🇯🇵 The Sony NEWS (Network Engineering Workstation) is a series of UNIX-based workstations and servers developed by Sony Corporation. Introduced in 1987, the NEWS series represented Sony's ambitious entry into the high-performance computing market, targeting professionals in engineering, scientific research, and academia.
💾 In the late 1980s, the computing world was rapidly evolving with a growing demand for powerful workstations capable of handling complex tasks. Sony, primarily known for its consumer electronics, ventured into this niche market with the NEWS series to provide high-end workstations for network computing and engineering applications. The initial model, the NEWS NWS-800, was unveiled in 1987. It was designed to compete with established UNIX workstations from companies like Sun Microsystems and Silicon Graphics.
💻 The early Sony NEWS models were based on the MIPS architecture, a series of RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computing) processors known for their performance efficiency. Later models transitioned to other architectures, including the Intel x86 family. The NEWS series ran on a customized version of UNIX, providing a robust and versatile environment for software development, data processing, and scientific computations. The workstations boasted impressive processing power for their time. For instance, the NWS-800 featured a 16.67 MHz R3000A processor and supported up to 24 MB of RAM, which was substantial in the late 1980s.
🖥 High-resolution graphics capabilities were a standout feature of the NEWS series, catering to applications requiring detailed visual representations, such as CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and multimedia development. As the name suggests, network engineering was a core focus. The NEWS workstations were designed with advanced networking capabilities, including support for various networking protocols, which was critical for collaborative engineering projects and research. The machines were equipped with sizable storage options, including SCSI hard drives and support for external storage devices, ensuring ample space for large datasets and software applications.
⚙️ The Sony NEWS workstations found use in numerous specialized fields. They were particularly popular in academic research labs, animation studios, and engineering firms where high computational power and graphical capabilities were essential. Set up a nextcloud backed by a 1TB Hetzner storage box on my server. Fio benchmarks on that say it gets "pretty normal hard drive access over the network" performance which is fine, that's all I need. Hetzner boxes are just little Samba/DAV/SSH fileshares and while it'd be nice if they were doing virtual SCSI or something it's fine.
I wouldn't use it as my only backup but the plan is to use this to back up my photos which are currently manually backed up to external drives and backblaze, and eventually to move those to a local NAS.
Nextcloud is weird. It's very smooth, shockingly well put together, you can see where they're selling to industry and where that trickles down. A lot of user management stuff and synchronization.
Still needs some setup but I am interested to try and run either Nextcloud Memories or Digikam against the box. My home internet is 10Mbps up so uploading all my photos will take uhhhhhh 9+ days this is probably what will get me to talk to Vodafone about getting their service.
You can do calling! Which is cool. I have run various self-hosted chat servers on various protocols for like three people to use over the years but never anything with audio or video.

part 2 of the cool interview, and some more pics :>
“Pro-file: Nailing a New Look” pt 2
Q&A with Trent Reznor and Rob Shriden about All That Could Have Been
By Mathew Honen for Macworld on February 1st, 2002
Tumblr media
This is a continuation of my previous post, the rest of the interview, and some pictures to go along. I enjoyed reading this interview, they talk about something I don’t see a lot, I hope you enjoy.
Tumblr media
Q: What was the experience of using DVD Studio Pro like?
Sheridan: At one point during the set, there are these three giant video screens that come down behind the band and project these incredible videos that Bill Viola [did for us]. During that portion of the set on the DVD, it's cutting between wide and tight shots and shots of Trent singing. But because these screens were so amazing looking, we thought it would be great to be able to switch between an angle where you could just watch the screen and then back to the cut showing the band playing.
Reznor: There some extra things in there that we shouldn't get into too much because over time they'll be revealed. But there are a lot of little hacks into the OS of the DVD, menus that you think pop up differently than they did the last time, to try and make the whole experience immersive. It was fun to be able to see what you could do with the medium and actually do it.
Q: Didn't you record Pretty Hate Machine on a Mac?
Reznor: Yeah, I've had a Mac since the very first one. I was also using a Commodore 64 for MIDI. At the time of Pretty Hate Machine, I had a Mac Plus. I did all the sequencing of that record on that. With Broken, Studio Vision had come out. That was the first marriage of MIDI and digital audio, and that forever changed the way I was going to record. Now that it's gone from recording everything on tape with a few things on the computer to recording everything on the computer, it's really changed the roles of a lot of people in the studio. The programmer's job is much more the engineer now. All the engineers now have to know Pro Tools.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Q: After providing the music for Quake, are you scoring any more games?
Reznor: I've been discussing things with Id Software for Doom III. It's not formalized at this point, but it's something I really want to do. When I did Quake, we were still questioning if the audio was going to be streamed off of CD, which if it wasn't was incredibly limiting. But with as interactive as things are now, and as immersive as the engine they've been working on is graphically, and some of the program is so moody; it's like scoring a film. Yet it's much more intense than a film because it doesn't always go the same way, it has to be interactive. Plus the mood of the game is so dark and evil, it's interesting to me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Q: What kind of rig do you have in your studio?
Reznor: I set this up several years ago to Marilyn Manson's Antichrist Superstar. It's an SSL analog big console, and we've moved away from two 48-track analog tape to everything being recorded on hard disk. We have 72 tracks of in-and-out ProTools hardware. The main computer in there right now is an 867MHz G4 with 1GB of RAM and several fast SCSI cards. We still use SCSI drives. We have a few of them laying around to always have at least two 36GBs online at all times, and we have a big tape backup system that backs us up every night. We have a secondary Mac in the control room as well that we use for software synthesis and running through plug-ins in real time. I think the coolest thing that's happened in the last few years is with synthesizers going virtual. That's why we have another Mac that's just up to run things in real time, running Reason or Reactor, or a number of software samplers like Battery or Absynth. Reason is from Propellerhead--it's spectacular. There's a lot of gear just being reduced to a PowerBook.
Q: Do you have a Titanium PowerBook?
Reznor: I'm about to as soon as I can get Apple to give me one. In the meantime I've got a gasoline-powered 500MHz G3.

Crusty Lives!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Crusty the Macintosh SE was repaired at VCF Midwest 18 by CJ. Maybe not completely, but well enough to make it try to boot intermittently. Parts of the machine were cleaned with a brush and in lieu of isopropyl alcohol,
Old Bay vodka.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Following the power supply repair/replacement, many of the socketed elements required that pins be cleaned and reseated. Some of the garbage sockets were outright replaced. The clock crystal also failed, and the BBU (Bob Baily Unit, one of the VLSI parts does many important timing related tasks) was intermittent, so it needed to be swapped for another.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The original SCSI hard drive was replaced by a modern SD card implementation, but it still has some problems to overcome before it's able to boot consistently. Initially, the project was planned to end after this VCF, but that plan has since been revised. To what extent additional repair attempts will be made to crusty is not yet set in stone, but here's what we know right now:
More shitty sockets will be swapped out, the SCSI bus will be troubleshot, the floppy controller (IWM) will be repaired, and probably a few other faults will be found in the process. They haven't yet given up on this poor little Mac SE
Tumblr media
Crusty, the Macintosh SE
Crusty was found in a scrapper's yard, having sat out in the rain for quite some time. It was rescued from that yard, and was pretty damaged internally, rusted and not great. It was neither worth repairing, nor had anything to salvage to repair other machines, minus a stick of RAM. Hard drive was seized up, motherboard wasn't great, etc.
Tumblr media
Surprisingly, it didn't take much to get it to run 2 years ago at VCF East in 2021. Seeing as there was nothing to lose, the owner then buried in the dirt for a year, excavating it just before VCF East in 2022. It was brought to the show, cleaned off enough to see what was going on, and miraculously, it ran again! Following the event, it was then unceremoniously kicked into a lake where it sat for 8 months, before being extracted prior to the first freeze that could have destroyed the picture tube. It sat in a barn until VCF East this year.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What you see here is how it arrived at the show, followed by the crowd of folks who gathered to watch this chaotic repair attempt by a friend of the owner. It was cleaned slightly, then signed by a number of youtubers, before an attempted diagnostic and repair was attempted. Sadly, the power supply was beyond saving. A donor supply was attached, but it too was broken.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Crusty will return at VCF Midwest later this year, to be repaired at the show with the right replacement parts.

Y tu ¿Aun conservas algunos discos Zip p productos Iomega? Yo en la personal tengo cientos de estos discos, varias unidades 100 y 250 del Zip una unidad externa Predator.

The Apple Interactive Television Box (AITB) is a television set-top box developed by Apple Computer in partnership with a number of global telecommunications firms, including British Telecom and Belgacom. Prototypes of the unit were deployed at large test markets in parts of the United States and Europe in 1994 and 1995, but the product was canceled shortly thereafter, and was never mass-produced or marketed.
The Apple Interactive Television Box is based upon the Macintosh Quadra 605 or LC 475. Because the box was never marketed, not all specifications have been stated by Apple. It supports MPEG-2 Transport containing ISO11172 (MPEG-1) bit streams, Apple Desktop Bus, RF in and out, S-Video out, RCA audiovideo out, RJ-45 connector for either E1 data stream on PAL devices or T1 data stream on NTSC devices, serial port, and HDI-30 SCSI.[2] Apple intended to offer the AITB with a matching black ADB mouse, keyboard, Apple 300e CD-ROM drive, StyleWriter printer, and one of several styles of remote controls.
The hard drive contains parts of a regular North American Mac OS 7.1.1 with Finder, several sockets for network connection protocols, and customized MPEG1 decoding components for the QuickTime Player software.
