🇯🇵 The Sony NEWS (Network Engineering Workstation) is a series of UNIX-based workstations and servers developed by Sony Corporation. Introduced in 1987, the NEWS series represented Sony's ambitious entry into the high-performance computing market, targeting professionals in engineering, scientific research, and academia.
💾 In the late 1980s, the computing world was rapidly evolving with a growing demand for powerful workstations capable of handling complex tasks. Sony, primarily known for its consumer electronics, ventured into this niche market with the NEWS series to provide high-end workstations for network computing and engineering applications. The initial model, the NEWS NWS-800, was unveiled in 1987. It was designed to compete with established UNIX workstations from companies like Sun Microsystems and Silicon Graphics.
💻 The early Sony NEWS models were based on the MIPS architecture, a series of RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computing) processors known for their performance efficiency. Later models transitioned to other architectures, including the Intel x86 family. The NEWS series ran on a customized version of UNIX, providing a robust and versatile environment for software development, data processing, and scientific computations. The workstations boasted impressive processing power for their time. For instance, the NWS-800 featured a 16.67 MHz R3000A processor and supported up to 24 MB of RAM, which was substantial in the late 1980s.
🖥 High-resolution graphics capabilities were a standout feature of the NEWS series, catering to applications requiring detailed visual representations, such as CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and multimedia development. As the name suggests, network engineering was a core focus. The NEWS workstations were designed with advanced networking capabilities, including support for various networking protocols, which was critical for collaborative engineering projects and research. The machines were equipped with sizable storage options, including SCSI hard drives and support for external storage devices, ensuring ample space for large datasets and software applications.
⚙️ The Sony NEWS workstations found use in numerous specialized fields. They were particularly popular in academic research labs, animation studios, and engineering firms where high computational power and graphical capabilities were essential. Despite their advanced features, the NEWS series faced stiff competition from other established UNIX workstation manufacturers. However, they carved out a niche market due to Sony's reputation for quality and innovation. Over time, the landscape of computing evolved, and the demand for proprietary workstations diminished in favor of more standardized PC-based systems. Sony eventually discontinued the NEWS line, but the series left a lasting impression on the high-performance workstation market.
🌐 The Sony NEWS series represents a fascinating chapter in the history of computing, showcasing Sony's foray into the realm of high-performance workstations. With its robust UNIX environment, advanced graphics, and strong network capabilities, the NEWS series was a testament to Sony's engineering prowess and innovation during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Today, it remains a memorable part of the evolution of workstations, reflecting the dynamic nature of technological advancement.

About the recent acquisition talks of Paramount Global
Status Post #11018: I rather want Skydance to acquire them instead of Sony because number one, if Sony buys Paramount, then chunks of the company could potentially be sold off like Nickelodeon, MTV, Paramount+, CBS etc, number two, I still don't think they were the right company to buy Crunchyroll from Warner Bros. Discovery, given that it led to the Funimation streaming service to shut down and number three, they just need to give up hope on their Spider-Man shared universe and give the rights back to Marvel. Heck, I would've wanted Legendary Entertainment to buy Warner Media than merging with Discovery that caused this mess under David Zaslav.

Buying Digital Media a Scam? It is for PlayStation Users.
Have you ever heard the phrase “caveat emptor?” It’s Latin for “let the buyer beware.” It’s the buyer’s responsibility alone to check the quality and sustainability of the item they have purchased. (Oxford Languages Dictionary, n.d.) This has burned many a person in the digital age we live in. And Sony and PlayStation have now used that very concept to swindle millions of people who purchased…

Crunchyroll’s awful anti consumer practices are made even worse when you realize that they have a stranglehold on anime distribution in the west.
Sure, Sentai Frameworks is still around, but their catalogue of shows pales in comparison to Chruchyroll’s.
It’s kinda insane how many shows CR licenses each season, seriously half of the shows I watched last year were licensed by CR.
As one would expect, because CR ends up licensing out a bunch of shows each season, they start to get lazy when it comes to the localization.
They have just straight up given up when it came to translating signs and episode titles in certain shows.
And because they’re notoriously anti union, all their English dubs feature the same actors from the Dallas area. Which becomes a huge problem with they end up licensing a show that was previously dubbed by a union studio.
Looking at you Mob Psycho 100 Season 3.
Pretty wild how a shitty company like CR managed to conquer the anime market in the west.
Even during the height of their popularity, Funimation didn’t license as many shows as CR. Though to be fair, anime was still pretty niche in the 2000’s and early 2010’s.
But still, the fact that CR doesn’t have that many competitors in the anime market is pretty concerning. As they will continue to double down on their shitty business practices.

Every time the MLP Movie comes up in any context I turn into that Guy At A Party meme “They don’t know DHX walked away from Sony Pictures’ big-money distribution offer so they could preserve the integrity of the series and keep not only the showrunner writing the script but also keep all of the show voice actors on and Daniel Ingram writing the songs, in addition to fighting for the film to remain 2D animated. This cost them an almost-guaranteed comfortable box office success making the Smurfs Movie clone that Sony demanded, instead producing a flawed but beautiful animated movie made by people who cared”
#mlp#mlp FiM#mlp the movie#my little pony#I’ve posted about this several times before lol but I highly recommend looking up the leaked Sony email saga around this movie someday#the Sony exec they had to deal with wrote like a cartoon corporate asshole#obviously just glanced over the script getting character names wrong and everything#saying stuff like ‘This feels like one long episode of a show’ and ‘Why should audiences care about any of these characters’#they also called Rainbow Dash a boy and said they didn’t see how he’d be marketable to little girls lmao#anyway in conclusion yes the movie has a lot of flaws. but to me its forever an act of incredible solidarity in the face of corporate greed

Context: the studio that made Hi-Fi Rush, Ghostwire Tokyo, & The Evil Within (Tango Gameworks) got shut down by Microsoft.

What I am saying is from the perspective of someone raised in the U.S. I’m unaware of what this is like in most other countries and I will be primarily talking about AA & AAA games: the indie scene is thriving
Sucks that we live in a society that discourages passion, creativity, & art unless it directly contributes to lining the pockets of billionaires: this is especially evident when you look at how corporations treat their employees & IPs, work culture, and the U.S education system. There are absolutely amazing games & IPs that are left in the past because they didn’t give the people on top as much money as they hoped for or there are more profitable options, so instead we get an over saturated market generally made for fans of popular IPs, shooters, and action adventure games because those sell the best. This is why a lot of Nintendo’s, Sony’s, and Microsoft’s older IPs never get used anymore: this is why we keep getting the same games, but with a new gimmick and shinier coat of paint. I love shooters and action adventure games, but we need more games that are unique and/or of less popular genres that stick around. Insomniac for example has made great games that are full of creativity and passion such as Sunset Overdrive & Spyro, but now they’re not much more than a glorified Marvel games studio: their new games are good, but it’s all stuff we’ve seen numerous times. We still do get great, soulful games that aren’t left to the sands of time, but there have been less of them as it moves on.

Look at how normies are rewarding corporate greed and hurting gaming. PS5 Pro disc drive is selling on Amazon like hotcakes. 3 days ago it was number TEN in most sold. People are rewarding Sony for their anti-consumerism when they could just get literally any other console, or even a regular vanilla PS5. Sony is profiting off a bad move, so now they will continue to make bad moves. Thanks for nothing, all of you fake-ass gamers.

I tried Horizon Zero Dawn a couple years ago and gave up on it because I found the combat pretty frustrating. I was thinking of giving it another try sometime on my steam deck to see if I like it better there, but Sony apparently made the very consumer friendly move (sarcasm) of delisting the original version to make room for the unnecessary remaster. And I don't think I'll ever buy it now because 1, screw paying that much money for a 7 year old game that was frequently going on sale for $12,and 2, who knows how well it'll run on steam deck compared to the original
