Part 2: Response to ianVisits article on the Milk Exhibit
I think that the ianVisits article was an insufficient, uncharitable look at an exhibit that was both thoughtful and flawed. Ian writes that he “doubt(s) many people look at a picture of a cow in an African farm and think of European colonialists at work” as if that’s a rebuttal to one particular feature of the exhibit, but the whole purpose of having a caption like that is to get the audience to think of something unexpected – like the tangible links between farming practices and the imposition of colonial rule. I don’t think everyone has to agree with the interpretations in the collection, but Ian seems particularly unwilling to even consider his own complicity, direct or indirect, in structures of oppression and colonialism. Ian overlooks discussions of more overt racism to insinuate that the curators of the milk exhibit are overreaching, while white supremacists themselves, in a video taken shortly after Donald Trump was elected, explicitly link milk drinking and their ability to process lactose to their belief that they belong to a superior race.
I think a valid critique of the exhibit would be to focus on how the history of dairy and dairy products from a scientific perspective was lacking. Words like “industrialization” and “processing” were used interchangeably and often negatively when a more specific term was availble; cruelty towards animals or exploitation of labour can happen on any size of farm. I was also concerned for food safety after a couple of sneak references to the raw milk movement – pasteurization may not be natural but it has undoubtedly saved lives.

The health implications of A1 beta –casein relative to A2 beta-casein are controversial. At times the scientific debate can become clouded by the reality that milk is a commercial product. Conversion of all herds so as to replace A1 beta-casein with A2 beta-casein over one to two cow generations (4 – 12 years) is technically straight forward. Accordingly, the beta-casein issue can be presented as either a threat to, or an opportunity for, the mainstream industry, with elements of each perspective being valid.
Exogenous opioid substances are called exorphins, as opposed to endorphins. Exorphins include opioid food peptides, such as gluten exorphin and opioid food peptides, and are often contained in cereals and animal milk. Exorphins mimic the actions of endorphins by binding to and activating opioid receptors in the brain.
Endorphins help relieve pain, reduce stress and improve your sense of well-being. Endorphins are created in your pituitary gland and hypothalamus, both located in the brain. Endorphins are a type of neurotransmitter, or messenger in your body.
"Perhaps because gastroenterology, immunology, toxicology, and the nutrition and agricultural sciences are outside of their competence and responsibility, psychologists and psychiatrists typically fail to appreciate the impact that food can have on their patients’ condition. Here we attempt to help correct this situation by reviewing, in non-technical, plain English, how cereal grains—the world’s most abundant food source—can affect human behavior and mental health. We present the implications for the psychological sciences of the findings that, in all of us, bread (1) makes the gut more permeable and can thus encourage the migration of food particles to sites where they are not expected, prompting the immune system to attack both these particles and brain-relevant substances that resemble them, and (2) releases opioid-like compounds, capable of causing mental derangement if they make it to the brain. The manufacture of exorphins is incredibly efficient. The nutritionally insignificant intake of 1 g of casein (about two tablespoons of cow milk), for example, produces opioids in large enough amounts to exert physiological effects (Meisel and FitzGerald, 2000). This is remarkable in view of the facts that (a) the opioids from gluten are stronger than those from casein (Zioudrou et al., 1979), and (b) the daily average consumption of gluten in Europe is 10–20 g, with many people exceeding 50 g (Sapone et al., 2012). In the brain of rats, the opioids from casein have been shown to be 10 times more potent than morphine (Herrera-Marschitz et al., 1989). If all exorphins released in the gut made it to the brain, it is hard to see how we could keep functioning."

"A couple of years ago I read a book called "Devil in the Milk" by an Australian (Keith Woodford) who was explaining A2 milk versus A1 milk (1). There is absolutely an issue with dairy because of the casomorphin content: two tablespoons of A1 cow milk is equal to a shot of heroin in an opiate sense. So the inflammation that a casomorphin that a casomorphin can give your body (two tablespoons of milk) is equal to a shot of heroin. I mean, he literally writes this. So the whiter the milk, the fresher the milk, what you have is a lot of (or dairy, kaffir or yogurt, whatever, goat cheese) you have a lot of protein. If you have aged cheese the fermentation process eats the protein and the lactose, this isn't really an issue it's more the proteins, the proteins are inflammatory.
So if you're not well, if you have an autoimmune condition, your immune system is overreactive, it's going to see a protein like gluten, or dairy, or casomorphin, it's going to see that as a pathogen, it will react. How does it react? Again, it could be any way but it will react to that protein thinking it's a virus.
So if you're, as you said depending upon where you are on your health journey, if you still have pain, if you still have arthritis, if you still have eczema, if you still have psoriasis… I would take out dairy. And in some cases I'll even say to try to stop butter for a week or so. And I've had a couple who've had a really good result from that. And then they heal and then they can add in the butter."
(1) A1 milk, which is the most commonly used milk and is abundantly available, is obtained from cows of Western origin like Holstein, Jersey etc. and yields a large quantity of milk. The A2 milk is the milk obtained by the cows of Indian origin like Gir, Sahiwal etc.

Effects of Climate Change on Livestock: Sri Lankan Perspectives
INTRODUCTION
Crops and livestock are the most important sub-economic sectors in Sri Lankan agriculture, especially for the rural population. The cattle sector in Sri Lanka contributes roughly 0.6 percent of the country's GDP, but this figure could be higher. Milk output climbed by 4% in 2014, and this trend is expected to continue and has been on the rise in recent years. This is mostly due to the fact that a rise in an animal's output and the number of animals. For instance, In 2015, the cow population increased by 10% while the buffalo population climbed by 2%.In comparison to 2014,Carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (NOx) are the three principal greenhouse gases (GHGs) (CH4) as well as nitrous oxide (N2O).
Aside from livestock's contribution to global warming, the industry has been severely harmed as a result of it. Due to prolonged drought or heavy rainfall, rising temperatures could diminish roughage yields or ruin the harvest, results in a feed shortage and poorer animal productivity. The amount of milk produced by cattle and buffalo is largely determined by breed. Temperate breeds and hybrids, in comparison to more heat-tolerant tropical breeds, may perform better in cooler regions and produce more milk. Large animal-growing areas would become inappropriate for high-producing animals as the temperature rose, resulting in decreasing milk production.
Cattle and buffaloes are the most popular livestock in Sri Lanka, with sheep, goats, and pigs occupying lesser roles. Regardless, although livestock makes a little contribution to national GDP, it is one of the most important sources of income. For a huge proportion of the country's people, this is a source of revenue and a source of subsistence. Dairy cattle serve several purposes, including milk supply for domestic usage. Male animals as a medium of transport, financial income generated their feces as an useful fertilizer, and through meat.
The value and contribution of cattle to the livelihood of Sri Lankans is important on both an economic and social level. In Sri Lankan settings, the impact of global warming on the sector has been less well established. The goal of this study is to assemble statistics on GHG emissions from cattle as well as current climate change research and development initiatives.
Greenhouse gas emissions by livestock
The largest GHG emitted by animals is methane. The amount of methane emitted by cattle is determined by the animals' body size, metabolism, degree of activity, and the quality of their nutrition. Although a few estimations have been published, the author believes that the amount of methane generated by animals in Sri Lanka has not been scientifically estimated.
Lokupitiya used the tier 2 method proposed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to estimate the enteric methane emission of Sri Lankan cattle and buffaloes, and found that the methane emission factors for dairy cows, buffaloes, and sheep were lower than the IPCC default values. Lokupitiya emphasized the importance of validating estimates through sufficient measurements because this is an estimate.
The methane and nitrous oxide emissions by cattle in Sri Lanka were estimated in a study. The study also looked at roughage production's manure management and GHG inventory. According to the findings, GHG emissions are highest in the Dry Zone and lowest in the Wet Zone.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES RELATED TO GHG EMISSION IN SRI LANKA
Mitigation
Aside from a few estimates, research on GHG emissions, mitigation, and adaptation techniques in the cattle sector is scarce in Sri Lanka. This could be due to a lack of infrastructure (e.g., respiration chambers for measuring GHG, SF6 tracer technique, etc.) or a lack of funding and experience in the country. However, a number of research have been carried out in order to improve livestock production efficiency, mostly through better feeding, housing, welfare, and health. They do not explicitly address or report on reducing GHG emissions or climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies, but they have indirectly linked the issue to some extent, for example, improving feeding efficiency has been found to reduce methane emissions and enhance milk output.
Adaptation
One of the primary issues faced by livestock farmers is the high ambient temperature in most parts of the country. Temperate breeds do not do well in warm climates, but local breeds that have evolved to those conditions give less milk. The climate of Sri Lanka's mid and uplands is ideal for high-producing animals, but land available for livestock production is restricted. As a result, dairy farming has to be relocated to the country's Intermediate and Dry Zones. Moreover, as a result of climate change, the temperature in cooler sections of the county is anticipated to rise. Given this fact, as well as the fact that there is more area accessible for cattle farming in the Intermediate and Dry Zones, there is a growing trend to build farm buildings to deal with the intense temperatures. To accommodate additional air flow, most farms choose well ventilated, high roof sheds, and some have added cooling and fogging systems. Although no scientific study has been undertaken to far, these farms with temperate breeds are located in hot and humid locations such as Hambantota in the country's southern province and were shown to be effective.
GAPS AND FUTURE RESEARCH NEEDS
Modeling and providing mitigation and adaptation methods to counteract the harmful consequences of climate change require accurate data. Sri Lanka has only estimates when it comes to GHG emissions, but emissions under local feeding and management conditions have not been objectively measured, and there are no facilities in the nation to measure these parameters at the ground level. Furthermore, several studies intended to increase livestock production have failed to address climate change or greenhouse gas emissions.
As a result, the government immediately requires the establishment of a GHG emission measuring facility for cattle, which would aid in determining the most effective adapting and mitigating measures. Climate change should be a top concern for funding agencies. When possible, all stakeholders, including government ministries and departments, research centers, funding organizations, and universities should be encouraged to include climate change mitigation and adaptation measures in their livestock research and development agenda.
CONCLUSION
Climate change is having a significant impact on the country's livestock business. Because of data on GHG emissions is based primarily on assumptions, capacity improvement in this area should be prioritized. Some studies and development programs have been carried out in the country without expressly addressing global warming mitigation or adaptation strategies, yet they have contributed to this goal. As a reason, more research and development programmers’ in the livestock sector should be launched to better prepare for the negative effects of climate change.

There are plenty of vegans who know it takes time. Try a vegan day of the week, or try some substitutions for a while. A Conspiracy Theorist’s Take On Coronavirus Conspiracy Theories
So, I am a lifelong Conspiracy Theorist. However, I am part of the often forgot about majority of theorists who don’t base their theories purely on internet hearsay and bigotry. Let’s talk COVID- 19, without that nonsense clouding the truth.
This post is U.S. centric.
I. Origins
I think that the virology lab in Wuhan had something to do with it, just because of how highly suspicious the location of the initial outbreak is. There are a few different possibilities:
a) it was a bio weapon in the later stages of development and was accidentally released;
b) it was a bio weapon in the early stages of development and its release was accidental or meant to be a test but got wildly out of hand;
c) it wasn’t a bio weapon but scientific negligence is what led to the initial outbreak;
d) it’s part of a bigger plan. We’ll get to that theory later
COVID- 19 is highly contagious and has produced several potent mutations, but the death rate is low. This supports either the non- bio weapon or early- stage bio weapon theory: if this was a late stage- bio weapon or an intention release of one, the death rate would be higher. I also don’t think that China would have intentionally released the virus in Wuhan, as this has garnered suspicion and negative attention. It would have made more sense to release it elsewhere, which is why I think it was either accidental or premature.
II. Masks
Three coexisting facts:
1. If the virus came from China, then the American government + corporate powers probably didn’t have a (direct) hand in it;
2. This doesn’t mean that the government + corporate powers aren’t taking advantage of the situation (they definitely are);
3. There is a historical precedent for wearing masks in public and avoiding gatherings during pandemics and epidemics (e.g., the Spanish Flu).
Masks are a conventional, reasonable strategy for avoiding affection. Whether there are organizations using mask mandates for their own purposes is an entirely separate matter, and should be treated as such.
Also, the theory that masks are step one in trying to force Islamic dress codes on us is an example of blatant misinformation used to distract from actual conspiracies + hate mongering used to divide us (the masses). I could give a lot of rebuttals to this bout of Islamophobic nonsense, but I’ll say this: If the malevolent powers that be in this country were, for some reason, interested in forcing Islamic dress codes upon us, our faces would not be their first concern. It would be our midriffs, arms, and legs, then head coverings. Face coverings are far from universal among Islamic communities.
III. Vaccines
This is where stuff gets more complicated. There are a lot of concerns and theories over the vaccine, some of which are more valid than others. There is, of course, the pre- pandemic anti- vaccination movement, which warrants its own discussion. As someone who acknowledges the science behind vaccines in general as sound, I approach this debate with the question “is there anything risky or nefarious about any of the vaccines?”
The most prevalent concerns tend to be :
A) the vaccines were rushed in production and testing and may be unsafe;
B) the vaccines contain a microchip to track us/influence our behavior;
C) the vaccines are designed to reduce or eliminate fertility (especially in women).
Unfortunately, A has no easy answer. The CDC has recently released data that suggests that the vaccine has a higher casualty rate than any other vaccine in the past 20 years, but this still only accounts for 2% of covid related death. To simplify: the COVID-19 vaccines have a high death rate for a vaccine, but a much lower death rate than actual COVID-19.
Of course, it doesn’t help that there’s no real way to verify these numbers, and many news sources either a) refuse to look in to it or b) staunchly believe that COVID was created for the sole purpose of making their lord and savior, Trump, look bad.
Regardless, waiting to get vaccinated is an understandable course of action even if, statistically, getting vaccinated reduces total risk.
Let’s track the history of B: the head of the Russian Communist party and a former Donald Trump advisor support the theory that the vaccines contain microchips to track the movement of the vaccinated, track who has been vaccinated, and possibly influence behavior.
Also feeding the theory is the fact that Bill Gates wanted to give the vaccinated “digital certificates” to identify themselves, and was at one point playing with the idea of injecting people with a “special ink” to make an “invisible tattoo” that would be used to identify the vaccinated without the use of records.
I trust none of these individuals, as each have their own agendas. What makes me skeptical of this theory is that the U.S. government + the corporate powers already track all of us through cell phones and security cameras (fun fact: the U.S. has more surveillance cameras per person than China).
When I took the vaccine out of necessity, I took meticulous notes before and afterwards, documenting my thoughts, opinions, and patterns of behavior. I have not noted any changes.
Finally, C. This one is difficult to prove or disprove, because
1) most people who get vaccinated aren’t going to immediately start actively trying to have babies;
2) fertility rates have been steadily declining for decades;
3) although changes in menstration have been reported after vaccination, the vast majority experienced this as a short term side effect only (I.e, their cycles went back to normal). I had no change in my cycle, nor did my mother.
I will say that I’m not interested in ever giving birth, which is one reason I’m not worried about this- I’m much more inclined to worry about current humans that theoretical future humans.
Now, one thing to note is that reducing the population so drastically is a counterintuitive move for the elites. Less workers = each individual worker is, statistically, less disposable. Less consumers = less consumption.
The only way this theory could be true and make sense is if it’s just the lead up to something else, like lab- based, expensive reproduction to mostly avoid the above, kill off the “undesirables,” and put people in debt whenever they want kids, functionally putting them further under corporate control.
If this was the plan, than the Global Powers That Be (assuming that this was the result of collusion and not China’s attempt at a bio weapon) definitely weren’t ready yet: that kind of technology is available, but not nearly efficient or cost- effective for them to avoid the worker- shortage pitfall yet. Just look at how corporate America has nearly buckled under its own weight at the current shortage of minimum wage workers!
TLDR; the vaccine came from the Wuhan lab and was either a prematurely released bio weapon, the result of epidemiological negligence, or the lead up to some grand conspiracy to control human reproduction, which would be a stupid move on the part of the government- corporate- military complex, and would have required global cooperation and coordination.

Abolishing The Racist European Epistemology
As an Indigenous Austronesian, I genuinely believe that moving away from the Western/European worldview and unlearning Western sociocultural proclivities will lead to a greater, compassionate society... or move forward with an exclusively community-centered, feminist, anti-corporatism worldview that we can all strive to cultivate in current and future generations!
Epistemology is commonly defined as the system of knowing. A civilization’s system of knowing ultimately molds their cultural and socioeconomic system; their entire reality. The European epistemology, and especially the development of European science, has justified the objectification of life, the death of the spirit, and the death of human connection prevalent in ancient and traditional Indigenous worldviews: the spiritual, egalitarian practices of Hinduism and Buddhism, the animism of Shintoism, Native American spiritualism and African polytheism which values all things, animate and inanimate; the reverence-worship of ancestral spirits in the Indigenous Austronesian islands, community-based and matriarchal. Even before the system of knowing, predecessors of modern humanity were altruistic and communal, caring for their sick, elderly and disabled: the natural empathy of a socially and emotionally intelligent prey species.
Accepting beneficial Non-European concepts today and furthering education on the historical and intrinsic value of environmentalism and altruism in Indigenous knowledge is crucial to our survival as an inherently communal species.
Allowing Western society to proceed the narrative of history going forward in 2020 is unquestionably dangerous.
From The Social Epistemology of Morality: Learning from the Forgotten History of the Abolition of Slavery:
“The dominant narratives Western countries tell about themselves is that they took the lead in advancing human rights throughout the world. The West has achieved enough self-awareness to recognize its own capacity for mass human rights violations in slavery, imperialism, the Holocaust, and other crimes against humanity--although it has forgotten many of its crimes. In the dominant Western historical narratives, however, the West has forever been an auto-didact, arriving at the true principles of morality through its own self-sufficient reasoning, figuring out for itself when it has failed to apply them, self-correcting its course, and taking the lead in teaching these principles to the rest of the benighted world. It does not imagine that it had to learn fundamental moral truths from those whom it victimized, particularly not from people of African descent.”
Without context, it already paints a familiar picture of the Western world, and America in particular. With contexts, it explains how Haiti, and Haiti alone, was the first country in history to abolish slavery: “...the site of the only successful slave revolt in world history.”
Today, Haiti’s valiant, winning revolt in the history of slavery in the Western world is not widely known, or known at all.
From the very first chapter of Yurugu--- An African Centered Critique of European Cultural Thought and Behavior:
Indigenous and/or Non-European epistemological systems have always deeply respected the universe and environmentalism: their societal, cultural and architectural structures working with nature, instead of against it. Valuing life, instead of objectifying it.
The Western/European epistemology devalues and neutralizes Indigenous knowledge even as it simultaneously adopts them. From How Indigenous Knowledge Advances Modern Medicine & Technology:
“For centuries, Indigenous people’s lives depended on their knowledge about the environment. Many plant species — including three-fifths of the crops now in cultivation and enjoyed across the globe — were domesticated by Indigenous peoples in North, Central and South America. Corn, squash, beans, potatoes and peppers are just a few examples of foods that now contribute vastly to global cuisine!”
“Indigenous knowledge about the medicinal properties of plants has been instrumental in pharmacological development. For example, as settlers arrived in North America, Indigenous people helped newcomers cure life-threatening scurvy through conifer-needle tonics that were rich in vitamin C.”
Indigenous science and modern science must work together in harmony the the progress towards safe medical treatments and cures.
The death of the spirit, the ushering in of European philosophy: naturalism, individualism, and, ultimately, racism...
The entire concept of racism (and how it became systematic + created the imaginary concept of Race, based exclusively on phenotypical appearances with no scientific basis or evidence of its validity) is part of European and American history. “Black” was initially defined by white people, originated from their European-sourced racism and the White’s obsession with their own concept of whiteness.
From White Supremacy In Eurocentric Epistemologies: On The West’s Responsibility For Its Philosophical Heritage by Björn Freter:
“By reading some of the important so-called enlightened and enlightening [European] philosophers, such as the exemplars Voltaire, David Hume and Immanuel Kant, one can find blatant white supremacist racism. Consequently, it is very likely that their racism affected the construction of their philosophical edifices. However, it seems Western scholarship has demonstrated little interest to address this problem. It is not that the texts I engage here are hidden; at least then I could claim a conspiracy. Rather they appear to be widely intentionally disregarded. If philosophy is to retain its integrity, then a work of amelioration must be done, and these destructive, fracturing epistemologies must be addressed.”
Freter goes on to address the racism inherent in Immanuel Kant’s philosophical work, an influential German philosopher in the Age of Enlightenment; xenophobia is blatantly present in Kan’s work:
“Humanity is in its greatest perfection in the race of whites. The yellow Indians are already of lower talent. The Negroes are much lower and at the lowest there are parts of the American people.”
“Mr. David Hume (an influential Scottish Enlightenment philosopher, also racist) challenges anyone to cite a single example in which a Negro has shown talents, and asserts that among the hundreds of thousands of blacks who are transported elsewhere from their countries, although many of them have even been set free, still not a single one was ever found who presented anything great in art or science or any other praiseworthy quality, even though among the whites some continually rise aloft from the lowest rabble, and through superior gifts earn respect in the world. So fundamental is the difference between these two races of man, and it appears to be as great regarding mental capacities as in colour. The religion of fetishes so widespread among them is perhaps a sort of idolatry that sinks as deeply into the trifling as appears to be possible to human nature. A bird’s feather, a cow’s horn, a conch shell, or any other common object, as soon as it becomes consecrated by a few words, is an object of veneration and invocation in swearing oaths. The blacks are very vain but in the Negro’s way, and so talkative that they must be driven apart from each other with thrashings.”
The compulsory and “pragmatic” dehumanizing of African (and Asian) spirituality/epistemology while ignoring the systematic disadvantages of non-white people is, in itself, racist. It is where such prejudices all began. To consider that racist European philosophies influenced the modern world’s systematic racism... unthinkable? No. Unsurprising. The Western/European epistemology gave birth to racism as it is understood today----- which was “reformed” or replaced through capitalism.
Slavery & Capitalism Are Irrevocably Connected
From The Old World Background to European Colonial Slaver:
Slavery was integral to America’s socioeconomic development, and the socioeconomic development of Europe preceding it. It is an unquestionable aspect of America’s culture and history. The moral monstrosity of slavery permeates every proverbial fiber of capitalism, as they are incestuously connected.
Tipping practices in America can trace its origins to slavery. Wet nursing was primarily done by black female slaves, abused by white upper-class female masters. As slaves became free, those who could not afford to leave the continent were forced to remain in America’s earliest service industries.
From Black Perspectives, reflecting on Eric William’s Capitalism & Slavery:
“At its most basic, (and setting the question of semantics aside for a moment) the Williams thesis held that capitalism as an economic modality quickly replaced slavery once European elites accumulated the vast surplus capital from slavery that they needed in order to bankroll their industrial revolution. After providing the material foundation and the trade infrastructure that fueled Europe’s dramatic transformation towards modernity, slavery, according to Williams, began a rapid decline in the early nineteenth century. As the new global standard of industrial capitalism took hold, Williams found that antislavery sentiment conveniently accelerated in support of an apparently more efficient and less capital intensive method of commodity production. Slavery, in short, was no longer needed. Ideological superstructure followed the economic base. Labor coercion continued post emancipation in the form of sharecropping and wage peonage as former slaves quickly experienced proletarianization. In the end, technological change, modern agricultural methods, and industrial factories supplanted traditional agrarianism and ended the older feudalistic relationships of slavery.Nearly every aspect of this thesis has been scrutinized, amended, embellished, and/or overturned by subsequent scholarship.
Attempts to [describe] the precise features of capitalism and slavery while tracing their relationships to one another over time also proliferated well beyond William’s original set of questions. Perhaps the most sweeping account to recently push outward from the Williams thesis is The Making of New World Slavery (1997) by Robin Blackburn. For Blackburn, slavery not only enabled European capitalism but also the entire cornucopia of European modernity itself. In exploring the interdependence of slavery and capitalism it turns out that, for Blackburn, Williams actually did not go far enough. Blackburn details how a vast cosmos of forces from modern nation-states, tax systems, financial industries, consumer economies, and a host of other political, ideological, economic, and cultural transformations were all built upon the backs of enslaved Africans. Rather than finding a stark shift in the age of emancipation from slavery to capitalism, however, Blackburn describes an ever thickening dialectic between slavery and modernity at large, with capitalism serving as only one of many transformative processes that grew directly out of slavery between the fifteenth and the eighteenth centuries. While Blackburn would argue against the idea that slavery was unprofitable or on a path towards natural extinction at the dawn of the nineteenth century, he does find that Williams was generally correct in describing the role of slavery’s surplus capital in fueling industrialization in the European metropole.”
[...] “By way of a tentative conclusion, slavery and capitalism might best be described as inseparable yet also irreducible to one another. They must be understood as both distinctive yet permanently connected. Certain aspects of each system overlap with one another while other parts of each system seem to stand apart."
Through understanding European’s epistemology and the historical and interconnected contexts of racism, slavery, capitalism, and white privilege in Western development, and the Western world as we know it today, we can learn to deconstruct and abolish it: in our personal lives, and hopefully externally!

The Science Of Sales: Six Ways Salesmen Convince You To Buy
Your mom tells you to go to the market and sell your only cow. As you walk along, you encounter a man who wants to trade you a handful of beans for the cow. "No way," you say. The stranger tells you these are magic beans. You hand over the cow, get the beans, and end up running from a giant in a magic sky castle. As you flee, you think, "How did that guy get me to trade a perfectly good cow for those beans?"
There's a science to persuasion, and if you know how it works, you'll know how to avoid falling for a deal that's too good to be true.
The Classics Never Go Out of Style
Persuasion is deeply ingrained in how societies function. Aristotle described three classic rules of verbal or written persuasion. The first is establishing your credibility and authenticity with your audience, possibly by downplaying your own achievements or identifying common ground. This is essential because if the speaker is not perceived as honest, they have already lost their sale. The second is appealing to emotion, a part of human nature that often trumps logic in decision making. The third rule is appealing to reason, that is, make a valid argument.
Although many people have brilliant ideas and honest motives, not everyone is able to win an audience over through persuasion. This has lead many to dub persuasion as an "art," a soft skill that everyone can study, but few can master. However, scientists and marketing professionals are now discovering that when it comes to persuasion, there are scientific variables at play beyond the clever talking and copywriting.
A Primer on The Science of Persuasion
Robert Cialdini, professor emeritus of psychology and marketing at Arizona State University has identified six scientific principles of persuasion:
1. Reciprocity: This is the feeling that you need to return a favor. Ever wonder why a restaurant might hand out free samples or your cable company might throw in HBO for new customers? Once you've had that first taste for free, you're more likely to start paying.
2.Commitment: Hooked on your daily Starbucks? Paid actual money to see all of the "Star Wars" prequels? Tuning in every week, hoping "The Walking Dead" will figure out where it's going? That's commitment. Once you're hooked on a product, it's easier to keep you paying for it. (Even if that payment is just time.) Commitment also accounts for the low-ball approach you hear from car salesmen. Sure, the car's only $10,000. But there's also this cool stereo and a sun roof and an extra cup holder and taxes and fees and now you're staring at $15,000. You don't back away because you already committed at $10,000. Your mind has a hard time pivoting away from the choice you made to buy.
3. Social Proof: We humans have a pack mentality. Researchers report that hotel guests are 29 percent more likely to reuse their towels if they are told most other guests choose to reuse theirs. The percentage jumps to 39 percent if they're told the majority of guests who stayed in that room reused their towels. This is a key tactic of Great Britain's Behavioral Insight Team, also known as the "Nudge Unit." We don't want to be left behind, so we tend to go with the herd.
4. Authority: If Stephen Hawking told you Skittles made you smarter, you might be more likely to head out for a rainbow-colored sugar rush. Hawking is an expert, and we're more likely to be swayed by expertise. Michael Jordan was the perfect pitchman for athletic shoes and sports drinks. Similarly, Sam Waterston is an expert in robot attacks, which made him an excellent spokesman for Old Glory Insurance
5. Liking: In addition to the opinions of experts, you're more likely to trust the opinions of people similar to you. When that salesperson says you look great in that outfit or compliments your haircut, they're trying to build a rapport. Once you like them, you're willing to trust them.
6. Scarcity: People want what they can't have. That's why we jump to buy limited edition collectibles and overpay for that dream home we just toured. Would the Shamrock Shake or McRib be such a phenomenon if it were available year 'round? Scarcity works via the concept of anticipated regret: we anticipate how bad we'll feel if you miss out on a purchase or experience. Limited time! Act now! Think of all the pumpkin spice flavor you won't be able to savor when spring rolls around!
So the next time you hit the sales floor, keep your ears peeled for these six strategies. Chances are, the sales team will be using at least a few to pry open your wallet.

I don't specifically have a "problem" with GMOs. But I will say that l, for those people who do, their concerns are valid.
Firstly, any new science, and new discovery, and any promises made regarding the potential good should be taken with a grain of salt. This is particularly true when they only mention the good results.
If a person cannot tell me the down sides of their product, whether it is actually a physical thing, or an idea they are trying to sell me on, if they don't know potential down sides, then it is snake oil. It is a scam where we are being told something is only positive. There are downsides for everything.
And a refusal to accept that there might be downsides, without research, smacks of dogmatic thinking, not scientific reason or logic. There COULD be downsides we have yet to see, or consider.
This, by the way, is not hating on GMOs, this is just proper scientific skepticism.
And it is historically validated. Refrigeration improved food storage, and promised to save many lives, but nobody thought it would make a hole in the ozone. Nitrate fertilizers offset famine by increasing crop yield, but also polluted many lakes and rivers. There are reasons to not be hasty.
And, even if I don't have a specific reason to distrust a thing, I should be able to know what I am purchasing, and what I put in my body. I should have the right, as a consumer, to make a decision based on whatever preferences I have. This is especially true for people with health or religion based food restriction. If I had a religion that requires kosher or halal food, and the company selling things refused to tell me whether my self imposed prohibitions were being followed, I would not want to purchase from them.
Now we get into the proper science issues. Hybridization and gene insertion results in many new issues, and we kind of throw the dice each time. Sometimes the results we get are obvious, sometimes not.
The not obvious bits can include carcinogens, allergens, proteins that cause prion diseases that we cannot test for, like bovine encephalopathy, (which is why they will never let me give blood. I lived in Europe during the time that mad cow was a thing, and we cannot test for it in humans, still).
To find out if there are long term potential downsides requires a long study. One of the important bits in scientific research is having a control group.
How can we have a proper control group for GMOs? Labels. Proplery labeling GMOs and checking long term differences between people ingesting zero, people ingesting some, and people ingesting a lot, and seeing if there are any differences.
This is also the only way to see the positives of GMOs. So, without labels, we cannot possibly see the validity of GMOs without labels.
And the reasons why people who oppose labeling are not valid to me.
Outright cost of labels? Well, even fruit is getting labeled currently, so that us part if business as usual. Changing labels happens whenever new legislation happens, so again, part of business as usual, suck it up. And some places, like the EU, require GMOs to be labeled, so having multiple different labels for the EU and the USA, is more expensive. In this way, cutting costs would be done by just putting the label on everything.
But companies are spending millions of dollars fighting legal battles to not have to label their products. Their argument is that if the public knew what they were buying, they wouldn't buy the GMOs. This is not a valid argument.
"if our customers knew what they were buying, they wouldn't buy our product". That is not ethical business, to say the least. That's in fact required for a free market. Give consumers the information and allow them to make their own mind up.
And the fact that companies are spending millions of dollars to prevent their products from being labeled does not speak to the notion that there is nothing wrong with GMOs in general. It lends credence to the suspicion that there may be something wrong with the specific GMOs being sold, something known and covered up.
That doesn't mean that there actually is anything worth covering up. But the way to prove this would be to stop fighting the label. Just allow your stuff to be labeled.
It's good business ethics, it's good science, and it is the only way to verify, to prove or disprove, the worth of GNOs to begin with.
