Back again to talk about The Quarry like it’s my job. Obviously I’m partial to Dylan myself and I was from minute one, but I was talking to @caesurah-tblr about how I basically make a game of watching streamers go from not liking him or even hating him to absolutely loving him and then @andromaqves reblogged the post that got us talking about it with the following tags so now I MUST KNOW…
Edit: I totally forgot to add his SOS message as a possible turning point I guess that goes under ‘other.’

I'm getting Unknown's first episode, Cherry Magic's episode 11 (of doom?), The Sign's finale, and DEAD FRIEND FOREVER on Saturday.
My job is about to get the most from me on a Friday because it will get absolutely nothing from me this weekend. I need a day to watch and a day to recover. I'm not even answering one single email. If anyone needs me, they can find me on Monday. It's about to be Super SaturGay!

Setting, setting, setting
Can I talk about setting for a second?
*deep breath*
I talked about setting a lot in this post from Ep6, so why not do it again, when we have basically seen the VP equivalent of KP's Ep6 arc?
KP in Ep6 and VP in Eps11-12 represent the difference between nature and artificiality--between bright, vibrant, natural tones and dark, fluorescent, grim ones. For example:
Nature Vs. Artificiality
I’ve been known to ramble, but I’m going to try to contain myself here. The show has already depicted the contrast in KP and VP’s relationships in multiple ways, but the detail with coloring and setting stands out prominently. Why? Because Pete’s captivity is strikingly different than Kinn and Porsche’s reconciliation.
Kinn and Porsche were not in love before Ep6, but they had formed a connection already. They trusted each other to an extent, up until the end of Ep4. The forest is a place they don’t want to be at first, but grow to enjoy, because it’s sheltered them from the outside world. The trials of nature are ultimately far more manageable than the trials of the mafia.
The obvious difference for VP is that Vegas is the one forcing this captivity and alone time together. Vegas wants to use Pete for his own satisfaction and entertainment, while Pete wants no part in it; nothing is mutual about the situation. Additionally, they have established no prior positive relationship. They have never been on good terms with each other before now.
Despite all of this, the effects of KP in Ep6 and VP in Eps11 and 12 are very similar. They both enter a space where it is just the two of them--KinnPorsche and VegasPete. There are no expectations in these spaces. The end point is mutual connection.
Meant to Feel Wrong
How does setting tie into this if KP and VP’s story arcs end up in (relatively) the same place? Well, it’s important in establishing the mood, tone, and context of each relationship.
For KP, the freedom of nature perfectly aligns with the freedom of thought and feeling. Kinn can be his true self here without his father’s expectations bearing down on him. It all makes sense.
But VP doesn’t make sense. That’s the point. For Vegas and Pete, it feels wrong that they could possibly be open with each other in such a cramped, artificial space. It’s part of the reason why I think they decided to use such an intense track during their sex scene. Everything is supposed to feel off. The setting reflects that at every turn. But not the light.
This light is bright. This light is warm. Even though the spaces are cramped--not to mention, Pete is literally chained up--the aesthetics are tender and inviting. Once again, they don’t seem to fit together.
