A wound is open, unresolved, a coming apart, a shock, its meaning indeterminate; a scar or disfigurement, on the other hand, stands at a greater temporal distance from the original inflic- tion. Wounds suffered in battle left the soldier in an abject, unresolved position in relation to the world, his body literally opened, his life and death dependent on the course of healing or decline his wounds would take; scars, on the other hand, were corporal evidence of healing as well as damage—a memorializing faultline on the body that reminded the veteran of the “before” and “after” that his life had taken upon the injury he suffered. Like settled or closed narratives, scars healed over ruptures and reintegrated the body back to its state of wholeness—but not entirely; despite traces of healing, and the myths that accrued around scars, the vestiges of an originary violence itself remained.

I started the month strong by cracking, buying the last two books, and finishing Sierra Simone's Thornchapel series (here are my final thoughts), and then mostly spent the rest of the month on ARCs (see below) and a pretty diverse array of romances. All in all a great month!

Bed Me, Baron by Felicity Niven (releases September 7th)

I haven't had this much fun reading a historical romance in a long time. It's one of those romances that start off relatively light and frivolous (and there's an immediate "teach me" moment), but by the end, it really packs an emotional punch. For my full analysis on friends-to-lovers and the daddy of it all, here's my review.

Full Moon Over Freedom by Angelina M. Lopez (releases September 5th)

I'm not one to read romances with magic in them, but Angelina wrote wrote this deeply cultural and spiritual take on magic and superstition and intertwined it with the romance masterfully. Here's my full review.

The Duke Gets Desperate by Diana Quincy (releases September 26th)

This book felt particularly special to me because the heroine is a first-generation immigrant and retains both her family's Palestinian culture and that classic can-do American spirit. The cultural rep as well as the feminist legal themes are compelling reasons for why we should be reading and writing more historical romances set later in the Victorian era. Here's my review.

It Had to Be a Duke by Vivienne Lorret (releases November 28th)

Adorable, hysterical, full review coming in a couple months, but here are my reactions.

What Was Meant To Be by Heather Guerre

Small-town romance done right. This one really hit on an emotional level; Rain has been under her father's thumb her entire adult life and was never given the resources and support she needed as someone with autism. As a result, she finds herself coerced into marry Wes, a guy in rural Wisconsin she's never met, so Wes can get the property he needs for his resort (basically a dowry :/). What follows is heartbreaking and uplifting at once: Rain begins to exercise her independence and she and Wes slowly come around to an tentative understanding. This is a book where fucking leads to feelings and there are some great sex scenes in this one. Rain is the dominant one in their sexual relationship, and Wes is 100% here for it... a Good Boy, if you will. It's a soft domme vibe but effective and very natural in my opinion, and I would love to read more of this dynamic in romance novels.

Knockout by Sarah MacLean

I knocked this one out in a day (here are my final thoughts). Plotwise my favorite in the Hell's Belles series (a series of mysterious targeted explosions? come on), and the romance between Imogen and Tommy was a perfectly done Grumpy/Sunshine. Also, if you weren't imagining Detective Inspector William 'The Duke' Wellington while reading Tommy Peck, you were reading it wrong.

Rules of Engagement by Christina Dodd

If there's one thing Christina Dodd excels at, it's writing a bitchy hero in that early 2000s kind of way. Kerrich has a little St. Vincent in him; his biggest issue (apart from his trauma from accidentally mooning the King of England after he fell off a trellis because he saw a girl naked) is that alllll his servants find him so hot they can't help but proposition him, so he decides to find the ugliest governess, procure a child, and become "respectable" thanks to a blackmail threat. Also, he does unironically wear a monocle and I'm here for it. Pamela is the kind of pragmatic heroine I love: she's willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done, but when push comes to shove, she feels very little shame in seeking pleasure.

The Prize by Julie Garwood

If you find yourself missing the Lillian-Westcliff dynamic but perhaps want to see it play out in a medieval setting, then this is your book! Royce is a hypercompetent Norman lord, and Nicholaa (yes there's an extra 'a' there) is, as the blurb perfectly puts it, a "resourceful, rebellious and utterly naive" Saxon lady. In the grand theme of Westcliff, there was definitely some conversation about how it was "unlike" Royce to do some not-entirely-consensual stuff during the deflowering scene, to which I say no, it really was... in character. Man was on the brink.

But if that's your jam, then you'll probably enjoy this one.

Redhawk Reunion series by Robin Covington

I found a new favorite Harlequin Desire series this month! The Redhawk Reunion series is about three siblings of Native American descent who were removed from their parents' home by CPS without cause and separated (I strongly urge everyone to look into Indian Adoption Project, the Indian Child Welfare Act, and Haaland v. Brackeen to learn more because it used to be upsettingly common due to government policy). Adam, the hero of the first book, hires PI Tess to find his long-lost siblings and they fall into a FWB situation with a side of secret REVENGE. The second book involves Adam's sister Sarina, who accidentally marries his business partner Justin in Vegas, and they too end up in a FWB situation except, well, as a married (for convenience) couple. As far as Harlequin Desires go, both are top-notch and deliver exactly what you want from this imprint.

Also, I believe the next book is supposed to be about Adam and Sarina's brother Roan and the President of the United States' daughter, whose portrait he's supposed to be painting and I'm VERY excited for that.

I love this building on Wylie Street next to the BeltLine in Reynoldstown. Look at the beautiful brick details on the facade. It dates to 1906.

I'm told that this building is currently a popular recording studio. Gnarls Barkley and Belle & Sebastian have recorded here.

History: In 1866, Madison and Sarah Reynolds (both formerly enslaved) moved from Covington, Georgia to settle between Atlanta and Decatur. Their son Isaiah Pearson Reynolds, who was born in Covington in 1862, graduated from Clark University in 1881. He became a major player in Reynoldstown's early development. The community was said to be named in honor of the Reynolds family.

In 1906, I.P. Reynolds became the first Black person to build a two story brick building in the community, and from this location he operated an all-purpose store. The building was known as the I.P. Reynolds Building. (Source: Reynoldstown 2000 master plan)

Donald Trump’s idea of being patriotic is not about supporting the United States. It’s about supporting those who help him. That’s why Trump has long praised and defended the Jan 6 terrorists who were helping him attempt to remain in power despite losing the 2020 election. Now Trump is taking this support to a new level by welcoming to his exclusive country club in New Jersey an awards show called the “J6 Awards Gala” created to honor those who attacked the Capitol—including those who brutally beat police officers. This is akin to Osama Bin Laden holding an awards event four years after 9/11 to honor those who waged that terrorist attack. And it’s just as vile and anti-American.

The website for this Sept. 5 event--organized by the Stand in the Gap Foundation--boasts that Trump has been invited to speak—although reports are he’s not expected to attend. But the event website notes other visible Trump allies will be speaking including Rudy Guiliani and former advisor Peter Navarro—who was released in July from prison after serving three months for refusing to comply with the House Jan 6 committee’s investigation. It's no surprise that this event is being held at one of Trump’s marquee properties given his track record. The GOP’s 2024 presidential nominee has hailed the attackers as  “patriots” and vowed to pardon those convicted of crimes— including those “who assaulted officers.” And last year—to little media attention--he spoke at a fundraiser at this very Trump golf course in support of the Jan 6 insurrectionists. Trump has even  kicked off campaign rallies with an announcer asking the crowd to “please rise for the horribly and unfairly treated January 6 hostages” followed by a recording of the national anthem performed by people incarcerated in connection with the attack. Indeed, it’s these Jan 6 prisoners who sang that song--which Trump lent his voice to--who will be honored at the upcoming event at Trump’s golf course.

[...] In addition, the organizer of this J6 awards ceremony is Sarah McAbee, the wife of Ronald Colton McAbee, a former sheriff’s deputy who was sentenced to nearly six years in prison for assaulting police officers on Jan. 6. As DOJ detailed, McAbee despicably held down another police officer who had been “knocked to the ground, kicked, and stripped of his baton by other rioters” enabling the crowd to viciously beat him. As a result, “the officer sustained physical injuries, including a head laceration, concussion, elbow injury, bruising, and bodily abrasions.” These are just some of the Jan 6 attackers expected to be honored at Trump National Golf Club  in New Jersey. Interestingly, the country club’s website explains that for large events like weddings or galas, organizers need to contact the club management to utilize a “membership sponsored program.”  Did Trump sponsor this event? Did he waive this requirement? It’s unclear but one thing is certain: Trump has not denounced the event, called for it be canceled or demanded his photo be removed for the website promoting the “J6 Awards Gala.” At this point, even if Trump were pressured and ultimately denounced the J6 awards gala, it would ring hollow given his record of praising and defending the attackers.  These are Trump’s people and Jan 6 was his attack. As the House Jan 6 committee’s final report summed up well, “the central cause of January 6th was one man, former President Donald Trump, whom many others followed,” adding, “None of the events of January 6th would have happened without him.”  

At the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, NJ, Donald Trump is set to welcome the domestic terrorist-honoring J6 Awards Gala on September 5th.

Trump himself is invited to speak but currently isn’t confirmed; however, Peter Navarro, Bo Loudon, Colby Covington, and Rudy Giuliani are just a few of the confirmed speakers.

I love the beautiful brickwork on this historic building on Wylie Street next to the BeltLine, in Reynoldstown.

In recent years, it has been the home of a recording studio. Gnarls Barkley and Belle & Sebastian have recorded here.

It has a wonderful history too:

In 1906, I.P. Reynolds, the son of former slaves, built this building and operated an all-purpose store in it.

In 1866, ex-slaves Madison and Sarah Reynolds moved from Covington, Georgia to settle between Atlanta and Decatur. Their son Isaiah Pearson Reynolds, who was born in Covington in 1862, graduated from Clark University in 1881. He became a major player in Reynoldstown's early development.

The community was said to be named in honor of the Reynolds family. In 1906, I.P. Reynolds became the first black person to build a two story brick building in the community, and from this location he operated an all-purpose store.

Cincinnati Gasped At The Idea Of ‘Trial Marriages,’ But Practiced Them Anyway

Judge Stanley Struble was fed up. As he looked over his docket in 1929, the judge grew suspicious that the Hamilton County Courts were being forced into abetting the immoral practice known as the “trial marriage.” It was increasingly common, Struble noticed, for Ohio teenagers to elope to Northern Kentucky, where marriage laws were much looser, and then, when the match proved unsatisfactory, to ask Ohio courts to annul the union on the basis of their immaturity. Judge Struble told the Cincinnati Post [30 November 1929]:

“These marriages seem to be becoming a habit among youthful couples, and clerks who issue licenses in such cases seem to be interested only in obtaining the fees, the same as would appear the case of those who perform these marriage ceremonies.”

Judge Struble held two annulment appeals aside until further investigation revealed the motivation behind those cases. The couples placed under the microscope were Leola Stouder McCloskey, who testified that she was only 16 when she married 19-year-old William McCloskey in Covington in 1926 and Elizabeth Bruenen Edwards, married at age 16 to Robert Edwards in Newport, also in 1926. In neither case did any testimony reveal why each couple had waited three years before seeking annulment.

Judge Struble was reacting to a controversial topic that had stirred debate in Cincinnati since at least 1906 – the idea that temporary marriages, giving couples a no-fault option to leave the marriage after a brief trial period, were the solution to the social problems of divorce. The idea was most popularly promoted by pioneering anthropologist Elsie Clews Parsons in her 1906 book, “The Family.” Almost from the day it was published, Doctor Parsons’ book was widely (if surreptitiously) read and just as widely condemned. The Post [23 November 1906] was editorially outraged, claiming that it was already too easy to terminate a marriage:

“The reform is needed in the other direction. We need to get rid of the feeling that marriage is a mere experiment.”

In condemning the concept of trial marriage, The Post had lots of company. Doctor Sarah Siewers, one of Cincinnati’s foremost suffragists, told the Post [20 November 1906]:

“Abominable! Who ever heard of a woman making such a fool of herself? Why, the plan Mrs. Parsons proposes means the end of society and the home and a reversal to the dark ages. The whole thing is disgusting to me. The only solution to the divorce problem is for men to behave themselves better and for women to insist on being treated as equals, not as inferiors or slaves.”

Mrs. Jessie Oliphant, described as a “Norwood club woman,” declined to comment:

“It is a very serious problem that Mrs. Parsons has started out to solve. The subject is very distasteful to me and I would rather not discuss it.”

Judge John A Caldwell was four-square against the idea:

“Trial marriage could be no marriage at all, and would ultimately destroy the marriage relation altogether. Such a system would destroy the home, the greatest of all our institutions, and would illegitimatize thousands of children”

The more opinions the Post published in opposition to trial marriage, the more letters it received in support of the concept. Furniture dealer Maurice C. Williams wrote [26 November 1906]:

“The views of Mrs. Parsons, as expressed in the book, ‘The Family,’ are as the faint rays of a dawning day which become gradually more resplendent until the shimmering light gives way to the sun in all its glory, casting its benignant influence over all. So it will be with man. The ideas advanced are along the lines of altruism.”

In the same issue, cabinet maker Fred Walthard (Yes, most of the supporters of trial marriage were men.) wrote:

“The majority of marriage ceremonies still take place in churches or similar places, where a priest is the ‘matador.’ But you don’t find one couple out of a thousand that are advanced enough to seek the judgement of a reliable physician concerning their match. I am afraid the divorce problem will never be solved so long as law and religion have everything to say about marriage and science nothing.”

An unnamed judge of the Hamilton County courts dabbled in statistics and informed the Cincinnati Post [28 October 1909] that all marriages were trial marriages anyway, and that he had the data to prove it. Looking over his cases for the past month, the judge found 140 divorce suits. Of these, 107 requests for divorce were filed by couples married less than 10 years:

“’Proving,’ said a Judge of the Hamilton-co. courts, ‘that marriage is naturally a 10-year-trial proposition. The figures indicate to me that couples who manage to live together for 10 years will in most cases stay married the rest of their lives, and the couples unsuited for each other usually find it out before 10 years are over.”

The anonymous judge scoffed at the idea of a trial marriage, since his experience showed that all marriages had a natural trial period built in. A closer look at his numbers revealed that 73 divorces – more than half of the month’s total – involved marriages that had not yet marked a five-year anniversary.

Spotting a saucy topic, the entertainment industry jumped on the trial marriage bandwagon. Cincinnati audiences enjoyed a play and a couple of silent films based on the trial marriage concept.

As late as the rock ‘n’ roll era, the Post’s medical advice columnist, Dr. George W. Crane, warned young women to avoid over-sexed men who proposed this immoral arrangement [16 September 1958]:

“Trial marriage usually is suggested by a person who may feel sexual infatuation but no true love. And there is a whale of a difference! Trial marriage definitely does NOT benefit the girl. She makes the sacrifices and is likely to be left pregnant and unable to earn a living for herself.”

Her father was not present in her life growing up, which sometimes made her questions why he couldn't bring himself to be in her life. Despite that, she had a happy childhood, with a modest and loving upbringing. She had a huge family in Covington, and knew almost everyone around town. 

In high school, she really came out of her shell. Her kind and jovial nature not only made here likable, but popular. Harlow's athleticism led her to try out for the cheerleading squad in 10th grade. She made the team, becoming one of the star cheerleaders. Harlow brought infectious energy and enthusiasm to the squad, t. She balanced her cheering commitments with challenging courses, earning excellent grades. 

Life would have been perfect, until tragedy struck when she was 15. Her mother was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of leukemia. After a brave battle, Sarah passed away just before Harlow's 16th birthday. Losing her mother at such a young age was heartbreaking for the teen. Her mother's death forced her to grow up quickly, though it didn't dim her kindness. She moved in with her aunt and uncle nearby (who she always saw as her second set of parents) and finished high school living with them. 

After high school, Harlow set her sights on higher education at the prestigious Savannah College of Art and Design. The creative vibes at SCAD gave Harlow a place to express her grief through art. She put her amazing talents to work and graduated with top honors, earning a BFA in Painting. However, while she was job searching, she felt as if something was missing. 

It was her childhood friend Amy who first introduced Harlow to the wonders of baking. One particularly difficult week—after Harlow failed to land a job, again—Amy invited her over. There, she suggested they bake since Amy found baking relaxing. As they baked, she felt a familiar sense of comfort and creativity stir within her. Amy called her a natural and persuaded her to take baking seriously. With no job prospects in sight, Harlow signed up for a prestigious pastry program soon after. She immersed herself in mastering the techniques of breadmaking and decorating elaborate pastries.

After honing her skills, she took the courageous step of opening her own bakery at 27 years old—using the inheritance her mom left her to help finance the new business. She named it Bread & Butter. Harlow poured her heart and soul into creating a welcoming community space that shared her love of baking through high-quality breads and pastries. Owning her business was fulfilling but demanding work. At the very beginning, Harlow routinely worked 15 hour days. Her perseverance paid off as Bread & Butter gained a loyal following for its exceptional baked goods. 

A few years after starting her business, romance came knocking. He was charming and driven, and they formed an instant connection. After 1 year of dating, he proposed, and although she knew she wasn't ready—she accepted and they began planning their wedding. However, as the big day grew closer, she realized deep down that she couldn't go through with the wedding. She was glad to have followed her instincts because not too long after that; she found out he had gotten another woman pregnant. This experience left Harlow guarded when it came to romance. She has remained single in the years since, focusing her energy instead on the bakery, her friends and family.

Hey mamas...

Posting anonymously because I still feel strange about this. Maybe I'm being paranoid.

My DS (8) was really obsessed with this YouTuber for a period of time this summer/fall. Obviously I always tried to redirect him toward educational content but sometimes as mamas we have to pick our battles. Anyway, it was more than just a typical level of being a fan. Him and his friend, we'll call her Mary (7), they would have play dates and ALL they would do was watch iPad. And they would get this really strange hypnotized look in their eyes, and it was honestly a little freaky how much they insisted on getting to watch this guy.

Something happened recently that destroyed my iPad (I can't get into it, that's a whole other story) and it hasn't been a problem since then. DS and Mary haven't asked since, and I haven't replaced the iPad. But it's still freaking me out.

He's called Sprog Monster. As far as I'm aware, it seems to be your typical Kids YouTube fare— slime tutorials, toy unboxing, stuff like that. I haven't actually watched it myself because I'm worried I might get hypnotized too if I do. Does anyone know what this is? Anyone watch it yourself? TIA.

Emily Covington Following. I'm having the same issue. DD (7) won't stop asking about Sprog Monster. I suspect she might be sneaking out of her room after bedtime to get to the iPad and watch him when I'm not looking.

Michaela Witherspoon I've watched Sprog Monster before. My DS (5) is obsessed. I've only watched it once and I don't feel like I've been sucked in/hypnotized but I swear like 30 minutes did go by without me even noticing.

You're right, it is pretty typical kids youtube fare. But there's something kind of off about it. Can't put my finger on it. I feel like he might be a Magick or something. Idk. I'm scared.
