Today's post is about going on a literary pilgrimage. I could post about my trip to the library this morning but I've decided to post about my trip to Nevada last year instead. The whole reason I wanted to go was because of Hunter. S. Thompson. I read Hells Angels and A savage journey to the heart of the American dream in my teens and I never got over the passion with which this gonzo journalist wrote. He is vulgar, furious, charming and unashamedly honest. All styles I am endeavouring to recreate in my own book series. Somehow he managed to cram all of his giant persona into his work and then some and because of how deeply his words touched me I dreamed of visiting sin city for myself someday for a very long time and last year I embarked on that #literarypilgrimage for myself. I went to #redrockcanyon for a hike, over to #jeandrylake and even walked through the neon boneyard and touched the #stardust signage at the #neonmuseum and yes I even did a bit of gambling at the #Flamingocasino although it wasn't the same one that bugsy became infamous for it was still a heap of fun. Did I also partake in a psychedelic road trip? Scott-Land. After a visit to family in Scotland, broke the journey back down south with a day at Sir Walter Scott's lavishly eccentric passion-project, Abbotsford, in the Scottish Borders. Ivanhoe and The Talisman were two of my favourite books as a child, and I'd long wanted to visit this marvellous Scottish Baronial "flibbertigibbet of a house", as Scott called it, built on the proceeds of his novels and filled with arms, armour, antiquarian oddments and curiosities, and of course books, wonderful books. The library in particular is testament to a marvellously magpie mind: the titles range from books on Scottish history to folklore and the occult, Rosicrucianism, witchcraft, architecture, horticulture, geography, chivalry, ballads and fairytales.
