The Magyar invasion of Saint Gall from the Codex Sangallensis 602, manuscript dated 15th C. CE
"According to tradition, Saint Gall, a learned, probably Irish monk and faithful disciple to Saint Columbanus, founded a hermitage on the site that would come to encompass the abbey St. Gall around 610.
The abbey of St. Gall flourished during the Carolingian Era (750-887), emerging as a regional center of learning and trade. Housing one of the first monastery schools north of the Alps, the abbey had grown into a massive monastic center, replete with large guest houses, a working hospital, farms and stables, and a renowned library. The abbey quickly became a magnet for Anglo-Saxon and Irish scholars and monks who copied and illuminated manuscripts. Wealthy nobles, in turn, enriched the abbey through patronization and donations of land. By the turn of the ninth century, the abbey was among the most prestigious and wealthiest in Europe.
Three chroniclers substantiate, in different versions written between 970 and 1074, of a Magyar attack on St. Gall and its environs. The Alemannian Annals, written in the ninth and tenth centuries, mention the Magyars nine times, while the St. Gallen Annals of the tenth century do so fifteen times. The most interesting information about the Magyar sack comes from the chronicle of the monk Ekkerhart IV who lived more than a century after the invasion. According to him, as the Magyars swept through Swabia and entered the vicinity of Lake Constance, Abbot Engilbert took protective measures to ensure the survival of the monastery. He ordered the abbey’s old monks and young students to move to Wasserburg, which lies along Lake Constance and near Lindau, to await the siege. The younger, stronger monks were to seek refuge in the woods and hills near the village of Bernhardzell, to the northwest of St. Gall.
On May 1, 926, the Magyars stormed St. Gall. The attackers advanced to the church of St. Mangen and set it on fire. They also tried to set fire to Wiborada’s hermitage, as they could not locate its entrance. Meanwhile, other Magyar warriors ransacked the monastery, taking what booty they could find.
Despite observing their lust for loot, the chronicles praise the Magyars in their ability to assume battle formation in a matter of only a few seconds, in their use of a sophisticated network of couriers to communicate with troops from afar, and in their mastery of various weapons. Noted further were the Magyars’ love of wine, music, dance, and fresh, tasty, meats.
After a few days of rest, the Magyars moved on to target other Swabian cities, leaving the imbecilic Heribald behind. When the monks and friars returned to St. Gall to assess the damage, they questioned Heribald about what he had seen. He reportedly said, “They were wonderful! I have never seen such cheerful people in our monastery. They distributed plenty of food and drink.”"

An Atlas of Es Devlin, exhibition at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, from November 18, 2023, through August 11, 2024.
It is an understatement to say that the extent of Es Devlin's work is impressive. Some say she might be one of the best Spatial Experience designers in the world, although she goes by the official title of British artist and stage designer.
From top to bottom, left to right: Opening film installation. Exhibition gallery. Model of the Seed, a 15-meter sculpture at the Jubail Mangrove Park, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, 2020. Model of the stage for Atlas, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles, California, USA, 2019. Video of three scale models with projection mapping: Stage for Carmen, Bregenz Festival, Lake Constance, Austria, 2017; Stage for Miley Cyrus World Arena Tour, 2014; Stage for Hello, Adele World Arena and Stadium Tour, 2016-17.
Es Devlin's work is best described in her own words in the exhibition's overture:
Es Devlin's Voice: I've always drawn on my books. I write in their margins, Underline the phrases that resonate,
The play scripts, opera, pop music scores and lyrics, poems, research texts, lists of endangered species and languages.
My markings are a map So I can find my way, Pick up my train of thought Next time I visit.
I've always loved books with printed dashed lines and scissors, Books that invite you to cut and fold, paste their pages - to transform printed text and music into sculpture, To translate Ideas into forms And action.
When I was about 11 years old, I remember walking down a music school corridor. Light and sound emanated through the glass windows of each practice room. I could hear someone playing a Bach cello suite through one window, a Miles Davis trumpet piece through another, a soprano singing Mozart, someone was reciting a Shakespeare text, a guitarist was playing Led Zeppelin.
I observed a shaft of light in the corridor illuminating dust particles in the air, and I thought:
Being here, in the space in between, between music, light and architecture - this is also a kind of practice.
I'm still walking down this corridor now - sometimes alone, often holding hands, running at speed, with choreographers, composers, directors, writers, activists, engineers, and dancers.
We read and draw alone and together, imagining worlds that don't yet exist.
All of the ideas start on a piece of paper like the ones in front of you, in a room like this. We cut and glue pieces of cardboard into sculptures that will be translated into spaces much bigger than this. Sometimes in front of audiences of hundreds, sometimes thousands, or hundreds of thousands.
Every audience is a temporary society, A rehearsal community.
We arrive in one state, Sit or stand close together in the dark for a few hours, Collectively imagining our way into experimental perspectives, Collectively imagining our way into a new world.
We depart in an altered state, the architecture of our minds redrawn by new thoughts and feelings.
Sometimes we use magic and illusion. If we can destabilize our own expectations about how objects behave in a theatre, Then maybe we can start to question our other fixed beliefs. Here, we can rewrite the rules. We can decide together, right now, that this studio wall is not really a wall, but a piece of paper - which we can tear open and walk through together.

THERMALLY ACTIVE SURFACES……a great article by KIEL MOE; you will find a description of the Kunsthaus Bregenz ……
“The art museum stands in the light of Lake Constance. It is made of glass and steel and a cast concrete stone mass which endows the interior of the building with texture and spatial composition. From the outside, the building looks like a lamp. It absorbs the changing light of the sky, the haze of the lake, it reflects light and color and gives an intimation of its inner life according to the angle of vision, the daylight and the weather.”
“While these visual effects of the building are familiar, the thermally active surface system that enables the scheme’s minimalism is less documented. The visual appearance and material presence of the building is best understood as the manifestation of novel immaterial strategies and systems. The Kunsthaus’s architecture emerged from simple yet profound physiological understanding of the body as the context. Like the human body, the Kunsthaus is a hydronic heat and cool system with a decoupled fresh air ventilation system. The concrete surfaces in the Kunsthaus are hydronic, thermally active surfaces that temper the thermal comfort of bodies in the space through radiant heat transfer as opposed to the minimal air system in the building. While this system may initially seem simple, if not mundane, it engenders the austere appearance and low energy consumption of the building.”
KIEL MOE - THERMALLY ACTIVE SURFACES IN ARCHITECTURE
Departing from the simple question Why do we heat and cool buildings with air?, this book focuses on the technique of thermally active surfaces. This technique uses water in building surfaces to heat and cool bodies – a method that is at once more efficient, comfortable, and healthy. This technique thus imbues the fabric of the building with a more poignant role: its structure is also its primary heating and cooling system. In doing so, this approach triggers a cascading set of possibilities for how well buildings are built, how well they perform, and how long they will last: pointing the way toward multiple forms of sustainability.

Hugo Erfurth, Martha Dix, 1922, Oil pigment print. 22 x 16.3 cm. Via Lempertz.
While studying painting at the Fine Arts School in Dresden in 1892, Hugo Erfurth became an apprentice photographer. Two years later, he received a silver medal at an amateur photography show, and in 1896 he took over the studio of Dresden's court photographer. In 1906 Erfurth began to make industrial photographs and photograms. Beginning in 1920, he began to photograph members of the German intelligentsia, and his studio became a meeting place for artists and intellectuals. At the end of the decade, he began to teach advertising photography. During the thirties and forties, Erfurth moved his studio again, first to Cologne, where most of his work was destroyed in an air raid during World War II, and in 1946 to the banks of Lake Constance, which borders Switzerland, Germany, and Austria.

Image of the Week
May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! This photograph shows Kenneth Shiu Kee Ho painting in bed. Ken was born in Hong Kong, and came to the United States in the mid-1940s to study. He was a student at NYU when he was diagnosed with tuberculosis, and was sent to Trudeau Sanatorium in 1946. He viewed his time here as a patient as a difficult period in his life, but it inspired him to apply to UVM to attend medical school. Ken met his wife Constance while studying in Burlington. They faced discrimination as a mixed-race couple, but married in 1956 and moved to Syracuse. Ken took over a medical practice there and worked as a family physician for more than thirty years. He attended a TB reunion held by Historic Saranac Lake in 1980 and enjoyed reconnecting with other patients and his physicians and nurses. He and his wife raised four children and had been married for 60 years when he passed away in 2016.
Last year, Ken's wife Connie and daughter Evelyn visited the museum after donating many wonderful photographs taken by Ken in the 1940s and 50s. We enjoyed meeting them and hearing stories about Ken's experiences as a patient and the impact he made in his community. We're thankful to his family for their thoughtfulness and generosity, and are honored to help keep his memory alive! Learn more about Ken on our wiki: https://localwiki.org/hsl/Kenneth_Ho

What language do they speak in Switzerland?
Switzerland is a country in Europe, bordered by France, Germany, Italy, and Austria. It is a landlocked country and has a population of 8.5 million.
Known for its rich culture and diversity, Switzerland is a home for many languages spoken by its population.
But what are they? How many official languages are in Switzerland? How many people speak standard German or Swiss German?
Let's answer those and many other questions!
What is the Culture of Switzerland?
Switzerland is a country in Europe, bordered by France, Italy, Austria and Germany. The Swiss culture has been influenced by the cultures of these countries.
The Swiss culture is characterized by the traditions of its four national languages: German, French, Italian and Romansh.
The German-speaking Swiss share a common tradition with the Germans in Alsace and Baden-Württemberg in Germany;
French-speaking Swiss share a common history with the French people;
Italians have their own cultural heritage that is different from that of other Italians living outside Switzerland;
Romansh language is spoken only in Switzerland.
The Swiss are said to be punctual and disciplined people who take their time for everything they do. They are also known for their good manners, which can be seen when interacting with others or even when driving on the roads.
How to Speak Swiss-German With a Little Bit of Practice?
Swiss-German is a variety of German spoken in Switzerland, which is largely mutually intelligible with Standard German. It is one of four official languages of Switzerland, spoken mainly in the Swiss Plateau but also on the left bank of the Rhine, around Lake Constance and in Valais.
Tumblr media
The Swiss-German language consists of different dialects and has developed over the centuries. The dialects are so different that it can be hard to understand them when they are not being spoken quickly.
There are many ways to speak Swiss-German with a little bit of practice. One way is by learning basic Swiss-German words and phrases. Another way is by learning how to read and write it properly so that you can understand written texts as well as pronounce them correctly.
How To Speak French In Switzerland?
Learning a language is an investment in your future. It opens up new opportunities, and allows you to communicate with more people. Swiss French is the official language of Switzerland, so if you are planning to visit or move there, then it is important to learn this language.
There are many ways that you can go about learning Swiss French. You can take a course at a school or university, or use an app on your phone like Duolingo. You could also find someone who speaks the language and ask them for help with your pronunciation and vocabulary. But one thing that all of these methods have in common is that they require time and effort from you!
Is Switzerland a Good Country to Move to?
Switzerland is one of the wealthiest countries in the world because it has an advanced economy that relies on trade with other European countries.
It has a high standard of living because its people have access to good education and healthcare services. The median salary for a Swiss citizen is more than $50 thousand per year.
Switzerland is also a country with extraordinarily low crime rate. So, if you want to find a good job and safe place to live, Switzerland is one of the best places in the world to choose from!

Moonlight rippled unnaturally on the lake as the car rounded the curve to the final stretch of dirt road before we reached the township of Elishire. I appreciated the ride–I knew I would have gotten lost in these twisting country backroads. I already longed for the lights and traffic and pavement of my city.
My name is Mary Ingstaff. I am a marriage consultant. I am here to assist with the marriage of Michelle Springs to Ezekiel Banks. I repeated these sentences like a mantra in an attempt to calm my nerves and stave off homesickness. I normally loved traveling for work, but leaving my own new wife at home put a strain on this trip.
If this job works out, Renee and I will be set for a while, I reassured myself, no more out-of-town gigs, no more flights, no more weird little towns. I looked over at my partner, Jake Stevens, who was somehow dozing with his head resting against the cold window. Aside from his many other talents, he was able to sleep anywhere. I’d always envied this ability.
We’d taken this job because of the pay–the entire township was chipping in for this wedding because of…reasons. Ezekiel Banks basically owned this place, so the townspeople had no choice but to contribute. The recent disappearance of his first wife, Constance–whom he’d supposedly divorced before her extremely convenient exit–had put extra pressure on the town to make this wedding special.
Banks’ very young wife, Michelle Springs, was barely out of high school. Poor Michelle, I thought, there must be rumors. There were always rumors in these small towns...

Planning out a fanfic for the Quarry and I keep finding little inconsistent details while playing through the game. Warning: major spoilers, of course. Also sorry for the long post, I'll edit in a line break when I'm on my laptop!
Ryan asks Chris H. his advice about attending an animation school. He never mentions an interest in art/animation before or after that point. Tells Dylan later that he struggles with technology stuff. Not saying you can't be an animator and be bad at technology, but feels kind of odd to me personally.
Emma jumps into the lake without her phone wearing only her underwear and she doesn't return to the dock. She uses her phone later on the island and can take a picture that is used as evidence. If she leaves the island the taser is shown to be unusable due to water. She could have a waterproof phone case, but still weird timeline wise?
If you take the rotor arm Jacob will drop it in the lake. But this is after he jumped into the water in only his underwear. Same problem as before, we don't see him holding it in the water and why did he take it with him at all and not put it safely in his pants pocket on the dock?
Constance drags Laura out of the cellar by her hair. Not saying elderly women can't be physically strong, but she literally drags a struggling grown woman with enhanced strength across the floor one handed by her hair? It's established in an earlier scene that Laura is already experiencing increased strength due to the werewolf infection setting in. She should be able to easily throw off a human of average strength and doesn't?
Same scene: Ryan runs away back through the cellar when Laura is being dragged up by Constance. We cut away to a different scene and when we return Laura is still in the same situation (being dragged) and Ryan is being restrained by Bobby in the dinning room above the cellar. The timeline of character actions is inconsistent. Also: Jedediah wasn't present before the cut and is shown after the cut, same as Bobby.
If Laura, Travis, and Ryan are all alive after Chris is dead and agree to work together Ryan will mention seeing the white wolf near the camp cabins. I genuinely don't know when this is supposed to have happened? I thought the werewolf that attacked the counselors at the radio hut/camp cabins was Caleb? I can't find anything online that specifically says who infected Dylan during that encounter. It's also too dark to really tell if the werewolf Ryan sees can even be described as white in my honest opinion..
Speaking of Silas: why is he called the white wolf when it's always too damn dark to even tell any of the colors of the shown werewolves. The shadows are so intense and they're usually covered in dark blood anyways and I can barely tell the difference between Silas and the others while comparing still screenshots. I don't think he should be like glowing from how pale he's supposed to be, but at least make him light enough to distinguish from a glance? Or use another easily identifiable feature to help the player/audience see how he's different from the others? Idk just seems like build up for something that isn't actually true?
Also isn't Silas supposed to be a child? Or at the very least younger than the rest of the cast. His human model looks at the youngest to be in his mid-teens. Six years have passed since he was last actually seen by anyone, so I guess if he was 9-12 that would make him 15-18 for the events of the game. It's still confusing though because of how little we actually know about Silas and his history.
Abi can be bitten and infected at the same time Nick is. She is always cured, implying that Kaylee was who bit her, who is guaranteed to die regardless of player choices. But the game is inconsistent in how Abi reacts while infected after being bitten compared to Nick's steady transition towards aggression and possessiveness. The writers could just leave it up for the interpretation of the audience about why they act differently (all the characters behave differently from each other while infected), but it still feels like Abi is going through no real changes at all and probably should be displaying some outward signs of the infection setting in.
If anyone has any explanation or proof about who actually bites Dylan in the Radio Hut I'd really appreciate hearing it because I feel like I'm just straight up missing something? I don't know?

Hello, I’m the booty shorts Jacob anon. This is how I imagined it in my head. There’s no werewolves, just summer fun.
Alright, so, I feel like Bobby couldn’t have been always simple. But, he was a standout football player at one point. Travis and Chris were out living their lives while Bobby was at home raking in hometown fame. Everyone thought he was getting out of the town on a huge deal. Concussion turned bad ruined everything and caused Jedediah and Constance to pull their children back into the safety net, that is north kill.
The counselors all still know each other, they still visit north kill for the summer camp. It’s still kinda creepy but the town has been through renovations to pull in college kids and new families.
Laura meets Travis speeding one night, things bloom. He doesn’t take her excuse of her boyfriend… ex boyfriend cheating. But she is drunk, speeding, and behind the wheel of a car. She gets only a speeding ticket but a night in the drunk tank. Her and Travis reluctantly bond because she’s emotional and drunk and latching onto the hot, older cop who’s looking at her like she ruined his night.
Her friends come to pick her up, the ones she called in the morning. Travis is drinking coffee when they barge in, “WHERES OUR FRIEND? WERE FILING A REPORT BECAUSE SHE DIDNT MAKE IT HOME YESTERDAY.” Travis sighed loudly into his cup, “The one that was drunk driving?” Jacob nodded, “Yeah. She was going through something.” Ryan looked at Jacob in disbelief because, “You told a cop she was drunk driving…. Really?”
Travis, sees Laura more and somehow she keeps getting herself in trouble. But he’s starting to realize it’s because she sees him more. Any disturbance, the other officers reach out to him about her, and he’s on the case immediately.
Jacob is a HUGE football fan, so while cruising around the town. He stumbles into some lore and information about the BOBBY HACKETT. “Ryan you know who this is! He was the best two way player ever in high school. He was tight end and middle linebacker. He could catch and he used to pancake people crazy.” Ryan was staring at the pictures in the old diner, “Yeah, that’s Chris’ brother. Our boss-“ Jacob gasped, “Your boyfriends brother… oh my god!” Ryan pulled him down by his collar, “He’s not my boyfriend… shhh. People can hear Jacob. God.” He shrugged, “You have to ask him to introduce me… he’ll do anything you ask. You do anything for him. It’s a favor Ryan!”
They’re working when Ryan broaches the subject about Bobby. Jacob is watching like a madman, he’s like actively drooling. “Uh, so… I heard you talking to someone in your office. Uh, who was that?” Chris raised his brows and smirked, “You heard or were you eavesdropping?” Ryan’s cheeks flushed, Chris waved him off, “It’s fine… uh, my siblings. I think my brothers are on their way. I need help getting the row boats down for the kids tonight. I’m thinking about lanterns and ghost stories on the lake.” Jacob nodded, and held his thumbs up to Ryan and jetted. Ryan cleared his throat when Chris looked at him, “Are you getting out of here too?” Ryan nodded and brushed their hands together. Chris held his briefly to run his calloused thumb against his knuckles. “See you tonight.” Ryan blushed and nodded before following Jacob.
Laura and Jacob had front row seats to watch the other two Hacketts. Travis was in dirty blue jeans, a flannel with the sleeves pushed to his elbows and a white shirt that clung to his body. He held a boat above his head while Bobby was in strapping it. Jacob’s mouth was hanging, Bobby was in his overalls with the top hanging. He had forgone his shirt and his muscled back flexed with each movement. “He’s so big.” Ryan didn’t know which of his friends said it. It was probably in unison. Both Laura and Jacob were drooling. “Please… you guys.”
Travis had dirt and soot on his hands as he tried to rub them clean. “Chris, that’s it?” Chris smiled, “Yeah, T. You guys can stick around if you want to help out. Just take a counselors and they’ll show you what needs to be moved-“ Chris didn’t have time to get it out of his mouth before Laura mumbled about something in the nurses station. He let himself be dragged away. Jacob grabbed Bobby, “Hey uh… we can do this…” Bobby grunted and looked down at him as he wiped sweat from his forehead. “Okay.”
Chris watched his brothers go with them. He put his hands on his hips, “Ryan… do you uh…?” Ryan swallowed, “Jacob knows… about us by the way.” Chris shrugged, “So… unless you care?” Ryan scoffed, “No! I’m just… no.” Chris grabbed his hand and squeezed it, “Good. I don’t care. What I care about is you and your well-being. And I guess I have to care about your friends too, now.” Ryan hummed and leaned into him, “I think Laura is going to have sex with your brother.” Chris sighed, “It wouldn’t be a surprise. I think she left the tree log she was sitting on, wet. She was moaning and gasping at him taking a boat down.” Ryan covered his face with his other hand, “So you know about Jacob?” Chris shut his eyes, “Dear god. Ma and pa aren’t going to like any of this.”
Jacob sat with Laura around the campfire, sometime after 3 in the morning. Ryan joined them in Chris’ sweater that was a little too roomy for him. “So… did all of us get laid?” Laura smiled wide, “Im happy to report that I did. It was amazing. And that man is an animal. I might have to hunt him down for round two.” Jacob grinned back, “So, I didn’t know I was flexible. And uh, yeah, I learned things tonight. He gave me an old jersey after me begging him for that… among other things. Im going to turn it into a crop top, Laura I need help with that.” Ryan pulled on his sleeves as they turned to him. “So?” Ryan shrugged as looked off to the side, “It’s official. And Chris accepted you guys because he thinks you’re going to be around forever…” Jacob hummed, “Cool. This is going to be a fun summer.”

The Mysterious Benedict Society as things teachers at my school have said
Reynie: He's either a witch or a duck. *shrug* Throw him in a lake. See what happens
Sticky: Just shout "anxiety" and run away, they won't follow you.
Kate: Troy. Greece. Canoe. Let's go.
Constance: Learning's stupid! School sucks!
Mr. Benedict: The way to get a 5 on the [AP] Exam is to give a reason. And that reason is Nazis.
Number Two: We're looking for the truthiest answer
Rhonda: You go do that. Find your personal truth by sleeping in your shorts.
Milligan: Why [do birds] stop in America? Just go to Mexico where it's safe. I mean warm.
