Welfare In Dairy Cows - Evaluation Indicators
Abstract
Sustainability, animal welfare, environmental and climate concerns and awareness of social responsibility towards the community have increased consumers interest in knowing how, where and by whom food is produced and handled on its way from the farm to the table. This constitutes a business opportunity for farmers as a growing number of consumers want to buy food, produced locally or regionally directly or under farm certification schemes whereby acceptable animal welfare conditions play often an important role. Farming systems for dairy cows, including housing and management conditions, are important factors affecting their health and other aspects of their welfare, partly through housing and equipment and partly through management and handling practices.
Importance of European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)
The panel on Animal Health and Animal Welfare (AHAW) is a scientific advice on all aspects of animal diseases and welfare of food producing-animals during breeding, rearing, transportation and slaughter. Analysis of the impact that the conditions and treatment of animals can have on both animal and human health. Animal welfare is an important part of EFSA’s remit. The safety of the food chain is indirectly affected by the welfare of animals, particularly those farmed for food production, due to the close links between animal welfare, animal health and food-borne diseases [1,2].
The AHAW Panel has published five scientific opinions and a scientific report on the overall effects of the most relevant farming systems on the welfare of dairy cows and related diseases, assessing the potential impacts of housing, feeding, management and genetic selection [3]. Due to the wealth of data, the experts subdivided the risk assessments into four areas: a. Metabolic and reproductive disorders. b. Udder disorders. c. Leg and locomotion problems. d. Behavioural disorders, fear and pain. Following a request from the European Commission, the AHAW Panel was asked to deliver the first scientific opinion on the welfare of dairy cows, in july 2009 considering whether current farming and husbandry systems comply with the requirements of and welfare of dairy cows from the pathological, zootechnical, physiological and behavioural points of view [4-6]. Later in January 2012 published a new scientific report on welfare in dairy cows, which was one of the most important to increase the monitoring of welfare in the farms: the use of animal-based measures to assess welfare of dairy cows. Other international organisations have also issued recommendations and guidelines concerning animal welfare, such as the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the Council of Europe. The EU is a signatory to the European Convention for the protection of animals kept for farming purposes, adopted by the Council of Europe [7].
Indicators of Welfare in Dairy Cows
The study of useful variables for evaluating animal welfare in dairy herds has increased considerably in the last years, and a number of indicators are now available which are well documented for being included in animal welfare protocols. However, the protocols that have been proposed and applied until now are costly and difficult to implement, and are starting to be evaluated. There is consensus in the reliability of measurements based directly on the animal as useful indicators, such as body condition, foot diseases, mastitis and other more general indicators, such as infertility and mortality rates obtained from records of dairy farms that can be studied under our production conditions [8].
In order to identify appropriate indicators which address the most important animal welfare problems known from practice, its very important have selected indicators for assessing animal welfare with regard to reliability, validity and practicability. In animal welfare legislation as well as agricultural practice, mainly resource- and management-based animal welfare indicators have been used so far. These describe the conditions, e. g. the space available and the management, which are expected to safeguard animal welfare. However, such resource- and managementbased indicators only allow indirect conclusions to be drawn on how well the animals may fare under these conditions. With the animal-based indicators required in the self-assessment system, on the other hand, the behaviour/health of the animals is recorded directly, so that direct conclusions about their welfare can be drawn. EFSA assessed the welfare risks related to the most commonly used and specialised dairy cows farming systems, integrating the use of animal-based measures to assess their consequences (Table 1).
The livestock keeper should benefit from the on-farm selfassessment. To be able to use the results effectively for planning and implementing improvement measures, the single indicators should not just be assessed, but instead be integrated into more comprehensive management aids. The sets of indicators should therefore also be applied as a whole as far as possible, as with each missing indicator, the informative content is reduced and at the same time the risk increases that animal welfare problems are not recognised. The use of behavioral indicators, health and management in the evaluation of welfare in cows milk is a very valuable tool, considering the difficulty of using physiological and immunological indicators, or drawbacks, such as costs.

The health implications of A1 beta –casein relative to A2 beta-casein are controversial. At times the scientific debate can become clouded by the reality that milk is a commercial product. Conversion of all herds so as to replace A1 beta-casein with A2 beta-casein over one to two cow generations (4 – 12 years) is technically straight forward. Accordingly, the beta-casein issue can be presented as either a threat to, or an opportunity for, the mainstream industry, with elements of each perspective being valid.
Exogenous opioid substances are called exorphins, as opposed to endorphins. Exorphins include opioid food peptides, such as gluten exorphin and opioid food peptides, and are often contained in cereals and animal milk. Exorphins mimic the actions of endorphins by binding to and activating opioid receptors in the brain.
Endorphins help relieve pain, reduce stress and improve your sense of well-being. Endorphins are created in your pituitary gland and hypothalamus, both located in the brain. Endorphins are a type of neurotransmitter, or messenger in your body.
"Perhaps because gastroenterology, immunology, toxicology, and the nutrition and agricultural sciences are outside of their competence and responsibility, psychologists and psychiatrists typically fail to appreciate the impact that food can have on their patients’ condition. Here we attempt to help correct this situation by reviewing, in non-technical, plain English, how cereal grains—the world’s most abundant food source—can affect human behavior and mental health. We present the implications for the psychological sciences of the findings that, in all of us, bread (1) makes the gut more permeable and can thus encourage the migration of food particles to sites where they are not expected, prompting the immune system to attack both these particles and brain-relevant substances that resemble them, and (2) releases opioid-like compounds, capable of causing mental derangement if they make it to the brain. A grain-free diet, although difficult to maintain (especially for those that need it the most), could improve the mental health of many and be a complete cure for others.

The manufacture of exorphins is incredibly efficient. The nutritionally insignificant intake of 1 g of casein (about two tablespoons of cow milk), for example, produces opioids in large enough amounts to exert physiological effects (Meisel and FitzGerald, 2000). This is remarkable in view of the facts that (a) the opioids from gluten are stronger than those from casein (Zioudrou et al., 1979), and (b) the daily average consumption of gluten in Europe is 10–20 g, with many people exceeding 50 g (Sapone et al., 2012). In the brain of rats, the opioids from casein have been shown to be 10 times more potent than morphine (Herrera-Marschitz et al., 1989). If all exorphins released in the gut made it to the brain, it is hard to see how we could keep functioning."

"A couple of years ago I read a book called "Devil in the Milk" by an Australian (Keith Woodford) who was explaining A2 milk versus A1 milk (1). There is absolutely an issue with dairy because of the casomorphin content: two tablespoons of A1 cow milk is equal to a shot of heroin in an opiate sense. So the inflammation that a casomorphin that a casomorphin can give your body (two tablespoons of milk) is equal to a shot of heroin. I mean, he literally writes this. So the whiter the milk, the fresher the milk, what you have is a lot of (or dairy, kaffir or yogurt, whatever, goat cheese) you have a lot of protein. If you have aged cheese the fermentation process eats the protein and the lactose, this isn't really an issue it's more the proteins, the proteins are inflammatory.
So if you're not well, if you have an autoimmune condition, your immune system is overreactive, it's going to see a protein like gluten, or dairy, or casomorphin, it's going to see that as a pathogen, it will react. How does it react? Again, it could be any way but it will react to that protein thinking it's a virus.
So if you're, as you said depending upon where you are on your health journey, if you still have pain, if you still have arthritis, if you still have eczema, if you still have psoriasis… I would take out dairy. And in some cases I'll even say to try to stop butter for a week or so. And I've had a couple who've had a really good result from that. And then they heal and then they can add in the butter."

Effects of Climate Change on Livestock: Sri Lankan Perspectives
 INTRODUCTION
Crops and livestock are the most important sub-economic sectors in Sri Lankan agriculture, especially for the rural population. The cattle sector in Sri Lanka contributes roughly 0.6 percent of the country's GDP, but this figure could be higher. Milk output climbed by 4% in 2014, and this trend is expected to continue and has been on the rise in recent years. This is mostly due to the fact that a rise in an animal's output and the number of animals. For instance, In 2015, the cow population increased by 10% while the buffalo population climbed by 2%.In comparison to 2014,Carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (NOx) are the three principal greenhouse gases (GHGs) (CH4) as well as nitrous oxide (N2O).
Aside from livestock's contribution to global warming, the industry has been severely harmed as a result of it. Due to prolonged drought or heavy rainfall, rising temperatures could diminish roughage yields or ruin the harvest, results in a feed shortage and poorer animal productivity. The amount of milk produced by cattle and buffalo is largely determined by breed. Temperate breeds and hybrids, in comparison to more heat-tolerant tropical breeds, may perform better in cooler regions and produce more milk. Large animal-growing areas would become inappropriate for high-producing animals as the temperature rose, resulting in decreasing milk production.
Cattle and buffaloes are the most popular livestock in Sri Lanka, with sheep, goats, and pigs occupying lesser roles. Regardless, although livestock makes a little contribution to national GDP, it is one of the most important sources of income. For a huge proportion of the country's people, this is a source of revenue and a source of subsistence. Dairy cattle serve several purposes, including milk supply for domestic usage. Male animals as a medium of transport, financial income generated their feces as an useful fertilizer, and through meat.
The value and contribution of cattle to the livelihood of Sri Lankans is important on both an economic and social level. In Sri Lankan settings, the impact of global warming on the sector has been less well established. The goal of this study is to assemble statistics on GHG emissions from cattle as well as current climate change research and development initiatives.
Greenhouse gas emissions by livestock
The largest GHG emitted by animals is methane. The amount of methane emitted by cattle is determined by the animals' body size, metabolism, degree of activity, and the quality of their nutrition. Although a few estimations have been published, the author believes that the amount of methane generated by animals in Sri Lanka has not been scientifically estimated.
Lokupitiya used the tier 2 method proposed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to estimate the enteric methane emission of Sri Lankan cattle and buffaloes, and found that the methane emission factors for dairy cows, buffaloes, and sheep were lower than the IPCC default values. Lokupitiya emphasized the importance of validating estimates through sufficient measurements because this is an estimate.
The methane and nitrous oxide emissions by cattle in Sri Lanka were estimated in a study. The study also looked at roughage production's manure management and GHG inventory. According to the findings, GHG emissions are highest in the Dry Zone and lowest in the Wet Zone.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES RELATED TO GHG EMISSION IN SRI LANKA
Mitigation
Aside from a few estimates, research on GHG emissions, mitigation, and adaptation techniques in the cattle sector is scarce in Sri Lanka. This could be due to a lack of infrastructure (e.g., respiration chambers for measuring GHG, SF6 tracer technique, etc.) or a lack of funding and experience in the country. However, a number of research have been carried out in order to improve livestock production efficiency, mostly through better feeding, housing, welfare, and health. They do not explicitly address or report on reducing GHG emissions or climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies, but they have indirectly linked the issue to some extent, for example, improving feeding efficiency has been found to reduce methane emissions and enhance milk output.
Adaptation
One of the primary issues faced by livestock farmers is the high ambient temperature in most parts of the country. Temperate breeds do not do well in warm climates, but local breeds that have evolved to those conditions give less milk. The climate of Sri Lanka's mid and uplands is ideal for high-producing animals, but land available for livestock production is restricted. As a result, dairy farming has to be relocated to the country's Intermediate and Dry Zones. Moreover, as a result of climate change, the temperature in cooler sections of the county is anticipated to rise. Given this fact, as well as the fact that there is more area accessible for cattle farming in the Intermediate and Dry Zones, there is a growing trend to build farm buildings to deal with the intense temperatures. To accommodate additional air flow, most farms choose well ventilated, high roof sheds, and some have added cooling and fogging systems. Although no scientific study has been undertaken to far, these farms with temperate breeds are located in hot and humid locations such as Hambantota in the country's southern province and were shown to be effective.
GAPS AND FUTURE RESEARCH NEEDS
Modeling and providing mitigation and adaptation methods to counteract the harmful consequences of climate change require accurate data. Sri Lanka has only estimates when it comes to GHG emissions, but emissions under local feeding and management conditions have not been objectively measured, and there are no facilities in the nation to measure these parameters at the ground level. Furthermore, several studies intended to increase livestock production have failed to address climate change or greenhouse gas emissions.
As a result, the government immediately requires the establishment of a GHG emission measuring facility for cattle, which would aid in determining the most effective adapting and mitigating measures. Climate change should be a top concern for funding agencies. When possible, all stakeholders, including government ministries and departments, research centers, funding organizations, and universities should be encouraged to include climate change mitigation and adaptation measures in their livestock research and development agenda.
CONCLUSION
Climate change is having a significant impact on the country's livestock business. Because of data on GHG emissions is based primarily on assumptions, capacity improvement in this area should be prioritized. Some studies and development programs have been carried out in the country without expressly addressing global warming mitigation or adaptation strategies, yet they have contributed to this goal. As a reason, more research and development programmers’ in the livestock sector should be launched to better prepare for the negative effects of climate change.

A Conspiracy Theorist’s Take On Coronavirus Conspiracy Theories
So, I am a lifelong Conspiracy Theorist. However, I am part of the often forgot about majority of theorists who don’t base their theories purely on internet hearsay and bigotry. Let’s talk COVID- 19, without that nonsense clouding the truth.
This post is U.S. centric.
I. Origins
I think that the virology lab in Wuhan had something to do with it, just because of how highly suspicious the location of the initial outbreak is. There are a few different possibilities:
a) it was a bio weapon in the later stages of development and was accidentally released;
b) it was a bio weapon in the early stages of development and its release was accidental or meant to be a test but got wildly out of hand;
c) it wasn’t a bio weapon but scientific negligence is what led to the initial outbreak;
d) it’s part of a bigger plan. We’ll get to that theory later
COVID- 19 is highly contagious and has produced several potent mutations, but the death rate is low. This supports either the non- bio weapon or early- stage bio weapon theory: if this was a late stage- bio weapon or an intention release of one, the death rate would be higher. I also don’t think that China would have intentionally released the virus in Wuhan, as this has garnered suspicion and negative attention. It would have made more sense to release it elsewhere, which is why I think it was either accidental or premature.
II. Masks
Three coexisting facts:
1. If the virus came from China, then the American government + corporate powers probably didn’t have a (direct) hand in it;
2. This doesn’t mean that the government + corporate powers aren’t taking advantage of the situation (they definitely are);
3. There is a historical precedent for wearing masks in public and avoiding gatherings during pandemics and epidemics (e.g., the Spanish Flu).
Masks are a conventional, reasonable strategy for avoiding affection. Whether there are organizations using mask mandates for their own purposes is an entirely separate matter, and should be treated as such.
Also, the theory that masks are step one in trying to force Islamic dress codes on us is an example of blatant misinformation used to distract from actual conspiracies + hate mongering used to divide us (the masses). I could give a lot of rebuttals to this bout of Islamophobic nonsense, but I’ll say this: If the malevolent powers that be in this country were, for some reason, interested in forcing Islamic dress codes upon us, our faces would not be their first concern. It would be our midriffs, arms, and legs, then head coverings. Face coverings are far from universal among Islamic communities.
III. Vaccines
This is where stuff gets more complicated. There are a lot of concerns and theories over the vaccine, some of which are more valid than others. There is, of course, the pre- pandemic anti- vaccination movement, which warrants its own discussion. As someone who acknowledges the science behind vaccines in general as sound, I approach this debate with the question “is there anything risky or nefarious about any of the vaccines?”
The most prevalent concerns tend to be :
A) the vaccines were rushed in production and testing and may be unsafe;
B) the vaccines contain a microchip to track us/influence our behavior;
C) the vaccines are designed to reduce or eliminate fertility (especially in women).
Unfortunately, A has no easy answer. The CDC has recently released data that suggests that the vaccine has a higher casualty rate than any other vaccine in the past 20 years, but this still only accounts for 2% of covid related death. To simplify: the COVID-19 vaccines have a high death rate for a vaccine, but a much lower death rate than actual COVID-19.
Of course, it doesn’t help that there’s no real way to verify these numbers, and many news sources either a) refuse to look in to it or b) staunchly believe that COVID was created for the sole purpose of making their lord and savior, Trump, look bad.
Regardless, waiting to get vaccinated is an understandable course of action even if, statistically, getting vaccinated reduces total risk.
Let’s track the history of B: the head of the Russian Communist party and a former Donald Trump advisor support the theory that the vaccines contain microchips to track the movement of the vaccinated, track who has been vaccinated, and possibly influence behavior.
Also feeding the theory is the fact that Bill Gates wanted to give the vaccinated “digital certificates” to identify themselves, and was at one point playing with the idea of injecting people with a “special ink” to make an “invisible tattoo” that would be used to identify the vaccinated without the use of records.
I trust none of these individuals, as each have their own agendas. What makes me skeptical of this theory is that the U.S. government + the corporate powers already track all of us through cell phones and security cameras (fun fact: the U.S. has more surveillance cameras per person than China).
When I took the vaccine out of necessity, I took meticulous notes before and afterwards, documenting my thoughts, opinions, and patterns of behavior. I have not noted any changes.
Finally, C. This one is difficult to prove or disprove, because
1) most people who get vaccinated aren’t going to immediately start actively trying to have babies;
2) fertility rates have been steadily declining for decades;
3) although changes in menstration have been reported after vaccination, the vast majority experienced this as a short term side effect only (I.e, their cycles went back to normal). I had no change in my cycle, nor did my mother.
I will say that I’m not interested in ever giving birth, which is one reason I’m not worried about this- I’m much more inclined to worry about current humans that theoretical future humans.
Now, one thing to note is that reducing the population so drastically is a counterintuitive move for the elites. Less workers = each individual worker is, statistically, less disposable. Less consumers = less consumption.
The only way this theory could be true and make sense is if it’s just the lead up to something else, like lab- based, expensive reproduction to mostly avoid the above, kill off the “undesirables,” and put people in debt whenever they want kids, functionally putting them further under corporate control.
If this was the plan, than the Global Powers That Be (assuming that this was the result of collusion and not China’s attempt at a bio weapon) definitely weren’t ready yet: that kind of technology is available, but not nearly efficient or cost- effective for them to avoid the worker- shortage pitfall yet. Just look at how corporate America has nearly buckled under its own weight at the current shortage of minimum wage workers!
TLDR; the vaccine came from the Wuhan lab and was either a prematurely released bio weapon, the result of epidemiological negligence, or the lead up to some grand conspiracy to control human reproduction, which would be a stupid move on the part of the government- corporate- military complex, and would have required global cooperation and coordination.

The Science Of Sales: Six Ways Salesmen Convince You To Buy
Your mom tells you to go to the market and sell your only cow. As you walk along, you encounter a man who wants to trade you a handful of beans for the cow. "No way," you say. The stranger tells you these are magic beans. You hand over the cow, get the beans, and end up running from a giant in a magic sky castle. As you flee, you think, "How did that guy get me to trade a perfectly good cow for those beans?"
There's a science to persuasion, and if you know how it works, you'll know how to avoid falling for a deal that's too good to be true.
The Classics Never Go Out of Style
Persuasion is deeply ingrained in how societies function. Aristotle described three classic rules of verbal or written persuasion. The first is establishing your credibility and authenticity with your audience, possibly by downplaying your own achievements or identifying common ground. This is essential because if the speaker is not perceived as honest, they have already lost their sale. The second is appealing to emotion, a part of human nature that often trumps logic in decision making. The third rule is appealing to reason, that is, make a valid argument.
Although many people have brilliant ideas and honest motives, not everyone is able to win an audience over through persuasion. This has lead many to dub persuasion as an "art," a soft skill that everyone can study, but few can master. However, scientists and marketing professionals are now discovering that when it comes to persuasion, there are scientific variables at play beyond the clever talking and copywriting.
A Primer on The Science of Persuasion
Robert Cialdini, professor emeritus of psychology and marketing at Arizona State University has identified six scientific principles of persuasion:
1. Reciprocity: This is the feeling that you need to return a favor. Ever wonder why a restaurant might hand out free samples or your cable company might throw in HBO for new customers? Once you've had that first taste for free, you're more likely to start paying.
2.Commitment: Hooked on your daily Starbucks? Paid actual money to see all of the "Star Wars" prequels? Tuning in every week, hoping "The Walking Dead" will figure out where it's going? That's commitment. Once you're hooked on a product, it's easier to keep you paying for it. (Even if that payment is just time.) Commitment also accounts for the low-ball approach you hear from car salesmen. Sure, the car's only $10,000. But there's also this cool stereo and a sun roof and an extra cup holder and taxes and fees and now you're staring at $15,000. You don't back away because you already committed at $10,000. Your mind has a hard time pivoting away from the choice you made to buy.
3. Social Proof: We humans have a pack mentality. Researchers report that hotel guests are 29 percent more likely to reuse their towels if they are told most other guests choose to reuse theirs. The percentage jumps to 39 percent if they're told the majority of guests who stayed in that room reused their towels. This is a key tactic of Great Britain's Behavioral Insight Team, also known as the "Nudge Unit." We don't want to be left behind, so we tend to go with the herd.
4. Authority: If Stephen Hawking told you Skittles made you smarter, you might be more likely to head out for a rainbow-colored sugar rush. Hawking is an expert, and we're more likely to be swayed by expertise. Michael Jordan was the perfect pitchman for athletic shoes and sports drinks. Similarly, Sam Waterston is an expert in robot attacks, which made him an excellent spokesman for Old Glory Insurance
5. Liking: In addition to the opinions of experts, you're more likely to trust the opinions of people similar to you. When that salesperson says you look great in that outfit or compliments your haircut, they're trying to build a rapport. Once you like them, you're willing to trust them.
6. Scarcity: People want what they can't have. That's why we jump to buy limited edition collectibles and overpay for that dream home we just toured. Would the Shamrock Shake or McRib be such a phenomenon if it were available year 'round? Scarcity works via the concept of anticipated regret: we anticipate how bad we'll feel if you miss out on a purchase or experience. Limited time! Act now! Think of all the pumpkin spice flavor you won't be able to savor when spring rolls around!
So the next time you hit the sales floor, keep your ears peeled for these six strategies. Chances are, the sales team will be using at least a few to pry open your wallet.
