re your tags on the names of Marjan's family. So Marjan's name is not a Lebanese name?
Also I'm curious to your takes on her getting engaged/introducing Joe to her parents 👀
nope. and neither is Marwani actually. Marjan is persian Iranian and Marwani (and it's actually often Almarwani) is Algerian and Saudi Arabian.
i'm curious actually but there aren't certain positive expectations I'm waiting for here with this storyline. the inaccuracy of the name thing alone was something i immediately rolled my eyes at lol. I mean lucky the pilot was so good in every way I was hooked from the jump because otherwise if i had to think twice about Marjan's disastrous praying I'd have been turned off.
It's clear that Natacha did not get the assistance she needed to give Marjan what she needs. not as simple as guiding her on how to properly pray. But are we surprised that the american TV's portrayal of Arabs falls short in many ways due to lack of cultural competence in writers' rooms/ lack of research and guidance from diaspora Arab Muslim creatives? I mean their first thought about Marjan was like hmm how can we introduce this veiled woman in a storyline that portrays her well without trying to objectify her? oh let's take that veil off and see her hair! I don't hate this storyline but it just doesn't fully sit right with me either. especially as an intro.
so I don't know how they're going to go about this whole thing with Joe but I for one really hated the arranged marriage storyline. Yes it's so normal here for family & friends to try to set up adults. but i just can't stand watching the portrayal of I've-been-engaged-since-I-was-12 and playing it into "love is something you grow into" as a commonplace in muslim Arab culture and not something so questionable and rather a fucked up constraint on people (that has been fought against for decades). not even considering the class, ethnic and national difference that plays into it, given how underage arranged marriage or forced marriage is an actual piled up generational struggle rooted in gender inequality and exacerbated by colonial violence and wars. being cut off from the access to education, the creation of extreme poverty that makes families (especially displaced ones) struggle to provide for their kids and fear for their safety and future and so some come to the conclusion that marriage somehow could protect their kids from harm while providing them with a level of financial stability or facilitating moving in and out of besieged areas/cities and crossing boards etc.
And so it's clear that no one of Marjan's class/background in diaspora or back home would consider this to be the norm. so it's weird to me that this was welcomed normally. The writers just took a bunch of stereotypes about Muslims at large with no regard to national/ethnic or class background differences and turned them on their head.
another inconsistency is the chaperone/Mehrem (family member) thing. because first, actually once you're in public you don't need that during a date. second, someone like Marjan with her lifestyle, background, worldview/character and being a diaspora lebanese muslim in her 20s, would not follow an old Mehrem fatwa (the Islamic laws that change according time, place, people, and other prevailing conditions) unless she actually wants that out of having company.
I just don't think the writers engage with Marjan's background in a consistent realistic or authentic way. I didn't really see anything especially Lebanese about Marjan. beside what the mention of cuisines?
anyway i hate the idea of 'representation' in American media either way. It feels like an oxymoron. and the idea of seeing representation as an ultimate goal is even more dangerous. I find it counterproductive more often than not. this is an industry that perpetuates and financially aid violence and defamation narratives against said people that they pat themselves on the back for including and so it's naive to consider that they'll ever get it right. they tiptoe around certain people and tokenize them more than anything. Literally for every one good bare minimum representation there are dozens of American entertainment-military complex propaganda movies/tv shows/video games doing the exact opposite and taking it to extremes. I just always end up asking myself 'how is this exactly helpful? Yes it's entertaining i love watching it, i love this show but the things that plays into the bigger picture are still parts of the objective reality, what should I do about it?'

Kabsa: A Sneak-Peek Into This Delicious Arabian Food and What Makes It Flavorful and Special
Tumblr media
Kabsa or Arabian Kabsa is a popular and well-known flavourful dish that is more than a meal for Arabs. This culinary delight is from Saudi Arabia, but it is a Middle Eastern rice dish passed down for centuries. Kabsa dish is a national dish of Saudi Arabia.
It symbolizes tradition, hospitality, and cultural identity for Arabs. This culinary creation has echoes from the Indian sub-continent, the bold tastes of Africa, and the aromatic presence of Persia, and is woven into Saudi Arabia’s cuisine story.
Moreover, a few countries in the Gulf Peninsula, like Iran and Gaza, also cook the Arabic Kabsa on special occasions.
Origin and Importance of Kabsa Dish
Kabsa rice recipe, when prepared, is served on the communal platter for family and friends that originated from Yemen. These are traditionally large platters served at the center of the table. It is customary to eat Arabian food Kabsa using the right hand while the people are seated around the platter on the floor. It is said to foster closeness and
The traditional Kabsa recipe is different from other recipes mainly prepared in Iran, India, and Israel.
Historically speaking, the Kabsa Arabian dish was originally prepared by Bedouin tribes. They used to roam the Arabic Peninsula and relied on simple ingredients to cook their food. It was rice, chicken, lamb, and aromatic spices.
A few regions in Saudi Arabia may have many versions of the Kabsa rice dish, but the major ingredients remain the same. Kabsa means to squeeze or press, the technique where all the ingredients are squeezed into one pot.
The importance of meat and spices in Arab Kabsa is due to the country’s livestock supply and the rich source of aromatic herbs and spices. Another reason for the broader impact of Arabic food Kabsa is the types of spices used.
The Arabic households mainly use black pepper, cardamom, cloves, saffron, black lime, cinnamon, nutmeg, and bay leaves. Meats that people usually use include goat, lamb, chicken, beef, camel, shrimp, and fish. The taste of this dish is augmented using pine nuts, almonds, onions, sultanas, and peanuts. It becomes savory when served with homemade Arabic tomato sauce Daqqus.
Is Kabsa Arabic Dish Healthy?
The chicken Kabsa rice dish or meat rice dish Kabsa is prepared using the meat ingredients, basmati rice, and spices.
Long-grain rice or Basmati Rice is the primary carbohydrate source that provides energy. Meat products like chicken, lamb, goat, etc., are a source of protein and help with muscle growth and repair. The variety of spices used in Kabsa Saudi food imparts flavor and offers various health-promoting compounds and antioxidants.
Vegetables like carrots and tomatoes add minerals, vitamins, and fibers. The nuts like almonds, pine nuts, and peanuts are a primary source of Vitamin E, healthy fats, and essential nutrients.
However, people mindful of calorie intake must work on portion control. This rice recipe is rich in nature, so you must take care of your overall health.
Why is Kabsa Rice Recipe a Symbol of Cultural Significance?
The Arabic Kabsa rice is served at gatherings and special occasions. It reflects the hospitality and welcoming nature. The Kabsa dish is found in weddings, large family gatherings, and Eid celebrations.
The Kabsa dish recipe is passed down through generations, but every family makes it unique according to its culinary heritage.
It is a communal eating dish served on a large platter, reinforcing togetherness and establishing social bonds among friends and family members.
The rich and satisfying flavors add to the aroma of the dish. It is a time-honored dish serving diverse Saudi regions and their traditions.
Kabsa is the national dish that serves as the country’s culinary pride. It is part of their national identity, so people eat the Kabsa dish for Suhoor during Ramadan. The traditional Kabsa is prepared in a pot, but most households prepare it in a pressure cooker.
We know about the Kabsa dish, but you must know the ingredients and cooking directions. So, let’s check that out below.
Details on Ingredients of Kabsa Arabic Dish and Directions for Cooking
You can prepare a chicken Kabsa or a mutton Kabsa recipe; the choice is yours. However, authentic Kabsa is prepared using lamb or goat meat, and chicken is a secondary choice.
Let’s check out its ingredients and its cooking directions.
   Ingredients for Rice and Meat
1.5 cups long-grain basmati rice, thoroughly washed
4 tablespoons of Grapeseed oil, Canola Oil, or Olive Oil
1 small yellow diced onion
1 diced plum tomato
1 tablespoon Kabsa spice mix (you can purchase it from the market or check its ingredients below)
1 pound bone-in lamb cut into small pieces (you can use variations like chicken, goat, camel, fish, beef, or shrimp)
5 cardamom pods
5 cloves or 1/8 teaspoon of clove powder
2 cinnamon sticks or ½ teaspoon of cinnamon powder
2 ¼ cups of water (enough to cover basmati rice)
2 to 3 whole dried limes
½ teaspoon saffron threads (for colour)
1 teaspoon sea salt
   Ingredients for Kabsa Spice Mix
1 teaspoon cumin powder
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
¼ teaspoon pepper flakes
½ teaspoon coriander powder
½ teaspoon fennel powder
1 teaspoon ground ginger
½ teaspoon of all other spices
Directions: Mix them all in a container and use only one tablespoon in the preparation. You can save the rest for future Kabsa dishes.
   Cooking Directions for Kabsa
Heat the oil of your choice in a large Dutch oven or ground pot. Add tomatoes and sauté alongside meat pieces until brown.
Add the Kabsa spice mix, cloves, cinnamon, and cardamom. Add saffron threads, water, salt, and dried limes. First, bring it to a boil. Then, lower the flame to bring it to a rolling boil. Cover and cook for 30 minutes.
Clean the basmati rice thoroughly and soak them. After that, add them to the cooking pot.
Bring all the contents in the pot to boil, and then lower the flame to reduce the heat. Cover the lid tightly, and do not open it for another 20 minutes.
After 20 minutes, open the pot lid and stir gently to check if the rice is cooked well. When everything is done, turn off the heat. Uncover the pot after 10 minutes to check if the dish has settled.
Take a big serving platter, and add chopped herbs, chili pepper, onion, and lamb shanks over rice.
Garnish the Kabsa dish with toasted raisins, nuts, cilantro, almonds, and pistachio.
Note: You can serve the chicken Kabsa rice or lamb Kabsa rice with fresh yogurt, salad, or homemade tomato sauce.
It is all about the Kabsa dish preparation. However, good quality long-grain basmati rice is the heart and soul of this dish. Households mainly pick the unique and rare T20ZZZ Long-grain basmati rice for this recipe. It adds soul to this national dish.
T20ZZZ: Rare and Good Quality Basmati Rice for Arabic Dish Kabsa
Kabsa dish is a national heritage that represents the Arabian Peninsula’s culinary tradition, especially in Saudi Arabia. The Arabs use the finest spices, meat, and great quality basmati rice to impart the dish its flavor and enhancement.
All this is possible because of the long-grain basmati rice. T20ZZZ, The rice is known for its rare quality and the 8.40mm+ length when it is uncooked. Its extraordinary length expands up to 3 times when it is cooked in the pot.
T20ZZZ remains fine, long, and slender without getting mushy when stirred slowly. It elevates the taste of this Saudi iconic dish. The ability of T20ZZZ Long-Grain Basmati Rice to retain its shape after cooking makes it a first choice in the Arabian Peninsula. It makes Kabsa dish sumptuous and lip-smacking

Saudi Arabia Retail Market: Growth, Trends, and Opportunities
The Saudi Arabian retail market has emerged as one of the fastest-growing sectors in the Middle East, driven by economic diversification initiatives, a young population, and increasing consumer spending. With the Vision 2030 framework paving the way for modernization and reforms, the retail landscape is undergoing a significant transformation. This article delves into the key factors shaping the retail market in Saudi Arabia, current trends, and potential opportunities for businesses.
Tumblr media
Key Drivers of Growth
Vision 2030 and Economic Diversification
Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 initiative aims to reduce the country’s dependence on oil by diversifying its economy. The retail sector is a crucial pillar of this strategy, with investments being made to develop modern infrastructure, encourage foreign direct investment (FDI), and promote e-commerce.
Growing Urbanization and Population
Saudi Arabia’s population, predominantly young and urban, is a key driver of retail growth. Approximately 70% of the population lives in urban areas, where demand for modern retail formats such as malls, hypermarkets, and specialty stores is rising.
Rising Disposable Income
The Kingdom’s per capita income has been steadily increasing, boosting consumer spending. This trend, coupled with a shift in lifestyle preferences, has fueled demand for luxury goods, electronics, and fashion.
Emerging Trends in the Retail Market
E-commerce Boom
The adoption of e-commerce in Saudi Arabia has accelerated, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic. According to recent studies, the e-commerce market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 20% in the coming years. Platforms such as Noon and Amazon are gaining traction, and local businesses are also leveraging online channels to expand their reach.
Expansion of Retail Spaces
Developers are focusing on creating world-class retail destinations, including large shopping malls and entertainment hubs. Projects like The Avenues Riyadh and the Mall of Saudi are set to redefine the shopping experience by integrating retail, dining, and leisure activities.
Rise of Omni-channel Retailing
Retailers are increasingly adopting an omni-channel approach, blending online and offline experiences to meet evolving customer expectations. This strategy allows for seamless shopping experiences, including click-and-collect services, in-store returns for online purchases, and personalized marketing.
Focus on Sustainability
Sustainability has become a focal point for retail businesses in Saudi Arabia. Brands are incorporating eco-friendly practices, such as reducing plastic usage and adopting energy-efficient technologies, to align with global standards and appeal to environmentally conscious consumers.
Opportunities for Investors and Businesses
Entry of International Brands
Saudi Arabia’s retail market presents lucrative opportunities for international brands seeking expansion. With relaxed FDI regulations and a growing appetite for global brands, the Kingdom has become a hotspot for luxury and mid-tier retailers.
Growth in Food and Beverage Sector
The food and beverage (F&B) segment is one of the fastest-growing sub-sectors within retail. The rising demand for dining experiences, coupled with a preference for international cuisines, has led to the proliferation of cafes, restaurants, and fast-food outlets.
Tech-Driven Retail Solutions
Investing in technology-driven solutions such as artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), and data analytics can help retailers enhance customer experiences and streamline operations. Personalized recommendations, virtual try-ons, and smart payment systems are examples of innovations gaining momentum.
Expansion into Tier-2 and Tier-3 Cities
While major cities like Riyadh and Jeddah dominate the retail landscape, smaller cities are emerging as untapped markets. Businesses can explore opportunities in these regions to cater to underserved populations.
Challenges and Mitigation Strategies
Regulatory Hurdles
Although reforms have eased restrictions, navigating regulatory frameworks can still pose challenges for new entrants. Partnering with local firms and staying updated on policy changes can help mitigate risks.
Competition in E-commerce
The rapid growth of e-commerce has intensified competition. Businesses must differentiate themselves through unique value propositions, competitive pricing, and superior customer service.
Cultural Sensitivities
Understanding and respecting Saudi Arabia’s cultural norms is critical for success. Tailoring marketing strategies and product offerings to align with local values can build brand trust and loyalty.
Conclusion
The Saudi Arabian retail market is on an upward trajectory, offering immense potential for growth and innovation. With supportive government policies, a tech-savvy population, and increasing consumer demand, the sector is poised for sustained expansion. Businesses that adapt to market trends, invest in technology, and prioritize customer-centric strategies will be well-positioned to thrive in this dynamic landscape.

Saudi Arabian cuisine is shaped by the country's diverse landscapes and regions. The variety in environment, geography, and culture across this vast nation has resulted in a rich assortment of dishes. Each region - Central, Eastern, Southern, and Western - brings its own unique flavours to the table. Additionally, Saudi Arabia's location along major trade routes has introduced a range of spices, further enhancing the culinary diversity.
Tumblr media
It captures the vibrant ambiance and cultural essence with people enjoying traditional and modern dishes.
Saudi Arabian cooking is deeply influenced by both native Arab traditions and Islamic culture. For example, dates are a key part of breaking the fast after Ramadan. Many of the ingredients used, such as wheat, dates, ghee, meat, fish, and vegetables, are sourced locally. These ingredients are used to create a variety of delicious dishes that are closely tied to Saudi customs and traditions.
These meals are often enjoyed during festive seasons, Hajj, special occasions, weddings, and when celebrating the birth of a child. Offering these dishes to guests is a way of showing generosity and showcasing the well-known hospitality of the Saudi people. Many of these traditions continue to be upheld today.
The Rich Tapestry of Saudi Arabian Flavors
Saudi cuisine is known for its rich and aromatic flavours, thanks to the generous use of various spices. Saffron, with its golden colour and delicate taste, is often used to add a touch of luxury to dishes. Cinnamon brings a gentle sweetness to meat dishes, while dried black lime adds a unique tangy flavour. Asafoetida, a resinous spice, contributes a strong aroma, enhancing the depth and complexity of traditional recipes.
Cooking techniques in Saudi Arabian cuisine harken back to age-old methods used for generations, reflecting the need to preserve foods in a harsh desert environment.
Slow cooking in a tandoor (underground clay oven) or over an open fire is common, and this gentle, patient approach to cooking meat until it's tender and flavorful, is a hallmark of the cuisine. Roasting and baking are other traditional techniques that imbue Saudi dishes with a distinctive smoky aroma and taste.
Saudi Arabia's rich culinary heritage is a feast for the senses, deeply rooted in its culture and traditions. From aromatic dishes like Kabsa and Mandi to sweet treats like Kunafa and Ma'amoul, the flavors reflect the warmth of Arabian hospitality. Edible gold leaf can be used to add a touch of opulence, reminiscent of the gilded details found in many Saudi palaces and mosques. Another technique you can try is using edible paints to create watercolor effects, or a gradient of colors on a fondant background.
