random kids with quirky names and dining a cool hangout called the honker burger he was writing in a journal or dreaming of fake worlds that are anything but normal. he was doug was one of the defining guys in 90s cool back in the day, he was cool bc he wasn't a showboat or an over confident or arrogant guy like chalky studebaker at times, or green-skinned rival roger who came off like a coward internally but tough and had an obnoxious laugh on the outside. he 's a guy in middle school with tensions with the principal, a total everyman with a big imagination who wrote his dreams, thoughts, and hopes in a journal, crushed on his girl next door/the show essential 'good girl' patti mayonnaise and of course, he had a loyal bestie skeeter. if it were 99-the 00s it was the spongebob/patrick dynamic, and even doug had an alter ego which was quail man. i believe the original story of doug, he was new to town and he came to be fast friends with skeeter, and quick enemies with their principal who always threatened him to put things on his permanent record, which i was afraid of when it was time for me to go to school when it came to going to the office for anything tbh.
#so here's a random set of shows#i wrote this after talking about big wolf on campus#these 90s-early 00s shows were vibes#musing#thoughts#anaylsysis#do you remember?#remembering#90s#tv#television#entertainment#nostalgia#00s

Cdawg — For Ed, did you have any input into the Baldur's Gate III video game?
Augustoc — I'd like to expand this question: How much input do you have in different sources of media? I'm curious about how these 4 kinds of media compare in regard to Ed's level input: 1. An official WotC published module, like Princes of the Apocalypse 2. A semi-official DMs guild supplement that you co-authored 3. A novel set in the Realms, but written by a different author, like Brimstone Angels (gosh I miss those so bad) 4. A video game set in the Forgotten Realms, specifically Baldur's Gate 3
Cdawg — I'm also curious, after all these years, if Ed has played any of the Forgotten Realms games and if so, what he enjoyed most about them.
Ed Greenwood — Warning to all: computer games have the strongest NDAs, they never get removed, and so I can often say little.
I have played a FEW of the FR games, usually in demo mode. My perennial problem was that I was writing on Macs, and the games were designed on Macs but released for PCs. My secondary problem was time: as in, I didn't have any to spend on playing computer games. I made a few exceptions, the Lucasfilm game LOOM for example, and have been known to play Solitaire during boring business calls, but...no time. Sigh.
And as for my involvement:
1. An official WotC published module, like Princes of the Apocalypse: I don't get to see the main text, but I get given a writing assignment (e.g. for Volo's Guide it was huge batches of Volo and Elminster back-and-forth comments, and an intro; about a quarter of those comments got used) and do it. I always give extra, in hopes the lore can be used elsewhere and elsewhen. It's more important to get the Realms out there than to get paid or credit or control...
2. A semi-official DMs guild supplement that you co-authored: Border Kingdoms is official, Thay is not, because we broke the "stay on the Sword Coast" rule. For both of those, Alex Kammer bankrolled, directed the art, oversaw the layout, and wrote the adventure. Alan Patrick did new classes and monsters. I did world lore, from Shel's tour to designing the heraldry to the daily life details. My jam.
3. A novel set in the Realms, but written by a different author, like Brimstone Angels (gosh I miss those so bad): Erin is a good friend and for all of those novels she was consulting with me and with Brian Cortijo, "the" Cormyr expert, to get details right (like what plants they would find if camping in this spot, or what local officers would be stationed where, etc.) We wrote back and forth often, and still check in with each other...and if you love fantasy, I HIGHLY recommend Erin's new series; the first book, EMPIRE OF EXILES, is out now and she's working on the second.
4. A video game set in the Forgotten Realms, specifically Baldur's Gate 3: When it comes to video games, companies like to keep things VERY secret from non-staff. Sometimes Wizards would involve me in the approvals process (where companies send stuff, or ask stuff, of Wizards), and I have on several occasions (Turbine's anniversary release of the Haunted Halls, for one, and something NDA'd that I just did, for another) voiced NPCs or narrated voiceovers, or both.
Ed Greenwood — For Baldur's Gate III: almost none. Baldur's Gate II: I wrote hundreds of titles for books that player characters can find in the library, and provided NPC backstories and local lore (Realmslore "colour").

Support a Fresh Interactive Storytelling with The Heirloom
The Heirloom mysterious thriller adventure game is due to end Kickstarter funding for Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. As a result of the work and effort from developer Babubi Games. The crowdfunding campaign is still going strong. Have you ever been intrigued by Scotland and its rich folklore? There's something fresh in the world of interactive storytelling that might just pique your interest. The newly-formed Babubi Games, co-founded by talented artist Hikanart and visionary designer Alex Streltsov, is doing well in crowdfunding. They've titled it The Heirloom. Now, why should you be excited about it? Let's dive into a mysterious thriller adventure on Linux. The Hebrides, a group of islands off the west coast of Scotland, brimming with legends and mysteries. This place serves as the backdrop for The Heirloom adventure. Here, we follow the journey of a 16 year old girl named Marla and her younger brother, Jack. They've faced some hardships, including becoming orphans, and now they're moving to this nearly empty town on the Inner Hebrides. Due to live with their reclusive old grandfather. But The Heirloom isn't just a story about settling into a new home. Strange events begin to unfold, and it seems the islanders are trying their best to ignore them. You're due to dive deep into the heart of these events and unveil family secrets. While finding out the truth about their grandfather's old lighthouse.
The Heirloom — Kickstarter Launch Teaser
youtube
What Makes It Special?
Rich Atmosphere: The whole setting is influenced by the Hebrides and traditional Scottish tales. It feels like stepping into another world.
Engaging Dialogues: Interactions with characters are packed with emotion and humor. They're not your typical conversations; they've got flair and personality.
Choices Matter: As you explore, the decisions you make can shape the The Heirloom storyline. It's like a maze with different paths and outcomes.
Visually Appealing: The visuals are crafted with care, showcasing hand-drawn art that truly stands out. There are also interactive scenes that blend seamlessly into the narrative.
Innovative Mechanics: Expect unique ways to engage and solve challenges. It's not just about pressing buttons; it's about thinking and interacting with the world.
Big names like Rebecca Wang and Andy Mack, who've been a part of some pretty popular titles, are lending their voices to the main characters in The Heirloom. That's a cherry on top! Once The Heirloom is ready for the world to experience, you'll be able to get it on most major computer systems, like Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. They're even considering making it accessible on Steam Deck. Plus, if English isn't your preferred language, no worries! It'll be available in eight other languages. Lastly, for those keen on collecting, the crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter campaign is down to its final 2 days. The rewards are tempting, including a limited edition package with a hand-painted figure of Marla and more. The Heirloom mysterious thriller adventure is due to be a mix of mystery, adventure, and drama. Also taking place in a world deeply rooted in Scottish lore. If you've been on the lookout for a fresh game, keep an eye out for its release in October 2024, likely around Halloween on Steam and GOG.

13. “Don’t be sorry… it was kind of cute, actually.”
______
Here’s the thing. Luke Patterson isn’t the tidiest person, exactly. His room tends to be messy, his things tend to be scattered all around the studio, and he can never find the shirt he’s looking for. Sometimes he wakes up in a Nirvana mood and all he can find are Green Day shirts. Sometimes he puts his journal down somewhere, because he has to grab a guitar before the riff in his head leaves him again. And then he forgets where he put it and searches for hours until Reggie, Alex, or Bobby hand it to him as if it was right there all along.
It’s just that he gets so into his music that he forgets things sometimes. He also forgets time a lot and then he doesn’t have any left to clean or bring organise his stuff. It drives his Mom rather mad, but Luke can’t help it. He tries, really, but two days later his room always seems to be back to its original state of chaos.
So imagine his surprise when he gets home after practice one night and finds his room all tidy and clean with small notes pinned to random objects, commenting things like ‘Do you really need this, Luke?’ or just ‘Hahaha.’ or ‘Omg, you kept this.’ in what he identifies as Reggie’s handwriting. He’s read enough of his country songs to know. Smiling, he picks up a stuffed bear Reggie once won for him at a fair they went to together when Alex and Bobby were both busy with their own families. Reggie pinned a note to it, saying ‘Nice to see you keeping the tokens of my affection.’
He hugs the bear close to his chest and keeps looking around his room for more of Reggie’s inane commentary. He finds dozens of notes, and decides to keep them where they are. They make something flutter beneath his ribcage, and fill him with warmth and a sense of comfort he only knows from playing his music. He’s not sure how he feels about Reggie coming to his house when he’s not there and rummaging through his things, but at the same time he knows there aren’t any secrets he’s keeping from him anyway, and Reggie knew about his latest fight with his mother. It was pretty bad, so Luke spent the night at the studio where his friend found him in the morning. So, Reggie knew he struggles with keeping his room clean again, causing him to fight with Emily and feel miserable about it, and he decided to help, apparently.
“I’m sorry for not asking first,” Reggie says suddenly, and Luke spins around to find him standing in the doorway, smiling a little sheepishly. “Your mom let me in,” he answers Luke’s unasked question.
“Don’t be sorry,” Luke says softly, gesturing around his room. “This… it was kind of cute, actually.”
Reggie leans against the doorframe and crosses his arms in front of his chest as he raises a suggestive eyebrow and smiles so brightly, Luke feels himself physically react to the sight.
“Aw, you think I’m cute, do you?”
Luke snorts.
“Yeah, man. The cutest.” He’s not lying. Reggie is… the best friend in the world, but he’s also beautiful, and funny, and Luke loves him so much, really.
Oh. Well, okay. That’s a new thought.
Luke hums curiously as he turns away from Reggie to hide the blush rising to his cheeks. He spots another note at the foot of his bed. ‘Remember when we used to pretend your bed is a stage and performed really bad versions of Queen songs on your first guitar?’
Luke does remember. And he feels warm all over again. Oh. So, Reggie? It’s Reggie for him? The decision is quickly made. Luke has always been an impulsive person, and if he wants something, he goes for it. Apparently he wants Reggie now.
He’s about to turn around when he feels Reggie wrap his arms around his waist from behind and rest his chin on Luke’s shoulder.
“You don’t have to hide your pretty blush, you know?” Reggie says, voice lower than usual. Luke feels it right down to his bones.
“Aw, you think I’m pretty, do you?” Luke says, matching Reggie’s tone from before and grinning as he turns his head. It’s an awkward angle, but they’re so close, their noses almost touching, and Luke suddenly has trouble breathing.
“Yeah, man. The prettiest,” Reggie replies, imitating Luke from before, but sounding no less sincere.
Luke hums again.
“This is new. I have to admit I did not see this one coming,” he says softly, curiously glancing at Reggie’s lips. “You and I?”
Reggie leans a little closer, and his lips are ghosting over Luke’s, almost touching, but not quite yet.
“Neither did I. But I had an epiphany while cleaning your room and finding all these memories of us,” Reggie says, his voice barely more than a whisper. He chuckles. “Well, there goes my heterosexuality.”
And then he kisses Luke, and Luke drops the bear he was still holding to turn in his arms and kiss him back, arms coming around his neck to keep him close.
“That’s overrated anyway,” he comments in between kisses, just before they fall onto Luke’s bed together. The very same one they used to play rockstars on when they were 11.
Later that night, Luke finds more notes as he happily sings ABBA songs to himself. ‘Hello pretty boy. What’s up?’ is written on a small yellow note on the corner of his mirror. On his CD copy of The Other Side of the Mirror by Stevie Nicks, Reggie left a note saying ‘I hope I get to kiss you one day just for owning this. Not sure if I mean that platonically… We should probably talk. I hope you don’t find this before I get a chance to talk to you. If you do… well. Surprise? Reggie is having a sexuality crisis and it’s all your fault.’
And when he picks out a fresh shirt from his closet, a note falls out informing him that Luke’s lack of sleeves on most of his shirts played a significant role in Reggie’s crisis about his sexuality.
“You dork,” he mumbles to himself, putting on a Fleetwood Mac shirt for good measure and singing Super Trouper as he dances down the stairs to help his mother with dinner.
“Aren’t you chipper today?” Emily says with a smile when she spots him. “I think Reggie was humming Dancing Queen when he left earlier. May I ask what put you two into such a delightful mood?”
Luke beams at her, shrugging as he does a pirouette.
“I think we’re in love, Mom,” he tells her honestly. He figures there is no need to lie to her, and he’s feeling way too happy to keep it to himself. Emily only looks a little surprised.
“With each other?” she asks.
Luke nods. “Yeah.”
Emily smiles and reaches out to squeeze Luke’s arm.
“Well, that’s lovely. He’s a fine young man, I’ve always thought so.”
Luke hugs her, just because he can and he doesn’t know why they fight so much when they also frequently have moments like this, when he feels so blessed to have her.
The next day, when Luke walks into the studio and finds his friends already gathered and ready with their instruments, he feels all warm and fluttery again as soon as he spots Reggie, so he walks right over to him and kisses him right on the mouth.
Bobby hoots, Alex claps, and Reggie is eager to kiss back.
“Sorry,” Luke murmurs against his lips.
“Luke?” Reggie says as he pulls back. “If you ever apologise for kissing me again, I’m gonna write a hundred country songs about you, and I will get famous with them, and you’ll forever be known as that weird queer country dude’s boyfriend.”
Luke laughs and raises his hands in surrender.
“What a horrible fate. Alright, no apologies from now on.”
He kisses Reggie again, and this time he doesn’t say sorry. He’s not actually sorry, anyway.

……………………………………………………………………
Jo stared out the window as Alex drove over to the hospital. They estimated that she was around eight weeks now and Carina had her set up with her first appointment and ultrasound today. They were headed into work right now and the appointment was on their lunch break rather than on a day off so as not to arouse suspicion from everyone around them. Jo knew that Carina would ask her about her medical history and she knew she should tell Alex she had been pregnant before the appointment.
This morning when Alex woke her up with a smile and said she was eight weeks. He was so excited and so was she, but then it hit her. She was eight weeks pregnant, a week more than she was when she was pregnant last time.
For the first week after she found out she was pregnant the first time with Paul, Jo wanted to keep it. She thought she could keep it. A part of her thought that Paul would change and that he wouldn’t hit her anymore, but then he kicked her until he broke her ribs and threw her across the living room floor. After that, Jo realized that regardless of her pregnancy, he would always abuse her. Paul wouldn't change and she knew he would hurt their baby too. Having the abortion was her first act of rebellion against him, which led her to form a plan to leave him.
Her pregnancy this time around was extremely different, Jo was safe and loved. Alex had been there from the beginning and he was so kind to her. He was helpful and caring in a special way and it was so good. He would carry her to the bed after she fell asleep on the couch. He always cleaned up after her when she accidentally vomited on the floor. He had taken over most of the household chores so she could rest. He made her mac and cheese every day because it was the only thing she could keep down. More importantly, Jo knew that Alex would never lay a hand on her or their child. She was so happy too, they were both so happy to have a child together, and sometimes they would just glance at each other and share an excited smile.
Yet, memories of her past pregnancy had come up like a sense of deja vu. When she threw away the pregnancy tests and had the urge to hide them. When the smell of cooked broccoli turned her stomach, or when she woke up in a panic because she left the dishes in the sink. It was only for a moment, but the lingering fear of Paul's abuse still haunted her. All morning she had thought about how to tell Alex about her pregnacy and abortion. She didn't fear telling him, she just kept the secret for so long she didn't know how to say it.
“Hey,” Alex's voice and his hand on her leg bouncing up and down, pulled her out of her head. She didn't realize they had stopped moving and were parked in the parking lot until he spoke. “Jo?”
His look of worry deepened as she turned to look at him. Her chest quivered as she tried to take a deep breath in and Jo reached out her hand to him. Alex grasped her hand and held it close to his chest before he gave it a squeeze. Every woman's experience with abortion was different, for Jo it had to be a secret to keep herself safe. She buried it inside of her. She pushed it down for so long. She hadn’t told anybody about it, back then to keep herself safe. When she left, it felt like an unnecessary thing to bring up, but as she looked over at Alex now, she knew that she didn't have to keep it inside anymore.
Yet, everything about Paul still hurts. There was an ache in her chest whenever memories of him came flooding back. Jo focused on Alex, who was good and safe, and tried to remember that she was okay. It took her a few deep breaths to finally calm down as she opened her eyes and looked over at him again. He was safe and she would be safe if she told him. He wouldn't lash out, he wouldn't hurt her, Alex was safe.
“I've been pregnant before and I had an abortion.” Jo finally managed to say as she looked over at him. She took another deep breath after the words left her lips and she continued. “That's why I knew that I was pregnant, despite the false negative. My symptoms, the way I felt, it’s exactly how it was the last time I was pregnant.”
Jo paused as she watched Alex take in the news. He rubbed his hand over his cheek and his eyes were wide as he looked away to the parking lot in front of them. Jo squeezed his hand and that seemed to bring him back. As he looked at her, she could tell that he was still in shock, but she could see he was slowly absorbing what she had said.
“Jo, are you saying that you,” Alex sighed, as he struggled to say what he wanted. “Are you saying that you, that you were pregnant and I didn't know? Was it after, was it when we were broken up after I hurt DeLuca?”
“No, no,” Jo said quickly, shaking her head. “It wasn't when I was with you.”
“Okay,” Alex said, letting out a breath as he nodded and looked over at her squeezing her hand. “Does that mean it was with him?”
Alex looked over at her and she knew that the answer was in her eyes.
“It was before I left Paul. I found out I was pregnant and at the time I thought I could keep it, but then he threw me across the room and I knew I couldn't. I didn't know how to leave him then, but I knew I couldn't bring a child into that world. I knew that they couldn't fear Paul like I did. I was seven weeks along when I had an abortion.”
Jo didn't regret her abortion, the moment it was done she felt nothing but relief, relief that it was over, and that she didn't have to fear for anyone else's life. Although she still feared for her own. But it wasn't an easy thing to do, and the weight of it all, the fact that she had to do it in the first place because she was married to a monster. The fact that she couldn't tell anybody in fear that he would kill her because of it, kept her silent all these years.
“That's part of the reason why I was so terrified to have kids, not because of you, never because of you Alex,” Jo said as she reached out and brushed his cheek with her hand.
“I always knew that you would be an amazing father and that you would love and support our kid no matter what. But the last time that I thought about bringing a child into this world, all I could think about was how much pain and sorrow they would go through because their father was a monster. I knew that they would never be free of him. Even if I left while I was pregnant. If Paul found out he would fight me for custody and he would probably win and if I raised the child with him they would see the way that he abused me and they would internalize that. Or worse, he would eventually start to hurt them as well, because, because they cried for too long, or because they threw a tantrum, or because they didn't get good grades, or for no reason at all. I thought that he would start hitting them because hitting me wasn't enough…”
Jo trailed off as her voice started to break because the heartache and pain that Paul brought to her life was still a wound that right now, felt fresh. She would normally blame her hormones, but everything about Paul and about her past was hard to talk about. Even now therapy had helped a little bit but the memories still held the pain of her abuse.
“Oh Jo,” Alex said as he tilted his head and kissed the hand she had held against him and with the other hand he reached out and gently held her face as he rubbed his thumb along her cheek.
“I was just so terrified to bring a child into the world back then that I swore off having kids because there was too much pain and too much heartbreak. I knew that if I had a child and I died that they would end up in foster care like we did with no one to look out for them.”
“Jo, that's not going to happen to our kid ever,” Alex's voice was a whisper as he gently reassured her. “Our kid is going to have Meredith, and Link, and Amelia, and Maggie and hell, even Levi and Bailey and there's a whole hospital of people who would make sure that our child would be okay if anything ever happened to us.”
“I know,” Jo said with a smile because she knew his words were true. “Our child has a whole family of people that love and adore them already and they would step up and take care of them and I am so grateful for that, but that doesn't change how I feel and what I went through, but right now I have you and things are good. I love you and our baby and I’m so happy to be a mom.”
Jo closed her eyes as she finished taking in a deep breath and letting it out. The tears that had collected in her eyes started to fall down her cheeks.
“I just wanted you to know and now you know all of my secrets,” Jo said with a slight smile as she looked over at Alex, letting out a breath as she felt the weight of it lift off of her. “You know everything about me.”
Alex just nodded and Jo could tell that he didn't know what to say, but he squeezed her hand and that was enough. Just his mere presence had always been a comfort to her. Jo took a deep breath as she looked away from him.
“The only other person I told about this was my birth mom. I don't know why I told her about it. I just, I wanted to connect with her, but I didn't ever view that pregnancy as a piece of Paul, the way she saw me as a piece of, of my birth father. She couldn't even stand to touch me. I, I reached out my hand to her and she, she pulled away.”
Jo’s face contorted into a grimace. She squeezed her eyes shut as if it would stop the tears and tried to take a deep breath, but it came out in a shaky whimper. Alex knew all of this of course she had eventually open up to him about everything that she and her birth mom had spoken about with the exception of her abortion.
Jo put a hand over her belly as if she was holding her baby. She couldn't wait until she was actually showing so she could feel something under her hand. “I will never do that to our baby, I love them so much already and I will never pull away from them, I don't think I could ever let them go.”
Alex reached out to her placing one arm around her shoulders as if he could try and hold her despite the console between them. “You can have them 24/7 if you want, you can hold them for as long as you need, okay.”
Jo looked over at him and nodded her head and pulled her hand back as she looked down at her belly. Jo didn't break out into sobs, but the tears kept falling. She just sat in the car with trembling breaths and tears, twirling her wedding rings around her finger over and over again. She was waiting to fall apart, but for what she didn't know.
“Hang on, I'm going to come around to you,” Alex said and she barely heard the door open and shut before he raced around the car and opened her door.
He leaned over to hug her and it was a little awkward, but she put her head on his shoulder and let out a sigh. Alex's arms were safe, like a castle she could take refuge in and Jo fell apart. Her silent tears turned into wails as she cried against his shoulder. Her sobs echoed around the parking garage and the tears seemed never ending as she clung to Alex.
Jo clung to him and he undid her seatbelt. They switched places so she could sit in his lap and Jo put a hand on her belly. As they sat in the parking garage Alex just rubbed up and down her back holding her. Eventually, Jo cried herself out and leaned her head against his shoulder. She was suddenly incredibly tired, something she was now realizing was just the effect of her pregnancy, and closed her eyes as she sighed.
“Why don’t we go home?” Alex asked, running his hand up her back as attentive to her as ever. “We’ll call in sick, Carina will understand and Hayes can cover my service. I'll call your therapist, Carly and Michelle, and see if they have an opening today. Do you want to cancel your prenatal appointment as well or just lie when we come in later, and say that’s why we're there?”
“We can keep the appointment, but I just want to go home,” Jo said with a nod.
She spent all her energy and now she knew there was no way she could physically or emotionally work today. All she wanted to do was crawl up on the couch with Reeses and rest her head in Alex's lap.
Alex didn't move right away. He held her until she almost fell asleep and then he slipped out from behind her. Alex buckled her in, kissed her forehead, and Jo was out like a light. She woke up to the squeaky door of their loft opening as Alex carried her in. She tightened her grip around his neck as Alex walked over to the couch.
He sat down and Reeses jumped up next to her. Jo pulled him into her lap and she thought she'd fall asleep again, but then she got a whiff of his puppy breath. Jo leaned forward and puked right there on the carpet before she even knew she was going to do it.
“I'm sorry, I'm so sorry,” Jo said, shaking her head as she tensed up. She expected him to yell and scream at her, to hit her, but he didn’t. Alex wasn't Paul, he was so much better.
“Hey, none of that, it’s okay,” Alex said, as he rubbed her back and grabbed Reeses, holding him back, knowing that he would try and eat it. “It was an accident, I'm not mad, it's okay.”
Jo nodded as she took in his words and settled against the couch taking Reeses. Alex had been more understanding than she could ever have imagined, as she had thrown up unexpectedly a dozen times over the past few weeks since they found out she was pregnant. Jo closed her eyes as she leaned back against the couch and Alex rubbed her back. Every time she threw up Alex would rub her back before he cleaned up after her. It was nice, especially as it had gotten to the point that Jo was barely able to keep anything down.
Alex came back when he was done, she lifted up her head so he could sit and she laid down with her head on his lap. Alex ran his fingers through her hair, brushing it out before he began to braid it into a French braid. Jo had never learned to braid hair. Growing up no one taught her or did it for her. At one foster home there was a doll with long blonde hair that she loved. She tried so hard to braid it just like her foster sister had done, but it just ended up in a tangled mess that she got punished for later so she gave up on it. It never really mattered until she got older and she needed to learn how to put her hair up for surgery, but even then she usually just threw it up in a bun. However, one time Alex offered to braid it for her. He had learned how to braid hair so he could do Amber's hair and now most days before surgery he braided her hair for her, even without her asking. It was one of those little acts of love that Jo loved so much.
“Thank you for cleaning up after me.”
“No problem, I’d rather you only puke once instead of a dozen times like you would if you tried to clean it up yourself. Besides I’m used to it from the Ped’s floor, Arizona and Addison used to punish me with diaper changes and vomit clean up,” Alex said with a shrug as if it was nothing.
“I still appreciate it, I appreciate everything you do for me Alex,” Jo said as she reached up to hold his cheek. “With you, I feel safe. I trust you. I know that you will never hurt me or our child. You will always do everything in your power to protect us and take care of us. From the moment we found out I was pregnant, I never worried about our baby or you, because you’re a good man, Alex and I could never ask for a better husband or a better father for my child.”
Alex seemed overwhelmed with her words. She knew it was the most meaningful thing she could ever say to him, as it was everything he strived to be and every word was true. He smiled and kissed her hand before he leaned down and kissed her forehead.
All three of them curled up on the couch and put a movie on. Jo looked up at Alex from her place on his lap, it was a weird angle and she mostly just got his chin, but she loved it. She closed her eyes and fell asleep in his lap again, knowing she was safe in his arms.

//March 27th 1967//
Chris heard the door close from her place on the floor. "Babe, I'm home!" Ginny's cheery voice bounced from the doorway. She heard the clatter of keys and the dropping of a bag. it all she could think about was how much of a disaster her day had been. First, she'd been late to the office because her train had been late, then she realised she'd forgotten her lunch and finally, the asshole higher-ups had humiliated her again because she was a woman. If was bullshit! She was better than half the fuckers there.
"Honey?" Chris was snapped out of her thoughts by the sound of her lover's voice searching for her.
"'M in here, Gin," she whined from the floor of their living room. Before she knew it, Ginny was standing over her, a confused look on her face, tilting he'd head in that adorable way she did that made her look a lot like a puppy, a habit she'd adopted from Neil.
"What're you doing down there, love?" Chris groaned again and put her hands over her eyes. She felt Ginny sit down next to her and pull her head into her lap, gently stroking her hair.
"Rough day?" She asked gently. Chris nodded, not removing her hands from her face. "D'you wanna talk about it." Chris sighed.
"It's just been a bunch of shit honestly." She removed her hands to get a look at Ginny, resting them on her stomach instead. She saw her lover's face harden.
"Is it those squares from the office again? If they've messed with you again, I'll kill them myself." Chris huffed a laugh at her lover's antics.
"It's just the normal stuff, no need to get involved." Ginny gave an irritated sigh.
"It's not fine, Chris. They're treating you like shit for no reason. Your writing is incredible! Why does it matter that you're a woman?" Chris smiled up at her, the other woman didn't notice, too caught up in her antics. "It's such bullshit! Do you think Todd would have to go through shit like that? No. You've worked just as hard as he has and and people still don't take you seriously." Chris hummed and traced Ginny's lips with her fingers.
"Todd still has to deal with a lot of shit. Being a woman just isn't one of them." Ginny frowned.
"Yeah, that's true. Still sucks though. I hate having to watch people belittle you. You're the most amazing person I've ever met." Chris grinned and sat up, facing her lover. She took the brunette's face in her hands.
"Look, it sucks. I'm not going to tell you it doesn't. Everyday, I wish it wasn't like this and that I'd be respected by everyone but that's just the way it is." Ginny was about to cut in but she didn't let her. "But, that doesn't mean I'm going to stop fighting. I've earned my place here. Plus, I have you and Todd and Neil and Charlie and while I'd love outside approval, the only real approval I need is you guys'." Ginny's hands came up and over her own, smiling proudly.
"I love you. I love you so much." Chris leaned forward and met her in a dizzying kiss, trying to communicate the pure love and adoration she had for the woman in front of her.
"I love you too." She whispered into her lips. "I love you more than anything." Ginny's lips traveled down her throat and for a while, she didn't think of work (or anything other than Ginny for that matter) at all.
Some while later, the two of them sat of the couch together, watching the Andy Griffith Show. It was a nice evening, it was sprinkling lightly outside and the cool weather made Chris feel better. Around five thirty, Ginny checked her watch.
"Shit," she muttered. Chris pressed a kiss to her jaw.
"What's wrong, love?"
"Todd's out late tonight, meeting with someone about his book or something and I don't think he left Neil anything to eat." Chris snickered. Neil, as lovely as he was, couldn't cook for shit. If they left him to his own devices, he'd end up with burnt mac and cheese and half the kitchen blacked with soot.
"Should we invite him over for dinner then?" Ginny looked at her.
"Are you sure? We can just relax with the two of us if you're not up to it."
"Have him over, he is your husband after all." Ginny huffed before speaking.
"You know that's only a technicality, Noel!" She said before playfully hitting Chris on the shoulder as she laughed. Once their laughter died down, Ginny pressed her lips go Chris' in a silent thank you.
It was true. Earlier that year, all four of them had a wedding ceremony. First, a hurried one at a cheap chapel where Neil and Ginny exchanged vows (trying their hardest to make the other laugh) before Chris and Todd did the same thing (also making up total bullshit). Then, after that trainwreck, once they were legally married to avoid suspicion, the four met their friends in Chris and Ginny's living room for a real (and very much illegal) wedding.
Neil and Todd went first, Charlie as Neil's best man and Jeff as Todd's while Knox 'officiated' the rest of them crowded around in the way too small room and cheered once they kissed at the end.
Ginny and Chris were second. It's still the happiest day of her life. Even though she's legally married to Todd, the look on Ginny's face when she read her vows and the hollering and champagne and cake made everything worth it. Cameron was her own best man, Charlie's partner, Alex, being Ginny's (those two had made fast friends and they were overjoyed to be Ginny's best person)
They were luckier than most. They had managed to find a house for people like them in New York, two buildings connected by a basement door. Chris and Ginny lived in one with Neil and Todd in the other, creating an allusion of two straight couples living next to each other instead of the truth, one person from each household being able to switch quickly if necessary. She wouldn't give up this little life if hers for the world.
Chris got up to start making the pasta as Ginny ran to go fetch Neil. As the water was boiling, the two brunette's trailed into the kitchen, Neil carrying a bottle. He smiled brightly when he saw her.
"Chris! Thank you for having me over." He pressed a kiss to her cheek before passing the bottle to Ginny and leaning against their dining table. "I brought some wine as a way to thank you." He smiled his classic Neil Perry grin as Ginny examined the label.
"Neil," she snorted, reading the label. "this is grape juice." Chris burst out laughing as Neil hurried over and took the bottle from Ginny.
"No, no, I could've sworn this was wine." The two women laughed at Neil's fumbling.
"Jesus Perry, you get one role without me and you become a mess!" It was true, for one of the first times in their careers, Neil had gotten a rather large role without her. Shortly after, Ginny had managed to snag an equally impressive part in another show but it still felt weird not seeing them together.
Neil grinned and rolled his eyes. "Well, it'll have to do."
Neil sat at the dining table as they worked on the spaghetti, not trusting him to help after what happened last time. Once the dish was done, the three of them migrated to the living room with their plates and glasses of grape juice.
They squished on the couch that was really only made for two (there was another couch plus a couple of arm chairs but that couch had the best view of the television and none of them were going to give that up) and watched some sappy soap opera that was playing while laughing at the characters and talking about their days.
"...and then Lizzie stepped on my toes again!" The girls wheezed, almost falling off the couch in the process. "It's not funny! This is the seventh time it's happened!" Ginny wiped tears from her eyes.
"Like you didn't do that when I taught you how to dance, you hypocrite!" Neil waved his hand around wildly.
"Yeah- when I was seventeen!" The hysterics dies down after a while and they all sat in a comfortable silence.
"Do you remember when I taught you to dance so you could impress Todd at the Welton-Henley dance in highschool? The one Chris snuck into." Neil nodded along knowingly. Chris looked at them shocked.
"That's what you two were up to?" She asked. Neil nodded.
"Yep. And if didn't even work." He sighed. Chris looked at him indignantly.
"Are you kidding?!? You should have seen him, he was all over you when you danced with Ginny. We couldn't stop looking at you two all night." Neil blushed before realising her words.
"Wait- we? You were looking at Gin?" Now it was Chris' turn to flush as she felt Ginny's eyes on her.
"Well... yeah. That's what got Todd and I bonding in the first place. Both of our pining for two hopeless theatre kids." She was met with two sharp 'hey!'s.
After Neil had left, they got into their bed and Ginny circled her arms around Chris' waist, resting her head on the nape of her neck. Chris hummed in content. "Was what you said earlier true? About watching me that dance?" Chris laughed and placed her hands on top of Ginny's.
"Of course. I couldn't take my eyes off you. I drank so much spiked punch just to get away from the feeling really." She felt a soft press of lips to her neck.
"I love you, Chris. I love you so much I don't even know how to describe it." Chris turned in her arms to face her lover.
"You're such a sap." She said lightly, tracing her face with her fingers. Ginny closed her eyes and reveled in the feeling. "I love you too. So much." A smile tugged on the brunette's lips.
Chris' life wasn't perfect by any means. She was living as a lesbian with a secret lover in 1967 and trying to make her way as a journalist in a male dominated industry while misogyny ran rampant without consequence. It would always be hard, at least to a degree, but right here, in bed with the person she loved more than anything in this world, all was good.

RNM Fandom Creators’ Week 2020 - Day 3: AUs
I LOOOOVE AUs! Love to write them, love to read them. Here are some of my faves.
Shadow Work
By @myrmidryad (AO3 author page)
This, to me, is one of the ultimate RNM fandom AUs. I’d recommend it to everyone. I can’t believe it’s been almost a year since it was posted - I was recovering from mastitis last Halloween, and was LIVING for the nightly updates of this fic. It’s impeccable - an awesomely spooky plot in which Alex is a shade, Michael is the ex who is back in his life, and there’s a mystery afoot involving the aliens. Alex, Alex - he’s written SO well in this, and there are some of the best passages regarding physical intimacy in the entire fandom. It’s heartbreaking in parts, too - there’s a moment where Alex asks Michael to clear the forces that have been “pushing” him, only to discover it changes nothing - it’s been his own psyche for the entire scene. Marvelous. I reread it during the pandemic and still just absolutely love it.
You ask me to enter but then you make me crawl
By @jule1122 (AO3 author page)
One of my favorite, favorite tropes is secret marriage, and this is such a gut wrenching fic that hinges on the idea that Michael and Alex are secretly married, and this fact isn’t revealed until years later when Alex is injured. The characterizations here are superb, ALL of them, with so many heartbreaking details. I cried, for real, at the end.
Satellite’s Gone by the Anonymous Roswell Author
The Roswell Anon has written so many great stories, but this is one of my absolute favorites. Michael leaves the planet but is still able to communicate, for a time. But all is not as it seems. So perfectly written, and so memorable, to me.
I can hold you now by @andrea-lyn
AO3 Author page
One of my favorites by a great author. I have reread this a number of times, and one of my favorite details is the visual of Michael crashing Alex’s wedding.
Too Busy being yours by @auselysium
AO3 author page
A fake dating AU! Poor Alex is pretty much pushed WELL past his breaking point just by Michael regaling his commanding officer’s family with his true feelings for Alex, which of course Alex takes as over dramatic lies, setting up a great roadside confrontation.
Not in this world or the next by @hannah-writes
AO3 author page
Tears, tears, tears raining down for Mikey Evans, the parallel universe doppelgänger of our Michael Guerin who switches places, only to find that his love, Alex Manes, is ALIVE in this reality. Th is story is SO GOOD. I remember cheering every time there was an update, ha.
Here I am fallen by @ninswhimsy
AO3 Author Page
Ohhhhh man. I have raved and raved about this one, and I’m prepared to do it again. Michael saves Alex here, body and soul. It’s a Crusades AU that is just so lovely, cutting through Alex’s religious shame with Michael’s earnest desire to love him in every way. Gorgeously written.
Everywhere on earth you go by @leescoresbies
AO3 Author page
This is a standout AU, in my opinion. Alex is a folk singer who fled Roswell after high school. Against his better judgment, he plays a show in New Mexico, and who do you think he runs into? This is perfectly written, with such vivid, descriptions and characterizations. The post-coital fight is one of the most memorable passages I’ve ever read in the RNM fandom.
And the sun rose red and Fleetwood Mac ain’t got nothin on us by @christchex
AO3 author page
Two great and VERY different AUs. The first is a beautifully written Western featuring Miluca. The second is a cleverly structured story about high school rumors and the impact they have on Michael and Alex.
let me count the ways, you can’t fight the hurricane, put me to work by @queersirius
AO3 Author page
Millie writes SUCH good AUs!!! There’s a Pacific Rim AU, an AU set in an office (with one of the hottest, smuttiest scenes in the fandom), and a high school AU featuring the most perfect teenage Alex that has 100% inspired my writing of him. Can’t go wrong with any of these.
Freaky Friday by @iwontbeyourmedicine
AO3 author page
I have a soft spot for this one because it was my inspiration for the fic exchange back in January. This one has such a great premise - what if Alex, Liz, and Maria were the aliens? It’s angsty and great.
Where they hang the lights by @leescoresbies
AO3 author page
My favorite space-set fic in the fandom. The antigravity scene is so beautiful, and it’s got a great plot. Love this one.
To Trust Love @laughsalot3412
AO3 Author Page
This is getting mentioned tomorrow in angst, too, FYI. Oof, the plot of this - the aliens are in Caulfield. Alex is a guard. This fic could have gone so wrong in so many ways, but the subject matter was so sensitively handled, and Alex is so so good and trying so hard. One of my favorite stories in the whole fandom for sure. As this was posting live, I must have reread each chapter like eight times, ha.
my love is a life taker by @jocarthage
AO3 Author page
Trust me, this is getting its own separate post as soon as I get a chance to finish it! But it is also one of my tippity top favorite AUs. On its surface, it’s a time travel AU (so well done), but it is also SO much more than that
#rnmcreate2020#AUs#AUs galore!#i love AUs#and these are all so good#malex#roswell nm#fic recommendation
