I think the reason I'm now obsessed with Regret is that she spends the entire game as the object of other people's projections. This is most apparent, and most literal, with the residents of Redo, whose projections onto her as the one to absolve them of their regrets, as a savior/healer figure, literally force her into a fight she doesn't want to participate in. And in Bluffman's elevation of her as a Goddess, surrounding her with weapons that attack without her volition to any perceived threat to that Godhood.
But she gets this from the other Musicians, who view her as a God, an idol, a means to realize their ambitions, as invincible and untouchable. She gets this from χ, who is obsessed with besting her and using her as a means to prove her own worth and superiority. She gets this from the Go-Home Club, Kobato most notably, using her rather explicitly as an outlet for his resentment towards μ and Mobius.
Yet in the end, when she finally gets to speak as herself, she ardently refutes all of them.
When she hears about Bluffman's death, she celebrates. When the Go-Home Club comes to her, ready for their final confrontation, she neither plays the part of the villain that they want, nor does she beg them for forgiveness. She tells them exactly who she is, why she did what she did, and what she wants.
"I got carried away, I got pressured into this, I'm sick and tired of being a Goddess, I want to go home."
She's tactless and blunt and rambling and anxious and impatient. And when they try and build her up, when they try and accuse her, she shoots them down. She gets defensive, annoyed, upset. When they gear up to kill her, she welcomes it. Wants it. She knows that with her death, she gets out, and she's absolutely thrilled by the prospect.
The Go-Home Club walks into the room looking for a villain, and instead they find a messy, autistic trauma survivor who steadfastly refuses to play along with being anything other than a human being.
And that, more than anything, is what deflates the Go-Home Club. I've seen a couple of people say that this game's ending is unsatisfying, a take which I disagree with, but I think this is why. Because her very presence as a person who is both unrepentant and pathetic, who neither begs for forgiveness or revels in her actions, undermines the heroic fantasy that she's been forced into.
It's why she freaks out when Bluffman's security system deploys itself. When she is forced into fighting. Because, after finally making a choice for herself after months and months of being trapped being everything for everyone else, she has that choice taken away from her by the same people who put her in this situation.
But still, she loses. And in losing, she wins.
Because after being built up for the whole game as a Goddess, after being placed up on a pedestal by everyone around her, it is Sayoko Hitomi, in the end, who gets to have the last word on herself.

Today's the birthday of Regret from The Caligula Effect 2. I'd say wish her a happy one, but with her in charge, we may no longer have a choice.

as someone who is friends with a person who is really obsessed with the Caligula Effect i'll try to give a rundown on Regret. On the off chance they read this I hope I got it all right those loving rants liveplay they did on Discord so that makes it a year ago or so
The two Caligula Effect games are about people getting trapped in the artificial paradises by virtuadolls (basically, vocaloids) after listening to their songs with the protagonist and their like minded companions wanting out after breaking the illusion created by them. The first centers around μ who created the space called Mobius where whatever someone wished for came true and they constantly relive the three years in high school with her ex-partner and fellow virtuadoll Aria wanting to put a stop to her and backing the party for that reason. The second game takes place years after the first with a new virtuadoll, Regret, skyrocketing into fame following μ and Aria’s plummeting popularity after the first game’s ending. And with this fame came the creation of Redo, a virtual space in which people can escape their woes and regrets they have in life.
More under the cut.
A recurring element in the two games is the idea of idolizing someone with the major figures both ally and enemy being musical idols themselves. In 2, it’s laid pretty heavy with the views people have of Regret. Many people in Redo, including the Obbligato Musicians who compose songs for her, have placed her on some sort of mystical pedestal. A healer, a savior, and even an outright goddess with some doing what they can to elevate her into that role no matter the cost.
The protagonist and their friends are no different. Everyone sees her as their biggest obstacle in getting out of Redo, this tormenting force keeping them in their cages. χ, another virtualdoll, has made it her mission to surpass Regret given that she’s the “daughter” of μ and is angry at Regret dragging her mom’s name in the mud even further.
By the finale, all this build-up is thrown out the window with the revelations that she’s *not* a virtuadoll to begin with, but a human named Sayoko Hitomi who became a shut-in sometime during her formative years. Her mother left having grown fed up having to deal with her while her dad remained distant.
At some point she decided to pose as a virtuadoll and do covers of μ's songs which led to her gaining a following. Her dad caught on to this and pose as a fan and secretly support her, going by the alias Bluffman, to help her popularity grow and at some point this escalated to turning his daughter into a proper goddess to make her happy rather than, y'know, talking to her face to face and making up.
Sayoko eventually stopped being on board with the whole “goddess of paradise” thing when the implications of that reared their ugly heads what with shouldering the regrets and wishes of so many people but was too afraid to actually put her foot down and back out when she had the chance. She ended up discreetly supporting the protagonist and χ in defeating her for this very reason, even sabotaging her allies with no one the wiser.
Upon being told by the party that Bluffman died prior to confronting her by one of his allies who is irl employee (will not elaborate that's a whole other can of worms) she is positively ecstatic (still oblivious to the fact that he's her dad)
She also gains like a dozen more expressions after this critical information is revealed to her.
Tumblr media
This is the point where she tells her side of the story and where some of the info above is brought up and while most of the cast isn't fond of the fact that they got caught up in Extremely Poor Communication but by this point she's not out to antagonize them or anything she's just concerned with getting out, even if it means her death and asks them to do what they have to do
And even when the protagonist obliges her request, the weapons installed by Bluffman activate and begin defending her despite what she wants and she begins going mad from the wishes of Redo's people calling out to her not unlike μ in the previous game which forces a confrontation anyway. Only when χ decides to shoulder *her* and everyone else's regrets does she put an end to this and gains the power to send the cast and everyone within Redo home
So, yeah, I'd say Buried is a good fit.
Edit: Although, I see valid cases for the Lonely too
Regret from The Caligula Effect 2 for the Buried?

Tagged by @radroller and it took me.... far longer than I’d like to admit to find good ones for some of these. (Do you know how few songs start with the letter U? And I have to fill that twice!)
Kimi Omoi Birthday - Yuri Komagata (Portraying Sayoko Takayama)
Under The Weight - Masayoshi Soken
I Love Love You - Guitar Vader (Hideki Naganuma Remix)
Pollyanna - Catherine Warwick
Escape From The City - Crush 40

Love Me Dead - Ludo
A Corner of Memories - Shoji Meguro, Atsushi Kitajoh, Ryuta Kozuka
Anyway I don’t really feel like tagging anyone. Also I was originally only going to fill up Kuiper but then I realized I didn’t have a good song from Perfume and I couldn’t get Love Me Dead in there, so...

Something about the way in which in the first game, Thorn figuratively resurrects Ichika through the adoption of her likeness within Mobius. Yet in the second game, it is Thorn whom is resurrected by Bluffman, and the medium through which this is done is Thorn's music. The resurrector becoming the resurrected, the appropriated image, the icon.
How Bluffman elevates Regret as a Goddess. Through the creation of the Redo, how the Tower of Epimetheus is a tower that enshrines a God, how his ultimate goal is to destroy Redo in order to achieve true apotheosis. How Apotheosis, in and of itself, can be conceptualized as a form of death and resurrection.
Ichika Saotome is dead, so she cannot speak. We hear of her only through the stories of the men who she left in her wake, and yet her ghost permeates all of the first game's story.
Thorn, too, haunts the second game. Through the Musicians reverence of her, she too is elevated from the realm of the human to the realm of the aspirational. He is not Thorn-aka-Asuka, she is Thorn, the Legendary Composer, the one whom the presumed worth of the Obbligato Musicians is measured against.
(When MU-kun excoriates Bluffman, tells him that he is not Thorn, he calls him Natsume Asuka. It is the one time Thorn's name is used.)
Sayoko Hitomi is not dead, despite the many attempts to kill her. She is spoken of as a Goddess, as a virtuadoll greater μ, as invincible, as impossible to defeat. Much of this is by Bluffman. Much of this is by all of the other Musicians.
In the end, she speaks. And in the end, she says, I am a human being.
She is taken down while screaming and sobbing. Her last moments are spent crying and breaking down. She dies in Redo. She comes back in the real world. And this isn't like the other deaths.
This is death of a Goddess, and the resurrection of a human.
