ok I saw the reblog of your star trek books post about someone asking for recs someday, but I’m impatient and have decided I am not gonna wait and that I will send the recs ask MYSELF dammit!!

I feel like i’ve never gotten into the books because I’m worried they will be bad, so if you have any TOS/DS9 book recs I would LOVE to hear them — I have consumed all Star Trek content made up until this point and am so so desperate for new material

for TOS i would say the best ones are:

Killing Time by Della Van Hise — famously gay and for good reason, it’s just blatantly romantic spirk content. it’s all about how they are meant to be together in every alternate universe and that they are soulmates <3

Spock’s World by Diane Duane — bones, kirk, and spock go to vulcan because the vulcans are considering leaving the federation. really great plot and super accessible characterization for the main three!

Vulcan’s Forge by Susan Shwartz — follows two plots- young spock figuring out that he wants to join star fleet, and older spock dealing with kirk’s death and trying to move on. it’s really not as sad as it sounds and it adds so much to spock’s character imo.

id honestly also recommend the novelizations of the movies, they definitely add a lot of new content

DS9 is harder cause i love soooo many of these but some of the best are:

Hollow Men by Una McCormack — kind of a sequel to the episode ‘in the pale moonlight’, garak and sisko go on a trip to earth to deal with dominion war stuff (and everyone else has shenanigans on the station)

The 34th Rule by Armin Shimerman — basically quark whump, him and rom are sort of kicked off the station and go to a prison camp and the rest of the characters have conflicting feelings about this (it’s a bit overdramatic at times but i love quark-centric stories so 🤷)

Fallen Heroes by Dafydd ab Hugh — this one is pretty crazy, quark and odo suddenly travel 3 days into the future and find the entire station is dead, like Everyone died, and they have to figure out what happened and fix it (i love quodo and there’s a scene where quark vacuums odo up, need i say more)

Saratoga by Michael jan Friedman — sisko is meeting with the other survivors from the ship jennifer died on. there’s sabotage, intrigue, betrayal and such and then the b plot is that odo has to pretend to be quark. so basically an average ds9 episode lol

there are definitely a lot more good ones but it depends on what characters you like and what kinds of stories you’re looking for ya know? please please message me if you want to talk ab it more!!!!

BOOK REVIEW: ‘An Echo in the Bone’ by Diana Gabaldon

Content warning: Death, war, a character contemplates suicide, disease, murder, kidnapping

All right, I’ll try to be brief in this review because while I have a lot of thoughts, I’m sure that if you’re this deep into Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series, you’re probably already intent on finishing. And conversely, if you’re not into the series, you probably don’t want to read a lengthy review on the penultimate book. (As of this writing.)

“An Echo in the Bone” picks up shortly after where “A Breath of Snow and Ashes” ends. Roger and Brianna are in 1980 and reading the letters that Jamie and Claire sent across time. And Claire and Jamie are dealing with the American Revolutionary War. Fun stuff!

Roger continues to be the WORST. Dude literally complains about having to take care of his own children and that his wife has a nontraditional job while he’s unemployed. Oh, and he’s angsty about her being Catholic, which HE KNEW GOING IN.

Dudes like Roger are what I call the “Good enough dudes who slowly suck the life out of you through their selfishness and general shortsightedness.” At least the truly wicked people do us the favor of showing themselves for what they are immediately so we can avoid them.

He’s supposed to be a romantic hero and someone we can cheer for. And yet, he’s still an asshole. We deserve better, especially in our fiction. (And in real life too.)

I digress.

Claire and Jamie encounter historical figures and try to ensure that the revolution happens. Jamie wants to get his printing press in Scotland so he can better contribute to the effort.

Historical shenanigans ensue because this is Outlander and nothing is straightforward. Jamie and Claire are involved in several battles including Ticonderoga and Saratoga.

“An Echo in the Bone” is a swifter and quicker book than the others in the series. And there’s a bunch of medical mayhem and general grossness. But it WORKS! Claire is at her best when she’s doing surgical things.

And like I said in the warning at the top, there’s a brief section where a character contemplates suicide and it’s rather detailed. If you’re a sensitive reader, please be careful. And please know that there are resources out there if you’re struggling. You’re not alone. There is help.

Thankfully the character in question stays alive – there’s a lot more story to be had.

“An Echo in the Bone” ends on a cliffhanger of sorts. Not all the plot threads are fully resolved, but that’s where the next book comes in. I’m looking forward to reading it.

It’s been a hectic past few weeks of travel and speaking. Two weeks ago I was in Chicago, last weekend Lisa and I were in Toronto presenting our Strong Body-Strong Mind workshop, and this weekend I’m heading to Saratoga Springs, NY to present my Coaching Competency workshop.

Annnnnd, the next few weekends after that I’m pumped because I get to sit down, relax, take a seat, and be a student myself.

John Rusin and Christian Thibaudeau will be in Boston (10/7-8) presenting their Advanced Performance Coaching & Programming Strategies workshop. Then, on the weekend of 10/15 I’ll head out to Springfield, MA for the Clinical Athlete Workshop with Dr. Quinn Henoch of Juggernaut Systems who will be presenting alongside Matthew Ibrahim and Zak Gabor.

Maybe I’ll see some of you there?
