Everything being said here is correct, and I’m going to put in my two cents as a horse person. For context, I’ve been riding since I was 9 (so, 22 years now), I have a bachelor’s degree in Equine Science, I have worked in a lot of different parts of the horse industry, and I own four horses.

The horse industry puts on a good show of being something for the rich - because the most visible parts of the industry are dominated by and therefore only able to be participated in by the rich. Horse racing, three day eventing, etc. In these industries, the people who are visible are the owners, who sometimes don’t even own the whole horse but instead have syndicated the horse so many rich people can all own part of the horse. And while these horses may bring home big pay days and make their owners money, who actually cares for the horses’ needs and loves them? The much lower paid grooms, trainers, riders, etc.

I got to go around to a bunch of the Arabian training facilities in Scottsdale, AZ (the Arabian horse capital of the US) last spring. I saw horses who cost six figures, who had single breeding fees in the five figures, who had earned more ribbons and accolades than seemed possible. The people who took care of them day to day? Often worked 10-12 hr days, 6 days a week, for barely above minimum wage. The money at the top is NOT being spent on the people who care about horses and care for them. An agent who runs a training facility and makes most of her money selling fancy US Arabian horses to the sheikhs of the Middle East complained that “no one wants to put in the work” and that she “wishes she could pay more but half the people don’t even deserve it”.

I worked for an Arabian breeder for whom the horses are a passion project. She doesn’t want her farm to make money at all and rarely sells any horses - she’s invested in preserving a specific bloodline. She doesn’t show her horses and we had to work hard to convince her to let us teach some of them to be ridden. She could drop six to seven figures on whatever whims she wanted to - but we had constant conversations about cutting costs and how much vet bills are and we just can’t afford this or that thing for the horses’ safety and wellbeing. We were never staffed enough to be able to provide for all of the horses’ needs, do all the things the farm owner wanted done, and actually provide training and exercise to the horses.

On the flip side, I also worked for a horse rescue that exclusively takes in law enforcement cases, so the horses coming there were always in very serious, often life threatening danger when they arrived. The staff who provided the day to day care was not paid a living wage and, out of love for the mission and the horses, often sacrificed free time to projects and gave donations from their meager paychecks. The horses got better care than any of the fancy Arabian show barns I went to, and they were absolutely happier and healthier - but the people providing the care weren’t that much better off. Working at the rescue didn’t pay enough to afford to own a horse.

There’s other dynamics at play here. The faces of the different aspects of the industry (racing, breeding, showing, training) tend to be cishet white men and overwhelmingly rich from outside sources (rarely from being successful in the horse industry to start). But the vast majority of participants in the horse industry are women - the people working the low paying jobs, the casual/recreational horse owners, the people running businesses for recreational horse owners, the lower status trainers, the veterinarians, the vet techs, etc. Many of us are queer and/or BIPOC as well. Most of us are at best middle class, if not living paycheck to paycheck in a lot of cases. Many horse owners do not keep their horses at home, and instead board them at someone else’s farm - which may or may not be owned by the people providing care. (The best farm I ever kept my horses at was owned by a rich white business owner who leased the property to the barn manager.)

So yeah, this attitude is GARBAGE.

I understand the stereotype of rich horse people but it's kind of gotten insane that anyone with a horse is now automatically seen as a landed gentry bourgeois so much so that people are straight up calling horses bourgeois creatures and calling for their ABOLISHMENT and even extinction like wtf is wrong with you. Don't let the era of the automobile erase the horses history as a beast of burden for the working class and farmers. Horses belong to the proletariat just as much if not more than the role of rich person's plaything.

Det er jeg helt enig i, jeg bare synes at folk glemmer Kane-saken (sånn generelt) og at folk her blåser Auston-saken opp i skyene som om at det er helt fullstendig krise. Samtidig tenker jeg også at Auston aldri hadde fått den klagen om han ikke var kjent i Scottsdale + dette var en sikkerhetsvakt på jobb, som mest sannsynlig aldri hadde gått ut av bilen sin for konfrontere guttene om hun ikke var sikkerhetsvakt på jobb.

Igjen, jeg prøver ikke å unnskylde Auston’s handlinger. Jeg bare sier at det kunne vært så jævlig mye verre og folk gjør dritt når de er fulle. Jeg kunne sikkert gjort det samme på fylla selv, men jeg kommer unna med det fordi jeg er jente og hele verden vet ikke hvem jeg er. Samtidig er det selvfølgelig noe Auston bør tenke på før han driter på draget, at alle vet hvem han er og at han har et image som idrettsstjerne og forbilde.

For this sculpture, I honed in on my recent experience of using art to encourage Veterans with PTSD to share their stories and establish a new sense of self though healing. PTSD is not limited to those who have been deployed, but can impact anyone as the result of a traumatic experience or encounter. The dramatic converging faces depict the internal battle of those who have PTSD. Their daily experience can be a duality of a suppressed painful past and the attempt to find normality in daily life.
