I've tried to stay collected about the upcoming administration because my hispanic family is scared enough as it is, but my ma was already dealing with kids asking her if they were going to get tossed out of the country they were born in since November

Like, people are saying that "it's the same old shit nothing new" but everything is new for kids. And beyond policy changes and executive orders assholes are gonna be even more emboldened to let loose their absolutely unacceptable behavior on or around children.

Racism and transphobia and bigotry and the horrors are embedded in the usa's foundations of course, so yeah it's old news, but we need to be better than jaded.

I can still remember when I heard a certain slur for the first time because my abuelo was telling a "funny" story involving a white lady raging at him. All the hispanic boys in my middle & high schools who made the jokes first because it's better to laugh along than to let a guy with a knife know where exactly to hit you, even when you have to degrade yourself and your family. All the girls who'd lean in to the sexy latina stereotype in public and cry in fear for their parents, their siblings, their grandparents, and themselves in private.

I can still remember the absolute ugliness that kids experienced during Trump's first term, by adults and other kids.

Because I was a kid when little white boys were running around wearing red MAGA caps specifically to start shit, since all they really knew was Trump pissed people off and they were too IDubbz pilled and privileged to get it.

I was a kid when my mom woke me to tell me same-sex marriage had been legalized, since I had spent over 2 years out knowing I wanted a wife but would never get one like a boy could, and I was a kid when I was worried it'd be taken away before it could even be real for me.

And, as a kid, it was easy to sense the underlying vitriol from bigots about Obama that bubbled higher and higher until a racist orange won in an election I couldn't even vote in and suddenly got way too much power. Even though I couldn't articulate exactly what was wrong or how it hurt me.

And I didn't really understand the nuances of the actual concrete legislation & policy changes, no matter how much any teen wants to tell you they know exactly how the world runs, but I could understand how the tone shifted into something ugly.

It's easy when white kids won't stop crowing "build the wall" around anyone brown like it's the funniest joke. It's pretty damn instinctual when you're out but only know queer as a slur people only call you if you care about it.

Of course it's not just hispanic kids or queer kids. Trump's vitriol has a blast radius that covers countless scapegoated communities. And of course it's always been bad, but a lot of tiny young people are gonna be feeling all of that fucking bad even more without being able to articulate it or protect themselves.

I don't even know where this is going, I just think about all the kids feeling their parent's fear and their neighbor's hate for the 1st or 3rd or 1000th time and I want to throw up.

I guess I mean watch out for the kids in your life, and the young adults too, no matter whether they might experience bigotry or perpetuate it. Be a safe space. Even if you aren't in a position to tell them what's right, you can embody your morals and show them in everyday actions.

Anyone wearing a pride pin or being openly queer around me moved me to tears as a kid. I never even knew you could be gay and old until a high school teacher near retirement talked about her wife. It fucking shook me to my core knowing I wasn't cursed to die young and scared and alone.

Stomp out the roots of hate before it starts. I know there were a lot of dudes on the redpill pipeline I couldn't have ever helped, but a mentor or family member could have. There's a lot of awful hateful adults who started out as confused kids parroting whatever got them attention.

No one starts out hateful. No one starts out hating themselves. And everyone in a kid's ecosystem can help them grow, even when there is poison in the soil.
