I got a new schmincke watercolor palette and decided was the perfect opportunity to do a color chart and discover all the color mixes at my disposal 😍. I used Fabriano hot press for the first time as well! I looove the pastel hues that came out of this!

I realize this is not of general interest, but for anyone into watercolors—I tested out this Schmincke set I bought for myself for Christmas 😒. Here’s the mixing chart with names & pigments (I didn’t mix the metallic gold):
Tumblr media
The pros: a really nice color selection—including warm & cool versions of each primary. Schmincke watercolors rewet and flow nicely, a happy medium between super-sticky brands like M Graham and somewhat-hard brands like Daniel Smith & Qor. Ultramarine Finest is my new favorite from the 8 or 9 different ultramarines I own. Without the metal pan holder, a bunch more pans could fit in the box.
The cons: it’s only 12 colors (really 11, minus the gold), so lots of mixing. The transparent ochre is a great hue but has a weird texture—feels like a lot of binder. As far as environmental impact and/or toxicity, the set has two cobalt AND two cadmium colors (plus Schmincke uses ox gall in their watercolors, a byproduct of the beef industry).

Finally cracked open this Schmincke Horadam Aquarell set of 8 in a metal travel box. I tried putting water in the little flask part. It doesn't come out very well, and the box is so heavy anyway. And the mixing area is small. For the color chart, I used a larger plastic palette. Anyway, sharing my color chart if anyone wants it. Color chart was done on Strathmore windpower watercolor paper, cold press, acid free, cellulose. (I tend to save the cotton paper for other purposes.) @schmincke_official #schmincke #schminckehoradam #schminckewatercolor #strathmorepaper #strathmorewatercolorpaper #strathmorewindpower (at Dallas, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ6iiLSnRF5/?utm_medium=tumblr

Kolibri - This is probably not a very well-known brand, especially not outside of Germany. However this small family company has been making brushes for a long time. They have a small line of Kolinsky Sable brushes, called their gold line, which is an amazing value for the money. Some even say they are better than the Winsor and Newton Series 7s! Most cheap Kolinsky Sable brushes are not worth your time or mine, but these are excellent and I use them daily.

Today we take a look at a couple of Royal Talens products- Rembrandt Professional Deluxe Watercolor Box Set– 24 half pans with red sable size 6 brush, tube watercolors, and Ecoline liquid watercolors.  This post is heavy on the pan set, with a quick look at the tubes and Ecoline. I started off just writing about the box set, but then the other stuff showed up, so I added those in- it’s not a short post. I’ve used Rembrandt soft pastels, which are lovely, this is my first experience with their watercolors. Rembrandt is one of our sponsors for World Watercolor Month, and they provided really nice prizes. Today we start off with a little about the company and then move on to the paints.
Sometimes reviewing art supplies is like going on a virtual trip around the world.  Some people find that part interesting.  If that’s not you, skip down to the paint part.
Royal Talens was founded in the Dutch city of Apeldoorn in 1899.
“Royal Talens is a household name among artists. We are the team behind the well-known brands Rembrandt and Van Gogh, as well as new innovations such as  Cobra.  Our company has been manufacturing professional-grade artist’s materials since 1899. But did you know that we weren’t always Royal?
That’s right! It wasn’t until 1949, thanks to The Netherlands’ Queen Wilhelmina, that we became Royal Talens. So what exactly does that mean?  In order for a Dutch company or manufacturer to receive the Royal designation, it must be at least 100 years old and hold a position of importance in its field and in the nation.
Queen Wilhelmina, monarch of The Netherlands from 1890-1948, was an artist and a known fan of Talens, and used our products on a daily basis. This made her feel closely connected to Talens, a company that represented her two greatest joys: art and her nation.
She wanted to share this love with the rest of the world. So, in 1949, she made Talens Royal, because Royal Talens has the same passion artists have… not to create the most beautiful work, but to produce and develop the best paint and artists’ materials. Thanks to this great Queen, we are proudly known around the world as Royal Talens.”
Paint part-
Bravo- this is a smart set!  The packaging the set came in is simple and elegant.  The whole set has a quality feel to it.  It came with a real red sable size 6 pointed round brush.  It’s a nice brush.  A common complaint of many a watercolorist is that most sets include a white and a black- which most of us don’t use. No white or black in this set- all usable colors!  There are a lot of bright cadmiums.  Every color in the box has their highest lightfast rating. The inside tray is removable.
Both swatch samples done on  90lb Arches cold press paper.
Regular swatch-
Cadmium Yellow Lemon (207), Cadmium Yellow (208), Gamboge (238), Cadmium Yellow Dark (210), Cadmium Orange (211), Cadmium Red Light (303), Cadmium Red (306), Permanent Madder Lake (336), Mauve (532), Ultramarine Dark (506), Cobalt Blue (511), Cerulean Blue (534), Prussian Blue (508), Permanent Green (662), Viridian (616), Hooker Green Dark (645), Sap Green (623), Yellow Ochre (227), Burnt Sienna (411), Burnt Umber (409), Raw Umber (408), Sepia (416), and Payne’s Green (708).
Odd little swatch- dry paper on the left wet in wet on the right. The Cadmium pigments are rated as semi- transparent, along with the Cobalt and Cerulean Blues and Payne’s Grey.
Pigments are listed- tiny like, on the half pan wax paper wrappers.  I wrote the color names on the half pans with a Sharpie. The three +++ signs on the wrappers are the lightfast rating.  There are 80 colors in the Rembrandt line, and all but two have the highest lightfast rating. Those two are the usual culprits- Madder Lake Deep and Alizarin Crimson.
Rembrandt watercolor chart here.  From the Royal Talens North America site:
“For a binder, we use only the best, purified natural gum arabic dissolved in water.  This binder gives the colors a creamy feel and superb color release.  It also provides a slow, easy flow which deters backwash, penetrating the fibers of paper slowly and evenly.  A fluent transition from full-bodied color is virtually guaranteed.
Our color palette is known for a wide range of saturated earth oxides, which provide a striking warmth and are superior for building tones in transparent washes.  Also remarkable are the strong, robust true cadmium and cobalt colors, as well as a breadth of greens which will cover all of what is seen in nature, or that inspires your imagination.”
At first I thought the Viridian PG18 a little on the weak side, maybe because I’ve heard/read other people make that comment. Many pan sets that I’ve come across have Viridian Hue, which I don’t like- it often looks synthetic.  PG18 is the same pigment used by Daniel Smith and Winsor & Newton for their Viridian.  Below I did a comparison with Daniel Smith and couldn’t tell difference between the two.  I found the Viridian to be lovely.  Viridian is a slightly granulating pigment.
I’ve read comments where some people consider the Raw Umber to be on the weak side. I also did a comparison between Rembrandt, Daniel Smith and Schmincke.  They all use the same PBr7 pigment.  The Rembrandt has a more golden tone.
One quick example on Arches 140 lb cold press.  The Sepia is an intense lovely color.  I used that in the mountains. Because the Sepia is an intense brown, I appreciated that the Raw Umber has a golden tone, they seem to balance each other out in the set.  The five earth tones in this set are distinct from one another and all very usable.  I used some gold in the sample painting that was not included in this set.
I found this brand to be vibrant and transparent, and very nice to paint with.  The fact that it has 24 usable colors- no black or white, is a plus.  I really like this set.  I feel like I finally have a travel palette that I like, and can grab and go and not worry about fiddling with and switching things out.  It also minimizes the need for mixing for some colors, which I consider a plus.  I’d rather spend my time painting than mixing for colors, I also like to let them mix on the page.
The Rembrandt watercolor line comes in 5 ml, and 20 ml tubes (that’s a lot of paint), individual half pans, and tube sets. Half pan sets come in 12, 24 and 48, in tins and some lovely wooden boxed sets.  I’ve seen the pan sets range from $54 for the set of 12 up to $376 for the set of 48.  Do an internet search to find the best deals- you know how it is, some retailers are better at pricing than others.  I found some stellar deals in the UK, as well as some of the really nice wooden box sets. If you are not in the UK, it might still be worth ordering from there, depending on the conversion rate.  Shipping is so expensive in the US these days, that I haven’t paid much more, if at all, ordering from the UK.  Here is a link to all the Rembrandt sets and products.
In the photo below I filled a little tin with their tube watercolors.
The tiny swatch is 16 of their colors. Click to enlarge and eyeball.  In order of appearance on swatch:
Permanent Lemon Yellow, Gamboge, Azo Yellow Deep, Quinacridone Rose, Perm Madder Lake, Permanent Red Light, Permanent Red Deep, Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Blue, Prussian Blue, Ultramarine Deep, Permanent Green, Hooker’s Green Deep, Transparent Oxide Red, Yellow Ochre, Vandyke Brown.
Ecoline
A quick exploration of Ecoline– super vibrant dye based liquid watercolors that come in jars and brush pens. A blender brush pen is sold.  They can also be blended or diluted with water. The brush pens are juicy with springy pointed tips. Because they aren’t lightfast, they are marketed to be used in product design, illustrations, fashion design, and calligraphy- so basically things that will be reproduced and not hanging on a wall. Ecoline comes in brush pens in 29 colors, and 30 ml bottles in 48 colors. Click here to see the line and here to see a color chart.
The three primaries- lemon yellow (205), magenta (337) and sky blue cyan (578) from this line would be great to have. This color triad is often referred to as CMY.
I shared this article from the John Muir Laws site some time back and it’s worth sharing again: Reinventing the Wheel: Why Red is not a primary color.  Here is another article that looks further into the same theory- from Handprint.com. Doodlewash Guest Artist Jane Blundell has a bunch of watercolor triad examples here.
Sometimes the muse just isn’t there, so I’ve got these quickies on a few varieties of paper- Strathmore mixed media paper.  I wet the paper first, they blended beautifully.
Tomoe River paper, and Arches cold press watercolor paper in the next examples. I will continue to use these in my art journals because they look super vibrant and lovely, and lightfastness in a journal isn’t an issue.  If you have a Hobonichi…these are great in that and are much more vibrant than how they showed up in that photo on the left. If you like to sketch and then wash the lines out, the brush pens work for that.
This is printed on the bottom of the pan set box:
“Looking at the world behind the reality.  Feeling how the elements adapt to a single will. Working with colours and techniques that give shape to this deepest of inspiration.  That is art.”

I want to thank Royal Talens for the opportunity to review their watercolors.
July has been an incredible month of celebrating watercolor!  This will be my last review for a few weeks. My plan is to be back at the end of August with one more review.  I usually have sneak peeks, or additional photos on my Instagram account- @jessicaseacrest.
One thought I’d like to sign off with- if you are new to painting, new to watercolor- you can so do this!!!  Just get in there and start painting 🙂
Happy painting.

Today is opening day of World Watercolor Month™ in North America!  Friends in other locations around the world have already started- yay!  To spread some festive watercolor cheer I’m here with this post on the new custom curated Schmincke Horadam watercolor set from Wet Paint.  Square palette boxes are not always available.  This was like finding a palette unicorn, so I ordered it. There is also a little show & tell about the 35 new colors that Schmincke released in 2017 for their 125th anniversary.
I’ve written before about the store Wet Paint, located in St Paul, MN.  Every experience I’ve had with them has been wonderful.  They have a large and diverse selection, and carry interesting papers, sketchbooks and journals- including ones that seem hard to find, unique, or uncommon in the US. They carry those nice Hahnemühle Nostalgie & Watercolour sketchbooks. Their staff has always been genuinely helpful and friendly.  I especially want to thank Kate, who helped me when I goofed up my order.  They have free shipping for orders over $99 in the continental US.  I’ve always received my order within a few days of placing it, and I’m nowhere close to MN.  My experience with some larger online art supply retailers, is that it takes much longer to receive an order.  If you want something quick, I would definitely give WetPaintart.com a try.
Normally I go on and write about the companies or makers, but in the interest of keeping this short(er)- you can read all about the “125 Years of Schmincke Horadam Watercolours” in this Jackson’s Art blog post here.  It’s short and interesting, and goes on to tell about family, paints, war, their use of ox gall, and how their owl logo has changed over the years since 1881.
Since 2011, Wet Paint has been releasing custom Schmincke sets.  All that info can be found here.  This year’s set contains five of the new colors released in 2017.
The 2017 botanical set was curated by Marilyn A. Garber, founder of the Minnesota School of Botanical Art at Longfellow House in Minneapolis, MN.  It came with one of her small botanical prints.
Although there are stickers on the bottom of each half pan with a number, there are no color names on the pans.  I usually write those on with a Sharpie.  In my experience, the stickers fall off. There is a ring on the bottom of the palette and the inside tray is removable.
215 – Lemon Yellow 220 – Indian Yellow 483 – Cobalt Azure- NEW 493 – French Ultramarine Blue- NEW 482 – Delft Blue 940 – Brilliant Red Violet 910 – Brilliant Blue Violet 524 – May Green 784 – Perylene Green- NEW 349 – Cadmium Red Light 343 – Quinacridone Red Light- NEW 346 – Ruby Red Deep- NEW
Since this is a botanical set, it didn’t have any earth tones.  I ordered three individual half pans of the new colors. Those were going for around $10 and up- Rutile Yellow, Green Umber, Transparent Sienna.  I ordered an empty Schmincke half pan- $0.90, and added in Cadmium Orange from a tube that I already had.  Empty Schmincke anything- pans, tins, are expensive, but I wanted it to look consistent- matchy matchy.  Swatch done on Arches 90lb cold press.
There were two duplicates in this set from a previous set that I have- Lemon Yellow & Cadmium Red Light. I still ordered it because of the box, and the pans are cheaper per pan price in a set.  $69.95 for the 12 half pan set, that works out to be less than $6 a pan.  An empty Schmincke tin, not including empty half pans, starts at over $40, so if that price is deducted then the watercolor pans drop down to less than $2.50 a half pan.  I don’t know if I’m writing this bit to be informative, or justify this purchase to myself, or to help you justify a purchase- perhaps it’s all three.
$40+ for an empty metal palette does not seem reasonable to me.  Here is a link to a post that goes over some different options, and more reasonably priced empty rectangle watercolor tins/boxes. There seems to be lots of options out there these days.
A simple and quick little example on Fabriano Artistico 140lb paper using- Lemon Yellow, French Ultramarine, Delft Blue, Brilliant Red & Blue Violets, May & Perylene Greens, Cadmium Orange, and Green Umber. I love these colors!
One more small example, it’s on Arches 140lb cold press. The Rutile Yellow in the foreground- love it!  World Watercolor Month- one down!  30 more to go 🙂
If you want this set- order it now.   They go fast!  Happy Independence Day- this weekend they have a shipping promo- “WEEKEND SHIPPING PROMO: Free standard shipping on orders of $17.76 or more!  Valid 6/30 thru 7/4, 2017.”  Yes!
The palette fits in one of these nylon MochiThings Better Together Note Pouch V3– outer dimensions in inches: width: 5.3″, height: 8.9″, depth: 0.8″, inner dimensions: 4.9×8.3 inches.  I like this zipper pouch for a small travel set-up, but it is way overpriced- about $31. I bought it when MochiThings had a sale. Similar things can be found on Amazon and other places for way less, it just takes a bit of sleuthing.  Often pouches/cases that fit Kindles or iPad minis will work.  I was able to fit a couple of travel brushes inside the palette (click to enlarge).
Jackson’s Art in the UK, came out with this special edition “Schmincke: Horadam Watercolour: Porcelain Palette Metal Set: 12 Half Pans” set for £58.
A post on another Schmincke set can be found here, along with extra colors added in.
Kate at Wet Paint sent a Dot Card of the 35 new Schmincke colors for 2017 to present for this post.  Thanks again Kate! 32 of the colors are single pigment.  Brilliant Opera Rose is a fugitive pigment- across all brands. Click the photo to enlarge, zoom in and eyeball.
This is a link to the color chart of the 35 new Schmincke Horadam Watercolours, which includes lightfast, transparency, and staining qualities.
Doodlewash Guest Artist Jane Blundell wrote this post on her blog with all of the new 2017 colors swatched, along with her insights and pigment info.  If you are into pigment info, Jane is a great resource.
Creative expression is important, it helps us to know ourselves better. I write art supply posts with the intention that they will be helpful to other artists and creative folks.  And for those that have that inkling that they are creative, that they are artists- you so are! Go ahead, let it out! Grab hold of that artistic inkling, that wave, and ride it for all it’s worth- it’s showing up because it wants to be expressed through you! You know that expression- dance like no one’s watching? Paint, sketch, and create like no one’s watching- do it for you. Do it for the joy it creates in your heart and watch that spread to others! When I was first figuring out watercolor, I relied on the generosity of others sharing what they were using and discovering, and I still do. I’m figuring this stuff out for myself anyway, so I figured I may as well share the information love, and pay it forward. Occasionally a company will send along a product for review, and I present those too.  Otherwise I’m presenting from my own exploration- because I am riding that artistic wave that showed up for all it’s worth. Truly- it was like it just showed up one day and said “paint me,” and it would not be ignored. Then it said “write me,” and here we are. There are many other art supply reviews available on Doodlewash.  Click on “Reviews” at the top of the site or click here.
Thank you for taking the time to read this review.
As you can see from the desk photo above, I’ve been busy- I’ll be back next week with another one!
