The first interaction between two potential love interests is particularly crucial for setting expectations and establishing the connection between them.

Naruto and Sasuke's first meeting established the tension and rivalry between them but also managed to hint at the romantic undertones in their dynamic with a ship tease moment so iconic that it was

It was replicated, and subverted, to help set up the potential romantic relationship between their own children, Boruto and Sarada

Naruto and Sakura's first interaction is a completely different story. Naruto transforms to hear Sakura's opinion about him, and ends up hearing Sakura state that she dislikes Naruto and only desperately wants the acknowledgement of Sasuke because she likes him. And what does Naruto respond? He states that he finally understands why he likes her. HELLO? The hero of the manga states that he finally likes the heroine because she likes another boy, his rival to be exact, and wants his attention. It's almost like, Naruto too liked Sasuke and desperately wanted to receive Sasuke's acknowledgement and through this was able to relate to Sakura and project onto her.

Now in order to gain another perspective and try to lessen my bias, I took a look at the opinions of narusaku fans on one of the gayest scenes in the manga, and their belief was that this scene established that Naruto really and earnestly loved Sakura because he respected her dedication and hard work in terms of trying to attract Sasuke. And this explanation is particularly funny because not only is that still gay, but also, we never particularly see Naruto devote extreme attention to admiring Sakura's "dedication." In fact, we only sparsely see Naruto praise Sakura's hard work and it is never in a context that is related to Sasuke.

But you know what we do see? Naruto daydreaming about saving Sasuke. Naruto being extremely happy that Sasuke acknowledged in a text where the desire for acknowledgement is foregrounded as a romantic ideal. Naruto getting, and I'm not making this up, a tingling sensation in his lower parts when receiving acknowledgement from Sasuke.

And there's something more curious. When Sakura begs Naruto to bring back Sasuke, he states that Sakura must really like Sasuke. And then he states, I know how much pain youre in because of Sasuke. I can understand.

Now this is another big narusaku moment, and note that it happens because of Sasuke. This moment is celebrated because it's meant to prove the depths of Naruto's hetero love for Sakura and the lengths he's willing to go for her.

And yet, we have have the power of hindsight. We know that after this moment, Naruto will spend so long chasing Sasuke to the point that it will draw the ire of dudebros and become a meme. We know that Naruto will acknowledge that he is chasing Sasuke because he wants to, outside of any promise. We know that Sasuke will attempt to kill Sakura and threaten to kill every last person in the leaf (which again, includes Sakura) and Naruto will look Sasuke in the face after that, smile, and tell Sasuke that he was happy to have met Sasuke. And we know that when asked to explain the nature of his feelings he will say that ultimately, he feels pain for Sasuke, the same pain that's foregrounded as a romantic ideal in the manga.

Do you see where I'm getting at? Naruto's first interaction with Sasuke was used to establish the unique nature of his dynamic with Sasuke, while Naruto's dynamic with Sakura, the person that were supposed to believe he had a serious and intense heterosexual crush on, was used to foreshadow a bond primarily sustained by the mutual desire for another person.

And Kishimoto is aware of this fact.

I mean look at this scene between Konan and Yahiko. It's a classic romantic set up for an intimate moment. Yahiko and Konan are alone in a room. Konan bandages Yahiko after he's injured. Their eyes lock and they lean in... and we'll you know what's implied.

Now compare this moment to Naruto and Sakura sitting alone in a hospital during a moment that's a classic set up for a romantic scene. I mean things are going great. Naruto is being healed by Sakura and states that his new and dangerous jutsu is no big deal as long as he's got Sakura around to fix me. Naruto looks at Sakura and fondly smiles about how he likes the way things are now. And the moment is tense... why does Naruto like the way things are now? Is it because he's intimately close to Sakura? Let's see what happens on the next page?

NOPE! Naruto is happy because it feels like he and Sakura are on the road to finding Sasuke together. This moment actually makes me guffaw everytime I read it. I mean it's actually comical how Naruto managed to divert the potential romantic nature of a moment that could have been used to build upon his bond with Sakura. But it's also.... very in character for him. Narusaku is always relegated to comedic moments lacking in heartfelt pathos. At its core, it's always been centered on Sasuke.

I won't even bother addressing the Naruto and Hinata dynamic. There truly is nothing of note in their 40 pages and that's why SP had to cobble together scenes, some of which were stolen from Naruto and Sasuke's dynamic, for a genjutsu movie where Naruto was repeatedly insulted for the crime of not paying attention to Hinata.

But the main point is that none of the evidence that Naruto is supposed to be interested is women is meaningful in its own right. I mean if anything, there's a strong argument that it's a result of compulsory heterosexuality. If I dig deep I can think of maybe one scene where Naruto shows attraction to the woman that was used to trick Jiraiya. But is it enough to convince me of deep attraction when the main character's primary foible is acting in particular ways in front of other people to fulfill expectations of how he should act? Well, no.

Especially with all the other host of evidence that points to his attraction to women being a farce. At one point his reaction of "attraction" to a sexy jutsu is deliberately juxtaposed with Sakura's reaction to the sexy boy jutsu in the same chapter and yet the nosebleed that is supposed to signify attraction, the same one that Sakura has, is very obviously missing. Again, this is the same Kishimoto that was able to show Naruto "tingling" when he received the acknowledgement that he desperately wanted from Sasuke.

It simply doesn't add up. Even more so when you compare Naruto's indifference to Sakura's "attractiveness" with the fervor he uses to defend Sasuke's handsomeness.

But anyway, this post is only the tip of the iceberg. The gay or bi Naruto question has been discussed at length in the fandom. The most comprehensive posts I've seen about this are here, here, and here. You'll see the way SP deliberately added narusaku scenes to compensate for Naruto's behavior in the manga. i think the way the boruto manga approaches modernization is kind of funny because its somewhat anachronistic? like our "era" is represented as probably a mix of pre-1900s and the 80s, but konoha has pretty highpowered computers and internet.... and wireless headsets. i was actually curious how they would handle the fashion and i think the one that best represents it is himawari? because the girls in my era dress like variations of martial artists or traditional kunoichi with some personality-based adjustments, but himawari's outfits are literally kpop idol fits (someone online did a compilation of how himawari and sumire have references from blackpink and newjeans that are literally just traced over for their art). to me this makes sense because the boruto era is about extended peace -> consumerism and luxury. fashion inspiration would go from other ninja to celebrities (if kpop idols exist in the boruto world hah).

now for your question: i think boruto's looks are lazy. they give me the kind of fit a 9 year old would design for a naruto x sasuke child. nothing wrong with kids making OCs to enjoy their favourite media, but theyre not being paid to design and sell stories so...yeah. but purely fashionwise i dont think theyre bad. for sarada, i like the storytelling a bit more. going from entirely sakura's influence to a vague reference to itachi. im still hoping the glasses werent added just to make that stupid WHO IS THE MOM plot a thing. i know some people think her blue vortex look is inappropriate but shes wearing more clothing than my peers wore at that age and teens wear nowadays. i personally like her outfit.

though as usual i must say the best looks go to chocho.

I'm not mad about the other little changes. I actually like them. For example, I like that Sasuke and Sakura share a little moment here:

BUT I ALSO SEE THAT YOU, SP, JUST R.E.F.U.S.E TO HAVE SASUKE APPEAR AS EVEN A LITTLE BIT JELOUS OR PROTECTIVE.

You even transformed this scene up there from Sasuke trying to prevent flies making unwanted moves on HIS WIFE. To him wondering about her feelings of him not being longer with her (which is valid but is already discussed at the lake. This part should be about HIS feelings of thinking about his wife getting hit on). This does not sit well with me. And I don't know exactly how to explain why yet ....... I'll need more time to digest this episode

As much as I love having the novel adapted into anime, I think it felt rushed, I think it felt incomplete, I think it felt kind of cheap. The manga is better, the novel is best (because we get to read Sasuke's thoughts), but the anime...it's just kind of hollow.

Overall, we can see Studio Pierrot being anti-sasusaku again, just like the past 10 years.

If anyone could just “learn sensor jutsu” and “invent their own form of sensory jutsu”,everyone would have mastered sensor jutsu and use them daily.

There is a fucking reason why sensor type shinobi compared to ninjutsu and/or taijutsu type shinobi are the minority.

Do you see how Tenten doesn’t use sensor jutsu just like she does not use lava release? There is a reason why.

Do you see how Shizune doesn’t use sensor jutsu? Just like she does not use wooden type jutsu? There is a reason why not.

Do you see how Tsunade doesn’t use sensor jutsu? Despite Tsunade being smart and talented and extremely experienced? There is a reason why she doesn’t.

Rereading the Bleach manga has made me despise SP majority of the shipping wars in the Naruto and bleach fandom is in huge part because of SP. What I really despise about them is how they're biased towards other characters is that the expense of others. Recently with their treatment of Hinata and emitting scenes that were in the manga and the light novel family Day. Don't get me started on how they treated Orihime in the 2004 bleach anime how they basically turned her into a one-dimensional character when she has some of the most depth of any of the female characters in the manga she's a great character that was completely ruined.

I have serious criticisms of the one piece anime but at least one piece doesn't add fuel to the fire and The shipping wars yeah they may push some ships like Luffy and Nami but it's not at the expense of other characters like Naruto and bleach have done in their anime adoptions.

Honestly I don't blame them too much for Bleach, since in the early manga it was still possible, but it was obvious Orihime was going to be end game and Rukia had Renji as well, but they ended up fueling the shipping wars as the manga went on, but at least Rukia is a good character.

In Naruto however the scriptwriter was just completely bias towards NaruSaku despite how bad of character Sakura was. Even when the manga made it obvious NaruHina was end game and his crush on Sakura got greatly exaggerated in the anime as where in the manga it is like how Kishimoto intend you can tell it was never serious and that the rivalry with Sasuke was the driving force. Like come on the first chapter where Sakura shows up is literally about how Naruto competes with Sasuke, even when Naruto asks Sakura out it is always after Sasuke rejects her first as if he needs to be reminded to do so.

I 100% agree that their bias comes at the expense of others, like Hinata still got some spotlight in the original anime, but since Boruto started they have been more bias against her. I could give them a pass on the family novel and even not showing the Momoshiki fight since the show is about the next gen. However when they adapted that trash Retsuden they had no excuse for doing so other then bias cause it has nothing to do with the next gen characters. There is no defence or excuse for their actions it is entirely them just being bias towards Sakura and against Hinata. Like Sakura has little screen time, but the fact that they avoid giving Hinata any when they can especially any that shows her in a good light is just bad. Even the anniversary video lacked all of Hinata and Naruto's iconic scenes.

I tried my hand at giving Naruto and Sasuke alternate post 698 character designs. Specifically this is Naruto and Sasuke some time during their mid/late 20s, I drew these while thinking about my take on an alternate manga epilogue (711646011745058816). At first I was just thinking about hairstyles but then things spiraled out of control. Their Shippuden hairstyles are drawn there for reference, as controls.

While Shippuden was is serialization fan art of older Naruto pretty much always gave him longer hair which is why it's so ironic that the epilogue Kishimoto gave him shorter hair. I gave Naruto a mullet, because I thought it would be funny. It would be so in character for Naruto to just randomly shave his head, I don't even think it looks good, but it's just so him. I always rather liked Naruto's sage markings, and since Jiraya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru all had theirs be permanent, why not let Naruto keep his as well since he had a better handle on the technique than Jiraiya. Another haistyle I considered was one that included Jiraiya/Minato's long sideburns/forelocks but it was too hard to make the hairstyle distinctly Naruto, he just ended up looking like Minato. I like to imagine Naruto picking up fuuinjutsu both to help Kurama and the bijuu but also to connect with his mother's family. So here he is with his chest out and covered in seal tattoos. He only has one sleeve down on the Hashirama cell replacement right arm, this is also the hand which is covered by a black glove with a sun mark on the palm.

I started thinking about different Sasuke designs because his hair in Boruto bored me. I wasn't sure what to do with him at first since while his cockatoo hair is pretty stupid it is also ridiculously iconic. I had the idea for longer hair fairly early on, the main challenge was deciding if when longer his hair would be more spiky like Madara's or more sleek like Itachi and Mikoto's. I'm still not satisfied with how it looks but in the end I went halfway, not as spiky as Madara's hair but with a few spikes in there. The main ideas here were very long forelocks and a ponytail. I did consider keeping his duck butt back while only making the front longer but it ended up feeling a bit young for him. For clothes I wanted to combine the sleeveless coat from his susanoo with the sleeves from his initial Shippuden design. Sasuke here did take up Tsunade's offer for a replacement left arm so it is always covered and he wears a glove on that hand with a moon mark on the palm. I did consider an off the shoulder asymmetrical kimono like what traditional archers wear but I didn't feel like doing more research.

Kishimoto Masashi isn't a particularly good writer, however he is an excellent illustrator and phenomenal character designer. I'm not a good character designer so while looking up references for Sasuke and Naruto in the manga I started really noticing all the little facial differences Kishimoto gave them. Like how compared to Sasuke, Naruto's face and chin are rounder while Sasuke's are sharper or more refined. Their eye and eyebrow shapes are both very different and so is how they emote with them with Naruto opening his eyes wider or Sasuke having more relaxed eyebrows (well when he isn't scowling).
