A character I did for a project of @seavessels :)

This devious beast is known as The Gargoyle and it's a menace. It has 2 states, the Concealment one (the one above) where it's completely immobile except for it's chains because, like a bug, it molts. And the Catharsis phase, yet to be designed, where it has full mobility until it goes back to the Concealment phase, as it's body works like molten glass in a way.

Why did seatrading societies stop using oarcarried watercrafts in favor of sailcarried watercrafts. Since there is evidence that the vikings(america) and phoenicians(to the golf of guinea) mad long distance travel with such seavessel

I'm not an expert in naval history, but my understanding is that the transition from oars to sails had less to do with ability to cross deep ocean but more to do with carrying capacity. My understanding is that sail-based ships (especially ones with multiple masts) can more easily carry more weight than oar-based ships. This has significant implications - a saii-based ship can have larger cargo holds and transport more goods than an oar-based ship, which was particularly important when sailing journeys were shifting from the relatively short haul across the Mediterranean (where you can make up for limited volume with more frequent trips) to the longer haul around the horn of Africa or across the Atlantic, where you really wanted to pack in as much spices/etc. as you could manage while still remaining afloat.

Militarily, the issue of carrying weight becomes significant when the means of naval warfare shifted from ramming and boarding to cannons. A sail-based ship could carry more and bigger cannons than an oar-based ship, which became even more important as naval ships moved from having one or two guns mounted to a hundred.
