I want to emphasize that I used a painting called Beauty Revealed by Sarah Goodridge, and that I didn't crop it. Girl did a whole-ass portrait of her ta-tas and nothing more about 200years ago 😂

Sarah Goodridge’s Beauty Revealed, 1828
These pale breasts encircled by a swirl of cloth, painted on a thin plate of ivory 2.6 inches high and 3.1 inches long, belonged to the woman who painted them: an accomplished miniaturist named Sarah Goodridge (b. 1788). Adding to the intrigue is the fact that Goodridge sent this particular miniature (enclosed in a leather case that could be closed with two clasps) to the recently widowed United States senator Daniel Webster in 1828.

Quote
“Whether Webster had any sexual involvement with [Goodridge] cannot be proved one way or the other,’ Webster’s biographer Robert Remini says cautiously, before adding: ‘although the fact that she sent him a self-portrait with her breasts exposed raises suspicions.’ ¶ But Beauty Revealed is not a ‘self-portrait with the [Goodridge’s] breasts exposed’; it’s a self-portrait exclusively of her breasts.

This sent me down a rabbit hole, in which I learned that Sarah Goodridge painted this miniature, generally understood to be a self-portrait, for none other than Daniel Webster. Yes, famous nineteenth-century statesman Daniel Webster. Daniel Webster from "The Devil and Daniel Webster" Daniel Webster.
An absolutely fascinating and very readable exploration of Sarah Goodridge, her career, and this and other self-portraits, written by historian Chris Packard, is here: "Self-Fashioning in Sarah Goodridge’s Self-Portraits."
