the untapped potential of exploring the craziness of Miya Girls
#i get why kamikou gets so much love i get it but. they literally have emu. there are 4 idols in their school.#there is a band that is going pro. one girl drastically changed her appearance like a month into her first year#and started hanging around 3 kamikou kids (and chased one around at the culture festival which got into the school newspaper)#and maybe joined a gang (shoutout that one petit sekai episode). and Mafuyu Asahina is there#kamikou is wild because everyone there is a freak just casually but miya girls exists on some plane of typical cartoon high school bull#which we need to see more of i think. the two schools are wild in their own ways#also i'm kohane biased and think her arc in the context of no one else from miya girls really. knowing what's going on?? is hilarious#but that is why natsumi shimada exists. and therefore dreamy_harmomics as it is. everyone say thank you kohane azusawa#bagel's rambles

Just saw a girl getting on the bus with an axe. A real axe, the metal is covered with a flimsy semi transparent plastic bag.

Ballet Without Borders
‘The prototype of a classical ballet dancer usually does not fit the characteristic physique of Peruvians: neck, trunk, arms commonly short, short stature … that should not be a stigma or a barrier.’ This is how Maria del Carmen Silva, a retired professional dancer, explains why she started a ballet school for girls whose families could not afford classes. She wanted to break away from stereotypes and make it inclusive, regardless of money or physique. Currently, 13 girls from the low-income areas of Lima receive free classes at Mari Carmen school

THANK YOU FOR EXPLAINING DUX IN THE TAGS!!! I pulled up the captions and it said "ducks" and I cautiously googled "ducks....? australia?????" I didn't even THINK about using an X, thank u
No worries! It's a very Antipodean/Commonweath term, originally from scottish educational insitutuion iirc.
(for those who didn't see my tags, to be 'dux' means one is the highest academic achiver in your graduating year. Phoebe being her grade's Dux is deeply informative to her character, given she was a scholarship kid, her mum had cancer while she was going to school and modern her techy, workaholic tendancies. it's also interesting how all of these things intersect with her Aboriginality. It's great and it's why Phoebe is my favourite character)
In general, the subtitles for Class of 07 are very Wrong in a quiet a few places (i wonder if they just put all the finished episodes through an AI transcriber and had some underpayed transcriptionist to edit it to the best of their ablity :/). The most stand out one imo is in second last episode where sister bickey says Laura was involved in the 'rock is dead vid' when it should be 'Rock Eisteddfod' (an interschool dance and drama competion in the eastern states of Australia), which is both a Very Funny mondegren, but also hurts my welsh heritage soul lmao
this video is an exampe of what a Rock Eisteddfod entails:
#class of 07#class of '07#ask#i'm in Western Australia so we dont have the rock eisteddfod itself But my school did the catholic performing arts festival#also my school did an internal rock eisteddfod thing called a 'mock rock' in your final year for your school house#my house did a retelling of the lion king i was rafiki#i really need to finish my 'aussie guide to class of 07' that goes through a bunch of the cultural references

I'm so excited that Holi is starting to become a more widely celebrated holiday here. A few years ago Diwali was the only South Asian holiday that had a town sponsored event but now Holi is becoming more known and there are at least three different events that I can think of happening soon!!!!
#I went last year for the first time and saw some friends from school and tried paneer for the first time it was so fun!!!#I didn't participate but I did walk around with my parents#I LOVED SEEING ALL THE COLORS#maybe I will play this year. I do not know#Are the colors hard to get out?#I know that one of the Holi events is sponsored by the town and is a dry Holi so you can't bring water toys#But the Holi event sponsored by the university says you can bring water toys#some of my relatives do not celebrate Holi but I do not know why#our ancestors were from the South of India#Google isn't giving me answers so do any of y'all possibly know?#I love going to cultural festivals#holi#desiblr

The 2024 GCHQ Christmas Challenge Launches Tomorrow!
One government agency in England celebrates Christmas a little bit differently than most. The GCHQ — or Government Communications Headquarters — provides security and intelligence services for the British government. Back when they were known as GC&CS — Government Code and Cypher School — they were responsible for funding Bletchley Park and its successes cracking the German “Enigma” code during…

The word 'rural' is in the public consciousness again and every time people start going in about the 'rural values' 'rural way of life' I remember just how subjective that word is.
I have a friend that lives in LA. He considers Columbus, OH to be 'rural.' A population of over 900k. Thriving arts community, tons of culture festivals, every kind of restaurant you can think of, one of the most annoying college campuses ever, several smaller colleges, lots of queer spaces, comic book conventions, huge concerts... rural.
The town I live in considers itself 'rural.' 38k population. Arts festival every year, a small pride celebration, monthly gallery hop, big Halloween festival. Five ice cream shops, three coffee shops, a couple fancy bars, so many grocery stores. Huge library, conservation and sustainability advocates, queer spaces, a hospital, one private college. Rural.
The town we nearly annexed, but lost the deal considers us 'urban' compared to them. Less than 5k. They have a limited hospital, often send their surgeries here. Downtown has hardware store, bars, craft supply store, a couple grocery stores, pizza places. There's some farmland, but much of the square acreage is golf. Mega churches. The houses here are 500k. Most people drive ATVs. They have a handful of festivals in the summer.
A town I would often get sent to to cover their high school sports- a little over 2k. There's a Subway, a Domino's, Family Dollar. Some bars, some corner stores. Some local crafts. All the students grow up knowing each other, most of them stay there. But they have craft fairs and art galleries, still.
Less rural still than the town I go through to get there, population of around 600. Houses, farmland, post office, general store.
Who would still look down upon the town of about 400 that I would go to sometimes- post office. Gas station. Bar. The school is the only big thing there.
And yet still, I have seen towns with population in the double digits that have a church and a post office.
Even just looking at the numbers doesn't lend accuracy to what 'rural' actually looks like. Because this is what it looks like in ohio, but it's different in West Virginia- where your closest neighbor might be a mile down a hill. Or in Montana, where your town might be planned very tightly and your neighbors are very close, but the nearest grocery store is an hour and a half away. These are places I've been, friends that I've talked to. I've never been to Missouri or Alabama or Louisiana- I'm sure they have a unique experience of being 'rural.'
So my point is that when people talk about 'the rural experience' or 'rural values,' they are talking about millions of people across the entire country who all have lived unique lives- and who may not even agree on what 'rural' is.
Think about who is talking, and who is being talked over, and who isn't even being asked to join the conversation.
