Latin dancing, Indian butter and American soldiers are some of the clues for this year's cryptic Christmas challenge set by the national spy agency.

GCHQ's annual brainteaser comes in the form of the agency's Christmas card, sent by the intelligence organisation's director Anne Keast-Butler.

This year's puzzle challenges the public to decode the names of UK landmarks, testing skills like codebreaking, maths and lateral thinking.

The deceptively tricky tasks require ingenuity and perseverance, GCHQ said.

Neben ihrer üblichen Tätigkeit der Aufklärung sind die NSA und ihre westlichen Verbündeten scheinbar auch schwer mit dem Vernebeln und Manipulieren der Realität beschäftigt.

Infiltrieren, kontrollieren, manipulieren

Das behauptet Glenn Greenwald unter Berufung auf Dokumente unseres Ehrenmitglieds und NSA-Whistleblowers Edward Snowden. Diese hatte der US-Fernsehsender NBC in den vergangenen Wochen enthüllt. So gibt es Dokumente, dass

der GCHQ falsches Material ins Internet lädt, um die Reputation einer Zielperson zu zerstören,

"Honey traps" einsetzt, um jemanden zu bestimmten Seiten im Internet zu lotsen,

falsche beziehungsweise rufschädigende Informationen können auch direkt an "Kollegen, Nachbarn, Freunde etc." gemailt werden.

Das heißt, mit Online-Techniken wird etwas in der digitalen Welt ausgelöst, um etwas in der realen Welt zu verändern. Diese Dokumente erweitern die Aussagen von Snowden aus dem Jahr 2013, die davon ausgingen, dass der NSA (und ihren Verbündeten) nichts im Internet entgeht. Nun muss man davon ausgehen, dass westliche Geheimdienste weite Teile der Online-Infrastruktur unter ihre Kontrolle gebracht haben.

Es geht ihnen also schon lange nicht mehr nur um das Überwachen, sondern um Kontrolle.

Death of a Codebreaker

Trevor Noah is right: we should all have a couple conspiracy theories that we believe in. He's right about a lot of other stuff too, but l need an excuse to post this.

I'm already on the final episode, and I know there's not going to be any definitive answer about what truly happened to Gareth Williams, because I've read just about everything John le Carré has written and I recently finished Mick Herron's Slow Horses book series. Obviously, these feats make me an expert on British Intelligence, even leaving out my extensive knowledge of James Bond (books and films). The point being that if the intelligence services are involved, then you might as well make up your own solution, because that's about as close as you'll get to the truth.

So, by the time I finish the final episode, I hope to have an intriguing, new conspiracy theory to add to my repertoire. . . because one bit of this is straight out of Mick Herron's Joe Country.

“GCHQ, or Government Communications Headquarters, first said it was looking to recruit more neurodiverse men and women in 2019, but has now backed a call for women in particular from this group to apply. The Cheltenham-based agency focuses on counter-terrorism, cybersecurity and organised crime.

Jo Cavan – GCHQ’s director of strategy, policy and engagement – said: “Neurodiversity is key to keeping Britain safe. At GCHQ, some of our most talented and creative people have a neurodiverse profile – including dyslexia, autism, dyscalculia and dyspraxia [conditions that affect the ability to process different forms of information].

“Having a diverse team and a mix of minds better equips us to carry out our mission and tackle new and emerging threats posed by terrorists, criminals and hostile states.”

Theresa Palmer – head of diversity and inclusion at BAE Systems’ digital intelligence division – said cyber industries could benefit particularly from neurodiverse workers.

“Female talent is among the varying types of neurodivergent people we are looking to attract,” Palmer said. “Varying ends of the spectrum offer opportunities across our products and services ensuring that we take the broadest, most common and unique views of the world into account.

“Some benefits of our employees’ differences are better pattern recognition, trending, creativity and innovation.”
