Tolkien Fandom Event Calendar

Recently I’ve received some asks about events/weeks in the Tolkien fandom, so I thought I’d compile a list of those that I know about. This is not exhaustive, and dates are subject to change by the organizers of these events!

Other blogs you can check out are @tolkieneventsblog and @tolkienfandomevents, though I’m not sure how active those are. The @silmarillionwritersguild Discord also has a channel dedicated to signal boosts for all sorts of Tolkien-related & general fandom happenings, which is another excellent way to keep up with fandom goings-on.

3 Things

@naryaflame thanks for tagging me and making me think of three things to share that I'm proud of from 2022...

... which I'm finding surprisingly difficult! I have no regrets, and there are things I'm happy about, yet nothing I'm consciously proud of.

Hmmm, let's see... *goes off and ponders; returns right before bedtime two days later* ...

One thing stands out, and it's a personal rather than fandom thing: learning to let seemingly hurtful or malicious things aimed at me by my mother — who is evidently sliding into dementia — slide themselves. Actually what I'm doing is reinterpreting them as things she's saying to make herself feel better, rather than as things intended to make me feel bad. She's used this for as long as I can remember, she's just far less subtle about it now. I'm not always successful, but when I am she becomes the kinder person she really is, and I think it's her (messed up but aren't we all) way of checking that she's still loved no matter what. (Of course it's a lot more complicated and nuanced than this, but this is just a brief tumblr post after all.)

Another two things that occur to me are connected: the is first allowing myself to let the artists of two of my three adopted Scribbles & Drabbles claims know, the day before reveals, that I was unable to submit their promised fics in time. I had been struggling with unidentified illness for months and was pretty much at the lowest point of my year then. I had allowed myself months to rest, believing I'd recover enough in time, but things worsened. I was going to push myself to force something out, but realised I was allowed to be affected by things affecting me, to be gentle on myself. Which is not an easy thing for me to do. (And for many people, I know! Even — and maybe especially — when we're the ones telling others to put their wellbeing first!)

The third thing is my brain promptly going "fuck that!" and writing ficlets for said adopted Scribbles & Drabbles artworks, with the words for one finally flowing till it was done at 3am, and then starting the other from 5am after a short sleep. (Who needs drugs when one's brain is over-efficient at producing cortisol and adrenalin, and shakes one awake saying "I have words!!! Grab your laptop!"?) Letting others down is anathema to me, and being told (or admitting) that I can't do something only acts as a motivator for me.

(I'm not sure whether the last two are things to be proud of, whether they actually cancel each other other out, or add up to something greater than the sum of their parts!?)

Anyway, that's about the most personal post you're likely to see from me on Tumblr!

27. You’re so beautiful

“You’re so beautiful.”

The words slipped out in a whisper before she could stop herself, and she froze in shock at her own actions.

Helia looked up from his sketchbook that he’d been scribbling in to meet her eyes, his pale and sharp cheeks tinted red.

Flora gaped, cursing herself for blurting those words out. She had been silently watching him draw as they sat across one another on the floor of the library between the shelves.

The light shining through the tall windows reflected against his dark hair so perfectly and the shadows that cast over his features made them appear sharper than usual, as though they were hand-sculpted. His blue eyes had narrowed in concentration as he slaved over the tiniest details in whatever he was drawing, and it seemed that he was unaware that he had been biting his lower lip slightly.

The book she held in her hands had laid open and forgotten as she lost herself in watching Helia, wondering how someone could be so beautiful that the simple action of them sitting in front of her left her feeling warm all over. Until she had to ruin her own moment by speaking her thoughts out loud.

“Flora?”

“Huh?” Was he talking? She had completely gone blank the past few seconds after putting her own foot in her mouth.

“You okay?” Helia leaned forward, a sly smirk playing on his lips. Flora was definitely not okay, and despite her attempts to control her breathing so she wouldn’t give away her racing heart, she was sure her flushed face betrayed her.

“Mmhm!” She hummed, and quickly averted her eyes back to her book to avoid his gaze.

God, this was so embarrassing! What was he going to think of her? He was going to think she was too much. She’d already embarrassed herself by confessing her feelings for him by yelling at him. She’d even gifted him flowers like some crazy schoolgirl. She’d been so forward, and what if he finds that weird? Guys prefer to initiate don’t they? He probably thinks she’s obsessed with him and now he-

“Flora.” Helia whispered, and she looked up to find him smiling shyly at her, his eyes shining in what she hoped wasn’t amusement. He slid a piece of folded paper across the floor where it halted near her thigh. Flora picked it up curiously, and unfolded it slowly.

She gasped when it unfolded to reveal a drawing of her as she read her book sitting across him. Helia had somehow managed to catch the way the sunlight shone through the windows and brought out the highlights in her hair with just pencil and paper. And, there wasn’t a single detail that he seemed to have left out, from the freckles on her nose to the slight furrow of her brows as she read.

You are absolutely, maddeningly beautiful. He’d written at the bottom in his usual cursive handwriting.

Flora looked up at him, blushing furiously as her heart fluttered. Helia looked pleased by her reaction. He tapped his pencil at the top of his book impatiently, before his head darted left and right as though he was looking for someone. But, their aisle was empty which left her wondering what he was doing before Helia got on his knees and leaned forward to softly press his lips against hers.

Flora melted against his mouth. But, Helia broke the kiss and pulled away much too soon. He settled back into his old seat with a smug look on his face while she sat there trying to figure out how to breathe again.

If this was what she got for saying her feelings out loud, then she’ll never keep her thoughts to herself ever again, especially when it came to Helia.

Happy Birthday, Cake Shop!

Today the Continent Cake Shop is 2 years old. Two years of togetherness, of storytelling. Of support and kindness and friendship. We're a very small server, focused more on the stories we want to tell than a specific fandom. We've built a sense of camaraderie and trust in these last few years. There's love and more importantly, communication. We celebrate each other's successes, support each other's stumbles. We've known loss, as much of the world has, and made new friends. Welcomed new family. Celebrated milestones together. Written and arted for an ever growing variety of fandoms. This past year, past two years, have been a beautiful experience of friendship. I wish the members of the Cake Shop another year of love and care, and I wish the wider tumblr audience the benefit and joy of a friendship built not on affability, but on the trust in being seen as you are and loved. 🎶 Do you listen to music while you write? What song have you been playing on loop lately?

Not exactly? I actually don't listen to music very much (can't wear headphones often), but do have songs in my head frequently (and used to sing in a community choir pre-pandemic). Lately my brain has been frequently playing Such Great Heights by the Postal Service (NOT the Iron and Wine cover). A week or so ago something reminded me of the lyrics so it's apparently back in rotation.

💖 What made you start writing?

Hrm. There are a few moments that could count as when I started writing. I pondered this while driving for half an hour, so it turned into a bit of a personal essay.

I was always a bookworm, and in elementary school I loved spelling homework assignments that had us write a short story using X number of spelling words. I'm pretty sure I was writing short stories and poems for fun by age 8, and around 9 is when I started imagining a fantasy world heavily influenced by Narnia (and other favorite books). Back then, I thought I might be a professional writer someday.

In middle school, I started scribbling my first fanfic in journals (often just scraps of dialogue, mostly Star Wars). I think I still managed to write some things for that fantasy world in late middle school/early high school, but by high school I don't think I seriously considered writing as a career (not that I really had a strong alternate calling). From time to time, I still wrote little bits of fanfic that I never posted anywhere. I wrote more poems.

I got heavily into reading fanfic in college since I didn't have easy access to "fun" books. (I'm going to be vague and say I wound up in mostly social science, so I had lots of academic reading with very little fiction for school.) I wrote and posted a ficlet, then started and never finished a short multi-chapter. That unfinished fic hung over my head for years and years. I didn't write poetry anymore. I would sometimes drift off to sleep refining that imaginary world I first dreamed up in elementary school, but didn't actually write more fiction. There were essays and papers (and later mostly memos in a Master's program, though I did cobble together a thesis). Maybe occasionally I'd type the beginning of an idea for a fanfic, but didn't do more with it.

Work involved writing, but not fiction (and I didn't get to do as much writing as I wanted). I tried journaling for a bit, but that fizzled out when I was grieving and kept writing the same thing day after day. There weren't as many scraps of ideas.

Some years later, I started watching The Owl House. I got into it pretty late, so I was bingeing S2 when TTT aired. And then it got stuck in my head. Especially the haircut scene in TTT. For the first time in years, I had the itch to write.

There was still the memory of that unfinished WIP hanging over me, so I decided to go super old school and write a 100 word drabble (the word limit was sacred once upon a time). Then I wrote a few more of those to continue the drabble sequence. And then I posted it. All 600 words.

But then I posted a 2k fic just a couple days later. Then another short fic soon after that. And now I'm just short of 28k posted on AO3 between mid October 2022 and mid January 2023. I know there are far more prolific writers, but that's a lot compared to the nothing I'd been writing for years and years.

That's, um, probably more than what was intended by the ask, but it's been a long, rambling journey getting back into writing fanfic.

ARE YOU STARVED FOR CONTENT?

Do you need more content of your favorite character(s)? Are you always going to writers/artists' inboxes and requesting more of it because you feel like there won't ever be enough content?

Here is a guide on how to encourage writers/artists/graphics creators and other content creators to continue their amazing work.

don't just like our posts, reblog it. tumblr doesn't have an algorithm that suggests posts that people liked on others' dashboards. the only way the posts are going to circulate around and actually reach people who want to see it is when you reblog it for your followers to see. that's how we keep this place alive.

comment on our works! tell them how you felt when you saw it/read it. what kind of thoughts did you have? what were you doing? keysmash only? that's amazing, we love that. any words. "i love (character) so much" or "aojfossfiasjo help" or "I really love this work aaaa" or "bitch you're going to make me cry /pos" are all great. bonus points if you tell us in detail about what you liked about our works!!! like "I really like this phrase here..." or "the symbolism you used is really fitting for (character) because..." we don't just put work out there and say "hey this is amazing everyone should read it mwahaha" no we hope that you genuinely enjoy reading it and hope that we make someone's day. sometimes our confidence goes down in our writing and makes us want to stop but when we see such heartwarming comments, it really helps us with our self esteem.

be nice when you request!! don't just say "(character) + (prompt)" and press send. Say Hi! Say thanks! Where are your manners? Please don't act like you're my best friend who I talk to every day at the lunch table and joke around with- because I don't know you. Congratulate us on milestones if we have one going on. Because that goes a long way in making us feel appreciated in our works. We don't like feeling our work is being not appreciated and when the tags are dry it's going to be the fault of those who never supported their content creators.

INTERACT WITH US !! I cannot stress this enough. We are humans too, we want to be treated like humans, not some sort of authoritative figure or some account that puts out content every so often. We are human, we like interactions, we want to be appreciated not only for our works but also for ourselves. It's fine not to be our best friend or whatever, but one of the reasons people leave this site is because nobody talks to them. we are not some sort of business where you present an order and we give our content out and it just continues. we are humans, we are people, and we do this for free, so at least make it a pleasant experience to be on here.
