Happy International Women’s Day! One of those days next to for example Columbus Day that truly shouldn’t exist, but for different reasons. Unlike Columbus, women deserve to be celebrated — they just shouldn’t have to have a specific day for it, not a specific day to have their voices heard. What is your favourite flower? 🌺 . What are you grateful for today? . I am so grateful, not only for my fiancé @weregettingout who bought me an iPad which has been invaluable to my work, but also for my Norwegian heritage and its beautiful culture which inspires me even on a distance.
One of the first Procreate classes I found, happened to be by @leila_and_po, an American illustrator who’s teaching a class in Digital, Scandinavian Folk Art. This shook something loose in me, which I think was very important for my own creative journey.
My grandfather knew how to paint Rosemaling, this traditional Norwegian way to decorate your everyday objects at home — I remember him showing me the things he’d painted when I was a kid. Unfortunately he died before I could ask him to show me the technique itself. But this online class was another way for me to get in contact with my roots. I am so glad I found it, and I now have so much fun experimenting and making it mine. 🧡

As we have now entered December you’ll find that I am not a Christmas person. I instead choose to focus on celebrating other things throughout the year, such as MY favourite holiday Halloween for example — but I also take every opportunity I get to celebrate and honour my ancestors. . This piece is inspired by Rosemaling, a technique local to Norway which has been used to decorate everyday objects since the 1700s. My granddad knew this technique but I unfortunately never got the opportunity to learn it directly from him – so now I go via online @Skillshare classes in digital Rosemaling, to figuring out how to add my own style and finally (hopefully) how to paint on wood like it was done traditionally. . . This design will be available as free wallpapers in my Stories!
