Scottish Wildcats from British wildlife centre
These are last years adolescents, hard to take good photos with the bars in the way. They came out for a feeding/talk. They were eating chicken chicks. There was four in one enclosure.
There were younger kittens in an adjacent enclosure. one kitten was brave enough to approach an adolescent close to the bars. The kittens came out after the feeding talk. the bars were at a bad angle and appear harsher in the photos.
Overall I was super happy to see living Scottish wildcats (I had seen many taxidermy specimens). it had been my dream for a long time. The photos aren't terrible and I saw kittens!!! I was interested to hear they can take down Muntjacs (one was recorded to take down a roe deer). These are not what Domestic cats are descended from (that is the African wildcat, Felis lybica). But they did remind me of little tabby cats and can hybridise. They used to native to all of the British isles. But now have small strongholds in Scotland. The kittens from here are released in programs when they are old enough. They are critically endangered. Threatened by hybridisation with free roaming domestics, habitat loss and were once prosecuted.
@mekanikaltrifle @robotslenderman @amber-tortoiseshell @lepurcinus @felinefractious finally got round to uploading my camera photos of the Scottish wildcats! not the best photos due to bars but I'm happy. also kittens!!!!

Scottish Wild Cat Kittens
Four rare and endangered wildcat kittens born in Scottish zoo (2020)
"Scottish wildcats are a European protected species and the only native member of cat family still found wild in UK."
"A survey carried out between 2015 and 2018 by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) found that in the wild only 20 per cent of wildcats are fully wildcat, while the remaining 80 per cent were cross-breeds or entirely domestic."

Not me sweating looking at the Scottish wildcats in canon warriors and the noncanon Scottish wildcats I put in my own fanfic and knowing how non canon they are now…
#for one thing like in real life my Scottish wildcats are solitary#they don’t use the same naming conventions#one character abandons names altogether because her name is just dependent on context#so her kitten calls her mother but Mistpaw calls her Guide and her mate calls her ‘mate’#I just think making Scottish wildcats just tabby warriors 2.0 is weird#that’s not how they work#warriors#ivypools heart spoilers#spoilers#warriors spoilers

Hi, I'm an Australian living in Ireland. I've never lived in a country that has rabies. Keep your cats indoors.
Even in countries that don't have rabies there's FIV, FeLV, panleukopaenia, dogs, and fucking cars. Even in countries that don't have rabies, outdoor cats kill wildlife at a devastating pace without you even knowing about it. Even in countries without rabies, cats displace native small carnivores. Even in countries without rabies, displacement by and/or interbreeding with domestic cats drives native wildcat species to extinction. Even in countries without rabies, other carnivores opportunistically prey on cats. Even in countries without rabies, so-called working cats kill more wildlife than they do mice and rats. Even in countries without rabies cats can get lost or severely injured or kidnapped or go feral. Even in countries without rabies the average lifespan of an outdoor cat is about 3 years vs about 15 indoors.
Hope this helps :)
I've been reading so much about rabies and cats and there are so few cat owners who keep their cats up to date on rabies vaccinations and buds please keep your kitty's jabs up-to-date and please please please keep your cats inside and please treat any cat with an unknown vaccination history as a wild animal and don't try to touch it or pet it or catch it.
The most recent survivor of the Milwaukee protocol is an 8 year old girl who contacted rabies through scratches from feral cats that lived in a colony at her school.
Don't touch strange cats even if they're friendly, and teach your kids not to touch strange cats either. (For that matter teach your kids not to touch strange dogs either, but decades of stray eradication and mandatory vaccines means that the US is one of the few places in the world where cats are more likely to be rabid than dogs)
Also did you know that there's one case of transplant-acquired rabies recorded in the US? The recipient got a kidney from a donor who died in an accident and nobody was aware the donor had rabies. The recipient died of rabies, which is a bit of an extreme flavor of graft failure if you ask me. Terrifying!
Anyway. If you, too, want to have nightmares about rabies you can search my website (www.ms-demeanor.com) for "keep your fucking cat indoors" and scroll to the section on rabies and read some nightmare fuel (like the case report on the family that moved across 3 states with their 13 barn cats, unaware that one was incubating rabies).
Did you know that in 1994, 665 people in New Hampshire had to be given post exposure prophylaxis for rabies because of one infected kitten that had contact with a racoon before being brought to a pet store?
The only way animals are tested for rabies is to examine their brain tissue. The animal is killed in order to do this. If your pet is exposed to rabies they stand a much, much, much better chance of being quarantined instead of being euthanized for testing if you have kept their vaccinations current.
Please keep your pets' vaccinations up to date, and please keep your cat indoors. There's a risk of exposure even for indoor cats, so make sure they've got their shots.
#dear diary#US chauvanism makes my neck go big but rabies is far from the only reason to keep cats indoors#''oh but my outdoor cat lived to 13'' yeah now think about how many kittens die unnecessarily to drag that average down#''no it's fine there's no wildlife around here haha'' gee I wonder why that might be#and since I know everyone's been hype about the new Scottish Wildcat kittens this week#I'm gonna go ahead and depress everyone by introducing you all to the concept of genomic extinction#interbreeding with domestic cats has been a huge HUGE problem for Scottish Wildcat conservation#wild populations now have up to 74% domestic cat DNA and even captive populations have up to 18%#the releases are basically funding-bait#which is cool dgmw bc it goes to conserving the entire native ecosystem with the wildcat as a mascot#but at this point it may be too late we may not be able to save the Scottish Wildcat bc of outdoor and feral cats

Scottish Wildcat and Scottish Wildkittens. Once widespread across Great Britain, this population of European wildcats is now only found in northern and eastern Scotland. They’re threatened by habitat loss, hunting, and hybridized with domestic cats.
This is gonna be the postcard for February’s Creature Mail!
[ID: an illustration of a serious-looking wildcat on a fallen log. Two kittens are cuddling in the crook of a branch below her. The background is a field at night, with snow falling. End.]

ᗪ乇爪ㄖ刀 丂ㄥ卂丫乇尺 匚卂ㄒ丂
———••———————••———————••———
Genre: fluff
Warnings: none
Characters: Gyomei, Muichiro, Tanjiro, Inosuke, Zenitsu and Genya.
Notes: I'm basing them off the cats breed personalities not really looks.
———••———————••———————••———
Part 2, 3, 1
——••————••——
Gyomei is a…
Norwegian forest cat: As you were about to leave for work, something caught your attention near the bushes—a large animal lying still. Curiosity and concern got the best of you, so you carefully approached. When you got close enough, the animal sprang up defensively, and to your surprise, it was a cat—a large one at that. Gyomei, as you’d later name him, raised his guard instantly but made no moves to attack.
Crouching down, you extended your hand gently, allowing him to approach on his own terms. You noticed the way he sniffed the ground cautiously, his ears perking up at every sound. His coat was dirty, and his unusual eye color stood out, making you realize he must be another stray. Though part of you wanted to take him in immediately, you decided to leave him be for now, resolving that if he was still there when you returned from work, you’d take him in.
Hours later, you came back, and to your surprise, there he was—waiting patiently in the same spot. With nothing visibly wrong with him, and his quiet demeanor drawing you in, you welcomed Gyomei into your home, making him another addition to your ever-growing family of cats.
——••————••——
Muchiro is a…
Ragdoll: Your friend came to you one day, holding a small cat in her arms—Muichiro. She told you how she had rescued him after a terrible dog attack. Sadly, Muichiro’s brother hadn’t survived the encounter. The little cat had been through so much and needed a home, a place where he could feel safe again. Without hesitation, you accepted him into your care, vowing to give him the love and comfort he deserved after such a tragic ordeal.
——••————••——
Tanjiro and Nezuko are…
Abyssinian(nezuko would just be a kitten verison): At another pet shelter, you found yourself looking through the cages of adorable cats when your eyes landed on Nezuko. She was small and undeniably cute, so you gently took her out, holding her against your chest as you petted her. She immediately relaxed into your touch, clearly enjoying the affection.
What you didn’t notice at first was another cat, Tanjiro, in the same cage. He slowly approached, sniffing you curiously before giving your hand a small lick and placing a paw on your arm, as if asking to be included. It was obvious they were siblings, you really did only plan to take one home but there was no way you could adopt just one without the other. Besides, Tanjiro wouldn’t have let you take Nezuko without him anyway. So, with a warm smile, you decided to adopt both, bringing them home to join your growing family.
——••————••——
Zenitsu is a…
Birman: You met Zenitsu while working in your room, completely focused on your task. However, you were suddenly pulled from your concentration by the sound of distressed meows coming from outside. Glancing up towards your window, you spotted a cat stuck in the tree just outside.
Without hesitation, you got up and opened your window, leaning out slightly as you tried to coax the cat toward you. It didn’t take long for Zenitsu to notice you. Surprisingly, after just a moment of hesitation, he jumped right into your arms, catching you off guard.
As soon as you caught him, Zenitsu snuggled into you, clinging tightly and letting out a flurry of relieved meows. It was clear he wasn’t going to let go anytime soon, and with that, Zenitsu became another member of your growing cat family.
——••————••——
Inosuke is a…
Scottish wildcat: You were lounging on the couch, relaxing, when you started hearing a strange banging noise. At first, you brushed it off as your imagination, but after a minute, it didn’t stop. The sound came and went, echoing through the house, and it seemed to be coming from the kitchen. Slightly concerned, you got up and cautiously walked toward the sound, just in case it was an intruder.
When you reached the kitchen, you saw your other cats all staring out the sliding door, their attention fixed on something outside. Following their gaze, you looked out the door and saw… a cat. Not just any cat, but one that was ramming its head against your sliding door with determination. The cat, Inosuke, would run a few feet back, then charge forward, headbutting the door like he was trying to break through.
You stared at the odd sight for a few more moments, not sure whether to laugh or be concerned. Eventually, you decided to open the door. As soon as it slid open, Inosuke barreled right in, running around your house like a whirlwind, tracking dirt all over the floor. You sighed but couldn’t help but smile at the chaotic energy he brought with him.
——••————••——
Genya is a…
American short hair: While sitting in the park, you noticed a group of kids harassing a cat, poking at the poor thing and making it flinch. Without hesitation, you stepped in, sternly telling the kids to leave. Once they were gone, you turned your attention to the frightened cat, who gazed up at you defensively, his body tense and wary. You smiled softly, crouching down to make yourself appear less threatening.
You had an idea and decided to take a chance. After leaving the cat—whom you’d later name Genya—hoping he’d stay put, you rushed off to a nearby store. When you returned a few minutes later with a can of cat food, you were relieved to see that Genya was still there, though hiding cautiously in the bushes. Opening the can, you placed it gently on the ground and backed up a little.
Slowly but surely, Genya emerged from the bushes, drawn by the scent of food. As he ate, you carefully reached out, gently stroking his back. To your relief, he didn’t pull away, and after a little more time, he trusted you enough to let you take him home, becoming yet another cherished member of your feline family.

Everybody, pay attention. There is important kitten news
These are scottish wildcat kittens. They are a species functionally extinct in the wild and wholly dependant on captive breeding right now to survive (ICUN red list - critically endangered). Eleven kittens have been born in four litters in captivity so far this year. In a species this rare, that's massive. They hope to release 20 kittens in the next 2 years.

We’re saving Britain’s RAREST mammal… The fiesty Scottish wildcat! 🐱 Did you know that there are fewer than 100 Scottish wildcats remaining 😮 So that’s why we joined forces with @saveourwildcats and @rzssofficial to help boost their numbers... and this year our efforts have paid off as 19 wildcats were released into Cairngorms National Park in Scotland 🏴 Swipe and watch the amazing moment two critically endangered wildcat kittens, born in the wild, are spotted for the first time. It’s incredible to see these fierce, fluffy hunters now thriving 💚

should i add a section in the scottish wildcat wikipedia talk page talking about the lack of images focused on identification and comparison to wildcat hybrids and domestic cats. or would that be weird.
all the images on the wikipedia page are all really cute because they're all scottish wildcats or kittens😭 but there isn't any useful images that actually help with identification!! or support the characteristics section with an actual diagram!!!
#scottish wildcat#on the one hand: it's really bugging me because although the images look cute they're not providing any info in terms of identification#on the other hand: i do not usually edit wikipedia articles and i am a very big novice and also i have lots of anxiety#i found three diagrams that clearly show the differences but idk what copyright they're under😭😭#anyone who has experience in wikipedia editing PLEASE give me advice#wikipedia

Adorable Scottish Wildcat Kittens Mark “Major Milestone” For Conserving Critically Endangered Cuties
In a major first for a project aiming to restore the population of wildcats in Scotland, at least two females have given birth in the wild – and the footage of their kittens is as “awwww”-inducing as you’d expect. Last year, 19 captive-bred wildcats were released into Scotland’s Cairngorms National Park by Saving Wildcats, a […]
