2024 Fic Review

Well, that’s all for 2024, folks! It was certainly a wild year for me. Lots of unexpected health stuff happened and some is still ongoing, but I’m very happy to have made so much progress and lots of positive things happened besides <3 That stuff changed some of my fic plans, but I was still able to do a lot of cool fics through the year!

I published my first-ever RPFs for my favorite OutsideXbox pair!  Feels Like Mendoza Unmasked Please Do(n’t) Feed Tumblr Our secret RPF coven is now not-so-secret and it’s been so fun to chat with @cicaklah and @postalninja about Jane/Andy brain worms. I also did Yuletide for the first time and published my first-ever Oxventure Wyrdwood fic, Better Than Sheep, and that was fun to write, too! Robin is best boi and deserves all the honey in the world (or in this case, mead).

I crossed 200,000 published words this year for my AO3 count, which is pretty wonderful! With everything going on, I didn’t think I’d be able to write as much as I did, but I’m happy I had the chances to write what I could. I’m hoping to have a happier and healthier 2025 with more time to create! <3

On the other hand, he has an uncontrollable crush on the cute blond wedding planner who lives next door.

BEVERAGE BREWS

We’ve got some cozy recs on the list this week, the pumpkin spice hot chocolate is the perfect brew to set the mood. Our coven likes ours with extra whipped cream and just a sprinkle of pumpkin spice on top.

Ingredients:

3 cups whole milk 1 cup canned pumpkin puree 1 - 1 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice 1 tsp vanilla extract 4 oz white chocolate bar, chopped

To make:

-Put milk, pumpkin, spices, and vanilla into a medium cauldron (a sauce pot will work, too). -Cook over medium heat, stirring often until mixture comes to a simmer. -Turn off heat, add white chocolate and continue stirring until melted. -Carefully ladle into mugs, top with whipped cream, and more pumpkin pie spice to taste.

Oneshots:

When Life Hands You Enantiomers - Sans & Alphys friendship, pre-Undertale.  Mostly Alphys focused with EXCELLENT writing and great puns.  Alphys works on making the tile puzzle you find in Snowdin.

Keep an Eye on the Shadow’s Smile - Soriel.  My personal favorite take on how they became friends pre-Undertale.  Also very well done puns which is a necessity.  

i can move to this groove (and so can you) - Frisk POV Soriel, post-pacifist.  I’m a sucker for Frisk trying to get Soriel together lol and this one is very funny.  Bonus points for Frisk asking the rest of the cast what “romantic action” is.  Very well put together.

arabesque - Toriel-centric Soriel, with the rest of the fam there too, post-pacifist. Toriel wanted to be a ballerina when she was younger, and Sans gets her and the fam tickets to see a ballet.  Lovely original premise and great writing.

miscere - Frisk & Sans, mixed up timelines.  Judgement Hall fight where Sans thinks it’s the genocide timeline when Frisk is a pacifist.  Short, sad, and angsty in an aesthetic way.  (No permanent character death but Frisk does die and reload several times.)

Friendshipping - Sans & Alphys friendship.  “Sans finds Alphys's secret Sans/Grillby RPF. This won't get weird or awkward or anything, we're sure.” As hilarious and awkward as the summary sounds.  I just love Alphys fics a lot okay

Social Links - Sans & Alphys friendship.  Again.  PLEASE by all means if anyone has more Sans & Alphys fics send them to me.  I don’t remember as much about this fic but I trust it was good. Garbage friends forever

The Tree Fell Down; Just Plant the Apple - Frisk & Sans, Frisk & Toriel, post-pacifist, slight AU but I can’t tell you the premise without spoiling the fic lol.  I’m not usually an AU fan but this was a very heartwarming one.  Everyone (mostly Toriel) wants Frisk to see a doctor and Frisk is very against that.  

waterproof - undyne centric.  Papyrus & Undyne friendship and Alphyne so you can’t go wrong there.  Has some great backstory for her family too.  Takes place before/during/after pacifist route so there’s a bit of everything

Multichapter (complete):

A Monster Guide to Love - Soriel with Frisk wingmanning again, post-pacifist.  I’m such a sucker for this trope and this fic is laugh-out-loud hilarious, I liveblogged a good portion of it on a discord call when I first read it.

Blood of the Covenant - very long, very good, lots of everything post-pacifist.  Mostly Soriel and Frisk, a little bit of Papyton and Alphyne, PTA Sans, Monster Kid friendship, the works.  Plus Frisk is ace so there’s a special place for this fic in my heart.  (There is one noncon kiss in chapter 25 just as a warning.)

And because I’m trash here are a few of my fics:

Paved with Good Intentions - the working title of this fic was “Toriel shreds Asgore dubstep remix” so make of that what you will.  They have a talk about the fallen children after reaching the surface.

New Year, New Fashion - Papyton with a small side of Soriel.  The fam has a New Year’s Eve party at Toriel’s house.  Shenanigans ensue.  I was still getting used to writing a lot of the characters so forgive me if they’re a bit overdramatic haha

Be Good, Alright? - multichapter WIP, Frisk & Toriel and Frisk & Chara.  AU where Frisk stayed with Toriel in the Ruins.  Split between family fluff and hurt/comfort/angst.  Very short slice-of-life chapters so it’s good if you don’t have a long attention span.

I got bored and decided to rank my favorite of my published fanfics for really no reason at all. The “published” clause is only thrown in there because without it, I’d inevitably spend this entire post rambling about my (still-unfinished) fan comic. 

Way Below  Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/31102709 A Minecraft fic about the player character getting murdered by a Warden. By far my greatest weakness when it comes to writing is dialogue, so the lack of dialogue here means my greatest strength - description - can really shine. I also got to put my favorite poem (which is from a goddamn SCP, because I have no taste) into the fic, since it fits the atmosphere perfectly.  Favorite Line: “Perhaps one day you might come back to reclaim what it took, but for now you shudder at the mere mention of it. Some things, you now begin to realize, are better left in the dark where they belong.” 

Tír fo Thuinn  Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/30111645  A Song of the Sea/Secret of Kells crossover about Aisling, one of Secret of Kells’ two protagonists, leaving for Tir na nOg at the end of Song of the Sea. Once again, there’s no dialogue, so it’s solely introspection from the perspective of Aisling. I also got to show off a little of my obsession with Irish mythology, since the title comes from an alternate name of Tir na nOg, the land of the fairies/aos si.  Favorite Line: “But what was home? Was it the place you were born, the place you came from? Or was it the place you built for yourself, the place where you felt most comfortable?” 

Revolution of Night  Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/27202652/chapters/66445382 A Realicide/Fallen London crossover about Communalist teaming up with the Liberation of Night to resurrect Moralist. I mostly just like this one because it gave me the excuse to write eldritch weirdness, but like most of my multi-chapter fics, it’s got a much more complicated lore than is probably necessary, albeit one that I personally find genuinely fascinating. I can’t reveal any of it because the story’s still in progress and also spoilers, but let’s just say that Communalist is in for a rough time in this one.  Favorite Line: “They fell to their knees, brushing away the last of the dirt with their hands. Sure enough, a large box lay beneath them. It was one of those old traveling trunks, not meant for the purpose it currently served. Scratched into the lid were the words "property of Momentist not anymore! - S".” 

Blood of the Covenant  Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/32077633/chapters/79465111  A Hetalia human AU about...uh...America being autistic, getting sent as a kid to a facility that promises to “cure” him, and then ending up both traumatized and with superpowers after Canada and co. bust him out. Most of the fic follows Canada, Denmark and Netherlands trying to track him down, and writing their interactions was one of my favorite things I’ve ever written. This is one of the rare few fics where I actually like the dialogue I wrote, because most of it is very genuine and warm in comparison to most of my extremely robotic dialogue.  Favorite Line: “You text emojis like my grandmother.” 

Contamination  Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/31797211/chapters/78713449 The odd one out for being one of those fics in the grey area between fiction and RPF, due entirely to being a Hermitcraft/Dream SMP crossover. Essentially, the Egg completely corrupts the Dream SMP and moves onto Hermitcraft; Tommy attempts to warn the Hermits, gets his ass kicked, and loses his memory from a mix of physical and mental trauma, leaving the Hermits to piece together what’s going on on their own. Once again, my favorite parts are the interactions, although the characters are fun to write as well, and I’m having way too much fun writing the scenes involving the Egg, mostly because eldritch abominations are my piece of cake.  Favorite Line: “I know, but I saw his wings and thought ‘hey, Grian has wings, he can probably help’. Looking back on it, that was not my brightest moment.” 

Argonautica or: the World’s Worst Road Trip  Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/32160028/chapters/79683277  I...honestly can’t really explain this one? It’s a sequel to Hadestown where Orpheus joins the Argonauts and ends up getting into shenanigans with them. It’s just fun to write, especially any scene involving Heracles and the (currently unpublished) parts where Orpheus starts falling hard for Calais.  Favorite Line: ““There’s also the Boreads, Asclepius and our resident asshole Jason, but they’re riding in the front,” Atalanta added. “I’m not an asshole!” The same voice from before cried. “Oh, sorry, did I say asshole? I meant leader,” Atalanta corrected, although she clearly didn’t mean it.” 

A Madman’s Journal  Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/32976859  This is literally just a school assignment based on “The Monkey’s Paw” that I thought was good enough to post. We had to write about the first person to own the titular paw, so I decided to write from the perspective of the shittiest colonialist to ever live and his slow descent into madness.  Favorite Line: “This will grant three men three wishes. It will prove to you that fate is like a serpent; it does not like being touched.” 

Uncertain Embrace  Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/32160619/chapters/79685068  This one is literally just pain. Set in the aftermath of Hutt River’s dissolution, it’s basically just Seborga grieving him...and by grieving him, I mean sinking into a depression and refusing to leave his room. The second chapter follows Molossia’s attempts to get him through it and eventually the two of them falling in love.  Favorite Line: "I told you this a week ago, and I'll say it again. I'm the only person you've talked to in like a month besides your brothers, and they don't count. I get that you're grieving and there isn't shit I can do, but at least don't go through this alone. Alright?"

That’s it, that’s the fic.  Favorite Line: “We were warned, and we did not listen. Worse, some of us spat in our oracle’s face and laughed her out of Delphi while the rest of us cheered them on, or did not care enough to intervene. As we tremble on the brink of the last season of GoT, I remember seeing gifsets on tumblr during the first season, before I watched the show (I wanted to finish the book first) and being completely unable to tell the difference between Jon and Robb, which seems insane now? Why was I having that problem? It’s been a hell of a ride, kids. There were some lows but more highs (and let me tell you, this isn’t even a contender for my Worst Fandom Ever - remind me to tell y’all about the secret comms, the rigged mod elections, the RPF slash tinhatters who used someone’s wife’s mental health struggles as detailed on her old Xanga journal to tinhat her husband with another man, etc.) and it’s brought me the hilarious insanity (or insane hilarity?) of three kinkmemes, my most prolific writing, some true friends I hope to still be fannish over shows with for years to come, my coven of ladies in @alienor-woods, @justadram, @thatgirlnevershutsup, my lobster @vixleonard, and my love, my life, best of fandom wives and best of women @thefairfleming. Choices by @thing-you-do-with-that-thing - (Dean x Reader) I do not think of myself as a very emotional person; I mean I do HAVE feelings, but I don’t let them out to play very often. Kari did a phenomenal job of cracking my armor and letting those little bastards out to play. This series was a mix of heartbreak and elation, then, well, more heartbreak. It is beautifully written and worth it. 

All That Matters by @winchestersnco (Dean x Reader) This has a little bit of everything. Although this is a new fic, I found this back in my likes and reread it and I fell in love with it all over again. This will bring all your feels to the surface and is still one of the best fics I have ever read in almost two years. 

Across The Millenia by @spncovenverse - on AO3 (multiple RPF AU pairings) Kim has hit this one out of the park. I have been captivated from the very first chapter of this verse and cannot wait for more. An AU verse of two covens and their journeys.
