WIP: Black Wings, Chapter Four (snippet)
Sorry I haven't posted snppets in such a long time. First I've been sick, then I wasn't sure I would continue redrafting this story at this time. I think I will dedicated at least one more month to it, so, here's a snippet of another chapter.
First Chapter
WIP: Black Wings Genre: science-fiction Tag line: Humans’ efforts to terraform a planet are thwarted when some decide to save intelligent indigenous life. POV characters: Kenaed, Zoe Irene, Mattan Nuada, Siesell Keeva Snippet from: Chapter Four, Siesell Keeva's PoV
#.
Scientists in Angerona were grossly underappreciated. Some people thought that only those who constructed modulars, who repaired leaking pipes, or processed food were worth anything. But, for one, there would be no food processing, if the biologist didn’t find a way to transform local biopolymers into simple proteinogenic amino acids digestible to a human being. The machines producing food that they’d taken from the spaceship and installed down here, wouldn’t be able to feed the growing population. And any attempts at growing edible plants in the ground of the habitable zone were slow-going. Besides, they required a lot of help from the scientists, anyway.
Siesell Keeva, an indigenous species specialist, stared at a crystalline structure under her microscope. She prepared it from one of the appendices of a very small shiruken brought into the settlement by the Explorers. The thing – the animal? the plant? who knew? – was alive when they found a bunch of them, but despite having been preserved in the original atmosphere, neither survived the journey. All of the internal structures of those organisms disintegrated very fast and within a few days there was nothing left to analyze. It was hard to say whether larger shirukens would last longer, because no one ever attempted to catch one. All they had were those petite stars that fit on the tip of a finger or discarded – and dead when found – parts of the larger ones.
The crystalline structure conducted low voltages of electricity, quite like human nervous system. Sie'va and her colleagues assumed that it was responsible for transmitting energy from whatever produced it within these organisms, to the appendices, making movement possible.
Nothing more than a theory, at this point.
“Do you think it looks a little like what we sometimes find inside the clams?” Sie'va asked her lab partner Conaire Nuan.
“I’d say comparing the two might qualify as wishful thinking,” Co’Nuan was more careful with her assumptions than Sie'va, which wasn’t bad per se. It stopped her from jumping to conclusions and presenting them as facts. But sometimes it felt like Co’Nuan constantly clipped her wings. Sie'va was impatient. She wanted to discover something important. Something that would change things, help Angerona grow. Perhaps researching indigenous species wasn’t the way toward that goal, but that was what she was good at.
It was a family tradition. Her father and his mother and grandmother before him, were researchers into exoplanetary life. In fact, her father-given name was after her great grandmother Elaine Keeva.
Sie'va had admired her father’s work from an early age, and she had followed in his footsteps. Quite unlike her other siblings. Were they better off for it? Frankly, she had no idea.
“There are some similarities,” Co’Nuan said after a moment. “It’s only natural that whatever biology evolved here, has some similar characteristics. But we don’t have well-enough preserved samples to say for sure.”
"We should go farther out there.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, all we find near the habitable zone are small clams, all sorts of not-moss, and shirukens. Everything bigger dies in close proximity to our atmosphere.”
Co’Nuan looked at her, thoughtful.
It was Sie'va’s father’s theory. Well – used to be. As a young researcher he’d postulated that this planet used to be a place pulsing with rich and abundant alien life. And that terraforming had destroyed most of it. He’d gone as far as claiming that some intelligent species purposefully destroyed terraforming stations to protect themselves and their world.
Had that been true, the human race would have no right to Angerona. Strict rules prohibited terraforming of inhabited worlds. It constituted genocide.
But, had that been true, the two-thousand of humans currently surviving here – and surviving barely – should simply go back onboard their spaceship, and leave. And perish.
“You don’t really want to argue the Legislatives about it?” Co’Nuan asked quietly. Everyone knew about Gwydion Tanner’s old opinions. They had never been popular.
Of course, as he’d gained recognition, Gwydion Tanner had disavowed the notion that Angerona used to be an alien paradise. In line with the official declarations, he agreed that the examples of life were scarce, more an accident than anything else, and perhaps not even alive in terms humans would consider life. No one found any proof of reproductive capabilities, or even individual metabolism.
This change took place gradually, as Sie’va was growing up. When she’d been a little girl, she had those romantic ideals of saving the dragons, fueled by her daddy’s passion. When she emerged as an adult woman, he was one of those who said that dragons had never existed.
And then the Flood happened, and they all had other worries. Which were still at the forefront of everyone’s mind.
Uncovering the mystery of terraforming towers and finding ways to fix them, that was what those scientists who wanted respect, focused on. In truth, the scientists who were truly underappreciated – or disdained, would be a better term – were people like Sie'va and Co’Nuan and their small seven-person lab team. Those who still wanted to research Angerona’s indigenous biology.

Looks like so many US media outlets are currently in a frenzy about the potential existence of UFOs and aliens. I remain skeptical on how hellbent some of the editorials are about the idea of “aliens being kept away from us”. Not only because of the potential of conspiracy theories but also because find it weird that aliens should land only land in the USA of all places as if there aren’t other places on earth suitable to land an UFO unnoticed. Like, imagine the aliens would land somewhere in the Gobi desert and they go absolutely wild about camels or wild ass, and find at every corner a cool fossil. The first people they meet aren’t men in black but some paleontologists. Or they land in Siberia, no humans to be seen for hours. But then they finally do they get stuffed with the best baked goods and booze, and are pushed into a sauna, and then into a freezing lake, rinse and repeat. Local authorities just think their neighbours are at their usual. Or aliens landing in Columbia, and all the local grannies are rushing to make sure these guys get as much good food because after this long journey they must be starving...! The aliens don’t get to ask “bring us to your leader” questions because they either have their nutrition insertion body part full or get asked thousands of questions about their personal life first. Or aliens landing somewhere in in the Swiss alps but the local police would fine the hell out of them because they didn’t not properly park their vehicle, and by the way that vehicle is parked in a nature conservation zone, extra fine. The right wing parties get furious about foreigners now even coming from outer space.
If you’ve any fiction story about the aliens landing anywhere else but modern day USA feel, I’m all reading eyes.
#Lewis babbling#no but seriously what is it about USians being so hellbent convinced they could be the only ones having alien visitors#sci fi stories

BOOK REVIEW: THE FALL GAUNTLET: RAT BY J.A. MERKEL
⭐⭐⭐💫
RAT picks up right where BEAR ended, which is great. As novella-length stories, I wasn’t sure what to expect as the series continued, or how far into the future it might go, so I’m glad no time is lost so far. The second installment provides a closer look at the intricacies of the system and how it continues to affect not just the brothers but others, even when they denounce it.
This one definitely gave me 1984 vibes. It continues to reinforce the police-like state of the society, even when Benji thinks they are on the cusp of escaping it. Learning more about the other sects of people with similar goals to Benji but their own plans, it shows just how long people have been trying to defy the government, and maybe even the investment that’s in store for the brothers. Will they be able to enact change in a shorter time period? I don’t know, but I’m excited to find out.

Black the series: a new sci-fi series from Stefano Labbia is superb!
Stefano Labbia's latest comic series, "Black," has emerged as a groundbreaking venture that is poised to transform the science fiction comics genre. This visually captivating series delves into the adventures of the morally ambiguous anti-hero, Black, as he navigates a dystopian galaxy teeming with peril and chaos. The intricate storyline is woven with complex themes, compelling characters, and heart-pounding action sequences, leaving readers enthralled and on the edge of their seats!
At the core of the series is Black, a mercenary hailed for his unwavering determination to accomplish tasks, regardless of the toll it may take. He embodies a multifaceted persona, flawed yet compelling, unafraid to delve into the murky waters of his craft. Black finds an unlikely companion in Sally, a resilient young girl exuding invincibility and exceptional strength. Serving as Black's moral compass, Sally guides him through the labyrinth of challenging choices he encounters.
Alongside Black is his loyal sidekick, Josh, a witty space fox who injects humor and quirkiness into the series. Despite his adept combat skills, Josh often finds himself entangled in precarious situations due to his penchant for untimely jests. Despite this, his unwavering loyalty to Black stands unshaken.
Enter Raibin, a resolute woman with striking white hair, entwined in a poignant unrequited love tale with Black. Raised as a slave under the tyrannical rule of the Green Pirates, a notorious band of space marauders, Raibin finds solace in Black, her savior turned partner. Her harrowing past adds depth to the narrative, underscoring her steadfast allegiance to Black.
Through its well-crafted characters, "Black" examines profound themes such as morality, loyalty, and the repercussions of warfare. The interstellar conflict has wrought devastation across the cosmos, impacting each character uniquely. Black and Sally share traumatic pasts as survivors of the Silver and Gold interstellar wars, compelling them to flee their homes in their formative years. Raibin's haunting enslavement experience continues to reverberate through her actions, further enriching the narrative tapestry.
Labbia's storytelling prowess shines brightly in "Black," as he expertly engulfs readers within a meticulously constructed universe brimming with intricacies. The amalgamation of riveting action, compelling humor, and nail-biting suspense ensures an immersive reading experience.
In essence, "Black" stands as a remarkable addition to the science fiction graphic novel landscape. Labbia's creative vision has birthed a compelling world and a diverse cast of characters that resonate deeply with readers long after the final page is turned. The allure of "Black" lies in its innovative storytelling, rich character dynamics, and thought-provoking exploration of human complexities – a saga that promises to captivate audiences worldwide.

You were born to be a sacrifice. When you first exited your mothers womb the oracles decided that would be your fate. They tattooed your hands and forehead so everyone would know.
When you turn twenty, they'll take you to the church, and they'll set you on fire. And then when your body is burned they'll give your ashes for the angels, and the angels and saints will be proud, and bless your community and family with great riches. Or at least that's what they say.
When you were young it didn't seem to mean anything that you were born to die young. Nobody cared, they just saw you as another kid. But it was always there. Adults would ask other kids what they wanted to be when they grew up, but they'd ask you what you would do once you were a ruler in the court of heaven. They'd tell other kids about marriage and sex and having children, but for you that would just be for other people, you'd die a virgin.
And at a certain age, you were removed from school. Because they said you wouldn't need it. That you shouldn't be wasting your time on such things. And you didn't understand, but you understood that all your freinds were upset that they wouldn't see you anymore. Not as much at least. And people talked about you so much differently from then on. You weren't complimented as strong, or as smart, or as ambitious, you were pretty, and pure, and brave, and dutiful. And everyone talked about how proud they were of you, how wonderful it was that you were going to die for them.
They were so nice to you. They gave you so many gifts and jewelry. You got to spend all day inside playing video games, and you got the best toys and got to go to movies and plays when you wanted to. Soldiers in power armor would bow when they saw you, and robots and cyborgs would turn off their lights. And you sat at a special place in church, and the clothing you wore was diffrent then everyone else's. And people talked about how wonderful you were, and how pretty you were, and how much they loved having you when they knew you wouldn't be on this world for long. And they were so proud of you when they showed you the platinum clothing you would wear on the day of your sacrifice. And you didn't understand why but all of the compliments sounded sad.
As you grew older things changed. The other children went through puberty, but you didn't, they gave you surgery to prevent it, ans told you how pure you were for not producing blood or seed. And you were old enough to understand that you would die, that you would burn, and it would hurt, and that nobody really knew for sure what happened after peopled died. And you saw a sacrifice, and saw the pain they were in, and there weren't any angels, there were only priests watching and chanting, and the smell of burning skin.
Your parents and family started to care much more how you behave. To make sure you're polite. To make sure you're a good sacrifice, who the angels will like. And meanwhile while all your other freinds are going to college, and talking about becoming artists, or starship pilots, or scientists, you know you'll only ever have one ending. But still, everyone loves you, and you don't have responsibilities, but still sometimes you think about how much diffrent life would be if you were born differently.
You've started meeting people who've left the faith, or people who didn't grow up in it, people who believe in diffrent religions or in no religion at all. And your heaven seems less and less certain every day. According to imperial law you're allowed to be sacrificed, but if you choose not to they can't force you. But if you choose not to you can never be a part of your faith again, and your family will be disappointed in you forever. All your family and community, everyone who you ever knew, will consider you a failure, a coward doomed to hell for not going through with what the cosmos planned for you. And all that pride and joy they felt about your fate would be replaced with anger that you never became what they were so happy and proud about you being. You don't think you believe in heaven anymore, but you still might choose to die, if it means they're proud... it's what you're raised to do, you don't know who you'll be if you choose to leave.
Better choose fast darling, it's only a few months away now. You don't want them to be upset.

I would like to write a book. You know, more than just fanfiction.
I have an idea for a science fiction story. And to be honest, the main characters could be inspired by Aidan and Elly/Rachel's character a little bit (and sure Sam and Bryce's looks). Because I love to write about them.
But I still don't know if I should try it or not.

WIP: Black Wings, Chapter Three (snippet)
WIP: Black Wings Genre: science-fiction Tag line: Humans’ efforts to terraform a planet are thwarted when some decide to save intelligent indigenous life. POV characters: Kenaed, Zoe Irene, Mattan Nuada, Siesell Keeva Snippet from: Chapter Three, Kenaed’s PoV
First Chapter
#.
“I know.” He cut her off. Then, “Sorry,” he muttered.
“What’s going on with you?”
“Nothing.”
Angeline knew him best. They had worked together for six-and-a-half years now. Patrolled the hostile terrain outside the first terraformed zone, at first as part of the Explorer mission. Then Mattan Nuada, Angeline’s partner, organized this thing.
The planet – they called it Angerona, same as the spaceship that had brought their ancestors here, seventy years ago – the planet was fixed for terraforming by Heritage. A powerful interstellar organization which was searching for new systems and planets suitable for human kind to settle. They prepared those planets, changed their soil, water, and air, made the environments survivable for humans. Then, they took people who wanted to leave the planet they had lived on – usually because the planet was slowly losing its human-life-supporting characteristics – and transported them, in stasis, to their new home.
The cost of such operation was huge. Enormous. Kenaed didn’t even fully understand what it would take to be allowed to re-settle and he doubted anyone in Angerona could comprehend it. Only the richest, the best-connected citizens of dying planets could afford it. The rest was doomed to eventually die along with their worlds.
Angerona ancestors refused to agree to that fate. They had learned about this world, packed their belongings onto the spaceship and took up a grueling journey through the vast expanses of space. Five hundred years later the children of the children of those who had started it, had landed on the surface. Their ancestors were heroes and the people here had a home now, thanks to them.
According to the interplanetary laws, though, they were trespassers.
That was a disturbing thought. One that might send Kenaed into a spiral of fear and anger and memories he couldn’t handle.
He had to find a distraction.
“Are we there yet?” he breathed out.
Angeline turned to look at him through the visor of her helmet, troubled by the tension in his voice.
“The next spot is just over that ridge.”
[...]
“Here we are,” Angeline announced. “Are you going out, or should I?”
Kenaed was ready to go, but he hesitated with his palm on the handle. Outside, the heat would be even more unbearable.
“Is it because of that girl of yours?” Angeline asked.
“What? Who?” He turned back to her. “Zoe?”
“Weren’t you supposed to meet her kid last sundown? Did you? That why you’re upset?”
He and Zoe had been seeing each other for almost a boulder-a-round, and she decided it was a good moment to introduce him to her daughter. She didn’t want to wait longer, because, as she said, Maisie’s opinion was a make-it or break-it.
“Yeah, I met her,” Kenaed nodded, “but-- It was fine, there was nothing-- Maisie is a sweet girl. If a four-years-old can be sweet, that is, she’s pretty rebellious.” The memory made him smile. “No, I’m-- It was okay.”
[...]
“I better go,” he forced out. He didn’t like where this conversation with Angeline was going. He trusted her, unreservedly, but he couldn’t talk to her now.
The outside wasn’t as oppressive as he’d expected. The sun had just passed the zenith, so those were the hottest hours, with temperatures rising close to forty degrees. The insulating layers of the EV suits and photochromatic visor cheated his receptors to some degree, making it feel like it was just above twenty. Spending hours inside this rubber-and-polyester tin-can, breathing the filtered air, that was what made it uncomfortable.
Kenaed pulled the containers from the back compartment of the cruiser and, following the indications on his sleeve-screen, found the right spot. Just as he was about to kneel and start digging, he saw movement out of the corner of his eye.
At the same time Angeline screamed in his earpiece, “Keen, don’t move!”
He froze.
