1. What is your all time Favorite twist? ika getting to shred the letters from home for a fat check!!!! (basically i like twists that reward the houseguests but do not have a huge effect on the game itself)

2. What is a twist that you like, but kind of flopped? i did not like this twist but i just want to shit talk the teams twist i hate the teams twist so!!!! damn!!!! much!!!

3. If you were the new Grodner and had to remake the show, what would you keep the same? um the show can keep it’s name ❤️

4. What would you change? i would stop casting the machismo male archetype IMMEDIATELY. i would also make sure the cast was actually diverse, maybe one token straight white person, as a treat

7. Would you ever want to go on BB, if so, what type of player would you be? YES, omg I daydream every now and then though the reality would probably be much more different. In all honesty, I’d probably be a floater who tries to be in everyone’s good side and hope my social game is good. I’ll probably be evicted mid-jury if i’m lucky

8. Are there other CBS shows you’d want to go on, and if so, why? Survivor omg, another source of daydreams for me. I might end up getting medevaced if i do though

9. What other Reality shows do you watch? Just Survivor, BB, and RPDR honestly, though I used to watch some others like Masterchef, etc.

10. All time favorite houseguest? This is difficult so i’ll just say Da’vonne since she’s who I currently love rn

About the Show

1. What is your all time Favorite twist? I love the Ika shredding letters one and also the Loveita/Kelsey room from BBCAN (even though Kelsey came back instead of Godveita)

2. What is a twist that you like, but kind of flopped? The saboteur twist i thought was really interesting but it just didn’t pan out since miss Annie was evicted first

3. If you were the new Grodner and had to remake the show, what would you keep the same? Nothing LOL except like the general skeleton of the game probs (like HOH and vetos would still exist)

4. What would you change? Casting is probably the main one, less archetypes, more BIPOC, more LGBTs, etc. Make the show last less days also.

5. What’s your all time favorite comp? Don’t clock me but I love the knockout quiz comps like i love the whole procedure and when it pans out correctly, it leads to so much drama (see BB12)

6. What’s your all time favorite competition? In terms of a specific competition, I like the majority rules comp that Jen won

7. All time favorite punishment? Paulie’s baking punishment will never not make me LOL. Michelle’s unitard is also a classic and watching her flip out with it on was funny as well

8. If you could bring any houseguest back to be in the house (not to play the game) who would it be and why? I’m going to go with Britney or Da’vonne, they’re both really fun personalities

9. If you could bring any houseguest back to play, who would it be? Candace and Helen from BB15, as well as Dom and Kemi. All deserve a second chance in my opinion

10. What is your most memorable episode? For me, it would be the episode of Miichelle winning HOH in 10

7. Would you ever want to go on BB, if so, what type of player would you be? - I Would love to, I would try and have like a Jun Song Floater game, but new school bb hates that so...i’d be out week one

8. Are there other CBS shows you’d want to go on, and if so, why? - I would love to do the amazing race, but i’m from the UK so they won’t let me shshhs

9. What other Reality shows do you watch? - I watched The Only Way Is Essex up until 2017, I could also rewatch ANY season of Geordie Shore or BBUK

About the Show

1. What is your all time Favorite twist? - The Twin Twist, if the twins don’t tell anyone (which is sadly always going to happen) it feels so tense like sumn about two people having to act like one person is just iconic to me!

2. What is a twist that you like, but kind of flopped? - The MVP twist, In my eyes this flopped like the season, I think if they made it so you could only be the MVP once then it would have worked better in season 15, but they also could have flipped it so that the evictee picks who goes up, that would have been iconic watching everyone asking who put up the 3rd nominee, but it was actually the person they sent out the door the week before

3. If you were the new Grodner and had to remake the show, what would you keep the same? - The art team, I don’t think they get enough credit, Sure sometimes it’s a bit meh, but the den of temptation was just *chef’s kiss*

4. What would you change? Casting, that is all i have to say about that.

5. What’s your all time favorite comp? Generic answer, but OTEV is actually so iconic to me, the strategies, the fights, It also gave me one of my favourite Janelle moments ever

6. What’s your all time favorite competition? - idk if i’m being a clown, but this is basically the same as question 5 sksksk

7. All time favorite punishment? - To me all the punishments are kinda dull, like i feel like the producers do it more for comedy on the shows to shy away from the actual problematic stuff that happens every season.

8. If you could bring any houseguest back to be in the house (not to play the game) who would it be and why? - So they just like sit around and observe from inside? If I’m allowed, I’d say miss tea queen Angela Clancy from BBAU12 cause she is some good TV.

10. What is your most memorable episode? - BBCAN5, Week 5′s Eviction episode a.k.a THAT double eviction!

If you were in the BB house and you won HoH what album would be in your HoH basket and who would you want to receive a letter from? - I’m torn between LM5, Future Nostalgia, and Sweetner, In terms of letter, I’d say my best friend, I’ve known her for almost 10 years and we’ve spoken literally everyday since we met so uhhh sorry to my mother sksksks

Inktober Prompts for The Magnus Archives

I was thinking to myself “What am I going to do for Inktober this year?” and I realized my biggest fandom this year is definitely The Magnus Archives! So I made a bunch of prompts. Play along if you like, feel free to tag me (or, if you are in the official Rusty Quill Discord channel, I can see the stuff people post there).

Inktober is a tradition where artists make a piece of visual art every day using an ink medium. It's entirely just for fun. Although most of the prompts will reference drawing, it doesn't have to be limited to ink or even just to 2D illustration. Write a fanfic, create a sculpture, do digital art, doodle on a napkin, sing a song, write a poem, perform a monologue. No one can stop you!

If you don't like a prompt, try one of these: - Go to a dictionary website and take inspiration from whatever the word of the day is. - Take inspiration from a fortune cookie. - Take inspiration from another Inktober prompt (there are plenty around the Internet). - Grab a nearby book, turn to page 31, and take inspiration from a passage. - Draw/make yourself or a friend a character that would fit in the universe. - Make whatever you like!

For prompts of the form "An OC or canon character affiliated with <whatever Entity>", you can draw a character who appears in the show (canon) or an OC (original character, like from your brain!) You can draw an OC you've had for a long time, or someone you just made up. It can be someone who is haunted/cursed by a particular Entity, or someone who was chosen to be an Avatar of that Entity, or someone who just had a run-in with that Entity and gave a statement. If you have trouble coming up with an OC, I suggest finding someone's Entity-themed playlist and basing the character on a random song from that list.

Skam Austin: Poonam Para. I know that she’s a side character and honestly i was close to saying Jo, Kelsey or Shay but she’s my fav. I think i just see a lot of myself in her and i like how she’s a completely new and different character. She’s funny and upfront and unique and I feel extremely understood and I hope we get to see more of her.

Skam France: Imane Bakhellal. Again i was really close to saying Yann or Lucas but i think just purely because of how much i can relate to Imane and understand her she’s my fav.

Druck: David Schreibner. While i definitely relate to Matteo the most and love Amira to no end, David is hands down my favourite. He’s such an icon and he especially makes me love Druck so much. I can’t really explain why he’s my favourite so much, this one is really more of like i feel it in my soul that he’s my favourite and that’s why.

Skam España: Joana Bianchi. I... I wanted to say Amira or Lucas because i love them so freaking much and this one was honestly the hardest for me to decide but it is Joana. I don’t know what it is but i just deeply care for her so much.

Skam NL: Liv Reijners. Although i really do love like all the NL characters. Liv i decided to pick because she can sing and i love her style and she’s strong and independent and i feel like she’s a really unique noora and i just. love everything about her. I can’t find a single fault 🙈

2. fave musical moment?

Skam: håper du har plass playing when the girls go to get Sana, i think we all cry every time and i still listen to that song to this day

Skam Austin: honestly… cloutie 4 lyfe go listen to clout from grandma’s closet on soundcloud i stg their talent… is unparalleled (honorary mention, when Megan’s upset and crying and goes to see Marlon and they play the fricking meme song and stop it at “run.” i die every time)

Skam France: what else could i say other than when Lucas played ‘i love you’ on the piano like chills lich rally chills luv (honorary mention how the music goes all soft the first time Lucas sees Eliott, again iconic)

Druck: this is hard like i kind of just wanna say whenever they’ve ever used a song it’s been absolutely perfect, i think i’ll say during the first kiss clip though when they go to hold their breath and the music with the water sound effects like aaaa ded

Skam España: the last clip when they go to kiss and ‘I Follow Rivers’ starts playing like... it’s just perfect like everything comes full circle and im CRYING

Skam NL: another remake that always picks perfect music, i think my fav is whenever Liv goes to the mic to sing like i love her singing voice so much

3. if you could make your own season, who would it be about and what would happen?

I have thought about this so much it’s almost funny lmao. There’s just so much potential with Skam and then if you factor in the remakes like... absolutely spoilt for choice omfg. I’d love a Jonas season because he’s great but i really dont know what it’d even be about, Mahdi is another character i’ve always felt immensely interested in and i would love to know more about him. In the middle of typing this i’ve come to a decision actually lmao. Two words- BALLOON. SQUAD. They are literally my favourite thing about og ever seriously and Elias is my favourite Skam character. So idk maybe a season about them? and maybe about their friend group and how they’re all drifting apart or brotherhood or like healthy male friendships where they are there for each other and shit or about Even becoming friends with them again or IDK. but i know i’d have loved a season centered on them and if i had a greater mind i’d be able to come up with a good plot for them too lmao.

Skam Austin: Unpopular Opinion but i really loved season 1, however, I think i have to say season 2 because of how fucking well they developed all the characters like giving the cast input into the story was the best decision Skam Austin could’ve ever made. Also, Clout From Grandma’s Closet? like need i say more

Skam France: I only watched 3 and 4 and my fav is 3. Very good homage to OG with the story telling and made me absolutely fall in love with Lucas and Eliott. Like I went through the same motions as i did when i watched OG and it was nice to be reminded of that. Also liked the small changes they made like the Polaris thing that was iconic

Druck: SEASON 3. what an emotional fucking roller coaster. They had me hooked every single minute of the day and still do now. I love Matteo and how they changed the story up like im still pissed about the pacing kind of but honestly i loved season 3 and still rewatch it. the music was perfect, development of the characters, the softness. everything was just so good

Skam NL: As much as i love Liv I have to say season 1. it was goregously done, i loved the aesthetic and Isa is such a realistic and relatable character. Also her moments with Kes and Lucas and the moments with the girl squad, like it was just a really iconic start to an awesome series.

Skam España: I’ve only watched season 2 but i know even if i watched season 1 i would still say season 2 lmao. Honestly there is not a SINGLE thing they did wrong. like the story was perfect, the honour they did to og, how they switched the relationships up. it genuinely was just fucking perfect (except the whole panphobia thing. if that comment wasn’t said spain would have the best remake)

6. What’s your opinion on s2? what do you like and dislike the most? which remake made the best s2? (españa doesn’t count)

I am going to be truthful here and say that when i was first watching OG and watched season 2 I did like it but after growing up a bit and reflecting I now honestly really dont. like i’ve tried to avoid that season in remakes as much as i can (i’ve failed and the only noorhell i’ve not seen is frances one). I think what got me at first was the whole like layers thing to William. how there was more to him and also like the typical fanfic tropey moments between them. what i like about season 2 is the SA storyline, like that is an extremely important topic that needs to be talked about more so i like how it brought light to that and also how they show Noora handling the situation and how the girl squad are and i <3. What i dislike is how William uses Vilde and is so manipulative and ANNOYING omfg. Like i can’t explain how much his entitled rich ass frustrates me and how broken down Noora is by him.

7. what representation would you like to see in Skam (other than more wlw)?

Honestly i’d like to see more ethnic minorities tbh, especially like maybe some east asian people? I want skam to be the type of thing that no matter who you are you can see yourself represented in it and while the remakes and og do an alright job of it, i’d love to see more. i’ll say this this til the day i die- REPRESENTATION IS IMPORTANT

8. what country would you like to see a remake and why?

My biased ass is screaming Skam Scotland because like i would be able to relate to it so much and I’d love it with my entire soul but also just somewhere where the majority of the population isnt white. would be lovely for it to be in like India or Pakistan maybe so that I could personally relate to it but honestly anywhere with POC would be an absolute WIN for me. i suggest Skam Scotland where the girl and boy squad are south asians/east asians + black with the good ol’ token white friend! Hire me

167 cm i think... or 166 cm. i don’t know i should check it out soon lol .

I’m a natural dark brunnete. I always kept my wavy hair very long, especially this year and i seriously need to cut them. Even though medium hair length suits me better i refuse to cut them. I don’t style my hair because i lack the skills, so i leave them down to my waist.

Yes! I wear glasses since i was 8 and my myopia is TOO high.

Right now, no i hate it, i just want it to be over and move on to university.

I like literature, modern greek and english. But at this phase because i’m always studying i despise everything lol

14. favorite TV shows?

Well, despite the horrible ending, Game of Thrones will always be my favourite tv show( for now). From season 1 until season 8 episode 3 i loved everything about it. I would like to pretend the rest of the season doesn’t exist, and move on. My favourite characters ( and my OTP Jonerys)will always have a special place in my heart.

Peaky Blinders is my second favourite tv show, i love it! Thomas Shelby is so dark, yet who can NOT love him? Loved every season, i hope season 5 delivers too.

Stranger things is nice, i liked season 1 very much, but not that much the second season. I’m not that excited for season 3 but i hope it surprises me plesantly!

It would be unfair if i didn’t include Glee! I started watching it when i was like 12, i hold on so many beautiful memories from this show even though it is long over. Seasons 1-3 were AMAZING! I need to rewatch them soon.

Honorable mention : Skam! The original of course. I don’t usually like high school tv shows any more but i found it realistic and had cool and iconic characters!

My favourite book is ‘’Lolita’.Highly contoversial but it’s such a well written book and reading this i understood what is beautiful literature. I mean look at the opening! So beautiful! : “Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul.[...] She was Lo, plain Lo, in the morning, standing four feet ten in one sock. She was Lola in slacks. She was Dolly at school. She was Dolores on the dotted line. But in my arms she was always Lolita.”

Just keep in mind that this is NOT a love story but a twisted dark fantasy from a pervent who basically destroyed a young girls life.Okay i stop here, i just love this book so much. Other books :

A Song of Ice and Fire series. I don’t know if i want to read ADWD now, but they are excellent books. Also the World of Ice and Fire is hands down, BRILLIANT and the illustrations captivating.

The hunchback of notre dame. I can read again and again and not get tired of it.

Me Before You. Read it twice and cried twice like a baby. Heart warming. Same comment to the beautiful Light between the oceans.

1. who is your favorite character in 2?

— scott!! he will always have a place in my heart because he’s so soft, courageous, and will 100% do anything for the people he cares about. he also has a strong moral compass that is unique about him in the show, because he honestly just wants to save everyone, even the bad guys. he was done dirty in his own show— constantly being overshadowed, made a true alpha but then barely being able to use his powers to their full potential because “reasons.”

2. who is your least favorite character in 1?

—i would say e.cho, but she isn’t really a character at this point (just a plot device), so i’m just gonna go ahead and say octanakin

3. what is your favorite episode of 4?

—probably 3x13 because it was an excellent finale and the acting was truly INCREDIBLE on everyone’s part.

4. what is your favorite season of 5?

— two, because they introduced some new characters really well while also making me love the recurring ones even more. the character-driven and action-driven episodes were well-balanced and babysitter!steve was iconic.

— it’s a tie between malec and sizzy, i just love them both!

—yeah i’m basic and ship stydia. i just wish we would have gotten more actual canon content than a kiss and then ... barely anything at the end of the last season.

— day trip was thrilling, humorous, and also provided essential dynamic-building for bellarke, but i also love nevermore because it was INTENSE and lindsey’s acting was amazing! nevermind was incredible too. agh, there are too many to choose from

— 2x09had all the best content: babysitter!steve, “yeah it’s me dont cream your pants”, amazing acting, el being badass, dad!hopper, will being cared for, etc

— season 3 is one of the best seasons in american television

— since june 2015 when only season 1 was on netflix and season 2 was still ongoing. i think it was on 2x06 when i caught up (it took me 24 hours to watch it all)

11. how did you become interested in 3?

— i was a big fan of the mortal instruments books, so of course i was ecstatic when it was going to become a tv show. i loved the cast (particularly how they actually made clary a redhead and not a red-velvet-head, added so much diversity, and made alec not look 35) and watched the pilot it when it aired. i ended up liking it a lot more than the books, which i have since stopped reading because there are way too many and i find them problematic and annoying

12. who is your favorite actor in 4?

— i’m gonna be a basic bitch and say charlie cox. his performance as daredevil is amazing and his emotional range is fantastic— he played matt’s dark side really well and is also capable of being the softest bean!! he’s also so funny in general

13. which do you prefer, 1, 2, or 5?

—i like them all for different reasons, but i’m the most emotionally invested in 1 for now. it has me in a chokehold with no sign of letting me escape.

14. which show have you seen more episodes of, 1 or 3?

—the 100 has had more seasons, so 1.

15. if you could be anyone from 4, who would you be?

—karen page because she is my MOM.

16. would a crossover between 3 and 4 work?

—i feel like anything is capable in the marvel universe. matt encountering shadowhunters while fighting crime in hell’s kitcen?? discovering that there are demons lurking around?? it could totally work. i can see simon fanboying over matt’s fighting skills and i would love to see him obliterate “the infamous jace herondale” in a sparring match!

17. pair two characters in 1 that would make an unlikely but strangely okay couple

—remember during season 3b when people shipped raven and jasper? yeah, i was one of them (i still have their ship tag on my blog but i can’t remember what it is!). i think it had potential because jasper was so concerned about her and they bonded over their trauma (“nothing like a little pain to remind you you’re still alive”). they had such a great dynamic that was constantly overlooked!

18. overall, which story has the better storyline, 3 or 5?

—i’d say 3 because the worldbuilding is better. i don’t think we were ever given an explanation for the upside down or why hawkins is where the gate is, aside from the fact it’s a parallel universe (or something?). why did the demogorgan choose 1983 to strike? if these were answered, i forgot about it. also, shadowhunters does an incredible job giving each character a storyline and development, which i think was lacking for some of the characters in season 3 of ST.

19. which has the better theme music, 2 or 4?

—both of them are just instrumentals snjsjsjajs omg but teen wolf’s iconic DUN DUN, DUN DUN, DUNANANANANNANANANANANA will always make me go ham. daredevil’s theme music is beautiful but it’s also pretty long and i usually skipped it.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha - Movies Review

Like two months ago, I watched all of the Nanoha TV anime, and I really enjoyed them. I even wrote a review for all of them which you can read here. Today, I present the follow up to that post, in which I review all 4 Nanoha movies that currently exist. Not much else to say really, let’s go.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha The Movie 1st

So to start with, we’ve got a complete retelling of the first season. And it’s pretty good! This could best be described as a near line-for-line retelling of the anime, albeit with some lines of dialogue being changed to fit in better with the established worldbuilding of later arcs, the recap movie trend of cutting things out, and literally every technical element – animation, backgrounds, voice acting, soundtrack etc completely redone. And I fucking mean completely redone here. It’s not even like the Madoka recap movies where most of the shots are the same except better looking, nah literally everything here is entirely new. Cause I mean the aspect ratio’s 16:9 now so they’ve got a lot more room to work with and stuff. It’s all leagues ahead of the TV show, unsurprisingly for a movie budget. The sakuga in this is brilliant – all of the fight scenes, of which there are a lot more because I guess they wanted this to be more of an action movie, are a complete joy to look at. And the voice acting and various other sound things are just of a much higher quality too. It’s everything you’d expect from a movie and more.

About that cut stuff, it’s quite a bit. In essence like everything that’s not related to Nanoha and Fate is removed. Nanoha becomes a magical girl and sorts out her meeting with Yuuno like thrice as fast and from then on, it’s all Fate stuff. I’m mostly okay with this in so far as even though I did actually enjoy the supposedly “boring” first few episodes of the anime, I recognise why people might want that stuff cut out entirely and that that also makes the movie flow better. That being said, I do think lots of the stuff about Arisa and Suzuka being cut out makes Nanoha herself something of a weaker character, since in the TV anime she has kind of this mini background arc going on about actually talking to her friends which is fitting since she’s so insistent on talking to her enemies, but Nanoha’s still a fun main character here so I didn’t totally mind the omission.

Other than that though I don’t really recall anything especially noteworthy being cut out. It’s just the anime, minus the parts people might find boring, and in their place we’ve got extended aerial fight scenes between Nanoha and Fate that look fucking incredible. I’ve already kinda talked about those kinda though so like, whatever. The movie’s still over 2 hours long by the way so despite the omissions and the general expectations people have of recap movies, the pacing’s not actually that far off of what the TV anime had so I can’t complain on that front.

And that’s actually about all I have to say on this movie. I’d give it an 8/10, same as I gave the TV anime. I think it’s a viable substitution for the TV anime, which is the highest honours a recap movie can get, though I’m inclined to say I like it less because for as incredible as the visuals and stuff are here, I did appreciate that bit more character that Nanoha herself got in the TV show.

Oh right fuck I forgot to mention that they show Nanoha’s nipples in her transformation sequence. 10/10.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha The Movie 2nd A’s

Vita’s iconic “Takamachi Nandoka!” line got cut. 1/10.

Actually this time around not only do we get to see Nanoha’s nipples again, but we get to see Fate’s nipples, which were tragically missing for the first movie. She grew nipples just for A’s movie. How could any other character be best girl? 11/10.

Okay to stop joking, the A’s movie! This one’s a lot different from the first movie. Rather than just a straight recap of the TV anime’s plot, this is more of a retelling that changes several plot points from the original. For example, the head of the Bureau and his two catgirls that disguise as handsome blue men and interrupt climactic fights just before the uh, climax, are removed entirely. And some other such omissions and changes to the general plot in order to create a tighter and more cohesive narrative. If y’all remember my A’s review you’d know that I was kinda confused by these guys as well as some of the rules of the Book of Darkness, and this movie goes a long way to rectify that. So like, it’s the show but with a better plot. Coolio.

Fate felt like she got hardcore fucking shafted though which upset me because she’s my favourite character and I’m allowed to be biased. Most of her fight scenes we don’t really get to see much of, hell when she debuts her Sonic form we like, don’t even see her use it in combat on screen because Nanoha’s doing everything. That upset me. She still gets her dream sequence though thank fucking god or else she wouldn’t get any development.

With regards to some of the stuff that got cut out that I remember from the TV show, there’s the scene where Nanoha tells Arisa and Suzuka about her magical girl life as well as Nanoha encountering them during the Book of Darkness’s rampage, but then there’s a bit in the credits where she like, properly shows off Raising Heart, so that’s an adequate replacement. They also cut out the “where are they now?” from the end of the TV show but that makes sense since the next two movies chronologically happen before StrikerS so like, gotta make a movie marathon flow well, you know?

Despite some cuts and plot changes, the movie feels pretty fast. Yeah, even though it’s 2 and a half hours long. Maybe it just felt fast to me, or maybe it felt fast compared to the TV anime which had a lot more of Hayate slice-of-life-ing with her knights which was mostly reduced to a montage here, but idk the movie felt fast. I like, didn’t really mind though.

Obviously this movie looks and sounds a lot better then the original A’s, though I’m not even gonna lie I was kinda underwhelmed with lots of the battles here. Maybe I’m salty that I didn’t get to see Fate fight more, or more likely it’s just that the first movie’s battles were so much better. Obviously the fights in this still looked good but there were less of them, they were shorter, and they weren’t quite as fun as those of movie 1. They’re not interrupted by weird blue men though so hey it’s better than A’s proper.

And that’s pretty much all I have to say on this movie. I do think this movie is actually better than A’s, but looking at my 9s I uh, gotta keep this at an 8. Which is still a really good score so you know. Don’t know if I’d consider this a viable substitution for A’s – it’s just that little bit too different for me to so strongly be like “watch this instead of the TV anime”. But I mean I can only speak from the perspective of someone who watched the TV anime first and has only seen that plus these two movies once each, so maybe I should invest in some hot rewatch hours before I say which I think is the better viewing experience for newcomers. Anyway, time to finally move onto stuff that’s not recap movies.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha: Reflection

So at last, we’ve got some original content. At least, original put to animation. I’m pretty sure this is an adaptation of a PSP or PS Vita game? Correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure it’s one of those. Regardless, it’s brand new animated content so I’m just gonna run with it being original compared to the first 2 movies.

So the central conflict of this movie is that there’s this girl called Kyrie, whose dad is dying, so she and her AI pal go to Earth to find the Eternal Crystal – a macguffin that’ll heal her dad and also planet. In order to find the Eternal Cyrstal though, she’s kinda gotta beat up Hayate and steal the Book of Darkness, so her sister Amita comes to Earth to team up with Nanoha and friends and stop Kyrie, also she doesn’t trust the AI which turns out to be fair because in the end the AI betrays Kyrie. And it’s either before of after she betrays Kyrie but she also summons some peeps from the Book of Darkness that look like Nanoha, Fate and Hayate pretty much just by saying “give me admin privileges please”, and the Eternal Crystal also happens to actually be a Satan loli that kills planets and Iris wants to kill the Satan loli but also use it to destroy the Earth. Or something. Then the movie ends.

Sorry to give so much of a synopsis there, but I kinda wanted to convey just how many parties there are in this plot. We’ve got the good guys vs Kyrie who’s betrayed by Iris who summons another 3 people, 2 of which are obedient to the Hayate looking dude, and then an evil crystal loli who doesn’t seem that bad but Iris wants her dead, and I’ve got no idea if the Hayate looking dude is gonna stay loyal to Iris, follow the crystal loli, or just fuck off and do his own thing. Now I do think with there being so many parties, including several newcomers, the villains were kinda weak. Because we’ve got Kyrie who’s supposed to be kinda sympathetic in so far as she wants to save her dad and planet but because she’s an anime little sister nobody really thinks she’s mature, but other than a really good magical girl design, she’s got little else going on and I struggled to really sympathise with her. She shares a really good scene with Iris when Iris betrays her though, where Iris calls her out on her hypocrisy for being willing to hurt others yet reacting so negatively when Iris hurt her, so that was cool. Iris kinda sucks though and is just shady AI that completely failed to surprise me when it was revealed that she’s the twist villain. The twist that she’s not actually an AI was surprising, but didn’t exactly feel built up to at all, so it was just a twist for twist’s sake. And whatever her motive is that relates to the Eternal Crystal loli doesn’t actually get to be seen because the movie just abruptly ends. We’ve got the lookalikes summoned from the Book of Darkness, and frankly I’ve got no fucking idea how that works. As already stated Iris kinda just, summons them by saying she’s got admin privileges, no build up or anything like that, Iris says she needs them to find the Eternal Crystal but the Eternal Crystal’s just chilling in an aquarium so like. The only purpose they seem to serve is that in being lookalikes, they’re suitable opponents for Nanoha, Fate and Hayate. And credit where credit is due the fight scenes that happen as a result are great fun – Fate especially has a really touching moment with Lindy and gets to partake in a genuinely badass fight thanks to her lookaile. Unfortunately their personalities or ideals aren’t really a contrast with their main character equivalent, and they’ve not really got anything else going on, so they’re pretty crappy as villains. And then the Eternal Crystal loli just gets mind controlled by Iris before the movie, uh, ends. All of our villains kinda suck and I’m gonna have to wait for Detonation to come out in the rest of the world before seeing if they’re improved at all (fun fact these first 3 reviews were written at the end of May, just to put into perspective how long I had to wait for Detonation) (Addendum now that I’ve seen Detonation – I didn’t even need to wait 4 weeks lol).

As for the movie outside of the villains, it is a lot of fun. Nanoha being Nanoha gets a lot of time to shine and involves herself in a lot of awesome fights, and early on in the movie we get to see kind of the aftermath of her telling Alisa and Suzuka about her mahou shoujo stuff. Obviously they’re super chill so they pretty much just come to watch Nanoha and Fate’s sparring sessions which is a lot of fun. Nanoha’s great, who’d’ve thought? As a fan of Fate I desperately wanted this movie to not shaft her, and not shaft her it did – she gets a lot of awesome fights as well and the aforementioned scene involving Lindy was really, really good too. Absolute best girl. Hayate is elevated to more narrative importance than the other two thanks to her owning the Book of Darkness which Kyrie wants to and eventually manages to steal, so the quest has even more meaning to her because she needs to get back her very important book. Unfortunately she feels somewhat shafted after this. Actually that’s not entirely true, it’s just that Nanoha and Fate get like full battles with their I suppose doppelgangers, but Hayate’s fight with hers, who by the way is the king that the other doppelgangers serve, doesn’t really get shown a whole lot and so in general she gets less fun moments than Nanoha and Fate. I love Hayate though, and she’s still super fun, so like whatever. The entirety of Wolfenkritter get a lot of moments to shine in their battles, even Shamal manages to drop actual combat usefulness which was super appreciated. Yuuno appears often and even has some combat usefulness, and that was really nice to see because my boy deserves more love than he gets. Chrono is noticeably older now, which I prefer to him being the same age as Nanoha and Fate, though his usefulness is somewhat limited here, even if his first big combat appearance is a lot of fun. Arf is like, she’s not a loli but she’s a lot smaller? Does her age just fucking regress or something? She’s smaller here than she was in A’s and she’s gonna be even smaller when we get to StrikerS? Arf didn’t do much here and I’m constantly confused by her biology. And that about covers every returning hero. Kyrie’s older sister, Amita, is kind of just Kyrie’s older sister – she’s on the good side and wants to bring back her sister, and is super nice and considerate to everyone else. She’s definitely cool though and has a lot of fun moments, both in and out of combat, so I did like her. Plus like, her design is pretty neat.

Movie looks and sounds really good, obviously. I’d say it looks better than A’s movie though not quite as sakuga as the first movie, also the art style is a lot more modern than the first 2 movies which were largely just the original art style but polished up, whereas now like the detail of the eyes is more in line with what you’d expect from modern anime sensibilities. I like it, think I prefer the old art style, but this one is still nice to look at so hey. Oh this movie’s fuckin’ really gory by Nanoha standards, the Eternal Crystal loli namely causing some pretty gruesome shit, but I thought that was fun so hey.

The biggest problem with the movie probably is that it’s unfinished – it’s shorter than the previous two films but feels pretty long, in a good way though, and I felt the pacing was really solid throughout. It’s the fact that the film just abruptly cuts off when we’re literally in the middle of a wide scale battle that threatens the planet that kinda sucks, because aside from cutting that off you’ve also made it so that, at least for this movie alone, most of the newcomers kinda suck, and I have to wait until Detonation to see if they’ll get better, rather than just having this one movie alone make me like them. Overall though, I did enjoy this movie, I’d give it a 7/10. Even if the newcomers are kinda weak and the plot isn’t brilliant, the action’s super fun, presentation is all around pretty strong, and all of our favourite returning characters manage to be very enjoyable, this ain’t no StrikerS where it’s the no fun zone for the entire cast. You know in that sense I’d almost say this movie’s kinda fanservice-y, but not like, in a bad way.

Since I’m on the topic of fanservice though I’m now allowed to say that I was very upset with the absence of nipples in this movie compared to the first two, even if that one shot of Fate’s chest accentuates the shape of the nipple there’s no additional colouration like the fist two movies so it doesn’t count. 1/10.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha: Detonation

And lastly in the Nanoha movies, we’ve got Detonation, the direct sequel to Reflection. Since this is just a direct sequel to the last movie I don’t really need to go into plot details, but I will say that the actual quality of the plot is, pretty much the exact same as in Reflection. Questions about characters are answered in multiple lengthy exposition scenes that weren’t really fun to watch and didn’t actually help me to understand anything better. Apparently the doppelgangers were cats? What the hell is that one about? And Yuri the Satan loli appears to be another Book of Darkness program or something? I’m gonna have to take a long read of the Nanoha wiki to be honesty because this movie’s exposition was very hard to follow.

Despite being a continuation of the first movie, Detonation isn’t content giving us a story that only uses the pieces from the previous plot, and instead new elements that only make everything even more contrived and hard to follow are constantly introduced, including the fact that Iris can apparently infinitely duplicate weird robot clones of herself that she forms an army of and they also do shit like take over satellites and other bullshit. Or the fact that Iris was never the real villain, but instead some old scientist dude who was in charge of saving Eltria. So that’s Kyrie, Iris, this scientist, the doppelgangers, and Yuri, all of whom are technically antagonists in this saga, and all of whom have a shit ton of varying allegiances. I don’t know, man, this movie’s a lot.

There were definitely good things in this movie, though. I can’t pretend I’m a fan of the doppelgangers but they actually get a lot more good moments in this movie than they did in the last, such as Levi adopting Fate’s “help people” philosophy and getting a hug from Fate as like, a thank you, and fuck do I want to be hugged by Fate. Or at one point, Dearche like, wants to go fight Yuri but has no energy, so the other two give him their energy and die but later get their bodies back anyway and Dearche used their energy to do an attack that killed him also, but he also gets his body back, wait, what? What’s good about this? Nah see when they give Dearche their energy his design changes to like, something of a fusion of the three of them, himself being the most prominent, and I actually thought that was really cool. None of the magical girl shows I’ve seen incorporate fusion but it’s a lot of fun to use so like. I mean fuck maybe Sailor Moon has fusion and I just don’t know since I’ve not started watching that yet. Ah, magical girls. All the action and animation and sound stuff is just as good as in the first movie, though I noticed a lot more 3D models that looked ugly as hell, also there are like 6 insert songs but that’s not actually a problem at all. Nanoha’s the MC so she hogs all the glory, Fate doesn’t get anything quite as good as she got in the first movie but she didn’t necessarily feel shafted, and Hayate actually got to participate in a few fights this time, which is great. Even though I didn’t understand shit about any of them, Iris, the doppelgangers and Yuri getting to go back to Eltria alongside Amita and Kyrie was sweet. And the ending was super cool but I’ve got a bit to say about that so I’mma hit that enter keyyyy

So the ending has Nanoha flying up to space to stop one of Iris’ clones from destroying their town with a gun, and their fight, though brief, is a lot of fun. They use very different lighting in space which already makes everything look unique and more memorable than some of the other fights, but in particular, Nanoha actually ends the fight with a punch. Like a normal fucking hook to the face. It’s got a bit more flare than that but I mean, if you know me, you know I love watching little girls punch things, so this ending was really satisfying. Here’s where the levels of satisfaction start wavering though. See, Nanoha’s punch doesn’t actually end it, and instead the Iris clone just like, grapples Nanoha and actually self-destructs. And surprisingly, this actually does shit to Nanoha! She loses an entire fucking arm like holy shit she’s like 12! And dying in the cold of space with Raising Heart barely holding on, Nanoha pretty much just thinks “oh fuck, guess I’ll die now” and here’s where it gets weird. Nanoha has a dream of a younger Nanoha telling her “you must not really love yourself, huh?” and they go off on this not actually long conversation about the nature of helping people and loving yourself and being loved but here’s the thing – when has Nanoha loving herself ever been an issue in this entire franchise? She’s struggled with loneliness before, we know that much, but like actual lack of self love? That came completely out of nowhere! I appreciate the attempt to give Nanoha actual character development since she is something of a flat character but like, this doesn’t fit in with anything to do with her character as established by the franchise prior. Anyway Fate and Hayate rescue her and those two look really really good in space as well because space lighting and nice panning shots of the two in space that are drawn super fucking well. Also now I’m like, seriously curious about the power scaling of Nanoha, particularly with regards to speed, because those two got to space, like actual fucking high ass space where satellites orbit, in evidently a matter of seconds, or even minutes but like, not that many minutes. Point is they must’ve been going fast as fuck, and also Fate has her Sonic form which dramatically increases her speed and I mean all these characters use massive beams and shit, how strong are they. Not really relevant though.

Since I’ve about run out of things to say about the movie itself, let’s fuckin’ do this final thoughts thing. 7/10. Probably not actually as good as Reflection, and while that movie at least accentuated the outline of Fate’s nipples, this movie doesn’t even give us that. However, if you watched Reflection, there’s literally no reason not to also watch this. The two of them do make for a fun pair of action movies with all your favourite characters before they turned into boring military bullshit.

Conclusion

I’m only calling this section “Conclusion” since that’s what I did for my series review. Which you should read by the way if you’ve not already. Anyway, if you haven’t gathered by now, I quite enjoyed these movies! The first two are really good variations on their respective TV series and while the latter two which told one story between them had a lot of issues throughout, I still had more fun with it than I did, say, StrikerS. I’m totally okay with StrikerS aging up the characters but that new setting and specifically its tone were very boring to watch. In that sense I really like how the movies retain the tone and setting of the first two anime seasons. Like yeah movies 3 and 4 aren’t brilliant but they’re still awesome action romps with fun characters and great emotional moments, just like season 1 and A’s. I’m this deep in the Nanoha rabbit hole already, I may as well go all in and read the huge amounts of spinoff manga and so much other stuff, if I can get a fix closer to what these movies offered rather than what StrikerS offered then hey I’m gonna love it. Also getting into that stuff is a good excuse to actually see where ViVid went since the anime just, ended…

Fun time. Only one way to end thIs post.

Arya Stark. Kind to smallfolk, protects her pack at all costs, stops to smell the flowers and appreciate the smaller things in life, years can pass and she still loves others as if no time had passed at all, encourages others to see their potential, sticks up for those who can't stick up for themselves, will share her food with you even when there are shortages, will still appreciate your misshapen baked goods, etc.

Nearing the end of season 1, two of my friends came over and sat on my couch and kept going ON and ON about this "Khaleesi". I was like "bitch can't be THAT great" and started to watch the show. Turns out they were right and I was wrong.

9. Favorite magic event? (you can even pick pre-asoiaf)

The first Long Night. I'm so intrigued by the Bloodstone Emperor and Amethyst Empress - as well as these mysterious rocks falling from the sky around that time... hinting that perhaps there was some astronomical truth to the tale about dragons coming from the moon, or some sort of celestial collision... It's just so fun to speculate about.

Fangora! A small and dainty emerald green dragon (with a green flame to match 'cause fuck it).

Chernobyl!!

23 May

Those of us who signed up for the full day trip to inside Chernobyl’s exclusion zone were up early in our long pants,sleeves,with enclosed shoes with our passports ready for the security checks to go into the zone. We signed our lives away on a safety waiver, and check in sheets that go to the highly controlled checkpoints located at the different zone crossings. Visits to the area are highly controlled with only a few tour companies given permission to enter, they are required to wear a tracker at all times so they are monitored to ensure they are not going into areas where they are not permitted. We were all required to wear dosimeters so that our radiation exposure could be checked at the end of the day. Our guide, Alexi, gave us some amazing insights he has learned from years of research, insights into not only the events that lead up to what occurred in the early hours of 26th April 1986, but also the time line of sorts of what was done afterwards. A lot of the ‘truths’ surrounding the reactor explosion were lost when witnesses died, or were buried by the propaganda and coverups of the Soviets at the time. Don’t forget it took for America to call them out with the incontrovertible satellite photos of the blast for the Soviets to admit anything had happened, let alone take steps to contain the ongoing radiation leakage and further risks of explosions. When it comes to information surrounding Chernobyl it’s difficult to find a complete story, let alone be able to fact check anything. Alexi gave us the name of a you tube documentary that he advised shows the true side of what happened in reactor 4 on 26 April 1986. The " Battle of Chernobyl" if you want to look it up!

First up was a stop in Zalesye, an abandoned village within the exclusion zone. It was surreal, to step off the bus, knowing that we were walking down a main street, but seeing nothing but vegetation. Then through avenues in the trees we came across the remains of the houses, we then entered into the old town hall building with its rotting floors, and decaying walls. There were still old signs on the walls. I managed to get myself what I like to call a ‘shin - obyl’ bruise on my way in, as only I can - stacked it climbing up onto the entry. Luckily one of my bus mates helped me up as we were told not to touch walls, or ground...or anything really ... so that would be why we had to wear long pants (for when idiots like me fall over!)

The next stop was the reason the power stations were built, the Duga radar. Holy huge metal antenna array... when you know that the huge, costly, power hungry radar actually wasn’t that good at its job makes the events of the reactor explosion seem even more of an avoidable incident. Incredibly, you would have no idea that it was there until you walk into the forest of vegetation, then it’s an ‘oh my’ moment at it’s sheer size and the wonder of the precision of the components. It is slowly rusting, and someone died climbing it a few years ago, so we were not allowed to climb it.

We then headed to Chernobyl and the Reactor canteen for lunch. Yes, complete canteen lunch on a tray... Soup, mains, desert, replete with unsmiling Ukrainian canteen ladies serving it to us. With the extra bread we’d grabbed at lunch we then fed fish from the railway bridge near the reactors. Then it was up close to reactor 4 and the monument for it. I couldn’t believe we were able to get to within about 200m of it. Although there are strict rules on photos in this area - can only shoot in one direction, and there are guards and cameras everywhere.

Chernobyl town was the administrative centre for the district and until its evacuation on the 30th April 1986, housed about 14000 people It was not as close to the site as our next stop.

Alexi gave us an interesting parallel: apparently ‘Chernobyl’ means wormwood in Russian. In Chernobyl town, 164 died as part of the first responders to the explosion, and there is a memorial that has been erected in the central square depicting an Angel blowing a trumpet. The 8th book of revelations talks of a cataclysmic event : “And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.” Revelation 8:10-11. Draw from that whatever conclusions you will, interesting nonetheless...

Pripyat was designed to be new age city of sorts, with its amusement park, cafes, art installations, hotels, apartments it was coming into itself with 50000 residents, housing workers at the power plant. It was finally evacuated in the afternoon of the 27th April 1986, with residents being told they would be gone for a couple of days and to just grab a few things and leave their pets. They were never allowed to return. We climbed through the maternity hospital, where the abortions were performed, with some of its records and equipment still intact. We were warned not to touch anything that still remained as it would still be highly radioactive. Trekking through the vegetation we came across what once was a beautiful cafe on the banks of the river that was due to open on the day the city was evacuated. The stained glass art that had adorned its window depicting the four seasons, some still intact, the rest of it lying shattered on the ground. From there we headed to the sports stadium, through what we later realised was the soccer field (no sign that it was there!) To me it was incredible to see sparks of beauty still there, the glass work in the cafe, the tile art adorning the external sides of two of the buildings we saw. We ventured into the pool area of the sports complex, it’s dive platform still intact, tiles, ladders, everything still there, just decaying, old, or vandalised by some who have snuck into the area over the years. It was then time for the iconic amusement park. Again something that was only just opening when the incident occurred. It stands as a rusting memory of time gone by, bumper cars, Ferris wheel, all the fun of the fair, with that eerie overtone of nothingness or is it hopelessness, I’m not sure.

We then took off to see the last Lenin statue in Ukraine, all others have been removed. It is still located outside of the Communist party building where the ‘fake’ trial took place of a power plant director and 2 engineers, where they were found guilty of negligence and the the blame placed on them for the incident. Nothing of course said about the safety measures that were supposed to have been installed in the reactor, or the fact that they failed, or they fact that the staff were following orders as required under Soviet rule. The Chernobyl town is home to what are known as the ‘self settlers’. Previous residents who have returned of their own volition to continue living in their property.

Our last stop was in the Red forest area, northern part of the exclusion zone. It apparently received the worst of the radiation. We entered the kindergarten where to my dismay we learned that kids continued to be sent to for at least a week after the reactor explosion. Testing after the incident proved that everything including the toys they had played with were riddled with extremely high levels of radioactivity. It was poignant and incredibly sad to see the remains of the toys, the cribs/beds knowing that these children had been exposed to such toxic levels of radiation due to the inaction of the Soviet authorities.

On our way out of the zone we stopped briefly at ‘The men who saved the world’. An un-offical memorial to the first attendees, doctors, firefighters etc, who all died in hospital number six in Russia and were then buried in lead coffins somewhere in Russia. Their families were not allowed to even see them or be at the burial.

On our way out of two checkpoints we had to submit to a full body radiation scan at each in order to check for any contamination. Luckily none of us had to be decontaminated (ie hosed down!). We were then given strict instruction to shower thoroughly and ensure our clothes were either washed or kept in an area safely before we washed them... On a side note the radiation we experienced for the day was somewhere around a 5 or 6 hour transatlantic flight so I pretty much got more radiation flying over to Europe than I did wandering around all day - good to know though!

It was an amazing day. A long one, we're all tired. But wow. How lucky am I that I got to do this. Mother nature has given the human race and it's nuclear power a big fuck you. And I love it! It's surreal to walk down what was once a street realising that on both sides of you hidden by nature's growth stands the time capsule of the crumbling remnants of the buildings of whole towns. Nature has rebounded here in spades, the birds chirping constantly, the land brimming with growth, the fish teeming - and no, none of them have 2 heads or mutations anymore. Apparently nature very quickly removes such mutations when they serve no purpose. The amusement park, a ghost town of rusting steel and decaying wood. The beautiful art works of tile and glass slowly deteriorating. It's eerie, and incredibly fascinating. My emotions are everywhere. Our guide is so passionate about what happened here and what the Soviets did to cover up their mistakes and the impact this had on the people who are still affected to this day, with no accurate records of how many have died from exposure in the years since the explosion. I was astounded how close we were able to get to reactor four. Incredibly saddened at how little care was taken of the people here. This Chernobyl adventure will stay with me forever, and has left an indelible mark on my psyche. If you don’t know much about this story, read more, find as much of the truth as you can, and most important of all - never forget.

her scripts flow so gently and everything makes logical sense

and her characters are coherent

there’s just this nice touch of emotional human realism cloaking all the supernatural weirdness and i so, so appreciate that

like.. for me personally, there’s not a single writer on the current team whose writing comes close to glynn’s

i want her to write more episodes with cas though, i know she’d write him just right
