fill me up with red wine & i'm yours
series: yugioh 5ds ship: divine/carly nagisa characters: divine, carly nagisa notes: @ygoadvent day 7 - mulled wine. for divcarly nation (population: me and my fiancee)
read on ao3 | tip me on kofi | commissions are open
Somehow, she had a feeling Divine was on about more than just the wine – something that looked like it shouldn’t be sweet but is.
This really was against all better judgment. The last time Carly had been alone with the man… Well, she wasn’t sure what had happened, but she could guess it was something absolutely awful. And yet, when she saw him stood by the sink, staring absently out the window, she found herself entranced, stepping closer and closing the door behind her.
Divine glanced back at her, freezing with a conflicted look in his eye. He didn’t speak, instead sipping at his drink, as though to gain some liquid confidence. It was only when he returned to staring out the frosted glass that he was able to say anything at all. “I’m sorry.”
She quietly poured herself a glass, her eyes lingering on him. He sounded genuine, even if she couldn’t confirm it. Part of her wondered if she was simply too trusting. Her voice sounded weak when she finally replied, “I forgive you.” Did she know what she was forgiving?
He just sighed, and she hovered near him, taking a swig of her own drink. It wasn’t what she had been expecting, and she almost spat it out in surprise. It wasn’t bad by any means – it was sweet, and she loved sweet – but she realised it was silly to take it without even asking what it was.
“Don’t like it?” He had turned away from the window now, watching her with the slightest hint of amusement on his face, “It’s mulled wine.”
Carly supposed it made sense that he knew what it was; he certainly looked like he did. She lifted her glass to smell it, as though suspicious, before trying it again. Now that she expected it, it wasn’t so bad. “Hm. It’s kinda nice, I guess. Just a lot sweeter than I thought!”
When she made eye contact with him, she found herself thankful for the slight barrier of her glasses. It helped with the way her eyes widened, nor with the butterflies that she couldn’t explain. Maybe she was tipsy – though she had only had a tiny bit. No, that didn’t make any sense.
“Yeah, it does that.” He finished his drink, and she became very aware of how small the kitchen was. “Deceptively sweet.”
Somehow, she had a feeling Divine was on about more than just the wine – something that looked like it shouldn’t be sweet but is. Was he… flirting?
She took another sip, and it seemed to steady the nerves bundling together in her core. “Sounds like someone else I know.” She turned her head away, squeezing her eyes shut as she spoke. It sounded silly – it felt silly – but the look on his face when she finally turned back around was enough to make it worth it.
She had never seen a man so red in the face, blinking incredulously at her – it seemed he hadn’t been trying to flirt, and she had stepped over the threshold without thinking twice. But… Well, he was smiling, and he shook his head. “Don’t be silly, darling. Nothing sweet about me.”

Okay, one more post and then I swear I’ll stop procrastinating on my writing.
Back to Episode 42: It actually makes zero sense that Aki was on the Human Trafficking List o’ Doom??? She was Divine’s most powerful weapon and I don’t see him as wanting to share. And he had plans for her too! I guess it’s possible he could have been lying to her about the whole Operation Jeanne d’Arc, but if that was the case then why go to all the trouble with the Fortune Cup??
IDK, I actually think the dub did it better…blatant censorship aside.

Sonder Suppression
a/n: tumblr hates creative font choices. So i uploaded two sections as images for preservation sake. Hopefully they dont get ruined🥲
anyway thyme is forced to forget all ties to their prior life in this one:)
------------------------------
Arcadia's rooftop towered over most of New Domino City. The endless sky, the vast ocean horizon, mazes forming in alleyways too distant to pick apart the details... one could sit and daydream here for hours. Clouds speckled the sky, providing plenty of imagery for the artistic minds. Thyme found themself alone, steps sluggish against the concrete. Familiar clicks of metal as smoke began to pour from their fingers.
Insomnia continued to plague their mind. Sleep was clearly a luxury unattainable by their current predicaments. They leaned on the half wall, eyes scanning their surroundings. Comfort washed over them in a strange sense of deja vu as their gaze landed on Satellite's outline against the horizon.
How many of us are trapped there? Thyme let their mind begin to wander. Arcadia should send in a mission. Surely there's psychic duelists who lost the fate lottery. Think of how we could grow-
Ash burned their hand. Thyme shook it off, mind suddenly brought back to the present moment. They thought they'd been daydreaming for a few moments, yet their entire cigarette had burned down. Before they could pull the pack from their jacket, their phone began buzzing.
Thyme chuckled, ignoring further messages and finally retrieving their pack. Lingering scents of tobacco and vanilla drifted in the air. Sayer had been teaching the duo how to use their psychic abilities outside of duels.
The first lesson? Linking their minds to find each other in the event of separation.
It was ten minutes before Akiza finally opened the rooftop entrance, visibly out of breath. "Why are you always in the oddest places?" Huffs as she joined them by the wall. "Those stairs are a bitch."
"I just like it up here." Eyes drifted back to the ocean. "I think our powers are improving. I didn't get a headache this time."
She placed a hand by her ear, nails scratching the skin, "My ears were ringing."
"Skill issue, I guess." They offered the pack, "Wanna try?"
"You know my answer." Akiza followed Thyme's gaze, "... You're thinking about that island again."
"Do you ever wonder about Satellite?" Another cloud escaped Thyme's lips, "How many of us are trapped there, unable to realize their powers?" It's sad, Akiza.
Akiza crossed her arms. "Before we venture there, we have to set our roots here." They can be sad while we set up safety.
"Roots can spread anywhere." Like a meadow of lavender.
"Deep, secure roots, Thyme. We've barely touched ground in the City." We're barely one lavender bud right now.
They sighed, leaning onto their elbows over the concrete, "They're all worth it, to me."
She let the conversation go silent, mind racing with rebuttals. You get too lost in your own head. Satellite has nothing to offer Arcadia. They're worth nothing.
"Say it out loud, Rosebud." Thyme flicked their extinguished cigarette off the edge, "Don't be classist."
"Stop reading my thoughts then!!" She stomped her foot. "I'm not classist!"
They shrugged, "Blame Sayer. Or blame that you think too loud."
Bitch!
Likewise. A playful smirk tugged at their lips. "You're so easy to rile up, Rosebud." Thyme wrapped an arm around Akiza's shoulder, "We're a good team."
"Unfortunately." A pout spread over her face, "You can be a real piece of work."
"Valid. What did you need me for anyway?"
"Oh! Sayer needed to talk to you." Akiza grabbed Thyme's arm and began pulling them towards the door. "We got work to do!"
---
The Headmaster office felt too big for one person. Mahogany furniture and velvet curtains lined the walls. Carved busts of famous political figures adorned marble pillars illuminated by elaborate chandeliers.
Expensive taste. Thyme always felt out of place in this extravagant decor.
Sayer sat at his desk as the duo walked in. "Ah, there you two are. Thank you for coming."
"Of course, Sayer." Akiza nodded her head. "You had told me that Arcadia needed to-"
Hands slammed on his desk, immediately disrupting the conversation. Pens rattled and rolled away; papers disheveled from their particularly placed stacks. Sayer managed to keep a neutral face in the moment of interruption.
Thyme locked eyes with the man, hands splayed on the wood, "Arcadia needs to expand into Satellite."
Akiza's brow furrowed with disgust. Shut up! Now is not the moment!
Sayer kept his face neutral. "Whatever do you mean, Thyme?"
They stood and pointed out his window, "That island is without hope. How many of us are trapped there without any ability to realize their powers? Arcadia need to save them from their predicament. I want to lead a scouting there."
"Hm." He closed his eyes, "Akiza, would you step out? I'll reconnect with you later."
Akiza tensed, "But-"
"Now, please." A stern voice left no room for discussion.
She nodded, eyes hesitating on Thyme's equally stern face. The doors opened and shut with a heavy click of metal. Seconds ticked by from the towering grandfather clock. Nothing outside this impromptu staring contest mattered. A silent battle of will.... Sayer finally shook his head.
"Sayer, I think everyone deserves a chance." Thyme straightened their posture. "Look at me- I have a marker-"
"Permanently scrambled."
"Yeah, but it's still on my face." They pointed to the golden star etched into their cheek, "I'm still predetermined in society to be trash. I should've been sent to that hellscape. Instead, you gave me a chance. Arcadia gave me a home. Why can't we extend the same grace to more of Satellite?"
"Thyme-"
"I would be such a great lead, too! Even you yourself have commented how I'm able to rally people for a cause."
"Thyme-"
"Plus no one appreciates Satellite for what it does. Our whole city functions due to their efforts and I think even though it can be rough Arcadia can definitely-"
"THYME." Hands firmly gripped their shoulders.
Thyme had been so lost in making their point, they hadn’t realized Sayer move within reach. "...yes?"
"Leave Satellite where it belongs."
"But-"
"That's an order. We don't have any business going there." His grey-green eyes stared into their soul. What was he thinking? This could revolutionize the movement, even garner it new momentum beyond what they'd already witnessed. Something about this response just... didn't feel right.
"....No." Thyme shoved away his hands. Emerald eyes fueled by determination, "Just because you don't see the value doesn't mean I have to throw it away."
Too quick to react, Sayer slapped their cheek. Thyme stumbled from the surprise attack. Before they could recover, electricity jolted through their body. A taser struck their abdomen, where pain matched in unbearable intensity. Minutes passed before the shock finally ended. Thyme went unconscious- body fully limp and heavy against the hardwood floor.
"Unfortunately, you're too valuable an asset to simply terminate." Sayer picked up one of Thyme's legs, dragging them to a bookshelf. He pulled out a red booklet, prompting the entire unit to shift aside. A long hallway of steel greeted him.

I hate this man
But looks at Akiza
He was probably the first person to hug her in years
Akiza is a great example of the idea of someone being so alone that they fall for the very first person who shows them any sort of kindness even if that person is a walking red flag waving baby red flags

Fairy Tale Allusions in Yugioh 5Ds
So I was rewatching 5Ds and Akiza's duel against the knight dude got me thinking about the fairy tale allusions in her design and arc, and thinking about it more got me to realize that 5Ds actually has a lot of loose fairy tale allusions throughout it. So here are just a couple of the ones I noticed:
Akiza in general: Akiza's first duel of the series was already really heavy with the knight vs. witch symbolism. It also got me thinking about the "Princess, Witch, and Prince" theme from Revolutionary Girl Utena. A very basic rundown of what Utena says on it is that people will try to sort women into a box of good (Princess) or bad (Witch) based on how much they conform to the concept of what a girl should be like, a good Princess has to trade independence for protection from a Prince, any girl that doesn’t agree is a Witch. Problem is that no woman is ever just one of those things at a time, and Akiza definitely isn't. She is at first feared for her power, labelled the evil Black Rose Witch, and attempts to find comfort and safety in her "Prince" (Sayer). Only when she meets Yusei and the gang and finds acceptance from them and her parents do we see that she's actually a very kind girl. And even then, she doesn't go trading one Prince for another, she's never as reliant on Yusei as she was with Sayer and maintains her independence. Also just her deck in general carries the theme with fairy tale-like imagery (roses, knights, witches, fairies, and a dragon).
Akiza + Yusei: These two are basically Beauty and the Beast. I am a major faithshipping fan, but even if you take out the romantic aspects, it still fits. Yusei being Beauty and Akiza being the Beast for obvious reasons. The scene with Yusei waking Akiza in the hospital also gives major Sleeping Beauty vibes as well (this scene also owns my soul).
The rose imagery also still fits with both of them.
Yusei: He's Cinderella: he's a poor boy, goes to a ball that he wasn't supposed to go to (Neo Domino), has to leave at midnight (gets arrested), but leaves behind a "glass slipper" (the mark of the Crimson Dragon) that makes it so that the prince (Godwin) can track him down and give him another shot at freedom (not for altruistic purposes of course, but it still fits).
Jack and Carly: Scoopshipping are The Little Mermaid. The mermaid (Carly) falls in love with the prince (Jack), but for certain reasons, they cannot be together. Said mermaid makes a deal, by trading her soul, she gains legs (Dark Signer abilities + duel runner) which allows her a second chance to go after the prince. But the prince rejects her proposal (because she's undead and evil now), and the mermaid concedes. But being unable to hold up her end of the deal, she turns into sea foam and dies (turns into dust and dies).
Leo and Luna: Luna's deck already has a loose fairy forest type theme (and in the manga, has a Fairy Tale archetype). I want to say they're Hansel and Gretel. Has the same beats of two siblings getting lost in the woods (Luna with her spirit world adventure, Leo dueling Devack with "Closed Forest" up). But most of it comes from their duel with Devack, in which Hansel (Leo) stalls the witch (Devack) for as long as possible until Gretel (Luna) can kill the witch by pushing him into the oven (win the duel). You could also say that Luna's arc of freeing Ancient Fairy Dragon has elements of Rapunzel (saving the princess from the witch that locked her up).
Those are at least the ones I noticed. I doubt all of them were intentional but it's interesting when you make the connections. Let me know if there's any I missed because I'm not done with my rewatch yet and don't have anything for Crow. Feel like Team Satisfaction and Neo Domino City have Wizard of Oz parallels, but haven't got enough info to say how yet.

as humans we naturally want to envision characters with human or humanoid appearances but it feels wrong to me to depict the sayer ai characters as humanoid robots. bc the point is that all of them are playing 5d chess with each other but have to manipulate humans into taking action for them bc their ability to physically interact with the world is limited. if sayer had a robot body it would only be one episode long

Hey, been looking into your Yugioh! 5Ds aus since getting back into Yugioh (and finding myself drawing a Stardust Dragon Chick instead of working on Commissions, orz). Kind of been wondering, what are your thoughts on a 'Yusei being a Psychic Duelist' Au? I stumbled onto that as a fic, and I'm a bit intrigued by the idea of it myself. Just not sure how it'll work in the story in general as I haven't seen 5D's in a long while...
ASDFGHSDFGH (LOL)
Honestly, I'd love an AU with Yusei as psychic duelist. But that would imply a lot of changes in the main storyline:
Yusei would get extra reasons to be discriminated (not only bc he's from Satellite + prison, but also bc he's dangerous)
would his friends be supportive throughout their whole childhood time? they'd be a positive influence on him for sure, I like to imagine they helped him when he struggled to be accepted by other kids in the Satellite and to control his powers, but that's my 2 cents
I like to also imagine that he can control his powers during the time of the main storyline events, while Aki cannot. That would make him an even better "role model" for her, especially comparing him to Sayer/Divine! (Gosh, Divine would hate him sooo much more XD)
As you know, in prison, the guards tried to force his mark to manifest. He was also forced to duel. Would that have happened knowing fully well that he was a psychic duelist??? They had only two options, leave him alone or risk their lives, depending on the amount of pressure they would put on him. I really don't know what would have happened in that case.
Now, the Arcadia Movement would have found out about him for sure. Would he have been one of them??? I mean, why not? Maybe he could have met Aki THERE. But the story would have become very psychic duelist-centered. Still an excellent shift for me, I love psychic duelists way more than standard duelists. I'm sorry I don't make the rules here-
We would have still got an arc about the runaway from the evil movement and some boss battle against Divine. So yeah, I'm in for this
REAL STARDUST DRAGON??? HELLO???
