If someone were to say you can submit a piece of art in any medium would you consider writing to be an art medium? (Novel writing specifically but you can include essays in that as well)
#I'm honestly not sure#I feel like what you expect when you hear artistic medium is painting#photography#maybe even music#sculpture interpretive dance#for some reason I don't feel like I imagine writing a book as an artistic medium

The Wind Bride - die Windsbraut
Today we are entering the realm of mythical creatures and I am sure that you have certainly encountered this lady before. In the north of Europe this creature is known as the Wind Bride. The wind bride is the name for a sudden, very violent, swirling, howling storm wind on the coast or at sea. In her human form, she is a beautiful young bride dancing on the waves of the sea.
Sculpture Windsbraut by Hartmut Wiesner in Wilhelmshaven, Germany
Depending on the region and mythical interpretation, she can move inland. Where exactly she comes from is not entirely clear, but there is an assumption that she comes from Greek mythology. There is the harpy Aello, the daughter of Thaumas and Electra. She was sent by the gods to bring peace - even by force - and to carry out punishments for crimes. They were depicted as winged beauties, in later times also as ugly old women with sharp claws who abducted people into the underworld to torture them there.
However, it is more likely that the wind bride comes from Norse or Germanic mythology. There she is the wife of Njörd, the god of the wind, and if we go by the handbook of German superstition then she also repeatedly accompanies the Wild Hunt (I don't mean the one from The Witcher 3). This is a ghost train or a ghost army. It can chase across the sky or roam the land in the form of a procession of corpses. The sighting is usually a harbinger of catastrophe, illness and death. In their wake are the fallen of battles, the unbaptised, the executed and those who have died prematurely or violently. As a rule, the Wild Hunt or the Wild Army can be heard announcing itself by screaming, howling, wailing or music.
The Wind Bride is a cruel bride who casts a spell over unhappy souls and drags sailors on the high seas to their doom with her stormy, wild behaviour. So it's not a good omen when you see her and especially not when she's using her powers.

For lack of any other direction, you head west along the catwalk to the open doorway in the wall. To your total lack of surprise, it leads to another concrete hallway running north-south.
Opposite the doorway is a fossil, or at least the sculpture of a fossil. Obviously the labyrinth isn’t old enough for REAL fossils to have formed, and they wouldn’t form in concrete walls anyway. You think. That’s more a biology question, really.
What the fossil actually is is also a biology question. It’s about four feet tall and very, very long. You seem to be somewhere in the middle of it. It’s a…snake? Maybe? Lotta ribs, anyway. No, there’s some sort of fin on its back, you can see spines…
It can’t possibly be a sea serpent. Those are just giant squid or random whale penises! (You remember THAT biology fact, but who wouldn’t?)
Hmm, unless it’s a sculpture of a fossil of a sea serpent…
Based on the direction of the spines, you walk south toward the head. Eventually you find it, though the beast is at least forty feet long, if not longer. It has a weirdly smushed face, with a gigantic round eye and a tiny, disapproving mouth. More impressive is a topknot of spines erupting from the head like a party hat, only a little distorted by fossilization. It also has two long…deely-bobbers…on the underside that stretch back for several yards.
“Is deely-bobber the technical term, boss?” (Jimmy has to spell the word letter by letter, as this is not a standard phrase in interpretive dance.)
“Absolutely,” you tell him, studying the sea serpent in all its questionable glory. Can’t possibly be real, of course. You almost bought it until the deely-bobbers and the topknot, but that was just gilding the lily. The artist needed to quit while they were ahead.
There is a doorway on the east wall opposite the head and the corridor continues to the south.

golden frames and watercolor (headcanons of a museum date with Loki)
Timeline: after Thor Ragnarok
TW: no one
Pairing: Loki x female!y/n
Note: I always thought about Loki being fascinated by human art and poetry, so what is going to happen If you decide to bring him to a museum date? Let's see 🎨
he's so curious when you tell him that you've organised something special just for the two of us for the day
but he was offended when you revealed him that you paid for his ticket, he still has difficult to accept gifts event from you (but inside he's melting and he's so grateful)
when Loki leads you through the museum, his hidden malice is evident in the way he points out subtle details in the artworks
when you both pause in front of a surrealist painting, he offers an unconventional interpretation that leaves you both laughing
"My dear, look, the art of deception. These paintings tell stories, just like you and I."
"Hopefully, our story has a happier ending than some of these artworks."
always hold your hand as you navigate through the art-filled halls
when you find a hidden corner in the museum, Loki conjures a small illusion, and make the painting looks animated just for seeing your eyes shining in admiration
with his enchantments he deactivated the alarm and let you touch the canvas so you can feel the ancient texture
you can catch him looking silently at some little painting, realizing that even the God of Mischief can be captivated by simple beauty
"Loki, I never thought I'd see you admire a watercolor."
"Watercolor has a delicate beauty, much like... vulnerability. Don't tell anyone I said that."
he's mesmerized by all the golden frames full of baroques details, at the point he wants to buy some for himself
"Would you like me to buy one of these my dear?"
"LOKI THIS IS AN ORIGINAL FRAGONARD."
he might challenges you to a friendly competition of finding the most beautiful canvas (of course he's going to support only his opinion)
he definitely wraps his long coat around your shoulders as you both explore a section of the museum with a chill in the air
sometimes he whispering you how beautiful you are, just to making you smile and adding a bit of sweetness
"These paintings capture the essence of mortals and their fleeting emotions."
"Is that a hint of sentiment I detect, Loki?"
"Sentiment? No, just an observation. Though, I must admit, the company does add a certain warmth to the experience."
as you explore a contemporary art exhibit, Loki playfully mimics some of the avant-garde poses of the sculptures, making you laugh
spotting an interactive exhibit, Loki challenges you to a friendly game of art-related trivia, showcasing his extensive knowledge with a mischievous grin
when you both stumble upon a live art performance, Loki, appreciating the theatrics, subtly incorporates some magical effects to enhance the experience
If the museum has a VR art installation, and you insist on trying it together he's going to make fun of you because he thought it's something just for children, but then he's going to try it just for you
"I can do thousands times better with my magic, how could you enjoy such a simple thing? It's like a little TV too close to your eyes."
in a quiet moment he create with magic two sketchbooks and pencils, inviting you to sketching together, each capturing your unique perspectives on the exhibits
you come across a mirror exhibit, and Loki can't resist making a few illusions within the mirrors, creating a mesmerizing dance of reflections
"Loki, do you have a favorite piece so far?"
"Much like love, art is a complex emotion. But that landscape over there has a certain charm."
as the day comes to a close, Loki surprises you with a classic red rose and something bought at the art shop just for you, it's his way to thank you for the date together
the funny thing is that you bought something for him as well (probably a book of poetry) so it's a funny moment of you two exchanging gifts outside the museum
"But...you know dear, mixed with silence, there was a certain chaos inside this building."
"Are you referring to the art exhibition or our relationship?
"Perhaps both. Chaos keeps things interesting."
the results is that from that day, he started to bringing you to all most famous museums on Earth
That's it! 💚 As an artist this post came out straight from my heart, hope you enjoyed as much I did while I was writing it~

Instructions and rules below the cut!
Wuko Week 2024 Instructions:
Create some fanwork based on the prompts. This can be just about anything! Fanart and Fanfic, obviously, but the sky’s the limit, people. Playdoh sculpture? Embroidery? Interpretive dance video? Or, you know. Keep it simple: drabbles, loose collection of headcanons, doodles in the margins of a notebook, etc.
Post and share on the designated prompt day. Be sure to use the #Wukoweek2024 tag or mention @wukoweek2024 in your post, or submit the post directly to the blog here. Ao3 fanworks can also be submitted to the Wuko Week 2024 Collection. We will post or reblog your creation by the end of each day.
Follow along, reblog, comment on, and like other people's work. Give the creators the praise and credit they deserve for their contributions!
Rules:
Be kind. That means: Be kind to other creators when commenting/reblogging their work, avoid arguing or disagreeing unless it can be done respectfully, and do not bash other peoples headcanons or other ships/fandoms. If you are concerned about someone’s content, please message @kingwuko or @kingbadgermole and we will address/remove problematic content.
Follow the prompts… as best you can. If the prompts inspire you, create and post on the day of the prompt. But also, if you get inspired to create something that has nothing to do with the prompts, go ahead and share and tag! The prompts are just guidelines. We’ll accept any Wuko content!
Posts must depict Wuko. Feel free to include other pairings as background, but it should feature our beloved Wu and Mako. It doesn’t necessarily have to be romantic but it should have both of them and depict their relationship somehow!
Follow Tumblr’s Community Guidelines. If you have explicit content to share, make sure it either follows Tumblr’s rules or link to an appropriate outside source. If you have explicit writing please be sure to link it to Ao3 or hide the spicy parts under a cut.
Use Content warnings. Tags and community labels are helpful if your work will depict things that could be triggering. Use your best judgment but the mods may ask you to add warnings if we feel it is needed.
Have fun! See you in February!

Vanessa, a silhouette like a sculptural masterpiece
Full uncensored set: https://www.patreon.com/posts/vanessa-like-114143328?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_creator&utm_content=join_link
In the glow of crimson red, Vanessa transforms into a living canvas of elegance and expression. This October shoot, held in my Berlin studio, captures not just form but the interplay of light, shadow, and human artistry. Vanessa’s poised figure, adorned with intricate body art, dances between boldness and grace—her presence both otherworldly and visceral. The deep hues embrace her silhouette, inviting viewers into a space where beauty meets statement. Each line and curve speaks of a profound collaboration between body and lens, between artist and muse. This is more than photography; it is a meditation on form, strength, and subtlety. A vision realized, yet ever open to interpretation.

MV Interpretation of "Winter Ahead" by V (with Park Hyo Shin)
Okay, so the main character of the musicvideo is obviously Taehyung/V. In the course of the video we see that he is a sculptor, who is currently working on a statue/sculptur of a woman. In my interpretation the video is about how the sculptor is losing himself in his work and his daydreams and interpretations about his work. His work, the sculpture of a woman, is displaying his wish to have someone by his side, to take care of him and love him. In his imagination, the woman of his dreams is slowly coming to life, however in the end, he realizes that everything was in his imagination and in the process of his daydreams he started losing himself. After realizing all of that, he can finally come to terms with himself and accept himself as who he really is.
I think you can apply what's going on here not only to sculptors, but any kinds of artists, like singers, painter or actors etc.... Getting lost in their own fantasy and in their own work, which eventually leads them to losing themselves. And I guess it can also be applied to any other person, not in terms of losing oneself in work, but losing oneself in daydreams or maybe even in other people, by relying on them too much and eventually forgetting one's selfworth. However, I think it's a bit more extreme for artists. They either have the natural desire to pay more attention to details or they were trained to do so due to their career. They tend to recognize even small details and analyze even the smallest things.
Now let's analyze the MV a bit more in detail:
We can divide the MV into several parts:
1. (00:00- 00:51) Preview of the whole video with some sort of mysterious music, and sounds of footsteps, heartbeats and the ticking of a clock.
2. (00:52 - 2:15) Song 'Winter Ahead' starts, some scenes show Taehyung being alone in his house, bored and kind of tired, some show him working on the sculpture of a woman
3. (2:16- 3:04) Another character, a woman, is introduced, V is no longer alone and bored. Scenes of him dancing and having fun with the woman are alternated with scenes of him working on the female sculpture.
4. (3:05 - 3:33) He no longer stays inside the house and is bored, when he is alone, V now starts going outside even without the woman and he looks happy and free doing so.
5. (3:34-4:15)Scenes of V being alone again, but this time he seems lonely and sad, it feels like everything is falling apart.
6. (4:16- 4:50) Then a cut, to where V enters a room and finds himself among many people, dancing around happily, however suddenly all the people around him look like monsters and he gets scared.
7. (4:51 - 5:52) Cut to a scene, where he finds himself standing in front of another version of himself. They look at each other and smile.
8. (5:53 - 6:16) Images of V in different places and some flashbacks from the video, similar to the preview in the beginning, but this time with the ending melody of the song, which is comforting (not like the sounds in the preview).
...
Now that we had a quick runthrough, through what happens in the MV, let's take a closer look at everything.
To 1.: As already mentioned, the first scenes serve as something like a preview what'll be happening in the video. The mysterious sound effects I mentioned before, like loud footsteps, the music, etc., they only serve to make the whole thing more interesting and dramatic to keep the viewer from clicking away, I guess. It's like a cut to the most important scenes, so the viewer is captivated by what's going on and wondering what the context of all this is.
The last scene of the preview is him blowing out candles on a cake and after that the screen goes black. This is the end of the preview.
After that we can see him opening his eyes as if he just woke up from a bad dream. It seems like, what the preview was for the viewer, was a nightmare for him, showing him what is going to happen.
Now the real song begins:
2. All of the following pictures show V in a tired and bored state. These scenes are often blurry and even though there's a lot of light, the colours of the pictures kind of seem depressing.
He is trying so hard to find something to keep himself busy with reading or dancing around the house and here the pictures look a bit more lively and warm toned.
These scenes are alternated with scenes of him working on the sculpture of a woman.
He looks really focused and immersed in his work on the sculpture.
He's so passionate about it, that in some scenes it looks like he is standing next to an actual human being and not just a statue.
In this scene, he's engraving an 'x' behind the statue's ear (will be important later!).
3. Another character, a woman, is introduced, V is no longer alone and bored. It seems like the sculpture, V's work, has come to life and now spends time with him.
These two scenes confirm, that the woman is representing the sculpture.
Another scene that confirms this is this one:
Remember when I said that V engraved an 'x' behind the sculpture's ear? The picture on the left shows the 'x' on the sculpture and if you look closely, you can see an 'x' in the picture on the right slightly beneath the woman's ear. In this scene, V is confirming for himself, if they, the sculpture and the woman, are one.
We can see that the colors of the music video shift into warmer colours after the woman appears, which shows us how V's life starts to feel warmer and happier due to the woman's presence.
4. Now he no longer stays inside the house, when he's alone, V now starts going outside even without the woman and he looks happy and free doing so, which you can see in the following pics.
5. But it seems like everything breaks down and falls apart. The song is speeding up and flashbacks to moments between V and the woman are shown.
The switch of emotions comes with this scene of him working on the statue. The red light is the beginning of the switch from V's positive to his negative emotions. Due to the light the sculpture looks so real (as I mentioned before), and we can see the passion V has for this sculpture.
When I searched for the meaning of the colour red, I found this:
(This is where I found it.)
The color is "romantic love", which describes his passion towards the woman/sculpture, but it also "indicates danger". The red in this scene is like a warning that what he is feeling towards the sculpture is dangerous, because the woman he spent time with is NOT REAL. She is just real in his imagination and in his dreams. "[T]he color [...] means "stop".", means that he should stop thinking that all of the things he experienced with the woman were real. Because they were not.
At this point he doesn't really understand it. He just realizes that she's suddenly not there anymore.
In this scene it looks like V is wiping a tear off his face and then we see how he is trying to do the same to the statue, but as the clay (?) is not dry yet, he ends up ruining the sculpture's face. What that means will be explained later on. And we can see a broken face of another sculpture lying on the ground.
All these scenes indicate that something's not going well.
6. I don't really understand the meaning of the next scenes, but I#ll try to make sense into them. V is now opening a door and he finds himself among a bunch of people in white, who dance around and look quite happy.
Then the scene with the cake from the preview comes up, where he blows out the candles and suddenly everything around him is dark. The mood is switching up and the people around him suddenly seem scary and leave him wondering what's going on.
7. After everyone left him, he finds himself in a hallway, where another version of himself, who is bleeding, is approaching him.
A flashback pops up, where V broke the sculpture's face/ removed some of the clay in the sculpture's face by "wiping a tear off its face". This flashback seems to bring a realization to him, as his eyes suddenly show a realization. He's reaching behind his ear, we can see there's an 'X' behind his ear. (if you look closely you can see slightly see it in the picture)
This reminds of the scene, where he engraved an 'x' at this exact same spot on his sculpture, remember?
So, what does that mean? It means, he IS the sculpture. But I think that he is another one of his sculptures, not the one that was shown in the beginning. There is one that looks like him and then there's another one, that looks like the woman. Both of them have that 'x'. In the following pictures he finds the sculpture that looks like him.
Back in the hallway, the real V looks at his other version, that's standing directly in front of him, their eyes meet and they smile at each other. We can even see a tear on V's face.
this scene is about him realizing that all this time, it wasn't about receiving love from a girl, but receiving love from himself and accepting himself as he is. Accepting that in the world, the only person we should truly rely on is ourselves because in the end, the only person that will stay forever in your life is yourself.
"you'll realize where you can find paradise." These are lyrics sung in the song and the word "Paradise" is being repeated at this exact scene.
These are important here, because now V realized that he can find happiness and paradise within himself. He can find happiness without having to rely on another person. That's why the word "Paradise" is being repeated while the two versions of him look at each other and smile.
8. Now we have a little summary again, just like with the preview, but this time with more happy music, as if he has come to terms with himself and found his happy end.
Now, to conclude my interpretation: In the beginning, I said the MV was about someone losing himself in his work, which was the sculpture for V here, but it's also about someone losing himself in his his longing for love. V lost himself and broke himself (bleeding version of him, broken sculpture) because he was obsessed with the idea of being loved by the woman. Only after he realized that the woman was just in his imagination, he understood what was really important for him to fix himself. And that was loving himself.
And here we are again at BTS' "Love Yourself" message. Thank you for reading this. <3

What would it be like to have your roommates be the Emperors Children?
Emperor's Children but they are your roommates :v
Room is decked out like a art studio, filled with decadent sculptures, paintings and textures in every shade of pastel.
Closet is an overflowing catwalk of highly embellished, designer-shredded couture that somehow never gets worn twice.
Hygiene routine lasts hours and involves fragranced unguents, hour-long showers set to soothing arias and manicured grooming. Your towels are now peacock dyed.
Spends hours primping in front of the light-up makeup mirror, offers to do your glam as well
Constant stream of charming but questionable friends coming and going at all hours. Might try recruiting you for "art projects".
Sophisticated hobbies include poetry slams, interpretative dance classes, film critique. Less highbrow interests involve extremely niche conspiracy theories and unsolicited personal "therapy" sessions.
Roommate is always down to indulge in new sensations but might pressure you beyond your limits. Things can get really weird really fast.
Mood swings between euphoria and existential crisis. When the ecstasy wears off, existential crises intensify and tempers flare.
Random 2am soliloquies question the nature of reality while petting the lizard named Fluffy.

Unit 04 blog post
Hey everyone!
As was mentioned in unit 04, art is not only paintings and drawings, but also pictures, sculptures, songs, dance, and much more! It is important to emphasize this as many art forms frequently get overlooked. Humans have long been creators of art, dating back to thousands of years ago when cavemen would sketch their surroundings, documenting animals, landscapes, and celestial bodies that they could see. Their interpretation of nature was more or less an observation of the world they knew so little about. This drive still exists within us, but we are no longer just recorders of our environment, we interpret it through layers of culture, emotion, and perspective. Dr. Kurt Hahn made some really insightful opinions about how young people today are losing their physical and mental vibrancy. He pointed out six "social diseases" that include a decline in fitness, imagination, self-discipline, and compassion. These signs of modern living, which stem from a disconnect from the natural world and an over-dependence on technology, pose a problem for society. The inability to value and interact with nature is at the core of this detachment.
One method of reducing the consequences of these social problems and re-establishing a connection between people and the environment is through artistic interpretation of nature. Art facilitates communication between people and the natural world in many ways, enabling us to analyze and consider the environment we live in. Not only does art depict the aesthetic beauty of nature, but it also stimulates intellectual and emotional reactions, developing compassion and imagination that Hahn believed were diminishing. Through artistic interpretation of nature, we can counteract these declines by promoting participation and curiosity.
When it comes to interpreting the gift of beauty, there is much more to it than surface-level aesthetics. Beauty in nature is about realizing the intricate connections between all living things and the environmental systems that sustain us, not just about what is aesthetically beautiful. The intricate patterns of a leaf, the complexity of an animal's behaviour, or the patience needed to study a forest ecosystem can all be considered beautiful. Not only are they translating what they see when artists interpret nature, but they are also communicating the sense of amazement and dependency that characterizes the world. Not all forms of beauty follow strict criteria or meet preconceived notions of "perfection." A landscape's colour can make it attractive, but there are other kinds of beauty that can be found in a single, “imperfect” flower or a sunset.
Because it affects us, whether it be through joy, calm, or even sadness, beauty is unique. It causes us to stop and enjoy the present. Creating art becomes a way of expressing our feelings when we see beauty in the natural world. A poem can convey the calmness of a peaceful river, while a painting can convey the bright, alive feeling of a forest. Although they are both representations of the same world, each one displays a different perspective because they are created by different artists. By expressing nature in different ways, artists help others see and feel what they experienced, making the gift of beauty something that can be shared.
Thanks for reading!

Helen LaFrance (November 2, 1919 – November 20, 2020) was a self-taught artist born in Graves County, Kentucky, the second of four daughters to James Franklin Orr and Lillie May Ligon Orr. Known for her captures of the disappearing lifestyle of the rural South. She has been referred to as “the Black Grandma Moses.” She painted powerful and intensely spiritual visionary interpretations of the Bible, in a style that differed radically from her memory paintings.
She attended formal school for about three years but left to work on the farm. Her first painting depicting a large gray rabbit was created on the back of a leftover piece of wallpaper using watercolors given to her by her aunt. She left home to take various jobs in a hospital, caring for children, cooking, working in the tobacco barns and a ceramic factory where she decorated brand-name whiskey bottles. She made enough money to buy art supplies at the grocery store and began painting full-time.
She was an exceptional quilt maker and wood carver of animal sculptures and articulated dolls with handmade textile clothing. She shared the traditions of family and church and the values she grew up with, and recollections of coon hunts, fishing, planting and picking cotton and tobacco, growing flowers and using their petals for paint, the general merchandise store, barn dances, the circus, fish fries, family reunions, and church picnics where the community gathered together.
She created 28 religious paintings, inspired by the verses she read in a dramatic visionary style and divergent from her better-known works due to their explosive colors, themes, and size. A selection of these paintings was included in “Helen LaFrance: Kentucky Woman,” an exhibition that ran at the prestigious Speed Art Museum. The inaugural exhibit of these allegorical paintings took place at Vanderbilt University. Sponsored by the Divinity School’s Religion in the Arts & Contemporary Culture program, these images had never been displayed to the public. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

I don't have one from the lists but something more general like jack + the two of you listening to a mutual friend but every other sentence they have triggers like an inside joke between you and him!
consider it done, anon! 🫡🫶🏼
Inside Jokes and Friendship
wc: 2.8k
You sit comfortably on the plush couch in your cozy apartment, a soft light emanating from the floor lamp casting a warm glow across the room. Jack, your charming boyfriend, sits beside you, his lean, muscular frame relaxed yet exuding an undercurrent of energy. The scent of the homemade apple crumble you've both been eagerly waiting to devour fills the air, mingling with the faint aroma of rain from the window left ajar.
Opposite you is your mutual friend, Lila, her dark hair cascading over her shoulders as she speaks animatedly, her eyes sparkling with mischief. She's been regaling you both with tales from her latest globe-trotting adventure, her words painting vivid images of exotic landscapes and eccentric characters she's encountered. You listen intently, nodding and smiling at her antics, but your gaze frequently darts towards Jack, seeking the familiar comfort of shared amusement.
As Lila recounts the time she got lost in the labyrinthine streets of an ancient Italian city, you remember the first time you and Jack played hide and seek in a similar maze-like neighborhood, his laughter echoing off the cobblestone as you searched for him. Every time she says "turned a corner," you and Jack exchange a knowing smirk, recalling the countless twists and turns that led to your first kiss.
The rain outside taps a gentle rhythm on the windowsill, a soft serenade to accompany the tales of her escapades. You lean into Jack, the warmth of his arm around your shoulder a silent reassurance that despite the miles you've traveled separately, you've found home in each other.
Lila's story shifts to a mishap with a local delicacy, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment as she recounts the misadventure. The word "chocolate" slips from her lips, and you feel Jack's body quiver with suppressed laughter. You know he's remembering the time you both tried to make fondue for the first time, the molten mess you ended up with, and the sticky kiss that followed. You elbow him gently, your eyes crinkling at the corners with mirth.
The conversation ebbs and flows, Lila's words weaving a tapestry of humor and wonder. Yet, with every shared look, every whispered aside, you and Jack are in a world of your own, a private comedy show where only you two hold the punchlines.
Lila's voice rises, recounting the moment she stumbled upon a hidden jazz club in the heart of Paris, where the music was so infectious she had to dance. You glance at Jack, the corners of your mouth twitching upward as the memory of your impromptu dance in the rain floods back—his hands guiding yours, the two of you laughing as you twirled together in the puddles of London.
Jack squeezes your shoulder lightly, a silent acknowledgment of the private joke. His thumb traces small circles on your skin, sending a shiver down your spine. You lean into the touch, your heart swelling with affection.
Lila's story transitions to a serendipitous encounter with a famous artist in a bustling New York gallery. She describes the vibrant colors that leaped from the canvas, and how she felt an instant connection to the piece.
"It was like the universe painted it just for me," she says, her voice filled with awe.
Jack's fingers tighten slightly around your shoulder, and you bite your lip to keep from giggling. You recall the time you both stumbled into an avant-garde art exhibition, where you pretended to understand the abstract sculptures while Jack playfully whispered absurd interpretations into your ear, making you snort with laughter.
As Lila's narrative reaches its crescendo, you find yourself lost in the rhythm of her words and the unspoken conversation between you and Jack. The three of you have been friends for years, but it's these shared moments that have become a secret language, a dance of knowing glances and subtle nods.
The rain outside has become a symphony, crescendos and decrescendos punctuating Lila's story. You're drawn to the sound, the way it mirrors the emotional highs and lows of the evening. You look at Lila, her expressive gestures painting the air with invisible brushstrokes as she recounts her experiences.
"And then, I looked up and saw the most incredible sunset," she says, her hands framing an imaginary horizon.
Jack's eyes meet yours, and you both know what's coming next. The memory of the sunset you watched together from the beach, the one that painted the sky with shades of pink and orange so vivid it seemed unreal. The sand beneath you was warm, the waves whispered secrets to the shore, and Jack's hand found yours, weaving your fingers together in a silent promise of forever.
The unspoken joke lingers in the air, thick with nostalgia and the sweetness of a shared past. You lean your head against his shoulder, the weight of his gaze a warmth that spreads through your core. Lila, oblivious to the silent conversation, continues her story, her voice a gentle backdrop to the symphony of the rain and the whispers of your hearts.
"And that's when I knew, I had to come back home," she says with a dramatic flourish, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears.
You and Jack exchange a knowing glance. "Home," a simple word that carries a universe of meaning for the two of you. It's where you've built a life together, where the walls are lined with shared memories, and the floorboards creak with the weight of your laughter.
As Lila collects herself, you stand up and stretch, the warmth of the room urging you closer to the kitchen where the apple crumble awaits. You grab three plates from the cupboard, the porcelain cool against your fingertips, and begin to serve the dessert. The sweet aroma fills the space as you carry the plates back to the living room, placing one in front of Lila, who's now wiping a tear from her cheek.
Jack reaches for his plate, his hand brushing yours, sending a jolt of electricity up your arm. "Thanks," he murmurs, his eyes holding yours for a beat longer than necessary. The intimacy of the gesture is not lost on you.
As you all dig into the warm apple crumble, the conversation turns to the upcoming tennis tournament. You listen intently as Jack's voice fills the room with excitement and determination. He's been training tirelessly, and his passion for the sport is palpable. Yet, amidst his strategic discussions with Lila, you find your thoughts drifting back to your own shared history.
Every time Jack mentions the word "tennis," your mind jumps to the countless times you've watched him play, cheering from the sidelines, your heart racing with every volley. You remember the sweaty hugs post-match, the smell of his cologne mingling with the scent of victory. The way his eyes light up when he talks about the sport is contagious, and you can't help but feel proud of the man he's become.
As you sit back down with a plate of apple crumble, Lila's eyes follow your movements. She knows about your history with Jack, the way you've supported each other through the highs and lows. She's the kind of friend who can read the air, who understands the depth of a look or a touch without it being spelled out.
"So, what's next for you two?" she asks, a knowing smile playing on her lips as she takes a bite of the warm dessert.
Jack looks at you, his eyes gleaming with excitement. "Well, I've got the tournament coming up, and…"
You cut in, unable to resist the urge to tease him. "And I'll be there with bells on, cheering louder than anyone else in the stands."
Jack rolls his eyes playfully, "Bells? Really?"
You grin, a twinkle in your eye. "Maybe a vuvuzela."
Lila chokes on a laugh, apple crumble flying from her mouth. "Only you would think of that." She wipes her mouth with the back of her hand, still giggling. "Jack, you're in for it now."
Jack shakes his head, his smile a blend of fondness and exasperation. "Always the dramatic one."
You shrug, scooping a mouthful of apple crumble into your mouth and speaking through it. "Someone has to keep things interesting."
Lila nods, her laughter subsiding. "And you do that in spades."
The three of you sit in companionable silence for a moment, the rain outside now a gentle lullaby. You take a bite of the apple crumble, the sweetness of the apples and the crunch of the topping a perfect harmony in your mouth. The warmth spreads through you, a comforting blanket against the chilly evening.
Jack, ever the competitor, starts to recount his training regimen in detail, the sweat and the sore muscles, the relentless pursuit of perfection. You listen with admiration, the familiar cadence of his voice a soothing background to the evening. You've heard these stories before, but they never get old. You know each serve, each victory, is a testament to his dedication, a reflection of his soul.
As he speaks, you can't help but trace the contours of his face with your eyes, the sharp line of his jaw, the curve of his nose, the way his eyes crinkle when he's about to laugh. You're in awe of him, this person who has chosen to share his life with you.
Lila's laughter subsides, and she looks at you both with a fond smile. "You two really are something else," she says, her eyes shining. "It's like you have your own little bubble of happiness."
Jack nods, his gaze still on you. "We do, don't we?" He says, and you feel your cheeks warm at his words.
You take a sip of your drink, the warm liquid soothing your throat. "What about you, Lila?" you ask, redirecting the conversation. "What's next on your travel itinerary?"
Lila's eyes light up as she recounts her plans to explore the mystical landscapes of Iceland. Her tales of geysers and the Northern Lights pull you into a world of wonder and adventure. Yet, as she speaks, your thoughts wander to the cozy nights you and Jack will share, snuggled under blankets, watching movies and ordering takeout.
"I can't wait to see the Northern Lights," she says, her voice filled with longing. "They're supposed to be so magical."
Jack looks over at you, his eyes twinkling with an unspoken dare. "We should go there one day, just the two of us."
You feel a thrill at the idea, your heart racing at the thought of exploring the world with him by your side. "Yeah," you agree, your voice a little breathless. "We should definitely do that."
Lila nods, her eyes sparkling with excitement for you both. "It'll be the perfect romantic getaway," she says, her voice filled with a knowing wink.
The conversation shifts to travel plans and bucket lists, but you can't help the way your thoughts keep straying to Jack. His fingers drumming a steady rhythm on the armrest, the way his eyes light up when he talks about the thrill of the game, the gentle curve of his smile when he's listening intently to something you say.
As Lila shares her travel highlights reel, you find yourself intertwining your fingers with Jack's, the warmth of his hand a reminder of all the moments that have led to this cozy night in. The rain outside has become a gentle backdrop, the soft pattering a soothing white noise to your shared laughter and easy banter.
The conversation veers towards the upcoming tennis tournament again, and Jack's passion for the sport ignites the room. He talks about the meticulous training, the relentless pursuit of perfection, and the adrenaline rush of a match point. You can't help but be captivated by the fire in his eyes, the same fire that burned the first time he held your hand, the first time he told you he loved you.
Lila, ever the social chameleon, switches gears and starts sharing her latest obsession—a podcast about quantum physics and its impact on everyday life. You and Jack listen with genuine interest, asking questions that show you're engaged, but it's the way his hand finds yours under the blanket that keeps you grounded in this moment.
As Lila's voice weaves through the complexities of entanglement and superposition, you can't help but draw parallels to your own relationship—how every choice, every interaction, affects the outcome of your shared journey together.
Jack's hand tightens around yours as Lila discusses the butterfly effect, and you feel a rush of affection. You know he's thinking about the small moments that have led to the two of you being here, now, in this moment. The way a casual coffee date turned into an unforgettable weekend getaway, or how a spontaneous dance in the rain grew into a declaration of love.
The conversation shifts again, and Lila pulls out her phone to show you a hilarious TikTok she stumbled upon. The three of you laugh in unison, the sound bouncing off the walls of your cozy apartment, creating a symphony of friendship and love. It's moments like these that remind you of the beauty of shared experiences, the joy of finding people who resonate with your soul.
As you watch the video, you feel Jack's gaze on you, his eyes filled with affection. He knows you're not a fan of social media trends, but he loves watching your reaction to Lila's latest finds. You shoot him a look, rolling your eyes playfully, and he chuckles, his thumb tracing lazy circles on the back of your hand.
The three of you continue to laugh and share stories, the rain outside now a comforting white noise as the night wears on.
Lila, noticing the time, starts to gather her things. "Well, I should probably head out," she says, reluctance in her voice. "I have an early flight tomorrow."
Jack nods, his hand still intertwined with yours. "We'll miss you, but we'll be sure to catch up soon."
You stand up with Lila, the warmth of the room and the closeness of the evening making you feel slightly reluctant to let the night end. "Yeah, don't be a stranger," you add, walking her to the door.
As you hug her goodbye, she whispers into your ear, "Take good care of him, okay?" You nod, knowing she means more than just Jack's physical well-being.
After closing the door behind her, you turn to Jack, who's already cleared the plates and is washing up the dishes. The domestic scene is surprisingly intimate, a stark contrast to the grandiose tales of Lila's adventures. You walk over to him, wrapping your arms around his waist from behind, resting your chin on his shoulder.
Jack turns, his hands still in the soapy water, and kisses the tip of your nose. "Miss me already?"
You laugh softly. "Always."
Jack winks and continues with the dishes, his movements efficient and precise, much like his backhand on the tennis court. You watch him for a moment, the muscles in his arms flexing as he rinses a plate. You can't help but feel a swell of admiration for his dedication to both his sport and to you.
"Hey," he says, turning off the faucet and grabbing a towel. "Dance with me?"
You smile, feeling the warmth of his question spread through your chest. "Always," you reply, allowing him to lead you to the center of the room.
Jack takes your hand, his other hand resting gently on your waist. He sways you to the unheard rhythm of a silent melody, your bodies moving in perfect harmony despite the absence of music. The warmth of the room, the faint scent of apple crumble lingering in the air, and the soft patter of the rain outside create an intimate cocoon around the two of you.
You melt into his embrace, your heart syncing with the steady beat of his. The dance is familiar, a silent language that speaks volumes about your love. Every step is a whispered promise, every turn a secret shared. The tapestry of your past unfurling with every movement, each thread a vivid memory of moments that have brought you to this place.
Jack's hand is firm yet gentle on your waist, guiding you through an invisible routine that you both know by heart. You close your eyes, feeling the warmth of his breath against your cheek, the steady thud of his heart beneath your palm. The dance floor is your universe, and in this moment, nothing else exists but the two of you.
As you glide across the floor, the rain outside seems to slow its tempo, the drops becoming a soft serenade to your silent ballet. You can't help but smile at the memory of your first dance together, the awkwardness and laughter that had filled the room. Now, it's as if you've been dancing together for lifetimes, your movements a silent poetry of understanding and adoration.

I've been tweeting a bit through mine and @ark-shifter's first play-through of Gotham Knights on Twitter (you can see my ongoing list of the explicitly queer parts of the game (including Tim's canon bisexuality, The Squad making plans to go to Pride, and multiple pride flags as far as the eye can see) here). But I wanted to talk a bit more extensively about Dick Grayson in the game and how the writers and devs so carefully made him Schroedinger's Queer.
And just to be clear about this from the start: This is not a callout post or an accusation of queerbaiting. I'll explain more why later, but my stance is that they did an excellent job and I love the way they handled it.
Needless to say, but saying nonetheless: Spoilers under the cut.
First let me explain what I mean by Schroedinger's Queer.
Basically, every bit of queerness that comes up around Dick is circumstantial evidence. It might be confirmation that Dick is queer, but there might be some other reason for it.
I realize that's not very clear, so here's the examples I can remember off the top of my head:
During one of Dick's cut scenes, Alfred makes him some tea and serves it to him in a souvenir bi pride Bludhaven mug. You could interpret this as that mug being his mug, that he bought it because he identifies as bi and wanted the mug because of that. But he might have bought it because Tim is bi and it meant something to him because of that. He might have bought it for Tim. Or maybe he didn't buy it at all, maybe it's Tim's mug that he bought for himself when he was visiting Bludhaven. Babs emails Dick about an interview that he did, specifically mentioning the number he did on the interviewer. The email includes a snippet of the interview where the male interviewer talks about Dick being extremely flirtatious with him, and quotes him answering a question about his type with, to paraphrase, "I don't have a type, all people are beautiful." You can interpret this as an at least semi-authentic interview where Dick's answering genuinely, even if he is playing up a flirty public persona. Or, given the number of discussions of Bruce's flirty playboy persona (there's video of a half-naked table dance with an ice sculpture) in the game in general, you can just interpret this as Dick picking up where Bruce left off and taking on his own flirty playboy persona where he says things he doesn't really mean to throw the public off the scent. There's an email exchange between Babs and Jason where they make plans to attend Pride in costume because Babs overheard Dick and Tim talking about going together. You could interpret this as Tim and Dick talking about going without including Babs and Jason because Dick and Tim are the queer ones and it's a queer event and so they want to go. But they don't say why Tim and Dick talked about going without including Babs and Jason. Maybe Tim just brought up wanting to go but not wanting to go alone and Dick was like "Yeah totally, I'll come with you" and they were going to ask Babs and Jay to come with but they beat them to it. Tim tells Babs about this boy who flirts with him and just asked him out and he said yes. Babs is super encouraging and tells him that if he ever needs any advice, she's dated a lot of guys and she learned nothing, so he should just ask Dick. This could be Babs telling Tim that Dick has better experiences dating men than she does so he'll have better advice than her! But it could also just be about Dick being Tim's oldest brother and the one he asks for advice first anyway for things interpersonal stuff. Maybe she genuinely thinks that he's learned more from all the dating he's done. Or maybe it's just because he's a guy who's dated before and will know better what a guy wants out of a relationship.
Now I, as a queer and a firm supporter of Queer Dick Grayson, am certainly inclined to read these things in the gayest possible framing. But someone who is straight and/or inclined to see Dick as straight can easily just see someone who's supportive of his bi brother and uses hypersexuality as a means of distracting people from thinking he's roaming the streets at night fighting badguys (which, I'll be honest, is less effective for Nightwing than it was for Batman, but that's besides the point).
Like, say, the people who own the character and have a financial interest in discouraging any evolution of the character that could be controversial and/or they see as fundamentally changing him.
There have been efforts to introduce queerness into established superheroes (in both Marvel and DC) for DECADES. A lot of times when you see something in a comic that seems really gay and you're like, "How did the artists/writers NOT REALIZE" they absolutely did realize and are doing everything short of explicitly confirming it in-panel because the higher ups won't let them.
Tim Drake was originally introduced in 1989, basically as a way to reintroduce Robin with a more personable character than Jason had. He was not allowed to be explicitly queer until 2022.
33 YEARS.
For a character who basically existed as a second attempt to give Batman a Robin again because they were invested in Dick being Nightwing so they didn't want to revert him back, and they let Jason be killed, but Batman had only been without a Robin for his very first year of publication. So they needed someone in the position and they needed someone who was least likely to cause a visceral reaction in their readers like Jason did. (Which, to be clear, isn't to say that Tim hasn't evolved into a really interesting, nuanced, and generally wonderful character in his own right; or that the folks who actually created him didn't create him also conceive him as a fleshed out character.)
But we're talking about Dick Grayson. Who, at this point, has existed for 83 years. Less than twenty years shy of a century. He's existed almost as long as Superman and Batman — Superman was introduced in 1938, Batman in 1939, and Dick in 1940. He may not hold exactly the same place in popular culture that Superman and Batman do, Robin is still a legacy character, "Batman & Robin" is a phrase that basically everyone knows, and when you ask the average person who Robin is, they'll answer or describe Dick Grayson.
And Dick Grayson is not allowed to be queer.
He's too well-known. He's too popular. He has too much publication history where he's written, ostensibly, as straight. It doesn't matter that a large swath of his fans are, themselves, some flavor of queer. It doesn't matter that citing his publication history is patently ridiculous given the nature of the superhero comic industry. It doesn't matter that real life people have revelations about their sexuality at all points in life and "some point in their twenties" is literally one of the most common and far from the latest. It doesn't matter that bisexuality exists and would allow Dick to be queer without invalidating all of the (extremely popular) canon relationships he's been in over the years .
And this is when we swing back around to the question of how is this not queerbaiting.
First let's define queerbaiting. Queerbaiting is a term for media where the narrative hints at characters being queer — or that queerness plays a large role in the romantic plot(s) — but in actuality it's either a very small part or never actually exists at all.
A really blatant example of this was the marketing campaign for the first season of Riverdale. A clip of Betty and Veronica kissing was used in the ads and commercials. By featuring it in an ad for a show that hadn't premiered yet, they implied that some level of queerness between Betty and Veronica would be a regular, if not prominent, feature of the first season at least.
In actuality, the kiss was a single, one-off moment that, in the narrative of the scene, was just meant to surprise the girls running cheerleading tryouts and it never came up again.
With that in mind, I can see how reading all of these hints at Dick being queer with nary a peep of actual explicit confirmation might make people cry queerbaiting. But I don't think it is. For a few reasons.
One of them, I admit, is pure vibes. This all feels, to me, like a genuine expression of queerness. I don't know how many, if any, of the writers or devs of Gotham Knights are queer. But as a queer person — particularly one who's read queerness in Dick Grayson for a long time — this felt not only true to Dick's character, but true to a queer reading of his character.
Particularly in conjunction with word from on high that Dick isn't allowed to explicitly be queer. It's as queer as they could safely make him without getting in trouble or having DC scrap the whole project or give it to someone else.
And then ... there's everything else. All those bits and pieces and details that I mentioned in that Twitter thread. The rainbow flags, the gay neighborhood, the pride flag colorways for the bike, the number of explicitly queer NPC's just roaming around their version of Gotham. It would be one thing if it was just a one-off bit of idle dialogue about Tim's boyfriend and the interview snippet and maybe a rainbow flag above the arcade, maybe even the Pride mural in the gayborhood. That's what I would expect from a kind of well-meaning but kind of clueless dev team who doesn't really understand queer culture.
But you don't populate your game with gay NPC's and let players ride around on a nonbinary pride colored bike if you're not genuine in your desire to give some real, genuine, thoughtful queer rep.

Who are you to interpret nature through art? How do you interpret “the gift of beauty”?
Who am I to interpret nature through art? I am someone deeply captivated with the great outdoors, finding comfort in the rustle of leaves, the dance of sunlight through the trees, and the gentle melodies of chirping birds. For me, nature is not just a place, but it’s a canvas of boundless beauty waiting to be explored, appreciated, and immortalized through art. Art, in its various forms, has a unique ability to mimic the intricate patterns and vibrant colours of nature. The strokes of a paintbrush or the chisel marks on a sculpture can capture the essence of a blooming flower, a majestic mountain, or a serene river, allowing us to carry a piece of nature’s beauty with us, even indoors. But art's role doesn’t stop at only imitation – it goes deeper.
Art is a gateway that opens our eyes to the profound beauty existing in the natural world. It serves as a bridge, connecting our emotions with the wonders of the environment. In chapter five, the concept of “the gift of beauty” is perfectly defined. Interpretation, at its core, aims to instill in people the ability and desire to sense the beauty in their surroundings.
Renowned artists like Vincent van Gogh have demonstrated the transformative power of art. Through his masterpieces, van Gogh breathed life into nature, immortalizing its beauty on canvas. His works have allowed people to perceive nature in diverse forms, aiding in a collective understanding and appreciation for the natural world. Art, in this context, becomes a universal language, transcending cultural boundaries and bringing people together in awe of the Earth’s wonders.
However, art is not just about aesthetics, but it’s also about education and awareness. More than a beautiful object, art can be a powerful tool for change, addressing pressing environmental issues like conservation, sustainability, and biodiversity. It has the ability to interact with viewers by sparking conversations about crucial environmental issues. By depicting threatened habitats, endangered species, and the delicate balance of ecosystems, art educates and engages. It touches hearts and minds, inspiring action and nurturing a sense of responsibility towards the environment. Yet, the interpretation of art is as diverse as the art itself. Art is subjective, and its beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. Each stroke of the brush, every sculpture, and every photograph can evoke different emotions and interpretations. What one person sees as a symbol of hope, another might perceive as a reminder of fragility.
In essence, being someone who interprets nature through art is an insightful journey of connection, education, and advocacy. I think it’s about capturing the essence of nature’s beauty and sharing it with the world, while igniting a spark of appreciation, understanding, and action. Through art, we not only renew our connection with nature but also invite others to experience the gift of beauty that the natural world graciously entrusted to us.
Thanks for reading :)
