guys guys guys I finished Part I of my Historical AU!!! 🥳 It's a little over 15k words, combined with the scenes I've written for parts 2&3 is a total of 22k. My goal for the whole thing is 40k, so I think I'm well on the way to getting there.

Thank you all for your support and patience with me. I can't wait to share this story with you. In the meantime, here's the ao3 summary I'm leaning towards:

The year is 1780, and nobleman-turned-soldier Mon-El is unhappy and dissatisfied with his privileged but empty life in the south. That is, until he meets a girl at his parents’ ball who changes everything. They understand each other perfectly, and with his parents pressuring him to marry, there would be no better match than her—except that they come from wildly different backgrounds. With a heavy heart, Mon-El walks away and takes a wife his family approves of. Two years later, their paths cross again, him a different man and her as lovely and sharp as ever. Will he be able to give her up a second time?

And also an excerpt from each of the three romantic relationships. Karamel is the main one of course, but this is a Mon-El centric fic first so there are a few other relationships explored throughout.

Karamel:

As they spoke back and forth, Mon-El found himself admitting more and more, letting her into the parts of his mind that no one else had access to. It was hard to describe, but he had never felt so…understood. They both felt that pull, to make things better, to create change instead of just being content with the way things were. And at the same time, she made him feel like a better version of himself. Like the self that he wanted to be, someone who acted instead of standing by and wishing for a miracle to get him out of his miserable life.

Monwinn:

They scampered back to the tent hand-in-hand, already falling into each other before the flap was closed. Mon-El pulled him down to the floor and tugged at his clothing impatiently, Winn’s teeth scraping against his neck. For a precious few minutes, or perhaps closer to an hour, there were no wives or betrotheds or strict parents to speak of—just them, panting in the half-dark and drinking each other in one last time.

Mimra:

“But it isn’t obligation,” Mon-El said earnestly. On impulse he rose and joined her on the settee, hesitantly taking her hand in his. “Ms. Ardeen—Imra, if I may call you that—I know our relationship is not quite of a romantic nature, but I care for you deeply. Even if I had the choice of any woman in the state, I would still choose you as my bride. You are kind and clever and…” He exhaled. “I am proud to call you my very good friend. Happy marriages have been based on less, have they not?”

Mon-El presses his hands to Imra’s rounded stomach, smiling as he feels the baby kick against his palm. “I can’t believe you’re almost ready to give birth.”

“I’m more than ready,” Imra replies with a groan. “I’m never doing this again.”

��I can’t wait to meet you,” Mon-El coos at her stomach. “We’re going to spoil you rotten, aren’t we?”

“If we don’t, the rest of the Legion will,” Imra replies dryly. “I think Brainy and Lyle are already preparing, and I’m sure everyone else won’t be far behind.”

“Our child will be perfect and deserve every bit of spoiling.”

“So I’m going to have to be the strict parent, aren’t I?”

Mon-El offers her a sheepish smile. “I think we both know I won’t be able to say no to our child.”

“I’m not sure I will be either,” Imra admits, looking down at her stomach. “I guess we’ll have to wait and see.”

“Only a few more days,” Mon-El says, pressing a kiss to Imra’s stomach.

“Only a few more days,” Imra agrees. “Then we’ll have a baby. We’ll be parents.”

“We’re ready,” Mon-El says confidently. “We’ve been preparing for the past nine months. And we’ve been the parents of the Legion for years, so it’s almost like we’ve been preparing since the group began.”

Imra laughs. “I’m not sure how much taking care of a baby will be similar to wrangling a team of superheroes, but I think we’ll figure it out.”

“Yeah,” Mon-El says, looking up at Imra as if she hung the stars, “I think we will.”

It’s not often that Mon-El and Imra get to have a nice, totally job-free date night. Often, the closest they get to going on dates is attending events as representatives of the Legion, or occasionally as representatives of the United Planets. When they do get time to be together, it almost never lasts for long before there’s some crisis they need to deal with. The chance to just go out uninterrupted without an agenda is a rare one.

That’s why they both seized the opportunity when it was offered, but that’s also why they’re both just waiting for it to fall through.

“I feel like we’re about to get called back,” Imra admits over dumplings. “There’s no reason why we should be, but it’s always what happens, isn’t it?”

“I feel the same way,” Mon-El admits. “I’ve checked for a message at least five times already.”

“The others can handle things without us, can’t they?” Imra asks. “If it’s anything big, they’d contact us, but what are the chances that something big is going to happen?”

“Considering our track record? Pretty high.”

Imra shrugs, conceding the point.

“But they can handle it,” Mon-El adds. “We should just focus on our date.”

“Right,” Imra agrees. “These dumplings are delicious.”

Mon-El grins. “Glad you like them.”

They’re both silent for a minute, then Imra asks, “Are you still waiting to be called back?”

“Oh, definitely.”

I can’t believe with all the”character development”, Mon El Is still an jerk. Seriously he’s been married for imra for 7 YEARS and he still has feelings for Kara. Now Imra is forced to become his rebound girl? Unacceptable. Imra deserves so much better than that. Oh, and screw all Karamel fans for thinking this ok or for justifying this. Sorry but y’all suck.

EDIT: Ok, turns out I was wrong about the marriage lasting for 7 years. Mon El was in the future for 7 years but it was never confirmed to actually be 7 years. However, my other points still stand.

Mon-El Appreciation Week Day 5: Favorite Relationships

Yeah, I ship both Karamel and Saturnvalor. I know. I KNOW. I make no sense to me, either.

Let's just say, when Imra showed up, I have a very firm rule that I'm not going to fall down the antifeminist trash hole of automatically hating the other woman in the love triangle, but I was nnnoooot here for the triangle nonsense. But I went down the rabbit hole pretty fast. Imra's first episode: "Oh no, she's cute." Imra's second episode: "Oh no, they're really cute." Imra's third episode: "OH NO SHE JUST REFERENCED BON JOVI ALL BETS ARE OFF."

Okay first of all, because this is Mon-El Appreciation Week, I really appreciate the role Imra plays in his life. I am not trying to say that she's a copy of Kara, but I like that Imra, who points to Kara as her life's inspiration, is a similar foil to Mon-El's pragmatism with her optimism. And I think it's really beautiful that this guy, who has literally lost two entire worlds and who would have every right in the world to just quit and shut himself off, eventually opens himself up to love again because of her. It's really beautiful.

Because he does love her. They're friends and partners whose development to something more is initially because of political reasons. But even if you wanted to ignore his own admission, in canon dialogue, that his feelings deepened over time, I invite you to go back and watch 3x07 - his oh god realization when he realizes that it’s Imra’s life support that’s failing, his absolute blind panic when he's trying to break her out of the stasis chamber, and then the way he runs to her and kisses her like she's the only person in the room at the end of the episode. And my heart proceeds to shatter for Kara but OH MAN that kiss.

I love that they can have an entire conversation in only a LOOK, because they've been partners for so long they can just read each other. This is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE.

“Uh, this is where you’re supposed to step up.” "We really shouldn't do this." "Tommy and Gina ... " "Why do you always win?"

And this is another one of my favorites -

I love her understanding smile because she knows that this is difficult for him, and she’s going to give him the space to have his feelings about Kara without getting defensive about it. And I love how he touches her leg before following Kara out to reassure her that yes, I have feelings, but some of them are for you.

I really love their “old married person” fights, especially because they’re usually about “the car” and she usually wins because gender roles are BS.

I love that when they split up, it's with this incredible respect and love for one another, and wanting to put the other first. Imra knows Mon-El still loves Kara, and Mon-El hears Imra when she says she deserves someone who loves her with a whole heart. I think Imra is the one comforting him right now after he's been forced to leave the 21st century behind, and it's not weird at all, because whatever else they are, they are dear friends. And I think there's definitely a version of the story where Imra finds love again afterward and Mon-El gives the guy a shovel talk

We could have a whole discussion about why Imra lied to him and how we only got him as an unreliable narrator rather than hearing her side of the story and whether or not he gave himself more of a pass to emotionally cheat after that but that would be another 800 words and come on I just want to enjoy the fluff today.

This is my mea culpa. I was not a fan of Mon El & Imra last season and I admit to being totally prejudiced because I was so invested in Karamel getting back together.

However, in retrospect, I have begun to appreciate at least the way the two actors portrayed the relationship, even if the writing season 3 was often subpar and very little time was spent on their character development/relationship. 

Mon El and Imra were sweet together and the actors portrayed an obvious affection and close rapport between the two - often communicating more by looks than by words. They were partners who supported each other and lived to serve. Both had committed themselves to be heroes following Supergirl’s example. 

It was sometimes hard to determine who worshipped Kara/Supergirl more - Mon El or Imra. They both had stars in their eyes whenever they looked at Kara/Supergirl.

I am happy that Mon El actually found comfort and support, love and companionship with Imra during those 7 years he was stuck in the future. It was a totally different kind of love between them than Karamel, more based on a common goal rather than being passionate soulmates oozing sexual tension. In many ways a more mature relationship, which is not so strange as they had years to get to that point and Karamel merely months.

There are several glimpses in season 3 of old Mon El for a short moment smiling and joking with Imra, seemingly the only relief he got from being the serious superhero leader making the life-or-death decisions all the time. Her touch soothed him and helped him relax - this was good acting by both of them telling a whole story without words.

In the end, Imra realized that Mon El still had feelings for Kara and left him on Earth to sort out his feelings. When the Legion returned they had a heart-to-heart for closure and Imra had realized their marriage had never been what it should have been. She also could not bring herself to break his heart by bringing up that he had to leave Kara again and return to the future. Brainy had to do that, correctly having calculated that the odds were 0% that Mon El would be smiling had he heard that news.

By the end of the season 3 finale, I was equally pissed off that they had teased us so with a possible Karamel reunion episode 3x16-3x22 and that they sent Mon El back to the future to be a hero but alone this time without the at least the love and companionship of Imra. 

In summary, I can now appreciate the relationship between Mon El and Imra and the role it played for storytelling in season 3. However, the season finale was still a giant clusterfuck that made little sense, did not do justice to any of the charaters and just broke hearts all around. 

I still hope that Mon El and the Legion will return on Supergirl in season 5, at least for the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover episodes. It would be a waste not to when they have been introduced as part of the Arrowverse and the Legion ring shown multiple times in Supergirl and The Flash. 

I wish to see the SuperValor mid-air “kiss for luck” before a battle and perhaps a slip of the tongue by a Legion member that Supergirl, Superman & J’onn will all be with the Legion in the future at some point in their version of the universe/timeline. This would bring me some satisfaction and closure, with my headcanon firmly established of a happily ever after for Karamel in the future.
