comment on sealbarrow post. errrm let me explain☝️🤓 for little purpose other than sharing my experience working with elephant seal pups

The chip is a lightweight wooden block that is glued into the seal’s fur.

Elephant seals experience what’s called a catastrophic molt, where instead of shedding fur and skin gradually as most mammals do they instead shed the entire top layer of skin and fur in big patches over the course of a few weeks.

This happens yearly throughout their life and begins when they’re pups. In this picture you can see the molted fur is brown while the new fur is grey.

Thanks to this, researchers and caretakers can do things like glue tags directly onto the seal’s skin without harming them, as it simply molts off eventually. This is done with the blocks on the head you see in the picture, and also GPS tags in the wild.

It thankfully means there’s no need to puncture the seal’s skin to implant or secure a tag, and makes retrieval easier since it literally just falls off. Its very cool

My cousin volunteers at a marine mammal rehabilitation organization and they work with a lot of orphaned sea lions and seals and you know what they use to move them around the facility?
