it only seems fair to start with the most recent recipient of the booker. shuggie bain is a delight. the novel paints a beautiful yet troubled picture of a scottish family torn apart by substance abuse and neglect. shuggie’s love for his mother is stuart’s greatest triumph, gripping until the final page. the novel, personally, only falls short on pace. the start of the novel seems disjointed, and some moments, though dense with emotive prose, seem too distant for the reader to grasp. still, a highly deserving winner. 4/5 ⭐️ #bookstagram #bookerprize #bookerprize2020 #shuggiebain #scottishliterature https://www.instagram.com/p/CKB8FUhF1rC/?igshid=1oq0jru1ehlya

Waverley; or, 'Tis Sixty Years Since by Sir Walter Scott, first edition, one of 1,000 copies (1814). A unicorn, the national animal of Scotland, adorns the spines of this contemporary binding. A symbol of strength, pride, and chivalry, the unicorn was first used by William I on the Scottish royal coat of arms in the 12th century, and later alongside the English lion representing the two countries united under the rule of James I. Set during the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745, Waverley is often considered among scholars to be the first historical novel. Waverley found immediate popularity when first published in 1814; all 1,000 copies of the first edition were sold within two days. #sirwalterscott #waverley #unicorn #finebinding #firstedition #rarebooks #scottishliterature (at Madison Avenue/33rd Street, Downtown Manhattan) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRmXWjXMTHw/?utm_medium=tumblr

Credit to @sothebys Thought lost for a century, the Honresfield Library is a unique treasury of cornerstones of British culture, assembled at the turn of the 20th century. Among the library’s holdings is the most important material by the Brontë sisters to come to light in a generation. The rare pieces open a window onto the short but amazing lives of Charlotte, Emily, Anne and even their brother Branwell. Treasures include a handwritten copy of Emily’s poems, with revisions from Charlotte and the well-loved and annotated Brontë family copy of Bewick’s History of British Birds, the book made famous in the opening pages of Jane Eyre. Scottish literature is also at its heart, with the most important manuscript by Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns, in private hands – a compendium of poems, notes and ideas put together by Burns as an unknown twenty-four year old – and the complete manuscript for Sit Walter Scott’s novel Rob Roy. Further noteworthy lots include Jane Austen first editions, a copy of Don Quixote printed in 1620 for Edward Blounte (the publisher famous for the First Folio of Shakespeare's plays) and an annotated copy of Alfred Lord Tennyson’s poems showing author’s changes from proof printing in his hand. Having re-emerged after almost 100 years in obscurity, the 500 lots will be offered across three auctions, commencing this summer (first auction open for bidding from 2 – 13 July 2021). #SothebysBooks #Bookstagram #Bibliophile #EnglishLiterature #ScottishLiterature #RobertBurns #JaneAusten #WalterScott #EmilyBrontë #CharlotteBrontë #AnneBrontë #BrontëSisters #famouswhendead (at Sotheby's) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPTJArhgdiN/?utm_medium=tumblr

On this day in 1883, Robert Louis Stevenson published his classic pirate novel, “Treasure Island”. And, believe it or not, I didn’t actually know that when I planned this post. I was thinking this morning that I’d gotten a lot of early copies in recently and wouldn’t it be nice to post them on the day they were published. Wonder if it’s today? Maybe it is today. Wikipedia: “Yeah, it’s today”. Lucky me. From left to right: 1913, c1900, c1895. Latter two are illustrated. $27/$45/$60. Scott-Land. After a visit to family in Scotland, broke the journey back down south with a day at Sir Walter Scott's lavishly eccentric passion-project, Abbotsford, in the Scottish Borders. Ivanhoe and The Talisman were two of my favourite books as a child, and I'd long wanted to visit this marvellous Scottish Baronial "flibbertigibbet of a house", as Scott called it, built on the proceeds of his novels and filled with arms, armour, antiquarian oddments and curiosities, and of course books, wonderful books. The library in particular is testament to a marvellously magpie mind: the titles range from books on Scottish history to folklore and the occult, Rosicrucianism, witchcraft, architecture, horticulture, geography, chivalry, ballads and fairytales. (Speaking of fairy tales, I felt like I'd stepped into one in the drawing room, Lady Scott's domain, with its hand-painted Chinese wallpaper and harp music playing softly in the background as crystal chandelier fronds twinkled in the afternoon light...) #abbotsford #sirwalterscott #scotland #scottishborders #scottishbaronial #countryhouse #romanticism #scottishliterature #waverleynovels #ivanhoe #antiquarianism #chivalry #scottishhistory #ballads #tales #occult #autumnjourneys #books #chandeliers #lordbyron #chinesewallpaper #literarypilgrimage https://www.instagram.com/p/B3pQfCfngqG/?igshid=1x31fsyxfa3cf

well! that was a ride. the novel is split into two stories: george, a girl in the 1960s who is distraught by the recent death of her mother, and francescho, a gender fluid artist in the 1460s. smith (very cleverly) had ‘how to be both’ published so that the novel begins in separate places for readers, depending on their edition. my personal copy started with george’s story. i loved george’s plot line and the sexual frustration betwixt her and H. francescho’s story was interesting, but it did not grip me - if the narratives had been the other way, there is a chance i would’ve put this down and never finished it. it’s an excellent piece of literature, but relies too heavily on blurring the lines of reality and fiction to be coherent. 3.5/5 ⭐️ #book #books #bookstagram #ukbookstagram #alismith #howtobeboth #scotland #scottishliterature #manbooker #goldsmithsprize #bookoftheyear #fiction #contemporaryfiction #queerliterature https://www.instagram.com/p/CLcnII1FNJc/?igshid=10vz2gb0wtanx

This week I’ve been pointing to some friends who’ve allowed me to work hell with their appearance. I mostly create characters from my imagination but with some characters I like to use photo reference. This can bring unexpected depth to a scene. It mixes the cartoon line and a more weighty reality in a way I find interesting. But above all it’s amusing to me to see a real person move through my panels. With comics I make my own films in a sense, with my set design, costume and actors. I like to walk that line of storytelling. In Marc’s case I gave him piercing blue eyes and drew him as a much older man. The character he portrays is a very interesting one to me, and although he appears fleetingly he is fundamental to the story. I’ll leave it up to the reader to decide who or what this character is. Marc is a superb #actor and you can learn more about his work on his #instagram page here-> @marcpouhe . The story is my adaptation of R L Stevenson’s ‘Thrawn Janet’ -my favourite ‘ghost story’....because it’s much more than that! You can read the story now with ‘THE BOODA COLLECTION’ Just copy the link below to make a...(as Aces puts it...) ‘...direct purchase of this special collection of comics by Stewart Kenneth Moore for Aces Weekly! Send £2.99, $4.00, or €3.49 directly to Paypal via the account [email protected] with the note, Booda Bunch, and this fine, fabulous collection of 83 pages will be winging its way to you asap, with access password included!’ https://www.acesweekly.co.uk/Back-issues. @rlstevensonlibrary #artistsoninstagram #comics #history #horror #actorsoninstagram #acting #stagecraft #history #scottishliterature https://www.instagram.com/p/CHSRqX1LNSw/?igshid=1xi6793l7mylx

Finished: "Redgauntlet" by Sir Walter Scott. Following the adventures of a young man who discovers family ties to an avid and unwavering Jacobite and his best friend, a new lawyer with a hopelessly deluded client, the novel's climax lies in an attempt to rouse another rebellion aiming to place Bonnie Prince Charlie on the throne. Now I'm starting Sir Walter Scott's "Kenilworth," from the same series, but which takes place significantly earlier than "Redgauntlet." #nofilter #noedit #book #books #bookstagram #reader #reading #bookworm #literature #history #scottishliterature #redgauntlet #sirwalterscott #thewaverleynovels https://www.instagram.com/p/BuJad8khwud/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=5oh7sa6b1tfs
