Got almost all of my 5th graders into crochet in the last 7 days or so!

I don't crochet but did have a fuck ton of hooks due to well intentioned but poorly researched hand-me-downs.

So I brought those in, along with a bunch of scrap yarn and skeins I was never gonna use, and told them all to use YouTube to try and learn to crochet.

They loved it! the whole class is working on projects now! one kid is just making a fuck ton of tiny little bees! Another is making those "yip yip" pocket things? they are so into it and it makes me so happy.

It's a good parting gift, as I am being moved to a different class for the remainder of summer school. They all get to keep their hooks and their yarn if they want. My last day with them was mostly learning to crochet together and showing off some of my knits :)

This is just a rant and reflection kinda post, feel free to scroll on.

Working in childcare has shown me that it’s hard to actually care about the children. I am 1000% someone who will support teachers and literally anything that benefits the children. But sometimes the children that need the most attention or help are pushed aside by the very adults that are claiming to want what’s best for them. And it hurts me.

Just because a child has different needs than many others doesn’t mean he should be treated less. I work with a teacher that seems to be only looking for the worst in my kiddo I work one on one with. You can’t hold grudges against 5yos just because they came in one day feeling grouchy or couldn’t focus. The first interaction my student has with many of his teachers are reprimands. No gentle redirection, no listening to what he might have to say. Just “stop doing that or I’m calling the office!” And then he gets to sit and not do work while missing his class time.

You can’t have a productive relationship with a child you have no friendly relationship with. Why would they listen to you? Why should they follow your rules? You can’t just place demand after demand, giving little to no praise and reinforcement, and expect the child to love you. There is nothing to work on if there is no foundation of a relationship.

There is a reason behind every action. Every behavior has a function. Every child learns differently. Teachers have a tough job.

It’s also a tough job to be the only support for a child who should have a school system, classroom, and family to rely on.

It breaks my heart to make small steps of progress just to see them pushed back to the starting line by the very people who are supposed to be cheering them on.

I wish I could just look at this as a job. But I can’t. It’s not fair to the child to only be viewed as a paycheck. I love them and I want them to succeed with every fiber of my being. But I can’t do it alone.

If my mom sees a significant amount of blood she gets lightheaded, and has fainted on some occasions. Once it happened when we were kids, I wasn't there to witness it but I heard the story from my dad. Basically my brothers, around 7 or 8 at the time, were playing outside while my mom was making their lunch, and she accidentally cut her finger. It wasn't anything serious, but it drew a fair bit of blood and she passed out. My dad saw this and rushed over, but he didn't really know what to do so he just sort of started slapping her to wake her up (not recommended, but he had no idea and panicked)

At that exact moment my brothers both came in from playing, and all they saw was our mom unconscious on the floor and our dad slapping her. So, like, without even saying a word to each other they both just INSTANTLY start whaling on him, like, full blown attack mode to defend our mom. Which obviously didn't help the situation, but she did wake up and everything was fine.

Now our dad says that he's actually really glad they attacked him over what they thought was going on, because it means he raised good boys. And I still think that's true, they're very good boys.

Guess I completely forgot to mention that I have a new job; it being in the school system as a Paraeducator (for a nearby middle school). It’s been very insightful as to how I work in social situations as I haven’t really had that in my previous jobs/ workspaces.

Hints why I haven’t been too active in here in a while. I began in late August and made it through the first quarter. So now I can kinda give myself more free time with my schedule worked out.

PSA for incoming grad students:

You’re about to enter into an abusive, dysfunctional relationship with your field. You will be managed and supervised by people who have no business interacting with other humans. Your academic future may end up in the hands of someone who hates you and will never tell you why.

Some advice:

-have friends and a support system or prioritize having friends and a support system outside of your department. It’s way too easy to get sucked into departmental gossip and drama and before you know it you’re gossiping about how N fucked A’s husband on the couch in the grad lounge and celebrating your thesis defense by shotgunning beer with the guy you’re in a situationship with and some of the “cool kids” while listening to Green Day (I love Green Day)

-yes there are “cool kids” and cliques and social hierarchies in grad school. That shit never goes away

-don’t have casual sex with people in your program for the love of god. Or at least, only do it if both partners are mature humans with good communication skills.

-these people will be your colleagues forever and academics hold GRUDGES

Don’t go in without SEVERAL plans for:

-what you will do when there’s no stable job market after graduation

-what you will do if the program destroys your mental health

-what you will do next if you decide that academia is not the right path for you

I truly, TRULY do not know how to say this, because the fact that I have to say it makes me feel like I am losing my grip on reality.
