my favorite female character: at least up to the season i watched i don't think there were super permanent female characters that would let me think of them as 'favourite' characters, however i liked most of them. bela and ruby stand out to me, though, and especially with bela i wish she could have returned in some way :'( cassie robinson was a great one episode character as well. dean really loved her ;~;

Orion - look, by my standards, "John makes omega!Sam wear a chastity belt" is nothing, but the absolute frustration that comes with that, with Sam being in heat and unable to touch himself and get even a hint of relief? It is absolutely sickening. I don't know how the author managed to capture that feeling so well, but my God, it hurts. (Wincest)

Shimmer and rot - Probably not fucked up enough for this list, but screw it, it's a good fic so I want to include it anyway. Wincest after deanjohn, and Sam steps over Dean's boundaries and triggers him.

the world was so easily won - I don't know if sick is exactly the right word for how this makes me feel, but it's adjacent. The way Dean is willingly just an object passed between Sam and John, that he's willing to make himself a pawn in their rivalry for just the slightest hint of attention? My God. It definitely makes me feel all kinds of ways and none of them are good. (Wincest and deanjohn)

Truth Hurts - Baby Dean tries to earn money for the family without knowing what he was signing up for. John doesn't realize what happened, and so he reopens the wounds. Really nice. (No ships)

then leave me the bones - ugh just. Dean who used to know why he was with John, and now he's just going through the motions. He swears his father is worth saving. He swears the sex used to be good. But right now, all he can see are the ugly parts, and he's killing himself for a man who will never thank him. Just trying to save John from getting into too much trouble and from his own slow decline. Maybe it's just because it's the second one I ever read, but I think this is the best deanjohn fic.

Matryoshka Dolls - okay I try not to recommend anything this long (24k) when I'm doing stuff like this, but I had to make an exception. This is the most complete deanjohn fic. It is so toxic, and what really hurts is how dean believes that the pain is what a good relationship is supposed to feel like. It's just. Exquisite. The most thorough examination of that dynamic. @goshen-applecrumbledore is very talented.

Wire Inside Me - I think this is the best wincest fic. Cis dude Sam is pregnant by Lucifer, and there's all the dread and pregnancy as body horror that implies, but this isn't really about that as much as it is about how it throws a wrench into the Sam and Dean relationship. Because, well, Dean is jealous of Lucifer. And what's really good at this is just how much the whole way Sam is hurting from it all and how terribly Sam copes.

don't say you need me when you leave and you leave again - I can't say a damn thing about this one without ruining it except that it's deanjohn, but it is truly sickening. If you really want it to be good, don't read the tags. Figure it out by yourself. The way the reader has to slowly catch on, and the way Dean won't confront what he definitely already knows deep down, are just so good.

7 - I mean. Come on. I think Lucifer rapes Sam's corpse before resurrecting him and Sam has to deal with the emotional effects of that is the definition of fucked up. Oh and there's good Sam and Jack and Sastiel as well.

cradle of smoke - If you only read one of these, make it this one. Dean pushing himself to give his brother what he needs. It's so claustrophobic in the best ways, and the ending is chilling. I love Dean forcing himself to do what needs to be done until eventually he wants it, and I love the utter atomsphere of dread and inevitability. (Wincest with past samjohn)

until heaven and hell are satisfied - This. This. This. Pregnancy as body horror to the highest degree. Dean was raped and impregnated by a demon and the child is killing him from the inside out. An absolutely flaying fic. Gut wrenching. Dean is not just being literally killed by it, it is also robbing all his sanity. (No ships, but great Sam & Dean fic)

Shattered - A wincest fuck or die that really deeply acknowledges the wild thing about fuck or die — it creates a scenario where both participants in sex are raped. Neither of them want this, but they have no choice, and nothing will ever be the same. Absolutely sickening. Really, really, really good. Highly recommend.

Hard to Love - impressively, the most fucked up fic on this list has no non-con. As per the tags, it's just deanjohn with past destiel and samifer, but I'd say it's sastiel and wincest as well. Sure, the last two aren't having sex, but they sure have their own fucked up dynamics that go well beyond platonic. The basic summary is that Amara brought back John instead of Mary. Saying more than that would spoil it. But Dean, John, Sam and Castiel are all tied up in their own terrible knots, especially Sam, and none of them can deal with their relationships with each other, and in my opinion it is the best SPN fic. It is deeply fucked up from beginning to end and masterfully written.

There's a lot of wincest and deanjohn here and I know you don't really fuck with that (although granted I realized that *after* I wrote all of this. I was like "I know he's commented on my fics, so he prooooobably is an incest person?" which is kind of silly when I write more gen than anything else), but for what it's worth, I'm an aro who tends to like ships for their toxicity and horror. So. It's not like any of these are "incest is good" fics.

would you ever consider writing wincestiel again? because i ship it the same way you do (wincest + castiel) and it's so hard to find that dynamic, even though it's objectively the hottest (and most canon compliant, cough)

Man, I don't know! There are only a veeeeery few places I find that version (our version) (best version) particularly possible. I also really hate writing threesomes, lol. Too many legs flailing around.

But you're right, it's very very hard to find anyone who's interested. I mean, most people are either firm on wincest or destiel, and of those people it feels like most of them are very annoyingly rigid and downright hostile to other possibilities. I mean, a lot of destiel people truly are in their own universe, so I get why they just shed Sam as an inconvenience -- and they are allowed, so... may they have fun with it I guess -- and a lot of wincest people seem like they've been fandom poisoned so even the idea of Cas/Dean or even Dean being queer in any way outside of Sam-sexual is a 5-alarm threat. [nb, I have zero interest in sastiel -- I can see how one would build out chemistry there if one were inclined, but I don't see it in the show, so this is very much a relationship I think about with Dean as the center.]

But if you're free of both of those concerns, like -- man! Pining!Cas is very much a possibility granted by the text, as is queer!Dean, and even if wincest is canon (at least in the emotionally incestuous gencest place) you can make space for these recombinations to occur and for them to feel entirely possible within canon characterizations and canon moments. It's just... people would have to want to, and of course there's the rub.

For me, Sam's the biggest obstacle to wincestiel. Sometimes because of jealousy -- I think I wrote about this recently...? Oh yeah, this. More often because I think he's very aware of the actual stakes and scenario and is too kind to give false hope. Dean, too, although he may not articulate it that way. There are also some times that Cas wouldn't go for it, because -- much like Benny -- he actually does respect the wincest uber alles thing that Sam and Dean have going on. He knows what the hierarchy is, here.

So, all that said: the most likely way for me to write it would probably be still separated out into twosomes, e.g. Sam knows that Cas and Dean fucked in the past and is sort of okay with it, but also knows that he 'won' and doesn't want to rub it in Cas's face even though Cas is sitting silent in their library waiting for Dean to get back; or, it's early s9 and Sam's full of Gadreel and Dean's so goddamn guilty and scared and human!Cas is nervy and happy to see him and they fall into bed, one way or another, but Dean's got to get back to Sam and Cas knows that, and watches him go. etc.

I am never interested in 'equal' OT3s or perfect polyamory, unforch. I always need someone to be left wanting. Cas, with that crack in his chassis, is a very good candidate. Sorry, Cas.

F - What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom?

Do you mean active participation in., or from inception? Because I don't really consider myself as having left very many fandoms even if my participation in them faltered and lay fallow for a while. For active participation, Supernatural is probably the longest I've been continuously a part of, which is funny since it's the one I resisted getting into the most. From inception, though, probably Animorphs.

I - Has Tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why?

Tumblr actually made me dislike a fandom before I was even in it to the point that I refused to even watch the series for ten years before a crossover fanfic piqued my interest in the characters enough to go looking for more and eventually reading fanfic for it without the crossover element, and even then I resisted actually getting into the fandom until I started getting plot bunnies I couldn't ignore anymore and now I've been in the Supernatural fandom for seven years and counting. Go figure.

L - Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves. (Characters you’re neutral about are fair game, as are characters you merely dislike. Characters that you absolutely loathe with the fire of ten thousand suns are exempt, as there is no point in giving yourself an aneurysm over a character that you hate.)

Lucifer had the potential to be an amazing, complex character full of head-twisting theological implications of free will and the nature of angels, the incredible and infuriatingly human potential to grow beyond the limits of what he was created to be, and he deserved better than to be Bucklemming's yoyo.

Gah! Every time someone asks me to talk about some unspecified "something", even with the codifier of "fan-related", my mind goes blank. I have no idea. I'm tired and need more sleep than I get and I could really use a hug. One of the best hugs I ever got was from Jared Padalecki at JAXCon in December of 2018. It was warm and solid and felt like hugging a flannel-wrapped tree, and I'm amazed my eyes were actually open in the photo op. Second to that was also the hug I got from Misha Collins that same weekend during an earlier op. Something about him, his presence, was just so incredibly calming that I felt like I had been dropped into a liminal space where a full thirty-minute meditation was compressed into one and a half seconds, and it left me feeling so relaxed for the whole rest of the day. Hugs are really nice, and those two in particular had to have hugged a LOT of people just that weekend alone, but it still felt special and briefly connecting. Good memories, and I'm glad all of us were in the right places within ourselves to make those memories. (I rather doubt I stand out in their memories at all, or at least I hope I don't, I was an awkward bean that weekend and I just hope I'm part of the more positive background blur in their minds.)

i mean in the end i think sastiel is your best choice. as i have laid out, sam really struggles with relating to men, so he just doesn't have enough relationships of any kind with men to really make something of. he has flirtatious moments with some one off dudes, which are great in terms of reading queerness onto sam but not in terms of actual shipping, and of course there's sambrady, but that's just like samjess: you have to invent it, which i'm not into. like sastiel is your best choice, unless you want to literally pick a male character from canon and ship them. i think sam/max banes would have legs. i know at least one person who ships sambenny and i could maybe get into that. etc. etc.

Due to my schedules, rl stuff, some of the arcs that didn't vibe with me, my availability to find a place to watch...the rollercoaster I was used to with this fandom was more me binging it in a weekend to going months to over a year without watching it. I still haven't watched the last season(but with a fandom this big it's pretty impossible not be spoiled so I more or less know what happened) BUT oh great one I ask of thee for more information if you have it...other than being busy and whatnot, I'm not really one to keep up with the actors as well. So could you also maybe do a summary of all the stans? I'im seeing terms I haven't seen before. Who is Kelios(sp?)? Hellions?? probably messed it up but like...I guess what are the name of each legion? Who do they have alliance towards? What was their desires? Que paso?!?!?!?

Hi there! 'Some of the arcs that didn't vibe with me' me emotionally quitting Supernatural in Season 7 after they killed Castiel 😂 Anyway I totally get it, I went through the same culture shock mid-last year when I got back into SPN and tried to find where fandom was at! There's really a LOT of lore and content after 15 years though so I'll just do the broad brushstrokes based on my impressions and personal stereotypes PLEASE remember this is oversimplifying groups and individuals to tendencies and I'm very biased! Also important that there are sub-factions within sub-factions - again, I'm simplifying here!

I've also linked to the 'Super-wiki' in terms of some definitions because the Super-wiki has pages for them where the Fandom-wiki does not. Great introduction actually - only in the Supernatural fandom. There are two Supernatural wikis. One, through curation and twitter activity, supports BiBro/Wincest factions and does not support Destiel users. One is more neutral or Destiel-friendly (I don't know that the Fandom wiki has a personality/social media presence per se). You cannot make this up. There is a factional war... within use of fandom wikis.

Destiel faction

People who primarily ship Dean/Cas, love Castiel and (often, although not always) Jack, and the 'found family' of Supernatural as well as the brothers, and like the post s3 seasons too. Hated 15.19 and 15.20 for killing Dean and ignoring the other characters/narrative arc of the show. Nicknamed 'Destihellers' by the Wincest faction as a derogatory term, 'reclaimed' and shortened as 'Hellers', a nickname they use affectionately to describe each other. See more info on nicknames here.

Sometimes also ship ‘Cockles’ (the ship between Misha Collins and Jensen Ackles) although generally speaking they're more respectful of the wives of the actors than J2 shippers, who are notoriously responsible for... a vast series of insane-fan misdemeanours. Historically most were also good at keeping RPF to themselves and not harassing celebrities with it directly, although recently, particularly with younger twitter fans, that has not been the case.

Sub-factions:

The ‘Desticule’ or ‘Destiel tumblr’ - general grouping of Destiel-shipping tumblr users around 20-30 years old, usually LGBT+, most who came back to the show post-15.18 after leaving it for various reasons including getting sick of the queerbaiting. Funniest bitches alive etc. and responsible for the best text posts you’ve ever seen. Can also start stupid discourse and in-group drama when they’re bored.

'POLOL' - People of Lots of Letters, a discord group (of tumblr and twitter users) that ran on the assumption Andrew Dabb was playing a hugely intricate game of 3D chess to do with gnostic symbolism among other things, and would make Destiel canon. Have since had their own factional sub-wars and fallen apart a bit. Some of their meta was and is good and interesting! Some of it was wildly off the mark. Now generally insist that Dabb/the writers were all pushing for Destiel canon and the network is entirely to blame.

Twitter fans (TikTok edition) - younger fans around 18 and younger who (FOR REASONS BEYOND ME) started watching the show around 2018-2020. Definition of 'stans'. Tend to be very loud and aggressive on twitter when Events Happen, which like. I do get, because they've grown up in a completely different media environment and this kind of Dinosaur Politicking around LGBT+ issues is beyond them. Fancam central. Anyway stream #CASTIEL for clear skin!

Twitter fans (AO3 edition) - older fans around 30+ who kept going with the show but either don't have a large tumblr presence or just prefer twitter. A lot of fic writers, GISH-ers, and BNFs in this group. Some of them are very cool and reasonable in their opinions, some of them act like the younger stans. Some of them too accepting of what happened wrt 15.19-20 in my opinion, because, in contrast to the younger twitter stans, they grew up expecting Destiel to NEVER be canon or respected. 'Can't believe we got this far' etc.

Multiship faction

Multishippers or shippers of things not as large as the two main behemoths . Sub-factions based on shipping, e.g. Megstiel and Sastiel. I don't think these groups are very large though, and seem to have very little influence in the Discourse.

Wincest faction

LARGE overlap with the 'BiBro' faction and their opinions, which I'll get to. Ship Sam and Dean romantically. Often pretend to be BiBros on places like twitter and reddit in order for outside groups to take their opinions more seriously. 'Wincesties' etc. are derogatory nicknames given by the Destiel faction.

Sub-factions:

Multiship fans - ship Sam and Dean but respect Castiel/the 'found family'. Politically overlap with the faction of multishippers, I think. I don't have a lot of insight on this group of people honestly, but I know they exist.

Bronlies - the typical BiBro and 'Wincest' shippers most people think of, twitter user 'Kelios' is one of the would-be ringleaders of this faction - typically tend to be older white midwestern women. Historically have been pretty nasty on twitter (leading to Robert Berens, writer who made Destiel canon, occasionally subtweeting Kelios). Also tend to ship 'J2' - and take it very seriously as a legitimate thing that is really real. This is called 'tinhatting'.

BiBro faction

People who think the show should JUST be about the brothers, love Supernatural s1-3 and everything after it should have been just like Supernatural s1-3. Hate Castiel, Jack, and the 'found family'. Largely loved 15.20. Go to literally any comments section on any Supernatural article and You Will Find Them complaining about how the show should just be about the Brothers. Tend to be older, straighter, and more conservative/Republican (and male) fans. (I am aware that the definition of 'BiBro' used to refer to people who just liked the brothers but there's no definitional difference now in the discourse.) The Wincest and BiBro faction are generally much more wealthy than the Destiel faction (they being younger and more diverse/queer/left-leaning in general) and would be the biggest revenue generators at conventions etc.

Sub-factions:

Reddit bros - literally anyone who visits r/supernatural. Well, that's not fair - there are people who post reasonable opinions on there, but it's pretty rare and they get downvoted a lot. Like to talk about 'toxic Destiel fans' 'ruining the show' and how Dean is a straight man who is straight and could never possibly be gay. Might even think the confession was platonic despite all evidence to the contrary. I'm Not Homophobic I Have Gay Friends, But No Gays on MY Show!

Old Guard - group of older fans who overlap strongly with the Wincest faction, but might not necessarily ship Wincest.

GA faction

'General Audience' - These are the group of audience members that aren't 'online' so to speak; most watch the show on TV as a Casual Viewing Experience (are therefore also sometimes referred to as 'casuals'. Mostly their opinions tend towards BiBros, but they have a vast range of baffling views thanks to being Not Online and usually Not caring about Supernatural that much or thinking that deeply about it.

Sub-factions:

People who simply watch Supernatural on TV and then don't think about it very much after that.

I said they weren't 'online' but that's not entirely true; I'd probably classify people on Supernatural Facebook Groups as GA, along with friends of friends who post statuses about how 15.20 was a neat finale that wrapped up the series.

Conclusion

Supernatural is famously the show that appeals to both Republicans and Democrats, literally All Orientations, so there's a WIDE range of factions. However, most warring online boils down to Destiel vs. Wincest/BiBro - the war that started in Season 4 and has simply never ended. In terms of the 'actors' and their stans, in general, Wincest/BiBro fans love Jared, like Jensen, and dislike Misha. Destiel fans love Misha, like Jensen, and dislike Jared. Of course as with everything, there are variations and this is just a generalisation. But that's the summary of it, from my perspective!

This didn't even get into Sam girls, Dean girls and Cas girls. God. Anyway.

I’m a broken record, I know, but I don’t care. I feel the need to go into this further, so I will.

I understand that the show decided to go with one-sided Destiel, I do (I disagree with people who say that Castiel’s declaration was platonic), but I can’t stop thinking about what little sense it makes.

I always assumed that neither Sastiel, Destiel, or Wincest would be made openly romantically canon, so I never really gave a lot of serious thought to whether or not Sastiel made more sense than Destiel. I always felt that it did, though in a largely indifferent way, ever since it became my OTP, but my main attitude towards Destiel was that I wished Destielers would stop bothering us, and that Dean was abusive towards Castiel, so I didn’t understand why people would ship it. I didn’t spend much time comparing the two in my head unless Destielers were harassing us. 

Now, however, after Castiel’s speech in which he gushed about how caring and amazing Dean is, I can’t stop thinking about how much more sense Sastiel makes, and how Castiel’s speech would feel far more appropriate if it was aimed at Sam. I don’t understand how Castiel can say that Dean is the most caring man he knows, when Dean spends a lot of time being aggressive and cruel towards him, not bothering to try to understand where he’s coming from, whereas Sam has always done so. They rarely fight, and Sam never levies personal attacks in Castiel’s direction. He’s gentle with Cas. He raised Jack after Castiel died, doing his best to protect Jack from Dean’s abuse(which was so extreme that on his second day of life Jack was self harming). Castiel finds Sam’s hair beautiful, and probably shared a bed with Sam for a while. 

So how, how can all those things be true, and yet the show say that Castiel fell in love with Dean instead of Sam? I understand that we don’t always get to choose who we love, and that we definitely make bad choices where love is concerned. But it wasn’t framed as such. I genuinely think that the only reason the show went with unrequited Destiel was pure fan service. I don’t think it made sense. And I truly think that Sastiel did. I have plenty of ships where I understand that that ship is unrealistic and wouldn’t make sense in the context of the universe it’s based in. But Supernatural has driven me to take Sastiel seriously, and I seriously think that Sastiel should have happened. I understand that far fewer people in the fandom see it, but that shouldn’t matter. What should matter is the story being told. And the story that was told, right up until 15x18, was of a boy with demon blood and an angel slowly falling in love, especially in seasons 13-15. 

The story deserved better.

AND remember when Cas bought a ring pop for Jack and Sam. And sam thought it would be a funny idea to propose to cas with said ring pop and cas took it seriously even tho sam was joking but was lowkey highkey hoping it was real and so sam bought a real ring to propose to cas with but PLOT TWIST cas bought a ring to propose with sam. and so they got married with gabriel as the priest, crowley as the best man for sam, and rowena is the bridesmaid for sam and charlie is recording the whole thing. sam and cas get married happily ever after. man why did they blacklist that episode, its so sad (dean killed offscreen idk(Sastiel is THAT ship))

Sam is not Cas' "best friend ever". Dean is his best friend. That's canon. Sam isn't this "weird girl woke ally " the fandom claims him to be. Sastiel shippers boggle my mind because Cas really only started caring about Sam for Dean's sake. I can't understand how they see Dean & Castiel's relationship and completely ignore it? Is it just because they think Jared is hot or something but don't want to ship w*ncest? I'll never get it. Anyway that's my unpopular(?) Sam/Cas opinions. I feel like half the ppl who say stuff like that in this fandom don't even watch the show.

hmmm, well. i feel like sometimes the show itself tries to wrangle in cas as 'sam AND dean's best friend' in an effort to no homo destiel, but i mean. you ARE right, cas and dean are undeniably the closest. i still choose the fanon interpretation that sam and cas are weirdgirls who bond over being freaks :’) i also did think their season 9 bonding was very sweet. so like... in my HEAD they’re besties.  i mean the 'woke' or 'not woke' interpretation is definitely a fanon thing regardless of which side you take, but i prefer that sam is well-meaning and maybe a bit snooty about using correct terms, but ultimately not as woke as he thinks himself to be. just for the extra spice (tm) SASTIELS, YOU FASCINATE ME..... i have never once seen you on my dash but i find the concept deeply compelling. in the way that i see absolutely NO romantic tension between sam and cas and have a hard time even, like, imagining it. but i’m glad we’re all having fun here. send me controversial or unpopular opinions and I’ll tell you if I agree or disagree
