When I first really followed Doki Doki Literature Club, Yuri was my fave cause I liked her hair and overall personality, and while I still do like her...I think I'm kinda more for Monika in terms of self shipping. Like, she just feels that niche I like of wanting to make characters I like happy, and yeh she was def flawed in doin what she did to get to the player, but what would you expect? You suddenly get god-like powers and realize your friends are just scripted encounters? It'd be tough!

I just think Monika deserves one player to be happy with. Ya know, to date, spend time with, marry...settle down...have some kids...grow old together...ya know, couple stuff, ehehe...

Ranking DDLC ships day 1 Sayori ships (contains DDLC spoilers)

(These are all my opinions, if you disagree don't be mean about it, anyways, feel free to post your Sayori ship rankings!)

act 1: 1. Sayosuki: It's rather cute!

2. Sayuri: Deredere x Dandere? How cute!

3. SayoMC: Cut, kinda neutral on MC as a character though. Even then, this one is my #1 BROTP.

4. Sayonika: I prefer wholesome ships over toxic ships, and not much potential since Monika likes the player not Sayori (in a romantic context, Monika does like all the dokis as friends even when she is self-aware :D.)

5. Sayori x Player (can't find a ship name for this one): She doesn't even know who the player is in act 1, LMAO.

act 2:

Sayori x player: By this point she only likes the player ._.

ddlc au where everything is the same but gravity pulls monika parallel to the ground instead of straight down

on the first day when sayori first brings mc to the club, the moment she opens the door monika plunges straight to the front of the class, landing on the chalkboard on the wall

as everyone else looks in disbelief, monika just looks straight at the fourth wall and says outright, "this world is a joke of a video game and it's personally fucking with me; please please help."

the epiphany explanation is that she was actively trying to copy sayori to try and get on mc’s good side so he’d be more likely to have the option to spend time with her, for the player to pick.

the sweet explanation is that she saw sayori as a beacon of all things nice and approachable, and did it herself to try and be the same way.

i think it's pretty easy to take a surface-level look at DDLC that it's "the game is expecting you to be grossed out by all these girls with mental illness" when i think the more fair analysis is that Monika expects you to be grossed out by that.

burdened with the "hellish epiphany" that her and her world literally only exists to serve a player character who can only see them as abstract tropes to fuck, of course she thinks making them seem more "real" will take away from their attraction, so of course intentionally worsening their mental health will take the player's eye off them, right? amplify the Real People behind the tropes assuming the player doesn't want to fuck, say, a girl with an abusive parent that malnourishes her, they want to fuck a little tsundere trope. the game and its characters within expect the player to find that gross because the game and its characters don't think highly of the player.

i think it's also pretty clear from the text that the characters would already not be perfectly mentally healthy even in a world without the player character there forcing it all to be centered on them. after all, it's pretty clear that it's a theme that the dating sim tropes obscure that there's necessarily Real People under them with Real Reasons to act like that. (i think the side stories in ddlc+ explore this theme deeper, but i've not played ddlc+ so) just cause there's an outside force intentionally trying to make all the other characters the worst version of themselves to make herself more appealing doesn't trivialize the point that they aren't Perfect Trope Icons in the first place

and even in monika's case, the nature of the world and the hellish epiphany it inflicts on its participants forces them into crab bucketing once they realize. monika isn't uniquely evil, act 4 shows that sayori immediately falls into the exact same pattern as soon as she becomes self-aware instead

existing in that kind of context breaks your mind, because of course it does! there's an obvious Main Character, it's not you, and you literally only exist to fuck him! that's your entire universe, of course you get driven to madness by it!

the player is the villain of DDLC, specifically the eye of a narrative that exists to serve them, and i think when that's missed it leads to bad analysis that frames the game in a bit of a worse light than it deserves.
