Theory: Splatoon 3 Will Be About Fixing Earth

I keep thinking about the salmon run trailer for splatoon 3, trying to wrap my head around why they’re bringing this game mode back, and I just couldn’t find a legit, in lore reason- until I realized something.

That’s the point. The devs, for whatever reason, are throwing out basically contradictory information to throw us for a loop. And I think that’s because they don’t want us to even have a sliver of a clue of what’s going on- because we never had the full picture to begin with.

And not just like, we don’t have the full picture as in there’s a lot of stuff not addressed in game-

I don’t think the seabeans (I’m just calling all the splat species seabeans, because it’s cute and that’s what they are) know their own history. I keep going back to Nintendo UK’s tweet.

“Where did the inklings come from”? We know that already, right? They evolved from regular squids. That’s the story, that’s all the background we need- but, then again- inklings forgot about the Octarians only 100 years after the great turf war ended. Imagine what they could lose to time in thousands of years.

The developers in the dev interviews said no one in splatoon is fully good or bad- every faction is just trying to survive an ongoing, massive resource crisis. A crisis I don’t think anyone even knows is a crisis. I think this state of desperation has been happening for so long, it’s just how things are. They don’t have the pre “screw Santa, let’s blow up the North Pole” world to compare with.

I say this all the time, but all of Splatoon’s problems can be traced back to humanity. We screwed up the planet, we did this- and then disappeared. And the seabeans still don’t know the full story.

This is LITERALLY what they think of us, they know so little:

No one was there to tell them what happened. They’ve been struggling in a world they didn’t even know could have been BETTER.

“Mammals” have returned in splatoon 3, yes- but I don’t think they’re literally mammals. (I don’t know what they could possibly be, but I think the “mammal” motif is symbolic…)

I think, storytelling wise, there’s a reason these octarians take on the same species type (category? Animal category?) as humans. It’s because still, after ALL THIS TIME- what’s happened hasn’t been addressed. They haven’t figured out the extent of their origins, what they came after and that they inherited ruins. That manifests itself- again from a symbolic standpoint, not lore wise- as the mammalian infection. History being doomed to repeat itself if they don’t find the truth.

Something in Alterna will show them that truth, and hopefully, give them the resources to fix what their predecessors had done.

As for how salmon run fits into this? Of course it’s still going on. Nothing’s changed- yet. New Agent 3 and Little Buddy are a symbol of what could happen if peace was pursued, if the cephs realize the full truth and that hey- things don’t have to be this way.

I’m not saying every faction in splatoon wants to go to war all the time, and that they’re all purposely being jerks to get a leg up and survive- I’m saying it’s possible they just don’t know any better anymore. That tensions have been so high for so long that peace became a daydream and not an actual thing that could happen.
