The Groundwork Collaborative's leader also said that "the Department of Justice should criminally prosecute Scott Sheffield," the former Pioneer CEO whom the FTC blocked from joining ExxonMobil's board.
Groundwork Collaborative executive director Lindsay Owens on Tuesday responded to U.S. government allegations of fossil fuel industry price fixing with calls for federal prosecution and congressional action to return money to the American public.
"Americans have been working harder and harder to cover rising energy costs, with the understanding that supply chain snags and geopolitical forces were keeping prices high," Owens said. "Now the Federal Trade Commission has uncovered the real source behind the price at the pump: collusion."
"The Department of Justice should criminally prosecute Scott Sheffield and Congress should tax back the industry's windfall profits and issue every American a refund," she added, referring to Pioneer Natural Resources' founder and longtime CEO.
Owens' statement came after members of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) declined to contest ExxonMobil's controversial $64.5 billion acquisition of Pioneer—which was completed Friday—but approved a consent order barring Sheffield from serving on Exxon's board of directors or as an adviser to the fossil fuel giant.
"This complaint is a wake-up call about the dangerous consolidation of Big Oil's economic and political power."
The FTC voted 3-2 to accept the order and place related documents on the record for public comment. Citing communications including in-person meetings, public statements, text messages, and WhatsApp conversations, a commission complaint accuses Sheffield of trying to collude with the representatives of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and OPEC+.
"Mr. Sheffield's past conduct makes it crystal clear that he should be nowhere near Exxon's boardroom. American consumers shouldn't pay unfair prices at the pump simply to pad a corporate executive's pocketbook," said Kyle Mach, deputy director of the FTC's Bureau of Competition. "The FTC will remain vigilant in its enforcement efforts to protect competition in these vital markets."
Pioneer toldFortune that the company and its founder "believe that the FTC's complaint reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of the U.S. and global oil markets and misreads the nature and intent of Mr. Sheffield's actions," but neither party would take "any steps to prevent the merger from closing."
ExxonMobil "learned of the FTC's allegations regarding Sheffield from the agency and said in a statement that they are 'entirely inconsistent with how we do business,'" according to Fortune. "Exxon has agreed to the terms of the consent decree," which also "prohibits the oil giant from appointing any Pioneer employee or director to its board for five years."
Still, since the FTC's allegations were initially reported by The Wall Street Journal last week and then confirmed with the complaint's release, demands for additional action by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and Congress have mounted.
Tumblr media
Cassidy DiPaola, Fossil Free Media's director of communications, on Monday called the complaint "explosive" and said that Democrats "must respond with bold action to hold this rogue industry accountable," including:
Aggressive congressional and DOJ investigations into the full extent of Big Oil's price fixing;
A windfall profits tax to claw back ill-gotten gains; and
End taxpayer subsidies for oil and gas.
"But accountability is just the first step. This complaint is a wake-up call about the dangerous consolidation of Big Oil's economic and political power. We can't let them use megamergers to entrench their control and crush clean energy competition," she stressed. "Ultimately, this is about the future we choose: One where we remain at the mercy of Big Oil's greed and destruction, or one where clean, democratically controlled energy powers our communities. It's time to make the right choice."
Tumblr media
In response to the Journal's reporting, Tyson Slocum, director of Public Citizen's Energy Program, similarly said that "Congress must immediately hold hearings on Big Oil's alleged collusion with OPEC to raise gasoline prices for Americans."
"Congress must not only investigate Pioneer's alleged role in conspiring with OPEC, but whether there existed a broader conspiracy by U.S. oil companies to collude with OPEC nations," he argued. "Big Oil must be held accountable for any conspiracy by or among American oil companies and OPEC members."
The reporting was notably published on the same day as the U.S. Senate Budget Committee's hearing about a nearly three-year investigation into fossil fuel companies and trade groups' decadeslong "campaign of deception and distraction," which has evolved from denying the planet-heating impact of their products to pretending to be part of the solution to the climate emergency.
"The joint report and documents we discovered show how, time and again, the biggest oil and gas corporations say one thing for the purposes of public consumption but do something completely different to protect their profits," Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), the ranking member on the House Oversight Committee, testified during the hearing. "Company officials will admit the terrifying reality of their business model behind closed doors but say something entirely different, false, and soothing to the public."

Match Review: Sheffield United 1-2 Manchester United
A scrappy game in the aftermath of the tragic news that Sir Bobby Charlton had passed away aged 86 was not what fans would have wanted, but thankfully the Red Devils could honour the great man's memory with a crucial win.
Tumblr media
Bramhall Lane played host to a tale of two halves. In the first, Manchester United were dire; devoid of composure, creativity, and most importantly control. We didn't retain possession or dictate the game. It was so bad that the official United highlights show McTominay's goal - a tidy takedown and finish, in all fairness - as the first of the match highlights. It came in the 28th minute. It's wild that there was nothing of note that United did in 27 minutes of gameplay.
In classic United fashion, no sooner had we taken the lead than we gave it away; a handball from McTominay gave Sheffield a penalty and Oli McBurnie banged home a good finish. Special mention to Andre Onana who got very close to saving it, but Harry Kane would have been proud of McBurnie's set piece. A top drawer penalty.
Tumblr media
There were two big disappointments within United's ranks. Bruno Fernandes was more wasteful than is within his remit as the creative attacking midfielder. There's gambling on a chance, and then there's sloppy passing around the midfield that completely collapses our possession play.
The other was Scott McTominay. He's scored 3 in 2 for United, and I believe he is our top league scorer this season - only behind Casemiro for all competitions. He excels in attacking opportunities and is something of a wildcard, but his weakness is possession football - in the same way Harry Maguire struggles with a high defensive line. McTominay isn't a metronome like Amrabat, or a line-breaker like Eriksen. He shies away from the ball. Players like Hannibal and Mainoo will supplant him from the squad in due course, but in the meantime Erik Ten Hag and his coaching team have a challenge on their hands to ensure that they don't risk United's fluidity by rewarding players for fluke moments - such as McTominay's winners. I do like the guy, and I'm happy to have him in as a squad player, but I know he wants more. I just hope he has a good campaign for United, to secure himself a favourable move away next summer.
Tumblr media
The second half wasn't glorious football, but it was what the first half should have been - before a team talk at HT sharpens it up.
United were more ambitious. They retained the ball better thanks to fewer weird mistakes, and they were more aggressive going forward. Rashford was unlucky to not score, dragging a great chance wide of the far post. Amrabat hit the crossbar too, denying him a first United goal. The standout was a moment of magic that echoed the likes of Charlton and Beckham, with Diogo Dalot whipping home a top corner curling shot from 25 yards to uproar from the away end.
Truthfully it should have been more too. Martial and Garnacho mistimed a counter attack to flag offside, and Bruno and Martial misunderstood movements and also tripped the offside trap. If these moments can be erased, and a bit of luck guides the Amrabat goal in, suddenly we're looking at a 5-1 slapdown of Sheffield United.
Tumblr media
That brings us to the point at hand though: we've not clicked, not yet. These results are very achievable based on the talents available to Ten Hag, but for some reason players haven't quite found their groove. Perhaps it's the injuries, perhaps it was the pre-season workload.
Thankfully players are returning. Harry Maguire has had three good games on the bounce. Garnacho's finding form. Amrabat unsurprisingly looks far better in CM than deputising at LB. With any of our LBs back I think United will be far more reliable, but there are so many 'what ifs'. What if Mainoo's pre-season form flattered to deceive, ala Andreas Pereira? What if Mason Mount doesn't fit in to the system? What if Onana doesn't regain his form?
Until United can build a run of form, every game's a "must win" or a "big test". 2 defeats from 2 in the Champions League group stage means Tuesday vs Copenhagen is though. We must win or we're not even looking at the Europa League, we're just dusted, and that's embarrassing to another level. Fortunately it's a very achievable victory. I just hope Mason Mount starts over McTominay to give us some more vibrancy and spark in our passing and vision.

Dearthworms are Sheffield, England band who are releasing their album "Sapsucker" on small, Sheffield-based label Redundant Span Records.
This is loud, sometimes melodic post punk. I can't help but think of this as a cross between Art Brut, The Wedding Present, Scott & Charlene's Wedding and somehow Native Cats. I've thought about this odd trio of comparisons, but it works (at least for me)

Marking the 40th anniversary of the Miner’s Strike, the 10th anniversary of the film’s release, and the beginning of Pride Month, Showroom Cinema is delighted to return Pride to the big screen for a very special screening.
Set in the summer of 1984 – Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is on strike. At the Gay Pride March in London, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. But there is a problem. The Union seems embarrassed to receive their support.
But the activists are not deterred. They decide to ignore the Union and go direct to the miners. They identify a mining village in deepest Wales and set off in a mini bus to make their donation in person. And so begins the extraordinary story of two seemingly alien communities who form a surprising and ultimately triumphant partnership.
This screening is followed by a Q&A with Mike Jackson, co-founder of Lesbians & Gays Support the Miners, who is played by Joe Gilgun in Pride.'

An open letter to whoever wants to read it...
I don't expect anyone to read this, I just wanted to get my feelings off my chest. I also dont expect anyone to agree with me so don't start having a go. This is genuinely me trying to process my feelings.
I am so disappointed in Alex. And this is actually just a reflection of my own expectations. I was so proud back in May when Louise had tried to allude in her stories that they were on holidays, only for Alex to rock up in London a couple of days later with Miles in their matching jackets at the Scott Walker concert. He looked so happy and relaxed, and I suppose my inner shipper kicked in and I hoped he was finally sticking two fingers up at what I think has become a bearding narrative.
There has been no sign of Louise during the UK tour - even Sheffield which was attended by friends and family and surely after 5 years together she should be considered family. And it wasn’t as if she had any commitments. It seemed she was just wandering around Paris taking pictures and getting her hair cut.
Miles on the other hand has been behaving like someone who is loved up, sharing romantic songs and even called Alex a sexy motherf*ckr on live radio. I was living in my own stupid hope that they were slowly preparing to come out. Or at the least the whole Louise thing was over and we could draw our own assumptions. Especially seeing as yesterday Miles posted a video of him on the Eurostar saying he was going back to London and put the two turtle emojis.
Then today we get a post from Louise declaring how she was getting the star treatment on the Eurostar, and a caption saying something like baby I miss you I want to kiss you. Which brought me back down to earth with a bump. The shit charade is still on. And lucky me...I will be there in London to witness it. Alex will probably be on edge like he was when she was in Paris and fuck up. But of course everyone will think it's romantic and cute.
I disappointed in him not having the courage to put an end to this.
But maybe I am more disappointed in myself. I am usually a cynical person but the love between Miles and Alex seems so romantic, and Miles is so sweet, he deserves happiness. But maybe I really have just been shipping two men who once loved each other but are now happy just being friends.
So I don't know why I feel so miserable. They're all strangers. I like to think of myself as a feminist, but there is still part of me who like fairy tales with happy endings and I created my own Milex fairy tale.
But I still can't help but be cynical. Glastonbury is coming up and I have a strong feeling Miles will come on for 505, so of course let's make sure for this week Alex is seen out in London with the girlfriend, taking photos with fans who can go on how lovely she is blah blah to keep up the hetero narrative so when Miles comes on stage...well it's just two old friends.
Sorry for the ramble. Please just scroll on. I just wanted to get this off my chest.

COCKER: Steve started laughing and said, “It sounds like [Emerson, Lake and Palmer’s version of] ‘Fanfare For The Common Man’.” I always thought the word “common” was an interesting thing. It would be used in “Fanfare For The Common Man” as this idea of the noble savage, whereas it was a real insult in Sheffield to call someone “common”. That set off memories of this girl that I met at college. She wanted to go and live in Hackney and be with the common people. She was from a well-to-do background, and there was me explaining that that would never work. I hated all that cobblers you got in films and magazines in which posh people would “slum it” for a while. Once I got that narrative in my head it was very easy to write, lyrically. CANDIDA DOYLE: Jarvis’ neck would have to be on the line before he would write the words. And singing them would be a drunken affair, hiding behind a door. That went right up to our last LP. Scott Walker tried to talk him out of it. He just found it very personal. COCKER: Part of the tension in that song is that I might have been repelled by what she was saying, but I was sexually attracted to her and wanted to cop off with her. I never did make a move. But I changed the song so she was attracted to me and wanted to sleep with me. Which was, you know, a lie. It was an anthem.

My 91-year-old mother still remembers him. He was always the center of attention. Everyone loved to hear his stories. I posted this last year, but there is an update his son Scott Brown is getting ready to publish his father‘s memoirs. I can’t wait to read it again. I did receive a sneak peek at the book and wrote a review for him.
He recalls the details of severalmissions as if it were yesterday. Some of Colonel Brown’s memories, "Before takeoff, the complete mission (mission track, sensor on-oft times, lat/long positions, fuel status, etc.) would be programmed (uploaded) into the SR's onboard computer system).
One really great thing we also had was a system called the ANS (astro-inertial navigation system) which gave you a three-dimensional fix in the sky within feet of your actual position. Thus, no more manual celestial shots.
The ANS was so sensitive that on a clear day while taxiing for takeoff, the system would start tracking stars and updating itself! On this mission, I took off from Kadena and contacted the waiting tanker at 25,000 feet to take on a full fuel load. After disconnecting, I selected maximum afterburner and started my climb to altitude. We were in the middle of some thunderstorms and did not climb out on top until we reached 50,000 feet."
After Brown’s, SR 71 was repaired at Takhli…
"I cranked the engines, taxied out to the main runway, and made a max burner takeoff. As I cleared the runway, I pointed my nose almost straight up, and, by the way, that wasn't the normal way to take off.😁
Takhli just happened to be home of the 355th Tactical Fighter Wing and wanted to show the fighter guys just what a reconnaissance aircraft could do. I must admit, it was impressive!
WARREN THOMPSON wrote this article in 2010.
I paraphrased parts of it.
Thank you to Cindy Westerman
