time's prophecy to 13 is like whatever, i generally dont really think abt it bc when i do it just feels a little like a contrivance to cut thasmin short, or more specifically to give 13 a reason to formulate why thasmin is getting cut short ie it just feels to me mainly as an in-universe way to say "hey so like we've got 3 episodes left theres not much we can do here"
but the other day i Was thinking abt it, or like it crossed my mind, that scene, that warning, that does little except verbalise to 13, with her own mouth, You Have No More Time
and i was like, thats actually like exactly what trauma does right? like that phenomenon where you are just convinced for no real concrete reason that youre dying within the next 1-5 years? i think i read that thats a ptsd thing once but idk. but you know the feeling, like, where youre stuck in the past and the future refuses to unfold? like it's just stuck. time is not moving forward. like there's a wall right in front of you and youre just like, im gonna walk into the wall. and maybe you feel like the wall is 1 year away or 5 but regardless, that 1 or 5 year can pass but the wall doesnt move. you know what i mean? like youre convinced you wont see your 20th birthday but youre actually already 25. just doesnt sink in.
i think thats what time's warning to 13 is. just the articulation of her own belief that shes running out of time. or that it had already run out before she even started. she starts her relationship with her companions with the assumption that it's temporary, even after they board for real: "you wont come back the same"
and if you look at it that way i think it's easier to deal with the jump from 13 to 14 or 15. not for yaz, obviously, shes still gonna be super upset abt it. but if 13 really genuinely entirely can not imagine the future that 14 has, can not imagine a future at all, like, it makes sense.
maybe she felt like she was dying but instead of the sentiment 10 expressed "some new man goes sauntering away and i am dead" she just stopped after the first sentence like "everything i am dies." stop. theres no After. theres nothing to imagine. theres no keeping yaz with her, theres no going back for her either. theres no continuation. theres no next. everything i am dies. and the world stops.
nightvale voice: death is only the end if you assume the story is about you.
but it's doctor who. she is the universe. what happens after the heat death of the universe? are you imagining settling down with a family who loves you? are you imagining heaven? after the heat death of the universe? the doctor doesnt believe in god.

Hey Tolkien people and history buffs of Tumblr, I'm in need of your assistance. Does anybody know if there was an actual historical inspiration (or many) to the narrow, no rails, stone bridge of Khazad-dûm?
For context, I'm trying to use it as an example in my theoretical physics dissertation on the dynamics of pedestrians moving in a single line, but I've already met with some resistance from advisors with No Taste. All my google searches have conducted to analyses of the effectiveness of the Khazad-dûm scene in the book & movie, instead of an analysis of the actual "physical" bridge.
I know I could use other modern examples from construction scaffolds or bus and plane boarding/exiting schemes for single-line movement, but that's boring. Uninspired. Everyone does it. What I want is a badass illustration from The Lord of the Rings, and a JRR Tolkien quote on my very theoretical, so abstract that is basically useless, physics dissertation.
A physicist calls for aid.

I want to ask how you're able to juggle so many characters and their interactions with Cricket and everyone? Every relationship feels so realistic and natural. I wonder if you have a hard time forgetting moments or conversations between characters.
Ahh thankyou so much! The truth is I do forget stuff sometimes, and I'm sure I will forget more stuff as the story goes on and more characters are introduced. I have a very large miro board that I store my notes on for important stuff to remember. In regards to keeping it feeling natural? I try not to over-plan my chapters, I have a scaffolding for it but if characters decide to say/do something different then I very rarely course correct. I find that characters tend to gravitate towards dialogue/decisions/relationships that are right for them, so I try to give them as much narrative space as possible to do that! The other thing that keeps it feeling natural is rooting as much as poss in real life experiences- people I have met, stuff I have seen etc, little details from real life resonate a lot and really help to bring characters/scenes to life.

Why Crowley Rescues Aziraphale
Okay, yes: it's flirtatious, it's cute, it's Anthony J. "Acts of Service" Crowley showing love in the only way he knows how because God forbid he use his words.
But what if there's more to it than that? What if there is a much darker explanation that portends major events in S3?
Allow me to convince you below the cut:
Evidence of Repetition Compulsion
But before we talk about the rescue motif, let's examine a more transparent aspect of Crowley's behavior that will provide a scaffold for the discussion of his Princess Peach obsession.
The Plants
Sure, Crowley is a hobby horticulturalist, but he doesn't do it because he loves plants. He does it because the plants are a representation of himself, and how he treats the plants tells us how he feels about himself. Importantly, how he treats the plants changes over time.
Season 1
He puts the fear of Crowley into them, destroying any specimen with a blemish and making an example out of it to threaten those that remain.
You know, just like God did to him.
Tumblr media
This scene is jam-packed with symbolism, and we can simmer on whether his punishment of the plants is simply externalized self-flagellation, or reflects internalized standards of perfectionism, or if he feels so powerless that he creates a new relationship in which he is the one that has the power... We could simmer, but that's not the point of this meta, so let's keep going.
Season 2
In 2023, Crowley is no longer a domineering monarch, ruling over his houseplants with an iron fist; of all the memorabilia he has in his flat (the statue from the church, the original Mona Lisa), the only things he brings with him are his plants.
And for someone living in his car, he's taking pretty good care of them:
Tumblr media
Someone else even noted that one of the plants appears to have spots, and clearly he hasn't thrown it in the garbage disposal for its transgressions. I wasn't able to see it myself, but I headcanon it because it fits with the observation that:
Crowley's attitude towards himself is changing.
He is evolving from internalized guilt and sense of inferiority to believing that he deserves care, even if he is a little blemished. It is this shift that brings it within the realm of possibility that he can admit his feelings to Aziraphale.
In both seasons, the unifying theme is that Crowley is reliving his trauma over and over, and then reliving his healing over and over. This cyclical behavior is, to my knowledge, incredibly characteristic of PTSD and CPTSD. In a phenomenon clinically referred to as Repetition Compulsion, the subject recreates and relives events of a traumatic past over and over in their present life, seeking resolution for something that has already happened, where the opportunity for true, satisfying closure is forever lost to the past. A huge part of therapeutic treatment is breaking these maladaptive cycles [citations]. But to our knowledge, Crowley doesn't have a therapist.
If this is how Crowley's CPTSD manifests in his relationship with inanimate objects semi-sentient dependents, how might it manifest in his relationship with his angel?
The Rescue Motif
The cycle of Aziraphale's self-endangerment and Crowley's nick-of-time rescues might look like just a cute part of their flirtationship, a necessary cover for their continued association, but I argue that it something much darker.
Crowley rescues Aziraphale over and over throughout history to try to absolve himself for the one time he couldn't.
But clearly, Aziraphale doesn't know that.
It only took one rescue for Aziraphale to realize that this kind of behavior brings them closer together - and he desperately wants to get close to Crowley. Please forgive the crudeness of the metaphor, but: when you need to drive a screw into a board and all you have is a hammer, you're gonna smack that thing on the head over and over with the only tool you've got. The problem is, this is really bad for the screw.
Tumblr media
Aziraphale, by leveraging the damsel-in-distress motif, over and over again, is inadvertently triggering a trauma response from Crowley because he likes what he gets out of it, which is spending time with the demon he loves and growing intimacy. If he knew that this is what he was doing, it would be sick and twisted and go against everything he believes about himself as an angel, let alone being mortified that he was hurting Crowley.
So the only possible conclusion (given we take the above conjectures as fact (see @queerfables, I listen to you <3)) is that:
Aziraphale Doesn't Know About His Own Jimmification
What is it that Crowley could have failed to rescue Aziraphale from that Aziraphale himself is unaware of? Well, at the least, it would have to involve a mind-wipe.
We know, canonically, that the Metatron can and will mind-wipe angels without actually casting them out of Heaven. Just because Aziraphale is an angel does not mean we can assume that this ability was never leveraged against him.
If Crowley knew that they were going to do this to his friend, he would have tried to stop it. The repeating damsel-rescue motif (in context of the existing, plant-based evidence of Repetition Compulsion) is a strong indicator that his mission to protect Aziraphale from the memory-wipe failed, and he is living in an endless loop of rescue behavior to try to resolve his guilt about that.
So why wouldn't Crowley tell Aziraphale that his mind was erased?
To properly address that I will need time to write a part 2. But others are welcome to use this as a jumping-off point, please just cite the inspo; it's a little thing that brings me joy ^_^

Love this man! Just a little meet cute between Loki and you, the only hitch, you're about to be hanged for being a 'witch'...
Salem, Massachusetts, July 19th, 1692
“Why are we here, brother?” Loki whispered to Thor, lowering his hat to hide his eyes as they stood among the townspeople. Thor looked from the scaffold to his brother and lowered his head to respond.
“Have you never longed for adventure, Loki?” He punched his brother’s shoulder. Loki merely scowled at him and mumbled something about how he’d wished he’d have stayed on Asgard.
“Have none of our other adventures,” he spat the last word, “Not been enough to satiate this taste of yours for danger? Why must we continue this charade.” Thor looked at his brother nervously before eyeing the scaffold again.
“Why, Loki. Whatever do you mean?” Loki smirked at his brother and crossed his arms.
“Obviously this is about the row you had with father.” Tugging again on his hat brim he focused his attention on the men and women being marched onto the wooden planks of the high gallows. He observed six in total. Four women and two men. Sensing that Thor had finally come up with a retort, he held up a finger and shook his head. “Not now.” He whispered.
A dower looking man in a black hat like his own took a moment to clear his throat before looking down at a piece of paper. Loki’s eyes cast over the men and women. Most just looked like average Midgardians, save for the sniffling and puffy eyes they sported. Then his eyes passed over a younger looking woman. She was standing on the end. He wasn’t sure exactly what about her had caught his attention. No, that was a lie. It was the defiant way she held herself. The almost regal posture, the stubborn set of her chin, and not a sniffle or puffy eye to be seen.
Only eyes that regarded the crowd blandly. His interest was piqued. With a mischievous grin at his brother, he discretely waved his fingers and disappeared from Thor’s side, only to reappear closer to the scaffold. The dreary man squinted at the paper, then looked over the men and women, before training his eyes on the young stoic woman.
“Y/N Men Repent L/N,” he cleared his throat, “Do you confess to the charge of being a witch and consorting with agents of darkness?” The woman, Y/N, regarded him with shuttered eyes before staring straight ahead.
“I have nothing to say.” She sighed and firmed her jaw. Loki grinned. He liked this woman. The man regarded her for another moment before turning to another man, who nodded and moved to stand behind her.
“Since you choose not to confess or repent of your wicked deeds, I leave you to your fate.” With a final nod towards the man standing behind her, he returned his attention to squinting at the paper.
“Ann Smith,” He looked up at the next woman in line. A pale mousy thing, all sniffles and red eyes. Loki’s turned his full attention to Y/N; around whose neck the large man had just placed a rope. He narrowed his eyes at the hiss sound she made when the man roughly yanked her hair free of the rope before tightening it.
Who was this man, who were these people to be putting ropes around anyone’s necks, let alone this fascinating creature. Y/N took a deep breath and closed her eyes, waiting for the short drop. She felt the air rushing from where the board fell from under her feet. She felt her body begin to drop, and then, nothing. No choking, no gasping.
Opening one eye, she looked down, and instead of seeing her bottom half hanging limp, she instead saw two black boots. Shooting open both eyes, she looked up and instead of open sky, she saw blue eyes looking at her humorously. Coming to herself, she realized she was being cradled by a tall man with wavy black hair. Blinking, she looked around, only to find she was not in Salem anymore.
“Put me down!” With a huff she began kicking her legs. The man merely shifted her weight with a chuckle. Looking up, she regarded him with narrowed eyes.
“I must say, you have an interesting way of showing your gratitude.” He smiled to himself. Crossing her arms, she straightened and looked forward.
“Thank you.”
“There. See how easy that was.” He hummed approvingly.
“Now can you put me down?”
“I seem to recall there is a word you Midgardians use, when you’d like someone to do something for you.” (Loki would recall in years to come that Y/N had not flinched or even questioned when he’d referred to humanity as Midgardian.)
“Please put me down.” With that, she felt her feet touch earth again. Bending to straighten her dress, she froze when she realized the man was still behind her. He stood with his arms crossed and head cocked to the side studying her. Quirking a brow, she placed her hands on her hips and studied him in return.
“Tell me, Y/N, is it?” He traced a finger over his jaw thoughtfully, “Do you make a regular habit of being accused of heresy and witchery?” He grinned openly at her. Y/N narrowed her eyes. He was making sport of her!
“As a matter of fact,” She paused indicating that he should share his name. He apparently did not feel the need for that. “It’s happened once or twice.” She muttered. The amusement that shone from his eyes grated her.
“Now I know where I’ve seen you before!” He narrowed his eyes and chuckled darkly. Her eyebrows reached towards her hairline as recollection flooded her mind. This wasn’t the first time this man had rescued her.
“And tell me, Mister whatever your name is,” She waved her hand in the air, “Do you make a regular habit of saving women accused of heresy and witchery?”
“Loki!” A large blond man boomed, quickly making his way towards them. Loki flinched and rolled his eyes.
“Loki.” She narrowed her eyes at him and grinned.
