Morrigan, Dragon Age Inquisition
Tumblr media
I keep trying to paint with gouache, a request from a friend - Morrigan. I personally prefer her design from DA:O, but was asked to paint an Inquisition version.
Ref
Material - Gouache. Trying designer set of Schmincke this time. Really pleasant to work with, but weird choice of colours. Though I wouldn't have been able to do it without magenta in this case.

Hey hey hey! I love your colours and your illustration work is AWESOME. Can I ask, what materials do you like for your traditional work, especially coloured pencil, gouache and watercolour? Can’t wait to check out the shop!
Thank you!!! 😁💗
Colour pencils: Holbein + Prismacolour
Gouache: Schmincke Horadam Gouache (primary colours) + Holbein
Feel free to ask anything else 😊🌱

Sat down for some painting again a few days ago and gave the Nevskaya Palitra gouache paints a proper go.
Sure, they're no match for my Schmincke, M.Graham and Daniel Smitch gouaches, but they are super solid paints! Definitely going to get some good use out of them in my sketchbooks.

hi!! what watercolors do you use? your paintings are always so vibrant and have such a mystical vibe to them and I’m curious lol
super sorry if you’ve already answered this, tumblrs search function fights me whenever I try using it 😭
Hi! No worries I haven't and I'd love to talk about watercolor :) I use several, in transparent > opaque order:
Schmincke > Holbein cake colors > Nicker poster colors
Tumblr media
(family pic)
Some notes:
Schmincke: Expensive but really good, vibrant, if on a budget maybe you can get a couple blocks of colors you really like. If you're committed to watercolor I definitely recommend getting a palette. I made my own custom set. Loooove the blues.
Holbein: this is a Japanese brand, so it was actually easier to get in China than the US, I got on Ali Express. It's slightly more opaque but not exactly gouache. It looks like the really cheap kind of cake watercolor palette but a lot more vibrant. It sets on paper with a kinda of sandy texture and I really love it. It's also a bit more dense than traditional transparent watercolor, so you can also layer with it easily.
I think the 24 color set is a lot more worth it than the 12 color set. Problem is I don't think they sell blocks individually, or at least hard to find.
These recent ones I posted are the combination of these two paints above.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nicker: Again Japanese brand. I heard this is what Ghibli studio use? But it's affordable. I could get individual jars (jars are much better value than the tubes) in China, but in the US I've only found sets on Amazon so far.
It's smooth, and still remains a good saturation when diluted compared to other gouache/poster colors I've used. I don't use this alone as much now, but this is something solely done with Nicker I made a couple years ago 👇 as you can see it has good coverage. So when I did this I didn't layer up I just painted inch by inch.
Tumblr media
But I have to say, how a watercolor painting turns out is really up to the paper! In my opinion paper is even more important than the paint, it influences vibrancy and textures more than you would think. So I always encourage my friends to get good paper rather than expensive paint. I use Arches hot press for formal works most often, but for a cheaper option I also love Fabriano (the two lil ones above are on their postcard papers, really good enough). Both are great for layering up.
And last, you can Photoshop them :D
These stuff sure cost a lot in total, but it took me a long time to figure out and collect all these, they don't really run out that fast if you don't do very large paintings. You can definitely try it out bit by bit, and enjoy the excitement of using a new paint on the way!

Old lines, colours from last month. A small set of Ghibli-inspired cards. ^_^ I wanted to keep the background simple and test the black Ecoline watercolour ink I had lying around. It is not as dark or matte as I would like, but it beats hatching the entire background. :’) Schmincke watercolours, Ecoline watercolour ink, gouache, acrylics, pigment liners, 265 gsm Hahnemühle Bamboo.

Gouache and a Wedding
I hope everyone has that one friend with the superpower of seeing details that ordinary humans cannot. Maybe more than one. Or may it’s you yourself, lucky. I am fortunate enough to have this friend, and I even try to remember how fortunate I am when I’ve chosen things that fall below the standard and I get “the look.” In hindsight, it’s never undeserved, but without my friend’s superior eye for detail I would never have seen where I went barreling along mindlessly in the completely wrong direction, and she knows it, too.
In 2017 when my friend was planning her spectacular wedding and asked if I could do calligraphy for her, two things crossed my mind: absolutely this sounds like fun, and sheer terror, and not in that order. Fortunately, she was waist-deep in the eternal well of Instagram weddings and had done most of the research already. (As I wrote this she reminded me of how this skill has continued to serve us now with houses, babies, and gardens.) One of the things in her findings was gouache, which we couldn’t pronounce, but the super talented calligraphers on Instagram chose over and over for its stunning, matte depth and luscious opacity.
With this in mind and being mostly familiar with traditional broad nib styles, I set out to learn pointed pen calligraphy, quickly realized I had all the wrong tools, and then set out again a bit better prepared. One of the first new tools I determined I would need was an oblique nib holder. Things got easier once I had a pen that could achieve the correct angles. To help me on my way with the Copperplate style she loved, I studied Dr. Joseph M. Vitolo’s fabulous resources on this script available at Zanerian.
Tumblr media
After a few months of practice with the new script, I finally had the courage to start learning with the gouache. Based on the wonderful gouache intros by The Postman’s Knock and Patricia Lovett, I went with Schmincke Calligraphy Gouache in the rich Jet Black that my friend wanted from Paper & Ink Arts. It was fairly easy to get the “heavy cream” consistency by adding a little bit of water at a time. The gouache had smooth, creamy flow vs. the looser flow of my go-to Higgins Eternal Black. It tended to cling to the nib rather than pooling, and on the paper had a velvety presence. There’s another post dedicated to my obsession with this on The Calligraphy Supply blog.
For her envelopes (inner and outer), my friend chose an off-white. The black gouache created a crisp, elegant look.
Tumblr media
The tablescape she created was that effortlessly elegant place where everything simply comes together. She chose placecards in Shimmer Gold from Paper Source. Against a long white table, lush greenery studded with ivory roses, tapering white candles, white plates with golden rims, and classic flatware, the placecards caught the warmth of the afternoon sun. The deeply matte black writing the perfect anchor on the gold. Again the detail of the calligraphy created a special space where each guest was invited to the table.
Tumblr media
Even now the Schmincke’s Calligraphy Gouache on the envelopes and cards has remained as beautiful and as deeply opaque as it was that day. Looking at the suite brings me right back to that table, and maybe also to the moment when I was told I would speak for my friend after the eloquent British gent, and without a microphone.
Including hand drawn calligraphy for her wedding suite wasn’t the most expedient, or easiest choice. However, by not overlooking this detail, she infused the ambiance of timeless elegance into every moment in the day. She told her guests how vitally important they were in her life without saying a word. Though she did tell me they looked good.

"Servus aus München" Endlich habe ich es geschafft, die letzten Details zum letzten Stop der #zusammenzuhause Weltreise hinzuzufügen. Es war eine wunderbare Reise mit @missniceday und @fraeuleinteffi. So schöne Ergebnisse sind überall entstanden und ich habe bei den Recherchen zu den Motive auch neues gelernt. Es war eine Herausforderung alle Orte in dem Miniformat zu vereinen, aber ich bin richtig zufrieden mit dem Ergebnis. Showed my MiL around Atlanta. Saw these really cool art plates that interested my artist fancy and shared an Atlanta inspired peach tart.
Also a couple art supplies I ordered on sale, came in the mail. I am actually waiting still for jacksons to restock some of their watercolors hopefully here in a few days. These 2 watercolors werent originally on my to-buy list but again..they were on sale..
So these schmincke macaroons. I was a little worried because I just ordered a schmincke pastel set (the icey) set but these have different numberings on the colors and they're called different names. So I assume they'll blend in nicely and not be the exact same shade lmao.
The giant white pan is a blockX giant watercolor pain in titanium white. I saw these before christmas on stlouisartsupply and laughed at their ridiculous size. But I do go through a lot of white..which is quite forbidden in the watercolor community. The only thing is I had hoped it'd come in some sort of box but no..its just an open porcelain dish. I'm not sure how I'll store it once opened. Im hoping maybe I can find a breathmint tin and maybe it can sit in there? idk..
but I havent opened either of these sets yet.

Whumptober 2021 - Day 30
digging your grave
major character death / left for dead / ghosts
Now that's the question, is Danny dead? Or half dead? Is that even possible?
