So I watched the 12th episode of UWMA last night, the one with the Buddhist ceremony at the beginning, and it made me wonder how religion tends to get represented in BLs. Are characters shown practicing it? Is there a variety of religions represented? Are atheists allowed to exist in BL? Does it ever cause a conflict?
Oh what an interesting ask. I don't chronicle religious elements on my magic spreadsheet, so this it's gonna be pulling from memory.
Tumblr media
ALT
Religious representation, setting, and narrative devices in Thai BL
First, quickly, THE ASKS:
Are characters shown practicing it?
Yes, in my experience mostly Buddhist morning blessings (LBC), wedding rituals (SOTUS S), hope & wish rituals, and some funerals (UWMA). Also Type becomes a monk in TharnType 2.
Tumblr media
ALT
Is there a variety of religions represented?
Mostly what I can recall is Buddhist, but I've seen a few crosses round necks, weddings seem somewhat egalitarian, and I think I'm forgetting some.
According to most online sources, 85-95% of the population of Thailand is Theravada Buddhist. 5-10% Muslim. Less than 5% of the population includes animists, Christians, Confucians, Hindus, Jews, Sikhs, and Taoists. There is no official state religion in the Thai constitution, which guarantees religious freedom for all Thai citizens, though the king is required by law to be a Theravada Buddhist.
You'll hear characters using satu often.
However Christmas is definitely a Thing in Thailand (if only an excuse to decorate) it shows up in UWMA, Ingredients, and Love Area among others.
Tumblr media
ALT
Are atheists allowed to exist in BL?
I don't know, not explicitly stated as such in my experience so far. But I don't think they'd be pillorized, at least not in Thai stuff. As an atheist myself, I'd probably notice.
Does it ever cause a conflict?
I should note that belief in ghosts, occultism, psychics, oracles astrology (not just stars but birth years, birth day of week, blood type and more) and other cultural superstitions are pretty common. Y-Destiny highlights a number of these.
Tumblr media
BL Outside of Thailand
The Boy Foretold by Stars is a 2020 Pinoy BL with excellent queer rep set in a VERY catholic high school. Religious setting and characters are key to the story. Other stuff out of the Philippines often contains casual Catholicism.
Korea, there seemed to be something swimming around Peach of Time, the BL side plot in Run On features a homophobic mother who implied Christian, (and they do use conflict around religion for elements in Kdramas, see Hospital Playlist.)
I haven't noticed any in BL out of Vietnam, Taiwan, or Japan.
Tumblr media
ALT
BL with Religious Representation
Just Friends? (Korea) - mother goes to church
The Fairy Fox (China) - sorta plays with Chinese mythos
Love By Chance (Thai) - when Ae goes home
Mood Indigo - Pornographer series (Japan) - fetishized funeral, don’t ask
Goodbye Mother AKA Thua Me Con D (Vientam) - family home life is religious
Until We Meet Again (Thai) - reincarnation, Buddhist temple visits and offerings, Thai mythology, and also Christmas
He's Coming to Me (Thai) - ghost, gravesite location, temple visits, I learned A LOT bout Buddhist funeral and death practices
My Tee (Thai) - blessing ceremony
So Much in Love (Thai) - ghost, occult, superstitious beliefs
TharnType 2 (Thai) - male coming of age ritual within Buddhism
The Boy Foretold by the Stars (Pinoy) - Catholicism & psychic practices
My Day (Pinoy) - both Ace and Sky’s mom pray in chapel
Ingredients (Thai) - Christmas
Tonhon Chonlatee (Thai) - prayer/wishing tree
A Tale of Thousand Stars - rural northern beliefs and village practices including welcoming/departure ceremonies and weddings
Y-Destiny (Thai) - ghost, mourning rituals
Hometown's Embrace (Thai) - local shrine and home votive offerings
Love Area (Thai) -  Christmas
Siew Sum Noi (Thai) - northern temple and home shrine practices
Top Secret Together (Thai) - mourning rituals
Peach of Time (Korea) - death practices and mourning rituals
Bite Me (Thai) - northern temple visits, legends and mythos
My Ride (Thai) - wish upon the floating flower candle, blessing, hope
Gen Y 1 & 2 (Thai) - offerings, wishing tree, prayer tree, temple visit
Something in My Room (Thai) - ghosts and household spirits, occultism, exorcism, psychic abilities
What Zabb Man - side couple visits a Buddhist temple
Cupid’s Last Wish - I hated this show but it has a lot of religious stuff in it
Of these I would say Until We Meet Again, He’s Coming to Me, TharnType 2, and The Boy Foretold by Stars have the most significant plot points and narratives around religion (rather than just using it for character depth and set dressing).
Okay, now what’s I forget?

Jungkook straightens his back. The resolve on his face settles into a firm decision. He takes a long swing from his soju, emptying the bottle, and turns towards you.
"How do you suggest I go about doing that, then?"
"How do you mean?"
"You're a girl. How would you want someone to tell you that they were into you?"
"What, do you think every girl likes being asked out the same way?" At his dumbfounded expression, you scoff. "Aish, I don't speak 'girl,' Bunny. You know her. What would she like?" You tap the side of his head with your knuckles. "Use that brain."
Jungkook rolls his eyes, shoves your hand away, and replies, "Just humor me, would you? Give me some ideas."
Unable to ignore his insistence, you huff out a breath and tilt your head slightly. "Well...if you're scared of face-to-face, maybe try over the phone?"
"Like a text?"
You shake your head vigorously, an unintended groan slipping out. "What? No, that's the worst idea ever! I was thinking more phone call confession. Those are cute."
A tiny smirk tugs on the corners of Jungkook's lips, and the sides of his eyes crinkle as you speak. "That's a kdrama cliche if I've ever heard one."
You grab one of the throw pillows and hold it up, eyes narrowing at your target. "Say it again, I dare you."
The brunet raises his hands in defense. "I didn't say it wasn't cute!"
"You wanted ideas, you get ideas." Lowering the throw pillow, you hold it to your chest and turn your eyes from his. "Don't take my word for it. Would she like that?"
"Maybe...it's worth a try, honestly."
"That's really not a great way to answer that, Kookie." Turning around so that you're sitting cross-legged in front of your companion, you place the pillow in your lap and gesture towards him. "So, if you wanna call her, now you need to decide when."
His eyes widen a bit, and a pink tint covers his cheeks. "After the Lunar New Year, maybe?"
"Why not now? Everyone's in a celebratory mood. Everyone's happy. This is the best damn time, and besides, you got me—your loyal wing-woman—here to help you."
Jungkook rolls his eyes. "You're not seriously suggesting—"
"—Call her," you interrupt. "Right now."
The brunet's expression shifts from surprise to horror. "We don't even have service thanks to the storm!"
Pulling your cell from your pocket, you show your companion the three bars with a smug smile. "Storm's passed, Bunny. Call her."
"No way."
You grip the edge of the pillow and lean forward "Why not! I helped you ask out that girl in tenth grade. You were a chicken then, like, even more so than now. I can guide you through this."
Your best friend shakes his head as he pulls himself to his feet. Shuffling away from you, back towards the makeshift kitchen in front of the bakery, he replies, "Not gonna happen, [Y/n]."
You pick yourself off the ground and follow him. "Seriously, though. Why not? How long have you been wanting to ask this girl out? A while, yeah? Take it from me: waiting only makes it harder."
Jungkook begins to clean up the makeshift kitchen, keeping his hands busy on that task and he murmurs a soft reply. "I'd rather do it on my own time. Nothing against you, I just..."
Seeing his obvious discomfort, and realizing that he's not going to change his mind, you relent and let your next argument fall away. You grab a reusable grocery bag from the shelf by the registers and return to help him put things away. Jungkook's gaze flickers up to yours, clearly taken back by your silence.
"That's it?" he asks. "You're not going to push it anymore?"
"No, no," you reply, giving a dismissive wave of your hand. "You wanna do it on your own time, that's okay. I won't force you."
"Then why do you sound so salty about it?"
Tilting your head to the side, you blow a piece of hair out of your eyes. "'Cause I'm always salty?"
Jungkook snickers at your retort, showing his agreement through his lack of comeback.
The following minutes of cleanup are silent. The two of you enjoy each other's company as you put the ingredients into the bag, clean the cooking equipment and pans, and fix the mess around the cooking area. As you retrieve the dishes from the cubby area in front of the window, Jungkook counts out the amount of money owed to the store. Plus an extra tip to account for the mess and disturbance for the evening. You've known the owner for some time, and you highly doubt he'd mind given the circumstances, but seeing Jungkook go out of his way to make things right gives you a sense of pride.
And the little whisper of curiosity perks up again at the thought of who he might be pining after. It had better be someone worthy of him. You're protective of all your friends, but none more than your best friend. It twists your stomach in knots to think about him going through another heartbreak.
But what if this girl really is the one for him? You've never known him to be secretive. If she means this much to him, and he's too shy to talk about her, she's worth asking about.
Again.
You slip behind him at the register, standing up on your tip-toes to whisper, "Although, if you had asked her out already, you'd be at her apartment getting some right now instead of freezing your ass off here with me—"
The brunet groans loudly, caught off-guard by your sudden appearance, and tosses the bills onto the counter. "—Fucking knew you wouldn't let it go."
"I'm just sayin'! Year of the Rabbit could've started off with a bang for the Gym Bunny."
He turns on his heel, staring you down with an unamused expression and cocked eyebrow. "You realize I'm not even born the Year of the Rabbit, right? I'm Year of the Ox."
With a wave of your hand, you reply, "Ox, Rabbit, whatever. It's not even good luck for your birth year, anyway. Be glad it's not the Year of the Ox."
"At least I'm not Year of the Tiger, like you."
"Which explains my shitty year last year," you snide, referencing the prior year in the Chinese zodiac cycle. "Well, what's your girlfriend's zodiac then?"
Jungkook runs a hand through his dark, unruly locks as he turns his back to you. "Um...Rabbit."
"Oof, then maybe don't call her."
He moves across the room, scoops up the blanket from the flower shop, and shakes the crumbs of food from the interior. Eyes still averting yours, he returns, blanket in hand. Draping the scarlet fabric across your shoulders, you fall silent. All sarcasm and teasing instantly fades at the closeness. The gesture silences you; tattooed fingers are gentle and warm as they tighten the throw around you, brushing against your exposed neck.
"Wh—What was that for?" you murmur, voice suddenly softer in the neon light of the bakery.
Jungkook grins, and your heart drops into your stomach when his dimples take center-stage. "You looked cold."
"Oh...really? I feel fine."
A single inked finger caresses your cheek, leaving a trail of tingles and warmth in its wake. "Your cheeks are rosy." His voice is even quieter than yours, and for a brief moment, his gaze locks with yours.
Swallowing dryly, you cup your cheeks between your palms. "I feel warm."
He chuckles, "That's probably the soju, Flower Child."
You narrow your eyes as you stare up at him, keeping your vermilion cheeks covered. "You're trying to distract me, aren't you." It's more of an accusation than a question.”
Jungkook sighs heavily, dropping his hands from the blanket's periphery. "You're really not gonna let this go, are you?"
"I'm just curious!" you exclaim, shaking yourself out of the stupor caused by his closeness. "Who's lucky enough to grab your attention?"
His eyes close for a brief moment. In the silence, you feel the heaviness return to the conversation. The air is uncomfortable, and you find yourself shuffling in place.
"After the holiday," he breathes, letting his attention move to the tile flooring below. "Maybe...Maybe—"
The sound of explosions and the sight of scarlet flares raining from the sky cuts his sentence off. You jump slightly, instinctively moving closer to him. Jungkook's hand reaches for yours, and when you glance up at him, you see his eyes glued to the windows that line the front of the supermarket.
When it happens a second time, he drags you towards the front, moving slow and cautious. The scarlet lights rain down from the sky again, and from your spot against the glass, you see the aftermath of multicolored firework displays.
Once you realize what the origin of the explosion is, a grin spreads across your face. Your fingers lace with Jungkook's, and you tug him towards the supply closet from where you came hours prior.
"C'mon!" you cheer. "The snow's stopped, and we gotta get a better view."
"Where?" your best friend inquires, though he allows you to tug him along behind you.
"The roof! Follow me, I think I can get to it from the attic!"
The Busan native follows you without question. Your hand in his, the pair of you trek across the supermarket, into the supplies closet, and back up the ladder into the attic space. You recall Yoongi telling you at one point that there was an entrance to the roof somewhere inside.
Upon entering the connecting space above the stores, you're met with the familiar chill and darkness. Jungkook utilizes the flashlight on his cellphone without you having to ask. Trudging along, you find the entrance to the roof in less than a minute. The door is small and hardly recognizable but thankfully unlocked.
Pushing through, you and your companion land on a long rooftop that gives a gorgeous view of downtown Seoul. The snow has stopped falling, and the storm has moved on in the direction of the Yellow Sea. Every rooftop, every building, every street is covered in white. But slowly, as if Itaewon-dong is awakening after a winter slumber, lights reappear. Flares, lanterns, fireworks: the city comes to life before your eyes. Hues of gold and scarlet contrast beautifully against the porcelain.
Another firework bounds into the air, originating from the hill near Namsan Tower. You tug on Jungkook's hand, nodding towards the edge of the building. "C'mon, let's get a closer look."
Leaning against the edge of the building, arms propped against the railing, you turn your gaze upwards as a third round of fireworks shower the sky with warm colors. Jungkook stands beside you, hand still over yours on the brick ledge. The temperature is still around freezing, but you hardly mind. But you have a sweatshirt and blanket wrapped around you, and your concern shifts to your best friend.
"Are you cold?" you ask, looking over at him.
His breath comes out in vague clouds, but he's smiling as he shakes his head. "Nope."
"Are you lying?"
"Maybe..."
With a playful roll of your eyes, you shrug the blanket from your shoulders and drape it over him, covering his head and shoulders with ease. Jungkook tries to push it back into your grasp, but you give him a scowl and state, "Don't give me that, Gym Bunny. I have a sweatshirt. All you have is that jacket, and it's hardly meant for snow. I'm perfectly warm—"
To your surprise, Jungkook grabs the edges of the blanket in both hands, moves to stand behind you, and wraps his arms around your middle. The blanket acts as a cocoon of body heat as he sets his chin on your shoulder and pulls you back into him. "How about this, then?"
Stammering over your words, you try to hide your blush by turning back to focus on the fireworks. "Yeah, that works, I guess."
You can feel him smirking against your shoulder as Jungkook takes your affirmation as a signal to relax against you. He's fully aware at how his back-hugs shut you up, and he's completely willing to use them to his advantage.
"Happy New Year, [Y/n]," he murmurs after a few minutes of silence.
Tugging the blanket tighter around you both, a small smile slips onto your face. You've never been one to believe in Lunar New Year miracles, the ones your grandmother told you about when you were small, but with Jungkook this close to you, you can't help but stand in awe and wonder at the butterflies in your stomach.
"For what it's worth, you don't have to tell me anything," you add, trying to hide the tender and sensitive heart you're nurturing. "I know you'll share when you're ready, and I hope you didn't feel like I was pressuring you."
Jungkook shakes his head, chin brushing against your sweatshirt. "I never thought that."
"Oh? Good..." You heave a sigh. "Must be some girl."
"She is," he admits. "And it's not that I don't want to tell you. I just..."
Shaking your head, you reach your hand up and back to pat the top of his head without turning around. "You don't have to say anything. Let's...Let's just watch the fireworks, yeah?"
Jungkook doesn't respond verbally, but the way his arms tighten around your center lets you know he's heard you.
"Happy New Year, Jungkookie."
In that moment, under the fireworks, you conclude that it doesn't matter who this girl is. As long as you have him in your life—no matter the role—you're content. You can live with being best friends if it means he's happy. That means more to you than the feelings you push down, and you'll always put his joy above yours.
Because if there's one thing that Jungkook has always been, it's your closest friend, your partner in crime, your one constant thing. Ever since you two met, he's always been bunny smiles, shining eyes, and pure of heart. He's always been there, at the edge of your vision, peripheral and steadfast—like the fireworks exploding in the corners of your eyes.

a matter of time till the flowers bloom
title: a matter of time till the flowers bloom fandom: Secret Garden (2010) Korean Drama pairing: Kim Joo-Won/Gil Ra-Im notes: Because of all of the hype surrounding Hyun Bin lately it made me want to re-watch my favorite kdrama and I just had to write a fic for it even if it's not likely anyone will read it
summary: they meet thirteen years earlier than planned but nothing much has changed. Kim Joo-Won still finds himself smitten with Gil Ra-Im. the time may change, but that stays the same.
or the AU where Gil Ra-Im’s father had lived and he introduces Kim Joo-Won to his daughter like he promised.
When we get out of here, I’ll introduce you to my Ra-Im. She’s so pretty that you’ll faint.
It’s not hard for Joo-Won to request that the firefighter that saved him be treated in the same high-class hospital room as him without the latter knowing. After all, it’s the least he could do.
He’s still being treated for his ankle with Ahjussi – Gil Ik-seon, he later tells him – right beside him, when the hospital doors burst open and a high school girl with a tear streaked face, all but tackles the firefighter he owes his life to.
Ah, this must be the daughter he’s already heard so much about.
He should be more sensitive to her plight. After all, she was a turn of fate away from losing her father, and with that thought, Joo-Won is back in that moment looking at Mr. Gil Ik-seon in that cramped elevator and thinking he’d see someone die in front of him without being able to do anything about it.
But all that comes out of his mouth is –
“Ah, ah, what’s this Ahjussi? You said your daughter would be so pretty that I’d faint. All I can see is an ugly face that’s even uglier when it cries.”
He really doesn’t know why he’s insulting his savior’s daughter, only that he can’t stand to see her cry.
For what it’s worth, it works, because although there are still tear tracks on her face, she glares at him with so much fire in her eyes.
The machines in the hospital must be faulty because he’s suddenly finding it hard to breathe.
She comes by often – Gil Ra-Im, after her death stare her father had introduced them– a cheerful ‘Appa, I’m here!’ to her dad, and more glares for him.
He has too much respect for Mr. Gil Ik-seon but he can’t help wanting to rile up his daughter, and he doesn’t even know the reason why.
One day she comes by with home made food and out of the corner of his eye, he sees Secretary Kang bring in the high-class hospital food from near the doorway. He shooes the man away with his eyes when she’s not looking and whines about not having food.
“What, none for me? I’m a sick man you know. Shouldn’t you be feeding me?”
“Are you really too poor that you can’t even afford your own meals?” is her tart response.
“What?!” If only she knew who he was…”You can’t treat me that way. If only you knew who I was, later on you’d say ‘Oh I was actually in the same room as that guy!’, that’s what you’d say.”
“Now, now Ra-Im, let’s share some of our food. Don’t deprive me of the chance to boast about my daughter’s cooking!”
She’s disgruntled but follows her father’s orders. He pretends he can’t even lift his arms and opens up his mouth.
 “Ahhh…”
“You’re crazy if you think I’ll feed you! Do you want your fifth vertebrae to become your sixth!?”
“What? You can’t be violent against a sick person.”
 “Now, now, Ra-Im…”
She eventually does it, hand-feeding him, but it would have been better without that disgusted look on her face. Now, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Joo-Won has eaten from five star restaurants, dishes prepared with the finest ingredients and the most skilled of chefs, and yet this meal prepared by this ordinary girl, there’s no other word for it. It’s –
 “Delicious.”
She looks skeptical at first, but he keeps his face serious, and then he’s rewarded with the most brilliant smile.
“Really? It’s really delicious?” She giggles for once looking like the high school girl she is, and with her sparkling eyes, he can finally see what Ahjussi meant.
For once in his twenty-one years of existence, he’s struck dumb.
He drives them both home personally – waving off Secretary Kang’s concerns that his ankle wasn’t well enough and that his mother would kill him for letting him drive in his condition, but that’s Secretary Kang’s problem, not his. He drives them both to a run-down place, the kind you see on the background of one of those National Geographic documentaries, and he thinks this isn’t right.
Shouldn’t someone have been by to compensate the Gil family already? He thinks, even a new house wouldn’t be enough.
They invite him in and though he doesn’t even know anyone personally who rents, he can’t find it in himself to say no.
He remedies it the next day, presenting new appliances – vacuum cleaner, washing machine, flat screen TV, the works – on their doorstep with a flourish. They’re all from grandfather’s department store so it wasn’t much.
By their astounded faces, he can tell he’s shocked them; yes this is who he really is – scion and future CEO of Loel Department Store – not some mooching patient.
Discreetly, he looks at Gil Ra-Im’s face, but his satisfaction is short-lived as her surprise turns to consternation.
Ahjussi speaks first. “Joo-Won…We appreciate the gesture, we really do, but I didn’t save your life so I could get all of this.”
He knows this, and he knows whatever he’s giving them doesn’t even compare.
Later on, even Ra-Im pulls him aside.
“For Appa, whether you’re some bigshot son of a wealthy family or even if you were some homeless man with tacky tastes in track suits (‘Listen you…!’), a life is a life that’s precious. And also he told me what happened. He said you saved him and that you wouldn’t let go. I should thank you for that. Kamsahamnida!”
She bows formally and Joo-Won is a confused mess of emotions. What is she acting all shy for now after hitting him constantly for his annoying comments in the hospital? It leaves him giddy seeing her act cute, but also apprehensive because it seems like they’re distant strangers.
Why must the Gil family be so hard to thank?
“Well if there’s one thing you could do for me. I was wanting to watch my daughter’s Taekwondo match. Would you want to come with me?”
If playing chauffeur is the only thanks they’ll accept, then Joo-Won will take what he can get.
Gil Ra-Im is a marvel of motion and deathly grace. She brings down men twice her size with ease. Sweat flows off her brow with every kick and strike.
Joo-Won can’t even blink. It looks like she’s sparkling. He is fascinated, enraptured, captivated.
“That’s my daughter,” says Ahjussi with pride.
She must be a health hazard and no one told him. Why else does she make it so hard for him to breathe? At this rate, he really will faint.
“Hey Ji-Hyun, what does it mean that I can’t take my eyes off of someone who could probably break every bone in my body? You know me I prefer the intellectual type. And what does it mean that I actually look forward to when she hits me?”
“Wow, we haven’t even broken up for more than four months and here you go talking about another girl in front of me.”
“You’re the one who dumped me.” Joo-Won points out helpfully.
‘It’s not as if you look that broken up about it’ Ji-Hyun thinks, but doesn’t say. “We’re better off as friends.”
“Anyway, if I thought you actually had the capacity for it, I’d think you were in love.”
 Joo-Won snorts in disbelief.
He offers to drive her to her school since it’s on the way to his University. He opens the door and tells her to get in.
“Are you really crazy? What would people think if I was driven to school in a sports car. No thanks. I’ll ride the bus.”
“Most high school girls would go ‘kyaaa’ at this rare opportunity, You’d be the envy of everyone, having a handsome university student like me drive you to school. “
At that, she just rolls her eyes, leaves him gaping as she gets on the bus.
The one time she agrees because she was running late, she demands to drive, and again Joo-Won doesn’t know what compels him to entrust his precious car’s keys to her, but it’s one experience he never wants to relieve again.
 Ever.
With the pretext of paying back his debt, he visits them often, Ahjussi and Gil Ra-Im
“I’m very exacting about these things.”
Ra-Im rarely accepts getting driven to places and forget about handing Ahjussi any money. Instead he pays for when they go out to eat rinds, much to his disgust.
“Don’t melt it. Chew it and swallow like a man.”
Funnily enough, it’s Gil Ra-Im who constantly says that while Ahjussi just laughs at him.
He wonders how many rind sessions it’ll be but they pay for the meals as many times as he does, not to mention he always has a place at their table whenever he drops by for dinner. At this rate, paying the debt is slow-going, but Joo-Won finds he doesn’t mind.
One night, he doesn’t realize how much time has passed and how many soju they’d consumed. Maybe it’s not his place to say but –
“Ahjussi, should Ra-Im really be drinking?”
Ra-Im scowls at him as expected but Ahjussi just laughs good-naturedly. “It’s medicinal, don’t worry.”
Joo-Won raises an eyebrow at that but lets it go, long ago accepting that he’ll never understand the workings of the Gil family.
It’s really late and he’s drunk, so Ahjussi doesn’t let him go home and offers him a place to sleep in their living room. Again, Joo-Won has only slept on silk sheets and down pillows imported from Europe, but he still accepts the offer.
“Wait for a bit, I’ll just bring Ra-Im to her room.”
“Don’t worry Ahjussi, let me do it.” Joo-Won picks her up easily, and for all of her tough talk, she weighs as light as a feather. He places her on her bed and places her stuffed toys near her. If he’s staring at her for a bit too long, well that’s just because he’s drunk. There’s a furrow in her eyebrow that makes his own furrow so he eases it away with his finger until her face rests peacefully again.
A soft smile touches his own features though he doesn’t notice it.
 “Sweet dreams, Ra-Im.”
Joo-won’s body is in a jacuzzi pool in Deoksan but his mind is in a run-down apartment in Seoul. In his mouth is the taste of caviar, but he can’t help but wish for the taste of home-made tteokbokki. Physically he is present, laughing while being surrounded by pretty girls near his ideal sizes, but in his mind he can’t help but criticize.
Her skin is too smooth and fair. A bit darker would be nice.
Her hair is too long, a bob cut would be more chic.
Her legs are too thin. It’d be better if she had more muscle.
One of the said pretty girls caresses his arm. “Isn’t this fun, Joo-Won?” Her eyes don’t sparkle.
Joo-Won thinks of arguing over rinds, watching some late night drama, a hand on his shoulder and a curt but sweet voice, as they both tell him to take care in going home and drive safely.
The girl is waiting for a response. He smiles blankly. “Yeah, it’s fun.”
Choi Woo-young has been a thorn at his side at worst and an annoying Hyung at best. But never before has he had this visceral feeling of wanting to bury him where he could never be found. Until now.
“A fan you say? Why, my dongsae should’ve have introduced us sooner so I would’ve found out I had such a charming fan!”
“Never on your life,” mutters Joo-Won under his breath.
In the first place, they only found themselves in this situation because Woo-young was following him.
“I was only worried about you!”
“You’ll be hearing from my lawyer.”
He never wanted for them to meet anyway, but to make matters worse Gil Ra-Im is apparently a fan of ‘Oska’.
This is the first time he’s seen her this way. Ra-Im has stars in her eyes and is honestly twirling her hair and popping her foot like in a classic Hollywood movie. It’s sickening. If there’s anyone who should see her like that, it should only be him.
 “Can I call you Oppa?”
 “Of course!”
“Hyung, if you don’t leave in three seconds, I’ll leak to the media outlets some very interesting photos I have. An artist just beginning his music career wouldn’t want that kind of scandal right?”
 “You’re a demon.”
 “2 seconds.”
After he’s finally, finally, left, Joo-Won doesn’t waste time. He whirls on Ra-Im, face livid.
“Oppa?! I should be the one. You should be calling me, Joo-Won Oppa!” He knows he sounds childish, but he doesn’t care.
“Never.” She has the gall to stick out her tongue at him. No, no way. She had no right to act this cute after what she just pulled.
Later after Choi Woo-young gets to know Ra-Im better - much to Joo-Won’s frustration- he pulls him aside to talk to him.
For once Joo-Won actually listens because his Hyung never sounds this serious.
“I wasn’t joking when I said I was worried. Your friends say you haven’t been around much lately. What kind of healthy twenty-one year old doesn’t go to parties? You should be having the best time of your life. Is it the accident? Are there still some side-effects?”
Joo-Won waves off his Hyung’s concerns. “I’m fine. There’s no need to make a fuss.”
“Well it looks like it. You seem happier and more, I don’t know if peaceful is the word. So, where have you been lately?”
“You know that fireman who saved me? The girl you met, Gil Ra-Im, that’s his daughter. I’ve just been visiting them.”
“So I’ve heard. Whenever we meet, Miss Ra-Im is always complaining about you sticking around. She’s said it’s like they’ve adopted a stray dog or something.” He laughs boisterously. What Woo-young doesn’t tell Joo-Won though is how Miss Ra-Im looked when she said it, contented, with a secret smile on her face. His Dongsae’s head doesn’t need to get bigger than it is.
 Predictably, Joo-Won fumes, “That brat…!”
“So does that mean you? And her?” Woo-young leaves it open-ended, free for Joo-Won to interpret however he sees fit.
“What are you talking about Hyung?” He laughs, but it only sounds fake to Woo-young’s ears. “I’m just playing around with her.”
“I’ll tell on you!” He can’t believe what he’s hearing.
“Go ahead. It won’t make a difference to her.”
For all that this is nothing new for Joo-Won, careless as he is with other people’s feelings, Woo-young wouldn’t be so worried if this was a ‘playing around’ that he recognized.
When Joo-Won played around, it involved candle lit dinners and expensive dates. Woo-young doesn’t recognize this playing around that involves him visiting a girl and her father, and having meals with them. Woo-young sincerely wonders if Joo-Won even recognizes the painful domesticity of it.
As a Hyung, he can’t help but worry.
Ahjussi texts him to ask for a favor, probably the only one he has ever asked of him.
Ah-young is out on a trip so could he stay with Ra-Im for tonight since it looks like he’ll be late in coming home. (He’s met Ah-young, Ra-Im’s best friend once before. She exclaimed ‘omo, omo’ and shook Ra-Im’s shoulder excitedly when they’d met. That is how girls react when meeting him. Ra-Im is just a strange and fascinating anomaly.)
He was expecting a scowl to greet him when she opened the door. He’d actually revel in it. Instead what he gets is a split second where her face falls when she realizes it isn’t her dad at the door. That hurt more.
She tries to keep herself together, pretending everything is normal, throwing insults his way, and yet preparing his meal for him. But Joo-Won can see right through her. He’ll take angry Ra-Im, annoyed Ra-Im, a fawning Ra-Im any day over this withdrawn and scared girl. It reminds him of when they first met.
He plays along with the motions. He says something that makes her throw a punch, an insult no doubt, but he misses his cue, because instead of avoiding it, as he would’ve done, he catches it, and pulls her in for a tight hug.
She struggles, though even that is weak.
“I understand that you’re worried.” He whispers it on her hair, and hugs her tighter. She stops trying to escape. “I’m worried too. But I’m here. You’re not alone. We’ll wait for him together.”
How can he explain to her? That moment that he saw in her father’s eyes that he was willing to let go because he would be dragging Joo-Won down with him. It was just a flip of a chance, but there could’ve been a world where Ra-Im was without a father and it’d all be his fault. So though he doesn’t understand this obnoxious, infuriating, astounding, precious girl half the time, he can confidently say, he understands what she’s going through right at this moment.
Miracle of miracles, she hugs him back, tight as he is hugging her.
 It slips out.
“I love you with all my heart.”
 She stills.
“Your father wanted me to pass his words on to you.”
 And relaxes.
Meanwhile, Joo-Won is the opposite. Because those may have been her father’s words, but the emotion behind it is all his.
They don’t eat dinner yet. Knees drawn, her fisted hand enclosed in his, and his thumb running soothing circles over it, they wait together.
They wait together, and pray for rain.
Would your father have liked me?
Definitely not. What kind of father would like a guy who always looks down on his daughter and makes her cry.
Gil Ik-seon likes Kim Joo-Won. The boy has good intentions even if he goes the wrong way about it. He’s insistent on thanking him and standing by his principles no matter what those principles may be.
But more importantly, he likes Kim Joo-Won because he loves Ra-Im. The most precious thing in the world to Gil Ik-seon is his daughter. And because Ra-Im is the most precious to him, he likes Kim Joo-Won.
For all of Ra-Im’s scathing words against him, Kim Joo-Won makes it so her sad eyes aren’t so sad anymore, even if as a result they become angry instead.
But often she’ll also ask, “Is moron coming by over today Appa? I need to know if I need to make extra servings.” She says it as if it was too troublesome to do so, but he still catches her small smile whenever Joo-Won drops by.
So Gil Ik-Seon likes Kim Jo-Woon, and he’s sure Ra-Im likes him too.

The Face Shop: Clean Face Acne Solution Line.
Tumblr media
Annyeong haseyo! Battling acne is battling trouble everyday huhu. It’s so hard to be born with acne-prone oily skin. Especially if you live in a hot humid climate like the Philippines. You have to be extra careful with the products you use cause one wrong product could trigger not just one breakout but a whole face of trouble. Arggh!!! It’s a good thing if you find a compatible skin care line. Remember when I used to use the Maxi Peel line? It was going so great but then after a few months my skin got prone to it so it didn’t work wonders like it used to. Lucky for me I’ve found a replacement! Probably probably go switching these lines up to keep skin clear.
Tumblr media

This cleanser is the bomb! It’s so refreshing and you get such a cleansed feeling afterwards. It foams up really well too! Thick and so nice! This is a fave of mine. The product is not heavy on the skin and is just so nice to put on. It’s so liquid and fluid that my oily skin skin loves it so much. It gets absorbed by the skin so nicely and it gives just the right amount of moisture and oil control that my skin really feels balanced. Moist and not oily at all.

This is the best BB Cream if you’re looking for something to control oiliness!!! Omo this product is such a dream!
Tumblr media
The real downside of this is that it only has one shade. And that shade is soooooo light.
Tumblr media
So I apply this all over my face lightly as a base. It makes makeup stay on longer and controls oil so wonderfully! It’s also good to be used even when working out cause it keeps skin looking and feeling fresh as it controls oil so wonderfully! Plus it’s non-irritating on the skin.

Tumblr media
Without shaking the solution, dip a clean cotton swab into the container and apply directly to blemishes. This one makes acne dry up quicker than the normal rate and it also calms those pimple bumps until they flatten. Since I use it so often 1 bottle only lasts me a month haha that’s with every night usage.
Tumblr media
Currently loving this whole line (I think I have everything from this line! OMO But I will put the other night and morning spot correctors in a separate post). If you’re looking for an anti-trouble line that does not feel like you’re torturing your skin then the Clean Face line is perrrrfect! It gives nourishment to acne-oily prone skin and I really feel it working.
The price is just right too! A product ranges around 600 pesos so that’s a steal! Also I have not experienced terrible counter effects from using these. Daebak! All goodness from this line.
Erika’s Weather Forecast: I don’t wanna finish Fight For My Way yet huhu it’s such an uplifting inspirational Kdrama!

Strong Woman Do Bong Soon Episode 01
Color me impressed. Don’t get me wrong, I was always going to watch this kdrama. I mean, come on! Tall and smoldering Park Hyungsik (on his first lead role) crushing on adorable, tiny badass Park Bo-young, who at the same time has a crush on hard-ass cop Ji-soo? Did the PD and writer inception-ed me? Because this sure feels like a dream come true.
Not only the leads, but also the rest of the cast is amazing. Full of promising new talents like An Woo Yeon, who we saw on last year’s Jealousy Incarnate, and then the veterans: Shim Hye-jin! Yoo Jae-myung! Kim Won-hae! Lim Won-hae! And so many more who have a rich and successful film careers.
So, yeah, this show has all the ingredients to be awesome and so far episode one is everything and more. And Strong Woman Do Bong-soon is the show I didn’t know I needed in my life.
Starting with Do Bong-soon. I love that she’s a sassy, strong willed badass, who doesn’t let her powers cripple her or make her an introvert. She doesn’t feel superior either, she’s really just trying to do her best and in the meantime earn some money to do her own thing.
I love her little family unit. Bro seems like a good person who cares for her and has her back, while Mom and Dad have a hilarious dynamic.
sidetone: do we know why Bong-soon and her brother were kidnapped when they were kids? Is it important for the story? Or is it a colorful anecdote as to how she came to realize her powers?
The story about the curse makes me think that there are rules to her power, what would it mean for her to do this new job? She’s doing something good, protecting someone, but who or what determinate when she’s doing something selfish? In contrast and comparison, it was crystal clear why her mother lost her powers.
On the other hand, CEO Min-hyuk has given us glimpses of a not so happy family life, especially in regards with his father but I love that despite being a chaebol, he’s his own man. It seems like he made his fortune by himself and even it’s a name and example among his peers, who all seem to adore him by the way they greet him when he enters the building. I love this: that our leading man is a generally good and decent person, who speaks his mind properly. (It’s almost refreshing to find a chaebol lead who isn’t in a way violent and entitled, but with a secret heart of gold. Enough!)
So, who is threatening him? A competitor? Maybe. Is there more to the story? Probably, but that’s what we need to find out. This is where Bong-soon enters.
The chemistry between Bong-soon and Min-hyuk is amazing. Full disclosure: I was already shipping them by watching the promos alone, but now that I have seen them together I love them even more. Min-hyuk is so impressed with her all the freaking time and who can blame him? While Bong-soon is yet to be impressed, even when he’s a CEO she respects because she likes his company. They have an easy banter and I just hope the show knows what is doing, so they can use this easy-going and honest chemistry well.
As for our second lead, Kook-doo, he reminds me a little of Detective Lee Jae-han from tvN’s Signal: uncompromising and honest, actively searching for the truth all the time. He even goes out of the way to help Bong-soon, which means he cares for his friends, sadly just not in the way she wishes to. Bong-soon’s crush on Kook-doo is adorable and I wonder if he truly doesn’t know about her feelings since they are pretty obvious to anyone whose watching.
BUT THERE’S A TWIST! Because not all is romance and comedy in the show, although I found myself laughing out loud more than once, there’s also a murder mystery upon us. Is it related to the threats Min-hyuk is receiving or just a way to bring our three leads together in the quest to find the truth? And who was the person following Bong-soon?
For a first episode, I think the PD and writer set the story very well and I’m really looking forward to what will happen next!
