After more than 2 years, I'm back. Rumors of this story's death have been only mildly exaggerated. One more chapter to go, and this time I promise to try to have it finished before the universe suffers a heat death.
Thanks so much to everyone who kept reading and posting comments. I never stopped thinking about this story, and It was a comment left on my other WIP that made me dig myself out of my hole, sit down, and bang on the keyboard for a while.

Fandom: Star Trek, Star Trek: The Original Series Characters: Spock (Star Trek), Amanda Grayson, Sarek (Star Trek) Additional Tags: Meditation, Kolinahr (Star Trek), Planet Vulcan (Star Trek), Desert, Emotionally Hurt Spock (Star Trek), Emotional Hurt, Guilt, Emotionally Repressed, (Spock and Sarek imo), Spock has a kind of flashback to journey to babel, Expectations
Perhaps Sarek had expected him to begin Kolinahr sooner than he had chosen to. No matter. Sarek expects many things.
Spock has returned to Vulcan and is staying with his parents: a less-than-ideal scenario. He wrestles with their expectations for him and his behaviour, taking to meditating and traversing the desert to calm his mind and process his thoughts. Oh, and throughout all this, he's still in love with Jim.

Why is my fic taking so long to write; an explanation-
Me: Yeah I'm writing an exploration of Saavik's grief post-TWOK
The entire ensemble cast of Star Trek: Hey, what about us?
Me: Oh alright, get in losers, we're going to Spock's funeral

(Star Trek) Meet Me on Sunday - TomFooleryPrime
"Will you permit me to meld with you?"
Her face twisted in a series of odd looks. "Meld? Do you mean… is that some kind of euphemism for… you know…"
I have been down a very deep Star Trek fanfic rabbit hole lately! There must be tons of commentary on Spirk fanfics already so here's a (slightly more) rare pair that I enjoyed reading - Sarek/Amanda. This fic is absolutely adorable. Very cute and fluffy, not a whole lot of drama, and the characterizations are absolutely on point. Highly recommend if you're in the mood for a feel-good, cozy, slightly nerdy, not smutty romance and find Vulcans as appealing as I do :)
Summary: Sarek's first month as science attaché to the Vulcan consulate on Earth is a disaster, causing him to question his future as a diplomat. When he inadvertently offends a young schoolteacher, he sets in motion a chain of events that will shape the rest of his life… and hers.

-> fanfiction : to lay away all , the head , the feet , the hands , all
It's been 26 years since the failure of UNAMIR, since Agent Winona Kirk's cell was decimated and the children there were captured - most of which they spent repairing things next-over in Monrovia. From war to war, but life has eased these days. Jim lives on a farm in Iowa by himself. He grows corn and builds robots to keep himself company. His best friend is his doctor and there's probably a problem somewhere in there. He can't be arsed to give a shit. And then a space-ship obliterates his barn to smithereens. Did we mention the space-ship part? Right. So, Spock's an alien. So there's that.
Rating E / NC - 17 | Content warnings for : war , genocide , slavery , abuse , racism/xenophobia | quietdown as Jim Kirk and Sarek . LilliputianDuckling as Spock and Leonard McCoy .

Vulcan Family Tension
Casey stood outside her childhood home on Vulcan, her heart racing as she looked up at the familiar structure. Now she was here, with her half-brother Spock, to visit their father Sarek and his human wife, Amanda.
As they approached the door, Casey could feel her nerves getting the best of her. She was significantly more human than Spock, and the thought of facing her Vulcan family made her feel like an outsider.
But she took a deep breath and followed Spock inside.
Sarek and Amanda were waiting for them in the living room. Amanda was the first to stand up and embrace them both, her warm smile immediately putting Casey at ease. Sarek, on the other hand, simply nodded in their direction before taking a seat.
Casey and Spock took their seats as well, and Amanda began making small talk. But Casey couldn't help but notice the tension in the room.
She knew that her father had never fully accepted her because of her human emotions, and she could feel his disapproval even now.
After a few moments of awkward silence, Sarek spoke up. "I understand that you have both been busy with your duties in Starfleet," he said, his tone stiff.
"Yes, Father," Spock replied. "We have both been working diligently."
Casey could feel Sarek's eyes on her, but she refused to look up. She didn't want to see the disappointment there.
"I must say, Casey, I am surprised that you have chosen to pursue a career in Starfleet," Sarek said after a moment. "It seems an odd choice for someone who is so... emotional."
Casey's jaw clenched. She knew what he was implying. "You're wrong, Father," she said firmly. "My emotions make me a better officer. They allow me to connect with people, to understand their motivations and their fears. And that makes me a better leader."
There was a moment of stunned silence, and Casey could see the surprise on Sarek's face. It was rare for anyone to challenge him, especially a half-human like Casey.
But then Amanda spoke up, her voice gentle. "Casey is right, Sarek. Her emotions are a strength, not a weakness. And her dedication to Starfleet is admirable."
Sarek was silent for a long moment, and Casey could feel her heart pounding in her chest. But then he nodded. "Perhaps you are right," he said at last. "I will have to reconsider my opinions on the matter."
It wasn't exactly an apology, but it was the closest thing Casey had ever received from her father. And for her, it was enough.
As the conversation moved on to more neutral topics, Casey found herself relaxing. Maybe her family would never fully understand her, but she knew now that they respected her. And for Casey, that was a victory in itself.
After a few hours of catching up, Spock and Casey said their goodbyes and headed out into the cool evening air. As they walked away from the house, Casey turned to her brother.
"That was... intense," she said with a small smile.
Spock nodded. "Indeed. But I am glad that Father was able to see the value in your emotions."
Casey grinned. "Yeah, me too. Maybe he'll even be proud of me someday."
Spock raised an eyebrow. "I would not go that far, Casey."
She laughed, feeling more like herself than she had in a long time.

me: so apparently all vulcans get mind melded as children and have this weird marriage or death ceremony when their mating season hits and we see this in amok time when spock reveals he has a “wife”?? that he’s like legally bonded to??? and he has to go to vulcan or he’s gonna die of horniness or some shit????
my poor father: ..right
me: but then how did amanda and sarek happen??? surely sarek was vulcan engaged too??? did he ditch it to elope with his girlfriend? if he did why does fanfiction always make out that sarek is really ashamed of spock for ditching his vulcan engagement when he did the same thing! why are vulcans even getting engaged at like eight? thats weird right dad? i just know the divorce rate on vulcan is through the roof.
my poor father: yeah that sounds rough for spock. so did you want milk in your tea or….?

I love that newer star trek series are exploring Spock's past, I do- I love Micheal and Spock, I love snw hinting at Sybok, I love them exploring Amanda and Sarek and their relationship with Spock- I love all that!
But!
I wish they'd also explore Kirk's backstory a bit more?? Because it's incredibly complex and it shapes his character in so many ways??
James Tiberius Kirk is a famine survivor, he spent his teenage years on a colony called Tarsus IV during a food crisis, where the governor, Kodos, believed in eugenics and tried to save a portion of his colony by killing the four thousand colonists he deemed least desirable or able to survive. He witnessed their execution at 15 years old.
And even in TOS we CAN see episodes where he struggles with survivor's guilt, and a lot of it! I think paramount is really missing an opportunity to explore that aspect of Kirk, because it's so damn important to so many people that he is a famine survivor!
And I've seen fanfiction handle his past so SO well, which makes me think that if a bunch of people writing on ao3 can do a perfect job of explaining in a story how that affects his life, so can the writers of snw or whatever star trek series may come that will finally touch the subject of Tarsus
Thank you for reading my little rant about Kirk's past<3

Scene from Journey To Babel (1968): Dr. McCoy of Star Trek looks over his sickbay where Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, and Ambassador Sarek are all occupying beds, Sarek with Amanda at his side. writing is:
googling the S'chn T'gai lineage
getting pissed because i can't find a Vulcan word for mistress.
arguing with myself about the fact that Vulcans would/wouldn't have a need for this word (neither side of me won).
staring at @jowhittaker's Amanda Grayson gifs, cause Amanda Grayson. (They're all in the queue).

So maybe. Just maybe. I've started writing a fanfic of this just a little.
WE'RE STILL IN CHAPTER 1 DRAFTS but I have made Amanda Grayson into a high school language arts teacher with a nerdy love of Earth culture and chalkboards and British literature as well as that One Lady who writes way too many emails trying to make shit happen and I love her. She just wants a Vulcan Ambassador to help her Vulcan literature unit be more holistic and authentic dammit!
(And Sarek will be the unlucky (lucky) ambassador to get assigned to her class)
.
.
.
.
.
(terrible news, I absolutely forgot I already schemed most of this in my original post this is devastating, apparently I have one covert brain cell and it remembers all my ideas but I don't)
Anyway, we are definitely playing into Amanda fell first, Sarek fell harder. Because it cannot be any other way.
To make up for my crimes, here's the unedited first two paragraphs!
"Amanda Grayson didn’t believe in the logical fallacy of spirituality. The universe was too vast. Too random. She preferred the factual motivation of helping her students become better humans. Molding them was the one certainty that felt like it could answer her hopes and prayers for the future.
But if she was forced to have superstitions, it would be about the chalk. And with the way it squealed against her board that morning, it was not going to be a good day. "
in this Star Trek Renaissance, I demand a silly little romcom where Amanda Grayson, a wonderful but definitely still normal human woman, completely derails the perfectly logical life of an up-and-coming ambassador Sarek.
Good boy Sarek seeing this kind English teacher introduced her class to the visiting Vulcan ambassadors, going the extra mile to learn Vulcan to write it on a strange, old-school chalkboard.
Making excuses to come back during his time there, that the Vulcan students in her class deserve more Vulcan influence than she could offer.
Lingering for her lessons on Alice in Wonderland, horrified by the absurdity of the story but unable to stop listening.
Near the end of his trip, startling himself by taking her hand and then, on impulse, insisting they should be married. And she says maybe a date first.
*chef's kiss*
