i have to watch this all again and process but i have one thing to say for now. thank you to the writers of season 2. there are so many flaws, so many things crammed into eight episodes when they would have needed 28, but they did one thing right that leigh could never do. they did alina justice. they left her powers to her, they let her rebuild ravka as she wished to, and they let her explore her dark side too. she used merzost, she brought mal back unlike in the books, and she tasted that power. she liked the power of that cut. she loves her power, her light, and leigh stripped her of that in the books. and why? to make her live a normal mortal life with mal. but they did this perfectly here, mal is his own person and he wants to find out who he is without his destiny to be alina’s amplifier, and alina wants to rebuild the country she fought so hard for, keep the friends and family she found along the way. this ending was perfect. i know we’ll see them again and they probably will end up together at some point, but this wasn’t it, this wasn’t the right time anyway. and i’m beyond happy they didn’t strip alina of her powers. she is a summoner, she loves being grisha, and i always hated how she was just taken away from all of that after tearing down the fold. it was as if she’s only been made for that purpose, to tear down the fold and then disappear again. now, she finally gets a chance to be her own person have a different purpose, rebuild a country, find her path, discover more about her power. she can choose where to go from here. i really couldn’t be happier about this ending
#i never talk about the shadow and bone trilogy#i’m always about the soc duology#because i never quite made peace with the sab ending#i hated the way they treated alina and i hated mal as a character. i felt like there was always something off about them. something missing#and here it is. their depth. their will to find their path after the fold is finally down#the chance to find a purpose beside the war#i mean no hate towards leigh or the books#six of crows is still one of my absolute favorite books of all time. but sab was always misaing something in my opinion#a dynamism to the characters and the story#and i finally saw it here#alina starkov#mal oretsev#shadow and bone#shadow and bone netflix#sab#sab netflix#sab spoilers#six of crows#soc#grishaverse

I really hope shadow and bone will actually address inej’s trauma, whether it’s in a six of crows spin off or a third season of the show. Inej Ghafa’s backstory deserves to be told and her trauma and ptsd from being kidnapped and trafficked as a child should not be erased or downplayed. They’ve already missed opportunities to at the very least give us snippets of her story and her struggles and I’m hoping they actually have got plans to show her backstory but are just waiting until they have the space to do so properly. Inej Ghafa is the heart of the crows and her story matters!
#i’m giving them the benefit of the doubt here and hoping they will tell her story properly if given the chance#inej ghafa#shadow and bone#kanej#six of crows#shadow and bone spoilers#also while they’re at it they can give us more of inej and ninas friendship#and i think they made a mistake by killing heleen but they can bring her back since we never saw a body even if they have to recast

Extremely self-indulgent. For the neurodivergent girlies. English isn't my first language, so my apologies for any mistake. I also have no idea how to write a Scottish accent 🧘🏻♀️ bear with me
You knocked on the dark hardwood door as you've had done plenty of times before.
It has been almost six months since you've signed that contract. That one, the one where you forfeited 4 years of your life in exchange for stable wages and proper housing.
For someone with no life, no family and no friends (besides the online weirdos you'd talk to from time to time), that was kinda good, if you could say so yourself.
You had stability, even though it came with the cost of being tied down to a military base chock-full of people who didn't really understand you.
That was fine though. THAT, you were used to. It comes with the neurodivergence: the side eyes, the whispers and the isolation.
What you weren't used to, however, was how your heart would race like a rabbit on a run for its life whenever you knocked on that one door. And you had to knock on it quite a lot of times.
You rapped your knuckles against the hardwood once more when you got no reply, cracking the door open just a little bit to peek inside.
"Cap?" You said, voice almost a whisper. After a few seconds, you heard an answer.
"Come in, love. Didn't know it was you." A strong, booming voice came from inside and you swallowed the lump on your throat that always formed whenever you had to go to Price's office.
Not because you were afraid of him, no. On the contrary. Maybe Price and the rest of the task force were the only ones who didn't treat you like an aberration – probably because they were aberrations of their own merit.
Maybe it was stupid of you to get giddy over being treated well by some of your coworkers, but when the bare minimum was so rare, you latched onto it like a dog with a bone.
And in spite of yourself, you couldn't control your own heart. It would be racing like a schoolgirl with a crush whenever you went to visit any of the men from the task force. You gave up on trying to tame it.
"Hi Cap" you said, with a small smile, approaching his desk. On the corner of your eyes, you saw the other three burly men that made up 141 and waved.
"Hey, lass, good ta see ya!" Soap hollered, voice loud as ever. You could probably feel it vibrating inside your bones if he spoke for a little longer and you loved it; as much as you envied it. What wouldn't you do to be just a little bit outgoing like that? Maybe things would be just a tad easier.
"How can I help my favorite secretary?" Price asked, the corner of his eyes wrinkling as he smiled, crow's feet getting a lot more pronounced in a way you probably thought of more than you should.
You scoffed, rolling your eyes.
"I'm your only secretary."
"Doesn't make my statement any less true."
You shook your head and placed a manila folder in front of him.
"I need your autograph, Cap."
"What for?"
"Because I'm your biggest fan and I wanna put it on my refrigerator...?" You answered humorously, and Price raised an eyebrow. You sighed. "We need to authorize the training of a few new recruits and they need your approval. So I need you to sign it."
Price huffed out a low chuckle and began leafing through the needlessly thick document. You poked your finger into the folder, fishing out the last pages, and walked towards the other men sitting on the other side of the office.
"I like today's dress, love." Gaz was manspreading on one of Price's armchairs, head resting on his palm as he gave you an once over. If it were anyone else, you'd probably hate the way you were being perceived – it usually made you feel like a bug being watched through a magnifying glass. But under his gaze, you just felt like a doll being admired.
"Do you, now? It's one of my favorites." You bowed dramatically while holding the hem of the dress. It was just another one of the black frilly dresses that you wore like a signature. It flew around you as you spun on your feet to show the black ribbon on the back.
"Adorable as always. If I wasn't selfish, I would say it's wasted inside this base, but I like to have you around way too much." His eyes gleamed with mirth and, in any other situation, you'd think he was secretly mocking you – but not Kyle. Not any one of them. You knew the compliments were genuine, even if they didn't understand why you insisted on sticking out like a sore thumb when it brought you so many problems.
You knew they would never really understand how masking could hurt you, but you were grateful they still defended your decision on just being yourself.
"Look at tha' key on yer neck." Soap pointed at your necklace. "I ken what's tha' for. It's the key to my heart, aye?" He said with an exaggerated wink and a smile that could blind you.
"Yeah, yeah, whatever you say." You rolled your eyes, smiling, and pushed a paper into his hand and did the same with Gaz and Ghost.
"I need your autographs as well. You heard my explanation already."
" 'm not built for a life of fame, love." Simon grunted, shifting on his seat right beside Soap.
"Too late, the spotlight already found you. Now you gotta give me your autograph or I'm gonna cancel you on social media."
He huffed.
"Don't ya think I should have been canceled a long time ago?"
"Probably." You shrugged, and handed him a pen. "I like my favorites problematic, what can I say."
Soap barked out a laugh, mindlessly scanning the document and Ghost merely shook his head.
"Do I gotta sign this? Don't really feel like training new runts." The masked man muttered and you shrugged.
"Don't shoot the messenger. I don't really want new young men around me either." You walked back towards Price's desk after collecting the documents and placed them neatly inside the folder after he was done surveying every single fine print.
"What do you guys want for lunch?" You asked as you tucked the documents under your arm. Price clicked his tongue.
"You don't have to keep bothering with making food for us, love. We can all eat at the canteen like everyone else." The older man leaned back on his chair, folding his arms.
You looked to the side, with a small pout on your lips.
"But if I make you guys' lunch, then I can emotionally blackmail you into eating with me at the kitchen." You mumbled, avoiding any and all eye contact.
"So it was all a ploy to keep us nearby? I thought you were doing that because you liked us. I'm so hurt, dear." Kyle spoke up from his seat, a dramatic hand over his chest as he leaned his head back. You put a hand over your mouth, hiding your grin.
"Maybe I'm just learning a thing or two from hanging around tacticians?"
"Aw, Captain, come on. How can we leave the poor doll hangin'? And we get ta eat actually good food, not that canteen slop! Come on!"
Price sighed, shaking his head in defeat.
"Anything you make will be great, love."
"As long as it has proteins and carbs." Ghost added from his seat and you snickered. He had already seen you eating your comfort foods before and, needless to say, he didn't approve of them.
"As long as it has proteins and carbs." Price repeated, with a nod.
"Proteins and carbs, okay, got it." You said with a fierce nod, walking back towards the door to the older man's office. "Meet you guys at the kitchen?"
"1200, sharp." Price said, with eyes as soft as the smile under his moustache. You gave him a small salute on your way out.
"Yessir."
This will probably be a little anthology of scenes I think of, involving poly!141 x neurodivergent reader who works for them as a secretary. They might not have much continuity but I'm using this as a self-healing, self-indulgent blog, separated from my main. Expect mostly fluff and angst from me.

this is the only post i've seen talk about the parallels between them. i saw the same parallels on my first ever read and was confused why no one in the fandom ever brought it up.. and it's enhanced by the fact that you'd expect wylan to disrespect kaz (as he rightfully should), but he has such a level of respect for kaz that certain other characters don't really have.. and i think it's interesting especially since kaz was kind of the one who dragged him down this 'terrible' path.
and the fact that in ck kaz seems to have a 'soft spot' for kaz by which i mean in the van eck mansion heist scene he teaches wylan what his life views and values are, and wylan understanding and accepting those values later on, and it really drove the point that they're so similar yet so different.
like i think whenever kaz imparts his life's wisdom to others it's usually in kind of a condescending(?) or throwaway kind of way for example with matthias.. but with wylan it's more of an encouraging way. because kaz Does know what wylan's went through (even though it's not everything), and it's as if he's sympathising with wylan, and the reveal that kaz wanted to give wylan his father's fortune from the start. like he could've simply Not done that. but he knows what it feels like to want revenge. he knows what it feels like to be knocked so far down it feels impossible to climb back up. he knows the feeling of the world not owing you anything but you wanting to take from it anyway. he knows what it is to feel like you're carrying a life debt with you. where to channel the anger to. how to channel it. so he helps wylan acquire his revenge. but he doesn't do it by handing it out for free to wylan. he leaves him with choices, with words to rhink about, with actions to mull over.
he knew marya hendriks was alive. he let wylan think he go to saint hilde of his own accord, thinking it was his own decision that he was making, allowed wylan to nurture his grudge against his father. saying he doesn't care about wylan's disability, showing his father was in fact just a massive prick and that wylan wasn't anything less for being illiterate. the mini clash of ideals in the van eck mansion heist, with wylan not wanting to do more than is necessary and kaz telling wylan about how he views life. kaz saying "you do know we're stealing your momey, right?" at the beginning of the book and wylan only realising it at the auction.
yes, kaz planned a lot and he allowed for a lot of the things to happen, but these things happened in the first place because of wylan. it was wylan's will that allowed him to survive the harbour. it was wylan's will that he decided to seemingly go against kaz's orders and lie to him and discover his mother's fate. it was wylan that decided to go with the heist and break into the safe. it was wylan that put the final nail in the coffin for van eck when he revealed himself to the public during the auction. it was wylan, his actions and his acting that caused the ultimate downfall of his own father at the auction. because without him, the public couldn't ever be truly convinced. the safe couldn't be broken into. his mother would spend the rest of her days in saint hilde. kaz was a lever that allowed wylan to finally enact his revenge.
gosh i really love their dynamic in ck and it wasn't something i expected after soc. in fact in soc i wasn't really interested in wylan, but ck really turned the world upside down for me. i didn't expect so many parallels. i didn't expect wylan as a character to be so close to my heart. ck's set up for his character development was so beautiful and so natural that it made me realise just how far he's truly come. for the other crows, we are told their backstory and how they've come to be like this. but for wylan we actively see his life as a crow coming to fruition.
wylan isn't even one of my top favourite characters but his character (for me) was so masterfully handled it really absorbed into my heart. i can't believe he's the first character that i'm writing for lol but this post just really made me realise just how great wylan's character is
(warning: literary analysis ahead) i know i'm not the first person by far to say this, but there are so many similarities between kaz and wylan in six of crows and ESPECIALLY crooked kingdom.
there's obviously the big one of both of them having a re-birth type experience in the harbor, but that's not where the similarity stops. during my ck reread, i noticed that the reason kaz and wylan are in the harbor in the first place is because a father-like figure.
pekka rollins was a father-like figure to both kaz and jordie, and the book says this. the rietveld boys had just lost their father, and one of the big reasons pekka was able to scam jordie and kaz so well is because he provided them with a comforting and parental like space. kaz ofc eventually ends up in the harbor, and it can all be traced back to pekka rollins.
wylan has his rebirth in the harbor due to his father. the connection is more direct with his, but even then there are middle men and other things involved. but again, it can all be traced back to his father.
going off this thought, they both lost a close family member due to a father figure.
another big similarity i found that i feel like i haven't seen anyone talk about his what kaz and wylan are both motivated by: revenge.
wylan does not start off the books being motivated by revenge. he ends up in the barrel and with the crows out of a desperation to both hide from his father and because he genuinely has no where else to go. later on in ck, after wylan finds his mother at saint hilde, the book very clearly states that his motivation changes. at the begining of chapter 31, there's a scene where wylan is staring at himself in the mirror. there are lines that say, "What am I doing here? But he knew the answer. Only he could see his father punished for what he'd done. Only he could see his mother freed." which drives me INSANE!! because it's a DIRECT PARELLEL to things kaz says/feels about jordie!! in the chapter right before that (30) there's a line that says, "He'd found his way to shore, devoted himself to the vengeance he and his brother were owed." (there are other and better lines that reference wylan's "only he could *take revenge*" line, but this is just the closest one that comes to mind)
there are differences between their motives—you could say that kaz's revenge motive is more direct and violent—but there's also the fact that we see both kaz and wylan get their revenge in the book.
both kaz and wylan want revenge for one of their family members, and themselves, from what a father figure in their life has done.
they've also both been kidnapped by jan/held in captivity by him. i know this happens to inej too, but i think it's important that one of the first scenes we see with kaz is him negotiating with jan after being captured by him, and then towards the very end of the series, we (very simplified and on the surface) see the same thing happening to wylan. i know the two jan captivity scenes with kaz and wylan are very different, but i think the basic similarity of these scenes really attest to how far wylan has come and how much he's been assimilated into the crows.
there's also of course the part where wylan's expression is said to be something that looks kaz-like, which i feel also shows how far he's come and how he's truely developed into a crow.
in conclusion, as others have said, they truely are two sides of the same coin. they're so different but so alike, and i absolutely love how leigh bardugo was able to directly juxstapose wylan and kaz when they're so different on the surface.
#six of crows#senti's archives#wylan van eck#wylan hendriks#kaz brekker#i really didn't expect this to be so long#this post made me realise just how important of a character wylan is to me#thanks op#i love their parallels so much#its a dynamic that came from the window that i now hold dearly to my heart#i could ramble on forever#i really didn't expect something like this from soc/ck#a happy surprise#i love when characters juxtapose each other#and the fact that in a way wylan also caused kaz's character to develop too#kaz brekker saw wylan van eck and in him saw kaz rietveld#ok im done

Kaz shrugged. “Kill us, and you’ll never find Kuwei.” Van Eck appeared to consider this. Then he stepped back. “Guards to me!” he shouted. “Kill everyone but Brekker!” Kaz knew the instant he made his mistake. They’d all known it might come to this. He should have trusted his crew. His eyes should have stayed trained on Van Eck. Instead, in that moment of threat, when he should have thought only of the fight, he looked at Inej. And Van Eck saw it. He blew on his whistle. “Leave the others! Get the money and the girl.”
