02/03/2024-Testwood Lakes
Pictures taken here today in this set are of; eyecatching Cormorants, a prepossessing female Marsh Harrier which I got an extraordinary view of flying over and putting up the waterfowl a special moment with a bird I love, magical scarlet elf cup mushrooms which I enjoyed seeing, beautiful views on a great time here, one of three Roe Deers I got excellent views of, mercury, Lapwing a key bird seen and heard with their pleasant "pee-wit" calls today and some smashing jelly ear or wood ear fungi it was sensational to see loads of on a tree near the scarlet elf cups I enjoyed seeing them my first ever. Other highlights here today were Shoveler, Gadwall, Greylag Goose, Oystercatcher, Great Crested Grebes, two Mute Swans fighting with another nearby which I could hear from the hide from the other side of the water the splashes and flaps strongly audible, amazing views of a wonderful Cetti's Warbler hearing their distinctive call well too, Ring-necked Parakeets, Stock Dove, male Bullfinch, Goldcrest, Blue Tit, Long-tailed Tit and gorgeous daffodils and primroses.

I am having the mental health wobbles so I painted a box I intend to use for tea
I started with the top and it shows but I don't mind! I was learning!
The front has a natterjack in the middle and to the left is a Scarlet Elf Cup mushroom and the Right is a Fly Agaric
Does it bug me a little that the natterjack is off centre? Yes. But I'm comforted by the fact it will annoy my husband more
The left side has a Shaggy Parasol and I think I was getting the hang of it now
The right side has three Common Inkcaps
I'm going to put a cross-stitch project in the top cause it's a picture frame but I have to finish it first
But now I gotta go wash the paint off of me

Pulled some new Norwegian vocabulary words from Glad i vårtegn? Vårsoppene er her -- as a forager myself I thought it would be interesting to read about foraging in another country! It turned out to have a lot of really technical language and species names, and not all of them are actually edible mushrooms (some are the opposite!), but it definitely still made for interesting reading.

Thanks for this!
1) Scarlet elf cup mushrooms - they're all the way along my cycle path into uni right now
2) Darning plain socks in super bright contrasting colours
3) The murder of crows that lives in the trees outside my window. They're So loud at about 10pm every night
4) My polycule (counting them as one thing)
5) Jiu Jitsu - I started training about 6 months ago and I don't really shut up about it (sorry to my partners who hear me talk about it constantly)

Scarlet Elf Cups (Sarcoscypha coccinea) and Ruby Elf Cups (Sarcoscypha austriaca) (indistinguishable without microscopy) are one of the few Spring mushrooms that are also edible. They have a mild taste (when overcooked, can become flavourless). They can be gently pan-fried in a little oil/ butter or used in a stew, and they make a nice addition to pasta and rice dishes, or fried eggs.
If you're out looking for them, Elf Cups enjoy wet, muddy places (often close to a stream), and they grow on fallen twigs, rotting wood, under dead leaves but can be easily spotted because of their bright red color.

I was in Cincinnati today hiking with a park director there. We are doing some work for the park department. The director spotted this mushroom in the weeds. It is called a Scarlet elf cup and is one of the few mushrooms that grow in the winter.

March end of month post 1 of 3: Ten of my favourite plant and fungi photos I took in March 2024
Not quite the end of the month yet I know but as my March end of month posts are coming in three parts and I put them together on Thursday I thought I'd post one each night today, tomorrow and Sunday; tomorrow night at a similar time the post on ten of my favourite landscape and sky photos I took this month shall post and on Sunday ten of my favourite wildlife photos I took this month.
The photos in this set are of; daffodils and hyacinth at Lakeside Country Park, scarlet elf cup and jelly ear at Testwood Lakes, yellow fieldcap at Portland Bill, snake's-head fritillaries at Lakeside Country Park a sensation of my month as it often is in March, daffodil in Romsey, periwinkle in Winchester, wood anemone at Lakeside and common whitlowgrass at Denny Wood in the New Forest.
What a joy it has been to watch many more colourful floral delights emerge in March, many of them early in the theme of the year. Red and white deadnettle, speedwell, seas of lesser celandine, green alkanet, snowflakes, opposite-leaved golden saxifrage, herb-Robert, gorse, bluebells, primroses, ivy-leaved toadflax, cowslips, violet, daisies and dandelions have been other highlights as spring firmly took its grip. It's interesting that this is my fourth spring of really being into flowers and looking to identify all I've seen etc and whilst I'm so much more used to the species now there's always something to learn and I've seen some new ones this month which stood out so it always feels good. Turkey tail was another mushroom I saw a bit of this month as it was pleasant to encounter a few about.

Tell me you’re not excited to see some saggy old balls on a Sunday. Pixie and I had a great walk in the woods this afternoon checking out the stump puffball mushrooms, scarlet elf cups and some strange yellow wavy fungi. . . . #fungisunday #sundayfungi #stumppuffball #mushroomhunter #scarletelfcup #whippetlove #adoptdontshop #dogfoster #almawoods #lincolnshire (at Harrowby, Lincolnshire) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqQkPK9owXu/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
