From the fluff: 9, 14, and 15?
9. “Sleep over? Please?”14. “Am I your lockscreen?” “You weren’t supposed to see that.”15. “I missed you so much.”
“Missed you,” she mumbles, and she doesn’t have to say any more than that, because Adora knows. She always does.
9. “Sleep over? Please?”
Despite all the time that has passed, Catra notices that Adora’s room is just the same when she eases herself through the unlocked window. Adora herself is lying in bed, limbs splayed out as she stares at the ceiling. She turns her head and offers Catra a weak little smile when she sees her, lifting a hand to quietly call her over. Catra comes as if compelled—and perhaps she is, she can’t help thinking—and curls up by Adora’s side, snuggling into her and breathing in her familiar smell.
“Missed you,” she mumbles, and she doesn’t have to say any more than that, because Adora knows. She always does.
“I missed you too,” Adora whispers back, just as quiet, just as vulnerable. Her hand comes down to card through Catra’s hair, nails gently scratching at her scalp just the way she likes best. “It’s been no fun being cooped up in here with no company.”
“I know, I just…” Catra untucks her face from Adora’s side, peering up at her to take in the new electric blue of her eyes. “You know how I feel about…”
“Magic,” Adora continues. Her voice is carefully left blank, and Catra matches it with an easy, forced nod. She can see the magic in the brightness of Adora’s eyes, shining even in the dark. And it’s Adora, it’s just Adora, who she’s grown up with and cared for and loved, but—
“Magic,” she parrots back.
They both know how she feels about magic. Even just being this close, Catra can feel Adora’s untamed magic pricking at her skin, twisting and rubbing deep against all of the places that no one is meant to see. Not even Adora.
Suddenly overwhelmed, Catra sits up, looking anywhere but at Adora’s face as she eases herself off of the bed. “I…I should go, I’m sorry, I—”
Adora doesn’t reach out, doesn’t raise her voice. Doesn’t reach out with her magic to bind her there—all she does is tilt her head a little and whisper, “Please stay. Sleep over, please?” and it is not a spell, the magic crackles in her eyes but lays dormant—and Catra would know, has felt the burn and ache of magic so many times before—but Catra almost wishes that it were, because at least then, she could justify the way she so easily bends to Adora’s will and climbs back into bed to curl up at her side like she belongs there.
14. “Am I your lockscreen?” “You weren’t supposed to see that.”
Adora wakes up with a start as Catra’s phone buzzes; Catra makes a disgruntled noise and rolls over, burying her face in the pillow and groaning when Adora moves away to fumble blindly for it. “Ignore it, it’s probably just Scorpia,” she mumbles, still half-asleep. Adora does not ignore it, squinting at the screen and huffing out a laugh when she sees that indeed, it is Scorpia.
“Yeah, it’s her. Do you mind if I answer her text? She seems worried.”
Catra grunts and nods her head. When Adora asks her password, she mutters, “0119,” and Adora absolutely does not comment on the fact that that’s her birthday. Besides, her own password is Catra’s birthday, so it’s not like she has much room to talk. After sending a quick message to Scorpia, Adora closes the app—and pauses.
“Hey, Catra?”
Catra makes another noncommittal sound, squinting her eyes open and scowling when she sees Adora’s shit-eating grin. “What?”
“Am I your lock screen?”
For a moment, Catra lies still and quiet, the still squinting and frowning, and before Adora can prepare herself, she pounces, tackling Adora and scrambling for the phone as Adora tries to hold it out of her reach. She knows she’s laughing far too loudly now, that Bow and Glimmer can probably hear them from the next room over and that she’s probably not helping the hangovers that they’re sure to have, but Adora can’t bring herself to care, not when she has Catra straddling her lap and trying her best to grab her phone. Adora shoves it under her back despite the awkward position, and for a moment, they freeze, Catra leaning over her with the ends of her wild hair tickling her cheeks and her eyes bright with mischief, and slowly, the smirk on her face melts into a softer, sweeter smile as her gaze drifts down to Adora’s lips.
“Hey, Adora,” she whispers. And Adora could honestly wake up every morning like this, to a mostly naked Catra, affectionate and playful. And even when Catra leans down like she’s going to kiss Adora quiet only to snatch her phone back when Adora is distracted, all Adora can do is watch her, a silly smile on her lips.
Her fondness must be bleeding out into her expression, because Catra stares her down, nose wrinkled in confusion. “What?”
“You’re just…really cute. Not just the lock screen, but just…you. You’re really, really cute, Catra.”
“You were not supposed to see that.”
“Oh, come on! It was cute, I knew you had to like me deep down—”
“I do not like you!”
“Uh huh, sure. You definitely don’t like me. I totally believe you—” Adora is promptly cut off by a pillow to the face, and she blindly grabs for Catra and rolls them over to trap her beneath her. Catra squeaks in surprise at the sudden position change, eyes wide as she stares up at Adora, petulance already shining through on her face. And despite the way her messy curls have spread out across the pillow, despite the beginnings of a pimple on her cheek, despite her vicious morning breath, Adora still thinks she’s beautiful.
(And Catra must see it on her face, because she wriggles free just enough to elbow Adora in the gut, and shriek again when Adora begins to tickle her in retaliation.)
15. “I missed you so much.”
Adora is nervous. She shouldn’t be; she’s been looking forward to this for months now—years, if she counts all of the time she spent wishing that Catra would come home to her—and it’s just Catra, but she’s still nervous.
Mara drops her off and surprisingly does not say anything, only gives Adora a Look through the rearview mirror that Adora ignores as she hops out of the car. There are no other cars in the drive, so for a moment, she’s sure that she’s the first one, that she’ll have time to prepare herself and what she wants to say, and she fiddles with her phone as she rings the doorbell. Bow answers the door, giving Adora a wide grin as he ushers her inside, and before Adora can ask who’s here, if Catra is here, she rounds the corner and sees Glimmer playing a game on her phone, and Entrapta is on the floor, and—
No Catra.
Adora breathes out a sigh—of relief, of disappointment—and settles on the couch next to Glimmer, muttering out a greeting as she checks her phone again. No new messages from Catra; her last one had been read almost half an hour ago, but Catra has never responded. Maybe she’s not coming, maybe she changed her mind, maybe—
Someone comes running down the stairs, and a familiar voice drawls out, “Hey, Bow, you ran out of—”
And it’s stupid to say that everything froze in that moment, but as Adora looks up and finds Catra looking back at her, it’s like…everything else has faded to the back, and all she can focus on is the pounding of her heart and the way her hands have started to shake and Catra, always Catra. She gets up as Catra walks towards her and they crash into each other in a hug, and Adora blinks back tears as Catra holds her tight. She still smells the same, still looks the same, and as the seconds tick on and they stay in their warm embrace, Catra whispers, “I missed you. I missed you so much.” And it’s just for her, this private little thing, just eight little words, and Adora yearns to say it back, but all she does is tuck her face into Catra’s neck and let herself be held.
